As part of the wild art scene in New York in the early 1980s, George Condo was close to painters such as Basquiat and Keith Haring and worked at Warhol’s Factory applying diamond dust to silkscreen. At the same time, he found his way to his own artistic expression, which he describes as “artificial realism”. Condo mixes input from art history’s masters – such as Manet and Picasso – with elements of American Pop Art. He distorts and renews this material so that it stands out and becomes his own. The exhibition The Way I Think is showing at Louisiana until 4 February 2018.

The year is 1897. Some of the Swedes seeking happiness in America have arrived in a small industrial town where the poor Swedes are a perfect fit for a dirty and often flooded ravine in the middle of the city. The performance of Swede Hollow is based on Ola Larsmo’s acclaimed book from 2016 with the same name. It shows how most of the Swedes seeking happiness in the New World did not end up in the countryside but stayed in the big cities where they toiled in factories.

I
n southwest Norway, beside the famous fjords is Stavanger, Norway’s third largest urban area and the Nordic region’s biggest growing city since the 1970s.Why? Norwegian oil. It was in the nearby North Sea, where the Norwegians found oil in 1969. Since then, the city has continually expanded and is today Europe’s premier oil and energy city, and the largest company in the Nordic region – Statoil, has its head office here. The expansion has also brought a wide range of restaurants and museums. Stavanger became the European Capital of Culture in 2008, and today boasts over twenty museums, including the Norwegian Oil Museum and the Stavanger Museum of Art, along with a wide range of galleries, theatres and cultural centres around the city. Stavanger also has some of Europe’s best-preserved wooden buildings with 170 white wooden houses in its old quarter. This makes the city much more reminiscent of a small town. 03.17 BEST WAY 21

...a complete eldorado for those who enjoy hiking and life outdoors
Despite such cultural and gastronomic riches, it is probably the surrounding unspoilt nature that attracts most tourists to the area around Stavanger and Ryfylke, a complete eldorado for those who enjoy hiking and life outdoors. The jewel in the crown is the world famous cliff Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), which lies just about an hour outside the city. The cliff looms 600 metres above the Lyse Fjord and has often been described as one of the world’s most stunning views. There is plenty more in the area such as the Flørlitrappene, which is the world’s longest wooden staircase with its 4,444 steps, which is just one of many hiking experiences to be enjoyed around the 40-kilometre-long Lyse fjord. Other popular hikes are the Kjerag and Kjeragbolten, which, thanks to its drop down to Lyse fjord, have also become popular for climbing and abseiling. Adrenaline junkies can try canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, zip-lining, abseiling, paragliding or rafting, to name a few. If you prefer a more sedate time but still want to enjoy the beautiful nature then hopping on one of the many boat trips that go on the fjords is highly recommended. You will find everything from traditional fishing and sightseeing tours to adventure sailing and gourmet cruises. Stavanger offers activities for everyone whether you are an adventurer or just a nature lover.

Digitalisation: a crucial and necessary change From his 21st floor office in Kuala Lumpur, Jonas Hammarberg sees the world changing. We called him to talk about how digitalisation will affect us all. Text: David Lindman
24 BEST WAY 03.17
Digitalisation
O
ne thing is certain: digitalisation already affects us and it will continue to affect us in the coming few years. Jonas Hammarberg says that we are at the heart of one of the many crucial steps of evolution. When people read about digitalisation at school in a thousand or ten thousand years time, it will appear as a piece of history that lifted humanity. But when it’s in progress it will be dramatic and hit society down at the individual level. To put it bluntly: People and businesses risk becoming unusable when the map as we known it is redrawn. Jonas Hammarberg is one of the Sweden’s most engaged lecturers in digital leadership. He is, along with Arash Gilan, author of the book Get digital or die trying. And he is an appropriate expert if you want to argue about what digitalisation means to you and me.
In which phase are we in now? “I would say that 2016 was the year of waking up. Previously, there was a general debate about what digitalisation means, with globalisation and all that. Now most people have formed an idea of what it means to them in their everyday lives. Those that woke up are now active in the planning phase and now digitalisation is happening.” The title of your and Arash Gilan’s book is dramatic. It claims that those failing to transform to the digital world will die. Where do you start? “By creating a vision. Where are we in 2022? All we know about the future is that we do not know anything about it, just that it will go faster than we ever thought. We need to answer a number of questions. Digitalisation is about internal and external processes, about new business models and about a new or upgraded culture in the business. What do customers want from us?What customers will we have in five years time? Where do our revenue sources come from? How should we work to make things happen? What partners do
we need to add to our eco system? In what way do we need to deliver digitally within the organisation, in our customer relationship and our interaction? This requires digital leadership. And this is more than just normal development? “Yes, because we are facing a crucial change. If you say that the sources of income in the future will come from the same source as it has always done, in most cases, you are wrong. All existing sources are facing competition. Everything that can be done cheaper and easier, will be. If the price of a product is zero, how do you generate income? No one figured how Google would make money when they started, but today, we understand how they do it.” “There is no facit. All companies in all industries need to tackle the issue from their own standpoint. The energy industry is working against climateneutral results. How do energy companies make money when people produce their electricity themselves? This is already happening. In new residential areas, we see completely 03.17 BEST WAY 25
Digitalisation new ecosystems where a household’s energy surplus goes to the neighbour. “The car industry will not sell cars in the same way as before. What do hairdressers do when someone finally comes up with a business model where it’s free to cut hair and where revenue is generated from something else, other products or services? Hairdressers have a unique opportunity with the time they have with their customer. How do they capitalise on that time, if the actual cutting doesn’t cost anything?” If business is affected, then isn’t society in general also affected? “Absolutely. Many jobs will disappear over the next 20 years. We will have a surplus of people who had normal jobs such as factory workers and truck drivers. High education is becoming increasingly important and today we have a deficit in algorithm people. This is a big question for society.” “Many companies will suffer. The economy is put to the test as investment pressure increases. It costs to invest in digital capacity and digital leadership, but it is necessary. At the same time, many will experience pressure from elsewhere as well, as competition, price squeezing and new business models cause a loss of revenue. These are tough factors, but those who don’t invest will be making a big mistake.” “Everyone needs to get on track and those out of the loop will need to be taken care of. There will be increased stress both on the inside and outside of digitalisation.” It sounds almost like domesday? “Not really, as in the future we will look at this as evolution. The world will be better, but when the transformation is in progress, it will be tough.
I grew up in a community where everything was around us and we were close to our local markets. Is this something we can return to as a side effect of digitalisation? “Well, that’s an interesting perspective. In the next 5-10 years, permanent jobs will decrease. We will become more individual, selling our services in clusters and networks. Jobs have become more complex and people look for simplicity, which is one of the reasons for this happening. We are now used to the need for feedback and confirmation, which is easier to get if you work more directly with your own customer. Never before has the involvement in large workplaces been so low, even though we are better off than ever. It is a complex issue, but we find that we are experiencing new needs created by our private lives,
which we are not getting at work. I think we will see more dedicated people who work for themselves, but in new eco systems, where you work together for a higher purpose or goal - such as sustainability for society, business and people. “Even small movements need to tackle digitalisation, build networks with the same interest, find the right e-commerce solution and adapt to customers' changing patterns and needs. And above all learn from each other along the way.”
Jonas Hammarberg is one of Sweden’s most engaged lecturers in digital leadership. As a certified coach, he works with a combination of traditional organisational development and digital tools, with people’s inner motivation and commitment in focus.

Back in training this autumn
Summer and the holiday season is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of work. Though combining rest with exercise isn’t that straightforward as many relax far more than they intended and so getting back on the treadmill gets even tougher. Get help from colleagues
Set up long term goals
When you are back at work enlist a colleague and decide on some kind of activity every day. It could be a powerwalk for lunch, touching your toes ten times each hour or doing press ups whilst waiting for the coffee machine to finish.
Have something to look forward to with your workouts and something to fight for. For example, sign up for a marathon or maybe a shorter race, or have a deadline to achieve a certain weight or size with your body. Any form of training goal increases motivation no end.
Photo: ©Pixabay
A training session affects four areas: fitness, stamina, muscle strength and agility. Fitness is affected most and quickest. Even after just a few weeks’ rest, your condition levels drop by up to 15 percent. This can be seen clearly when running or cycling uphill. The way back to the gym or exercise trail can therefore feel long after those hours in the hammock and that extra glass of rosé wine. But it’s possible to get back to full fitness even if your body is tired after several weeks of inactivity. Here are a few great tips that can be helpful when you want to get started with training again after vacation.
Photo: ©Pixabay
Make a decision and stick to it
Do you feel bored and uninspired by doing the same exercise as you did before? Test a new group training session or schedule to kick start your training. If your gym card has expired, it’s a great opportunity to try a new gym if you need new inspiration. A new training outfit and new equipment can also make it feel fun to train again and increase motivation.
Get outdoors! Be sure to be outdoors as much as you can during the last weeks of summer. Daylight regulates the level of hormone melatonin which in turn regulates our sleep. Soak up the sunlight and enjoy nature at the same time by doing powerwalks, running or cycling. Photo: ©Pixabay
Determine in advance that you will start exercising and review your diet immediately after your holiday. See it as a contract you establish with yourself. Put entries in your calendar when you shall train and what you shall achieve. Then it is easier to fulfill and harder to ignore.
Try something new
Use the journey to work A good way to get training as a natural part of everyday life is to use the journey to and from work. Cycle to work a couple of times a week or get off the bus a few stops earlier and take a walk. Make your journey both longer and more exciting with a detour and search out new routes to work.

ike most young boys, Christian von Koenigsegg liked to play with toy cars, though he studied
them more thoroughly than most. “I also remember watching the movie Flåklypa Grand Prix, which gave me a lot of ideas,” says Christian. The result is that one of the world’s fastest sports cars is now being built in Ängelholm in Southern Sweden.

Koenigsegg
A young boy's dream comes true Text: Ian Maasing
I shall create my own super sports car! “During my teens I read a lot of motor magazines and became fascinated by the shape and technology of cars which led me to think about making my own, preferably a sports car. In 1994, at the age of 22, I had decided to build a sports car. I started on a small scale in a construction office in Stockholm. Together with a friend, who is a designer, we began to look for a stylish and functional shape for the car”, says Christian.
“I remember how we were browsing through hundreds of car magazines for inspiration. Even then, I had an idea that the vehicle should be a mid-engined sports car and the focus was on getting a suitable construction based on this. “One and a half years later, we had developed the first sketches of a sustainable concept. The following year we were able to show a small scale model. Based on this model, we then worked on sustainable design solutions. So far, I had invested my own money in the company, but as the business grew, I had to look for partners who could help finance and
drive the project further. We were also in need of larger premises.
The first prototype “In 1996 we were able to move to new premises in Olofström in the Blekinge region. The search for money had yielded results. Nutek helped with a loan, so that we could build and showcase the first executable prototype of the Koenigsegg supercar. It was powered by a V8 engine from Audi. But soon after, Audi pulled out. They had their own plans for a sports car, so they would no longer deliver the engine so we had to look for another engine supplier”, continues Christian.

Koenigsegg “Through new contacts in the motor industry, we got in touch with the Italian engine manufacturer Motori Moderni, who had developed a 3.5-litre, 12-cylinder boxer engine together with Subaru. The engine gave approximately 580 hp at 9000 rpm and was to be used for Subarus’s planned entry in to Formula 1. This never materialised so we thought, why not use the engine in our supercar. The engine was modified, amongst other things its cylinder volume increased to 3.8 litres, and was mounted in our second prototype car. During the test, however, it was found that a racing engine did not really fit in a supercar so the search for a suitable engine continued”, Christian reveals. “We were given the chance to try a special built-in compressor-powered V8 engine originating from Ford's racing department, and now it felt like we were on the right track. Development work moved on quickly and in 1997 we were able to showcase the first Koenigsegg CC in conjunction with the Cannes Film Festival on the French Riviera.
“We grew out of the premises in Olofström, and moved to a larger space in Margretetorp in northwestern Skåne. Now it was time for us to develop sustainable design solutions for a series-produced car. I contacted various specialists who could serve as subcontractors for special parts. In March 2000, we announced our first series car, a Koenigsegg CC8S. It had a V8 engine trimmed with a 650 hp compressor at 7500 rpm. “The first delivery to the customer was in 2002. During production the next year we unfortunately had a fire though luckily we managed to pull out some cars which were near completion. “Around that time we were offered premises in one of the hangars on the abandoned F10 airfield in Ängelholm, where we now have our base. “I have always been responsive and tried to find the best possible technical solutions together with my employees.” Further development led to the Koenigsegg CCR, which was released in 2004 and broke the speed record on the Italian circuit at Nardo on 28 February 2005. At 387.866 km / h, Koenigsegg CCR became the fastest of all production cars.

Tailor made? If you are thinking about spending more than 20 million SEK on a Koenigsegg Regera, then you certainly do not want to see the exact same car on the neighbour’s drive! Koenigsegg’s personal customisation department can manufacture carbonfiber-reinforced car panels so that the car is tailored to your needs and is therefore unique.
Koenigsegg Automotive AB The company has developed over the years and has become something of a dream factory. With the increase in sales the Ă„ngelholm plant has become twice as big and now has two production lines that make it possible to manufacture two different cars simultaneously. There is also a factory in Spain that manufactures components in carbon fiber reinforced plastic which are used in their own vehicles and also sold to other car manufacturers. The company continues to grow with the workforce now numbering 140 employees and they are looking to employ a further 40.
34 BEST WAY 03.17
Koenigsegg CCR (Competition Coupe Racing), was developed into CCX, which was presented in 2006. The X in the model designation is the Roman numeral for ten, to celebrate ten years since the first supercar from Koenigsegg. “In January 2008 we had delivered 50 cars, of which six were to Swedish customers. A person ordering today can wait upto a year to get his car, which will be handmade with all the specifications requested regarding colour, interior and technical details such as ceramic brakes. There are 14 dealerships around the world.”
Agera – the next model The new Agera was launched during the STCC (Swedish Touring Car Championship) in Gothenburg in summer 2010 with a helicopter carrying the car landing during the competition. The lightweight car, contains an in-house developed twinturbocharged V8 engine which produces 940 hp together with a seven-speed dual-type automatic gearbox. In September 2012, ten years after the first customer delivery of a supercar from Koenigsegg, production started on the Hundra (one hundred). A right-handed Koenigsegg Agera S with the name Hundra. The car was finished for the International Motor show in Geneva in 2013 and was then delivered to an expectant car collector.
One: 1 - the first megacar In 2014, Koenigsegg celebrated its 20th anniversary as the only Swedish super sports car manufacturer, with the unveiling of the Koenigsegg One:1 – to date its strongest, fastest and most expensive car.
The name One:1 comes from the power (1360 PS) to weight (1360 kg) ratio giving the car 1 bhp per 1 kg weight. The 1341 bhp power output is the equivalent of one megawatt, which Koenigsegg claims makes the One:1 the ‘world's first megacar’. The car is one of the world’s only sports cars ready to handle 0-400 km/h in about 20 seconds. The ceramic brakes then help to stop the car from 400-0 km/h in about 10 seconds. The six cars that were manufactured sold quickly. The enthusiastic customers were not so price sensitive anymore, but accepted a price tag of about 20 million SEK.
The ultimate super sports car During the development of One:1, work was also started on an even more advanced supercar - the Regera. Koenigsegg states that the Regera will be the most powerful and fastest accelerating production car ever. It has
a turbocharged V8 engine of 1,100 hp and three electric motors with a total of 670 hp, which together yield a maximum power of 1,500 hp and a torque of more than 2,000 rpm. A total of 80 Regera are to be produced in the custom-made production facilities at the old airfield in Ängelholm and the first two customerordered cars were shown at Geneva this year. The location is perfect for Koenigsegg’s customers as they can arrive by private jet or helicopter directly to the door of the factory to check how manufacturing is going. So what does Christian von Koenigsegg’s own private supercar look like? The car he dreamed of building 16 years ago? Could it be a CC8S, a CCR, a CCX, a CCXR, Agera or a Regera? Actually, no, his car is a Tesla model S – A futuristic electric car!

Sure Hotel Best Western continues to expand in Scandinavia and adds two new brands to its hotel collection this autumn.
Best Western Hotels and Resorts launches two new brands Earlier this year Best Western acquired Sweden Hotels and is now taking another major step in strengthening its position in Scandinavia. They will do this by launching two new brands in October entitled Sure Hotel by Best Western and Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western. Standards and prices will vary between the different hotels, but they will, like Sweden Hotels, be in the middle class segment, a class that is growing more and more within Best Western. “Our ambition is to continue to develop Best Western with high quality hotels in strategically important destinations, and Sure Hotel gives us more hotels in the mid-range segment. This allows us to grow in line with Best Western’s ethos - personal and privately owned hotels offering something more than the standard hotel experience,” says Johan Kukacka, CEO of Best Western Hotels & Resorts in Scandinavia. The new brands were launched at the end of 2016 on the US market with a very positive reception, and now the brands are being introduced in Scandinavia. The first hotels to feature are Hotel Esplanade in Stockholm,

The Sure Hotel brands, like the other Best Western brands, will also be distributed on Best Western platforms and included in the chain’s loyalty program, Best Western Rewards. This allows guests to receive points that can be used at any of the hotels around the world that are included in the Best Western family. For the hotels themselves this means that they receive support in distribution, sales, marketing and purchasing from Best Western’s network, as well as being part of the Nores purchasing organisation.
Frimurarhotellet in Kalmar is one of the first hotels in the Sure Hotel Collection.
“Our goal is to become Scandinavia's leading mid-price hotel brand by offering a new category of personal and privately owned hotels, with the benefits of a great chain behind them,” concludes Johan.
