Classic Bellini opera Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake

The priestess Norma’s dilemma is relevant to us all: what is most important in a chaotic time of nationalism and religious strife? Duty or passion; ourselves, or those we love? Norma is the first dramatic production of a Bellini opera in Gothenburg since the 1800s. Norma is played by deeper-voiced soprano Katarina Karnéus. Premiere at Göteborgsoperan 2 December. Photo: Mats Bäcker

It was a stroke of genius when, in the late 1800s, someone thought of letting female ballet dancers use their long limbs and flexible curves to bring to life the

swans of Swan Lake. The ballet is now more than 100 years old, but it will never go out of fashion. The young Prince Siegfried falls in love with the loveliest, white swan

princess, Odette, but he allows himself to be led astray by her black counterpart, Odile. Plays from February June at Det Kongelige Teater in Copenhagen.

Premiere for The Wasp Hanna and Cathrine (Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes and Ine Marie Wilmann) haven’t met since school. Their lives have taken very different paths – Cathrine lives a hand to mouth existence while Heather has a high-flying career, husband and a beautiful home. Then Hanna presents Cathrine with a bag containing a significant amount of cash and an unexpected proposition. Playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm had great success with The Wasp in London during 2015. Playing Oslo Nye Centralteatret until 22 December.

Travel trends this winter

We travel like never before. Prior to this winter, bookings have risen by about 15 percent from already record high levels when compared to last year, according to Ticket, the travel agency. And in winter, of course, the sun and warmth is most attractive. But if you would rather go skiing then we recommend Sälen, one of Sweden’s most popular ski destinations.

14 BEST WAY 04.17

“Gran Canaria is the most popular winter destination year after year, says Katarina Daniels, PR & Communication manager at Ticket. “The relatively short flight time combined with pretty much guaranteed sun during the winter months as well as a wide range of good accommodation options make this a regular favourite. Even the other Canary Islands, such as Tenerife and Fuerteventura, will attract many Swedes this winter. Another favourite is Thailand, which is still strong among the competition for winter trips despite the longer journey time. Many stay for

a few days in the capital Bangkok, before visiting some of the many island alternatives. But direct flights to Phuket and Krabi are becoming increasingly popular as well, and overall, more and more travellers are choosing Thailand as a winter destination. There are a few alternative destinations that are growing in popularity this year, among them Cape Verde and Vietnam. Cape Verde, has a similar journey time to the Canary Islands and receives a whole 350 days of sunshine each year. Vietnam is starting to become a serious alternative to Thailand, with the pick being the island paradise of Phu Quoc.

Another growing trend are cruises and combination holidays. From Europe Cruises leave often from Barcelona and Venice, and Caribbean cruises have Miami as a starting point. Here you can combine both a cruise with a city break and beach holiday and Miami/Florida is a fantastic alternative. “As far as cruises are concerned, travellers have become more and heterogeneous; it is not just the older generation that chooses to go on a cruise, and as cruise companies are investing more and more in their ships, it creates a greater demand.” “Even round trips in Florida, where you combine the city pulse and beach life with other experiences such as trips to the Everglades and Key West, have become very popular,” says Katarina.

“These are trends that look like continuing through 2018, when we also expect weekend and short trips to increase even more.”

Another trend on the up is the weekend or city break. “During the autumn these type of breaks have increased by 35 per cent”, explains Katarina. “Swedes generally want to get away for several shorter breaks during the year rather than the one big summer holiday. This is also apparent with the increased popularity of European city breaks, which are perfect for those who just want to get away for a couple of days”, continues Katarina.

Sälen Close to the border of Norway, Sälen is one of Sweden’s most popular ski resorts and guests stayed a total of five million nights there last year. In the middle of this ski paradise is the Best Western Stöten Ski Hotel and Best Way got some tips for the coming season. Photo: Magnus Dovallius

Stöten

For the coming winter season over 35 million swedish kronor has been invested in a new snowmaking system which will guarantee more snow on each run and will allow several slopes to open earlier in the season. The new system halves the time to lay the snow, and all slopes included in the system can be opened even if there is no snow at all. Other improvements for this season include new runs on several slopes, and several have also been widened including the childrens favourite, Räven, the World Cup slope and the Self-timer course. Skidtorget has also been enlarged making it easier for skiers to ski all the way in to the new Älvan restuarant and Café. The building which was Älvans former premises has been converted to a warm cabin, where skiers can take a break and even bring in their own food like the warm cabin on Stötentorget.

04.17 BEST WAY 17

Travel

Stöten also offers plenty of crosscountry skiing. There are seven different tracks between three and 15 kilometres with a total of 45 kilometres to experience both for those that like to ski classic or skating. Stöten has two cross-country trails up in the tundra with fantastic views over the swedish and norwegian alpine landscape.

New to cross country skiing? A few tips... > Rent free-running skis (that do not need waxing) if you just want to try it out. The ski always grips, even if it glides a little less. > Choose a soft ski that is more forgiving. The exact length of the ski is less important. More expensive skis are easier and smoother than cheap options, the same applies to poles. > Regardless of your ambition level, it is worth spending money on a quality pair of boots with a good binding system. > Do not overdo it. If you are a beginner, your first trip should not exceed ten kilometres.

18 BEST WAY 04.17

Photo: Magnus Dovallius

Even Soltorget, host to the children’s area has had a facelift for the new season. As well as all the prepared slopes Sälen also has Stöten Adventure, a popular concept with seven different zones offering competitive challenges for the whole family. Zones include a speed course, side by side slalom, skicross with jumps, an adventure course and the Fun Park – perfect for the more adventurous skier. Stöten has plenty of off-piste skiing possibilities for both families and daredevil skiers.

Charlotte Kalla, a previously unknown name for most, had the chance to win the whole event - but the distance to the leader, Finland’s Virpi Kuitunen continued to increase over the course of the race. Then suddenly something happened. Kalla started pulling back second after second and the 19-year-old Swede made her move on the final hill. As she climbed up, she flew past the Finn, who in comparison appeared to be almost at a standstill. Moments later a deliriously happy Charlotte Kalla could lift her arms to the sky in victory. This is a feeling she has experienced many times since. That race became her international breakthrough and the kick-start to a very successful ski career - which is far from over.

It was ten years previously in the small town of Tärendö in Tornedalen, Northern Sweden that her career began its journey. A seven year old Charlotte Kalla began spending every

Tuesday and Thursday night with her grandfather. She stood ready with skis and poles, waiting for him to judge which wax to use to suit the current conditions. “The wonderful scent of paraffin wax brings back memories of being in my grandfather’s garage when I first started,” says Charlotte Kalla today. Her interest in skiing remained and grew stronger. She still remembers how, at one point, at the age of nine, she considered skipping training. At that time, it was still interesting to follow scheduled TV programmes and just that evening there was a documentary on the Spice Girls, her absolute favourite group. The idea of prioritising television in front of training was quickly dismissed and Charlotte was out on the ski tracks as usual. However it turned out that her parents had the foresight to record the show on VHS so that she could watch it afterwards.

So when did she decide to become a skier? Perhaps already in fourth grade, she guesses when she thinks back. “The sport takes a lot of your time when you live in Tornedalen, there wasn’t a lot else to do. In addition to skiing, I played a lot of basketball during school time though it was never my favourite sport. I liked playing basketball in order to hang out with my friends. The next step was joining the skiing academy in Gällivare, and suddenly the intensity increased to between eight and ten workouts a week, something that suited Charlotte very well. When in third grade at high school she got a place on the junior national team and a chance to compete at the Junior World Championships in Kranj, Slovenia. She left Kranj with three medals, one of each denomination. The following year, in March 2007, it was

time for another Junior World Championships in Italy, and this time she took home four medals; two gold and two silver. Between these two championships she had actually made her debut in the senior event in Sapporo - even though she was still a junior. Another year later, and she started to be taken seriously by the seniors after that dramatic final dual with Virpi Kuitunen when winning the Tour de Ski. During the seasons that have elapsed since then, she has actually won 17 medals from major championships (Olympics/World Championships), which equals the Swedish record - only the great Gunde Svan is on a par. Though Charlotte Kalla is still very active and is aiming to win more medals at next year’s Olympics in

Pyeongchang, South Korea. The question is: How long will she continue to compete at this level? “At least until the World Championships in 2019, then we'll see. Though I find it very hard to imagine it will end after that.” She doesn’t see all the training in order to hunt podium places as something of a sacrifice. “To train twice a day is something I appreciate and yearn for, all year round. I have had this lust to train since childhood. One of the best parts of this profession is to be out on the ski tracks and ... to just enjoy!

The sport takes a lot of your time when you live in Tornedalen, there wasn’t a lot else to do.

How to be a better skier Charlotte Kalla’s tips: – Be sure to include technique training in every session. – Ensure that you have sufficient tension in your midriff to withstand the weight and power of your upper body when you push off with the poles. – Try skiing without poles to help your weight balance. – Vary your stride length and frequency with each terrain. – Lift your gaze 5-10 metres in front of you for a good body posture. – Ask someone to film you so you can see your technical strengths and weaknesses. – Follow technically skilled skiers and mimic their technique. Find the best way to copy their speed and try to ‘borrow’ their frequency and tempo changes.

Ahead of Vasaloppet (or any other long race): “Your race will be so much more enjoyable if you have trained properly for the challenge. If you are prepared, your senses will be more aware and you can take in more impressions along the course - the smell of the bonfire where the spectators heat their frozen fingers, how the minus temperatures taste in your mouth, the squeaking of the poles as you push yourself forwards, the long trail of skiers both in front of and behind you.”

Setting goals: “Ask yourself why are you skiing and what goals you have. It is important that you take the time to reflect on what your driving forces are because it is in response to this question where the important energy is. If you act and prioritise after what you have decided, you will soon notice how little negotiating you need to do with yourself!”

Equipment: “Make sure that skis, poles and other equipment are customized to suit yourself. Do not take over someone else’s equipment.” "Don’t have much time? Use freerunning skis (no wax needed) so you avoid focusing on the skis and instead focus on your condition training. " “During the off season, I train on roller skis almost daily. If you do not have access to snow, roller skiing is a great way to train as you use the same muscle groups as when you’re on the snow.” Taken from Charlotte Kallas new book.

being a-ha

The story of a-ha began in 1982, but it was three years later with the release of the world-wide hit song ‘Take on Me’ that the band’s career took off. The song was launched with a very innovative music video for its time that was half animated and it went on to have a big impact throughout the world. They would spend the next decade releasing hit records and albums and touring the globe. But the many journeys and the demand to constantly deliver new material began to take it’s toll on the band and the relationship between it’s members changed. “I think it was probably me who felt the need for a new start. I had begun to become more interested in the art world and felt that I wanted to get out my creativity without having to feel any demands on the result, or that I had to make a career of it,” says Magne Furuholmen, keyboard player and songwriter in the band.

In recent years, Magne has opened his own art gallery in Oslo, has been given an honorary doctorate at Agder University, has been appointed chairman of the Bergen International Festival and is today regarded as one of Norway’s most well-known and diverse artists. He has also created film music, worked with talent development, recorded a couple of solo albums with help from members of Travis and Coldplay, and has started up the artist group Apparatjik.

by the acoustic album ‘MTV Unplugged - Summer Solstice’, consisting mostly of scaled-down versions of the group’s most popular songs. The album also features guest appearances from Ian McCulloch (Echo & the Bunnymen) and Alison Moyet. “It was an interesting process to scale down the songs to their origins and place them in a more timeless soundtrack. Suddenly, you realize that there is a melancholy behind the sometimes cheerful 80’s production. In addition, it meant that we had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the studio together and in a sense, we feel as if we finally understand each other better than we ever did. It's been a bit like the 80’s when we basically lived in the studio and were always looking for a nice sound and the perfect refrain. I have experienced a team feeling and a creative exchange within the band that I haven’t known for several years. One of our strengths has also been that we are three very different personalities and that everyone has contributed to the songwriting process.

I have experienced a team feeling and a creative exchange within the band that I haven’t known for several years.

“Today, I would say that I'm 70% visual artist and the rest of my time is spent on my other projects, of which a-ha is one. Previously, you recorded an album, then went out on tour to promote it, before going back in the studio to record the next album etc. Nowadays, we have the privilege of choosing ourselves what we want to do and when it will happen. We work on a more project style basis where we focus hard on the band for a year and then each of us goes back to their different projects and careers again. In this way, one looks forward to creating music and touring,”continues Magne. After a pause of several years, the band, which also include Morten Harket (singer) and Pål Waaktar-Savoy (guitar), made a big comeback around the turn of the millennium and suddenly their music, often regarded as lightweight pop, received much more recognition. Even artists such as Coldplay, Keane, Travis, U2, Stone Roses and Pet Shop Boys now mention a-ha as a source of inspiration. After a number of successful albums and tours, it was time for another break in 2010. After a few goodbye concerts the band members returned to their respective solo projects once again. Five years later, however, they made a new unexpected comeback with the studio album ‘Cast in steel’, followed earlier this year

In the spring, a-ha will conduct the final gigs on their MTV Unplugged Tour, before embarking on the new ‘Electric world’ tour in the summer which will take the band to Dalhalla in Sweden and several places around Norway. “It’s incredibly fun to get out and meet our audience again and realize how lucky we are, after 35 years we still have the opportunity to stand on stage in front of thousands of fans singing in our songs. There is no longer any prestige in living up to any rock star ideals, the focus is on having fun and delivering a good concert to the audience,” concludes Magne.

Spik Studios Best Western will welcome two new exciting hotels to the chain in Sweden this coming spring. The Best Western Plus Hus 57 in Ängelholm, and The Box Hotel in Linköping. We meet Gothenberg based Spik Studios; the company behind the interior design of both hotels. Text: Thomas Madsen

Spik Studios Both hotels are described as lifestyle hotels and are a part of Best Western’s new strategy to promote itself as ‘Hotels for Locals’, meaning that the new hotel projects will give them both a role in local business and a place in locals’ hearts. It was good opportunity to go a little further than usual with regard to the design. “The reason we took on the two Best Western projects was that we thought it was a great challenge to work with a chain that may sometimes be perceived to be a bit boring and to make it a little more fun,” says Daniel Berg Stocks, CEO and Project Manager at Spik Studios, and continues: “We are a bit different in our industry, with a mix of traditional and non-traditional resources in our team.

We do not intend to become a big agency but we like to work in a way that is personal, flexible and professional. Spik Studios has a team of eight people who solve everything. Faster, easier, and more fun, which ultimately means we are cheaper for the customer. We also make sure that we keep everything together, from concept and idea, to furnishing, purchasing and staging. This gives the customer the advantage of only having one contact throughout the whole process,” he says. “In addition, we focus heavily on the experience, and we are adept at creating cosy, warm environments where we add a final layer of props, greenery, graphics and art. Much of this was what appealed to the operators of both The Box Hotel and Hus 57.

...we worked on a concept that would remind people of big cities with a bit of nerve, like Berlin and Amsterdam. A youthful design without it being childish. “We came into contact with Spik Studios through a recommendation from Niklas Möller, CEO of the Harrys pub chain in Gothenburg,” says Bengt Pettersson, owner of The Box Hotel.   “When we looked at the five proposals which we received, we thought that Spik Studios had the coolest and most innovative ideas in terms of design. They also came with the name suggestions,” Bengt continues. The procedure was pretty much the same with regard to Hus 57 in Ängelholm. “We had followed a lot of the work Daniel and his colleagues had done on other projects and were very impressed, says Pia Hansson and Mattias Frisk, who will run Hus 57.

One of the conference facilities at Best Western Plus Hus 57

36 BEST WAY 04.17

“After having travelled around looking at other hotels, we found out what we wanted so we started looking for someone who could realise our ideas. Finally, we had four different options, although some of the agencies felt far too big, so we asked Spik Studios if they wanted to work with us and became euphorically happy when they said yes, says Pia and Mattias. “It felt right from the first meeting with Pia and Mattias,” says Daniel, and it has been fun to follow the work all the way. Of course, this also applied to The Box Hotel, and in both cases it has been a matter of close co-operation with the operators. We have always developed ideas and designs that we tested with them, and it must feel 100 percent right if it is to be perceived as genuine and personal by the guests,” he continues. “In the case of The Box Hotel, it is not the middle of town, unlike Hus 57. Therefore we wanted to create a clear and attractive concept so that guests wouldn't mind doing a little detour, and

just like in Ängelholm, we want the hotel to be a destination in itself,” explains Daniel. “In fact, in the case of Hus 57, we started out with various stories from Pia and Mattias life and worked from there. These stories inspired us in terms of colours, material choices, details and so on. We wanted it to feel like coming to Pia and Mattias’ home, and together we wanted to create an Ängelholmers’ living room in a personal neighbourhood hotel. “As regards The Box Hotel, we worked on a concept that would remind people of big cities with a bit of nerve, like Berlin and Amsterdam. A youthful design without it being childish. We would like a wide range of guests to enjoy the hotel whilst challenging their imagination,” says Daniel, who explains that the name came from the feeling that the building was like a big black box and we realised that it was fun to build on that concept. “Both hotels also agree that the local people are important and that they hope the public areas of the hotel will attract the city’s inhabitants and be a natural

meeting place. The bar, restaurant and the overall setting shall be one of the best in town.” Best Western Plus Hus 57 will contain 112 rooms, two of which are suites on the top floor, a restaurant, bar and spa area with gym in the basement. In addition, there will be a total of seven different meeting/event rooms with a total of 700m2, with the largest room on the ground floor being 300m2 and will be able to hold different kinds of functions such as trade fairs, product launches, cultural events, banquets, weddings and parties. The plan is to open in March 2018. The Box Hotel will contain 176 rooms and suites. Of course, there is also a restaurant, bar, gym and a spa area with jacuzzi and outdoor pool, as well as conference facilities for up to 150 people. The hotel is scheduled to open in April 2018.

The high ceiling and the rather vertical sections provide an airy interior and the good ground clearance means the undercarriage doesn’t get stuck with the first small snowfall or when offroad, regardless of whether the car is a two or four-wheel drive. Sales increase every year and even more so now, when one car manufacturer after another launches SUVs at reasonable prices. Here's a selection of the new models.

Motor Alfa Romeo's first SUV, Stelvio, has a practical height so that you can get in and out of the car without acrobatic exercises and sit comfortably in the reasonably high seats both front and back. The ground clearance is good so no getting stuck on speedhumps or snow. Available as a rear-wheel drive and as a four-wheel drive. The BMW X2 shares much of it’s technology with the BMW X1and has a more coupé-shaped design and dynamic features, looking like a sporty crossover. Models include petrol and diesel engines, front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, manual or automatic gearbox. They will be launched at the beginning of next year. Citroën C3 Crossair is a cross between a SUV and a hatchback. It has a chunky lower body cladding over the wheelhouses, as well as stylish 17inch adjustable wheels. Seat Arona is a compact crossover, based on the Volkswagen Group’s new modular platform, MQB A0. The rugged, slightly angular body is only 414 cm long, but high enough to get comfortably in and out of the car. The 95 hp, three-cylinder motor which drives the front wheels via a five-speed manual box, only releases 112 g of carbon dioxide per kilometre. A truly eco-friendly value for a crossover. With a field clearance of 19 centimetres, it should not have any difficulty driving through a decimetre of snow.

The new Volvo XC40 is the third SUV from Gothenburg and comes with plenty of room for passengers to easily climb in and out through the high doorways. The entry model is a frontwheel drive model, with a 156 hp petrol engine and manual transmission starting at around 30,000 euros.

Hyundai Kona is a compact crossover where the designers have masked the practical shape with stylish lines. With the option of two different petrol engines, the smaller with front-wheel drive and manual transmission and the larger with four-wheel drive and automatic. Launches at the beginning of next year.

The Opel Grandland X, closely related to the Peugeot 3008, is a versatile crossover. You do not have to bend backwards to get in or out of the spacious, chic interior. It comes with a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol option or a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel option to begin with.

The popular Tiguan has got a little sister, the compact Volkswagen T-Roc crossover and is based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf. It will be launched at the beginning of next year and the simplest version, with front-wheel drive, will cost from around 22,000 euros. Furthermore, there are versions with permanent four-wheel drive and automatic gearbox. Engines to choose from include petrol engines of 115, 150 and 190 hp and diesels of 150 and 190 hp.

Ford completes its range of crossovers with the compact and technologyupdated EcoSport, now manufactured in Europe. The car is based on the Ford Fiesta which ensures a comfortable and safe car.

Jaguar E-Pace is the second SUV from Jaguar with a nice calm design. Compared to its big-brother the F-Pace, it is 33 cm shorter and measures 440 cm in length. The driving force comes from fourcylinder petrol and diesel engines and is powered by a six-speed manual transmission or a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Best Western’s new website

– now even easier to find what you are looking for! Have you visited the Best Western website recently? If so, you’ve probably noticed the new design and functionality - or you've just had the pleasure of an even smoother search and booking experience. During the autumn, the new versions of Best Western’s Scandinavian websites became fully operational and opened for visitors. One thing you will notice is that you will recognise where you are regardless of which country’s landing page you come to, whether in Scandinavia or anywhere else in the world. “We wanted to link the customer experience, partly between the different country versions, but also by giving the visitor a better experience on each individual website,” says Per Telander, Web Strategy Manager at Best Western. The first thing each visitor encounters is an improved search feature, at the top of the page. “It has been important for us to make the search ‘smarter’, among other things by not being limited to searching by country or city. If you are interested in living near an airport or a specific address, then you can start with that - or if, for example, you are a traveller interested in art and are looking for accommodation near the city's art museum, then you can enter that as a search query.” Per Telander has been Scandinavian project manager for the development of the new digital platform and has noticed that it is becoming increasingly important for the traveller to know what others travellers think of a certain hotel or destination before making their final choice. “Therefore, we have highlighted TripAdvisor’s ratings so that you can answer the question ‘What do other travellers say?’ by checking reviews and scores on, for example, location and cleanliness.

He also hopes that the visitor will notice how much easier it is now to see what options are available and to quickly find the one that suits best. Clarity is something that has been important in the development work, he says. “It is also evident in the new design, with large images that are easier to absorb than a lot of text.” From the landing page you can easily click on the part that focuses on different destinations, such as New York, Paris, London or some Scandinavian cities. Here you can get useful information about the different destinations and practical tips for a visit. “Another new feature is that we have started to put up our packages so that they become searchable and bookable directly from the web. I know that many will appreciate it, because it is very popular way to travel,” says Per. Best Western will also add a function for those who want to make group or event bookings. “Everyone who is a member of Best Western Rewards has also received noticeable improvements through the new website. For example, it is easy to find prior bookings or to check how many points you have amassed.” Naturally Best Western’s website works equally smoothly whether you visit it via computer, mobile or tablet - the responsive design means all the graphics and functions automatically adapt to the device you are using. “For example, if you are on a business trip, you can quickly use your mobile phone to find the nearest hotels. We also have our own app in english which is very handy and it's easy to save the mobile page as a favorite on your mobile if you want to see it in your own language.” In the future, Per Telander looks forward to being able to offering customers much more choice of hotels in Scandinavia: “After purchasing another hotel chain earlier in 2017, we are now working on adding them to our system which will mean significantly more destinations to choose from shortly,” he says.

Stop dirt at the entrance... Kåbe Scraper Grids Pressed steel or rubber nonslip strips

The scraper grid is normally placed outside the entrance door. Where possible, over a deeper recess where the dirt can collect over a long time without any need to lift the grid for cleaning. Scraper grids are available in several different designs.

Kåbe Kombi

Perfect, where it is not possible to prevent the passage of heavy trolleys! Kåbe Kombi is the high-heels-friendly, hardwearing rollable entrance mat that is a good alternative to the Kåbe Original Mat. Kåbe Kombi is fitted with strips of brush, textile or rubber. These can also be combined with each other on the same mat.

...we have the answers! Kåbe Original Colour Available in red and grey! Kåbe-Mattan AB • Sågverksvägen 10A • SE-716 93 Fjugesta, Sweden Tel. +46 (0) 585-255 50 • Fax. +46 (0) 585-255 59 e-mail@kabe-mattan.se • www.kabe-mattan.se
