The Fog Horn Newsletter of the 1st Maidenhead Sea Scout Group Hello! The weather is finally on the turn - that means the sections are able to get outside more – not that it really stops them in the winter months! We have had a busy last few months – one of the reasons why the newsletter hasn’t been written since Feb. I hope to see you all at our Summer Fair & AGM on the 22nd June at the Scout Hut, and maybe even at Family Camp in September! Wayne - GSL *The Fire Circle has now been redone after the floods - bigger and better than the last one!
**Help Required** Longridge Tent Hire – July 16th & 18th 6.30pm Can YOU help?! Group Quiz We held another successful Quiz Night in March, with the winners of the last two beaten by a team of Sea Cubs parents! As normal the questions were suitable for most abilities and the practical rounds gave an extra edge to the competition.
We enjoyed the food, from Fry Days and drink from the Rebellion Brewery – who also gave us a couple of raffle prizes. Feedback has confirmed the event does what it should, and there is also interest for some other suggested evenings – watch this space!
Subs Congratulations to the Scout section who are again the best this term at the collection Subs! No reward this time as the other sections owe too much – PLEASE can I ask that you all keep up to date with the payment of Subs. Please remember that they need to be paid within the first couple of weeks in the term – we cannot plan ahead if we do not know how much we have to spend, please help us give the best programme we can by paying on time. Subs for Beavers are currently £36 and for all other sections are £48. Please send via bank transfer or set up a standing order in order (attached) to cut down on admin – Barclays Bank, 20-78-58, 30298875. Please put your child’s name and section as a reference.

Fundraising We have had a bumper couple of months getting money in: Last month we won the top prize in the Waitrose Community Matters £500 – a HUGE THANK YOU to all those who popped the Green Tokens in our box and asked friends/family to do the same! Councillor Adam Smith’s Participatory Fund for the year, which is £750, has been awarded to us this year – this will go towards our boat fund, together with the £2000 we received from the Berkshire Foundation – this one needs to be spent by October, so a lot more to raise if we want to keep it! On Easter Monday we were fortunate enough to be able to Bag Pack at Homebase and managed to raise around £346 – another great effort from the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers – and parents! We have our annual Longridge Tent Hire on July 16th and 18th for Burnham Grammar – we need help putting up and taking down these – an email will come out asking for help, please try and pop along. Caroline (Mang) is researching and applying for grants, if you see any advertised please let her know.
Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers We still have a few more weeks left collecting the vouchers for the group – so if you can send them in with your child we can add them to the collection and hopefully gain enough to order equipment for all sections to use. The collection box is in the main entrance – or hand them to a leader if not meeting at the hut.
Group T-shirt’s As the warmer / dryer weather approaches don’t forget to purchase a Group T-shirt for your child. Beaver & Cub sizes are £7 and Scouts/Explorer/Adult ones are £8.
Sea Beavers At the end of March, the Beavers held their ‘Penny Fair’ to raise money for Baby Matters Kenya. It was a great success and raised £106 which enabled them to pay the postage on the items they collected to send to the charity in Kenya!

Sea Beavers (Cont.) They have also been learning about their bikes, different ways of communicating and been to Ockwells Park for some outside activities – all in aid of various badges. Some of the games/stalls they had at the Penny Fair will be on offer at our Summer Fair & AGM on the 22nd June – try your luck again!
Don’t forget our Summer Fair & AGM – 22nd June 12 – 3pm Sea Cubs Recently the Sea Cubs have been to Bisham Woods, tackled some global issues in a Recycle evening, enjoyed a Town Faith Quiz and some also had the chance to go to Halfords to complete extra work towards the Cyclist Badge. The whole pack then had an evening at Dorney Rowing Lake where they invested our 6 new members – not everyone can say they were invested at an Olympic Venue!
Sea Scouts
Sea Scouts The Scouts managed to take part in the 3 Towers Hike gaining a Silver Award for the older team and a Bronze for the younger team – great work guys! They have also enjoyed yet another Rockley Sailing Weekend in Dorset – thanks to David Howell and Kevin for organising, the weather was perfect and the sea great also for learning the ‘ropes’.
Thanks to Sarah Davies for the photos of Rockley – more on the Facebook page. They are now at Taplow for the rest of the term and so far taken part in Paddle Boarding and Kayaking.

Explorers News from the Explorers states that the Flash Boats float! That is great news as they have been working on them for a few months and it could have all been for nothing…Poor James had the job of being in them when they went in the water – all to confirm any leaks!
Family Camp It’s back bigger and better than last time…! Dates are September 19th to 21st and we are heading back to Ferny Croft, New Forest.
