PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 18 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of studentathletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. During the 2014-15 academic year, 110 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all President Douglas G. Lee 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of student-athletes at Waynesburg. Also this year, the Yellow jacket men were awarded the PAC All-Sports Trophy for the first time in University history. PAC All-Sports Trophies are awarded annually to the schools that perform the best across the board in league competition. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport. On behalf of Waynesburg University students, faculty and staff, I would like to thank you for your interest in our athletic programs. I hope that you enjoy another great year of athletic competition at Waynesburg University!

2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW With the graduation of three starters who have put together a combined 11 seasons as a starter, the Waynesburg University wrestling team will have a new, younger look to it for the 2015-16 campaign. Eighth-year head coach Ron Headlee and his staff will look to rebuild his lineup in an effort to regain the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) title. Waynesburg was picked to finish third in the annual preseason PAC poll after finishing third at last year’s conference championships.
Freshman Matt Claxton is also in the 141-pound depth chart after qualifying for the Maryland State Wrestling Championships three times.
125 Pounds Three-year starter Gordan Bieber returns to lead off the Jacket lineup. He has compiled a 56-62 overall record as a Yellow Jacket, won an individual title at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational and been featured in the D3wrestle.com national rankings.
149 Pounds The departure of Luke Lohr from this spot in the lineup leaves a huge hole for the Yellow Jackets. Lohr is the all-time winningest wrestler in program history, a four-time PAC champion, a three-time national qualifier and a two-time All-American.
Sophomore Tristan Buxton is another strong candidate for the position after posting a 13-9 overall record during his freshman campaign. He opened a few eyes during the recent Orange/Black Wrestle-offs by winning a thrilling 4-3 decision against Bieber.
Grindle looks to be the early candidate for the starting job, but Waynesburg hopes to add to the weight’s depth at the semester break.
133 Pounds With two-year starter Filippo Crivelli moving up to 141 pounds this winter, sophomore Zach Swarrow is expected to be the leader for this starting job. Swarrow transferred to Waynesburg prior to last season from Division II national powerhouse Pitt Johnstown and went 13-11 overall, including a 2-0 mark in dual competition. Nine of those wins came with bonus points. If Bieber does not say at 125, he could also make a run at the 133 spot.
www.waynesburgsports.com
141 Pounds As previously mentioned, Crivelli, who won a PAC title as a freshman and has compiled a 54-33 overall record over his first two seasons with the team, has bumped up a weight class and expected to be the man to beat at 141 pounds. The Clinton, Pennsylvania, native has been featured in the D3wrestle.com rankings and has also been recognized for his work in the classroom as an NWCA Scholar All-American. 6
Crivelli will have competition for the job, however, as sophomore DJ Grindle is back with the team after spending parts of the 2014-15 campaign as the man at 141 pounds. Grindle went 12-21 overall and 7-12 in dual matches. He racked up eight wins with bonus points.
157 Pounds The Yellow Jackets utilized several wrestlers at this weight class last year, including sophomore Landon Lohr, Luke Lohr’s younger brother, and sophomore Derek Hull. Both returners could be in the mix for the job this year, along with freshman Nick Kusich. The younger Lohr posted a 14-13 overall record, which included his first collegiate dual victory and eight wins with bonus points. Hull, who also spent a portion of the year as Waynesburg’s starting 165-pounder, went 16-18 overall with a 6-19 dual mark. Kusich hails from Avella, Pennsylvania, where he wrestled for Avella High School. He was a four-year letter-winner and a PIAA Southwest Region qualifier for the Eagles. 165 Pounds Like 149 pounds, Waynesburg loses an accomplished grappler at this weight. Sam Guidi won the 2015 PAC title at 165 pounds and made his second trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships. He ended his collegiate career by placing fourth at the event.
2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW started at the weight last year, but was a three-year starter at 197 prior to dropping a class. 197 Pounds This weight class could feature multiple starters, especially throughout the fall semester. Wrestlers at 174 and 184 will be called upon to handle the job, but Waynesburg is hoping to add a strong starting candidate or two later in the year. 285 Pounds Senior Greg Kumer has not only started the last two seasons, but is the two-time defending PAC champion at heavyweight. He nearly became a national qualifier as a junior, but dropped a heart-breaking overtime decision in the third-place match at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships. Three-year starter Gordan Bieber is back for his senior season. He is expected to be in the loop at either 125 or 133 pounds.
After spending time as Waynesburg’s 165-pound starter while Guidi competed at 174, Hull looks to be the everyday starter here. Lohr could also spend time at this weight. 174 Pounds The 174-pound weight class is all about freshmen this season.
Kumer has compiled a 66-37 overall record and been featured in the D3wrestle.com national rankings. While he is the prohibitive favorite to man the job, freshman Jake Evans threw his hat in the ring by edging Kumber 3-2 at wrestle-offs. The Jackets face their first live competition of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 4, when they host Division II Shippensburg. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
www.waynesburgsports.com
Mike Millero, Tristan Nicholson and Joshua Sneeringer are all first-year grapplers looking to win the job. Millero made the biggest splash at the recent wrestle-offs by earning a 16-0 technical fall in 1:33 over Nicholson at the event. Nicholson also notched a bonus point win this past Saturday by pinning Sneeringer in the third period of their match. 184 Pounds Junior Ryan Shank made a good first impression on the Jackets after transferring to campus prior to last season. He went 12-7 overall, won the Waynesburg Invitational and was featured in the D3wrestle.com national rankings. Shank is bumping up to 184 pounds this year and replaces Patrick Jennings, who not only

WAYNESBURG WRESTLING ROOM
Prior to the start of the 2011-12 season, the Waynesburg University wrestling team moved into a new wrestling room. The facility is located in the renovated Captain Robert C. Wiley Armory, which used to house the local Army National Guard unit before it was moved to a newer building at 500 EverGreene Drive in Waynesburg. The new home of the Jacket Mat Men features two full-size wrestling mats, five-foot high wall mats, cardio equipment and areas dedicated to stretch band and kettle bell workouts. Head coach Ron Headlee is obviously excited about the future site of his team’s practices and workouts. “We will be able to have our whole team wrestling in the live competition,” Headlee said. “In the old room we had to split into two groups because of space.” The Jacket wrestling team used to hold practices in a much smaller facility in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Obviously, Headlee believes that an up-to-date practice facility will aid in his already fruitful recruiting efforts.
www.waynesburgsports.com
“Showing our room to new recruits is exciting because I believe we will have one of the nicest rooms in Division III,” Headlee said. “The University has really helped us by giving us this facility to better accommodate the numbers we now have.”

HEAD COACH RON HEADLEE
Record at Waynesburg: 79-45-1 Career Record: 79-45-1 4-time PAC Coach of the Year Since coming to Waynesburg before the 2008-09 season, Ron Headlee has guided the Yellow Jacket wrestling program through one the most amazing turnarounds in school athletic history. Last year’s record-setting 17-7 overall record is part of a 79-45-1 overall mark posted by Headlee. He has also led the Jackets to the best Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) dual record (12-2) over that same stretch of any conference program. During his first seven years with the squad, he guided the Jackets to their first four PAC team titles in program history and has helped develop six All-Americans, including 2014 graduate Anthony Bonaventura, who placed second at 174 pounds, and 2015 graduate Luke Lohr, who became a two-time All-American after accomplishing the feat in 2013 and 2015. Lohr was also a three-time national qualifier and a four-time PAC champion. For his efforts, Headlee has been named PAC Coach of the Year on four separate occasions. This past winter, Lohr was joined by senior teammate Sam Guidi at the NCAA Division III National Championships. The duo made program history by coming the first set of teammates to earn D III All-American status at the same tournament. After taking over a team that went 0-11 in dual matches during the 2007-08 season, Headlee, along with primary assistant John Yates, rebuilt the team from the ground up and that year’s Yellow Jackets to a 10-4 season. Included in those 10 dual wins were victories over PAC rivals Thiel and Washington & Jefferson. It was the first time in recorded conference history that the Jackets had completed the sweep as they went a perfect 7-0 against Division III opponents. The Jackets also upset Shippensburg, which was ranked 19th in the country at Division II.

By the time the regular season ended, the Jackets were ranked 28th in the D-III rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). However, the Jackets’ accomplishments weren’t limited to just those of a team variety.

At the annual PAC Championships, then-freshman Alex Evanoff and then-first-year grappler Corbin Semple won conference titles at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively. Semple then joined then-sophomore Nick Garber in winning individual titles at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships. The pair then went on to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Both grapplers earned an upset win over a fifth-ranked opponent, while posting identical 1-2 records at the event. For his efforts, Headlee was nominated for rookie head coach of the year at the Division III National Championships and was also inducted into the Washington/Greene Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
In all, Headlee’s wrestlers have earned eight NCAA Division III Midwest individual titles, won 30 PAC Wrestler of the Week Awards, 19 PAC individual titles and taken home two PAC Outstanding Wrestler awards (Jared Roberts in 2011 and Anthony Bonaventura in 2013). Among those honorees is Garber, who was a threetime Midwest Regional champion and three-time national qualifier. Before turning the Jackets around, Headlee spent 13 years as a head and assistant high school coach. Most recently, Headlee was an assistant varsity and junior high coach at Waynesburg Central High School, where he worked with Yates, who was the head coach of the Raiders until 2007. Prior to his stint with WCHS, Headlee spent nine successful years as the head coach of the JeffersonMorgan Rockets (1988-1997). While there, Headlee helped guide along a man who many consider the greatest high school wrestler in the state of Pennsylvania, Cary Kolat. Under Headlee’s guidance, Kolat went undefeated all four years that he wore a Rocket singlet. While with the Rockets, Headlee compiled an impressive 111-25-1 record and won five Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) team championships. He also coached a total of 24 WPIAL champions, 15 state place-winners and seven state champions. Prior to his coaching days, Headlee enjoyed tremendous success on the mats as a competitor. After graduating from Waynesburg Central High School in 1978, Headlee moved on to Messiah College, from which he graduated in 1982 with a degree in health and physical education. While wrestling for the Falcons, Headlee produced an impressive record of 101-14-1, a then-record, which ranks him ninth on the school’s current career wins list. He was an NAIA all-American for his first three years at Messiah, and was the school’s first NCAA Division III All-American in 1982 after placing fifth at the national tournament. In 1996, Headlee was inducted into the Messiah Athletics Hall of Fame. Before shining with the Falcons, Headlee was a three-time section champion, a WPIAL runner-up and a PIAA state qualifier for WCHS. Headlee is employed by the Jefferson-Morgan School District as a teacher and resides in Waynesburg with his wife Karen. The couple has two sons, Drew and Ethan. Drew is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he was a four-year letterman on the wrestling team, who went on to find success on the national and international competition levels as a freestyle wrestler. He has since returned to Pitt as an assistant coach. Ethan was a four-year letterman for Pitt and a national qualifier to the NCAA Division I Championships.
ASSISTANT COACHES JEFF HAVELKA
Assistant Coach
A familiar face returned to Ron Headlee’s staff prior to the 2014-15 season as former graduate assistant Jeff Havelka came back to the Yellow Jackets as the team’s assistant coach.
184 pounds in 2010, a four-year letter-winner and a two-time captain. He also excelled in the classroom and was a three-time NCAA Academic AllAmerican.
After spending two years with the team as its GA, Havelka spent one year as the head coach at Chartiers-Houston High School, a traditionally strong program in nearby Washington County. During the 2013-14 season, Havelka led the Buccaneers to the WPIAL team tournament and sent two of his wrestlers all the way to the prestigious PIAA state championships in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Havelka earned his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education in 2010 from the University of Findlay and completed a master’s degree in Special Education from Waynesburg University in 2012.
Before taking his first position with the Yellow Jackets, Havelka was a standout student-athlete at the University of Findlay (Ohio).
Before heading to Findlay, Havelka was a excellent wrestler at Burgettstown High School. During his time with the Blue Devils, he racked up 119 wins and qualified for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) championships.
During his time with the Oilers, he was a two-time NCAA Division II national qualifier, most recently at
GENNARO BONAVENTURA Graduate Assistant
After spending four years with the Waynesburg University wrestling program, Gennaro Bonaventura moves from the mat to the bench as a graduate assistant coach. Ironically, he replaces his twin brother Anthony, who spent one year in the position.
After graduating with his undergraduate degree in Sports Management in 2015, Bonaventura is currently pursuing a Master of Education Degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching.

Gennaro enjoyed his best season on the mat during his senior campaign in 2014-15 going 20-20 overall. He spent the year as the Yellow Jackets’ starting 197-pounder and scored three victories by pin and one win by technical fall. Over his time in orange and black, Bonaventura was a part of three PAC championship teams (2011, 13,14) The native of Commack, New York, was also a fouryear member of the Waynesburg University football team. He was part of the 10-1 2012 PAC Conference championship team and ECAC Southwest Bowl Championship squad.
The former two-sport Jacket athlete is a 2010 graduate of Hauppauge High School, where he wrestled (three-year letter winner) and played football (two-year letter winner), baseball, lacrosse (two-year letter winner) and basketball. Bonaventura also serves as the graduate assistant coach with the Waynesburg University women’s lacrosse team.

ASSISTANT COACHES JOHN YATES
Volunteer Assistant Coach
Before the 2008-09 season, John Yates joined his good friend and long-time coaching counterpart Ron Headlee as an assistant coach on Headlee’s first staff as Waynesburg’s head man. He is back for his eighth year with the program, as a volunteer assistant. He served as Headlee’s primary assistant over the previous six seasons. In 2008, Yates played a major role in the program’s rebirth from years of struggle. He was rewarded for his efforts by being nominated for Assistant Coach of the Year at the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championships. Yates came to Waynesburg after 10 years as the head coach at Waynesburg Central High School. Ironically, during part of his time as the head of the successful WCHS program, Headlee served as one of Yates’ assistant coaches.

While at the helm of the Raiders, Yates produced an impressive overall record of 140-43 and coached 15 WPIAL individual champions, 20 state place-winners and six state champions, including

NCAA Division I champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Coleman Scott, who wrestled at Oklahoma State. Prior to his time as a head coach, Yates spent six seasons as a varsity assistant at WCHS and one year with the junior high program. Yates came to Waynesburg after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989 with a degree in science education. At Pitt, Yates was a four-year letterman on the varsity wrestling team. Prior to joining the Panthers, Yates had a celebrated wrestling career at Seneca Valley High School. With the Raiders, Yates finished as high as third in the WPIAL and sixth in the state. He was also a Greco-Roman state champion and is a member of the Seneca Valley Wrestling Hall of Fame. Yates currently resides in Sycamore, Pennsylvania, with his wife Dawn. The two have a son, Jake, who is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Tiger soccer team.
2014-15 SEASON REVIEW For a second-straight season, the Waynesburg University wrestling team set a program record for most dual record victories in a season. The Yellow Jackets posted a 17-7 overall mark that included wins over six opponents featured in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) national rankings and a 3-0 record against Division II opposition. The Jackets’ success extended to the individual side of things, where several records were broken and plenty of trophies were collected. Two seniors highlghted the year more than any member of the team: Luke Lohr and Sam Guidi. Lohr became the all-time winningest wrestler in program history with a 119-25 overall record. He also won his fourth Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) title, all of which came at 149 pounds and qualified for his third trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Speaking of the biggest tournament of the year, Lohr picked up his second AllAmerican trophy by placing eighth at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
to-back titles at 285 pounds. The Jacket big man went on to narrowly miss out on a trip to the national tournament, when he placed fourth at regionals. As has become the norm under head coach Ron Headlee, Waynesburg was prominently featured in both the National Wrestling Coaches Assocation (NWCA) and/or D3Wrestle.com national rankings. Guidi, Lohr, Kumer, sophomore 133-pounder Filippo Crivelli and sophomore 174-pounder Ryan Shank all received national recognition. Waynesburg also spent the majority of the season featured in the NWCA team rankings. The Jackets’ efforts in the classroom also garnered national applause. Not only was Crivelli listed as a NWCA Scholar All-American, but Waynesburg also made the cut as an NWCA Top-30 Academic Team. The Orange and Black finished in a tie for the 21stbest GPA in Division III at 3.34
Guidi finally earned his first PAC title, and he did it in dominant fashion. The senior standout picked up a pair of pins to take the conference crown. He was the only competitor at the event to score two victories by fall. After crossing that accomplishment off his list, Guidi qualified for his second ticket to nationals by placing third at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships. The 165-pound standout made the most of his trip the national championships by placing fourth in his bracket. Guidi missed out on a trip the national title bout by just one point during a 5-4 setback in the semifinal round.
Along with Guidi and Lohr’s historic postseasons, several other Yellow Jackets gathered up their fair share of accomplishments. Junior heavyweight Greg Kumer became the first PAC wrestler since 2007 to win back-
Senior Luke Lohr ended his collegiate career as one of the greatest competitors in Yellow Jacket history. He was a two-time All-American, a fourtime PAC champion and is the program’s all-time winningest wretler.

These final accomplishments by a pair of program greats also made Yellow Jacket history. Guidi and Lohr’s finishes marked the first time in Waynesburg history that a pair of Jacket wrestlers earned All-American laurels in the same season.

Waynesburg University is a small, private, comprehensive Christian university located in southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), the University inspires students to pursue lives of purpose through faith, learning and serving. Offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs, Waynesburg University designs its curriculum to meet the needs of today’s students. Undergraduates can choose among more than 70 programs of study, including the traditional liberal arts such as English, history, biology, and more, and innovative fields such as athletic training, biblical ministries, computer forensics, criminal justice, forensic science, marine biology, nursing, sports information, sports management, and many others. The University’s Graduate and Professional Studies Program, located at three convenient centers in the immediate Pittsburgh region, offers accelerated, evening programs geared for adult students in the fields of business, nursing, education, and counseling psychology.
A Waynesburg University education not only connects the theoretical and the practical, it also connects the world of ideas with a commitment to serving others. Every student engages in service through personal experiences and specific courses under the guidance of faculty mentors. High school students who are actively involved in community service can qualify for the Bonner Scholars program, which provides scholarship assistance for those who commit to weekly volunteer service. The University’s commitment to service learning and service leadership includes national and international mission and service trips. Participating in these experiences broadens students’ perspectives and education.
