PRESIDENT’S LETTER Whether you’re a parent, an athlete, a member of the media or a spirited spectator, I am pleased to welcome you to our Yellow Jacket community and look forward to cheering on the Jackets with you! As a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), Waynesburg University offers 20 NCAA Division III varsity sports for our hundreds of studentathletes. While the reasons for participation in these sports are many, all of our athletic programs are aimed at helping our student-athletes grow spiritually, intellectually and athletically during their collegiate experience. President Douglas G. Lee

During the 2015-16 academic year, 100 Waynesburg University student-athletes earned recognition on the PAC fall and spring Academic Honor Rolls. That combined total was the highest of all 10 PAC schools, an impressive achievement that illustrates the caliber of studentathletes at Waynesburg. Our goal is to provide our student-athletes with the best possible education and experiences that will prepare them to lead lives of purpose. We actively recruit student-athletes with high academic standards who will pursue excellence in the classroom and community while competing at the highest level in their chosen sport.

Douglas G. Lee President

WAYNESBURG WRESTLING ROOM

Prior to the start of the 2011-12 season, the Waynesburg University wrestling team moved into a new wrestling room. The facility is located in the renovated Captain Robert C. Wiley Armory, which used to house the local Army National Guard unit before it was moved to a newer building at 500 EverGreene Drive in Waynesburg. The home of the Jacket Mat Men features two full-size wrestling mats, five-foot high wall mats, cardio equipment and areas dedicated to stretch band and kettle bell workouts. Head coach Ron Headlee is obviously excited about the future site of his team’s practices and workouts. “We will be able to have our whole team wrestling in the live competition,” Headlee said. “In the old room we had to split into two groups because of space.” The Jacket wrestling team used to hold practices in a much smaller facility in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Obviously, Headlee believes that an up-to-date practice facility will aid in his already fruitful recruiting efforts.

www.waynesburgsports.com

“Showing our room to new recruits is exciting because I believe we will have one of the nicest rooms in Division III,” Headlee said. “The University has really helped us by giving us this facility to better accommodate the numbers we now have.”

HEAD COACH

RON HEADLEE Record at Waynesburg: 85-53-1 Career Record: 85-53-1 4-time PAC Coach of the Year Since coming to Waynesburg before the 2008-09 season, Ron Headlee has guided the Yellow Jacket wrestling program through one the most amazing turnarounds in school athletic history. Last year’s 6-8 overall record is part of a 85-53-1 overall mark posted by Headlee. This past summer, Headlee added to his already impressive resume by being inducted into the Southwestern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame. During his first seven years with the squad, he guided the Jackets to their first four PAC team titles in program history and helped develop six All-Americans, including 2014 graduate Anthony Bonaventura, who placed second at 174 pounds, and 2015 graduate Luke Lohr, who became a two-time All-American after accomplishing the feat in 2013 and 2015. Lohr was also a three-time national qualifier and a four-time PAC champion. For his efforts, Headlee has been named PAC Coach of the Year on four separate occasions. During the winter of 2015, Lohr was joined by senior teammate Sam Guidi at the NCAA Division III National Championships. The duo made program history by coming the first set of teammates to earn D III All-American status at the same tournament. After taking over a team that went 0-11 in dual matches during the 2007-08 season, Headlee, along with primary assistant John Yates, rebuilt the team from the ground up and that year’s Yellow Jackets to a 10-4 season. Included in those 10 dual wins were victories over PAC rivals Thiel and Washington & Jefferson. It was the first time in recorded conference history that the Jackets had completed the sweep as they went a perfect 7-0 against Division III opponents. The Jackets also upset Shippensburg, which was ranked 19th in the country at Division II. By the time the regular season ended, the Jackets were ranked 28th in the D-III rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). However, the Jackets’ accomplishments weren’t limited to just those of a team variety.

Semple then joined then-sophomore Nick Garber in winning individual titles at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships. The pair then went on to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. Both grapplers earned an upset win over a fifth-ranked opponent, while posting identical 1-2 records at the event. For his efforts, Headlee was nominated for rookie head coach of the year at the Division III National Championships and was also inducted into the Washington/ Greene Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Before turning the Jackets around, Headlee spent 13 years as a head and assistant high school coach. Most recently, Headlee was an assistant varsity and junior high coach at Waynesburg Central High School, where he worked with Yates, who was the head coach of the Raiders until 2007. Prior to his stint with WCHS, Headlee spent nine successful years as the head coach of the Jefferson-Morgan Rockets (1988-1997). While there, Headlee helped guide along a man who many consider the greatest high school wrestler in the state of Pennsylvania, Cary Kolat. Under Headlee’s guidance, Kolat went undefeated all four years that he wore a Rocket singlet. While with the Rockets, Headlee compiled an impressive 111-25-1 record and won five Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) team championships. He also coached a total of 24 WPIAL champions, 15 state place-winners and seven state champions. Prior to his coaching days, Headlee enjoyed tremendous success on the mats as a competitor. After graduating from Waynesburg Central High School in 1978, Headlee moved on to Messiah College, from which he graduated in 1982 with a degree in health and physical education. While wrestling for the Falcons, Headlee produced an impressive record of 101-14-1, a then-record, which ranks him ninth on the school’s current career wins list. He was an NAIA all-American for his first three years at Messiah, and was the school’s first NCAA Division III All-American in 1982 after placing fifth at the national tournament. In 1996, Headlee was inducted into the Messiah Athletics Hall of Fame. Before shining with the Falcons, Headlee was a three-time section champion, a WPIAL runner-up and a PIAA state qualifier for WCHS. He is also in his first year as Waynesburg’s head men’s and women’s tennis coach. Headlee is employed by the Jefferson-Morgan School District as a teacher and resides in Waynesburg with his wife Karen. The couple has two sons, Drew and Ethan. Drew is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he was a four-year letterman on the wrestling team, who went on to find success on the national and international competition levels as a freestyle wrestler. He has since returned to Pitt as an assistant coach. Ethan was a four-year letterman for Pitt and a national qualifier to the NCAA Division I Championships.

www.waynesburgsports.com

At the annual PAC Championships, then-freshman Alex Evanoff and then-first-year grappler Corbin Semple won conference titles at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively.

In all, Headlee’s wrestlers have earned eight regional individual titles, won 32 PAC Wrestler of the Week Awards, 22 PAC individual titles and taken home two PAC Outstanding Wrestler awards (Jared Roberts in 2011 and Anthony Bonaventura in 2013). Among those honorees is Garber, who was a three-time Midwest Regional champion and three-time national qualifier.

ASSISTANT COACHES

JEFF HAVELKA Assistant Coach

A familiar face returned to Ron Headlee’s staff prior to the 2014-15 season as former graduate assistant Jeff Havelka came back to the Yellow Jackets as the team’s new assistant coach.

NCAA Division II national qualifier, most recently at 184 pounds in 2010, a four-year letter-winner and a twotime captain. He also excelled in the classroom and was a three-time NCAA Academic All-American.

After spending two years with the team as its GA, Havelka spent one year as the head coach at Chartiers-Houston High School, a traditionally strong program in nearby Washington County. During the 2013-14 season, Havelka led the Buccaneers to the WPIAL team tournament and sent two of his wrestlers all the way to the prestigious PIAA state championships in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Havelka earned his Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education in 2010 from the University of Findlay and completed a master’s degree in Special Education from Waynesburg University in 2012.. He is currently pursuing his Doctorate Degree in Education at Findlay.

Before taking his first position with the Yellow Jackets, Havelka was a standout student-athlete at the University of Findlay (Ohio). During his time with the Oilers, he was a two-time

Before heading to Findlay, Havelka was a excellent wrestler at Burgettstown High School. During his time with the Blue Devils, he racked up 119 wins and qualified for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) championships. He is married to his wife Maggie and the pair resides in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.

GENNARO BONAVENTURA Graduate Assistant

www.waynesburgsports.com

After spending four years with the Waynesburg University wrestling program, Gennaro Bonaventura moved from the mat to the bench as a graduate assistant coach prior to the 2015-16 season. Ironically, he replaced his twin brother Anthony, who spent one year in the position. Gennaro enjoyed his best season on the mat during his senior campaign in 2014-15 going 2020 overall. He spent the year as the Yellow Jackets’ starting 197-pounder and scored three victories by pin and one win by technical fall. Over his time in orange and black, Bonaventura was a part of three PAC championship teams (2011, 13,14) The native of Commack, New York, was also a four-year member of the Waynesburg University football team. He was part of the 10-1 2012 PAC Conference championship team and

ECAC Southwest Bowl Championship squad. The former two-sport Jacket athlete is a 2010 graduate of Hauppauge High School, where he wrestled (three-year letter winner) and played football (two-year letter winner), baseball, lacrosse (two-year letter winner) and basketball. Bonaventura also serves as the graduate assistant coach with the Waynesburg University women’s lacrosse team. After graduating with his undergraduate degree in Sports Management in 2015, Bonaventura is currently pursuing a Master of Education Degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching.

ASSISTANT COACHES

JOHN YATES Volunteer Assistant Coach

Before the 2008-09 season, John Yates joined his good friend and long-time coaching counterpart Ron Headlee as an assistant coach on Headlee’s first staff as Waynesburg’s head man. He is back for his ninth year with the program, his third as a volunteer assistant. He served as Headlee’s primary assistant over his first six seasons. In 2008, Yates played a major role in the program’s rebirth from years of struggle. He was rewarded for his efforts by being nominated for Assistant Coach of the Year at the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championships. Yates came to Waynesburg after 10 years as the head coach at Waynesburg Central High School. Ironically, during part of his time as the head of the successful WCHS program, Headlee served as one of Yates’ assistant coaches. While at the helm of the Raiders, Yates produced an impressive overall record of 140-43 and coached 15 WPIAL individual champions, 20 state place-winners and six state champions, including NCAA Division I champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Coleman Scott, who wrestled at Oklahoma State.

Prior to his time as a head coach, Yates spent six seasons as a varsity assistant at WCHS and one year with the junior high program. Yates came to Waynesburg after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989 with a degree in science education. At Pitt, Yates was a four-year letterman on the varsity wrestling team. Prior to joining the Panthers, Yates had a celebrated wrestling career at Seneca Valley High School. With the Raiders, Yates finished as high as third in the WPIAL and sixth in the state. He was also a Greco-Roman state champion and is a member of the Seneca Valley Wrestling Hall of Fame. Yates currently resides in Sycamore, Pennsylvania, with his wife Dawn. The two have a son, Jake, who is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the Tiger soccer team.

2015-16 SEASON REVIEW The 2015-16 edition of the Waynesburg University wrestling team knew it was in for a few growing pains. Head coach Ron Headlee and his staff had to replace five graduated starters - Luke Lohr, Sam Guidi, Chris Milligan, Patrick Jennings and Gennaro Bonaventura.

Landon Lohr, the younger brother of Luke, earned the starting spot at 165 that was vacated by Sam Guidi, and did a fine job of answering the call. He posted a winning record in his first year as a starter, going 2218 overall with a 6-7 mark in dual competition.

Despite the massive turnover in talent, the Yellow Jackets were still able to go a respectable 6-8 overall in dual matches and finish second at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championsihps. Perhaps more importantly, several newcomers to the team, as well as some returning veterans, flourished in their new roles as team leaders and major point contributors.

Freshman Mike Millero was one of the team’s most hyped newcomers. Waynesburg managed to snag the PIAA AA state qualifier right out of PAC rival Thiel’s backyard at Reynolds High School. While Millero’s 18-21 record was sound, it was his two meetings with one of the conference’s top grapplers that left maybe the biggest impressions. Despite going 0-2 against W&J star Sonnieboy Blanco, who placed fifth in the nation at 174, Millero never backed down from the bigger, stronger, faster competitor, and wrestled him to a pair of decision losses.

Sophomore Tristan Buxton eventually took over the starting 125-pound job from senior Gordan Bieber and posted a 32-14 overall record. However, Bieber still made an impact in his final season on the mats with a 23-9 mark at both 125 and 133 pounds. Buxton went 8-5 in dual competition, while Bieber won all three of his dual bouts. Sophomore Zach Swarrow, who saw plenty of starting time at 133 pounds, went 7-5 in duals as part of a 14-13 season.

One of the few returning starters to the team, junior Filippo Crivelli, bumped up from 133 to 141 pounds and won his second PAC title. He went 31-13 overall and finished second on the squad in dual win (11-3). Crivelli snagged nine wins by pin, two by technical fall and five by major decision.

16

The biggest hole in the Jacket lineup was left by Lohr at 149 pounds. The school’s all-time winningest wrestler was replaced by a combination of freshman Nick Kusich and sophomore D.J. Grindle. Kusich represented the Orange and Black at the PAC Championships. Kusich also spent time at 157 pounds before descending to 149 by the end of the schedule, He was again part of a platoon system, joining sophomore Derek hull at the weight class, as the two took over for Milligan as the starter.

Junior Ryan Shank bounced back from an injury-plagued first year in Waynesburg to win the 184-pound PAC title. Shank pinned his way to the championship as part of a 33-11 season. He ended his year with a 2-2 showing at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships. Perhaps no Waynesburg wrestler showed more heart than freshman Joshua Sneeringer. Waynesburg needed a replacement for Bonaventura at 197 and despite routinely giving up anywhere from 10 to 15 pounds, Sneeringer stepped up to keep the Jackets from forfeiting the weight. When it came to story of the year, freshman heavyweight Jake Evans created more buzz and headlines than arguably anyone on the team. He started his first year with the team by upsetting two-time defending PAC champion Greg Kumer at both the Orange/ Black wrestle-offs and the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. After winning the starting job at 285 pounds, Evans rolled to a team-best 37-9 overall record. He also set squad highs in dual wins (12-1) and pins (13-6). The standout newcomer ended his year with a PAC title and a Waynesburg-best fourth-place finish at regionals.
