Good Afternoon and welcome to the Greenfields sports arena for today's match v high flying Runcorn Linnets FC. I would like to wish Runcorn Linnets FC players, officials, and supporters an enjoyable afternoon here in Shropshire and a safe journey home. As I stated two weeks ago, several players have left the club and new players have joined the squad. Good Luck to those players who have decided to play elsewhere and a warm welcome to those who have joined during the club with a view to progress up this tough league. We are still searching for the right manager to take the club forward and I have interviewed prospective managers, but talks did not reach a suitable outcome for both parties. Thanks for your continued support during these difficult times.

Thanks for your attendance, Mick Murphy Chairman.

Runcorn Linnets are determined to make up for lost time with Calum McIntyre’s senior men’s side certainly hoping that 2021-22 runs its course after two successive Covidcurtailed seasons. The young manager is now in his second year in charge and looking to build on a promising platform laid over the six months of action, which were possible in 20-21 – before the pandemic again called a premature halt to proceedings, in this instance at the turn of the year. With a blend of proven non-league experience and youthful exuberance, Calum has nurtured an excellent playing environment with his coaching skills, man management and meticulous attention to detail. Runcorn were on the fringes of the play-off positions in the Northern Premier League North West Division when they unwittingly signed off with a victory at Prescot Cables on Boxing Day 2020. Calum, at 27 years old, is one of the youngest managers in the football pyramid and also one of its brightest prospects as a UEFA B licensed coach. On appointment, Calum quickly named former Norwich City and Aberdeen deender, Colin Woodthorpe as his Runcorn assistant. Colin had successfully held the same managerial positions at both Colwyn Bay and AFC Fylde. Also head of Academy at our fellow fans club Chester FC , Calum is fiercely ambitious to make a success of his maiden managerial role at senior level. He has retained the majority of players from the 20-21 squad while recruiting early in summer 2021 to ensure that areas identified for improvement were promptly addressed and the team was fully prepared for an important pre-season after the enforced, extended lay-off. A key element in the management and coaching strategy and playing style is the club’s state-of-the-art pitch,

which presents Linnets with an outstanding surface. It was installed in summer of 2020, Linnets having been chosen to take part in the second phase of Sport England's hybrid carpet pilot programme. The project, also in conjunction with the Football Foundation, Premier League, The Football Association and Cheshire FA, involved the laying of the durable international-standard pitch, comprising 95% natural grass, growing through and intertwined with the grass fibre carpet. Its unveiling was the culmination of two years of hard work. The pitch benefits all sections of the club – being used for matches by the first team, Development and Academy teams plus the Linnets Ladies (playing in the North West League) while Akidemy and junior players, managers and coaches can use it for training. The pitch is also available for hire by community clubs and organisations. The other major happenings in the 2020 close season involved the departures of Linnets' long-serving management team of boss Michael Ellison and assistant Matt Cross plus the retirement through injury of influential player and club captain, Kyle Hamid. Only Matt Atherton (313) has mad more appearances than Kyle's 261* with Michael Ellison, Mark Houghton and Rob Whyte the only other double century makers. Ello and Crossy had been in charge since summer 2016 after both playing for the club and are assured of legendary status at Linnets on account of their on-field service and managerial achievement in bringing the club its first championship success. They had also overseen Runcorn’s first two seasons in the NPL after promotion as North West Counties League Premier Division title winners of 201718 - Linnets putting the disappointment of multiple near misses firmly behind them.

RUNCORN LINNETS www.runcornlinnetsfc.co.uk

After three runners-up finishes in the previous four seasons, promotion as a top two finisher was finally clinched on April 28th 2018 on the 12th anniversary of the club's foundation. The title was duly secured on May 3rd 2018 with a 5-0 home victory over Blackpool outfit, Squires Gate. This longawaited league crown was captured with two matches to spare and 100 points – a club record 122 league goals being scored over the 44 games with 36 conceded. A crowd of 890 – still the record attendance for a Linnets home league match – saw the title trophy being lifted by jubilant club captain, Kyle Hamid on the final day of the season. A subsequent attendance of 962 for the Buildbase FA Trophy visit of FC United of Manchester on November 23rd 2019 is the highest for a competitive Runcorn fixture at The Linnets Stadium, which turned 10 years old in July 2020. The club enjoyed a very creditable introduction to Northern Premier League life in 2018-19 as members of its West Division. This is the only NPL season which Linnets have hitherto been able to complete due to coronavirus, eventually missing out on a playoff spot on goals difference. After further reorganisation of the league structure, seeing the creation of a third NPL division at Step 4 for 2021-22, Linnets now revert to being members of the West Division with the North West Division being abolished. Linnets have come a long way since being founded in 2006 by supporters of former national non-league champions, Runcorn AFC after a traumatic end for the old club. The initial aims had been to bring the successor Linnets back to Runcorn and establish the club as one of which the community could be proud. Both these ambitions were achieved with the club still in its infancy..

The stadium in the Murdishaw area of Runcorn, opened in 2010 with the project having been supported by Halton Borough Council, the FA and Football Foundation as well as the club and its fans. Winter 2017 saw the completion of a replacement £1.4 million clubhouse as part of wider redevelopment of surrounding land with retail and leisure facilities. At the same time, pitches outside the stadium were fenced in for use by the Linnets' numerous junior teams with the club also signing a new long-term lease for the extended site with Halton Council. Runcorn Linnets Football Club was born after Runcorn AFC had intimated it would not be in a position to field a team beyond the end of 2005-06 season. Upon leaving town in 2001, the now defunct club had suffered a troubled and nomadic existence. Fans met at their spiritual home of Canal Street – in the then Quayside Bar and Function Rooms, next to the Linnets Park housing estate on which Runcorn AFC's ground had once stood. An existing Supporters Trust was remodelled to run Runcorn Linnets, whose identity was derived from Runcorn AFC's nickname. The new club spent its first four years playing home games as tenants of Witton Albion FC at Wincham Park, Northwich - gaining promotion at the first attempt to the top division of the North West Counties League under the management of Steve Carragher, who had been the predecessor club's last team boss. Victory against Formby in the NWCL Challenge Cup final in 2012-13 brought a first winners' trophy for the first team. Former Runcorn AFC player, Joey Dunn was the then manager.

RUNCORN LINNETS www.runcornlinnetsfc.co.uk

Paul McNally is another "old boy" of the original club to have managed the new with Steve Wilkes being the only manager prior to the present incumbent not to have had any previous Linnets connections. Wilkes had in 2009 led the Linnets to their first ever final, only to be beaten to the League Cup by New Mills at Tameside Stadium, which would be the scene for the club's triumph in the same competition four years later. The abandoned 2019-20 season saw Linnets make their debut in the NPL Academy as they looked to expand on firm foundations. The 20-21 cohort went on to reach the ESPFA National finals as winners of the Northern section. Linnets’ recently-formed U21s team, which was to be renamed the Development team in summer 2021, also flourished from the outset. The end of its first season saw one of the star players, Eden Gumbs earn promotion to the first team squad for 2021-22 with the hope that many more will follow his example.

RUNCORN LINNETS www.runcornlinnetsfc.co.uk

Peter Wylie (Club Captain) Peter’s NPL experience has been pivotal to the club settling into life at Step 4 of the National League System, the central defender having kicked off this season with more than 80 Linnets appearances under his belt. He represented Blackburn Rovers at youth level and joined us from Marine in August 2018. Peter played 55 games for Stalybridge’s National League North team and has also appeared for Skelmersdale United.

Alex Downes Centre back Alex put pen to paper in October 2020, linking up with the Linnets after being Supporters Player of the Year at Colwyn Bay in the shortened 2019-20 season. The move marked a Northern Premier League return for the Chester FC Academy graduate, who previously played in the competition on loan at Ramsbottom United and also for Bay before the latter moved into the Welsh pyramid.

Ryan Brooke The experienced striker was the first new signing by incoming boss Calum McIntyre on taking charge in 2020. He made 29 first-team appearances for Oldham Athletic before establishing himself as one of North West non-league’s great characters during spells at Altrincham and Curzon Ashton.

Eden Gumbs Hometown striker Eden in summer 2021 became he first to follow the pathway into the Linnets first team from the Under 21s Development side. As well as representing our U21s with distinction, Eden last season got a taste of open-age football with North West Counties League side, Barnton.

Ally Brown The attacking right back joined Linnets in March 2019 - having won promotion to NPL Premier Division with both Trafford and Warrington Town. Fast-raiding Ally’s other clubs have included Radcliffe Borough, Chorley, Droylsden and Witton Albion.

Sam Harding Sam was promptly snapped up after impressive trial performances this pre-season. Formerly with Longridge Town and FC United of Manchester, midfield man Sam has represented Manchester County FA and England Schoolboys. He was signed by Clitheroe in 2019-20.

Stuart Crilly

Louis Hayes Louis was re-engaged in summer 2021 for his third season, having become one of the Linnets’ most effective and consistent performers. The highly-rated young midfielder has greatly impressed everyone with his physicality and maturity. Named player of the year by the Linnets Insider website in the abridged 202021 campaign, Louis started out at Blackburn Rovers after also interesting Burnley.

Stuart signed from Chester in the 2020-21 close season. He had joined the Deva club from Oldham in March 2017 and appeared for them in the Cheshire Senior Cup. An attacking midfielder, Stuart spent time the season before last at Prescot Cables in the NPL and NWCL Premier Division outfit Rylands (now Warrington Rylands 1906).

RUNCORN LINNETS www.runcornlinnetsfc.co.uk

Rhain Hellawell The 2021-22 close season saw winger Rhain reunited with Linnets manager Calum for whom he played in the Chester FC Academy before moving into first team contention. Rhain had started out at his local club Stockport Town, appearing in the NWCL Premier Division at 16 years old. He has also played for FC United of Manchester and Radcliffe, having loan spells at Barnoldswick Town, Widnes and City of Liverpool.

Iwan Murray Iwan joined the Linnets in summer 2020 from Chester, where he had been a contract player making 20 first-team appearances with three goals. The diminutive playmaker was previously at Denbigh Town and Rhyl. Iwan gained Step 3 NPL experience on loan at Warrington Town and Atherton Colls and has produced some mercurial midfield displays since joining Runcorn.

Craig Lindfield Having joined from Marine in January, this attacking midfielder is a former England U19 international, who twice won the FA Youth Cup with Liverpool before making more than 100 Football League appearances for Macclesfield Town and Accrington Stanley. Craig has also played for FC United of Manchester, Curzon Ashton and Radcliffe.

Oladapo Olarewaju ‘Dapo’ was recruited by the Linnets from Under 19s football at third tier German professional outfit SV Meppen in December 2020, shortly before the further suspension of football due to Covid. A right winger, who previously featured in the NPL Premier Division for Hyde United, ‘Dapo’s’ progression through the Tigers’ youth ranks had been overseen by Mike Allcock, now our first-team coach.

Joe Lynch Joe is a tenacious midfielder, who most recently played for Lower Breck in the North West Counties League. A spell with Morecambe from July 2019 saw him quickly progress to first team duty in the EFL Trophy. Joe had previously been on contract at Crewe Alexandra, graduating from their Academy and playing against Linnets in the Cheshire Senior Cup. Michael (MJ) Monaghan This highly-rated wide man arrived in summer 2021 from Prescot Cables, having in between two spells at Volair Park played in Australia for title-winning Corio Soccer Club. ‘MJ’ has also served Witton Albion, had three spells at Marine, and has also represented Northwich Victoria, Burscough (22 goals helping them into the NPL First Division North play offs), AFC Telford United and Bradford Park Avenue.

Sean O’Mahony Commanding centre half Sean has played in the Irish League for Cobh Ramblers and Premier Division side Cork City. He also starred for University College Cork in The Munster League, representing Irish Colleges and Universities. Sean signed for Linnets after coming to England to study in Chester and having waited a month for his debut, he burst onto the scene with a goal in each of his first two games – including a stoppage-time winner in The Buildbase FA Trophy at Sheffield FC in October 2020.

RUNCORN LINNETS www.runcornlinnetsfc.co.uk

James Short Prior to switching to The Linnets Stadium for the 2020-21 season, left back James was a regular at Witton Albion and he has shown Runcorn fans why he is so highly rated. James had joined Albion in summer 2019 after five years at Marine. His other previous clubs include Morecambe, Warrington Town, Skelmersdale United and Burscough. Laurence Smith Laurence worked his way into Calum McIntyre’s plans for this season, after his summer exit from Fleetwood Town. In 2019, the midfielder had signed a 12-month contract extension at the Fylde Coast club after progressing from the Development Squad to make the bench in Sky Bet League Two. Laurence has also appeared for the Cod Army in the EFL Trophy. Carl Spellman Carl is a 19-year-old defender or defensive midfield man, who was previously on the books of Tranmere Rovers. He made three first-team appearances for the Prenton Park outfit, after playing for their Under 18s. Two of these outings were in the EFL Trophy, against the U23s sides from Manchester United and Leicester City. Jacques Welsh The versatile Welsh teenager arrived at The Linnets Stadium in summer 2020 from Flint Town United. Able to play at centre back, full back or in midfield, Jacques started at Bolton Wanderers and was on professional forms at Tranmere before switching to Flint midway through 2017-18.

Paddy Wharton The goalkeeper was signed from Warrington Town in September 2020 without ever playing for the Yellows - he had joined them a month earlier in the extended close season, after serving FC United of Manchester and Atherton Collieries. Paddy initially came to prominence in the youth set-up at Tranmere Rovers, signing professional forms and appearing for the first team in an EFL Trophy tie. Joe Young Joe is an 18-year-old goalkeeper, who joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in time for the new season, having represented England at Under 16s, U17s and U18s levels. Born in Telford, Joe signed for Wolves as an eight year old. His skills were rewarded with his first professional contract in spring 2020. He has starred for his club's Under 18s and U23s.
