CLUB HISTORY CLUB HISTORY
Abbey Hulton United Football Club was formed 73 years ago in 1947, making it one of the oldest formed clubs still playing Saturday football in North Staffordshire.
During its very early days the club played on Council land in the Abbey Hulton area. It continued to use this facility for the first 15 years, despite the fact that the changing facilities were more than a mile away from the actual pitch.
In 1962 it was decided that the team should move to the Parks facility at Bucknall Park which was complete with its own changing rooms and showers adjacent to the pitch. What a luxury.
The team continued to use Bucknall Park for another 23 years, until 1985.
During the period from 1947 to 1985 the team played in many local junior leagues such as:
• The Longton League
• Fenton and District League
• Burslem and Tunstall League
• Newcastle and District League
They graced all the above leagues with great distinction.
Over the years the club became more financially stable and grew in ambition. Finally in 1985 they acquired a piece of land at Birches Head Road on which it was able to obtain a 99 year lease. This is the clubs current address. Immediately, a clubhouse was built containing a bar and changing rooms for both teams and officials. At the same time an outside 5 a-side football facility was built, complete with floodlights.
Having moved to this new facility the club opted to join the North Staffs Alliance League. It completed in this leauge before seeking election to one of the top leagues in the area, The Staffs County League (North), in 1987. The team played in this league and finally had a momentous season in 1997-1998 by winning the league, the cup and also the fair play award all in one season. Having achieved this feat the club applied to join what is the top junior league in North Staffordshire, the Staffordshire County Senior League. In 2017 Abbey Hulton United won the Staffordshire County Senior Premier League Championship and were promoted to the North West County Football League.

THE SEASON REVIEW

The season has been split into different periods of different runs of form, it’s been a strange one. August and September, we were really hit and miss.
October and November were our best period winning 7 games, 5 on the bounce in November which saw us win club if the month, which was a really pleasing moment for the team and the club. December, Jan, and Feb again we were hit and miss with our results. Towards the end of Feb, we lost Robbo who was banging goals in for us, that has had a massive effect on the team, and we’ve only won one game since that happened, drawing and losing them all, including the cup semifinal away at Bacup.
There’s been a lot more positives come out of the season than previously. We’ve found a way to play which has seen us concede a lot less goals and score a lot more goals than normal. We’ve had some great results than I don’t think anybody expected, and on our day, we’ve matched the biggest and better teams in the league. We’ve reached a cup semi-final as well. We know what we have got to do to improve next season and try to achieve our goals next time around.
Hopefully we can win our last 2 games and finish as high as possible.

AsfoundermembersoftheDoveValleyLeague,Rocesterplayed theirfirstcompetitivefootballinthe1892-93season,butitwasn’t until1911whentheAshbourneNewsCupprovidedtheclubwithits firstevertrophy.
Severalmorehonoursfollowedduringthe1920sand1930sinlocalcompetitionsbefore theclubdisbandedin1939duetotheoutbreakofWorldWarII
Reformedin1946,Rocesterweresoonamongthehonoursagain,andamoveintothe StaffordAmateurLeaguein1953broughtunprecedentedsuccesswhennolessthan eighttrophieswerewoninjustthreeseasons.
TheclubsteppedupintotheStaffordshireCountyLeague(North)in1957,andremained inmembershipwithvaryingdegreesofsuccessuntiltheformationoftheStaffordshire Seniorleaguein1984.TheappointmentofretiredBlackCountrybusinessmanDonHillas Chairmanledtoarapidrise,andundertheguidanceofformerplayerAlanBeamanthe clubwonitsfirstseniorhonourswhenboththeSeniorLeaguetitleandtheStaffordshire F.A.Vasewereannexedin1986.
Furthersuccessfollowedin1987whentheSeniorLeaguetitlewasretained,andonlya penaltyshoot-outdefeatintheStaffordshireF.A.VaseFinalpreventedarepeatofthe ‘double’achievedayearearlier.
1986-87provedtobeamemorableseasonintheFA Vase,whichRocesterhadentered forthefirsttime.StartingintheExtraPreliminary,theyreachedthelast16,knockingout theholdersandhotfavouritesHalesowenTownalongthewaybeforeaclubrecord attendanceof1,026atLeekTown’sHarrisonparkground.
Duringthesummerof1987Rocestermovedfromtheiroldhome,intruthnomorethana fieldwithwoodenchangingrooms,tothepresentground,namedatthetimeas Riversfield.ThenewgroundwasbuiltonthesiteofanancientRomanfort,whichledto theadoptionoftheirnickname‘TheRomans’.
AtthesametimetheclubjoinedDivisionOneoftheWestMidlands(Regional)League wheretheyremainedunbeatenintheirfirst22gamesbeforegoingontoclaimthe championshipwithsomeease.TheRomansalsowontheLeagueCupandthe StaffordshireF.A.Vasetocompleteamagnificenttreble.
RocestertooktheirplaceinthePremierDivisionandfollowinganinitialmid-tablefinish theymadeachallengeforthetitlein1989-90onlytobeedgedinto2ndplaceby HinckleyTownongoal-difference.
In1994RocesterbecamefoundermembersoftheMidlandFootballAlliance,andin1998 claimedsecondplacebehindBloxwichTown.Howeverthefollowingseasonpromotion totheSouthernLeaguewasachievedasMFAChampions Theground,nowrenamed ‘Hillsfield’inmemoryofDonHillwhodiedin1996,hadalreadymettherequiredgrade.
TheRomansreachedtheStaffsSeniorCupfinalforthefirsttimein2001,butstruggledin theSouthernLeagueuntilbeingrelegatedbackintotheMidlandAlliancein2003after fourseasonsaway.Howeverthatdisappointmentwasquicklyforgottenwhenthe MidlandAlliancetitlewaswonatthefirstattempt,thistimewithpromotionintothe NorthernPremierLeague.Themovenorthsignalledabigdownturninfortunesandthe Romanswentthroughacompleteseasonwithoutaleaguevictoryin2004-05.
OnceagainrelegatedbackintotheMidlandAlliance,thedownwardtrendproved difficulttoreverseandalthoughperformancesimproved,itwasn'tuntilJanuary2006 thattheteamfinallyrecordeditsfirstleaguewin,a3-1successatQuorn,toendarunof 67leaguegameswithoutawin Afterfinishingbottom,asecondsuccessiverelegation wasonlyavoidedduetoleaguerestructuring.
Aftertwodisastrousyearstheclubbegantomoveforwardagainandarespectable12th placefinishwasattainedin2006-07alongwitharuntothe3rdQualifyingRoundofthe F.A.CupwheretheRomanslostnarrowlyatKetteringTowninfrontofover1000 spectators.
TheRomanscontinuedtoimproveduring2007-08,andtheseasonendedonahigh whenKidsgroveAthleticwerebeaten3-0intheStaffsSeniorCupFinalatValePark–the firstandsofartheonlytimeRocesterhavewontheprestigioustrophy.
FormerplayerDaveLangstonprovedthemostsuccessfulofseveralmanagersoverthe nextsevenyears,buthisdeparturein2013decimatedthesquadandacompleterebuild wasrequired.Followingapoorstarttheteamfailedtorecoversufficiently,andafter finishinginthebottomthreetheRomansweresparedrelegationonlyafterGornal AthleticweredeductedpointsandHighgateUnitedfailedtoattainthenecessary ground-grading-meaningtheclubcouldbeginthe2014-15campaigninthePremier Divisionofthenewly-formedMidlandFootballLeague.
MarkWilson’sappointmentasManagerinSeptember2014sawfortunesimprove dramatically,andinhisfirstseasoninchargehisteamfinished12thandreachedthe finaloftheLeagueCup.
WilsonresignedinJanuary2015,butunderhissuccessorDannyMartintheclubwere relegatedintotheMFLDivision1in2017.AndyO’Connorreturnedtosteadytheship beforeformerplayerPaulWrighttookchargeinSeptember2019.
