VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT

Good afternoon to all our supporters for what will be another tough test for our young side against league newcomers Isle Of Man FC. We wish all the players, committee members, management staff and supporters of IOM a safe journey over. Those who attended last weeks game will probably still be asking themselves how we didn’t come away from the game against Abbey Hey with any points. With five first team regulars missing for various reasons, we had to reshuffle the pack and give chances to players who haven’t perhaps had as much chance this season. Our performance was full of grit and determination, with every member of the playing squad on the day giving us their everything against one of the leagues top sides. A very debatable penalty decision in the final minute of the game at 2-2 cost the lads of a deserved point. Although we lost the game we took nothing but positives away from it , and the players were rightly clapped off from the field of play. The performance has given us some tough but welcomed selection headaches going into today’s game. Looking back on the games and training sessions that have taken place during my time here, I’m incredibly proud of the playing squad for the turnaround in performance and attitude. We still have a couple of signings to bring in and improve competition for places, but I’m confident now that we have enough quality and believe in this group to climb the table and away from trouble.

The next four fixtures are huge for us, playing sides around us in the table. These are the games we need to get supporters down to Pershall Park and get behind the team. We will continue to build a side that you can be proud of and enjoy to watch.

Liam Kelly

Eccleshall FC There has been football in the town of Eccleshall for over 100 years but very little archive material is available from those early years. However, we do know that Eccleshall Football Club was reformed in 1971 with the team being made up of locals and staff from the Eccleshall Secondary School which also provided training and playing facilities. At that time, the club was called Eccleshall Old Boys Football Club. In 1974, the team won their first trophies; the Mid-Staffs 3rd Division Cup and were also runners-up in that division, gaining promotion to Division 2. Old Boys was dropped from the club’s name and in 1979 the first team joined the Staffordshire County League (North) and a third team was formed. In 1981, with the help of grants, fund raising and a loan, a four-acre field was purchased at Pershall. Then manager, Ted Dickinson, was the driving force behind the fund raising. In the same year, the first team moved into the Premier Division of the Staffordshire County League (North). Work began converting the field into a football ground. In 1982, a building was purchased from British Telecom and, with a lot of hard work over the next couple of years on the building, car park and pitch, Pershall Park, as it was christened, was ready. In the 1983-84 season, the first team won the Staffordshire County League Premier Division Championship, the Premier Division Cup and the May Bank Cup. During the 1989-90 season, the first team won the Staffordshire Senior League title and the 1990-91 season saw the club entering the FA Vase for the first time. In 1991-92, the club reached the FA Vase 2nd round having gone through all the preliminary stages but lost at home to Wisbech Town 2-0 in front of a then record crowd of 368. The first team fared well in the league in the mid to late 90’s, finishing 3rd (97-98), 6th (98-99), 2nd (99-00) and 3rd (00-01). Eccleshall reserves won the Staffordshire County League (North) in 1999-2000 moving to the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One (North) for the start of the following season. In the 2001-2002 season, the first team won the Springbank Vending Midland League Championship.

Eccleshall FC In 2002-2003 Eccleshall’s first team joined the North West Counties Football League after securing both the Springbank Vending Midland League title and Staffordshire FA Vase. In probably the most successful season in the club’s history, our second team were also Staffordshire County League champions and our Under 18s won the Sentinel Cup. For good measure, our Under 16s won the Staffordshire FA County Cup, the Mid-Staffordshire League Cup and the Sentinel Shield. Regarding the Sentinel competitions, the last time a club had won both trophies in the same season had been some twenty five years previously – a great achievement. The 2012-13 season marked the completion of 10 years in the North West Counties League and saw the club achieve its highest ever placing of sixth in Division 1. In 2017-18, our Under 17s had a very successful season, winning the Potteries Junior Youth League Cup, Staffordshire FA Youth Cup and finishing runners up in the league. Over the years since 1981-82, significant work has been undertaken to develop both the ground and the facilities to the required standard of the National League Pyramid which the club now enjoys. This includes enclosing the ground, the installation of floodlights, building a covered seated stand and pitch levelling. In 2019, a new toilet block was installed and previously the clubhouse was refurbished and upgraded with the addition of a treatment room and a security system. Prior to the 2018/19 season, a new kitchen and refreshments bar was added. For the 2021-22 season the team dugouts have been replaced and more spectator improvements made. Further developments to the ground are planned for the future. All of this has been achieved by a strong committee management team behind the scenes, a number of which have given many years of service to Eccleshall FC together with the addition of new members who are helping to take the club forward. The club has now added a number of junior teams as we look to develop a junior section. Our second pitch has been upgraded and improved to accommodate this. 2021 sees Eccleshall Football Club celebrate its 50th anniversary and, as can be seen from the above, much has been achieved over that time. We look forward to seeing what the future brings. We consider ourselves a friendly club and look forward to welcoming you to Pershall Park in the future and hope you will enjoy the facilities and the football.

BITS AND PIECES The Marathon Men Congratulations to manager Liam Kelly and skipper Harvey Collins who completed their respective marathons last weekend. Liam was running the London Marathon to raise funds for the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) after losing one of his friends a few years ago. Harvey was running the Chester Marathon to raise money for the club – more specifically for the proposed 50-seater stand in memory of Jake Standbridge which we are looking to install on the clubhouse side of the ground and which will be named after him. Both turned in respectable times for their runs, Liam completing in 3hr 38min and Harvey in 3hr 45min. Hopefully both will have raised decent sums as a reward for the many hours of training they have put in over the last few months. Well done Liam and Harvey!

New Club Minibus A short while ago, the club purchased a 17-seater Ford Transit minibus from club funds for player / management travel to away matches. Its first run was to New Mills for the league match on 18. September. In the longer term, it is hoped that this investment will save the club money in travel expenses. Aside from the cost of the vehicle, money had to be found for the insurance, tax, and also a recovery policy. All at Eccleshall FC are grateful to Ollie Moxham of former kit sponsor, ClickDealer, for providing a four-figure sum in sponsorship towards meeting the costs involved. Ollie and his dad Gerry have been good friends of the club over the last few years in providing annual sponsorship and in these tough times following the Covid pandemic, this assistance is most welcome and greatly appreciated.

Well done Callum More good news was received this week when the League notified us that Callum Feeney was the First Division South winner of the Player of the Month award for September. Each club is required to submit nominations at the end of each month during the season and these are then assessed by League officials to determine the overall divisional winners. Callum’s case was certainly helped (aside from his overall performances in the four matches during the month) by the fact that Cheadle Heath Nomads, St Martins and New Mills all nominated him as the ‘man of the match’ following those games in September. He will be receiving an award from the League at today’s match and both Ian Williams and John Reid from the League Management Committee will be in attendance. Everyone at Eccleshall congratulates Callum for an award which is well deserved.

Vale coming to Pershall The draw for the Staffordshire Senior Cup has been made and the Eagles have picked up a ‘plum’ tie, having been drawn to face Port Vale at Pershall Park. The date for the game has not yet been finalised but it has to be played before early December and will be a midweek match. This will not be the first time that Eccleshall have faced ‘The Valiants’ in the competition, having met them at Pershall Park back in 2007 and on that occasion were the victors, winning 3-2 on the evening with goals from Steve Brunt, Dwayne Spence and Rob Adlington in front of a crowd of 133. In that season, we beat Stoke City in the previous round and managed to reach the semi-finals before going out to eventual winners, Rocester. We are looking forward to what should be a challenging match and another good evening for the club. Further details will be released when they are to hand.

Happy Birthday Jim Gamble Young Eagles fan Jim Gamble attended the match against Abbey Hey last Saturday with his dad Ben and had a day to remember to celebrate his 8th birthday. All of the Eccleshall first team players signed a ball and, as a bonus, he was photographed on the pitch before the game with the two team captains and the match officials. Jim and his dad come to as many Eccleshall games as they can, and he loves football and coming along to Pershall Park. He is a budding player himself, having just started playing locally and training on a Saturday morning before watching the Eagles in the afternoon. Many happy returns for last week, Jim! Welcome to FC ISLE OF MAN In August 2019, F.C. Isle of Man confirmed their intentions to enter a team into the English football league system at step six of non-league. On 8 October 2019, the club announced it had become affiliated with the Isle of Man Football Association, following the backing of clubs in the Manx football system. On 18 February 2020, St Georges manager Chris Bass was announced as the club's first manager. On 21 February 2020, the North West Counties Football League confirmed F.C. Isle of Man had submitted an application to join the league in time for the 2020–21 season. On 21 July 2020, it was announced that the club would participate in the North West Counties Football League First Division South. Due to the COVID–19 restrictions, the team withdrew from the 2020–21 FA Vase before their first qualifying round match. On 7 December, the club was temporarily suspended from the league as it had become apparent that they would not be able to complete all their fixtures by 31 May 2021, as required by The Football Association. F.C. Isle of Man played their first competitive match against Maine Road on 31 July 2021, with Frank Jones scoring the club's first competitive goal. The match ended in a 1–1 draw.

ADDED TIME HEARTBREAK FOR EAGLES

Amateurs, Eccleshall were looking to After Tuesday night’s heroics against Wythenshawe

build on that momentum as they faced another highflying team in Abbey Hey. Their task was not made any easier with skipper Harvey Collins, Callum Feeney and Lewis Dunn all missing and Jordan Benton having to withdraw with injury in the pre-match warm up. Eagles got off to the best possible start when they took the lead after two minutes. A cross from Luke Lewis found Jack Flanaghan and his shot zipped into the bottom corner past Hey keeper Ross Heywood. This immediately prompted Hey to apply pressure to the Eagles defence and on 26 minutes, a Dylan Fitzgerald shot from distance beat Eagles keeper Aaron Woolrich but came back off the bar. The pressure continued as Hey looked for an equaliser and a Ben Halfacre effort was charged down by Jake Langdridge. Fitzgerald tried another from distance and Woolrich went full length to palm the ball away under the tricky conditions. On 38 minutes, a Louis Downs free kick outside the box was easily collected by Heywood. Having defended stoutly for much of the half, Eagles were undone right on half time when Kieran Nolan equalised, his effort from outside the box finding the top corner of the net giving Woolrich no chance. HT: Eccleshall 1 Abbey Hey 1 Within a minute of the restart, Eccleshall took the lead again, referee Brooks spotting a handball in the box and awarding a penalty. With regular taker Benton missing, Downs took the responsibility and sent Heywood the wrong way to find the net. Stung by conceding an early goal again, Hey immediately went on the front foot and a ball from the right led to Rhys Clooney heading into the side netting. Then Fitzgerald ran clear, and his effort was just wide of the post. Another corner led to a downward header which was cleared of the line by the Eagles defence. In response, a quick Eccleshall move from defence to attack involving Jordan Hall and Downs led to Jay Lovatt’s effort being blocked by Heywood’s legs. Woolrich was forced to make another save as Hey moved forward again and, under constant pressure, Eccleshall needed another goal as a safety blanket. It was Woolrich again, palming away another piledriver from outside the box with the Eagles defence putting their bodies on the line to preserve their lead. With ten minutes to go, Hey’s pressure finally paid off when Fitzgerald drove the ball into the roof of the net to equalise. Woolrich was forced into another save before Jack Dundas curled a shot just wide of the post. With the game moving into added time, Eagles were still defending solidly and looked as though they would hold out for a valuable point. However, fate dealt them a cruel blow in the 94th minute when the linesman apparently spotted a handball in the box and referee Brooks awarded a strongly disputed penalty. Jordan Lazenbury stepped up to tuck away the spot kick and break Eagles hearts, the final whistle going very shortly afterward. FT: Eccleshall 2 Abbey Hey 3 Eagles have now turned in two strong performances against top four sides and face another home match next Saturday when FC Isle of Man are the visitors to Pershall Park. Eagles: Woolrich, Tomlin, Woodroffe, Lovatt (Riley), Langdridge, Taylor, Lewis, Flanaghan (Redford), Hall (Dundas), Downs. Unused sub: Gilpin Referee: Mr Jordan Brooks
