TALK OF THE TOWN Welcome back to the Red Industries Stadium for our opening pre-season game of 22-23 when Salford City will be the visitors as part of the deal that took James Melhado to them, It is also a return to the Lyme Valley for Salford who we played on several occasions in the North West Counties League. Most of the Newcastle players will be familiar with striker Callum Parker joining us from Nantwich and Jake Lovatt being joined by brother Callum from Kidsgrove having spent some time at Chasetown as well. The Management Team have several other irons in the fire and some may be on show today. Coach Paul Wright has left the club for pastures new at Leek but we have a more than adequate replacement in coach Nigel Keogh who joins us from Buxton. Next Saturday we welcome Stafford Rangers to the Red Industries Stadium and the following Saturday Chasetown are our vistors. Both games have an entrance fee of £5 and £3 with Under 16s free when accompanied by an adult. By the time we play Stafford we will know our opponents in the early rounds of both the Emirates FA Cup and the Isuzu FA Trophy. The Under 18s will also know their opponents in the FA Youth Cup.
CHAIRMAN CHATS With Gavin Appleby I’d like to start by welcoming you all to the Red Industries Stadium for today's fixture versus Salford City FC. It will be good to see many familiar faces return, hopefully, some new ones and of course, to remember those no longer with us; Paul Ratcliffe you are still missed every day. As with all non-league clubs, there are a lot of jobs to complete over the Summer. It has been a slightly quieter Summer in terms of building work, we have spent a lot of money bringing the facilities up to standard over several years and this season are looking for progress on the field. I’d like to especially extend a warm welcome to Nigel Keogh who joins Robins coaching staff this Summer. Another big development this Summer has been the creation of a reserve team to fully support our male pathway. This will be headed by club legend Dean Gillick. Speaking of pathways, we are also delighted to create a Women’s division within the club, something I am sure you agree is long overdue. I plan to complete weekly programme notes throughout the season to try and keep everyone informed on the many activities taking place at the club. As always - if you want to help us make the club better, put your money or feet where your mouth is and get involved.

View from the Dugout Today we want to give a warm welcome to Salford City FC’s staff, directors, and fans in what is our 1st pre-season game of the 22/23 campaign. I also want to welcome back our fans and it will be great to reconnect with you all after 10 weeks without football. You will all have an opportunity to see former Newcastle Town player James Melhado playing for Salford City and get to see his progression since his Newcastle Town days “Welcome back James”. This game will be a stern test for us and will be another step closer to full fitness. Pre-season has been great so far and started 5 weeks ago with the players just putting in the miles at home in a controlled training program. The last 3 weeks have been very intensive, with 3 sessions a week and mostly working with the ball and the odd hill training session. It’s all part of creating the fittest group of players in the league to go with our talent and hunger as is expected from a young group of players. Today will be extra tough as we have 5 of our core players away on holiday which is frustration but part and parcel of management in non-league. It will however give some of our younger players and trialists an opportunity to step up to the plate and grab a shirt. We very much a club that believe that if you get your shirt “Don’t give it back” with a poor or low energy performance, so this is their opportunity. We are expecting a great day of football for both sets of fans to enjoy both on and off the pitch in our hospitality areas. Enjoy your day

WELCOME SALFORD CITY FC In 1940 Salford Central was formed with the club playing in local leagues around the City. Salford Central were Champions of the Eccles & District League Division 2 in 1955-56 and 1959-60, and Division 3 in 1958-59. The Club changed its name to Salford Amateurs in 1963 on joining the Manchester League, and the Manchester League Division 1 title was won in 1968-69 to earn promotion to the Manchester League Premier Division. Our nickname 'The Ammies', or 'Ammeys' as it sometimes appeared, derived from being Salford Amateurs. Salford became a major force in local leagues during the 1970s, winning the Manchester League Premier Division on four occasions, the Lancashire FA Amateur Cup three times, the Manchester FA Challenge Trophy twice and the Manchester FA Intermediate Cup (now known as the Manchester Premier Cup) twice. Salford Football Club, with the 'Amateurs' tag dropped, moved into Moor Lane in 1978 with the first game taking place against Abbey Hey in the Manchester League Premier Division on Saturday 16th September 1978, which Salford won 5-1 (Cairns x2, Thornton x2, Higgs). Plenty of work was required on the ground as the pitch was in poor condition, and the main stand was derelict and without a roof. The work paid off when in 1980 the club were accepted into the semi-professional Cheshire League in 1980, after merging with Anson Villa too. In the 1980-81 season Salford enjoyed a good run in the FA Vase, reaching the Fourth Round. Linotype were beaten 2-0 in the Preliminary Round, Wren Rovers 2-3 in the First Round, Hoylake Athletic 2-1 in the Second Round and Staveley Works 2-1 in the Third Round. That set up a last-32 tie with Whickham who won 2-0 at Moor Lane against as Ammies side wearing red and in front of a reported 2,000 people. The Tyne & Wear side went on to win the competition. After a couple of seasons in the Cheshire League, Salford became founder members of the North West Counties Football League when it formed in 1982 after the amalgamation of the Lancashire Combination and the Cheshire League. We were placed in Division One, then relegated to Division Two in 1990-91, but a league restructuring in 1992 meant we were restored to Division One and under ex-Manchester United centre-half Billy Garton we finished in ninth. Andy Brown led us to third in 2001-02 before Gary Fellows made us one of the dominant sides in the league, winning the NWCFL Challenge Cup in 2006.
Salford City FC| www.salfordcityfc.co.uk
1990 was a big year for Salford as we became Salford City, and floodlights were installed at Moor Lane for the first time. This allowed us entry into the FA Cup, in our 50th year, and in the Preliminary Round we were drawn against Northern Premier League side Warrington Town. The BBC chose to start their 1990-91 Road to Wembley feature at the match, which The Yellows won 30 in front of a crowd of 121. At the end of the 2007-08 season, Gary Fellows' Salford City were promoted to the Unibond Northern Premier League Division One North after a second promotion place was made available in the NWCFL. Having finished second behind Champions Trafford, Salford were promoted to nonleague's fourth tier for the first time in our history! Our first season in the eighth tier was a struggle and at the start of March we had just one win and eight points from 26 games, 15 points from safety. Paul Wright was now in charge of the side, and the club had recently signed striker Steve Foster to add goals. The turnaround in form meant that with three games to go we were four points behind Rossendale United, which was reduced to one point going into the last game at Garforth. Despite being a goal down at half time, we came back to win 5-2 while Rossy were beaten by Mossley. The Ammies had consolidated in the NPL Division One North and in 2012-13 a good start saw us reach as high as fourth at one stage, but after a drop in form Darren Sheridan left with Andy Heald taking over. In the league we slipped to an eventual 16th place finish, but we reached the Final of the Manchester Premier Cup which was held at Stockport County's Edgeley Park. Two goals in the last 15 minutes from Brad Robinson and Danny Whyte saw Salford come from two goals down against Mossley and take the tie to penalties, which the Lilywhites won 4-2. Club President Dave Russell was approached by five of Manchester United's Class of '92 about a possible takeover of Salford City, as they were determined to put something back into local football and wanted to do so in an area that reflected their early training and development. The takeover was ratified by the Committee and Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes became co-owners of Salford, with Peter Lim purchasing a 50% stake in September 2014. Under Phil Power Salford made a good start to the 2014-15 season and led the way under fierce competition from Darlington 1883, however form dipped around November and after a defeat at Droylsden on New Year's Day Power was sacked. A couple of days later it was announced that Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley, who had won promotion with Ramsbottom United, would take over and they revitalised the squad, bringing players like Jordan Hulme, Scott Burton and Steve Howson to the club. 15 wins from 17 saw The Ammies regain top spot and win the NPL Division 1 North with a game to spare. After beating Whitby Town, Curzon Ashton, Bradford Park Avenue and Southport, Salford qualified for the FA Cup First Round for the first time and were drawn against League Two Notts County. The tie was selected for live coverage by the BBC, and on a Friday night in front of a large television audience The Ammies won 2-0 after goals by Danny Webber and Richie Allen in the second half! In the Second Round we were drawn against League Two Hartlepool United, and after Stephen O'Halloran secured a 1-1 draw at Moor Lane we lost the replay 2-0 after extra time at Victoria Park.

The FA Cup was a brilliant story in the season, but in the league Salford were still challenging for a second consecutive promotion. Darlington 1883 finished the season as Champions with 104 points and we had to settle for the play-offs. Ashton United were beaten 3-1 after extra time in the semifinal at Moor Lane to set up a Final against Workington. Twice The Ammies had to come from behind as Stephen O'Halloran and Billy Priestly equalised, before Jordan Hulme popped up in the 87th minute to scramble home the winner and earn promotion to the National League North! Our debut season in the National League North saw us qualify for the play-offs where we were beaten by FC Halifax Town in the semi-finals on penalties. However it marked an important new step in the club's history as the decision to become a full-time, professional club for the first time was taken. The move to full-time reaped its rewards in the first season as we won the National League North 2017-18 title with a game to spare. Harrogate Town set a tough precedent and it wasn't until the end of October that we first reached the top of the table, but we only came off top once from that point. A 1-0 win at Southport on April 17th coupled with a Harrogate defeat at Boston meant that we only had to equal Town's result on the weekend. As it happened Boston won 2-1 at The Peninsula Stadium but defeat for Harrogate confirmed us as Champions, securing promotion to non-league's top flight! In the early summer of 2018 Salford City started a women's team for the first time, and the Salford City Lionesses were born. Competing in the Greater Manchester Women's Football League, the seventh tier of women's football, the Lionesses started their life with a 13-0 win at AFC Urmston Meadowside. In 29 games they won 27, drew one and lost one as the GMWFL treble of League, League Cup and Division 1 Cup was secured! The only defeat came in the last game of the season, the Manchester FA Women's Challenge Cup Final, lost 4-0 to FC United of Manchester. Graham Alexander was confirmed as the club's new manager in May 2018 after the departure of Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley. Under the guidance of Alexander, we embarked upon our first season in non-league's top flight. After a steady start we went on a record-breaking 20-game unbeaten league run, then after a sticky winter patch went 10 games unbeaten to finish third. Eastleigh were beaten in the play-off semi-final on penalties, with Chris Neal saving two. The Promotion Final took place at Wembley Stadium against AFC Fylde, with goals from Mani Dieseruvwe, Carl Piergianni and Ibou Touray securing a 3-0 win, making us the first club to win back-to-back promotions into the Football League! Our debut Sky Bet League Two season started at The Peninsula Stadium against Stevenage, and a brace from Mani Dieseruvwe saw us win 2-0 in front of the Sky Sports cameras! 10 days later we returned home for our debut in the Carabao Cup, where we had been drawn against Leeds United. The Championship giants won 3-0 in front of a Peninsula Stadium record crowd of 4,518. In March 2020 the season was abruptly halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequently the final standings were decided on a points-per-game basis that left Salford in 11th in our debut EFL season. However there was success for the Under-18s who finished top of the EFL Youth Alliance North West, and the Lionesses were also top of the NWWRFL Division 1 South although that division was null and voided.
Salford City FC| www.salfordcityfc.co.uk
Salford won a first major EFL Trophy in March 2021 after beating Portsmouth at Wembley Stadium on penalties in the delayed 2020 Final! After beating Aston Villa Under-21s and Tranmere Rovers in the group stage, The Ammies battled past Wolves Under-21s, Port Vale, Accrington Stanley and Newport County to reach the Final which was postponed by nearly a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Following a 0-0 draw after normal and extra time, Salford won 2-4 on penalties thanks to strikes from Luke Burgess, Mani Dieseruvwe, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Jason Lowe! A tumultuous campaign that took place behind closed doors ended with Salford finishing in 8th, just two points outside the League Two play-offs. Graham Alexander started the campaign in charge, but parted company in October 2020 with Paul Scholes taking interim charge until Richie Wellens was appointed. The former midfielder's tenure lasted until March 2021, when Gary Bowyer was appointed on a short-term basis until the end of the season. Six wins from 11 wasn't quite enough to reach the play-offs, but the impact made by the former Blackburn and Blackpool boss earned him a one-year deal with Salford finishing the 2021-22 campaign in 10th. Neil Wood was appointed as Head Coach in the summer of 2022, joining from a successful spell in charge of Manchester United Under-23s.
Please Welcome back
o d a h l e James M
This week Shaun caught up with James and chatted with him about the move and how he found his first season with Salford City James, massive thank you for your time and we look forward to welcoming you back today. Its been just over a year since you moved on to Salford from us, how were the first few weeks with Salford when you went back into pro football last year, what were the main differences you found straight from the start with them? Yeah, I found the first couple weeks or so pretty intense in terms of the training volume and gym schedule but coped well, was just about getting my body used to a full-time program again. Also was just getting used to speed and demands (quality-wise) that are put on you being back full time. At the time Salford if I recall brought in a fair few new faces to that squad so was it easier to integrate with the squad as other new players were joining the existing players? Yeah, I think it helped for me personally going in for a couple of weeks at the back of the season as I kinda knew a few faces before the 1st day of the new season, but yeah the lads & staff were top draw with me making me feel welcome straight away. You made the matchday squad on the opening game of the season vs Leyton Orient and the following games thereafter and then got your first start in the away game against Oldham in the EFL Cup must have been great to get that shirt on and make your debut, what was your thoughts and feelings ahead of that game? Yeah was nice to make the squad most weeks at the start of season & then also make my debut, I think yeah was a bit nervous the night before ,as you get the squad the day before and was in the starting shape but once the actual game started it just felt like a normal game and settled into the game well after making the debut how hungry were you then for more games and is that what then lead to you going out on loan? and how did you find the loan experiences at Ashton and Telford? Yeah, I think once you get the taste of 1st team football with fans and the experience it brings you just want more. I think I was pretty unfortunate with the injury I had kept me out for 18 weeks because I would like to think I would have made more appearances in the EFL trophy so yeah the loan spell with Ashton was primarily just to go out and get consistent games for a month Saturday Tuesday to make sure my hamstring was okay. Then with Telford, it was to then kick on at the next level, this came with the pressure of the relegation battle which again was a great experience for me and couldn’t have gone better in the end helping they stay up after being almost completely written off by everyone outside of the changing room. I'm sure you would have kept an eye on our mixed season we had last year, but looking ahead to the game which player are you looking forward to coming up against in today's game? I think it’ll be good to see some familiar faces, yeah like looking forward to playing against everyone but especially Ethan obviously who was in the same youth team and also having a season together at Newcastle. and who should we look out for from the Salford squad as possible gems for the future? Erm I think Brandon is some to keep an eye on as you’ll probably see today & a younger lad Kelly N'Mai
Many thanks to James and we wish you all the best for today and for the 2022/23 season.

WILL LLOYD He's One of Our Own
We caught up with Will Lloyd this week ahead of the 2022/23 season to see how he is looking forward to the new season. Before we look ahead to the new season Will lets chat about last season and you having the breakthrough year that you did, what were your highlights of last season and what do you feel you took away the most from your first season with the first team? last season was a great season for me , one highlight from the season would definitely be making my debut in the league which was a special moment for me , another highlight would of been scoring my first goal for the club at marine. The thing I took away most from my first season with the lads would of been learning to manage the game physically and mentally, which I definitely learnt from playing with the lads. Well taken goal as well, is getting into them positions given the chance something that you are looking to add more to your game this season and get more goals on the board. 100% , that is something I really want to push on for this season to add more goals and assists to my game. Looking ahead how has the off season and the start of pre season been for you ? It’s been good obviously it’s been tough but It’s probably been one of my best pre seasons to be honest , I feel fit and sharp and I’m looking forward to get back playing games , Not just me but all of us have put in the work outside of training and it’s definitely payed off because as a group we all look fit and ready to get back playing . Next season will also see us come up against two teams with big followings in Macclesfield and Hanley Town, are these games that you and the rest of the lads are looking forward to playing in front of what is sure to be bumper crowds both home and away Yes for sure , as footballers it’s always good to play in front of big crowds especially in the home fixtures. If the media team ever pull out their finger and get the stadium music sorted what would your GOAL song be? My goal song , I’m not to sure on that one but I’m proper loving ‘lady- hear me tonight’ by Modjo at the moment so I probably throw that in there.
We look forward to watching Will progress again this coming season with us.
