VIEW FROM THE DUGOUT Good evening and welcome to Pershall Park for what is a huge night on and off the pitch for this football club. A big welcome to all players, management staff, and supporters of Stoke City FC. Nights like these don’t come around often for clubs at the level we play at. Although many will think that tonight myself and the players will be turning up just to play our part in a great occasion, I can fully assure you that we are heading into this game looking to progress into the semi-finals and cause another cup upset! I’m sure that many wrote us off against Port Vale in the last round but my players stood tall and deservedly got through the task that night and earned us tonight’s game. As we expect the largest crowd of the season at Pershall Park, it’s important that we don’t get overwhelmed by the occasion and stick to our game plan. If the last round is anything to go by, I’m sure everyone in attendance will be entertained and see how brilliant nonleague football can be. We head into tonight’s game in decent form since Christmas with only 2 defeats in 7, 8th in the league form table. Since my last notes, we had a comfortable 6-0 win over St Martin’s, and on Saturday we lost 1-0 away to 3rd placed Abbey Hey. It speaks volumes of how far we have come as a group that the players were devastated in losing away to one of the top sides in the league. The standards we have set on and off the pitch mean that we now go into every game expecting to take 3 points. We defended well as a unit and limited Abbey to minimal chances. We just needed to be braver in possession and trust our ability in the final third more. Enjoy tonight’s game and thank you for your support

Liam Kelly

Eccleshall FC There has been football in the town of Eccleshall for over 100 years but very little archive material is available from those early years. However, we do know that Eccleshall Football Club was reformed in 1971 with the team being made up of locals and staff from the Eccleshall Secondary School which also provided training and playing facilities. At that time, the club was called Eccleshall Old Boys Football Club. In 1974, the team won their first trophies; the Mid-Staffs 3rd Division Cup and were also runners-up in that division, gaining promotion to Division 2. Old Boys was dropped from the club’s name and in 1979 the first team joined the Staffordshire County League (North) and a third team was formed. In 1981, with the help of grants, fund raising and a loan, a four-acre field was purchased at Pershall. Then manager, Ted Dickinson, was the driving force behind the fund raising. In the same year, the first team moved into the Premier Division of the Staffordshire County League (North). Work began converting the field into a football ground. In 1982, a building was purchased from British Telecom and, with a lot of hard work over the next couple of years on the building, car park and pitch, Pershall Park, as it was christened, was ready. In the 1983-84 season, the first team won the Staffordshire County League Premier Division Championship, the Premier Division Cup and the May Bank Cup. During the 1989-90 season, the first team won the Staffordshire Senior League title and the 1990-91 season saw the club entering the FA Vase for the first time. In 1991-92, the club reached the FA Vase 2nd round having gone through all the preliminary stages but lost at home to Wisbech Town 2-0 in front of a then record crowd of 368. The first team fared well in the league in the mid to late 90’s, finishing 3rd (97-98), 6th (98-99), 2nd (99-00) and 3rd (00-01). Eccleshall reserves won the Staffordshire County League (North) in 1999-2000 moving to the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One (North) for the start of the following season. In the 2001-2002 season, the first team won the Springbank Vending Midland League Championship.

Eccleshall FC In 2002-2003 Eccleshall’s first team joined the North West Counties Football League after securing both the Springbank Vending Midland League title and Staffordshire FA Vase. In probably the most successful season in the club’s history, our second team were also Staffordshire County League champions and our Under 18s won the Sentinel Cup. For good measure, our Under 16s won the Staffordshire FA County Cup, the Mid-Staffordshire League Cup and the Sentinel Shield. Regarding the Sentinel competitions, the last time a club had won both trophies in the same season had been some twenty five years previously – a great achievement. The 2012-13 season marked the completion of 10 years in the North West Counties League and saw the club achieve its highest ever placing of sixth in Division 1. In 2017-18, our Under 17s had a very successful season, winning the Potteries Junior Youth League Cup, Staffordshire FA Youth Cup and finishing runners up in the league. Over the years since 1981-82, significant work has been undertaken to develop both the ground and the facilities to the required standard of the National League Pyramid which the club now enjoys. This includes enclosing the ground, the installation of floodlights, building a covered seated stand and pitch levelling. In 2019, a new toilet block was installed and previously the clubhouse was refurbished and upgraded with the addition of a treatment room and a security system. Prior to the 2018/19 season, a new kitchen and refreshments bar was added. For the 2021-22 season the team dugouts have been replaced and more spectator improvements made. Further developments to the ground are planned for the future. All of this has been achieved by a strong committee management team behind the scenes, a number of which have given many years of service to Eccleshall FC together with the addition of new members who are helping to take the club forward. The club has now added a number of junior teams as we look to develop a junior section. Our second pitch has been upgraded and improved to accommodate this. 2021 sees Eccleshall Football Club celebrate its 50th anniversary and, as can be seen from the above, much has been achieved over that time. We look forward to seeing what the future brings. We consider ourselves a friendly club and look forward to welcoming you to Pershall Park in the future and hope you will enjoy the facilities and the football.

JUNIOR EAGLES Juniors Chairman, Andy Gough, writes:

The junior section at Eccleshall Football Club is going from strength to strength and we now have sides at Under 9s, Under 12s, Under 13s and Under 15s levels, playing in good and challenging leagues. Much work has been put in to developing the junior pitch facilities and, moving forward, we are currently in discussion with Staffordshire FA to explore funding for adding another on the area behind the stand. The future is looking very promising. Up to this point in the 2021/22 season, the results achieved by the teams are very positive and, what is more encouraging, is that they are producing good quality football on both a Saturday and Sunday. It is hoped that, with the pandemic gradually moving behind us, that the season can be completed without any interruptions and that we can finish with some silverware. It goes without saying that this development can only progress further with a lot of hard work and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone within the club for their continued support. The younger goalkeepers have also been benefiting from coaching by first team goalkeeping coach Harry Pickering. Under 15s keeper Conna Boulton and Under 13s keeper Jack Sharratt have taken part in sessions and their parents and team-mates have seen improvements in their game as a result. Conna will be helping Harry to warm up first team keeper Aaron Woolrich before tonight’s match and will gain from being close to senior football and the match day experience. We will be looking for the three other keepers to get involved in these coaching sessions in the future. Reflecting the junior section link with our senior team, the Under 13s North Staffs Junior League side will be forming a guard of honour and clapping both sides onto the pitch tonight. I feel sure they will enjoy being part of the evening against Stoke City.

Welcome to stoke city fc Stoke City's remarkable list of home-grown players through the years is one that the Club is very proud of. From the likes of Sir Stanley Matthews, Freddie Steele and Neil Franklin, the local back four of the 1970s, through to players such as Andy Wilkinson, Ryan Shotton and Tom Edwards, the Potters have always been keen to nurture local talent. City have entered youth teams in competitive games for many years, including the inaugural FA Youth Cup tournament in 1952. After two semi final appearances in 1955 and 1961, the Club reached the final in 1984, whilst also going on to lift the Midland Melville Cup in 1996. Following on from the move to the bet365 Stadium in 1997, the next priority was to improve the standard of facilities for producing stars of the future. A specialised dome was built nearby on Trentham Lakes and the Club were granted Academy status by the FA Premier League in 1999. As a result, teams were entered into specialised Under-19 and Under-17 leagues, with those then becoming the Under-18 and Under-16 divisions following a restructure in 2004. Further changes were announced in 2012 by the Premier League with the implementation of its Elite Player Performance Plan. As part of the EPPP, an additional Under 21s and subsequent Under-23s league were introduced with the aim to bridge the gap between the first team and Academy levels. The Potters were granted Category One status as part of the shake-up following significant investment by the Coates family, thus boosting prospects of achieving sustained success at the highest level in the long term future.

LAST TIME OUT

ATT : 134

EAGLES RUN COMES TO AN END After taking ten points out of twelve, Eccleshall travelled to Manchester in good heart to tackle high-flyers Abbey Hey. With Callum Feeney unavailable and Oliver Hickman injured, Jordan Darlington came in for his debut and Calum Huxley returned to the starting line-up. With a strong swirling wind causing problems, Eccleshall went behind after only five minutes. Sam Marsh conceded a free kick outside the box and the resulting cross was deflected past Eagles keeper Aaron Woolrich by Dylan Fitzgerald. In response, a Harvey Collins free kick was headed goalwards by Liam Robinson, but his effort was easily collected by Abbey keeper Dane Smith. In the early stages of the half, Abbey had the majority of the play with their passing game leaving Eagles doing the chasing. A ball into the box by Matthew Grimshaw was collected by Woolrich as Luke Hincks ran in. With 35 minutes gone, Smith hadn’t been seriously tested. However, Eagles were working their way into the game as first a Huxley free kick was collected by Smith and then Jack Flanaghan received the ball from Luke Lewis and his low drive was parried for a corner by the keeper.

HT: Abbey Hey 1 Eccleshall 0 Soon after the restart, a corner led to Abbey skipper Aaron Fleming heading towards the top corner, only for Darlington to head it off the line. Woolrich went down to collect another effort and Eagles, whilst looking solid defensively, were not causing any real problems in the final third. Liam Kelly brought on Lucas Green-Birch, and he quickly got involved with a run and cross but found touch. A corner by Dylan Norris was headed over by Hincks and then a quick move forward by Lewis for the Eagles came to nothing. Eccleshall then had a real scare on 79 minutes when Woolrich raced out to clear the ball and Jordan Lazenbury got past him and his shot towards goal went along the line and out of play. Ben Chesters was brought on for Lewis before a neat Abbey move down the pitch involving four players led to Jake Dunford firing over. A defensive mistake then led to Lazenbury running clear and Woolrich dived full length across goal to superbly tip the curled placed shot away. Taylor Draper was brought on for Flanaghan in a final roll of the dice to get something from the game and a little bit of niggle crept into the proceedings as the match came to a conclusion.

FT: Abbey Hey 1 Eccleshall 0 In truth, after recent performances, this was not one of Eccleshall’s better ones. However, to put a positive slant on the game, they restricted one of the leading teams in the division to one goal, looked solid defensively and would have probably lost more heavily earlier in the season. They are still outside the bottom three and now face Stoke City in the Staffordshire Senior Cup on Tuesday, before meeting Abbey Hulton United in a local derby in the Potteries next Saturday. Eagles: Woolrich, Darlington, Dunn, Benton, Marsh, Collins, Flanaghan (Draper), Doughty (Green-Birch), Robinson, Huxley, Lewis (Chesters). Unused subs: Lindop, Woodroffe. Referee: Mr Jack Welsh Attendance: 134
