Early Childhood Screening is a free, careful, and important check on how your 3-5 year old child is growing and developing! Screening is structured to include fun games that screen multiple areas of a child’s development including: • • • • • •

Vision, Hearing, and Physical Growth Health and Immunization History Social and Emotional Development Fine and Gross Motor Ability Cognitive Development Speech, Language, and Articulation Do All Children Need Early Childhood Screening? Yes, the State of Minnesota requires Early Childhood Screening for all children between the ages of three and five. The developmental screening components and instruments used in our Early Childhood Screening program are recommended by the Minnesota Department of Health for use in comprehensive screening programs for children in Minnesota and are approved by the Minnesota Department of Education for use in Early Childhood Screening programs.

When Should My Child Be Screened?

Screening is recommended between the ages of three and four. State law requires children to have completed their screening prior to entering kindergarten; however, screening is not a kindergarten entrance test! Screening tasks and developmental expectations are tailored to the age of the child so a three year old is only asked to perform tasks developmentally appropriate for their age. If there are any potential problems in your child’s health and development, earlier identification will allow earlier intervention to benefit your child and allows more time to access services, and early learning opportunities.

When And Where Are Screenings Done? Wayzata Public Schools offers early childhood screenings throughout the school year by appointment at our Wayzata Early Learning School located at 1461 County Road 101 N. in Plymouth. Screenings take approximately one hour. Screenings are family focused and parents will attend the screening with their child; interpreters are available. Invitations to schedule screening appointments are sent to ISD 284 families during a child’s third year of age. If you have a child turning four years or older and have not received an invitation, please contact the screening office at 763-745-5290 to be added to the school district census.

Go online to wayzataecs.appointy.com today to schedule your child’s screening appointment!

EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION (ECFE)

10

What is ECFE? Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is unique to Minnesota. This nationally celebrated model supports the essential role of parents as their birth to 5 year old children’s first and most important teachers. ECFE programs require degreed, licensed early childhood teachers and parent educators. Our ECFE is typical of Wayzata Schools, a model of excellence and among the very best in Minnesota. We have the energy and resources to meet the needs of your family.

Baby Steps: 0 - 12 Months What does your baby need from you? What do YOU need for yourself? Start out on the right foot! Discover new ways to support and enjoy your baby, engage with other moms and dads, and build on your strengths. Playtime and “nesting” with your infant will be followed by parent discussion and the best available information and support from our experienced, licensed parent educators. Your baby will stay with you. Whether this is your first or fifth child, your baby is unique and special, and so is this time in your life.

Busy Ones: 12 - 24 Months Explore the world through your toddler’s eyes, connect with other families, enhance your parenting skills, discover fresh activity ideas, and navigate the joys and challenges of raising a toddler. Wondering about your toddler’s intense emotions, nutrition, sleep, or how to take care of yourself? Group discussion and the best, most reliable information from our professional teachers will increase your joy and confidence as a parent.

Kids on the Go: 24+ Months Enjoy quality focus and play time with your 2 to 5 year old, innovative parenting strategies and support, new friendships for you and your child, and ways to help your child learn and develop to his/her potential. During separation, you and your child will discover the joys of learning and growing with other families, along with the support and guidance from licensed teachers and parent educators. Choose the class with a birth date range that fits your child.

Family Connections Ages 0 - Kindergarten Entrance Families connect with one another to share the joys and concerns about raising a child with unique needs. This supportive program provides a safe, non-threatening atmosphere for sharing and understanding life’s changes and feelings related to raising a child with challenges. Siblings of all ages are welcome to attend with their family. Class E601

Dates ECFE Mondays, September 16, 2019 May 18, 2020

Time 5:00-6:30 p.m.

Cost FREE

Sibling Care This program is available to siblings of children enrolled in an ECFE class. Infant siblings under 4 months of age may stay with their parents in an ECFE class or in Sibling Care. If your baby is over 4 months, you will need to register for Sibling Care or find other child care when they reach that age.

Family Play Time Ages 0 - Kindergarten Entrance Come to Family Play Time at the Wayzata Early Learning School! This session will provide an opportunity for you to bring all of your children ages 0-5 to a safe, open play time at an affordable price. Each weekly session will be held on ECFE Fridays from 11:00-1:00 during the school year and you are able to come at a time on Fridays that work best for you! Bring a sack lunch along for you and your child to have a classroom picnic in school--just remember that we are a Nut Aware facility so be careful on choosing your lunch. Also we ask that only water is brought to drink. The teachers will arrange for different themes for you and your child to enjoy together. A parent educator will be available for you to ask questions and get answers informally. Parents stay with their children during the session. This is a very informal class. There is a $5.00 fee per family for each day attended. Attendance will be taken and you will be billed at the end of each month. Class C555

Parent’s Corner Do you have a parenting question? Drop in to visit a parent educator for suggestions and guidance with your parenting questions! Available times are posted in the school or call the office to schedule an individual time! We also have parent education resource bags on common topics to help answer your questions. The bags can be checked out and taken home to review at your convenience. New topics are added throughout the year. All of these resources are free to all families. Stop by the office if you have any questions!

LENA AND BLOCK TIME

The Wayzata Early Learning School is honored to be the only school district in Minnesota currently offering LENA. LENA is a parent education program based on the belief that all parents have the ability to unlock their children’s social, emotional, and cognitive potential. We focus on increasing interactive talk because it has been proven to be a key factor in early brain development - and we focus on the earliest years because research points to those as the most critical. The feedback we provide helps parents improve talk and conversations with their children. The results are stronger families and children more prepared to succeed in school.

Excellence for the Whole Child Kindergarten Readiness

Wayzata Public Schools

Parent Education and Support

Safety and Health

Your child will grow and achieve academically, emotionally, socially, and physically toward kindergarten readiness.

We are Wayzata Public Schools’ licensed, accredited preschool. We have full access to all of the district’s resources.

If your child is not yet potty trained, we will work with you. All children are welcome here.

Safety is our top priority.

Your preschooler will have fun! Play is the work of children, so our research-based curriculum focuses on learning through play.

We actively partner with Wayzata Early Childhood Special Education in all of our classes. All classes are integrated and some classes are team taught with an ECSE teacher.

2+ classes include a weekly parent/child day with interaction time and an adultonly time for parent education and support. The second day is for children only.

We are a nut-aware facility. Nutritious snacks are provided daily at no charge. The building is a secure facility and uses the same security system as all other district buildings.

PEPPERMINT FENCE

Peppermint Fence begins the week of Tuesday, September 3, 2019, with conferences for you, your child, and the teacher. You’ll meet together in a relaxed setting, allowing your child to explore the new classroom. You will choose a conference day and time in August. Actual preschool classes begin the week of September 9. Parent/teacher conferences are also held in November and March.
