American Girl® Theater!
Grades 1-5
Do you like to act and dance on stage? Do you love the wonderful world of American Girl®? Then this is the class for you! Several American Girl® characters come together in this workshop to illustrate the strength and energy of these amazing young women. Students will learn all about the basics of acting including: stage positions, building a character, voice projection and more. While learning, we’ll be rehearsing an original class presentation featuring the characters of Felicity, Kirsten, Kit, Molly and Julie. Our presentation will include short acting scenes and dance numbers from many different periods in time, and will be enjoyed by family and friends during our final class period. Wish Upon a Ballet Ages 3-6 Wish Upon a Ballet is a dance program for children that incorporates popular children’s stories, as well as ballet stories to create a dance class that is more than ballet steps. Using musical instruments, parachutes and scarves, we will create a complete fairy tale experience while we skip, leap, jump and spin. This way, an introduction to the movements and vocabulary of ballet are taught in a fun and creative manner. Children will learn an appreciation for dance and music while developing strength and flexibility. Parents, family and friends will be invited to observe a special performance at the end of the session. Come join the fun! Boys and girls will need ballet shoes. Girls should wear a leotard and tights. Boys should wear comfortable clothes they can move around in. Babysitter Training Course- Red Cross Certified Ages 11-18 Students must be 11 years or older to take this course. This course is essential for any young person interested in babysitting! Students will learn about child development and handling emergencies, including rescue breathing, choking, first aid, preventing accidents, safety, feeding, diapering and more. Leadership and the responsibilities of the babysitter, as well as the expectations of parents and the business of babysitting are also covered. Participants will receive a Red Cross certificate, a babysitter’s handbook, a CD and a handy emergency guide. Students must attend both classes in their entirety to receive certification. Mindfulness and Me! (parent/child class) Grades K-5 Mindfulness is a scientifically proven process to reduce stress and anxiety while increasing overall concentration, focus, relationships, and well-being. With over 30 years of research, the application of mindfulness-based practices has become a successful influence in medicine, psychology, business environments, and education. In this course, children along with their caregiver (parent/guardian) will learn practical mindfulness-based techniques to use at home, school, and anywhere! Techniques covered include: focus and concentration, calm and confidence, self-awareness, skillful responses, and relationships. Taught by Dr. Debra Lindh, this program is specifically designed for children and their caregiver. Dr. Lindh’s applied research in mindfulness-based practices won the 2013 Best Research Paper Award. She has spoken at several international conferences about her research and consultancy services. Dr. Lindh has taught children and adults mindfulness-based practices to decrease stress and increase overall well-being. Students build vehicles and robots containing a LEGO Robotics Mindstorm Microcomputer which can then be controlled with a remote! Work with specialty Mindstorm LEGO pieces such as an advanced touch, heat and light sensors, fiber-optic cables, caterpillar treads and gear trains. Play robotic tag with classmates, speed through obstacle courses, and disable enemy bots with “laser” signals sent through a fiber-optic cable. How to Control Your Emotions and Have a Good Conversation Grades K-4 Good manners help children build confidence, increase self-respect, improve communication skills, make friends and create a positive impression on others. In this fun and interactive class, students will have the opportunity to learn proper etiquette and good manners, as well as strengthen their ability to interact with others. The curriculum is geared for both boys and girls and will include empathy, teasing/bullying, gossiping, potty mouth, managing anger, polite conversation, think before you speak, how to make good conversation, interrupting, slamming doors and being positive, and a host of other subjects through role-playing exercises, activities and games. ..............SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATH mathWiZ Enrichment Program for Advanced Math Students At the heart of the mathWiZ enrichment program is an extraordinary curriculum carefully crafted to develop your child’s skill of logical reasoning and expand the joy found in your child thinking mathematically. The program provides students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge, which enables them to investigate, analyze, infer, and verify their problem-solving approach. During the sessions, your child will be provided with topic-based instructions which are supplemented with daily homework. In a collaborative environment, teachers inspire and encourage students to think logically and aid them in developing test taking skills. Intense drills and practice for ACT’s NUMATS Explore exam using full length practice tests are incorporated into the course. The program also helps with math competitions like Math Masters, Junior High Math League, MathCounts and AMC 8. Each series of mathWiZ is independent of the others and is not a prerequisite. Fencing for Parents Join your elementary or middle school student! Parents are invited to register and join their children in the elementary or middle school fencing classes. Instead of watching from the sidelines, grab a foil and a mask to get a great workout. Learn an exciting sport and sharpen your reflexes while competing each week. ....................................................... SPORTS & FITNESS Skateboard Camps Provided by 3rd Lair Skatepark Grades 1-8 3rd Lair Skateboard Camps are designed for all ages and abilities. We teach the basics of skateboarding as well as help more advanced individuals take their skating to the next level. Our professional instructors share their love of the sport in a fun and supportive environment designed to foster confidence and build skills. Skateboard Camps run from 9:00am to noon with complimentary open skate after camp until the park closes - a whole day of fun! We provide any equipment and pads you need free of charge. Our camps provide small group instruction based on skill level so everyone feels comfortable, supported and challenged. PLEASE NOTE: Open skate is available after camp, but direct supervision is not provided. Parents should plan to stay with students who stay for open skate time after camp. Discover Racquetball Ages 6-17 Discover how fun and exciting the sport of racquetball can be in this six-week program for youth. The Discover Racquetball curriculum was designed by Hall of Fame coach and legend Steve Strandemo. Steve was ranked top 10 in the world for 10 years and has written three best selling racquetball instructional books. Also, the instructors for this class have a combined 70 years of racquetball experience and are all level I Certified Instructors at Life Time Fitness. Students should wear comfortable gym clothing (e.g. shorts and t-shirt) with sneakers or tennis shoes. Racquets, goggles, and balls will be provided. Check in at the front desk and proceed to racquetball court #1 on the lower level. All players will be grouped with other similarly skilled players - beginners welcome!
