Participation in the WISHES program is a great way to help your child build confidence and selfesteem, explore interests in greater depth and develop new hobbies and recreational interests. There is a handy chart on the inside back cover to help you plan your summer! Please note the location of each class. Transportation is NOT provided. Music Sonic Blast - Rock n’ Roll Music Camp Ages 11-15 Sign up for a PULSE-POUNDING summer of Rock n’ Roll! On tap are the classic tunes of Lynrd Skynrd, Heart and Bon Jovi, as well as the hottest riffs from Fistful of Mercy, White Stripes, Fall Out Boy and more. Our focus is on the creative process of song writing, the collective structure of making music in a band and the professionalism and dedication it takes to put on a Rock Concert. There will be a rock concert the last day of camp. Parents and friends are encouraged to attend! We provide: amplifiers, a drum set and percussion equipment, electric piano, microphones and materials for posters. You provide: Rock n’ Roll attitude and a ton of enthusiasm! 3D Virtual Game World Design

Video Game Design

Grades 5-8 Create and complete your own 3D Game World! Working on Windows laptops, students will learn to use Platinum Arts “Sandbox Game Maker” software. This course is an introduction to techniques used to create 3D gaming environments, including structures, buildings, tunnels, stairs, and outdoor terrains that include hills, mountains, valleys, and lakes. Students will learn to create rotating objects and characters and add visual and audio special effects and experiment with textures. We will explore scripting by looking at simple demos. On the final day, students will use the skills learned, along with their imagination and creativity, to create their own unique 3D Game Environment. Grades 4-8 Do you enjoy playing video games? This course will give you hands-on experience developing your own game. Students working on Windows laptops will design, create, and edit their own 2 dimensional arcade-style video game. Students work through increasingly challenging tutorials and class led projects leading them to finally take what they have learned to create their own games in the last session. You will design the action, create the characters, and edit the objectives and outcomes. Games created in class will be available online or students can bring in a USB drive for immediate access. Google 3D Sketch Up Grades 4-8 If you can dream it, you can build it in 3D! Students will be working on Windows laptops. Model anything you can imagine. Redecorate your room. Invent a new piece of furniture. There’s no limit to what you can create with SketchUp™. Students working in pairs will learn to use Google SketchUp™ to build amazing 3D models such as: mansions and castles, race tracks, cities, skate parks or space ships. Get inside your model or animate it, to give your family & friends a virtual tour. Google SketchUp™ is an intuitive, yet very robust 3D modeling software application that is both educational and a lot of fun to create and experiment with. Advanced Video Game Creation: Super Scratch Programming Grades 5-8 Super Scratch Programming Adventure! Learn to program by making cool games. This class is for older students, or students who have experience with Scratch. In Super Scratch Programming Adventure!, students learn programming fundamentals as they make their very own playable video games. They’ll create projects inspired by classic arcade games that can be programmed (and played!) in each afternoon. Step-by-step explanations of the code and fun programming challenges will have kids creating their own games in no time. This faster paced class will work with programming concepts like flow control, subroutines, and data types. Grades 4-8 Join the epic journey down to Middle-earth. Create a short feature film starring the heroic members of the fellowship of the rings. Lord of the Rings action figures, Legos, backdrops will be available for filming in class. Handle all of the technical details including using a digital movie camera, filming scenes, stop-motion animation, downloading footage to the computer, digital editing and adding finishing special effects and transitions to the movie. In this exciting hands-on learning class, our instructors will take your student through the entire digital film making steps from start to finish using Frames Software. Student groups’ final projects will be emailed to parents, or students may bring a USB jump drive the last day to take home their films immediately. Digital Film Making and Production Grades 4-7 Become the writers, directors, actors, and special effects creators & editors of our own movie production. From storyboarding to filming, you will make all of the creative & technical decisions. You will be able to share your movie with friends and family and hear the applause. Learn shooting and editing techniques. You will be working in teams to create your own story, then write a script and make your idea come alive on film. Be the on-air reporter or producer of a news, weather or sports show! You devise the format, write the script, record video clips and add special effects. We will be using HD Video Cameras, while experiencing every stage of production, including planning scripting, shooting, and editing. Students will be working in teams to create a commercial and a news story. Dance, Theater & Performing Arts Explore Create Express Summer Drama Camp Grades 2-6 Do you enjoy acting, singing and dancing? Are you interested in learning more about how to put together a theater production? If you love performing in addition to painting, drawing, and creative art projects, this camp is for you. Under the direction of Julie Potvin Kirchner, Craig Zimanske and the drama camp staff, summer drama camp is a week-long exploration of different aspects of theatre. The culmination of the camp is a showcase performance of a musical play. No experience is necessary. COME JOIN THE FUN! Students should bring a lunch and a nut-free snack or two each day. General & Miscellaneous Bicycle Repair and Rebuilding Grades 5-8 Students in this class will learn all aspects of repairing and rebuilding bikes including; gears, brakes, wheel truing and re-greasing. Demonstrations will be done on bikes supplied by the instructor. Basic physics will be explained in the demonstration, including simple machines, gears, levers, and mechanical advantage. Students will then work on bikes donated by local police departments. Students will be able to keep the bikes and bring them home after class! Instructor will provide all tools and cleaning materials. Some spare parts will be available for student use. If students wish to buy parts for their bikes, parents can purchase parts on their own or from the instructor at wholesale prices. Students will also receive a hand-written Xeroxed instruction manual. Babysitter Training Course – Red Cross Certified Ages 11-18 This course is essential for any young person interested in babysitting! Students will learn about child development and handling emergencies, including rescue breathing, first aid, preventing accidents, safety, feeding, diapering and more. Leadership, the responsibilities of the babysitter, as well as the expectations of parents and the business of babysitting are also covered. Participants will receive a Red Cross certificate, a babysitter’s handbook, a CD ROM and a handy emergency guide. Please bring a beverage, a nut-free snack and a doll to class each day. Digital Photography Grades 5-8 Have you ever looked at a photo and wondered how the photographer did that? If you enjoy photography and want to learn how to get some of the effects professionals do, then this is the class for you. We will learn some basic techniques for composing photos, how to use lighting to get different effects, and how to use some of the different features your camera has that you might not know about. Dress for the weather as we will spend some time outside taking pictures. This class is aimed more at photography with various kinds of digital cameras, not camera phones. If you have a digital camera, bring it to class (and make sure it has charged batteries and a card in it.) There will also be a few cameras available for any students who don’t have a camera. Organize Your Writing to Make it Stand Out (Email Tutoring) Grades 6-8 It starts with a sentence, then a paragraph, and then an essay. With so many rules to remember about how to organize each one, it’s like trying to put together a 10,000 piece puzzle! If you’ve struggled with organizing an essay before, or just need guidance to make your writing stand out, this class is for you! Through regular emails with the instructor, you will receive specific support with the pieces you need to improve your writing. For this tutoring session, you’ll send two original essays between June 17 and July 26. Essays can be something you’ve written for a school assignment that you’d like to improve, works that you plan to enter into an essay contest, or focused on a topic of interest to you. For each submitted essay, Mrs. Leddy will give you feedback and ideas via email to strengthen the organization of your writing. Then, you’ll resubmit your revised essay for final feedback. Registered students will be contacted via email in early June with information on how to get started. Students must register by May 30th. Math By Mail for Middle School and High School Prep Grades 6-8 It’s here!! Keep young minds active with the locally developed Math-By-Mail curriculum, math practice accompanied by enrichment activities for the upcoming summer months. Created by current middle school math teachers with 40+ years of combined experience! Minnesota State Standards, Math Frameworks MCA strands, and current Minnesota Benchmarks are the foundational basis for this curriculum. With creative problem solving, multiple choice, short answer and vocabulary embedded into an 8 week course of independent study, students will maintain or increase the level of their math understanding in addition to reviewing the recommended targets suggested by grade level in the Minnesota School Academic Standards of mathematics. Each student will be given a pretest in mid-June to assess the appropriate skill level necessary to strengthen their individual math needs, unlike other programs that are exclusively grade level driven. Students will receive 8 packets to complete at their own pace throughout the summer. As students finish packets they are mailed back for feedback and then returned to the students. Science, Robotics, Legos & Engineering Advanced Engineering: Super-Charged Lego Launchers Grades 4-7 Build target launchers, hand-triggered contraptions, wind-up cars, and other incredibly fun inventions in this brand new class. It just may be impossible to exhaust the creative potential of LEGO bricks. With an active imagination as your guide, there are endless possibilities. In this fun, action packed class, we will be building Lego projects that launch safe projectiles into action! Students working in pairs will learn about physics and engineering concepts such as Velocity, Projectiles, Trajectories, Force, Motion and more . Gateway Academy Engineering Summer Camp Grades 6-8 This summertime camp experience prepares students for the rigors of high school science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) classes. The critical thinking, creative problem-solving and collaboration skills that campers learn at Gateway Academy will benefit them for a lifetime. This camp uses the Project Lead the Way project-based, hands on and real–world problem–solving approach to STEM learning that’s designed to nurture kids’ imaginations, inspire creativity and develop self-confidence. Summer will be here sooner than you think. NXT Robotics: Battlebots Grades 4-7 Super-Charged NXT LEGO Robotics Projects! Get ready to take ultimate control! Using the NXT Intelligent brick from LEGO速, servo motors, advanced ultrasonic, touch and light sensors, and specialized lego technic engineering components, students will build extreme robots, program them to accomplish tasks, respond to external stimuli, and overcome challenges. Students working in small teams will control the robot with the NXT programs, and then have the opportunity to experiment and modify the programs. Students will then be challenged to morph their projects into better, stronger or faster robots. Engineering: Solar, Hydro and Wind Power

Grades 3-7 Test your robotic mettle, grit, determination and teamwork against robo-masterminds in your community. Each day students team up, build, test, modify and program different robots to complete unique tasks and challenges. Students use these robots to study basic robotic engineering concepts then get ready to throw-down against other teams in their class. Challenges include: Drag Race, Ping Pong Toss, Grand Prix and more. We keep it fun, inclusive and insure an action-packed week of robotics. Get your inner innovator pumping this summer! We will be using Mindstorms: NXT programming and assemblies. $169 for 5 classes; Youth Enrichment League

Grades 5-8 Combine engineering and alternative energy (solar, hydro & wind)! Build cars, cranes, drawbridges, etc. from LEGO速 kits and operate them using alternative energy sources. Students working in teams will start with electricity and use a multimeter to measure continuity, resistance, and voltage. Adding concrete experiments with wind, water, and solar panels produces a highpowered and high-energy course! Building projects include: waterwheel, windmill, ferris wheel, and solar car. Students achieve an understanding of how energy is developed from the sun, wind, and water. Solar energy can be captured by the LEGO速 Solar Cell and used to power their models. Sports & Fitness Skateboard Camps Provided By 3rd Lair Skate Park Ages 5-15 3rd Lair Skateboard Camps are designed for all ages and abilities. We teach the basics of skateboarding as well as help more advanced individuals take their skating to the next level. Our professional instructors share their love of the sport in a fun and supportive environment designed to foster confidence and build skills. Skateboard Camps run from 9 am to noon with complimentary open skate after camp until the park closes - a whole day of fun! Parents should plan to stay and supervise students who stay for open skate. We provide any equipment and pads you need free of charge. Our camps provide small group instruction based on skill level so everyone feels comfortable, supported and challenged. BMX & Scooter Camps Provided by 3rd Lair Skate Park Ages 5-15 For the first time ever, 3rd Lair is offering instructional camps for BMX bikers and scooters. Our expert BMX bike and scooter instructors share their experience to help you learn and progress. Camp will be divided into BMX groups and scooter groups so you need to choose either bike or scooter instruction when registering. Bring your own equipment and come ready for a great experience! These camps will be held from 9 am to noon, at the Hopkins Overpass Skate Park - 100 Washington Avenue South, Hopkins. Students will have to provide their own equipment for this camp. WISHES Registration Information It’s easy to register for WISHES classes online 24/7. Using your Visa /MasterCard/Discover, you can register immediately online at: www.ceregistration.wayzata.k12.mn.us Please note: Parents must register the child that is taking the class (child’s name must show on the roster). Please do not register yourself. Make sure to note at which school the class is being held.

WISHES registrations may not be sent or dropped off at your child’s school or Home Base site. They are not permitted to accept them. Mail: Fill out the registration form and mail it with your check (payable to ISD 284) to: WISHES Wayzata Community Education 305 Vicksburg Lane N. Plymouth, MN 55447 Call Diane at 763-745-5213, if you need assistance.

Register as soon as possible; certain classes fill up very quickly. Online registration will have priority. Mailed or dropped off (at Community Education) registrations will be processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Be sure to note at which school the class is being held. * If your child is in Home Base, it is the responsibility of the parent to notify them that your child will be attending a WISHES Youth Enrichment class. Confirmations/Waitlist You will receive an email confirmation ONLY if you provide an email address when you register online. Otherwise, assume you are in the class unless you hear from us. If you waitlist your child, you will be called ONLY if a spot becomes available. Cancellations • You will receive a full refund, if you cancel 3 business days (M-F) before the class starts. • NO Refunds will be issued the day of the class or after the class starts. • We reserve the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. • Inclement Weather: If school is canceled or dismissed early due to severe weather, WISHES classes will be canceled. By registering your child for a Community Education WISHES class, you are giving us permission to use your child’s photograph/video in future publications such as Community Education WISHES flyers, print publication, brochures, and web pages.
