elcome to the summer 2012 WISHES Youth Enrichment catalog. The WISHES program offers a variety of summer enrichment camps for students in grades K-8. Participation in the WISHES program is a great way to help your child build confidence and self-esteem, explore interests in greater depth and develop new hobbies and recreational interests. There is a handy chart on the inside back cover to help you plan your summer! Please note the location of each class. Classes will be held at Gleason Lake Elementary 310 County Rd 101 N and Central Middle School – 305 Vicksburg Lane, Plymouth MN. Transportation is NOT provided. 3-D Builders Grades K-5 Do you love to build and construct? Then join KidzArt as we ascend to new heights! In this sculpture class. You will build up, over, and beyond. New, found, and repurposed materials will be used to create free-standing sculptures, mobiles, and wall assemblages. Balance, depth, and height will be tackled as you create new worlds and investigate methods of construction. You will also learn about artists such as Louise Nevelson and Alexander Calder. Monster Mash Ages 4-6 Get your creativity ready and join KidzArt for a monster fun time in this camp that includes both 2 and 3-D projects. Draw a friendly sea monster and create a monster mask. Amazing Race Art Camp Grades K-5 ‘Round and ‘round we go, where or when we stop, who knows?! Grab your friends and join KidzArt for a race across the continents and time to explore different countries and cultures. At each pit stop, you will compete in challenges based on clues you will receive each day and then create unique pieces of art as a souvenir. You will experiment with watercolors, pastels, collage, painting on canvas, clay sculpture, drawing and more! Join us for this fun and educational adventure as we explore creating a variety of amazing paintings without even picking up a traditional paintbrush! Using your avid imagination, you will create your very own paintbrushes using a variety of nature’s finest supplies. Brainstorm some cool ideas and then enjoy experimenting with your newly discovered paintbrushes, while using a wide variety of different types of paints to create your masterpieces! Crazy Copper Creations Grades K-5 Join us as we explore the world of copper art! Choose from a variety of patterns, or design your own – the sky is the limit! You will enjoy working with this brilliant metal creating an array of unique projects. Using a special stylus, you will have an opportunity to learn embossing and de-bossing techniques. Complete your works of art by adding special metal embellishments, metallic wire, permanent inks, colorful beads, and much more! Your works of art will go home with you the same day. Learn to Draw Camp Grades K-4 Anyone can learn to be a confident artist in Abrakadoodle’s innovative drawing program, where using a step by step method, students learn how to draw animals, people, and landscapes using easily recognizable shapes. After the initial instruction, students will make the art their own through additional drawing techniques or by adding tempera paint, oil pastels, markers or watercolors. My American Doll’s Summer Camp Grades K-4 All new lessons! Back by popular demand with new projects for 2012. Bring your favorite doll to summer camp! Each day we’ll have a new theme for you and your doll. Over the course of the week we’ll throw a slumber party, take our dolls on a vacation around the world, enjoy a fancy tea party, and end with a back to school day. Each day we will make doll sized art projects to go with the day’s theme from painting wooden luggage to creating a fleece sleeping bag, sculpting tea cups, making doll passports, decoupage a tea tray and more. Build Lego cities then sculpt planes, cars and trains out of clay to decorate your city. Crafty Cakes Art Camp Grades K-5 Move over Buddy and Duff, we’re making cakes Kidcreate style! Superhero Sculptures – All New for 2012 Grades 1-4 Boppo! Batman, The Invisible Woman, Mario, Princess Peach and even the Power Puff Girls are waiting for creative artisans to sculpt and prep them for action. Students will learn about different types of sculpture techniques while constructing popular superheroes of their choosing. Students will also design a cape, t-shirt, and a mask. Students will discover what art and superheroes have in common by exploring the work of American artist Roy Lichtenstein and the Pop Art movement and comic art. All artwork and projects go home with the kids the last day of class. PARENTS: There will be an art exposition the last day of class. The teacher will send a note home the first day of class. Project Runway Grades 2-5 Get ready for your very own PROJECT RUNWAY FASHION SHOW exhibiting projects, designs and crafts made with your own hands, style and flair! Students will make and take home multiple projects: an apron, satchel, doll clothes and more. Students will also learn sewing basics like cross-stitching, straight-stitching, using a sewing machine and sewing by hand. We’ll also learn how to sew buttons, patch a tear and follow basic designs. Our machines are designed for young-learners with built-in safety mechanisms. The FASHION SHOW will take place the last 30 minutes of the final day of camp. Computer & Technology Star Wars Jedi Movie Making Grades K-4 From a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars comes to life! Work on a stop motion animated Lego Star Wars Movie. Pick your characters to star in your own mini-movie ...the possibilities are endless. Star Wars action figures, Legos, backdrops will be available for filming in class. Handle all of the technical details including using a digital movie camera, filming scenes, stop-motion animation, downloading footage to the computer, digital editing and adding finishing special effects and transitions to the movie. In this exciting hands-on learning class, our instructors will take your student through the entire digital film making steps from start to finish using Frames Software. Student groups’ final projects will be available online for all to see, or students may bring a USB jump drive the last day to take home their films immediately. Video Game Creation – Interactive Games Grades K-4 Dive into the world of 2 dimensional video game designs. Working in pairs, students will create a dynamic video animation game using Scratch, the innovative programming language created just for students by the MIT Media Lab. The first part of each class will be instructor led, with the time remaining students will have the opportunity to solve challenges or develop their own game animation. Games will be available online or students can bring in a USB drive on the last day. Students will also be able to download the software at home. 3D Game Programming Grades 2-5 All New! DESIGN, DISCOVER, DREAM-UP! Using Alice, an innovative 3D programming software, students will design an animation for an interactive game, movie or story. This object-oriented program is fun and challenging, as students discover the art of video game programming using 3D graphics in a virtual world. Students working in pairs will learn the basics of making objects, people, animals and vehicles that move and react in a virtual 3D World. Dance, Theater & Performing Arts Favorite Artist Dance Party Grades 1-5 Join us for Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson dance party! We will explore all styles of dance to all of our favorite songs! Kids will learn dance moves that focus on coordination, memorization and stage presence. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle to class each day. Summer Math by Mail Grades K-1 K-One Math by Mail has been developed to review and enrich math concepts for kindergarten and first graders. The curriculum is designed exclusively for students just completing kindergarten or students just completing first grade. Participants will receive ten weeks of lessons by mail. After they have completed a week’s work, mail it in and we’ll make corrections, provide comments and mail it back. Students can work at their own pace. Summer Math by Mail Grades 2-5 Enrich your math skills! This 10-week correspondence program was developed by a veteran teacher. Materials that students will cover during the summer review and support concepts they have encountered during their previous school year. Students will take a pre-test and fill out a questionnaire to individualize their program. Students will then receive nine weeks of materials. Each week’s packet will include five, 20 minute math lessons with problemsolving activities. The activities will apply to a specific math concept or strand. After the student has completed the five-lesson concept, they will mail it in. We’ll make corrections, provide feedback and mail it back. Recreation Horseback Riding Camps with Grand Equestrian Grades K-8 Enjoy the excitement of horseback riding camp! Come ride and learn about horses! Lessons include learning how to work with the horse and learn balance and control in the saddle. In addition, campers get to learn how to groom, tack-up, lead, and do in-hand work with horses. Sports & Fitness Summer Track Event Grades K-6 The Wayzata High School Track and Field Coaches are offering track meet events for boys and girls in Grades K-6. Students will be divided by age group, with the youngest age groups starting first. Ribbons will be awarded to the first six placers. Participants need to bring running shoes and a water bottle. All participants registered by JUNE 1st will receive a track t-shirt on the first day of the meet. Events will be coordinated by WHS Track and Field Coaches, Assistant Coaches and volunteer high school track students. Parents are expected to stay for the entire event to supervise their children.
