elcome to the summer 2012 Middle School Youth Enrichment catalog. We are excited to offer a wide variety of enrichment classes to our middle school students this summer. Participation in the WISHES program is a great way to help your child build confidence and self-esteem, explore interests in greater depth and develop new hobbies and recreational interests. There is a handy chart on the inside back cover to help you plan your summer! Please note the location of each class. Middle School classes will be held at Central Middle School – 305 Vicksburg Lane, Plymouth MN 55447. Transportation is NOT provided. The registration forms and information are on the back pages. Anime/Manga Drawing Grades 5-8 Are you interested in the genre of manga / anime comics? In this workshop teens will work with a local comic artist on developing and refining their anime drawing skills. Teens will look at various manga and anime drawing styles and then practice character and concept development, composition, drawing, inking and coloring your choice of these styles. No previous drawing experience necessary. A Class From Trash – Outdoor Sculpture Art

Redesign Your Clothing – Fashion with a Passion

Grades 5-8 Art and science meet as we create weather resistant sculptures to be displayed outside. Students will work their creations from drawings. They will assess how to construct the project in a group share and then start building! We will be using hammer, nails, wire, and paint along with postconsumer plastics. Each student will create 1-3 projects to keep. Please bring a nut-free snack.

Grades 4-8 Bring your old jeans, t-shirts and the jewelry you are not wearing and we will learn how to modify and make-over your wardrobe. We will also learn how to make a loom, hand sewing, and knitting. We’ll talk about how fabrics are made and make our own fashion sketch book! Last day, it’s fashion show time! Meet the Masters Grades 5-8 Draw, Paint, and Create like a Famous Artist. Whether you have taken a TeenzArt class before or are just beginning, you will create unique works of art that express your distinctive personality! Travel back in time to explore some of the world’s greatest pieces of art and architecture by artists like Van Gogh and Hokusai as well as more recent works of art. You will have fun cartooning, creating yummy looking models of cake and candy from clay, and painting on canvas. You will learn the techniques used by classical and modern artists and create original works of art using artist grade materials such as Prismacolor makers, Acrylic Paint, Watercolors, and charcoal. Computer & Technology 3D Game Programming

Clay Animation

Grades 5-8 All New! DESIGN, DISCOVER, DREAM-UP! Using Alice, an innovative 3D programming software, students will design an animation for an interactive game, movie or story. This object-oriented program is fun and challenging, as students discover the art of video game programming using 3D graphics in a virtual world. Students working in pairs will learn the basics of making objects, people, animals and vehicles that move and react in a virtual 3D World. Let your imagination soar…if you can dream-up a concept, you can design it! Games created in class will be available online, or bring an USB Drive on the last day of class. Software is available to download at home.

Grades 5-8 Clay and digital animation; what a perfect combination! Working in teams, students do it all - from story creation to making the characters and sets. Students will create their own clay characters and props. As they learn the production process, they will animate, record, download, assemble and edit their own movie. Students will become cinematographers as they create their own unique productions. Using the same tools used by today’s animators, this course will spark their imaginations and then give them the tools to bring their ideas to life. Fun, learning and excitement go hand-in-hand in this special class. Student groups’ final movies will be available online for all to see, or students may bring a USB jump drive the last day to take home their films immediately. Dance, Theater & Performing Arts Explore, Create Express Summer Drama Camp Grades 2-8 Explore, Create Express Do you enjoy acting, singing and dancing? Summer Drama Camp Presents: Are you interested in learning more about how to put together a full staged theater production? If you love performing in addition to painting, drawing, and creative art projects, this camp is for you. SUMMER DRAMA CAMP IS BACK with an extended day schedule and two additional days of creativity! Under the direction of Julie PotvinKirchner, Craig Zamanske and the drama camp staff, summer drama camp is seven days of exploration of different aspects of theatre. The culmination of the camp is a showcase performance of a musical play. No experience necessary. Students should bring a beverage, nut-free lunch and a nut-free snack or two each day. All supplies are included and participants will receive a camp Tshirt. Young Performers Theater Camp – The Bullies at Sam’s Café Ages 6-12 The Bullies at Sam’s Café by Stuart Ardern is a short one-act play for children with songs. A bully with a gang disturbs the staff and customers at Sam’s Café, but when the bullies get into trouble, should Sam and his friends help them? Children will rehearse the play with two Young Performers directors, and will also spend part of each day working on an acting monolog which each child will perform along with the play on the last day of class (at approximately 2:30). General & Miscellaneous Online Class!

Pieces to a Puzzle – Organizing Your Writing to Make it Stand Out! Grades 6-8 It starts with a sentence, then a paragraph, and then an essay. With so many rules to remember about how to organize writing, it’s like trying to put together a 10,000-piece puzzle! If you’ve struggled with organizing your writing before, or just need the guidance to help make your writing stand out, this class is for you! You’ll get specific one-on-one support with the pieces you need to improve your writing. For class, you’ll upload three different, original written works between June 18 and July 30. What you turn in is up to you! It can be a paragraph, an essay, short story, poem, etc. Each work needs to be typed and uploaded to Moodle within the timeframe; for each written work, Mrs. Leddy will give you feedback and specific pointers and ideas to strengthen your writing. Then, you’ll resubmit your revised writing again for final feedback from Mrs. Leddy. Babysitter Training Course Red Cross Certified Ages 11-18 This course is essential for any young person interested in babysitting! Students will learn about child development and handling emergencies, including rescue breathing, first aid, preventing accidents, safety, feeding, diapering and more. Leadership, the responsibilities of the babysitter, as well as the expectations of parents and the business of babysitting are also covered. Participants will receive a Red Cross certificate, a babysitter’s handbook, a CD ROM and a handy emergency guide. Please bring a beverage, a nut-free snack and a doll to class each day. Bicycle Repair and Rebuilding Grades 6-8 Students in this class will learn all basic aspects of maintaining, repairing and rebuilding bicycles; including gears, brakes, wheel truing and re-greasing. Demonstrations will be done on bikes supplied by the instructor. Students will then work on their own bikes or re-do assembly or repair on the demonstration bike. Basic physics will be explained in the demonstrations, including simple machines, gears, levers and mechanical advantage. Students will take home two bike tools and an instruction manual. Digital Photography Grades 5-8 Do you enjoy taking pictures and want to learn some techniques to help you get the best pictures you can? Join Ms. Kvittum to learn about digital photography! We will learn some basic techniques for composing photos, how to use lighting to get different effects, and how to use some of the different features your camera has that you might not know about. Dress for the weather as we will spend some time outside taking pictures. If you have a digital camera bring it to class (and make sure it has charged batteries and a camera card in it.) There will also be a few cameras available for any students who don’t have a camera to share. Come learn how to take pictures that capture the world the way you see it.

Fish Camp Grades 2-7 Join Professional Angler Dan Jasper at Fish Camp! Where kids learn how to cast, tie fishing knots, rig lines and more. At Fish Camp each student receives their own rod, reel and tackle box full of gear, and learns in a fun, interactive setting. On day two, kids meet at the dock with their new fishing gear and get hands on instructions as they fish from the pier. Math By Mail for Middle School and High School Prep Grades 6-8 Keep young minds active by engaging in a summer mathematical program. The materials students will cover during the summer program support and review concepts encountered the previous year. This 9 week program includes a pretest/ questionnaire to individualize their experience. Packets include up to three concepts, vocabulary, and/or problem solving skills. Skills and concepts covered within this program are aligned with the Minnesota Math State Standards. Completed packets should be mailed to the instructors for feedback and correction, and then will be returned to students. Cooking Boot Camps Cooking Boot Camp classes meet from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $65 for 1 class. They are taught by Anu Seshadri of Exotic Palates. Classes are held at Central Middle School, Room A306 FCS.

Tantalizing Tapas

Grades 3-7 Chinese cuisine has gained international acclaim for its bold and vibrant flavors!! Now, you can bring home, as a young chef, the flavors of China to the delight of your family and friends!!! In this class, Chef Anu, from Exotic Palates will guide you through creating an exciting menu from your favorite Chinese restaurant! You will learn to work with traditional ingredients to make a range of richly flavored Chinese classics. There will be an informative session at the end of the class which will pertain to the Cuisine and Culture of China!!!

Grades 3-7 Tapas are tiny dishes, appetizers with big flavors, served on small plates. They are designed to be shared and are great for entertaining! In this class, Chef Anu will show your kids how easy it is to prepare an assortment of little bites with big Mediterranean flavors. This menu full of delicious dishes will be perfect for family meals, birthdays, graduation parties and anytime a group of food-loving friends gather.

Recreation Grand Masters of Chess Summer Camp New Middle School Program! Grades 5-8 Our chess summer camp works with all levels of students. Beginners learn piece movement, capturing, check, checkmate, castling and more; returning students study intermediate lessons (King Rook Checkmate and Gaining Opposition as examples); advanced students will study Queen Sacrifices, Back Rank Mates and other advanced theory. We will hold an in-class tournament the last day of class. Our summer camps are fun, fast-paced and packed with information. Develop the brain bending strategies of a brilliant and complex game! Horseback Riding Camps with Grand Equestrian Grades K-8 Enjoy the excitement of horseback riding camp! Come ride and learn about horses! Lessons include learning how to work with the horse and learn balance and control in the saddle. In addition, campers get to learn how to groom, tackup, lead, and do in-hand work with horses. There are also horse crafts and other horse related activities such as horseshoe painting, braiding a horse’s mane and tail, giving horses baths, horse tag, and helping feed, water, and care for horses. Campers get to build friendships with fellow horse loving peers in a structured and positive environment. Science, Robotics, Legos & Engineering Advanced Engineering: Animatronics & Pneumatics Grades 5-8 Join us as we explore, investigate & solve problems. This exciting hands-on engineering class combines LEGO® Education & LEGO® Technic™ materials to explore design technology, science, and mathematics. Students will be building learning models, then challenged to customize and improved their projects with what they have learned. We will investigate the principles of design, mechanisms, pneumatics, pressure, prototyping, energy and much more. Earthquake and Structural Engineering Grades 5-8 Explore the principles of Earthquake & Structural Engineering in this fun and exciting seismic class. Use an electronic earthquake simulator (shake table) to investigate and learn about the effects of earthquakes on steel and concrete buildings. Student will design and build towers and structures from Knexs, Legos and wood, and see the amazing effects of vibrations and movement have on their structures, and then test their structures to destruction. We also work with the Knex bridge building systems. Then test the bridges to their breaking point, using our bridge tester. Students will be challenged to build the tallest, longest, strongest and most interesting structures they can imagine.

NXT Robot Olympic Pentathlon Grades 3-7 Test your robotic mettle, grit, determination and teamwork against robo-masterminds in your community. Each day students team up, build, test, modify and program different robots to complete unique tasks and challenges. Students use these robots to study basic robotic engineering concepts then get ready to throw-down against other teams in their class. Challenges include: Drag Race, Ping Pong Toss, Grand Prix and more. We keep it fun, inclusive and insure an action-packed week of robotics. Get your inner innovator pumping this summer! Forensic Science Grades 6-8 Want to solve crimes using science? Students will actively participate in forensic labs to solve a mock crime. Students will participate in crime scene mapping, evidence collection, fingerprint lifting, hair and fiber analysis, splatter investigations, and ink chromatography just to name a few. Gateway Academy Engineering Camp Grades 6-8 This camp experience prepares students for the rigors of high school science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) classes. The critical thinking, creative problem-solving and collaboration skills that campers learn at Gateway Academy will benefit them for a lifetime. This camp uses the Project Lead the Way projectbased, hands on and real–world problem– solving approach to STEM learning that’s designed to nurture kids’ imaginations, inspire creativity and develop self-confidence. Sports & Fitness Summer Track Event Grades K-6 The Wayzata High School Track and Field Coaches are offering track meet events for boys and girls in Grades K-6. Students will be divided by age group, with the youngest age groups starting first. Ribbons will be awarded to the first six placers. Participants need to bring running shoes and a water bottle. All participants registered by JUNE 1st will receive a track t-shirt on the first day of the meet. Events will be coordinated by WHS Track and Field Coaches, Assistant Coaches and volunteer high school track students. Parents are expected to stay for the entire event to supervise their children. For information on weather cancellations visit www.wayzatatrack.org. We are unable to offer a rain date. Refunds cannot be given for cancelled classes due to weather.
