ayzata Public Schools Community Education is proud to present the Spring 2012 session of WISHES Youth Enrichment. The WISHES Youth Enrichment program provides elementary students with fun after school enrichment opportunities that are designed to enhance your child’s educational experience, as well as stimulate new interests in hobbies and recreational activities. Please note the location of each class. WISHES classes will meet at multiple locations. Students may attend classes in any building. Transportation is NOT provided. When registering for a class please note the time to be sure it does not interfere with your child’s school day. Flip this catalog over to see a complete listing of our winter classes. Arts & Crafts Deep Sea Adventure Drawing Class – NEW Evening Class! Grades K-5 KidzArt is exploring the vast world under the ocean! We will create a colorful collage of a seahorse using tissue paper, create a world of ocean life swimming through a coral reef using water-color crayons, and draw a scuba diver discovering a treasure chest and use gems for embellishment. General & Miscellaneous Babysitting Red Cross Certified MUST BE 11 YEARS OLD OR OLDER This course is essential for any young person interested in babysitting! Students will learn about child development and handling emergencies, including rescue breathing, first aid, preventing accidents, safety, feeding, diapering and more. Leadership and the responsibilities of the babysitter, as well as the expectations of parents and the business of babysitting are also covered. Participants will receive a Red Cross certificate. Students must attend both classes in their entirety to receive certification. Students should bring a doll to class along with a nut-free lunch, snack and beverage. $95 for two classes; Carol Solheid
South Indian Cooking – Parent/Child Class Grades K - 5 Introduce your kids to the fun and joy of Indian cooking through the classes offered by Exotic Palates!! Whether your child is a keen cook or never touched a saucepan before, they will be inspired by this class! Children and parents are given recipes and guided with hands-on cooking and demos from start to finish. We will explore the unique flavors of South Indian cooking, including Rasam, Adai, Chettinaad Chicken Curry and more. Grandmasters of ChessSpring Blitz w/Igor Rybakov! Kindergarten - 5th Grade – All Levels Welcome! Get ready for your school’s year-end, in-school tournament with Coach IGOR RYBAKOV. Igor is the 2010 Minnesota Chess Coach of the year! He has coached a National Champion, the Team State Champion (and State 3rd place), the individual State Champion, and more place winners than can be counted here. Volleyball Grade 4-5 Volleyball is a fun, recreational activity that can be played in the backyard, on the beach, or in the gym. “Serve” up some fun by joining other 4th and 5th grade students as they hone their volleyball skills after school. The activities are “set” to coincide with the volleyball unit held in physical education classes, so you can really show off your talents. Students will spend a short time at the beginning of class practicing the basic skills of bumping, setting, spiking and serving. The majority of the time will be playing games against other teams in the class. Have fun “bumping” people out of contention for the honor of being the reigning champions. Kung Fu Classes Great Parent – Child Fitness! Kung Fu is more than just kicking, punching, and self-defense. Join us and learn awareness of self and surroundings while improving self-esteem, confidence and, yes, becoming more physically fit. Learn the lifelong benefits of this ancient Chinese art. Parents: Don’t just sit on the sideline. Register and participate with your child in class. Instruction is supervised but may not be delivered by Al Lam. Al Lam has studied Kung Fu since age 8 and is a certified instructor with over 35 years of experience, and he continues to train in China. LEGO X Olympic Challenge Grades 1-5 A new challenge every class and new prizes! Each day students will be given a new, open-ended challenge (no building schematics, only written guidelines). The challenges are based on previous Youth Enrichment League LEGO classes. Challenges may include: a catapult, a hand cart, a winch and more. Students will work in pairs to solve each challenge and present a final project to the instructor. Lego Machines: Pulleys Grades 1 - 5 Build a motorized crane, a conveyor belt, a garage door and many more projects! Students will build, test, modify and investigate a different project each week. Mad Science – Crazy Chemworks Grades 1 - 5 Start your chemistry career off right with Crazy Chemworks. We’ll explore the chemistry of everyday life through spectacular hands-on activities with real lab equipment. Together, we’ll learn how to work in a lab, operate different lab equipment, tell the difference between acids and bases, and identify chemical reactions. We’ll also explore the microworld of molecular chemistry when we learn about the three states of matter.
