Founded at a time when zoos and aquariums were looking so much different from today, our organization has been developed into an acknowledged stakeholder of the community! Our work, our goals and the corresponding mission and vision have been transformed and improved over the decades as did the zoological gardens themselves.
Zoos in many aspects mirror the changes of society and are an integrated part of it. They are a window into wild nature for visitors of all ages and as such more urgently needed than ever before! Today WAZA aims to be the unifying voice of zoos and aquariums around the world – a great vision but a huge challenge as well. Together we can accomplish being a well recognized ambassador for wildlife and its conservation!
I wish you a very successful and satisfying year 2012! Jörg Junhold WAZA President © Zoo Leipzig
It is with great pleasure and pride that we celebrate the 77th anniversary of WAZA in 2012!

The project to re-establish a migratory population of the Northern bald ibis was the first WAZA-branded project, dating back to 2003. Goja, a bird reared in 2009 in Burghausen, Germany, was guided to the wintering area in Tuscany by its foster parent, an ultralight plane, and was the first ibis to return to the breeding sites in July 2011.
