Annual Report

2012

Editorial The 2012 Annual Report of WAZA summarizes the most important facts and figures. Apart from the many activities in WAZA’s anniversary year it also contains the encouraging financial report. This situation enables WAZA to invest in the global efforts on biodiversity, known as the UN Decade on Biodiversity as well as in development of global population management and the global animal welfare strategy. A comprehensive report is published annually as the proceedings of the Annual Conference, accessible for all members on the WAZA website. The 67th Annual Conference took place in Melbourne, Australia, 7–11 October 2012. Gerald Dick, WAZA executive director

An addition to this commemorative volume a desk calendar was published, reminding of important events of the association each month. Jonathan Woodward, a British artist donated a lovely animal painting at the occasion of the anniversary.

Communication & Marketing The WAZA website continued to have an increasing number of visitors and visits. Job postings, monthly news stories, monthly changing homepage photos, most parts now available in three languages and the updated star of the web – the virtual zoo – served members and a broader public even better. WAZA started to be present on facebook and had already 1200 likes by the end of 2012. WAZA was represented at meetings with Jane Goodall and HRH Prince Charles, resulting in testimonials about the importance of the work of zoos and aquariums.
