A DASH OF MAGIC
Christmas brightens up the darkest days of the year. The festive season is all about creating a sense of security, being together, love…. and a dash of magic. A garden centre can create an absolutely unique atmosphere, making every visit an experience. In this edition, we’re skipping the Javado collections and the trend theme for once, so we can focus entirely on our Christmas special. Are you familiar with the Flowertrials®? The magazine includes our report on this annual event. Read how the plant sector’s breeding ground opens its doors to the public once a year. It’s an unmissable experience. In addition, three growers with which Javado works closely who opened their doors for a visit and a friendly chat. This fourth issue of the Javado Magazine crowns our first year. I do hope you have been finding the magazine informative, inspiring and fun to read; we’re very pleased with the results in any case. You will continue to receive our magazine next year, as we still have so much to share about our plant sector. Gerson Aalbrecht Marketing Manager

About Javado
Up to date Study trips with Javado We organise trips for our customers during various trade fairs in the Netherlands. Together, we search out interesting new products and display concepts at the trade fair and growers. This helps us learn from each other, and we’ve noticed that cooperating more intensively in this way leads to better results. The next trade fair in the Netherlands is Trade Fair Aalsmeer, Royal FloraHolland’s biggest trade fair. If you’re interested in joining us on our study visits on 6 and 7 November, please contact your account manager.
Plant passport From 14 December 2019, when the new EU plant health regulation enters into force, each lot of plants has to be accompanied by a plant passport. It allows the EU to better protect itself against the introduction of harmful organisms, and able to take measures faster if there is an outbreak. Only one plant passport per lot is required, but we think that in practice it will often be the case that every plant is provided with one. The plant passport must be visible. It can, for example, be placed on the pot, the label or the cover.
The plant passport contains the following information:
A = botanical name B = the country code of the grower + the grower registration number C = the traceability code D = country code of the country of origin

Flowertrials : essential for every garden centre buyer ®
The Flowertrials® event is organised every year in early June, when plant breeders from around the globe show what they have to offer. The event is visited by growers, traders and buyers in green retail. They describe it as inspiring, colourful, and even ‘essential'. Visit Flowertrials® for yourself, and discover that this report only covers the tip of the iceberg. Agapanthus Summer LoveTM Large

Influencers of our industry Garden centres are known for offering a huge variety of plants. Growers are responsible for producing plants that are as beautiful and pure as possible, but in many cases it all starts with the breeder: that is where the cultivars are endlessly developed and tested, until they’re ready to be offered to growers as cuttings or seeds. Breeders might be at the very beginning of our supply chain, but they must never lose sight of the end customers. That’s because breeders can decide what colours and characteristics they want to influence, and this has to accurately reflect consumer taste. Begonia Morning Dew

Report: Plantarium Plantarium is the prime international trade fair for garden plants, where around 300 exhibitors from different countries present a huge range of tree nursery products for the consumer market. Plantarium was held from 21 to 23 August. Below are some of the highlights we’ve picked out for you. The white version of the well-known Primula vialii. The white flowers appear in June, and bloom at a height of 30 to 40 cm until September. Grows well in both normal and humid spots.
Berries & Cream features two-tone flowers in cream and purple. The abundant flowers last from June to October. Reaches approx. 2 m in height and 70 cm in width. Ideal for borders or terraces. Buddleja dav. 'Berries & Cream'
Clematis 'Bellissima'
Erysimum 'Sunstrong Orange'
Very abundant flowering from May to September. The first flowers in spring are double-flowered, the summer flowers are single-flowered. The light-violet flowers reach a size of 8 to 12 cm. Sunstrong Orange produces large, orange flowers with wonderful scents during the summer. This perennial grows vertically, remaining compact but with average growth. Large umbels with pink flowers, flowering between July and September. The leaves are healthy green with a bronze hue. Compact growth with strong branches. Reaches approx. 90 cm in height and 80 cm in width.
Primula vialii 'Aliholl'
Sedum tak. 'Atlantis'
Skimmia jap. 'Perosa'
Hydrangea arb. 'Candybell Bubblegum'
Hibiscus x 'Fujin®'
Hydrangea pan. 'Frenne'
Weigelia fl. 'All summer Monet'
The flower panicles are much larger than those of 'Limelight'. The white flowers, with large, hyacinth-like petals, turn pale pink. This strong plant reaches approx. 120 cm in height and 70 cm in width.
Diervilla spl. 'Kodiak Red'
Miscanthus sin. 'Pink Cloud' 14 Javado magazine
Warm red in spring, turning to green in summer and bright red in autumn. Light yellow flowers from summer to autumn provide an appealing contrast and attract bees. Grows in dry, shady places. Very hardy. Beautiful pink flower panicles. Abundant flowers that really stand out on this compact plant that reaches a height of just 1 m. Pink Cloud® needs little care, and can be grown in most types of soil.
Salvia jam. 'Amethyst Lips®'
Heuchera 'Wildberry'
Green leaves with cream edges, pink flower buds, cherry-red leaf buds, and yellow flowers in the summer. Leaf retains colour during summer and autumn. Dense growth; 10 to 15 cm high and 45 cm wide. Striking contrast between flower buds and leaves. Each leaf has a unique colour, ranging from light green to almost silver. Deep-red flower buds appear from August. Leaf edge changes from yellow to red. Beautiful, two-tone flowers. Petals are white, with a soft pink blush. The plants remain very compact (approx. 50 cm). Flowers very abundantly from July. The very decorative tricolour leaf contrasts beautifully with the lilac-pink flowers which appear in early May. The compact, bushy growth of this Weigelia makes it ideal for planting in soil or a nice terrace pot. Very resilient salvia. Bushy structure with fragrant leaves. The flowers, which appear in June, are initially purple, then turn two-tone. Reaches a height of approx. 80 cm. It can be left in a dry spot. Shiny leaves in a unique purple colour. The leaves remain purple for almost the entire season. Lovely colour for borders. The flower stems are dark, while the flowers turn white.

Grower report
H.L. Hogervorst
Sandra and Gert-Jan Hogervorst live and work right next to the Dutch dunes. They grow potted bulb products, including hyacinths and daffodils. Gert-Jan's father was one of the pioneers in selling potted bulb products to the auction house in Naaldwijk back in the 1970s. Read on to find out what it takes to supply the perfect bulb. Tell us about the history of your company My father started the nursery in 1968, cultivating tulips and hyacinths for the cut flower market. In the mid-1970s, it was decided to pot the bulbs and sell them as plants. These were sold locally, until the FloraHolland flower auction house asked whether the potted bulbs could also be auctioned. Potted bulbs were fairly new at the time, but they quickly caught on. In the late 1980s, our barns were completely destroyed by a major fire, but this tragedy did give us an opportunity to build a more modern company. It was at this point that I joined the company. Today, I run the business together with my wife Sandra. We’ve perfected all the processes, and potted bulbs are more popular than ever. What do you mean by perfecting the processes? A whole range of tasks have to be dealt with before potted bulbs are ready for delivery. For example, a hyacinth bulb about to bloom may have hidden defects that will stop its flowers from developing, or cause them to bloom for a shorter time. These things aren’t always visible, so we do everything ourselves to ensure the bulbs we supply to our customers are in top condition. We grow our own bulbs, unlike some potted bulb suppliers. We start off by scooping the bulbs.
16 Javado magazine
Can you remind us what scooping is? We start this process by selecting a lot of very high quality, virus-free bulbs as the parents of our future bulbs. We scoop out the centre of the basal plate with a hooked knife. This has to be done very precisely, so not too deep and not too shallow. These bulbs are placed in soil, where bulblets will form in the scooped-out section. These bulblets eventually grow into large bulbs. After a planting, harvesting and drying process that takes an average of 4 years, they attain the diameter required to guarantee a beautiful flower.
During the delivery season, our hands are already full with meeting demand, so we’re building extra processing space.
"You can rest assured that our bulbs have no hidden defects"
How do you see the future of potted bulbs? Potted bulbs are easy to care for, provide colour in the winter, and are rooted in our culture. There are no problems in terms of popularity, but there are a lot of challenges. Weather conditions can ruin part of the harvest, with heavy showers posing a particular threat. We’re also strictly monitored to make our cultivation more sustainable. I support this 100%, but it does mean significant investments are necessary. A bright future awaits those bulb growers who can best deal with these challenges.
We take a look at the drying room, where the bulbs are left to rest for a period in the summer. I’m very strict on making sure the bulbs get the right period of rest at the appropriate temperature. There’s certainly a temptation to be flexible in the number of weeks required for this, but that can damage the quality of the bulbs. When the bulbs are removed from the soil, they have to dry and rest. They are also subject to temperature treatment, where we gradually raise the temperature to 44 ° C to kill any bacteria. When we think this period is complete, we take samples. We cut the bulb in half, and can see if the flower is present. Your company is also known for its wide range of bulbs in ceramics, baskets and glassware. What’s the story behind this? Potted bulbs are ideal for attractive, decorative pots. Sandra is constantly on the lookout for nice supports, and we asked Carolien from the retail brand TIMO to create some pretty products. However it does mean extra work in the company.
What is your relationship with Javado? Javado has been ordering from us since back in the 1980s. Fred is my contact at Javado. If he finds something where there’s room for improvement, he let’s us know. That suits me and my way of thinking perfectly. Together, we’ve made sure that we can work together very smoothly, even at the busiest times.

Samples are taken at the end of the rest period. The bulb is cut open. Here, the flower structure can already be seen. The microscope is used to check whether the stamens and pistil are also present. Sandra (at the front) manually scoops out the basal plates in hyacinth bulbs with a hooked knife. Daughter Jill (behind) also lends a hand.
The cut must not be too deep They grow into fully-fledged or shallow. hyacinth bulbs. These are 2 years old, and have a couple more years to go.

In the spotlight: the wide range of Narcissus
Hogervorst supplies potted bulb products from the second half of October until Easter. The season kicks off with hyacinths, which are supplied from Brittany (FR) for the first few weeks. The bulbs there are at the right stage a little earlier, reflecting the slight seasonal differences with the Netherlands.

The success of bulb on pot Imagine: you’re a fan of bulb flowers, it’s winter, and your home could use some colour. Or, spring is coming, and your garden would look so much better with some colour, but you forgot to plant bulbs in the autumn. Lots of people find themselves in these situations, which has resulted in a market where bulb-on-pot growers have found themselves a useful niche. They make sure that there’s a beautiful range of bulb flowers ready and waiting for customers at garden centres in winter and early spring.
Care These plants get their nutrition from their bulbs, so the only thing they need is light and water. Indoor bulb flowers have to be watered regularly. Make sure that the pot isn’t standing in a layer of water. The cooler the location where you place them, the longer they’ll last. Even if the bulb flowers are placed outside, keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t dry out
Great for experimenting Bulb-on-pot products are really flexible. They can be planted outside in balcony boxes and borders, or indoors in attractive pots. The really creative can even remove the bulbs from the pot, and arrange them attractively without potting soil.

Skimmia Obsession®
Camellia Volunteer®
Sarcococca Confusa
This beautiful plant sells itself in December, when the large, red berries glisten between the sturdy, dark green leaves.
The camellia Volunteer® immediately catches the eye thanks to its beautiful flowers. The petals of each large, very full flower are curled, with beautiful white edges. When this species appeared on the market, I obviously wanted one for my own garden too. Now I know how much more the Volunteer® has to offer.
Lots of garden owners don’t know about this evergreen shrub, which is a shame to be honest. This Sarcococca blooms in the winter, and is one of the few garden plants that emit a scent right from February.
The Obsession® is a female plant. Just to remind you about how Skimmias grow: Female plants flower in the spring and produce berries in the winter. They need a male Skimmia for pollination. For each 6 female plants, 1 male plant is required, of any species or cultivar. The pollinator doesn’t even have to be right next to it. One well-known example of a male plant is the Skimmia japonica Rubella.
The flowers first appear in the winter, when they are a soft pink with white. After a few weeks, I noticed that the flowers had deeper colours, and by the end of the flowering season, the colours had even turned to red via dark pink. The Volunteer® has a very long flowering period: several months in fact!
The plant grows slowly, retaining its compact form well. In my opinion, it’s a really nice plant in the winter garden.
The dark green foliage stays fresh and shiny all year round. I think this newcomer to the market will make a name for itself, and become a fixed feature in garden centres.
So, the Obsession® sells itself? Make sure you also sell a male Skimmia at the same time.

After flowering, the small, cream-coloured flower clusters on the shrub give way to red berries which gradually turn black.

Grower report
FlorAmor
This report all started with a drive to Belgium, the birthplace of azalea floriculture, and home to Azalea grower FlorAmor. Christoph Stevens is my enthusiastic guide during the special visit to the Ghent region that follows. Why is Belgium traditionally the epicentre of the azalea world? This plant originated in East Asia. In the late 18th century, explorers brought back beautiful plants from their far-off journeys for the local aristocracy, who competed with each other in flaunting their collections of exotic plants. The azalea really caught the eye thanks to its wealth of flowers. The plant quickly became popular, and it turned out that the region around the rich city of Ghent was perfect for cultivating the plant. It enjoys a moderate sea climate, and the wide sand ridge in the area provides the ideal soil. Azaleas have been grown here for over 200 years, so knowledge about them is interwoven in our society. That includes me, as I’ve been visiting and working at the nursery since I was a child. It’s therefore no surprise that the vast majority of azaleas come from this region.
Thanks to this merger, it’s much more efficient for us to make the investments required to make our company more sustainable. It benefits our customers because they have access to the complete azalea range, and we can handle all their orders, whether large or small. What challenges do you face in growing a good azalea? It’s a sensitive plant to grow, but the right amount of effort and care delivers strong plants. We have a number of cultivation sites, and all our crop managers have plenty of experience. Together, we make sure the right conditions are in place all the time, because it’s virtually impossible to correct any mistakes during breeding. The biggest challenge, however, is the time these plants take to grow. The azaleas we supply are 2 to 3 years old, so the decisions we make in terms of the range are only visible years later. “Many years ago I drove north with some plant samples, Javado was my first stop."
How might our customers know FlorAmor? Indoor azaleas are our main crop. We place our proven standard varieties on the market under the name 'Flandresse' and our special, innovative varieties under the name 'Hortinno'. We also grow a number of other plants, including Rhododendron and Clivia. The name of our nursery is fairly new, a result of the merger of two nurseries in 2018.
What is your relationship with Javado? In the past, we used Belgian traders to sell our stock. In the late 1990s, I realised that I could reach all of Europe through the network of Dutch exporters, so I drove north with some plant samples. Javado was my first stop. They were happy to talk to this young Belgian, and we clicked immediately. I’m still very pleased with the way they pay attention to their suppliers, and the click is still there.
How did that happen? We are both highly specialised azalea growers, and we cooperated with each other regularly.
We drive to the site where the Azalea Hortinno® is grown under the supervision of expert Piet. Full of passion, he explains the process that
26 Javado magazine
starts with a cutting and ends with a flowering plant. Everything we grow comes from our own cuttings. First, the azalea is topped several times during cultivation. This results in well-branched plants with lots of flowers. The parts we remove are used as cuttings for our future plants. These are planted in pots, where they take root. We make sure the soil is very wet, and cover the pots with foil. This creates a climate with 100% humidity. Once roots have developed, we remove the foil. During the last year of the cultivation, the plants are place outside, because Azaleas need to be stimulated by cold to develop flowers. What can we expect from you in the future? Together with the breeder who works exclusively for us, we’re developing some really beautiful varieties. These are more resilient, so they can be grown in a more sustainable way, and can also withstand conditions indoors and in the store more easily. We’re also developing new flower and leaf shapes, and innovative colours. The Kinku Saku is a new series, and features beautiful spider flowers. Patience is needed to scale up new species to create larger quantities. Next spring, we’ll finally be ready to supply a nice batch of this product.

Tips from the grower

8.5 ha. of greenhouses / 8 ha. container fields 15 employees + 20 seasonal employees 3 million plants per year
It all starts when buying a plant. Consumers should make sure that the azalea has thick buds, and a few flowers already open. If you put a raw azalea straight in the living room, it won’t bloom properly.

Azaleas love plenty of water, but don’t tolerate being in a continuous layer of water. Giving plenty of water twice a week works much better than putting the plant in a dish of water. A system such as Waterwick® gives excellent results.

If placed in a cool spot in the home, an azalea can produce a rich bouquet of flowers for about 7 weeks. The plant will end flowering earlier if placed in the full sun.
The azalea delivery season The early species are available in small numbers from mid-August . Towards December, the number of species and quantities available increase. In recent years, October has become a month with a high turnover.
Sustainability FlorAmor is committed to sustainability in every aspect: from biological pesticides, to 100% recycling of the water. Certification MPS-GAP, SQ and Productproof

strong characteristics such as healthy roots, no deterioration and dark red flower buds. The plant stands out thanks to the contrast between the flower buds and the foliage. Each leaf has a unique colour, varying from light green to almost silver. In autumn and winter especially, 'Perosa' is a beautiful eye-catcher in the garden. It is a hardy cultivar and when winter sets in, the pale yellow edge of the leaves changes to red.

Grower report
Verboom Nursery
Verboom Nursery is a family business with a passion for Helleborus. Their variety 'Verboom Beauty' is a household name in the market, but they have lot of other attractive products available. Jos Verboom and his father Hans took the time to show us how they’re working all year round on growing the perfect winter flowering plants. Tell us more about Verboom Nursery, and what products you grow that our customers might already know about? My father started the nursery in 1960, I took over at the helm in 1998, and my son Jos is now the third generation working in this family business. We market Helleborus and Skimmia under the brand name 'Winter Angels'. We supply no less than 47 different hellebore varieties, including the unique 'Frostkiss' range and, of course, our 'Verboom Beauty'. "I see myself as a coach of top athletes" What does cultivating Helleborus involve? For us, it involves a huge amount of work. We start at the very beginning, with breeding. We breed the plants in-house, and employ a breeder who works exclusively for us. We receive all the species we grow as tissue culture, which means we can be sure that we’ll end up with pure, uniform plants. Here at our nursery, we put the cultures in plugs ourselves. The plants then root in the plugs in a warm, moist greenhouse. We then transfer them to small pots, and move them to the next department. It takes at least 2 to 2.5 years before the plants are finally ready to be sold. 42 Javado magazine
While we walk through the nursery, Jos lets us see and feel how well the plants are rooted. The drive to supply perfect plants can be quite extreme. I see myself as a coach of top athletes. I make sure the nutrition is as good as possible, and growing conditions ideal. Cultivation is very labour intensive. We know exactly what’s best for the plants. It keeps us busy year round, even though our delivery season runs from November to March. What makes the 'Verboom Beauty' species so special? The 'Verboom Beauty' is a truly unique product of the breeding programme, since it’s actually the only hellebore that will bloom well in the living room. Every plant has lots of buds, and every single one of them flowers. These flowers are strong and a beautifully bright white. This, in combination with the way we deliver these plants, has led to it becoming a success. What is special about the way you deliver them? We clean the pot, we water them one last time, then we carefully cut all the leaves away from each plant to make the flowers stand out. Flower arrangers and florists were the first to see the beauty and potential of this product. Today, lots of consumers enjoy making arrangements themselves, and the 'Verboom Beauty' is a popular addition to the range sold in garden centres. What do we need to know about your other Hellebore species? The Helleborus orientalis is an ideal garden plant,
known for its variety of colourful speckled flowers. We grow lots of species. The range is very popular, with 'Abigail' and 'Cinderella' the most popular types. Helleborus niger is the best-selling Helleborus before Christmas, as it starts flowering before the festive season. We grow Helleborus niger 'Shining Star’, intended for the luxury segment. The plants are extremely hardy. While some niger species mainly produce a lot of leaves and few flowers, we believe this variety has the ideal leaf/ flower ratio. We also grow Helleborus 'Frostkiss', a range for the luxury segment of the green retail trade. [see box on page 39]
What is your relationship with Javado? We believe that everything you care for grows. This also applies to the care with which we treat our customers. We have to decide which export companies we want to work intensively with, and Javado has proven to be an excellent choice. For example, Javado has managed to put the 'Verboom Beauty' on the map in the UK. What can we expect in the future? As a relatively small family business, we don’t like to reveal too much about our latest developments, but here’s a sneak preview: Helleborus 'Sifra'. Similar to the 'Verboom Beauty', but with dark pink flowers!

A list of all the plants grown
Rodney Davey is a hellebore enthusiast from Cornwall in the UK. His ultimate goal was to develop a hellebore with attractive marbled leaves as well as beautiful coloured flowers. Hellebuses with marbled leaves do exist, but these have pale green flowers. After 12 years of manually transferring pollen from one flower to another, he finally succeeded.
Skimmia jap. Rubella Skimmia jap. Finchy Helleborus Frostkiss (12 varieties) Helleborus Verboom Beauty Helleborus niger Shining Star en Kindly Star Helleborus orientalis (32 varieties)
When the famous British plant book author Anna Pavord unsuspectingly visited his nursery, and discovered a beautiful plant with marbled leaves and red flowers showing off its virtues on the workbench, Anna was amazed, especially when she was told that it would be called 'Anna's Red'. Anna's Red is not only a star in terms of its appearance, the plant is also very resilient and strong, and the flowers retain their beauty for an exceptionally long time. Anna has since been joined by a number of brother and sister plants, all with the same marbled leaves and strong characteristics, but different colour flowers. Verboom Nursery has the exclusive right to grow these species in the Netherlands.SSS

Tips from the grower Helleborus is a hardy garden plant, but can also be left in pots on the terrace. Potted Helleborus needs to be watered regularly. Make sure there are holes at the bottom of the pot. If Helleborus is planted in the open ground, watering is only necessary if there is a drought. A useful tip: cut the leaves back in December, so that the flowers can’t get stuck under them. It’s best to cut them 5-cm above the ground.

Javado inside MEET ANNET VAN DER VALK. ANNET, WHO IS MARRIED AND HAS 3 GROWNUP CHILDREN IN THEIR TWENTIES AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEBTOR MANAGEMENT. How did you end up at Javado? 13 years ago, I saw an advertisement for the job of debtor management. I used to work in a similar position at a bank, and since I love plants, I responded immediately. Another aspect I liked and still enjoy studying various languages. What does your job involve? I check customers who have placed a new order. If there are any payments still outstanding, I contact them. I’m also responsible for resolving differences in payments, and I make payment agreements with customers. In addition, I do the standard tasks associated with debtor management, such as sending reminders. Is it ever difficult to talk about payments? Yes, sometimes it can be embarrassing to ask someone to pay. Even so, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect the rules that have been agreed to be respected. I always try to talk to customers with respect, and a little bit of humour to keep things light. Are you still a big fan of plants? Absolutely! In fact, I always have been. Even when I was little, I had plants in my room and my own little vegetable garden outside. Now, our house is full of plants, and our garden is an oasis of green, with rain barrels, solar panels, plants for bees and butterflies; basically, I’m as GREEN as you can get! What do you like doing in your free time? I enjoy working around the house and garden. The beach is nearby, so I also like going there. I always enjoy being in natural surroundings. I like to spend my holidays in the beautiful natural areas and cities of Europe. There’s so much to see still!
