Sea of flowers on the patio with Azalea japonica ‘Pink Spider’ The flowers are large and bright pink with white edges, and are unusually shaped. ‘Pink Spider’ also flowers very profusely. All in all, this is a striking plant, suitable for the border, a patio pot, or even as a houseplant. We supply the ‘Pink Spider’ in a 17-cm pot. The coloured cultivation pot and the large label means this plant can be attractively presented in a retail environment.

Javado wins the Glee Best Houseplant Award The Echeveria Devotion entry won us the prize for best houseplant at the virtual Glee Show. Echeveria Devotion has a stately allure, thanks to its velvety leaves with burgundy-red edges. See page 39 for more information about this novelty.

Going live soon: new webshop Our new webshop is designed to make ordering quick and clear. Geckos keep bromeliads clean Grower Bromelia Specialist has welcomed a whole army of new employees; geckos that are released on the plants in the hot greenhouses. These agile reptiles feast on the insects and small spiders that can be found in bromeliads. The result is clean plants without spider silk or insects, and without the need for pesticides. 2 Javado magazine

Spotted at the grower During a visit to a grower, our orchid buyer noticed an unusual combination; a large-flowered Phalaenopsis grown together with a multi-flora version in a 17cm pot. Tests are still ongoing, and this new concept hasn’t yet been named. It’s thought that a number of items with pink Phalaenopsis will be able to be delivered soon.

Rhododendron for gourmets Although supplies are still very limited, we’d nevertheless like to introduce the special Rhododendron Wine & Roses to you. These compact plants feature really pretty pink flowers, but it’s the leaves that make this variety so special. The undersides of the 2-tone leaves are wine red, and the foliage can be enjoyed all year round. Rhododendron Wine & Roses remains fairly compact, and is ideal for borders, even in smaller gardens.

Phalaenopsis grown without a pot We’re all familiar with the phalaenopsis in a cultivation pot with bark (orchid soil). The phalaenopsis ROOT16 goes back to the roots of this orchid, and shows how it survives on water and air, just like it would in its natural environment. The way these plants are cultivated is completely different right from the outset. The young plants are suspended in a warm, moist production vase, so they get used to this climate. They have plenty of space and produce about 4 times as many roots as in a pot. This is actually essential, because while the plant in the pot can get moisture from the bark, the ROOT16 has to do it all by itself. Cultivation takes about 30% longer, because the plant has to grow a highly effective root system. The grower gets the plant used to little water and a lot of water, so it can survive for a very long time both in a store and at the consumer. Provide 2 to 5 cm of water in the vase, but a day without water is no problem at all.

Grower report

Opti-flor

Marco Hendriks

The apple-green logo might be small, but it represents a major brand in the world of indoor plants. Opti-flor’s orchids have made a name for themselves among exporters, florists and garden centres, so I’m looking forward to a glimpse behind the scenes. Co-owner Marco Hendriks is going to do the honours and show me around. How would you describe Opti-flor in a few words? Opti-flor is the brand that drives everything we do, and central to all our work. It’s a brand that represents innovation and the highest quality moth orchids (phalaenopsis). The concepts we develop help the specialist trade stand out from general retailers. Quality is always more important than quantity. The passion for our plants and the specialist trade is intertwined with our corporate culture. The company has an interesting history. How did Opti-flor come into existence? My grandfather started the nursery in 1928, and grew everything from cauliflower to tobacco. When my cousin René and I took over the nursery in the mid-1990s, it had been a tomato farm for many years. We grew top quality products, but the world of tomatoes is all about quantity rather than quality. Since creating something that stands out is in our blood, and our dream was to make a name for ourselves with quality and innovation, we started looking for a different crop. In the late 1990s, we decided to grow phalaenopsis, and set ourselves a new course: “At the top within 3 years.” At the time, this bold statement was published in a trade journal. It wasn’t appreciated by existing phalaenopsis growers, but fortunately we were able to live up to our words. “It was a bold statement, but fortunately we were able to live up to our words.” What does it take to continuously supply top-quality phalaenopsis? Patience, space and care! Patience: we give the plants the time they need to grow. During the first months it’s important that the roots and leaves get plenty of time to develop. These are the basis of a strong orchid. Then we give them plenty of time for further growth in the colder stage. We know exactly how to cool our greenhouses. This cool environment does mean that the plants need 8 Javado magazine

more time to grow, but it results in thicker branches, larger flowers, and a longer shelf life. Space: the plants are given plenty of space to grow. We could fit in more plants per square metre and grow more, but here once again our mantra is quality over quantity. Care: we look after our plants right from the young plant material to the packaging process. Obviously, the last thing we want is to damage a perfect plant while it’s prepared for shipment. Innovation is the other important pillar. How innovative are you? We’ve already created 25 unique concepts, the Singolo being one example. This moth orchid, which in terms of plant structure resembles a slipper orchid, is the brainchild of René. He has an incredible number of creative ideas that he develops with his team. By developing these products, we want to give garden centres an opportunity to offer innovative products and choose the concepts that best suit their customers. We introduce new concepts every year. What’s the next new concept? We’re going to introduce a concept with a scented phalaenopsis called ‘Aromio’ soon. I also have something else new; the much loved Tablo phalaenopsis, a very compact plant with large white flowers, will soon be available in various other colours! How do you see the future? We want to work even more closely with garden centres. Our concepts such as the Aquo perfectly reflect what consumers want, but we’re still looking for the best way to provide background information at the point of sale. We still see enormous potential for garden centres to successfully sell special phalaenopsis. It’s our job to get our buyers and their end customers to understand the power of our products. In addition, we’re expanding our range, and introducing other orchid species one by one. Examples include Epidendrum, Cattleya and Maxilaria, beautiful orchids that we’re slowly but surely going to place on the market with the quality expected of Opti-flor. It will conclude what I started with. We’re doing everything possible to make sure this brand is built to

last. Even though René and I have to retire at some point, Opti-flor will carry on.

Research & Development Department Opti-flor has an in-house R&D department where it tests 1,000 to 1,500 new varieties every year. Promising varieties are then subjected to shelf-life tests. The prettiest varieties are selected from the limited number of new varieties that remain, and added to the range.

Opti-flor in our webshop Opti-flor cultivates products in various locations, each with its own expertise, such as multiflora, grandiflora, or specials. You can see everything in the Opti-flor range in our webshop: Filter > Opti-flor

Tablo, the compact grandiflora, is now also available in other colours besides white

All the concepts at a glance: • Optimost • Exclusivo • Singolo • Singolo Arto • Singolo Hello • Singolo Aquarello • Singolo & Co • Ponto • Shape-it • Fontano • Mirror Miracle • Balletto • Bambuso • Freedanzo • Willd Orchid • Artisto • Botanico • Boquetto • Bellissimo • MyMonroe • Tablo • Fortuno • Theatro • Formidablo • Bijoux • Aromio

Building a strong brand The timing was perfect; from the moment Opti-flor was established, appreciation for the phalaenopsis product group boomed. Despite the fact that the company couldn’t cope with the demand, it was always present at European trade fairs to tell the story behind Opti-flor. Year after year, Opti-flor maintains a presence, always with its narrative of passion and quality, and always with new concepts.

New: Phalaenopsis Aromio The special varieties of the new Aromio concept are not only pleasing to the eye, they also have a lovely fragrance. The most attractive air freshener ever! Grower’s tip I want our orchids to be able to bloom at their best in the consumer’s home. The best care is also the easiest care. We’ve developed a special ceramic system for our moth orchids, called Aquo. All you have to do is refill the reservoir with water every 2 weeks. This system works really well. Plants flower for longer, and we even use it ourselves in our permanent showroom. It couldn’t work any better. The visual aspect is also important, so various stylish designs of this ceramic system are available from us. I believe this really represents added value for the consumer who appreciates quality. You can find the items with Aquo ceramics in our webshop by simply searching for the term Aquo.

- Limited Specials -

Special plants in the ‘curiosity shop’ Often, the most special plants can be found nestling among the small batches, and the testing areas hidden away in a back corner at the grower. The quantities are too small to include them in the normal range, and then, before you know it, someone else snaps them up at the grower. However, we’ve arranged a solution. We buy up these special batches directly, and list them in our stock in our ‘limited specials’ in our webshop. You can immediately see how much is still available, and as soon as the batch sells out, it’s automatically removed from the webshop. So, if you’re also a fan of variegated monstera, pink peperomia or black alocasia, don’t forget to regularly take a look around our curiosity shop.

Floral splendor with potted bulbs Our very extensive range of potted bulbs has been completely updated. There is something for everyone in our webshop, such as the interesting items from the Roma Nova brand.

Skimmia japonica Rubesta® Jos If you’re a fan of the popular Skimmia jap. Rubella, I can heartily recommend the renewed variety Skimmia jap. Rubesta® Jos. It’s a big improvement, with deep red flower buds. Growth and flowers form from the thickenings of branches on the sides of Rubesta® Jos, resulting in a compact plant with lots of flower buds. You can enjoy the dark red flower buds all winter long. The Rubesta® Jos starts budding about 3 weeks earlier than the Rubella. The white-pink flowers appear in spring, and are wonderfully scented.

Viburnum tinus Lisa Rose® What I really like about Viburnum tinus Lila Rose® are the dark pink buds where the white flowers emerge. They give this plant a lot of ornamental value, even when it’s still in bud. Moreover, an attractive contrast between dark pink and white is created when the flowers start opening. This evergreen shrub blooms in winter, so it’s a highly attractive addition to the garden. This Viburnum flowers for a long time, so it helps feed butterflies in the spring. Beautiful blue berries appear after flowering. Different types and pot sizes can be found in our web shop

Helleborus Ice N’ Roses® For a long time, it was thought that it would be impossible to cross winter-flowering hellebore varieties with the spring-flowering hellebore varieties. When this was eventually resolved, the reward was impressive. The resulting varieties are robust, enjoy a long lifespan, and are resistant to diseases and pests. The Ice N’ Roses® series shares all these properties. The plants even thrive in the sun, and bloom for a very long period of time. The Ice N ‘Roses® hellebore range is ideal for the specialist trade. There are varieties with white, pink or red flowers. All these plants will certainly delight the consumer. Different types and pot sizes can be found in our web shop Javado magazine 13

Get to know the millennial better

The Urban Jungle trend has led to millennials becoming a key target group for indoor plant sales in recent years. The unprecedented situation which arose in the spring has revealed that now the number of millennials also interested in gardening shouldn’t be underestimated. So, what do we know about this target group? And how can we get them hooked to our green sector?

everything?

Millennials are between 25 and 40 years old in 2020. There is a big generational gap between millennials and previous generations, as they grew up in a world of rapid technological change. The enormous growth of social media has particularly affected the way they act. Below, we briefly explain a number of characteristics that apply in general to millennials, also known as Generation Y. Buying behaviour Millennials are very careful when it comes to making purchases. They look for the product with the best specifications or which best suits their ideals, so the price isn’t always the decisive factor. Brands with a clear identity are preferred, and quality is important. Products have to be easy to carry or delivered quickly. Share, share, share Millennials love to share their experiences, and they’re always in touch with each other. That means there are also opportunities to get in touch with them, social media being the obvious example. Here, short digestible chunks of information that help the millennial gain experience in gardening could be useful. Social media is also a way of getting positive experiences acquired in your garden centre or with your product, shared by millennials. And don’t forget, if your consumer comes across something surprising or funny while shopping, it takes no time to take and share a photo or video. The millennial gardener Search terms related to gardening have really taken off since the spring. Europe has gained millions of new gardeners in a short period of time, many of them between the ages of 25 and 40. Now is the time to get as many new gardeners as possible hooked. Found out where to reach millennials, and concentrate on topics that are important to them, such as sustainability and wellness. Help them with their first steps in gardening. Be clear in your communications, so they don’t have any doubts about planting that fruit tree or creating that vegetable garden. 14 Javado magazine

Millennial stereotypes

High expectations Millennials have high expectations when it comes to customer experience, and are willing to pay for it. Experience Create experiences, possibly together with local businesses such as breweries, beekeepers, sports instructors, etc. Millennials really appreciate unique experiences. Authenticity Millennials prefer transparent brands that really deliver on their promise. The experiences of other users are more relevant than the promises of the brand itself. Note: the generation that followes the millennials (Generation Z) is even more extreme in this respect. Beautiful photoshopped images and slick promotional films mean little to them; they prefer photos and films that tell the real story, even if the technical quality is poor.

Feedback Millennials love giving feedback, all you need to do is ask. The home base is more important than ever There has been an enormous increase in the number of people homeworking, so having a good home base, where people can work, exercise and relax, has become more important. Plants can help enormously in this respect; for example, plants that suit the home workplace well, and aid concentration (see our poster set on Page 5). Solutions for small spaces A relatively large number of millennials live in flats with limited interior and outdoor space. Share your thoughts and offer attractive solutions for small spaces, such as vertical planting and mini vegetable and fruit plants for the balcony, or houseplants in nice hanging pots.

Gifts with meaning Research has shown that millennials like giving high-quality gifts with a meaning. For example, a pretty butterfly plant combined with a small insect hotel, or an air-purifying plant in a cool outer pot. Back to nature Many millennials want to promote nature in their surroundings, and fortunately this is easy to achieve. Giving nature a helping hand is playing an increasingly central role in garden design, and public spaces are being designed more and more to fulfil an ecological function. There are already projects in the Netherlands in which the local government is encouraging residents to make their gardens greener; in other words, more plants in streets and gardens. Great news for our sector!

It’s a good idea to be aware of the characteristics of this target group, which does behave differently to the previous Baby Boomers and Generation X. The quality of the product and service, and speed and ease of delivery are essential. If you’d like to modify your range, but you’re not sure where to start, we’d be glad to share our thoughts. Our knowledge of the supply market and sales figures means we’re in a position to help. We’d be delighted to work with you on finding exactly the right note. GENERATIONS OVERVIEW Generation

Botany

The best plant families in the world

Tillandsia Tillandsias have barely any roots, and appear to survive from nothing but air. It was exactly this that made Linnaeus decide to name this plant genus with more than 500 species after his colleague, Elias Tillands, who couldn’t stand water. Scales The scales on the leaves absorb water and nutrients from the air and rain. Tillandsias are found in the forests, mountains and deserts of Central and South America. The species with green, thin, broad leaves are from the wetter areas, while tillandsias from drier areas have thick, narrow, grey leaves. Known as air plants, they can also thrive without potting soil. Creative This makes them suitable for all kinds of unique designs. Air plants can be simply placed on a glass dish, stuck against tree trunks, or suspended on fishing wire. The number of possibilities is endless. Care Air plants need plenty of light, but no direct sunlight. Spray them once a week with rainwater. This will give these slow-growing plants all the moisture and food they need.

Grower report

About Plants Zundert

Jelle Havermans

I’m on my way to About Plants Zundert on a beautiful autumn day. In fact, I’m going to visit two nurseries that have joined forces. This visit is taking me to Zundert, a region that’s home to a large number of tree nurseries in the province of Brabant. Jelle and I get into a golf cart, and take a look into every nook and cranny of these large nurseries. Can you tell us something about the history of About Plants Zundert? Ron van Opstal has a nursery, as does his brother-in-law and sister, Hans and Josie Jochems-Van Opstal. About 15 years ago, they decided they wanted to increase trade with exporters so they could supply garden centres outside the Netherlands. This involves a lot of work at both commercial and administrative level. Growers Ron and Hans would rather be tending their plants than staring at a computer screen, so they decided to set up ‘About Plants Zundert’ as an umbrella sales organisation. Together with my colleagues, I make sure that our enormous range appears on exporters’ digital supply banks, that quotations and proposals are drawn up, and that the daily trade runs smoothly.

It’s all running really well. I also visit other nurseries here in Zundert without links to the exporters, and if the quality of their range is flawless and complements our range, then we also offer their plants under About Plants Zundert, and make sure that they’re included in the daily trade. “Our plants bring colour to the retail environment, and gardens of course ” What does your range look like? These are garden plants with a big visual appeal. Our plants bring colour to the retail environment, and gardens of course. We’re very good in colourful shrubs, such as Pieris, Leucothoe and Nandina. Our range also includes conifers, callunas, skimmias, gaultherias and ornamental grasses, as well as lots of other original garden plants. Do some plants deserve more space in retail displays than they’re currently getting? I think the Nandina is a fantastic plant that has a lot to offer the garden 20 Javado magazine

throughout the year. We have a new variety; the Nandina Blush Pink. The green leaves have a pink glow to them, and from mid-September they turn a beautiful orange. They’re highly recommended for garden centres at this point. Another favourite of mine is Andromeda, perfect sphere shaped plants that look a bit like lavender. We sell these evergreen plants all year round, with a peak in the spring when they bloom. I think Euonymus Himalaya will be a hit next spring. This plant with beautiful green leaves has top shoots that turn white, giving it the appearance of a green mountain with a snowy peak. Most of your plants are now sold in garden centres. How do you view the future of this sector? We’re still really pleased that we linked our nurseries with garden centres. There’s an enormous amount of growth, and pleasant dynamics. I’ve noticed that garden centres can now sell plants in more expensive segments as well, besides the standard 13-cm, 17-cm and 19-cm segments. We grow a number of shrubs in 32-cm pots. Garden centre use these as ‘living advertisements’ to improve sales in the conventional segments, but they’ve also noticed that these big eye-catchers sell very quickly. As you can see, we’re also very busy today. I’m very positive about the garden centre sector. How are you enjoying working with Javado? We’re very happy with it. If no order from Javado arrives for a day, we immediately check whether there’s a problem with the internet, because Javado really does send orders daily. You’re growing enormously, and you share your thoughts with us. All our staff know Javado, and gladly make that little extra effort.

Success story: ‘Curly Red’ and ‘Twisting Red’ One of Ron van Opstal’s absolute success stories is the Leucothoe ‘Curly Red’. Since he bred and marketed this strain, it has become a deeply loved plant. Besides the ‘Curly Red’, he also developed the ‘Twisting Red’, with a curled leaf that grows in a spiral form. The leaves of this variety also change colour significantly to purple-red in autumn. Leucothoe ‘Dark Diamond’ develops very dark foliage, with burgundy highlights

Pieris jap. ‘Little Goldy’ is a variety developed in-house

The spiral growth and changing leaf colour of ‘Twisting Red’

Vaccinium vitis-idaea ‘Fireballs’ is at its best in the middle of the autumn

Product range Abelia Acer Albizia Andromeda Aucuba Buddleja Carex Caryopteris Calycanthus Calliandra Calluna Cercis Ceanothus Choisya Chamaecyparis Cordyline Cortaderia Corylus Coprosma Disporum Euonymus Festuca Forsythia Gaultheria Hamamelis Hebe Addenda Hibiscus

Tips from the grower I’d like to highlight the Leucothoe. This garden plant is suitable for the border, but also looks great in a pot on the terrace. You do have to be a bit careful, though. Don’t place Leucothoe in direct sunlight, but in the shade or partial shade. It does best in humus-rich, fairly acidic and moist soil.

Nandina dom. ‘Blush Pink’ changes colour spectacularly in the autumn

I recommend gardeners fertilise it with heather manure to keep the soil acidity at the right level, and to sprinkle the soil with a layer of bark mulch. This is both decorative and prevents soil from drying out too quickly. Give water when the weather is dry. Pruning is not essential, but removing old twigs after flowering does result in extra new growth.

Good in Skimmia The range of Skimmias is grown in a cold greenhouse, which optimises the purity of the crop. About Plants Zundert grows a number of highly regarded varieties, such as the Finchy, the Dwarf series, and the Rubesta series. These can also be ordered from Javado as mix layers.

The colourful foliage of Leucothoe ‘Makijaz’

Andromeda The crop resembles lavender, and the bell-shaped flowers resemble heather. The Andromeda has it all, and remains green all year round; or grey in the case of the Andromeda ‘Blue Ice’

Banners and posters

Javado has designed a number of posters and banners especially for Christmas 2020. This year, the banners are made of a lightweight sheet material (ForexÂŽ) instead of flag fabric. The banners are only available while stocks last.

24 Javado magazine

We’ve created a series of 3 Forex® advertising panels. Forex® is a strong, lightweight material. These panels, which are 110-cm high, 40-cm wide and 5-mm thick, are printed on both sides. You’re free to make holes and suspend them, or simply place them in a suitable location.

About Javado Although he might not yet be known to everybody, Nick van Delft’s work affects us all indirectly. What do we mean? Find out in this interview with our young, passionate colleague. How did you end up at Javado? I ended up here during a gap year of my business economics course. Now, a few years later, I’m a permanent member of the team, and my job here is really interesting and challenging. And what does this interesting job entail? I’m a Business Intelligence Specialist. I analyse data, and help make substantiated decisions that advance both our progress and that of our customers. Besides this aspect, I’m also responsible for automation. This concerns things like our software package, our webshop, our servers, the sticker printers, and so on. Can customers still expect some changes in this area? Absolutely! We’re going to launch a new, fully responsive webshop. The webshop adapts itself to suit the device it’s viewed on optimally, whether you order on a laptop, tablet, smartphone or PC. The improvements don’t stop there; The new webshop will be even easier to use, and is designed to help customers quickly find what they’re looking for. We’re currently testing it with a number of customers. If everything goes well, it won’t be long before we switch over to the new version. Initially, this will be a neat, basic version. A number of innovative features will then gradually be added. In the next magazine, we’ll show you more details. What do you like to do in your spare time? I live with my girlfriend in Katwijk, near the sea. I play left back for our local football club. We play in the Saturday Football League with a friendly team. Recently, I also took up a new hobby; Kitesurfing. It’s really fun!

Our customers can benefit from our savings promotion. Keep our magazines in 2020, send us a photo of all 4 ‘Holland stamps’, and receive a real Dutch treat with your order.
