COLOURS OF 2021
Like a visual soundtrack of our lives, colours move in synchrony with us. It’s something you may well recognise from a photo, for example: you instinctively know the approximate year the photo was taken. It’s all revealed by the colours of our homes and our clothing. So, what colours do we want to surround ourselves with in 2021? What do we find attractive, and what makes us feel good? Pantone has already announced its colours for spring and summer fashion in 2021. For our industry, it’s even more interesting to study which colours best suit our interiors. AkzoNobel, the parent company of, among others, Dulux, international market leader in interior paint, has been carrying out extensive research into colour trends for many years. If you’d like to know the results, read all about it in this article.

Interior colour of the year
After worldwide research into colour trends, ‘Brave Ground’ emerged as colour of the year. AkzoNobel describes it as follows:
“Brave Ground brings a bolstering, balancing feel to any room, a perfect base for creativity and change”
Brave Ground is colour of the year 2021
Brave Ground is a warm, neutral colour. The idea is that this colour creates a cosy base, around which other colours and accessories can be used creatively. Accessories and plants really come into their own in the colours of 2021.
Four additional colour palettes Create a wow effect that reflects your own taste with an additional colour palette. Do you prefer calm brown tones, are you a fan of expressiveness with pink tones, do you favour optimism with yellow tones, or are the blue and brown tones of sea and earth your favourites? We’ve made a list of the four additional colour palettes:

Why are these the colours of 2021?
You use colours to create mood and feeling. Much of the research to choose the colours that suit us best this year went into social and cultural analysis. What really matters to us at the moment, and how does that affect us? In addition, they looked at developments in architecture, design and technology. This colour trend research revealed that our home base is more important than ever. We want to feel warm and safe, and live in harmony with our planet. This is how it is described:
Plants in the home in 2021
The research highlights what we’ve come to realise in recent times; a connection with nature and a pleasant environment at home are essential themes. Although we professionals have been well aware for a long time that plants in the home can mean a lot in the context of these themes, consumers are still catching up. In 2021, therefore, more than ever: surround yourself with plants, they’re absolutely essential.
“We’re still going through uncertain times. In 2021, the warm, earthy tones of Brave Ground will allow us to find certainty in the resilience of the ground beneath our feet, encouraging us to move forward and live again, and giving us the flexibility to adapt to the ever-changing circumstances we’re facing.” The colour of the year is therefore a warm, earthy tone. It’s a basic colour with which we feel connected, and which allows us plenty of room to be creative. With colour accents, you can make your own mark, while plants provide the final touch in the connection with nature.
Pantone colours 2021
“The colours for Spring/Summer 2021 emphasise our desire for a colour range that inspires ingenuity and inventiveness; colours that lend themselves to original expressions with colour, and which adapt easily to our new, more fragmented lifestyle.” Pantone also cites flexibility. With the basic colours, you can also make your own combinations. The bright colours are perfect for expressing your feelings of the moment. The Pantone base colours and the Trust colour palette from AkzoNobel have a lot in common. 14 Javado magazine

Did you know this?
The healing power of repetition
Looking at plants helps us relax and recover from stress’, according to one of the conclusions of a team of researchers from the VU Amsterdam (university). A professor in experiencing nature says this is due to the shapes of flowers, plants and trees. They draw your attention without you having to make an effort, because of all the repetitive patterns. For example, the leaves of a plant are all the same, which has a calming effect. The urban environment, on the other hand, is full of road signs, buildings, advertising placards and traffic. This is too much information, and overstimulates the senses.
Living fossil
The Ginkgoales is an order of trees that was very important during the Mesozoic Era (248 to 65 million years ago). This plant genus is now extinct, except for one species: the Gingko biloba. A plant genus that dates back to the era of the dinosaurs is very impressive.
Never forgotten again
Myosotis, the cheerful little plant with sky-blue flowers, is commonly known in many countries as the ‘Forget-menot’. But how did this plant actually get its name? Legend has it that a medieval knight was walking along the river with his sweetheart. While picking a bunch of flowers, the weight of his armour caused him to fall into the water. Just before drowning, he threw the bunch of flowers to his sweetheart, and cried, ‘Forget me not’.
What is Biophilic Design?
Biophilic design addresses the shortcomings of the urban environment. It’s based on the idea that healthy people must have a natural rhythm in a natural environment. Experiencing nature forms the basis for a healthy, productive and valuable human existence. Biophilic design is therefore all about integrating the experience of nature in our homes, offices, schools, streets, and so on. It’s a very interesting subject, and there’s lots of info online if you want to find out more.

Terracotta
Last season, there was a remarkable growth in sales of (aquatic) plants in 24-cm terracotta pots. They are real eye-catchers that look really great on balconies and terraces. Next season, the terracotta range will be expanded: - Canna - Cyperus percamentus - Equisetum japonica - Thalia - Juncus spiralis - Hosta mix - Fern mix - Iris kaempferi - Houttuynia cordata - Heuchera - Thulbachia A natural pond is home to many plants. Underwater plants are indispensable for life in the pond, as they provide oxygen. Floating plants and shore plants provide habitat for all kinds of creatures in and around the pond, and are good water purifiers. They keep the water clear. A pond in natural balance doesn’t need any pumps or filters.

Garden plants
Our garden plant buyer Cees van Soest brings you up-to-date about the best garden plants for this time of the year.
February Garden plant sections already have a lot of interesting products in February, besides the evergreen basic plants such as Buxus and Ilex. Some of the real stars are Camellia, Daphne, Rhododendron, Helleborus orientalis, Salix and Magnolia, which bring beauty to the section and seduce customers. Here are my personal Top 5 for February 2021:
Daphne
Magnolia
Helleborus
Rhododendron
Camellia
Michelia ‘Magnolia Fairy’ I’m excited to give you some info about this sensational plant from New Zealand. The Michelia Magnolia Fairy is related to the Magnolia, as is immediately clear. It’s an evergreen shrub that will grow into a beautiful, full-bodied plant. Michelia’s calling card is its fantastic amazing floral splendour. Flower buds develop all over the plant, and Michelia continues to bloom for months, unlike the Magnolia which only flowers for a few weeks. As an added bonus, these flowers have a lovely scent, even in young plants. Michelia opens the door to a whole range of possibilities, from a free-standing eye-catcher to a beautiful flowering hedge. You can even use these shrubs for topiary.
March In March, early spring begins in the garden plant section. The climbing plant, water plant and fruit tree sections are once again full, and plants such as Lithodora, Scabiosa and Saxifraga add colour. Here are my personal Top 5 for March 2021:
26 Javado magazine
Clematis armandii
Saxifraga
Fruit trees
Salix
Scabiosa
Scabiosa An attractive appearance and a particularly good character; the scabiosa ticks all the boxes. This cheerful garden plant originated from the mountains. Scabiosa is hardy to -20 ºC, and remains green all year round. This plant flowers abundantly, and thrives in full sun. Two types are popular in the trade: Scabiosa ‘Butterfly Blue’ and Scabiosa ‘Pink Mist’. ‘Butterfly Blue’ is characterised by its distinctive violet-blue flowers, while ‘Pink Mist’, as you’ve probably already guessed, is adorned with pink flowers. The Scabiosa is ideal for a rock garden, but I also think it’s a great idea to combine this plant with the perennial border. The plants grow to a height of 30 - 40 cm, so remain fairly compact.
April Spring really comes into its own in April. An enormous range of attractive garden plants is available Acer, Astilbe. Clematis, garden herbs, Lavender, Hydrangea... this list of garden plants popular with buyers goes on and on. Here are my personal Top 5 for April 2021:
Hosta
Gaura
Acer
Lavandula
Garden herbs
Acer palmatum ‘Extravaganza’ The name says it all; don’t expect any shy, retiring behaviour from the Acer palmatum ‘Extravaganza’ . This graceful tree will treat you to an incredible show. The first thing you notice are the striking white and pink stripes on the leaves. With its tricolour foliage, this Japanese maple is a perfect eye-catcher. You can turn an unloved corner in the garden into a treat for the eyes, or steal the show by putting the ‘Extravaganza’ on the terrace in a pretty pot. In autumn, the leaves turn an intense red, guaranteeing a beautiful autumn spectacle. The ‘Extravaganza’ does best in a sheltered spot in partial shade, and it’s very hardy. This slow-growing acer needs very little maintenance.

Grower report
Mark Grootscholten Remy van der Knaap
I’m face to face with a happy grower. We have a pleasant conversation about his wonderful nursery, the eventful past year, and the future. The happy grower is John Grootscholten. He starts by telling me some Westland history.
John Grootscholten
Grootscholten Brothers
“The plot of land on which these modern greenhouses were built has been in our family for centuries. When my grandfather was young, our region mainly grew vegetables and fruit. Westland grapes were well-known, and my grandfather also grew them in special grape greenhouses. When the price came under increasing pressure, he realised he could grow marigolds under the tendrils of the grape vines. He would sail to the vegetable auction on his barge, where he would also simply put his marigolds in the auction. It turned out to be very successful, and that’s how he became one of the first growers of bedding plants in Westland.”
wherever possible. We rented a container to dispose of unsold stock.
How would you describe the current nursery? “Our nursery is a seasonal plant nursery. We have visually attractive products available all year round. The big peak is in the spring, when we have an attractive range of bedding plants in 10.5-cm and 13-cm pots. As you can see, the facilities are modern, so it’s a very nice place to work. We strive to be a reliable partner for the upmarket specialist trade.
Apart from last year, what’s it like to be a grower? “I really enjoy it. We make a beautiful, living product that brings joy to people. Of course, a grower faces many challenges and risks, but fortunately I don’t run the company alone. My brother Mark is responsible for the staff, and partner Remy for the cultivation. I focus on general business and sales. I have no trouble delegating and letting go of things. We also have long-serving staff; some of them have been with us for 25 years.
After 3 weeks, however, trade restarted. All our existing cultivation schemes were of no use, but thanks to a lot of extra work, we managed to get back on track. Fortunately, we never filled up the container completely. The countries where garden centres could stay open achieved record sales. The bottom line showed that we were able to sell almost the desired numbers this year. But the way we had to do it... hopefully never again!”
Having fun is just as important to me as the bottom line. We’re very happy with our company, so we don’t mind working seven days a week in the busy spring. My wife also
We avoid mass promotions with supermarkets. Each year, we grow about 6 million plants.” How was 2020? “In March, trade suddenly came to a standstill, at the very time when we were expecting the starting pistol to sound for our most important weeks. We kept our greenhouses cool to delay propagation and, in consultation with our cutting suppliers, we cancelled orders for cutting material 28 Javado magazine
comes from a family of growers, so she’s used to it. Your range is very wide. How can you master all those different crops so well? “We have a long tradition of growing seasonal products. It makes sense for us to vary our crops, and of course there are certain common characteristics to these crops. Our facilities are also set up for this purpose. For example, we have several separate water basins, each with a certain mix of water and nutrients. We can easily set which sections get which mix.” What’s your vision for the future? “This summer, we got a visit from our neighbour, who wanted to know if we were interested in buying his greenhouses... That wasn’t a decision to be taken lightly, of course, but it did fit well with our vision for the future. I regularly have to say no to customers, or buy additional goods from other nurseries. We want to be able to expand, one example being trio mixes (see box) that are very popular. In addition, my son Rick will also be joining our company.
The sale has been agreed. The existing greenhouses will first be demolished, and then we will build a completely new greenhouse complex. Cultivation will start in 2022, and we will be able to start delivering plants from 2023.”
In the cabriolet greenhouses, both the sides and the roof can be opened.
Sustainability The greenhouses are connected to a geothermal energy system, where water is pumped up from a depth of almost 2 kilometres. The water from this source is very hot. It releases its heat into the greenhouses via a pipe system, before being pumped back into another underground water source. This system provides the nursery with about 80% of its heating needs, completely CO2-free. The nursery also has a completely closed water recycling system, among other sustainable equipment.

Urban Botanic Love for plants
The craze for houseplants had already conquered Europe, but this year love for plants increased even more. In this Urban Botanic update, we look at an interesting sub-trend, and again show a number of special plants. In the previous update, we discussed ‘a touch of pink’, a sub-trend about the interest in pink leaf tones. This time, the sub-trend we’re highlighting is about the beneficial effects of plants.

swarm of ants; always on the move, always stressing. What do you have to do to become plantful? In fact, it’s not difficult at all. Choose some beautiful houseplants, then find the ideal place and the best way to care for them. The rest is virtually automatic. Don’t rush when caring for your plants. Enjoy every new leaf, every new flower bud, the green appearance... basically, enjoy nature in the home.
Plantfulness
More and more people are learning that plants can filter harmful substances from their surroundings, and produce clean air. However, this is only a side issue for enthusiasts of ‘plantfulness’; they experience the calming power of their green housemates. Green is the colour of nature. Green balances our energy, and calms our nervous systems.
“They experience the calming power of their green housemates” What would plants think of us? They also move and develop, but at a completely different pace. Rolling out a new leaf can sometimes take several days. To their eyes, we must look like a

Plants that match the concept of plantfulness well include: Monstera and Alocasia, because of the way the new leaves open so beautifully. Calathea because of the way its leaves move in the morning and evening. Hanging plants, because of their primal, natural look. Scented plants, such as stephanotis or scented orchids.
New ‘tropical treats’ for fans
We’ve seen some amazing new tropical houseplants appear among our growers recently. The plants below are good examples. They are regularly available, and have quickly proven that they’re worthy additions to the range.

Special report
Meet Peter van Plantipp, and find out about an extra dimension in our profession. Plantipp is an important link in our chain, yet the company isn’t a breeder, grower or exporter. So, what’s the story? Read on and find out. We first met Peter van Rijssen about 8 years ago after a hydrangea grower introduced us, The three of us wanted to make the beautiful new hydrangea ‘Miss Saori’ a success. And we did! We even won the prestigious 2014 Chelsea Flower Show award with this hydrangea. Since then, we’ve enjoyed being part of each other’s networks. On a drizzly December day, I arrange to meet Peter, and get some extra info about Plantipp. Peter: “The best way to explain what we do is to start with something my father found out 30 years ago. He improved gerberas, and while the market was obsessing with ever-larger flowers, he improved a mini gerbera: the famous ‘Germini’. To cut a long story short, he trusted the companies he was working with, but promises weren’t kept. Germini was a massive success, but he didn’t get a penny of the millions made with it. To prevent this from happening to others, he founded Plantipp. If you breed a new variety, we’d be glad to hear from you. We specialise in royalty management, licencing management, and promotion. Basically, we make sure that a breeder’s precious creation has every chance of success on the market, and that rights are protected and royalties paid. We do this work worldwide for succulents, shrubs, perennials, cut flowers and soft fruit. It may sound all very corporate, but it’s actually an incredibly fascinating world full of passion and interesting people. Large breeders such as Dümmen Orange, Selecta and Syngenta are well known among most of the people in our branch, but there are also hundreds of small breeders. These are the people with an unparalleled passion for their work. We have a client in South Africa whose life’s work is to breed a pink agapanthus. He has been working on it for

15 years already, and not long ago I received a photo of a bunch of pink agapanthus flowers for the first time! Real innovation is often the product of those breeders who don’t worry about what others think and follow their hearts. This large group of small breeders and hobbyists produce the most surprising results. My role at Plantipp is to be a pioneer and build bridges. I’ve met all kinds of people and studied a wide range of markets, so I’ve developed a keen eye for novelties with lots of potential. Unfortunately, that does sometimes mean that I have to say no to a new plant that I don’t find interesting enough. I get a lot of satisfaction from my work. I’m proud of all the great novelties that we’ve introduced over the years. What I find particularly enjoyable is when a breeder’s creation becomes a success after years of persistence. I know people who’ve been able to build up their own great company as >

work with, and the partnership with a company like Javado also helps to find the right grower and the right sales channel for a new product.
a result of a hobby, thanks to the royalties they receive for a successful product. That’s the very reason why licencing is so important. You must never undervalue the work and costs needed to place a new variety on the market, so I find it disrespectful if growers try to avoid paying licences by illegally propagating plants themselves. That is also part of our work. We closely monitor whether the products we protect are grown illegally. We’ve already had to go to court on various occasions. This brings a lot of negativity, but it’s important that it happens. We can help the breeder with more than just royalty management. Who takes care of the propagation of the starting material? Which growers have the best conditions to grow the product? In which countries? We can coordinate this entire process. We have a large network of growers that we
Last but not least, we also take care of promotion. Good promotion starts with quality photography and sound product information. This can easily be found on our website. We use free publicity intelligently. That’s also the nice thing about working with novelties; you can count on a lot of interest from the trade press. It’s ideal if a breeder has developed a new variety to which a new colour or variety can be added regularly, as it allows us to continually highlight the brand name. Promotion varies from case to case. With the Mangave, for example, a marketing fee is included. The more Mangaves are sold, the bigger the marketing budget, and the more we can promote this product. This goes handin-hand with expanding the range, because there are still a few surprising Mangave varieties in the pipeline! I hope that I’ve been able to paint a good picture

Peter van Rijssen
As a teenager, Peter noticed how much enjoyment his father got from working with a Japanese breeder who loved his work. At the time, Peter already knew that he also wanted to work in this company. After studying, he first broadened his horizons by living and working abroad. He worked in nurseries in the United States and Asia, where he started exploring the local market. Plantipp employs 11 people. Peter’s sister, Kim, also works at Plantipp. Her tasks include rights management and financial management.

of the world of Plantipp. Next time you sell a new garden plant, think about the person who spent years pollinating and testing with endless patience. I enjoy reading Javado Magazine, and I think it’s great that I’m going to be in it. Here’s another scoop just for you: A beautiful new Nandina will be launched in 2021, Nandina Red Light. It’s a must for all those who love colour in their gardens.

About Javado
Monika Witkowska I’m Monika Witkowska. January 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of when I started working at Javado. I was hired to help out with stickering, in other words affixing stickers with the price and barcode on plants. It wasn’t long before I had to learn how to run the sticker department, after a colleague left. I’ve been the manager of the sticker department for many years now. However, that’s not all I do. Javado has given me every opportunity to develop myself, something I’m very happy about. Besides my work in the sticker department, I do the administration of the CCs, I’m the substitute chief for the entire forwarding department, and recently also the account manager for Poland. I’d like to tell you more about it, starting with the world of stickers. A lot has changed over the past 10 years. Now, lots more plants need to be stickered every day, and the number is continually growing. We also offer more service, something we’re able to do because we’ve perfected the department over the years. On a busy day, I manage about 30 people. I still really enjoy it after all this time. I like being the leader, and I enjoy working with all those unusual plants. And, secretly, I like the challenge of stickering 40,000 plants in one day. Less enjoyable is stickering mini cacti and bedding plants in dirty, wet pots, which is almost impossible. One of my big ambitions was to also work in sales for customers in Poland. I’m setting this up at the moment, and I’ve already got some really good customers; shops that are very good at selling unusual plants. Our buyers are always looking for novelties and interesting batches of special plants. They often send photos of them to the sellers. I forward them to my customers in turn, and often receive a response within 5 seconds. It’s obviously great that this is going so well. These plants are often expensive. I think people have really started to appreciate plants, and that we’ll be able to increase sales considerably in the coming years. My busy job at Javado doesn’t leave me with much free time, so fitness does get neglected sometimes. Luckily, I still have time for cooking and baking, my great hobby. I bake a cake every Friday, for example, following a different recipe each week. I specialise in healthy food, so no sugars or anything like that!
