Band Synopses
Wynberg Boys’ High School Pipe Band
The Wynberg pipe band officially started in 2015 under the suggestion from the former headmaster, Mr Keith Richardson who wanted to create a band that celebrated the Scottish heritage of the school and then present it at the 175th Anniversary Founder’s Day in 2016.
Through the tuition of Gareth Rudolf and subsequently Mike Leresche, Craig Johnston (CTH) and Jenette Ritsma (CTH), the band has since become a stalwart of Wynberg culture, performing for rugby and hockey events as well as many concerts throughout the year
The band aims to expand its reach and continue its tradition of excellence. Whether through innovative performances or collaborations with other musical groups, we invite the wider community to experience the joy of piping, the band remains committed to preserving and celebrating the Scottish heritage that is deeply embedded in the school's history.
Nelson Mandela Artillery Pipes and Drums (NMA)
The Nelson Mandela Artillery Regiment Pipes and Drums, formerly known as the Cape Field Artillery Regiment, is a volunteer-based pipe band performing under the banner of South Africa’s oldest regiment, which celebrated its 167th anniversary in August.
Led by Pipe Major Grant Scheffel and Lead Drummer Reece Mcminn, with Drum Major William White on parade, the band proudly wears the Royal Stewart tartan.
The band runs a thriving learnership program for piping and drumming, welcoming learners from all walks of life and ages. You can support the band and enjoy their performances weekly at Mitchell’s Scottish Ale House at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town where the band plays throughout the year starting around 4PM every Saturday - except today of course.
The Drums and Pipes of the Cape Town Highlanders (CTH)
The Drums and Pipes of the Cape Town Highlanders is South Africa’s oldest pipe band, dating back to 1889.
They have a strong connection to the Gordon Highlanders – reputed to be the original military pipe band - who added bagpipes to their drum corps. They continue to play in the Gordon tartan, and our Regiment maintains an alliance with the Gordons’ antecedent regiment ‘The Highlanders’, 4 SCOTS. The band is made up of an eclectic mix of reserve force volunteers and civilians and have performed at a number of leading international events and competitions, most recently the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland.
The band continues to teach juveniles and young children the art of piping and drumming with an ongoing focus on transformation.

Scottish Country Dancers
Scottish Country Dancing is a social form of dancing done in groups. The dancers performing today are from the Lynfrae Club and the Fish Hoek Club. Some are members of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (or RSCDS), based in Edinburgh, which celebrated it’s centenary last year.
They dance Jigs, Reels, & Strathspeys, and today they will be showcasing examples of these. Hope you enjoy the performance.
You may speak to any of the members afterwards if you’d like to know more about dancing with us
Jenny and James
Original Folk duo ‘Jenny & James’ from Cape Town South Africa are two parts of the original ‘Jenny and the Jameses trio’. With a fresh new sound Jennifer Eaves ( guitar & vocals) and James Hall ( fiddle & vocals) weave together new material inspired by their love for folk music, story telling, and Celtic music. Jenny & James have been performing together for the past 10 years in and around South Africa, and more recently have enjoyed performing in the Netherlands & Scotland.
Performing a mixture of original folk music combined with Celtic tunes, this duo crafts a show that takes the listener on a journey through heart felt lyrics, rich harmonies & foot tapping reels
Jenny & James have performed in venues large and small all around South Africa, including festivals such as the Cape Town Folk and Acoustic Festival, White Mountain festival, Barleycorn Festivals, Voorkamer Festival, Taste of Darling Festival, opened for Johnny Clegg on the Holland leg of his world tour, and were invited to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019.
