the n book, Raise Your Game by Jenny Handly and Ga\ in Cow Icy. published in 2006, the authors use Jacque Kallis as an example of omeone who lives hi brand. Talented but modest. he exudes confidence in his own ability, yet he till pos esse the humility ofa truly great player. Hi main spon or, Sonex. maintains that he repre ent all that is good in their brand as well. The ame goe for the Wynberg Brand. We like to tate that anyone who comes onto our Campus can feel its energy a we urge the boys to 'live' the brand in all they do. What make the Wynberg Brand different from other schools? years should have all of the above as hi mission .tatement for life. Al the beginning of the year, the staff went for two days to Robben I land on a StafTDevelopment weekend. The main topic of di cussion wa the nece ity to build relationships in all pheres of chool life in order to promote our Brand and lo increase learning. "Rules without Relation hip' Rebellion" is a mantra which all familie and chools can take to heart. Throughout Lhi. year, the thrust has been to build relation hips in the cia room. in the tutor groups. in the Ilou cs, in the port teams and in all extra-mural acti\ ities. Helping pupils to learn is a leacher's core bu ine , but the critical factor for sueeess i a teacher' optimism and enthu ia m, enabling him or her to see every pupil a an individual. ehool in all it facet must be a place of discipline and structure, but mu tal 0 be a place of laughter and energy. It is the quality of the e relation hips whieh u tains individuals, families and ports team when the going get tough. Relation hip were sorely tested during the Teacher' trike in the econd lcrm. B) its \cry nature a strike is divisive and this prm ed to be the ca e as this trike divided teachers. it divided tcacher from parent, it divided teachers from their employcrs. If any benefit was gained. it wa to ho\>"the general populace that the teaching profe Ion IS under threat. If the i ues of poor alaries and indifferent condition continue to drive leachers away from the profession, then the con equence for education and for South Africa itself arc dire. I commend our Governing Body for placing teachers at the centre of the 200 school budget There are many 'nice to have' in chools, but committed teachers of quality arc essential.

he following teachers left Wynberg at the end of the third term. Amongst them they ha ve gi ven fifty two years of service to tbe school!

Mr Dave RusselJ began teaching twenty years ago. It was also the year in which Neil Eddy was Head Boy. IL seems the whcel has turned full circle as Dave's replacement next year in his post of Academic Director is the same Neil Eddy. In Dave's tirst year at the school he took the 3rd Cricket Xl, the U 15CfD rugby teams, one of the squash Super League teams and acted in the stafT play, Trial By JUlY. He took over the Accounting Department in 1991. This Department has consistently produced outstanding results at all levels. Dave was also a dependable, good, effective Junior Maths teacher. No boy in Dave's class dared not do his homework - there was order, and learning took place! Ultimately, Dave became Director of Academics when wc created the Director posts and under his guidance we have seen innovations such as the Weekly

www.wbhs.org.zaI5

Pink SJip Draw, the establishment of Bridging the Gap and theAt Risk programme. Cricket was also an area where Dave could not be stumped. He graduated to First Team coach with many successes, most notably the first over cas cricket-tow' undertaken by Wynberg when wc toured Barbados in 1994, winning the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy on offer. After a number of years at tbe top, Dave accepted tbe new challenge of moulding together all Under 13 cricket side from a number of our feeder junior schools that do not play cricket. However, it is for squash that Dave is possi.bly most well known. During this time, he has brought home the ational Top Schools' Trophy on tbree occasions and leaves squash in a strong position. In 1991, Davewas given the reins of the U l5Arugby side which included Jacques Kallis and Jake Boer, and had an outstanding season, winning every match and conceding only 4 tries in the entire season. He has coached numerous other rugby sides and regularly refereed matches on Saturdays, even when fully involved with squash. Dave leaves us to take up a post at his old school an opportunity he felt he could not pass tip, and he leaves behind a hole in many areas. He is one of the old breed of schoolmasters - dependable, reliable, hardworking, ethical and a good teacher. We will certainly miss his attention to detail, his high expectations of boys and his methodical approach. Mr Dave Scbenck.

At the end of the third term Dave took up a well earned promotion as Deputy Principal at Pinelands High School. Davc i a Wynberg man through and through. He did his schooling here, played 1st XI rugby in 1984/5, and was made a Prefect in 1985, his Matric year. Dave went on to play WP U20 rugby. After graduating from UeT and completing his military service, Dave taught at Queen's College for two years before returning to Wynberg in 1993. During his time with us, he has made his mark as a Geography teacher and rugby coach of note. He has been House Head of Rhodes and ended his Wynberg career as Director of Discipline. This is a portfolio designed to make its holder one of the least popular people in the school. It says much for the way that he handled this portfolio that he remained one of the most liked, respected and popular members of staff and that the general view, on his departure, wa lhatthe school discipline would suffer. That it has not, is also a tribute to the legacy that this fair minded and thoroughly decent man left behind. As a friend and colleague, Dave is one of the best. [f one went to him with the most difficult of problems, one was certain to get empathy and sympathy and he was thorough ly good company at a braai or party. Mr Eric Lefson has taken up a post with the Golf Foundation after eleven years of teaching at Wynberg. He came to Wynberg in 1996 as a Maths teacher. His commitment to the school since then has been quite incredible. He has coached Rugby, Hockey (including being MIC in 2004 and 2005), Golf(MJC since 1996) and Cricket his real passion (15C, 2",1 Xl and I" Xl since 2000). He was a highly organised and competitive Head of van Riebeeck House this year and the boys did all they could to beat Littlewood for him, but had to senle for second place. Eric also ran the General Knowledge Society and ha. led nwnerous Trivial Pursuit Quizzes 0\ er the years. He earned a reputation as a Maths teacher who insists on high standards. His maths classes and cricket teams responded in kind and many Wynberg pupils owe a debt of gratitude to the fact that Eric Lefson would not allow them to accept second best.

A character of note, he was not a man to suffer fools gladly and all boys who had contact with him would have experienced his wit and sharp tongue. He nevertheless inspired tremendous loyalty, especially from the cricket fratemity. The only people who may be plea ed al his leaving teaching are his wife, Christel and two daughters, Annika and Kara, who may now see a little more of him. We wish him all the best. Ms Thé Santi joined the Wynberg staff in 2002. She has decided to leach English in Korea. This is quite a change for her but there is no doubt that the traits that she showed us at Wynberg will stand ber in good stead in Korea. She is an outstanding teacher, dedicated and professional to the core. She headed the Afrikaans Department so efficiently. always keeping a cool head and never losing her good humour. She ran Junior Tennis throughout her time at Wynberg and wa also the teacher in charge of Table-tennis. She is already sorely missed.

Mr Clive Sandenburg. Owing to the demise of Woodwork as a subject at Wynberg, we have. unfortunately, had to say goodbye to Clive, who has now retired from teaching. He is a teacher of the old school, and our los i also education's lo s. Wc wish him well. Mr Riaan Crous

has accepted a post at Western Province Preparatory School. He has been at Wynberg for two years and during this time he has taught Maths and coached rugby. He has also been a hostel master at LittJewood. Wc thank him for his contribution and wish him well. We thank the following prut time teachers for their contribution to Wynberg:

Mr Clyde Broste .. Already retired from permanent teaching, Clyde came lo Wynberg in 2002 and took over as the Head of the English Department when Leon Kruger left at the end of that year. However, his post was as a part-time teacher, teaching Grade Il AS Levels and a Grade 12 class each year. How lucky we were to get him. The most fitting way to pay tribute to this remarkable man is to quote an extract from the farewell speech made lo him by fellow English teacher, Rob Henning: As a men!OI~Clyde always challenged his apprentices to rise above themselves. Barrv Eml1ls is a fine example of C(vde :s work as he is proving lo be Cl l'e~J'capable and competent subjecl Head. As jor myself, last year C(l'de approached me lO assist him with the A-Level English class. which was a class hal1d-picked by Clyde hilllsel{lo participate in co-educational El1glish classes with our sister school. s

Mr Peter Fiske came to Wynbergseven years ago to fill in for justa year. butat the end of every year he was asked to stay on. He is now retiring properly and will be travelling in the US and ew Zealand for tbe first three months of 2008. Peter began his teaching career in township schools in the 70's, which tells us volumes about his character. He is a man of impeccable principle and has an unwavering passion for education. He brought vast amounts of knowledge, wisdom and experience with him to the English Department and produced tomes of well-researched notes on literature and poetry for the benefit of his colleagues in the English Department. Along with hi experience came an intelligent and quirky sense of humour, evident in his relationships with colleagues and boys and in the assessment of boys' strengths and weaknesses. Wynberg and the English Department in particular, will miss this fine teacher and wonderful man. We wish Peter the best of luck on his travels. We hope he catches many trout and sells lots of honey in his well deserved retirement. Mr Johan Louw agreed to come out ofretircment to help us out in the Geography and Life Orientation Departments from April to December, for which we sincerely thank him. Mrs Debbie de Jong has moved to Gauteng. She was responsible for putting Arts and Culture on the map at Wynberg and will be sorely missed.

Mr Piet Philander, another teacher ofthe old school, ha gone back into retirement after filling in gaps in the Afrikaans and Geography Departments this year. We thank him siocerely for his contribution to Wynberg.

hose words ofAbraham Lincoln, juxtaposed with the Wynberg Boys' motto "Supera Moras" (Never give up) exemplify the ethos that make thi school worthy ofemuJation. Mr Rjchardson, staff, parents, learners and the Class of 2007, as I begin this valedictory address, I wish to pause and pay a special tribute to my late father, Ismail Razack, an academjc, scholar and an icon in his own right for being such a wonderful role model. My dedicated mother, what would the world be without you? Inow understand the meaning of a mother, for you have gi en me the sense to understand life. You are very special and I thank you for always being there. Lastly Ithank my unstinting supporter, my sister Bushra. I bid farewell to my chool with nostalgia. I remember moments of great fun, joy and understanding and Ileave with the knowledge and wisdom cultivated within the corridors of this fine institution. I would be failing in my duties jf! did not extol the virtues that set Wynberg Boys' apan from other schools in (he Western Cape. Ishudder to think that J was very nearly not acceptcd into Wynbcrg Boys'. Very few schools have the stunning Tablc Mountain as a backdrop, beautiful, landscaped gardens. an almo phere that instil discipline and humility. Its core pillars of academics, culture, seJVice and sport provided us with a sense of balance, enshrined in each one of us the values of duty, honour and commitment. and provided the building blocks for a life beyond the sheltered boundarie of [he school. Our Principal, Mr Richard on, has shown intelligent leadership in driving us to new heights in terms of educational excellence. His wisdom, knowledge and understanding et the goals for this Class of2007. My McNaughton Hou c Head, Mr Taylor, is an exceptIOnal person. He interviewed me on my arrival and sct me on this greatjoumcy offulfilment. Sir, thank you for the confidence you bad in me. The teaching staff arc dedicated and con cientious and went the extra mile so that we completed the joumey, nol in despair but with hope and success. Their support. encouragement and motivation were instrumental in the arrival of each onc of us at our destination. Mr Doidge, your generosity and respect for humanity i phenomenal. You have made our matric year a very enriching and memorable one. However I still question your ob ession with Scrooge McDuck! Mr Leresche. you havc redefined the word 'genius'. As nerdy a it may seem, you are the reason for my love of Maths. Thank you for your continual support. It was great having you as my tutor. The contribution of the finance manager Mr Tim Gordon, the secretaries, assi tants and support staff, cannot go unmentioned. They are truly anchors, seldom seen around but always there to save. The school Governing Body has played a pivotal role in the governance of the school and acted as a liai on bctween the institution and the parents at large, creating an environment conducive for us to grow and nourish. We arc fortunate to have some of our Old Boys' in here today. They are a ricb part of our pa tand have contributed greatly. The members of the Ladies' Association continue to outdo themselves in setting new standards for refre hments and good food at all our functions. It is the combination ofall the e factors and the quality ofthis family that sets Wynberg Boys' apart from olher . chool . Being Head Prefect \.\as a buge challenge. It was difficult to fulfil the respon ibilities and expectations of the large blazer hwnbly, bul my wise mother made cel1ain thaI she bought my blazer one size too big large to remind me that I should never become too big tor my blazer. The prefect were loyal, dedicated and motivated. It wa incredible working with them. I am the first one to acknowledge thaI we came from diverse backgrounds. bul it was this diversity thaI enabled us to understand cach othcr and create that spirit of camaraderie. A special thank you to Mr. Schenck, our master-in-charge. His ml1uence, no-nonsense approach and commitment made him a wise counsellor. ILwa a privilege to serve under you. Our sincere good wishes on your appointment as Deputy Head Ma ter of Pineland High School. My thanks and appreciation to Mr Richardson, and the teachers who helped, guided and equipped us to channel the re tIe enthusiasm and imagination of the Wynberg men Congratulations Sean Aldridge on your appointment as Head Prefect for 2008. I wish you and your prc fect body Godspeed.

Class of2007 Every day we ask God to "gil'e us this da)' our dCJi~vbread" - and e"cry day, God pro'lded and blessed me with my daily necd , which include you the Malric class of 2007. \tty friends, we have one more challenge ahead of us. Work hard in the days thaI follow. The weetest feeling orall i the exhaustion after a hard day's work. when you kllO\\ you have given everything you had and even a liule you didn't have. When/he SII/1rises over Africa, the anlelope Imows it musI runfaster ,hlll/Thejasrest liOIl 'nt is to survive. Unfortunatel y we must say goodbye but we wi II all have memories that wi II a Iways connect us to Wynberg, and we should cherish them. We will remember the days when heroes were made in classes. We will remember the Monday momil1g Maths periods and the thrilling challenge of the lunchtime soccer pile-ups. We will remember the Matric Dance and friendships made. We will remember the affectionate nickn~mes that we gave the teachers and how we forever rebelled again t them. We wi II remember that it was in Wynberg tbat wc learnt that brotherhood is an enduring, endless cbain. We will remember tbat special bond of unity as we chanted "Oh Men of Wynberg!" and also "In lhe begilll/ing! There was war!" and we will remember today. Although, we may never see each other again, the school will never be forgotten. It will always be our alma mater, our home away from home, an affectionate and caring persona who bas left her mark on our lives, forever. Ihave been given the honour of presenting, to the school, the Matric 2007 gift, which comes in the formofa wailingareaju t be ide the front gate . This will behave shmbs and benches and enhance the beauty of the C11001. Relaxing in the Wynberg Garden of Eden will be a wonderful way to end the school day. Soon we will proudly sing the school song for the last time. Feel the love and strength ofWynberg's embrace as she prepares to bid u farewell. Sons ofWynberg, tbc world awaits you - step up and make a difference. A real difference! We salute you Wynberg.

A huge hole will not only be left in tbc Academic department but also in Dc Waal House. he sport has grown this year, with the 2nd Team playing a number of other schools' fust teams in thc f11"stterm. We have about 30 boys on the Chess Ladder and many playing at breaks in the library. Our two best players at second team level were Paul Cupido (won 5 out of 8) and Lyndon Jacobs (won 4 out of7). We have also had a few afternoons this year when we played friendly games at our Girls' School in an endeavour to promote the sport at both schools.

ynberg ha a core of extremely talented debaters at both Senior and Junior level . Unfortunately, the sea on was somewhat curtailed by the tcacher 'strike and a number of potentially key debates had to be cancelled. Both the junior and the senior teams failed, albeit narrowly, to qualify for the knock-out stages of their competitions. But, despite the omewhat premature exit of both our teams from the chools' competition, there were everal highlights this year. Richard Mandy, in matric, was awarded Colour in recogmllon of outstanding ervice given to debating and Mu 'attham Cadie, in his first year of debating, won three consecutive Best Speaker awards. With the talented debaters that Wynberg has at its disposal, there is real cause for optimi m for the 2008 season. I thank the boys for their dedication and commitment during 2007.

n Saturday 15 September. a group of pupils from Wynbcrg Boys' and Girls' schools worked together to make a small difference in a community that desen·es so much more. The moment wc arrived at Entshona Primary School. we were welcomed by tiiendly staff members. Everyone began working straight away, painting classrooms and sanding desks. spurred on by the singing of the school staff. A few of the pupils were there to lend a hand. We were amllLed to sce them moving desks twice their size. At the end ofllle day, \...hile their principal was shaking our hands. it saddened me to know that so many Wynberg pupils will never understand what it is like to be so poor.l hope that lhe bond that Wynberg and Estshana Primary ha\ e forged will last a very long time.

T

he dedication of our adult students in aLlending classes in sometimes difficult circumstances (including the wettest winter in decades) and working hard at improving themselves; their friendly and positive attitude in classes, their supportive approach to fellow tudents, win tbe admiration of all who come into contact with them. The new office has been a wonderful boost to the school which now truly bas a "home". Three good signs outside the scbool also give new students a better chance of finding us. Many thanks to Soopee Signs. Tbanks again to Wynberg Boys' High and in particular Mr Larry Maser for his tireless work on our behalf. This year our office received a computer from WBHS and we thank Mr Mariana Badiali for his role in facilitating this. We thank Mr Richardson and all the staff of WBHS for the gracious way in which they host Cwesi as a night school. Mr Brewis again effeciently saw to it tbat tbe school \-vaslocked up. and for that we thank him. MrGraham Lashbrooke, an innovative educator. oon to leave to work at a school in the Southern Cape, was our gue t speaker at Founders' Day and provided inspiring words for our students. James Matse spoke movingly about his experiences as a student and being supported by Cwesi's teachers and his employers. We enrolled 121 students in 2007 with 90 signing on for matric and 27 in the Abet division. The SRC hoped Cwesi could acquire a coffee and tea vending machine but it is far too expensive. Instead, the Student Council will inve tigate buying an um to provide hot drinks (or soup). Wc want to find ways ofrewarding student!> for braving Cape Town's wicked winters. Cwesi was delighted to welcome new centre manager. Mr Errol Collin • at the beginning of the year. A fonner principal himself, he has brought to the job a rigorous approacb to reeordkeeping and a splendid system offiling- very necessary with the amount of correspondence received from and required by the Education Department. Wc were fortunate to have Mr Geoff Burr to replace Mrs Lee Louw during the year in the Numeracy class, ....hile Charmaine du Plessi (AfrikaansAbet) and icola Goemans (Comm Maths Grade II) kindly volunteered their service. Other newcomers were Mr Glynn Hewson (Grade 11 English) and Mr Gordon Taylor (Biology). new taxi service to the east was introduced) and a variety of private donors, among them Mr John Gaynor. We were pleased la welcome former SA-Club project co-ordinator Ms Johanna Wagenknecht on to our Governing Body. . Constantia Catholic Church also kindly sent the school a generou donation. Our major fund-raiser was our Exclusive Book Book-Selling. Tn the third year of this PR and fundraisIng exercise we raised the bar and collected more money than ever before. Therese Michaels was her usual efficient selfin organising the manning of the table and we thank IJle management of Exclusive Books (Constantia Village) for allowingus to raise funds and awareness in this way. 0

The main focus for IJle Governing Body, led by chainnan Mr Reggie Bro\'m, has been the finalisation of the mission statement and goals .. Much di cus ion en ued on the challenges of the new National Senior Certificate (replacing the matric). Mr Maser wa most helpful on thi matter. Members were: Messrs John Young and Errol Collins (Cwesi) Mr Larry Maser (WBHS), Mr Reggie Brown (community), Mr Michael Weir (church). Mes rs Duncan Beeson and lumiah Mukclldi (students), Mr Errol Rossouw (former students), Mrs Therese Michaels (teaching stal1). Our chief challenge is the yllabus, in particular the NSC. The GB wants Cwesi to offer relevant subjects and our aim will be to provide students with subjects that will help them get jobs. This might include a Grade 10 or Il certificate in a subject such a Tourism. Each orthe J SC grade certificates has validity in itselt: although of cour::.e some students will still go on to attain tbe final goal ofa complete Grade 12 SC certificate. Given that the Matric exam i to be written (in June) until the year 2011, Cwesi will be under financial pressure, baving to offer both NSC and matnc. We hope to a sist our matric tudents to finish as soon as possible so as to free up funding for tbe new courses. Small Abet das e (historically Afrikaans, Xhosa and umeracy) may have to fall away or be offered only if a volunteer can be found to teach these dasse. English Abet will continue ao; before. As ever, sustainable funding remains a major goal. We hope to find a corporate that will take Cwesi under ils wing-ora very generoul> patron.

The role of the CounscJling Department The counselling office al WBHS continues to be a busy corner of the chool a place where boys can seek a qUiet space to (hink or talk. criscs can be contained and parents can share their worries. concerns and hopes relating la their sons. support. The role of the school counsellor is then to monitor the boys' functioning at school and liaise with both parents and other professionals ln the field. Tn this way, the Counselling Department also acts as a resource or referral centre. The school counsellor is a member of the School Social Workers Group which is a network of school social workers who meet monthly for case discussions and the presenting of papers. This year psychologist, Gary Koen, spoke to parents on the role of parents in the life ofthe adolescent. Mr Henk Eicllllol'll

include substance abuse, bullying behaviour, trauma, depression, & Term I, 2008 aggressionfimpulse control, sexuality, ADD/ADHD and behaviour problem in the classroom. The focus of counselling offered tends to revolve around supporting and developing a boy's coping skills, as he deals with emotionally challenging circumstances both at school and al home. These school and family "survival skills" are essential life skills in equipping the boy to cope with those situations over which he has no control, and in helping him invest his energies in situations where he can inOuence positive change. We focused heavily on bullying this year, as we recognise that "bullying is a potential problem in any environment where children and young people gather together" (Bealbu/(ving Too/kil/Ol' Schools, 2003). This focus included increasing our vigilance on bullying al school. improving and streamlining our response to bullying as wel! as raising awareness of this issue. A large laminated Anti-Bullying statement was placed in every classroom in the school. We also updated our Bullying Policy accordingly and this can be found on the counsel Iing websi te.

he Counselling Department offers a fieldwork placement for two third year social work students. This year we were fortunate to have Jewaahier Petersen and Natalie Moore placed with us. These students were instrumental in running a social skills group for a small group of Grade 9 boys, which focused 011 being a male teenager and all the related issues that brings. The group allowed the boys a chance to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences within a fun and safe context. The students have also contributed to the life of the school in ___ .a terms of their community work project which formed part of the Grade 10 Life Orientation curriculum. The aim of the project was to raise awareness and respect for cultural diversity specifically, as it relates to religion and spirituality. They are also involved in individual counselling and have shown great skill and commitment to the boys they have worked with. It is our sincere hope that the Counselling Dt."P3rtment will continue to provide a valuable and relevant service to the boys and parents ofWBHS and that we may grow in both numbers and expertise. he 2007 sea on has been our most successful ince our tart in 1989. Our U 19's had convincing wins again t traditional ri\als SACS and Rondebosch and embarked on their first ever tour to Grey High (PE), where they only lost in the final to an excellent Grey side. Tuna Amutenya wa~ awarded the first basketball Blues. There is huge enthusiasm and optimism among all the players, the U 16's and U 14's are showing great promise and 2008 is certain to be even better than 2007. The end-of-scason braai featured a 'Scott Heida Five' \-s a 'Hamish Heida Five' as a tribute to the

T

he 2007 Cricket season was certainly the longest in the school's history. Sixty tbree is a lot of games. There ~ere f~ur tours (which included an ?~erseas tour and a~ eleven day internal tour), SiX festivals and two 20/20 competitions. If one considers we played a term without our captain and that some of our experienced players missed large chunks of the season, this team can be very proud of its record. The highlight of the yearwas the win against a very strong Grey College team in Bloemfontein (a very rare feat). There were also the performances against the local schools. We were unbeaten and, but for one wicket , would have won all of them. The only negative was that we lost three 20/20 games. I must admit that r can't get very excited about the game as a lot ofit goes against what school boys need to be taught at this age. However it is here to stay and we will have to embrace it. Our batting was, to say the least, shaky. No-one averaged over 25 and we were never convincing. Too few vere willing to do the hard work and the batters who did seemed to get heavily bogged down. Tlus was magnified by our poor running between the wickets. There was only one century made (Dreyer against Bishops) and a few

50's, but generally our batters lacked application and concentration. The bowling was often our saviour, especially as the bowlers did not have much to work with. We had two very good holdjng bowlers in Cameron-Dow and Dods, with good support from Fenton. We sometimes lacked a genuine strike bowler, although at times both Lok and Botha looked promising but had injury problems. The fielding got better and by the end ofthe yeartbey were probably an aboveaverage fielding side. My overriding memory will few stars, maximised its was top notch. This led to many a hopeless situation would have rolled over. In at least another ten games, know tbe meaning of the the whole team. The boys they djd. I thank the parents especially Mr Oliver for the for cricket; Mr.KnowJes for Messrs Inglis, Keating and various tours; Riaz, who practices and our very Lawrence. Finally I thank the players for a wonderful year, both hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Good luck in your cricket lake you.

Well done to can be proud of what for their support, many hours she gave up his help and guidance; Coombe for helping on added value to the reliable scorer, Craig on and off the field. r future, wherever that may

Dalin 01iver ©-Honours. In tenns of pure stats Dalin did not have lhe kind of year he hoped for. In many ways he was still the most important player in tenn of what he adds to the team both on and off the field. As a captain, he grew tremendously and was deservedly named WP U 19 captain. It will be interesti.ng to see how he develops after school because I believe he adds so much value Matthew Fenton (vc)-Honours. Matthew had a very good matric year, finally showing his true potential. He was the team's leading all-rounder. and tbe only disappointment was his failure to convert one of his 50's into a century. Matthew also stepped successfully into the captaincy when Oalin was injured and achieved the rare feet of 150 caps.

Gareth Dreyer-Blues. Gareth started tbe year poorly, because of poor health but had a fantastic fOU1thtem1 which saw him average over 60 and fini h with a chanceless 121 in the final game against Bishop. Gareth has the potential and talent to play good club cricket after school if hc really wants to and 1 hope he make the correct choices to push himself.

James Cameron-Dmv - Honours. James continued to develop as the year went on. He took over a 100 wickets for the second consecutive year and his fielding showed a lot of improvement. One challenge he will need to overcome ifhe wants to become a top bowler is to be able to bowl well when the wickets are unhelpful. Selected for the WP Ul7 team.

Geoff Dods - Blues. Geoff continued to improve this year. He has really turned into a fine bowling all-rounder, who has the ability lo bowl marathon spells. Who will forget Affies? His performances have resulted in deserved selection for the WP U 17 side. Geoff ha a fine cricket brain and will captain the tol team in 2008.

Michael Botha - Colours. After a year plagued by injuries and loss of form, Michael made a strong comeback in the fourth term. He picked up over twenty wickets in the final few weeks and his 6/18 against Bishops was of the best fast bowling we have seen for Wynberg in the last few years.

David Geffen - Colours. David had a mixed year. His batting has not really gone anywhere, but his bowling has come on and he has picked up many valuable wicket" with his left ann scamers. IfDavid is serious about bis cricket he will have to work on his fielding and general fitness.

Jason Meredith - Colours. This was a year where nothing much happened for Jason. When he got a good start he would give it away. He also struggled with his feet early. On the positive side hjs attitude was fir t ratc and ifhe keeps working hard he could have a big final year.

Ryan Lok - Blues. Ryan had a strong first term, although he bowled a little short altimes. Unfortunately a back injury resulted in him not playing in the fourth term. He was selected for the WP U17 side.

Clinton Botha - Colours. Clinton was initially selected as a batter but had to start keeping when Abdullah broke his finger. He has very good hand eye co-ordination which allows him to overcome a lot of his technical problems. Ifhe wants to continue to develop, he will have to improve hi mental approach and not get down on himself so easily.

Kieran Goss-Colour . Kieran got better as the year went on. He is a top fielder and his batting improved as he reali ed that not every ball can be hit out oflhe park.

Michael Wood-Colours. Michael was an in-between cricketer who has ability, but wa never able to firmly e tabli h him elf.

never really able to bowl consistently and thus failed to build any pressure. It resuJted in him losing his place.

rant meade. went on t overseas tour as a development player and after a good tour played most of the fourth term in the I'" team. He showed some very good signs and I bel ieve a very bright future lie ahead.

Abdullah Solomons. Abdullah broke his finger early on and this resulted in him missing most of the year.

ooking at tbe statistics, one would think that this was a pretty succes ful team - and in many ways il was. There are some really good players in the group but there are a couple of things they need to do urgently or they are going to struggle later on. They need lo take responsibility (ownership) for their performances - too often the blame was put at someone else's door. They need to listen to and act upon advice given - the same mistakes were made throughout the year. Disappointingly, wedid nor win any

Of the Saturday games again t our traditional rivals. We tied with Bishops in a last-game thriller and beat them in a 25 over pre-Hilton tour friendly, but lost twice to RB IIS and once to SACS. Highlights were playing really good cricket at Hilton, beating Affies in an all-day declaration game and winning the 20/20 at Bishops beating both SACS and RBHS. r wish the boys well there are certainly a couple who could contribute substantially to Wynberg cricket.

tie. We had played 10 full games as well as three 20/20 matches and an invitation game. The top perfonners were; Grant Edmeades (ave 36), Matthew Fenton (15 wickets - 210 runs); James Cameron-Dow (19 wickets); Daiyaan Garder (15 wickets) Both Edmeades and Garder were still under IS! The non-cricketing highlights were the nighttime stroll around London and the exhilarating experience of visiting the Flight Centre at Farnborough arranged by John Kearing and his brother Mike who is an instructor there. Not only were we privileged to be invited there, but every ODe of the boys (including the tlrree bigger boys!) was afforded tbe opportunity of"landing" a plane at Cape Town Internationa IAirport. The boys managed to get their own back atus for giving them a hard time on tour, by colluding with the flight in tructor to set us up to fail. Imagine coming in to land and being (nervously) cocky about wbat looked like a perfect descent (and landing), only to have a plane coming suddenly straight across your flight path and an instruction to "pull up" bellowed in your ear by the flight instructor. The thought ofhaving killed all your passengers is a traumatic onc and I shall remain scarred for life. We shall remain forever grateful to all who made this trip possible and once again wish to thank our English hosts for their generous hospitality and friendliness. Cricket is a game which lends itself lo creating and nurturing life-long friendships and bonds were made on thi tour.

fter many years of languishing near the bottom of various leagues. OUT teams took a giant leap forward this year and were in contention in both the A and B leagues right up to the last week of competition. The year started with a trip to Affies for their Invitation Tournament and, although the whole team was not available, those who went gained much nd from the trip. In the annual match again t Grey High. our I~ and 2 teams were completely outplayed at Royal ape. However .. e drew lhe ingle against Grey a few months later, during the 6" Cape Schools' Golf Week. This week has certainly become the highlight of the year and wa made special b_ the amazing feat of Jason Horn. lIe and his opponent halved the 9 at Simola. both getting holes-in-one -a first in golfhistory! rhe I Team played "\ery well for mo t of the local league. There were two poor performances against SACS and Bishop "ben w let our elve down badly. otherwi e the boys played well if one considers that both Bishops 3nd R ddam arc rank d among the top 5 in South Africa. Thi ho" ho\\ strong the league is. The highlighb \\erc the two game again tReddam, which, on both occasions, came down to the final putt and the \\ in again t Rondebosch was only our econd win against them In the la t twenty encOtmters. It wa pleasing to beat the lightly weaker sid . com IDcingly and gam mruomum points. Joshua de Klerk played number I this year - no mean feat for a Grade 8. He won lOofhis II game .. He really has the talent and temperament to become a top golfer. At number 2. Chn ,tian Helmbold won JO of 12. He is \ cry competitive and as he gets stronger he could become as good as any junior player In the pro\ ince. Playing number 3 was Grant Linie. who. after a poor. tart. came back strongly at the cnd of the ea on. I Iecnn beat anyone on hisday but will have to work on his consistency. Jason Horn had a solid year at number 4. winning his fir, t 10 games on thc trot. Unfortunately he fell away in the final stretch. Again it is a maller of consistency - he is far too inconsistent. umber 5 Craig Little. has a lot of talent. but needs lo learn to play a lot more methodically and not n1sh into things without thinking. Charl Everts came In nc\ .. to golfthi year and showed some good ·igns. but he will have to v..'ork on hi body language as you can tell from 300 meters away ho\\ hi match is going.

.~!!!!I-'

The 2 Team. after a slow tart in the league, pUl together 3 string often \ Ictories lo \\ in the outhem B league and quality for the Provincial Finals. liere they met De Kuilen at Mow bray and \\ ent do\\ n 4.5-1,5. because of a couple of short, missed puts on the tinal green. Well done on a great !'leason! RlPJ...-aIJ!""'" The: 3nlTeum had mixed re ults but ended in the upper halfofthcir

league.

I thank all lhose ",ho helped make 2007 such a memorable year for Golf al Wynberg: Messrs Helmbold. Everts and lIorn for the outhcrn Cape tour. Mr Lilllc for helping to orguOIse the Grey match al Ro)al Cape; Messrs Helmbold and De Kkrk. for supporting every \1onda)' afternoon in some of the worst golf weather imaginable and Mr Peter Know le for taking a leam on Mondays and helping" ith the admin. Lasl year I aid that 2006 \\as a watershed and that good times lay ahead for golf. The performance this year have proved me nght and with none of our top 12 lea\ ing. wc ha\ e a good chance of winning local and national tournament'. I wish the golfers \\ ell. The laS! 12 years have been most enjoyable and I will be following their progress \\!lh keen Illtcrest.

In the Astro and Turf Knockout Cups, we did extremely well: 1" Team - Winners: 2- j vs Rondebosch 2nd Team - Winners: 2-0 vs Table View U16A: Lost in semi final on penalty flicks to Bishops U16B - Winners: 7-0 vs Tygerberg High School U14A: Lost to SACS in frrst round U14B - Winners: 5-0 Table View Thjs season would not have gone aJlead had it not been for the tireless efforts of the hockey staff and coaches. J thank them for giving our teanlS their time and expertise. Thank you lO Mr C Sieben, our resident pro, for putting in so much time and passion; Mr L"Jigger" Halkett and his taff for ensuring we always had a top class astro to play on; Mr P Van Schalkwyk and all his Fir t Aid boys for doing duty voluntarily at our home matches; Mrs J.Stokell, our astro Administrator and all parents for their continued support and help in the tuck-shops. Special thanks to Mr Peter Knowl.es, our school Sports Administrator, who does so much ofthe behind the scenes admin work, often without praise ortbanks. He certainly made my job a lot easier. Wynberg Boys' High School can be proud of the resulls il produced this season. It is fantastic to see that we remain in the top 15 Hockey schools in tbe country. It has been a privilege to have been a part of hockey this year. he scoreboard makes ~e reflect on team ~saebi.. evements. The players are quick to poiru out tbc Founder's Festival as the low pomt oftheJr season. They came away with only one victory, but] was pleased with tbc way they bounced back after a very frustrating five days and showed a fighting spirit in every game. They were never really outclassed, but needed the bounce of the ball to go their way. They went on to win the International Festival, beating St Benedict 's in the final 3-1. They successfully defended the Knock-out Tournamenl. defeating a very determined Rondebosch side 2-1 in extra time. Darren Murphy and Bradley Venter represented the first learn in over 100 matches, a fantastic achievement. If trophies are the measuring stick, then this side was top . The team tended lO be rather slow off the tarting blocks. Thi will have to change next season. The midfield took a while to get going, but once on top they remained there. A natural midiielder is still needed in the side. The seniors do not seem to be producing one so wc may have to wait for thejuniors to come through. Mid fielders were better going forward than on the retreat. Finishing in the circle improved but still remains a problem as it puts more pressure on the defence. The team went into defensive mode too easily. but the defence gave a very good account ofthemselve and improved as the season went on. On a very positive note, the technical improvement at short comers was phenomenal. The players made an excellent effort during official and their own unscheduled practices. A vigorous training plan in the off-season should lead to an improvement in both the U 18 and U 16 ides in 2008 and beyond. Seven players from the squad offifteen remain with us next year so the future looks bright. However. a more universal pattern needs to be instilled in the players. Caplain Darren Murphy gelS the credit for lhe way lhe side took up the challenge. Physically a strong player, he carried himselfwell on and off the park. He was a true Wynberg ambassador and well backed by lhe senior players. Ilhank Messrs D Ramage and C Sieben, who gave advice and encouragement throughout the season, and our sponsors. Matrix, for their continued SUppOlt. Thanks to the players whose dedication and efforts resulted in a fantastic season.

s r reflect on the season, Ibecome convinced that a soap opera script writer would have gained a rich source of material from spending time with the UI6A team. All the elements of a successful soap opera were present in abundance. The team's aU-star cast ensured there was plenty of drama, suspense and tension, and their 'x-factor' ensured that they becameoneofWynberg'smostsucces rul ide . After a sluggi h start that included a heart-breaking penalty-flick defeat to Bishops in the first round ofrhe Knock-out p, the boys leamt the valuable lesson that the team is more important than the individual. They learnt too, that winnjng becomes a habit and once the e lessons had been learnt, there really was no stopping them. The team ended tbe season with eight consecutive wins - a winning streak that included victories agalÏnst every major hockey-playing school in Cape Town. TIle 5- I drubbing of Bishops added weight to the notion that the team finished the season as the top-ranked U 16A side in the Cape Town area. There were also a number of player higblights. Brinsley Powell was selected for the S.A. U 16 squad, while Mattherw Anderson, Shannon Boucher and Wade Scholtz represented the \V.P. U 16 team. Shannon Boucherscored a phenomenal numberofgoals: 27 in 14 matches. My thanks to Mr Craig Sieben [or his much-valued advice and help throughout the season. The team's success was a reflectionofhjs input. My thanks to the boys for giving their all for the team throughout the sea OD. There is absolutely no doubllhat a bright future in the game lies ahead of them.

was very privileged to have this gro.up of extremely enthusiastic and passionate young men in my side. The season started Wlth a loss to Grey P.E. - the wake up call needed. The next matches were fought with greater determination and put some wins under our belt. Unfortunately we just could not get the better of an expelienced SACS side, but, after having lost 6-2 in the first match against SACS, we went down a mere 1-0 in a hotly contested game at the end orthe season. Iwas, at times in awe of the technical hockey they produced. Much of our mid-field play was often far superior to our opponents. Our biggest and most frustrating downfall was our inability to score goals. Not putting the ball in the back of the box after great build-up play was disappointing. We were very proud that Louis Mbuyu. Luke Bodenstein. Guy Thain. Wasecm Omar and Michael Mulder were selccted to represent Western Province U14 Proteas. This bodes well for the future.

A big thank you to Louis Mbuyu, one of the keenest and most passionate hockey players I have come across. He had the ability to keep the team positive and hard working, even at the 6am practice sessions. Team spiri t was wonderful and never seemed to falter, even afler a loss. The boys had learnt that in order to be a great winner. you need first to be a good loser. My relationships with this group will be there forever. Thank you for a great season guys. You played hard, you had fun and your positivity and great sensc of humour made the season one of my best yet.

Together we produced a "blueprint" for Wynberg rugby and arc slowly reaping the rewards. A great boost has been the opening of the gym. Improved fitness has been evident as a result. Wynberg again hosted the now annual rugby festival attended by Noord Kaap. St Johos. St Davids, St Stithians, Bishops and Graeme College. The festival was a great success and popular among the participating schools. We hope to maintain the tradition and friendships with these schools. The lower teams again led the way by producing good resulLs. First team performances were crratic. but there were signs of improvement and, with consistency in the structures and many of the Grade 11's returning for another year in the team. expectations are high for 2008. Wc are proud of our three Western Province representatives. Mo Schrcuder represented WP Academy and Zingisa Ndiki and Luvo Ndabanillzj were selected fortheWPU 16 side. A special thank you to all the parents and friends who gave up their Saturday mornings to support Wynberg rugby. Thank you to all the parents who ran tuck shops. made bacon and egg rolls. cooked burgers or organised the coffee and tea 011 a Saturday morning. Your hard work did not go unnoticed. We hope that Wynberg rugby can bui Id on the momentum of2007 and carry it into the new season.

he team started the season well with a good display al the Newlands Rugby Day and then performed well at the DurbanvilleToumament. They played some good mgby and walked away from lhe toumament with 2 wins and ready for a tough season. A tough season it certainly was as, first up, they faced a strong Grey side, which had them hell-shocked after 20 minutes. However, this match like so many of the otbers, showed their true character as they refused to lie down and clawed their way back into the match. They did Ulis for much of the season, battling for every point and result, often unlucky to lose some very close contests. Throughout the year they battled to score tries. Their inability to do so proved to be their Achilles Heel. In the second term they recorded good wins over St StiUlians and Bellville Tech, but then lost their way and slumped to a series of losses. Towards the end of the teml the team pulled it together with especially good perfonnances against Paarl Gym and Bishops. The real change in

fortunes, however, came at Cape Schools' Week when the boys spent much needed time together and found ome real foml. After a tough match against Selborne, they bounced back with a workman-like win against the FNB Invitation Team and then possibly their best perfonnance of the season was a 36-3 win over Muir. Most impressive about these 2 matches, however, was the fact that the team scored 6 tri es in each. The team returned full of confidence and expectation and faced a lough Lein ter Schools' team. We lost narrowly but then recorded a close win over Monument rd Park. The only blemish in tbe 3 term was tbe loss again t Paul Roos. With only the boys' school opponents left and the team determined to set the record straight, they managed to tum around the big defeat against Paul Roos and beat Rondebosch 9-6 away from home - a huge achievement considering that it was the first time many of the boys in the first team had ever beaten Rondebosch. The term ended with some really good performances against Bishops and SACS. but the team was just not able to press home their advantage in either game. Although it was another difficult season for the I \I XV, there were certainly some encouraging signs towards the end of lbe season. 1 wish the boys all the best for tbe future and hope to see them back suppolting future )" Xv's.

he team started very well with a good tournament at the Durbanville Rugby Festival., the highlight being a most impressive 31-0 victory over the highly rated Ermelo team. As a result, the players had high expectations for the year but unfortunately found themselves on the wrong end of a very close match three times. Their results, however, were still impressive. Even more impressive than their results was their style of play expansive and free flowing rugby, always entertaining. They scored 68 tries in 18 matches, an average of almost 4 tries a game. The boys settled into good structured play and began maturing as a team. The U16A's were special because of their closeness and friendship. It was a reaJ pleasure to coach such a happy bunch of boys. Certainly their best win was their 29-19 victory over Rondebosch, the team turning around a defeat from earlier in the year. As an exhibition of quality rugby, the match against Monument Park stands out, because the team ran in no

fewer than 7 tries in a game that was called eight minutes short,

with Wynberg threatening to score a couple more. Luvo Ndabaninzi and Zingisa Ndiki, were both selected for WP U16. The leading point scorer was Kieran Goss with 140 points while Zingisa Ndiki was the leading try scorer with ]6 tries in the season. We are expecting good things from this team in the future. Iwill be watching their progress closely over the next two years.

he side had a mixed but enjoyable season in their last year of junior rugby. Spirit never wavered despi te the shock 0 fa mid-season slump wben they lost four grunes in a rOW.ll hurt succumbing to our three local rivals and the away game to Paarl Gym was a lesson in the physicality that our boys have to endure in their encounters with the Boland schools. Other losses were al the hands ofTygerberg, Klerksdorp and Paul Roos. with the Stellenbosch side scoring in the final minute to bring them a fortunate 12-11 victory and handing us our only defeat after the holidays in the 2nd part of the season. There were, however, some great victories which will live long in memory and remind all involved that this side is capable of playing great rugby. Stand-out performances were: away at Boland Landbou in trying conditions; the comeback at home against Grey (PE) and fine victories over Bishops and SACS. The final game at SACS earned the side their longed-for 'team of the week' award. Their performance had been near perfect. Final score 29-3.

T

From the coaches' perspective. this was a successful season. At times boys played oul of position whilst old styles were adjusted and new patterns of play expetimcnted with and put ill place. The success in the econd ha.lf of the season showed the team's willingness to learn and adapt and we look forward to seeing how they develop as they enter senior Illgby. The boys work hard and with their natural ability, they are capable of flying the Wynberg flag high in future. Keep at it and never give up!

his season was one that coaches and boys will re.member for many years. The boys had plenty of flair and talent and a fair amount of brawn. However, we needed to concentrate quite heavily on practising technical skills such as rucking and ball retention. The boys developed significantly in these areas. The most pleasing aspect of the season was seeing how boys from different schools and backgrounds were able to merge into a unified team tJlat showed guts when they were down, never gave up and played for one another week after week. There is a core group in lbeA and B teams who will make Wynberg very proud in years to come.

be South Peninsula shooting club, in tbe Voortrekker High School hall with 20 members, 14 of whom are from Wynberg, has had a very successful year. We have excelled in the 6 Western Cape Competitions, S.A. Postal League and the final two W.C. trials. Our Club again played a major role in hosting competitions and Imust thank our parents and pupils for their keen run

interest and support. Our boys shot regularly and participated in tbe 3 Position Sporter shoot (prone, standing and kneeling) and in the 10m Olympic discipline (standing only). We did very well against strong opposition and it is only because we have competed with keen disciplined, determination that we have achieved our current high standards.

In the seni.or division Nicolette Grungling (VHS) represented South Africa in Great Britain and was chosen to represent W.C. A Senior at the S.A. 's held at Ermelo during September. uch of our success this year is thanks to the dedication and hard work of all the coaches. Enthusiasm and constructive practices have been the order of the day and the boys have worked hard and always tried to improve their game. Once again, the First team beat Rondebosch I which won us the right to compete in the national event for the fourth year in a row. Competing against the top schools from all the other provinces, we finished a disappointing sixth out of ten participating teams. Early on, the First team again took part in the annual St Andrews Squash Festival in Bloemfontein. This year saw the inauguration of the Wynberg Stayers' Squash Festival in which schools from across the country competed over a weekend. At junior level, Andrew Fourie is congratulated for his selection to the SA Under 14 Team which toured to Malaysia during the year. To perform vreHin tbe leagues. To get the best standard of tennis possi whicb entails entering in the highest leagues To maintain a reasonable standard of coaching. To ensure that every boy wbo plays Wynberg High tennis leaves it a better player than when he started. ID the light of these aims we ha\"e done rather well. Particularly pleasing is the fact that there are boys playing in the 71\ 81b and 91h teams who ,,'ere virtual beginners a year ago. Brert Kriedemann was an excellent captain, weU supported by vice-captain Bradley Venter. Jïm Armstrong, our tireless and enthusiastic coach, has been the major player in our success. My thanks for the excellent work done by s Santi unfortuantely left us at the end of the 3rd term, Ms Heskwa and Messrs BrasIer and Thompson. aterpolo saw an all round imprO\clllmt this season. Boys had a change in attitude and took training scs:-.ions more seriously, eager to turn results around. Mr Duvld TIltman 'Wus appoilllcd'--""~:":f!"~';~~=1 professional coach amI his energy and enthu iasm is already paying off. Thi:. year Wynberg hosted the fir·t U 15 tournament of its kind in South Africa for the Ian Mclliar Cup. All games were reffed by professional referees and the tournament \A. as a huge success. The U 19 squad is also undertaking a first for \i ynbcrg waterpolo - a tour to Australia, which will serve as pre-season training lor Ihe boys. The team is young and enthusiastic and I am sure they will make the mos! of this opportunity.

ater polo at Wynberg continues in a state of transformation as we try to regain our place amongst the province's top schools. The team did their best to lead the school back into this elite company and although the gap \.\.a'i narrowed, it ""asn't enough to gain \ ictories over the top schools. The effort in the I" lenn was enormous ""'ith the boys training hard in the holidays. and throughout the term, recording near losses against RBIIS, Bishops and Reddam. They managed to beat Westerford twice. Paul Roos andAuckland Grammar from ew Zealand and showed great character in the two draws with Grey and Paul Roos. This allowed us to set a realistic target of a quarter final berth at the annual SACS Festival in September. The SACS Festival is a three day feast of water polo attended by 20 oflhe best boys' schools in the country competing for the title of 110. I team in the land. Here we played some of our best polo and although we didn't achieve our goal, we showed we can compete with the cream of SA's scJlOolboys. The 4'" term was very tough as wc lost 4 of ourmatrics who had decided not to play and concentrate on exams. This disappointed me a little as they were still part ofWynberg, had a commitment to the team and nceded fonns of exercise to keep their minds activc. However, they are entitled to their choice. The flip side was lhat this did allow us to build for next year. However it did make results difficult to come by. Well dOllC to the three matrics (McAlister. Punt ami Makaiser) who played on.

Ian McAJistcT_(c) - Solid player with a wide range o[skills. He works hard at his game and always gave of his best. Selected for WP 'S'; Blues.

Angelo l\IIakaiser (v.c) Goalkeeper with great reflexes and very hard to score against in a I on I situation. Unlucky not to be selected for WP: Colours.

Brian Punt - Strong swimmer who occasionally drif1s oul of the game but when he is focused he can be lethal. He displayed this in the match against Paul Roos where he scored 5 goals. Selected for WP/Boland invitation; Colours.

146 I www.\.\bhs.org.za

Justin Rowles - Has lots of talent. A strong swimmer with a powerful shot and can mark al the back. Ifhe gets mentally tougher next year will be a force to be reckoned with. Colours.

Jaryd Oliver - A calm. talented player \-vhocao play in a variety of positions. He needs to strengthen his shot and will then be an even greater threat in the water. Colours.

Alex Verlaque-Napper -A strong young man with a very powerful shot. He just needs to get himselfinto better scoring positions and the goa)swill follow. Colours.

Sebastian Verlaque-~apper -A competent swimmer who didn't use his power and strength enough in the water. Colours.

Cameron ThomsoD Another good swimmer and strong boy whose casual approach to practice prevented him from reaching his potential. He had a very good SACS Festival showing grit and leadership. Colours.

Derek Sackville-Scott Colours.

- Calm and consistent. he was a regular for 2 seasons.

Russel Steyn - Most improved player this season and continues to develop his game now as a 'hole man'. He is exceptionally strong and will be a handnil for opposition backs for another two seasons. Colours.

Logan Oliver - He is learning new drives and gets a lot of kick-outs. When his passing/catching game develops he will cause opposition defenders even more has le. Colours.

Jonny Halliday A confidence player who will improve when he really believes he belongs in the first team. His hands need \Vork but his training ethic is positive so he will get there. A good team man.

ller a slow season, the boys got !Tonger with each game played. The highlight for the team was a very succe sful tour to Durban where they played in the We tville Boys' Water Polo Festival. The boy played with great spirit and came back having won the Festival and been unbeaten throughout the week. Thanks to the parent who havt' been very supportive, watching their ons play at every opportunity.

the ball up on the wings and acting as excellent distributors. Michael Bradley, Brandon Scholtz, Kyle van der Vyfer, Jarryd Kirkby, Pctcr Jessop and Louie Mbuyu all made contributions. There was good team pirit and enthusia m but the team lacked commitment as a whole which resulted in very few wins. 1 am, however, certain that this team has a lot of promj e and with more effort at practices the boys will start to reap the rewards of hard work and begin to love the game.
