Influenza Update 29 April

Subject: Influenza update 29 April 2020 Kia ora koutou, Demand for influenza vaccine continues to be high. At the current rate of distribution, there will be a gap (likely next week) before the next shipment arrives (due for release 12 May). While members of the general public can now get vaccinated if their provider is ready for them, we know that some are still working through vaccinations for their at risk populations. We are asking that providers in this position continue to give priority to people aged 65 and over, pregnant women and other at risk people who have not yet been vaccinated, and defer appointments for the general public. Some mass vaccination programmes, such as for non-essential workplaces, will also need to be deferred until mid-May. It is important to note that the risk of influenza is low at this time of year, and the current travel restrictions reduce the transmission of influenza and other respiratory illnesses. Influenza levels do not usually reach winter levels until late May or early June. A short delay in vaccination is unlikely to put anyone at greater risk of influenza at this time of year. We are aware that 100,000 doses of Afluria Quad are awaiting release (was expected for 28 April but now expected 29/30 April 2020). This may mean that providers in the North Island see their orders go on back order while we wait for this stock to be released. Stock of Afluria Quad Junior is almost exhausted. A small amount of stock of Afluria Quad Junior has been retained for high-risk children. Instructions to order are available on HCL's website. The same process will be put in place when Afluria Quad stocks run low next week to ensure we can maintain supply to those at highest risk. We ask that you continue to work with providers to make sure stock is where it is most needed. PHARMAC is continuing it's efforts to secure additional vaccine stocks to meet the unprecendented demand for influenza vaccine this year.
