The following statement from the Minister of Health was tabled at the PSAAP meeting on the 26th March18: The Minister has been clear that his priorities are to improve equity of health outcomes, especially for MÄ ori and Pacific Peoples; and to have the whole health system working together more effectively to improve wellbeing. For primary health care, this means reducing inequalities and improving health outcomes for all New Zealanders with a focus on providing high quality, accessible and affordable primary health care services. It also means considering how primary health care can more effectively contribute to how the whole health system functions. The Minister supports the PSAAP process that we are engaging in today, and over the coming months. While we do this, the Minister is taking advice about the review and new initiatives from DHBs, the sector – including some of you here - and his Ministerial colleagues. As part of the advice, there will be consideration of the broader primary health care system, including the role of nurses, midwives and community pharmacy. Government and Ministers are still working through the shape and form of the package of initiatives as part of the Budget process. The Minister has asked the Ministerial Advisory Group to consider and provide advice on health system performance. The Minister is considering the place of the primary health care review in this context and is likely to be in a position to provide further details about this in mid to late April.
