CEY ADAMS American, b 1962Cey Adams, a New York City native, emerged from the downtown graffiti movement to exhibit alongside artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He appeared in the historic 1983 PBS documentary Style Wars, which tracks the rise of subway graffiti in New York. As the creative director of hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons’s Def Jam Recordings, he co-founded the Drawing Board, the label’s inhouse visual design firm, where he created visual identities, album covers, logos, and advertising campaigns for Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Notorious BIG, Maroon 5, and Jay-Z Adams has participated in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, MoCA, and more. His practice involves dismantling various imagery and paper elements to build multiple layers of color, texture, shadow, and light. Drawing inspiration from ’60s pop art, sign painting, and comic books, Adams’s work focuses on themes including pop culture, race and gender relations, and cultural and community issues.

French, b 1966
A provocative figure in the world of street art, Mr Brainwash practices an irreverent brand of appropriation characterized by the use of copyrighted images from history, popular culture, and art history. The artist subtly alters the picture or its context, mischievously undermining the tone of the source material. Brainwash, a pseudonym for Thierry Guetta, is known for producing massive spectacles to display his art. He came to prominence through mounting large-scale public projects in his current home of Los Angeles and as the main figure in the Banksy-directed film Exit Through the Gift Shop His work hinges on the idea that anything is possible in his practice. “Art has no walls. Anybody can be an artist,” he says. “Art has no rules. There’s no manual.”

Malene Heerup was born into a family filled with Danish and internationally renowned artists and grew up with an innate ability to observe subtext, details, and motifs. “The greatest education in my life as an artist comes from growing up in a family full of three generations of artists. It was the most natural thing to relate to art by observing them at work and by listening to their conversations They stimulated my artistic vision, enabling me to see what lies behind and beneath. They breathed life into minute details transforming them into larger than-life experiences and emotions that slowly allowed the motifs to take shape visually and emotionally,” the artist explains. While living in NYC and attending the famous Parsons School of Design Malene found her artistic identity through the influence of the city, which included hard work and confidence in transcendence. “ … New York taught me to work and believe in wonders I draw my inspiration from a subconscious state where observations are molded by joy, humor and a desire to communicate using motifs, colors, shapes, and compositions to tell my story”. Malene is a prolific artist, producing many works of art each year. She is as comfortable in her studio as well as producing commissioned works for individuals and companies She is often invited to participate in art events as a producer or as an ambassador of art.

GARY JAMES MCQUEEN
BritishGary James McQueen was first introduced to the fashion industry by his late uncle Alexander “Lee” McQueen, who mentored and inspired him to be the artist he is today. Gary James McQueen’s first job was working in a print and typesetting firm where he learned about print production and taught himself to use illustration software Needing a break and a new job, he was invited to cut his teeth in fashion at Alexander McQueen’s menswear department where he worked for seven years and was promoted to head textile designer. “The way Lee built stories and how he combined ideas from different sources really influenced me He taught me how to build stories in a structured way.” As head textile designer for the Alexander McQueen MRTW, Gary James McQueen developed a niche of optical-illusion textile design, constantly pushing himself and the boundaries of what could be achieved using a 3D canvas as the basis He worked alongside Alexander McQueen up until his passing in 2010 and was entrusted with many personal projects, including the chrome skull artwork, which has become iconic as the face of the exhibition Savage Beauty: Alexander McQueen commemorating his life’s work. A love of storytelling has always been core to Gary James McQueen’s creative vision, and art provides a medium from which he can harness it. His work has been exhibited at London’s V&A, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and at art galleries on both sides of the Atlantic to critical acclaim

PHOEBENEWYORK

PhoebeNewYork, an alter ego character for Libby Schoettle, first came to life in collages created with found objects, including vintage photographs, magazine pages, clothing, as well as old books, record covers, and the occasional iconic pop art element. The artist is drawn to materials that have been owned and handled by others, materials that have been touched over time and that will remain intact over time (or not). From the streets of New York City to Philadelphia, Los Angeles, London, and Berlin, Schoettle reveals her own vulnerability, raw emotions, and witty observations through PhoebeNewYork‘s dark and funny explorations into love, feminism, political independence, and finding beauty in the mistaken. Libby and Pheobe have been featured in publications such as New York Magazine’s The Cut and Nylon and have been the subject of fashion collaborations with Victoria Beckham, Dr Marten’s, and Lululemon, among others

French, b 1951
Blek Le Rat, born Xavier Prou in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, was one of the very first graffiti artists in Paris and has been described as the “Father of Stencil Graffiti” Blek was first introduced to graffiti during a trip to New York City in 1971 where he was inspired to bring the style back to Paris, adapting the stencil as a more fitting technique for French architecture He is best known for stenciling a giant graphic image of a rat all over Paris in the early 1980s, which to him symbolized both freedom and the dissemination of art through the city as if it were the plague. Blek, who has influenced generations of urban artists around the world, boasts a subtle social commitment and considers his images as a gift he gives to the city. His works often represent solitary individuals that can be encountered in the urban space–women, children, the elderly, and a diverse range of contemporary characters. In a desire to bring the people of the city closer to art, he quotes the great classics such as Caravaggio, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. “I would like to bring the characters out of museums to return them to the people of the city.” His street art has appeared in cities across the world, and he has exhibited in New York, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, and beyond

JM Rizzi is a Brooklyn-born and Dallas-based artist working in large-scale murals, public sculpture installations, and mixed-media canvases. A gestural expressionist since he started writing graffiti as a teenager in 1990s NYC, Rizzi’s ever-growing conceptual practice explores the multitudinous angles to abstraction through illegal art forms and movement He has painted murals from Rockefeller Center to Boras, Sweden, and Shenzen, China. American, b 1965Bob Schneider is an artist who transforms found visual media into thoughtprovoking works of art that challenge the viewer's perceptions of contemporary and popular culture. He juxtaposes iconic figures from comic books and other mass media and places them in everyday situations, leaving the viewer to interpret the meaning of the artwork By appropriating old and valuable books, often intended for mass consumer consumption, Schneider creates something unique and personal for each viewer. Schneider's art invites the viewer to participate in the interpretation of his work, creating a personal and individualized experience for each person The seeming simplicity of his pieces allows the viewer to focus on the larger picture and meaning behind the artwork. Schneider grew up and studied fine art in Germany before moving to the States where he was a fine arts major at the University of Texas In addition to his work as an artist, Schneider is also a celebrated singersongwriter. His music, like his art, blends different elements and influences to create something unique and engaging.

DOUG ARGUE
American b 1962
Known for using thousands of individual letters to create immersive large-scale paintings, Doug Argue works from the idea that “letters, like atoms and chromosomes, are basic building blocks that can be taken apart and constructed in new ways.” His imagery is granular, evoking primordial evolution and celestial matter, as in Genesis (2007), where a deep central vanishing point gives the impression of warping through outer space, a dynamism “meant to be physically experienced.” Describing the process behind the work, Argue said: “I took letters from the book of Genesis and after distorting them in Photoshop, put them back together into a big bang. The shifting cosmologies of time past and time present filled with myth and reality feels a bit like the world I live in.”

American b 1963
Stanley Casselman is a New York-based artist whose sumptuously calculated surfaces are motivated by a sense of awe and wonderment in the intangible spiritual elements of our being. Casselman rose to art-world fame in an unusual way: he answered the critic Jerry Saltz’s call for a knock-off Gerhard Richter painting But Casselman’s practice goes far beyond that He was an established painter of geometric abstraction long before he started creating Richter-like works using a 10-foot squeegee. Since then, he has elaborated on this painting style, making it his own as he searches for logic through abstraction “Each painting is its own visual story that transcends explanation through language,” Casselman has said. “The process and the result [are] emotion and energy put forth in its rawest and purest form.”
Stanley Casselman Luminor Moment (PP 1/8), 2017 Silkscreen on archival watercolor paper 30" x 22" $1,650ROBERT COTTINGHAM
American, b 1935Though Robert Cottingham is recognized as a photorealist, his thoroughly-detailed works of pre-digital Americana teeter on the edge of abstraction. Cottingham portrays mid-20th-century signs, typefaces, manual cameras, railroad boxcars, and mechanical components what he has referred to as "tools of the Everyman" in dynamic compositions marked by intensified color and light His childhood visits to Times Square serve as the origins of his fascination with signs, as the artist himself has explained, "I think that’s when the seed was planted, when I saw the kind of activity going on above the ground level" Driven by an obsession with the exact geometry of his subjects, Cottingham's method involves a series of steps such as sketches, photographs, shapes mapped onto grids, and model construction. His sharp, at times monumental canvases celebrate and accentuate the forms of his subjects, all while avoiding nostalgia Influenced by figures like Franz Kline, Edward Hopper, and the New Realists, Cottingham draws inspiration from various sources.

JANETTE BECKMAN
British, b 1959
Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for The Face and Melody Maker. She shot bands from The Clash to Boy George, as well as three Police album covers. Moving to New York in 1982, Beckman was drawn to the underground Hip Hop scene. Her photographs of pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, and Salt 'n' Pepa, are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Museum and the Museum of the City of New York. Beckman is a pioneer in the world of visionary collaboration as is evident in her photographic portfolio of creative artists, most of whom are now legends in their respective industries When Beckman chose silkscreen, another collaborative process, to produce her newest body of work, Gary Lichtenstein embraced the opportunity to provide an environment that would encourage her exploration. Beckman’s suite of prints is reminiscent of her classic photographs but entirely unique by virtue of the choices she has made in terms of color, saturation, and texture. Each piece tells a story and Beckman’s interpretations are, in fact, found on each, in her own, unmistakable handwriting.

When she became the first female staff photographer at the New York Post in 1977, she set out to capture the beauty and ingenuity of graffiti art and the innovators behind it, immortalizing their work in photographs of painted subway cars and urban walls Cooper’s images validated and legitimized graffiti writers at a time when few members of the art establishment celebrated their work. Her hit 1984 photobook Subway Art, made in collaboration with photographer Henry Chalfant, came to be known as the graffiti bible, providing a template for aspiring street artists. She has also produced bodies of work documenting breakdancing cultures and spontaneous street memorials to the victims of 9/11.

Coming of age in the Bronx in the 1960s and ’70s, John “CRASH” Matos first picked up a can of spray paint at the age of 13 to cut his teeth as a graffiti artist by “bombing” the subway trains in the New York City rail yards. He has not stopped since. His bold, blocky signature CRASH greeted subway riders in the 1970s and ’80s, New York’s economically dire, artistically fertile days By the 1980s, with the embrace of his work by galleries and at the urging of his friend and contemporary, Keith Haring, CRASH was translating his explosive outdoor murals to the canvas’ more contained plane. His iconic imagery has inspired corporate partnerships with companies including Absolut Vodka, Fender Guitars, SoBella Handbags, Levi’s, Tumi, and Morphik.
Chris “DAZE” Ellis was born in 1962 in New York City He began his prolific career painting NYC subway cars in 1976 while attending The High School of Art and Design and he remains one of the few artists of his generation who made the successful transition from the subways to the studio. Ellis’ first group show was the seminal “Beyond Words” at the Mudd Club in 1981and shortly thereafter, his first solo exhibition was held at Fashion Moda, an influential alternative art space in the South Bronx. Ellis’ work has been placed in the permanent collections of many major museums including The Whitney Museum, NYC, The Museum of Modern Art, NYC, The Museum of the City of New York, The Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven and Addison Museum of American Art at the Phillips Academy, Andover.

American, b 1959
Ron English coined the term “POPaganda” to describe his trademark fusion of high and low imagery, mixing superheroes and comic strips with art history iconography in his prolific and ubiquitous paintings, billboards, and sculptures. English has imagined a vast (and still growing) roster of characters, including MC Supersized, his obese fast-food mascot that was featured in the documentary Supersize Me (2004), and Abraham Obama, a mash-up of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents. He is best known for combining expert draftsmanship with a cynical, humorous critique of American culture

American, b 1970
Shepard Fairey is an American graphic artist and social activist who blurs the boundary between traditional and commercial art through type and image, communicating his brand of social critique via prints, murals, stickers, and posters in public spaces. “Art is not always meant to be decorative or soothing, in fact, it can create uncomfortable conversations and stimulate uncomfortable emotions,” he stated. In 1989 Fairey created the André the Giant Has a Posse sticker campaign, featuring a stylized image of the wrestler André the Giant. This project was the foundation for his seminal Obey series, which helped to push Fairey into the public spotlight. The artist is perhaps best known for his Hope (2008) campaign, which portrays a portrait of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama, in red, white, and blue.
