A Welcome from Winchester Welcome to the most exciting sporting event in Winchester this year. Spectacular, thrilling, fast and furious cycle racing can be expected from today’s Criterium event. Winchester City Council’s Sport and Physical Activity and Tourism teams together with Cycle Tours UK and British Cycling have been working hard to bring back a cycle race that was organised in the city in the 1980’s. Be prepared to see some exhilarating races at close quarters, sprinting out of Winchester’s historic street corners and intensive competition in the last lap for the finish of each race at the Butter Cross. We are delighted to be a part of this “Formula One style event for Cycling”. Winchester City Council is keen to promote cycling in the city and throughout the district in every way. We want to get as many of you on your bikes this year and enjoy cycling, be it for necessity or pleasure exploring our wonderful lanes and quiet roads in and beyond the city. Thank you for supporting this event. It is hoped that the Criterium will raise the profile of Winchester as an ideal cycling destination for residents and visitors.

Introduction Welcome to the Winchester Criterium! Today is a celebration of cycling and I hope that you have all had a great day out. Winchester City Council are leading by example and have invested wisely in a sport that has a huge following in the area. Winchester is very lucky to be surrounded by wonderful countryside, only minutes away from the city, which no doubt helps for the sport to thrive in Hampshire. We have seen how cycling is a dominating Olympic sport for the British, with a couple of the British team coming from the local area. Rob Hayles and Dani King have had (and are having) highly successful careers in cycling. With the increase in membership in the local cycling club, VC Venta, I hope that one day events like these can produce more Gold medal talent. This event is all about capturing the imaginations of young people, and to help propel them forward to progress in the sport. City Centre Criteriums don’t come cheap and we have to thank Winchester City Council and Winchester BID for stepping up so quickly to help us fund it. We also need to thank our sponsors Holiday Inn Winchester, Hendy Ford Winchester, Shentons Solicitors, The Country House Company, Judes Ice Cream, Vankru Cycles and British Cycling for being so generous with their support. I hope you have a fantastic evening watching the racing and I hope to see you participating next year! Graham Dawson Business Development Manager Cycle Tours UK organise cycling holidays accross Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, the Cotswolds and the Isle of Wight. They are also a highly experienced sports events company having worked with company’s such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Carluccio’s, RBS, Springboard, Hotelympia. If you have a sports event that you would like managed then please contact us through the e-mail below.

THE FORD In 1852, a small bicycle repair shop opened in Whitchurch with the name Hendy above the door. If anyone had thought to ask, surely no-one would have guessed that 150 years later it would still be going strong. The beginnings may have been humble, but today the Hendy Group employs 650 people, selling cars and commercial vehicles across more than 20 locations as the largest dealership group in the Southwest and the oldest Ford dealer in Britain. And it’s still a family-run affair – the current Chairman and Deputy Chairman are great-grandsons of the company founder F.A. Hendy, and more Hendys are spread throughout the ranks. Naturally, the business has diversified from selling Penny Farthings to well-todo Victorians. The Hendy Group now holds Ford, Mazda, Kia, Honda, Ford Commercial and Iveco franchises stretching from Devon to West Sussex. These dealerships are full of friendly, knowledgeable staff immersed in the Hendy way of doing things: putting the customer first and making sure – as per the Hendy byline – it’s all about you. You’ll find that kind of attitude permeates the whole business. Every department (and there are a lot) is firmly focussed on attention to detail and making sure the customer always comes away smiling. 150 years’ practice does a lot for a company philosophy, and with Hendy Heartbeat, the in-house customer survey

8

programme, the company learns how to improve itself with constant change. With so many departments, the Hendy Group has a huge wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw on. Whether you’re looking for expert servicing, affordable parts, aftersales support or accident repair for your car, the Group can take care of you. Businesses are catered for as well, with vehicle hire, commercial vehicle sales (Ford and Iveco) and fleet management offers as well. One local man even went to Hendy Power to source an engine for his road-legal tank. When Hendy Group claim ‘all makes and models serviced’ they’re very serious, and you can find used cars from practically every manufacturer at the award-winning Hendy Used Car Supermarket in Exeter. Speaking of awards, the group as a whole was bestowed with the WhatCar? Trusted Dealer Award, an accolade granted by the famous magazine only to dealers where customers are sure to get the very best service at a fair price. It’s a mark of faith in the Hendy name, and a claim that there are no nasty surprises and no hidden catches, but only service of the highest calibre. But enough about the Hendy Group – after all, the only way to know whether they’re the best is to see and drive the cars, talk to the staff and try them for yourself. www.hendy.co.uk/Ford.aspx 0844 5399679

Where will My Journey take you? My Journey has been providing residents and workers across the county with advice and information about a range of travel solutions that can help you to save money, improve your health and wellbeing and reduce congestion in the areas you live and work. Throughout the summer, and the whole of next year, we are hosting events across Hampshire, visiting homes and working with schools and local businesses to provide expert advice on new ways to get around. Look out for cycling events and services, including bike maintenance workshops, FREE bike safety

checks, and led rides. If you haven’t been on a bike in a while then why not freshen up your skills in a personalised cycle session for just £5. This summer, we launch our unique online journey planner for the Hampshire area. Simply enter your location and destination and the planner will show you a range of ways to get there, including the duration of the journey, cost (in petrol), calories burnt and carbon points saved. Where available, it also provides real-time information for buses and trains. If cycling’s your thing find out the fastest or quietest routes to your destination.

Anthony McCrossan & Rob Hayles Anthony McCrossan grew up in Winchester, attending Montgomery School and Peter Symonds College and was a member of VC Venta as a young cyclist. The previous Winchester Criteriums were promoted by his father Hugh, and during one event, he stepped in as race commentator. Little did he know that after a few hours sitting on top of a double-glazing van in Winchester he would end up forging a new career. Anthony is now a cycling commentator for ITV4, Eurosport, Sky and many other channels worldwide and was the commentator at the key cycling venues for road-racing, time trials and track at the London 2012 Olympic Games. A quote from Anthony McCrossan: “The Winchester City Centre criteriums set me on my career path as a commentator at some of the largest cycling events in the world including the London 2012 Olympics. It was at one of the earliest winchester events that I picked up a microphone and described cycle race action to a crowd for the first time. I wish everyone involved a successful event and am sure it will help inspire more young riders to emulate champions like Dani King and Rob Hayles”. Rob Hayles: “For me, the city centre crits like Winchester were all part of not only my enjoyment of bike racing, but also a massive part of my learning curve that made me and so many others, the bike riders we ultimately became. To have Winchester back on the calendar excites me and makes me wish I was a teenager again!”

Rolling Back the Years Many of you are probably wondering what is happening today and where the idea of a closed circuit race came from. Many of you might be thinking that this is a new and innovative way to showcase cycle racing in the UK, and may have seen The Tour series on ITV4. This isn’t a new event by any means and has been done before back in the 1980’s. Winchester has great history with cycling and actually grew one of the UK’s most natural cycling talents at the turn of the century. It was a man by the name of Frederick Frost (Dickie). Dickie would race one hundred mile races and won the Bath Road Club 100 mile race three times, twice in succession! He also won the Cawardine Cup and Kops Cup and also broke the 100 mile record by 10 minutes in 1897 By the end of his career he had amassed trophies and medals worth £2000! Winchester still continues to create history with the local cycling club, VC Venta. VC Venta has been going since late 1970 and has previously organised local Criteriums in the city. They took place in 1988-1990 and then again in 1997 & 1998. They have helped the likes of Rob Hayles, Mark Beal-Toms, Mark Armstrong, Wayne Coombes and Geoff Giddings (marketing manager, Raleigh) and local boy Anthony McCrossan (British Cycling commentator) start their careers. Cycling is experiencing a ‘boom’ movement at the moment and we are riding on the crest of the wave. VC Venta’s membership has risen again since last August and they now have coaching available to juniors from 6-16 years of age. Although these events are great to watch, they do take a lot of time, effort and money to put on. VC Venta would love to participate and spectate in this event in future years, but we need the support from the local community, council and sponsors to do so. We hope that this event captures your imagination and it helps to create a few more local British Champions out of our club. If you need any information on VC Venta then please head to www.vcventa.co.uk or e-mail Chris Hutchings or Crispin Quail on info@vcventa.co.uk.

Events take place on: Sunday Club Rides: Start at Winchester Hotel, 8 or 8:30am, 30-50 miles

Tuesday Club Rides: Start at Hargroves Cycles, 6:30pm or 7pm, 2hr rides
