Come along to the City Museum and Westgate and discover Winchester’s fascinating history from its prehistoric past to the present day. Find out the stories behind the museums’ collections of amazing objects. Our exciting displays are all about learning and having fun at the same time. Our City Space gallery in the Discovery Centre shows an exciting programme of

Tudors at the Westgate

Shoulder to Shoulder A small display of civic objects representing Winchester’s long and proud association with the British Armed Forces. Many of the items were given by military units in recognition of the city’s role as host. Guildhall opening hours only.

St Cross Michaelmas Fair Winchester Museums will be taking artefacts and activities out to this popular show. Come along and say hello.

Re-enactors bring Tudor history alive. What was it like to live in England during the reigns of Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I? Bring a camera. Free family event.

Museums Store Open Evening Winchester Museums invite members of the public to an evening opening of their collections facility F2 at Bar End Industrial Estate, 5.30 – 6.30pm. This is a free event but numbers are limited so we would ask that you pre-book with Winchester Tourist Information Centre on 01962 840 500.

Winchester Art Club Annual Exhibition This annual exhibition offers the chance for local artists, both amateur and professional, to exhibit a range of work from paintings to sculpture, drawings to prints. Each Saturday during the exhibition there will be short demonstrations by exhibiting artists. Free admission.

Over 55’s Information Day Visit the Winchester Museums stall at this event organised by Winchester District Over 55’s Forum. There will be information and advice on a variety of services available within the Winchester District. Free event.

Saxon Living History Days Join AngloSaxon reenactors Weorod and immerse yourself in the daily life, and violent death, of the Dark Ages! Free event, don’t forget to bring camera.

Tue 25 – Sun 30 October Westgate 10am – 5pm

Halloween Horror Week Drop by and root out the rodents in our rat hunt spotter quiz. The creepy Westgate will be decorated especially for Halloween.

PLACE_MENT PLACE_MENT is an exhibition that explores the reading and measuring of place both from a scientific and an artistic perspective. By bringing together artefacts, films, historic maps and paintings by Tina Bird Wallbridge it invites the visitor to consider their own identity of a ‘sense of place’.

Halloween Horrors Ghoulish make and take activities in the spooky Westgate. Free event, children must be accompanied by adults.

Winter Threads – Force 8

Make your own contribution to our map wall. All materials provided. Activity suitable for children 6+. All children to be accompanied by an adult.

Force 8 is a textile arts group formed in 2000 by eight enthusiastic textile artists. They have since grown to sixteen dedicated makers who follow their original ideals of promoting textile art through workshops, master classes and exhibitions such as Winter Threads. Members of the group will be on hand throughout the exhibition to demonstrate their skills and chat about their work.

Christmas Quizzes Join in the hunt for objects in our Christmas Tree spotter quiz. Younger children can track down the robins perched around the museum. Free quizzes for all the family. Tasty prizes for successful festive sleuths.

Diamond Jubilee In the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, this small display features objects, souvenirs and photographs showing how the people of Winchester commemorated the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. Guildhall opening hours only.

This popular annual exhibition showcases paintings from Winchester Museums’ topographical collection and gives the public an opportunity to see items that are not normally on display.

Civil War Muster Members of the Sealed Knot muster at the Westgate with muskets and pike. Join in military drill and find out about life as a soldier in the Civil War. Free event. No booking required. Don’t forget to bring a camera.

This Is My Home Now

The Romans Return

This exhibition documents and celebrates the lives of refugees and asylum seekers, and includes photographs, sketches and personal recollections of the refugees. A project initiated by the Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group.

Studying the Romans at school? Come along and meet a Roman soldier and Roman lady from Legio Secunda Augusta. Replica objects to handle. Free event, don’t forget to bring a camera.

Features a rare surviving 18th century sedan chair from Winchester Museums’ collections. Did this form of public transport have the lowest carbon ‘footprint’ ever? This exhibition will ask visitors to think about the most energy efficient way of getting from A to B. Free admission.
