on the cover Kim Behm Kim Behm was born in Des Moines and has worked as a professional artist for over 40 years. He has been a designer, animator, art director, illustrator, and a painter throughout, producing a variety of imagery for both commercial use and exhibition. Mr. Behm has received awards on a local, regional and national scale. Kim comes from a family of artists, a father and two sisters actively creating art, and a daughter and son who have exhibited their work in photography. He earned a BFA in Printmaking, and an MA in Painting and Art History at the University of New Mexico. For the past decade, Kim has been a faculty member at Hawkeye Community College, teaching a variety of studio art courses, Art History and Art Appreciation. For the past several decades, he has participated in supporting worthy local projects like Public Broadcasting, the Cedar Trails Festival, and numerous other endeavors. The illustration for the Cedar Valley Visitors Guide illustrates our region as a family friendly scene with an identifiable area landmark. The Cedar River is the one feature common to the entire area, and the beautiful falls provide a wonderful background to the scene. The Ice House Museum is also an attractive and well known landmark, but there are no picnic tables near the particular view created. That is an easily solved problem for an illustrator. The picnicking families are composed separately, and the two elements, the foreground group and background are merged. This helps to show what a great place to live, work, and raise a family our Cedar Valley is.

The Cedar Valley is home to a thriving arts community with a number of talented artists creating visual, audio, and other works that improve quality of life and visitor experiences. The Visitors Bureaus honor this tradition by showcasing selected artists as opportunities arise. Thank you to Kim Behm, for providing the image for this year’s visitor guide cover.
