DUNKERTON HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIANS SPEECH: Bethany Christians and Carter Michels Graduates, Family Members, and Staff members, we would like to start off by thanking you for pushing us to where we are today. This year has really been one that we will never forget. While it wasn’t the Senior year we were expecting while growing up, it was a year that taught us the most about life. Hopefully, this has made us stronger and more prepared for what life has in store for us in the future.
Bethany Christians
We know that we have been very excited for this day, and parents we know that mostcof you are excited for us to leave too. Kidding. You probably sit there and wonder where the years have gone. From back to when we first walked through the doors, teary-eyed because we were leaving you for the first time. To now when we walk out of the school for the last time. Just know that we will always come back to you, whether it be for advice or for laundry. Teachers and Staff. We want to thank you for the time and effort you have invested in us. One of the best parts about going to a small school like Dunkerton is the connections that we make with not only our peers but with the teachers and staff as well. They not only taught us what we need for the future but also care about us and our personal endeavors.

"Together, we experience life. Separately, we will pursue our dreams. Forever, our memories will remain."
Mr. Bolts, sitting in your classroom and just talking to you every day is my favorite part of the day. Who knew you were such a big nerd.
Carter Michels
Mrs. Corbin, thank you for coming back to save us after maternity leave sophomore year. We still don’t quite understand Romeo and Juliet. However, you have most definitely always pushed every single one of us to become the best person we could be. You never failed to always include everyone. Thank you for your dedication!
Mr. Turpen thanks for being the only teacher to make me use a notebook to take notes. And for the extra credit points that didn’t actually mean anything. Mr. Kelchen, I would like to thank you for allowing our senior year to still be special despite Covid. You allowed us to participate in much, much more than most schools, and I think many of us took that for granted. I couldn’t have imagined how hard it was to decide what events we could and couldn’t partake in. Thank you deeply! I also would like to thank you for pushing me to strive to become better. CAPS has by far been one of my classes that has prepared me the most for my future. And while it sometimes may be hard to admit, you were right! And Mrs. Julie, thank you for being the mother of the school and for singing Frozen in your car on our way to Confirmation. Graduates, many of us have been wanting this day for a long time, and others are terrified for what the future holds. While both of these feelings seem typical for seniors, there are some things we are most definitely going to miss. The typical Friday night football games, walking down the halls with our best friends, the obnoxiously loud talking, yelling, and complaining that goes on during tests - mainly just in Turpen’s, getting pre game jitters in the locker room, being able to let loose on Fridays in Spanish with the classic Just Dance spanish songs that we now all know by heart, running through the halls for track practice, and that smell we all know when we come back to school after summer break. It’s strange to believe we say goodbye to it all as we take our final steps through the school, one last time as students. However, we must never forget where we’ve come from and the memories that we have made.

Memories such as playing football or swamp monster on the dirt patch at recess. Abby, making the game winning shot in 6th grade basketball. We always knew if we wanted a chance to win a buzzer beater, the ball would have to be going to you! Going on the 4-year trip and almost being mugged in a 7-11. Josie, almost breaking her nose in my basement while pretending to be a cheerleader. We now know cheer isn’t your thing! Our big trip to Ewalu and the other guys pulling Jake away in his sleeping bag. Morgan, making basketball senior night an unforgettable one. Robert, for making everyone in the school come closer together. Your fist bumps bring light into everyone’s day. Jacob, teaching us what it means to be a hard working man. I’ve never met someone as dedicated to their work as you. Q, thanks for showing me what you were eating each day in class. And sometimes sharing it with the rest of us. The whole class, never making it through a single gym class without some sort of argument going down. Especially during dodgeball, steal the pin, steal the flag, and mat ball. To say we are a competitive class would be an understatement. Many of us are going to take different paths in the future. Some will be farmers, some will become nurses or doctors, others will protect our country. Thank you, Lane, Gabe, Abby, and Trevor. Some will be lawyers while others will work in Science and Technology. We all have different goals and dreams, but we all come from the same place. A small town named Dunkerton. This place has helped to shape us into who we want to be in the future. It has helped us grow and change ourselves, and there is no ceiling on how much more we can grow after we leave this building. So with that being said, follow your dreams, don’t shy away from challenges, and be who you wish to be. But most importantly, remember where your roots began. Thank you! "The ultimage measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and conveinence, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." -Martin Luther King Jr.
Class Salutatorian: Class of 2021, throughout our past four years at East High, we have endured many hardships that Hannah Diane Cary have shaped us into who we have become today. Our experience as high school students looked far from normal. There were times of frustration and many uncertainties. Yet, here we are today, moving onto the next chapter. Through these unprecedented times, we have grown so much. Although the pandemic reflects so much sadness and suffering, it taught us one really important life lesson: how to be resilient. To be resilient means to adapt and overcome, in the face of adversity, and we have done just that. Given the circumstances that we were in, we adapted to the situation, and we were still able to achieve this great accomplishment. Going into my junior year, I decided to take the leap into the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, which is one of the most rigorous programs in the entire world. Throughout my journey in IB, there were many times that I thought, “Why am I doing this to myself?” I spent many nights staying up late trying to perfect assignments, acquired wisdom from thousands of pages, and studied countless hours for various exams, but looking back at my experience in IB, I can now see how valuable the struggle was. Not only was I able to persist during some strenuous points in the program, but I learned how to be successful because of said persistence. If I had decided to just give up when things got hard, I would not be where I am today. Because I was persistent and stuck with the program, I have been presented with many rare opportunities and I have overall developed into a more studious person. That being said, no matter how hard things get, stick with it. We were all able to overcome one of the most uncertain times that we will ever experience in our lives. As we move into the next chapter, we can use our knowledge about how to be resilient, and use it to be successful. When I was younger, I vividly remember my dad telling me, “If I can teach you anything in life, it is to always follow through.” As we move on from our time here at East High, let’s take all that we have learned and follow through, whether that means you take these skills directly into the workplace, or onto further your education. Whatever it may be, as Henry David Thoreau once said, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”

We continue to carry these memories with us - memories that were once mere moments of love and laughter shared between a class, a family. Our class has experienced all of the good and the bad together. However, it’s time for us to move forward. We’re standing on the edge of the rest of our lives. But, we’re ready. We’re ready because we have prepared. We’re ready because we’ve built a strong foundation. We’re ready because just as we knew as freshmen, we now know as seniors: we’re going to be okay.”

INDEPENDENCE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL Valedictorian, Drew Hill, Speech:
Greetings. I want to start by thanking my principal, teachers, coaches and school staff for all their hard work through the years. Thank you for putting up with me and helping me get to this point of graduation. I also want to thank others who have helped teach, coach, and mentor me. I want to thank Pastor James Ganze for helping and pastoring me. Thanks to my parents for pushing, advising, helping, providing, and coaching me onward. As I thought about this speech, and what I should say, the class motto came to mind. “If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth the reading, or do things worth the writing.” It is a catchy, fun little quote from Benjamin Franklin. However, most of us will probably never become world famous. I could Drew Hill be wrong, but there are probably not a lot of future Presidents, major league sports champions, or groundbreaking scientists sitting here today. Does that mean we will be forgotten? I want to remind us that God has not, and will not, forget us. As Christians, He will remember us and prepare a home in Heaven for us. I’m reminded of the words from that old song, “Only one life, twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.” Even if we are not famous in this world, what we do for God’s kingdom will last. When this world passes away, all its fame will go with it. Every tract you passed out, every time you came to church when you didn’t want to, every time you prayed when no one else saw it, God saw it, and He thought it was worth remembering. And the Christian never truly dies, for when we die on this Earth, we will go to Heaven. From reading the Bible, the only thing that I know God can forget is our sins when they are confessed and washed in the blood. Isn’t it wonderful that God will not forget us, but He will forget our sins that we wish we could forget? That is what I wanted to leave with you today. God remembers you, and He loves you. You are not forgotten, but He has promised to forget our sins when we confess them to Him. Use your talents and abilities to glorify God. Thank you.

NORTH BUTLER HIGH SCHOOL
Class Valedictorian Speech - Brooke Trees Good afternoon family, friends, faculty, and fellow graduates. I would like to start out by thanking all the people who helped us get here today. Parents and guardians who have supported us through it all, teachers who have never given up on us, and other supporters who have dedicated their time to help us succeed. wWhen I think about graduation, the song “You’re gonna miss this” by Trace Adkins comes to mind. He quotes, “You’re gonna miss this, you’re gonna want this back, you’re gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast.” I believe the message he’s trying to convey in the song is to enjoy the little things before it’s too late. I’ve come to realize that life is full of milestones like your first day of high school, getting your license, and turning 18. Graduation is a milestone that many of us have been waiting for since the first day of freshman year. That being said, I think that the memories along the way are what makes a milestone so special. I’ve found that most of these memories are made from the little things like Michaela figuring out that chocolate milk does not come from brown cows, watching Michael and Brooke Trees John give speeches in 10th grade english, bonding over our struggles in spanish 4, watching Abby and David’s dance battles, and lastly, Jeremy, we get it, you lift. Something all of these memories have in common is that we made them with each other. Our time at North Butler High School will not be remembered by grades, popularity, musical talents, or athletic abilities. Instead, it will be remembered by relationships. Most importantly, the relationships with the people sitting next to you. Today we say goodbye to everything that was familiar. We are moving on. Even though we are moving on with our lives and wherever that takes us, these relationships stick with us for years to come. As you start your new journey, never forget the foundation that built the person that you are today. The experiences and lessons learned during the past four years will help you to achieve anything you want in life. I truly believe that we are all capable of doing amazing things, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for each and every one of us. These were some good times, so take a moment and look around. (pause) You may not know it now, but we are going to miss this.

GRADUATING CLASS OF 2021
OELWEIN HIGH SCHOOL Valedictorian: Isabella Lopez, Speech Good afternoon, and welcome to the graduation ceremony for the Oelwein High School Class of 2021. I would like to begin my speech by thanking some people on behalf of our class. First off, thank you to the school board for their important decisions made for the safety of everyone in our school district during this time. Thank you to Mr. Hadley and Mr. Schauf for advocating for our students throughout this difficult, and probably stressful, school year, especially with being able to open up the school for this special occasion. Thank you to the counselors for supporting and working with us students towards our future goals after high school. Thank you to the teachers and other faculty members for striving to keep our education going and our learning increasing. Thank you to the parents and guardians of our students for supporting and encouraging your students throughout this unusual school year, and thank you to anyone that has contributed to any of our learning and education that I may not have mentioned. In a time like today, one of the most important aspects of one’s character is resiliency. MerriamIsabella Lopez Webster defines resiliency as “an ability to recover from or adjust easily to adversity or change.” The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many changes in everyone’s lives; such as loss of a family member, lost wages, financial struggles, separation from loved ones, and etc. I can say with certainty that my fellow classmates here today definitely can be described as resilient through their accomplishments and by overcoming obstacles during this school year. Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook, once said at another commencement as part of her speech, “The most important thing I learned is that we are not born with a certain amount of resilience. It is a muscle, and that means we can build it. We build resilience into ourselves. We build resilience into the people we love. And we build it together, as a community. That’s called ‘collective resilience.’ It’s an incredibly powerful force – and it’s one that our country and our world need a lot more of right about now. It is in our relationships with each other that we find our will to live, our capacity to love, and our ability to bring change into this world.” When I began writing this speech, I looked for quotes about resilience; when I came across this quote, I knew this needed to be incorporated into my speech because her description and understanding of resiliency is exactly what I want to inform my audience about pertaining to this difficult school year. By being resilient, my classmates here today and I have successfully finished all requirements in order to walk across this stage shortly to receive our diploma. While to some it may seem like a sad ending of a stage in our lives, I also would hope everyone views it as doors upon doors opening and welcoming our entrance as we leave this wonderful school and shift towards our future goals, whether those goals be attending college, entering the workforce, having a gap year, etc. My classmates can probably agree with me that this school year has thrown obstacle after obstacle towards us on our path to finishing high school and just wanting to have a memorable experience with peers. We have our teachers, parents, guardians, community members, and other faculty members to thank for supporting us through all the challenges we have faced and have had to overcome. Without them, I don’t think any of this today would have been possible, and because of that, I am beyond grateful to have been a part of the Oelwein Community School District throughout my entire journey of education until now. I would like to end my speech with a final quote to leave everyone with from Elizabeth Edwards. She passed away in 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. “Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it’s less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you’ve lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that’s good.” Now lastly, thank you for your attendance today to support and honor our graduating class; may you all have success in all of your endeavors.

Megan Elise Wheelock Valedictorian: Austin James Kimmerle, Speech
My fellow graduates of the year 2021. Over the past four years, we have learned so much. We’ve learned Math from Mr.Woodall and how he taught us complicated methods and formulas which would eventually lead to an answer equalling one. We’ve learned English from Ms. Rusch and how she shared the message of how we should read more books by using literature all about burning said books. I remember back to sophomore year, both Mr.Woodall and Ms. Rusch taught me the importance of debate skills. Specifically when to use them and when not to, more so relating to certain professional football teams. Within both of their first days, they acknowledged my disdain of their favored teams by introducing me to the idea of failing their classes because of my love of the Broncos and my opposing views of the Packers and the Chiefs. I am proud to say that I am graduating despite the fact that my opinion has not yet changed, go Broncos! It is not just the academics but the life lessons that Valley has taught me that I will take with me into the future. Of all the lessons we’ve learned, I would say the most important is how to roll with the punches. Over this last year that Austin Kimmerle is a lesson that everyone can say that they’ve learned. As a class, we’ve overcome cancelling our junior prom, losing our junior year track season, distance learning, and a whole year of masks. We’ve had to roll with the punches of every new rule put in place and how to restructure yourself when life continuously tears you down. As a class I can confidently say we have restructured ourselves. Another lesson that we’ve learned is that when we’re struggling and on the brink of falling apart, we’ve been able to help each other get back up from the void. Valley has taught me how to help those around me. When we were struggling with classes, we would come together to help one another, whether that be academically or with extracurriculars. Another lesson that Valley has taught me is how to work cooperatively and get along with others. Thinking back to our freshman year geography

class, Ms. Hall took the time to teach us that lesson. She taught us that the things we say should always be said in kindness, and not the snippy way that we had been accustomed to. This lesson has helped me drop in my consistent “snippy-ness”, though it still remains today, mostly taking place at the worst possible moment. And it’s a lesson I will have to continuously work on for the rest of my days. Valley has taught me that there is a time and a place for everything. There is a time to talk and a time to be quiet. A time to goof around and a time to be serious. And as Ecclesiastes 3 verses 4 says, “there is a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.” Right now is that time. We can mourn the comfort that we are leaving here at Valley yet dance over the memories and connections we have made. We can dance about the lessons we have learned, the academic ones and possibly more importantly the life lessons, and how they have shaped us and can help us in the future. We can dance knowing that we have been prepared for the future that we are going into. At this time, I would like to take a moment on behalf of myself and my fellow graduates to thank the people that have brought us here. First I’d like to thank both Mr. Woodall and Coach Jo personally for their unwavering support, patience with their athletes and students, and their guidance to particular students who needed it. I’d also like to thank Ms. Rusch for being, at least in my experience, the first consistent english teacher we’ve had in our schooling days here at Valley. Thank you for making Literature and English classes a bit more interesting and alot less bland most days. Next I’d like to thank Mr. Tanney for the balance of education and laughs in his classes over the years. I would like to thank Ms. Hall and Mrs. Stone for their considerate natures with their students and willingness to understand any arisen issues relating to turning in homework. I would like to thank Mr. L’Heureux for all he has done. And finally I’d like to thank the secret grand puba of the school, Mrs. Clement, for all the time and energy she’s put into helping the school, its students, and even the faculty. Finally I’d like to say this, hey we’re high school graduates now. And soon we’re going to be signing each other’s final Valley Lutheran yearbooks and saying what I hope isn’t our final goodbyes. There will be hugs and tears. Fist bumps and handshakes. We’ll try our best to stay in touch. But hopefully we’ll be living our best lives and doing our best. I’d like to leave you with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us…” I can say Valley has helped us to grow what lies within us. And I can’t see what lies before us on our own individual paths. Thank you all. We did it!
