Slumberland First Place: Furniture, Home Decor Slumberland, owned by the Davis family, has been serving the Cedar Valley for 40 years. “We used to be located in Black Hawk Village,” said owner Jon Davis. “We bought the old Mueller’s building on University Avenue in 1995.” Jon grew up in the family business. “It’s not like I remember an official start date or anything,” he said. “I remember running around the store when I was a kid, schlepping things around and delivering furniture as a teenager.” Jon’s father, Dick Davis, opened the Cedar Falls store Dec. 1, 1969. “It was the first Slumberland store outside of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area,” Jon said. Dick Davis began working for corporate Slumberland in Minneapolis and eventually, in 1985, bought the Cedar Falls store and another in Cedar Rapids in 1987. “I ran the Cedar Rapids store for four or five years,” Jon said. The family also owns stores in Dubuque, which they opened in 1997; Baraboo, Wis., which opened in 2006; and Freeport, Ill., which just opened Sept. 26. “The really neat thing is my son has joined the business and runs the Freeport store, so now we have the third generation involved,” Jon said. And Dick, although retired since 1998, still has his hands in the business. “He and my mother live in Baraboo, and he’s in the store every morning vacuuming and harassing the employees, giving them a hard time,” Jon said. Slumberland is a full-line home furnishings and mattress franchise store. “We have the buying power of a 117-store national chain and the customer service of a local-

We have the best of both worlds.” Jon credits his business’s success on the store’s associates, who bring more than 200 years of combined service in home furnishings. “Over the years, we have developed a staff of very knowledgeable, loyal, terrific people who really take care of our cus-
tomers,” Jon said. “I work here, and I want it to be fun. I’m lucky to work with the people I do. We have the most knowledgeable, experienced staff in the Cedar Valley.” Besides its Best of the Best recognition, Slumberland was named the 2004 National Multiple Sclerosis Employer of the Year. “We had an employee who had Multiple Sclerosis who nominated us,” Jon said. “It was a unique and meaningful honor.” The Waterloo store also was named 2008 Slumberland Franchise Store of the Year.

“Because we had such a great year last year, we were chosen as one of only five Slumberlands to receive the Tempurepedic Sleep Experience Center,” Jon said. “It’s very cool — computer generated. People should really come in and take a look at it.”

Cedar Valley Hospice Crossroads Center Berdell Shauls and Deb Card display compassionate care and exceptional service each day in their work at Cedar Valley Hospice. Both Berdell, receptionist at the CVH Waterloo office, and Deb, clinical services manager in Waterloo, describe themselves as one of many employees who should be honored for going above and beyond to help others. They agree the best part of their jobs is the opportunity to serve others and work with wonderful people. “Berdell Shauls is someone who truly cares for each individual who comes in contact with her,” said Paula Steimel, business manager. “She not only supports our patients and families, she is always there to support our staff as well.” Honored in her position as receptionist for the second consecutive year, Berdell has worked at CVH for eight years. Medical staff honoree Deb Card has been employed at Cedar Valley Hospice since 2003. “Deb exemplifies our mission and

philosophy and strives to help in any way she can,” said Stacy Weinke, director of clinical services at CVH. “She is one of those rare individuals who is able to anticipate what needs to be done in a particular situation and takes the initiative to accomplish it.” As part of the Waterloo team, Berdell and Deb represent two of the 140 Cedar Valley Hospice employees and 450 volunteers who have made a difference to thousands of patients and families this year. With offices in Waterloo, Grundy Center, Independence, Waverly and the Hospice Home, CVH served 993 hospice patients and nearly 3,000 grief clients last year. Cedar Valley Hospice has been providing quality endof-life care and grief services for the last 30 years.
Congratulations and thanks to our receptionist, Berdell, and to Deb, Clincial Services Manger, for being named “Best of the Best.” Thank you for allowing Cedar Valley Hospice to continue Making Each Moment Matter in the lives of patients and grieving families in the Cedar Valley.
to say thank you. 30 Years
It is always an honor to be considered the best in any endeavor. We at Crossroads Center are proud of our stores that have been selected for this honor, and we salute them. It also is appropriate for us to take a moment to salute those who make it possible for us to conduct our business in the Cedar Valley — you, the shoppers. Without you, nothing that we do would have any meaning. A store could have the best appearance, wonderful inventory and provide great customer service, all to no avail without you. Crossroads Center will soon celebrate its 40th year in business. We are grateful for your support all these years and eagerly look forward to the next 40.

Simpson Furniture Honorable Mention: Carpet/Flooring, Furniture, Home Decor Store As one of the Cedar Valley’s and downtown Cedar Falls’ most senior retail businesses, the Simpson Furniture Companies continue to please their customers. Terrific selection, long-term and expert sales staff, continued service after the sale and the reputation for putting the customer first are reasons for being one of the Best of the Best every year in The Courier’s annual survey. This year, as in the past, Simpson was chosen as one of the Best of the Best in three categories: furniture, carpet/flooring and home decor. “I know we say this a lot, but it is from the heart. We owe it all to our fantastic customers who return to us year after year and our loyal, committed staff. We have three and four generations of customers and many employees who have helped these same families for more than 30 years,” said Dale Emmert, company president. Another reason the Cedar Valley keeps voting for Simpson Furniture is the company’s constant drive to stay with the times and the fashions of the home furniture and flooring industry. Just this month, Simpson is kicking off the grand opening of its brand new flooring department. Simpson added the area’s only Shaw Design Center, a new Mo-Hawk Carpet gallery and a complete hard surfaces offering. With the complete remodel and redesign, an additional 33 percent in floor space was added. Local electrical contractor Stickfort Electric installed a state-of-the-art lighting system to highlight the final presentation. Company vice president Terry Glasgow said, “We have been working on this design and thought process for almost a year. The Shaw designers helped with our layout, and we have one of the most beautiful places to show our customers great new floor products.” Over the last 10 years, Simpson has offered more to shoppers from Northeast Iowa with continual growth. The Rooms 4 Less showroom at 2300 Main St. is in its 10th year of offering affordable complete room package options. With its expanded distribution center, the company keeps more inventory in stock, so most customers can receive their new purchases in just days. Last fall, Simpson bought the Flack Interior Design Associates firm headed up

by longtime and award-winning ASID designer Kathy Flack. In the spring, the Flack company was folded into the Simpson downtown location, and an all-new design studio was added, incorporating the beautiful second level windows and a stunning new contemporary chandelier. Knowing that you either move forward and work hard to get better or let others do the work and fall behind, Simpson Furniture continues its leadership by announcing the addition of a new store in eastern Iowa. In November, Simpson will take its successful model south, and plans are under way to open a new Simpson Furniture showroom in Coralville. Simpson Furniture-Coralville vice president Deb Emmert is excited about the new market and the new challenge.
“We’ve been looking at this market for years. Everything fell into place over the last six months, and we’re taking over an existing building that has been a furniture showroom,” Deb said. “This latest move even helps our Cedar Falls-Waterloo area customers, as we can share in the buying and quantities we buy and offer more competitive prices on many of our lines.” The new store will open by Thanksgiving, and current Simpson staffer and recent University of Northern Iowa graduate Zach Epley will move to Coralville to help establish the Simpson culture in the CoralvilleIowa City market. The confidence that the greater Cedar Valley shows by repeatedly coming back
to shop with Simpson Furniture and Floor Covering is the inspiration that fuels the owners and employees. That fuel will help guide this 63-year-old company to stay one of the Best of the Best. Whether it’s better service, new selections or continued expansion, the Simpson Furniture Companies hope to serve the area for another 63 years. Longtime Simpson Furniture staffer, former president and current board chairman David Olson said, “We are here because of the great people in Waterloo-Cedar Falls and surrounding areas. We are the ‘people’ store, and we can not give enough thanks for honoring us again. Thanks from the entire Simpson team.”

B&B Lawn Care Honorable Mention: Landscaper
Bob, Rob and Matt Adams started B&B Lawn Care 18 years ago, first doing lawn care and snow removal. As the years passed, their customer base grew, and they began offering more services, including landscaping and irrigation. “We specialize in giving our customers quality service at an honest price. We treat all our customers as if they are members of our family,” Rob said. ★ 444 Edison St., Waterloo ★ (319) 4042326 ★ 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Not only can we landscape and irrigate a customer’s property, we can maintain that property. Our customers are our No. 1 priority. We feel our services set us apart from our competitors because we go the extra mile for our customers. For every project we take on, perfection is our priority.” For the last nine years, B&B Lawn Care has been doing primarily government, commercial and industrial lawn care and snow removal. Noticing that the Cedar Valley didn’t have a quality company that could offer full service lawn care, landscaping, irrigation and snow removal, Rob and Matt decided to expand the irrigation
and landscaping end of the business. “We would like to thank our employees for all their hard work and dedication,” Rob said. “Also, we would like to thank our past customers for the recognition. We look
forward to providing our new customers with a professional-quality service. “It doesn’t matter if we are doing 20 homes for a contractor or an afternoon project for a homeowner, every customer is No. 1 to us.”

Western Home Communities First Place: Assisted Living, Nursing Facility
When it first opened nearly 100 years ago, this home for the aged was made up of 12 units. Today, Western Home Communities provides a home for 750 individuals in the Cedar Valley and is still growing. WHC, a continuing care retirement community, is made up of the main campus on East 11th Street, which includes the Stanard Family Assisted Living Center, with 117 living units and administrative offices, and the Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center, a 100bed skilled nursing facility that opened in 1991. Directly across the street is Willowwood Retirement Community, completed in 1989 with 34 independent-living units. The South Main Street Campus expansion began with 12 acres in 1990. Windgrace and Windermere Retirement Communities were completed in 1991 and 1992 with 33 and 34 independent-living units, respectively. Construction of Windcrest Villas began in 2001 and continues today with 94 villa units currently occupied. In 2004, Windcove Retirement Community opened with 70 independent-living units ranging from 950 to 1,650 square feet. Windhaven Assisted Living Center, containing 48 living units, was completed in 2006 and also includes 32 units of dementia care in Thalman Square. Expansion of Windhaven will commence this fall and add another 35 units. Open in March 2008, Windridge Retirement Community added another 70 units of independent living to South Campus. In the fall of 2009, construction of Windcrest Town Homes will begin. Two buildings of four units each will be fashioned after Windcrest Villas. “Our mission is to create fulfilling lifestyles for seniors, their families and our employees. We want to help people have the best quality of life they can have — and that goes for both the staff and the residents — and have some fun along the way,” said Kris Hansen, Western Home Communities CEO. That approach has earned WHC not only first place in this year’s Best of the Best for assisted living and nursing facility but numerous other honors. Also this year, WHC was honored as one of the top 20 Employers of Choice in the Cedar Valley. In the past, WHC has been recognized with the Business Hall of Fame Award by the city of Cedar Falls as well as receiving awards from the Iowa Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and the American Association of Homes and Ser-

vices for the Aging for its quality-of-life and senior services programming. “Our residents and staff make up the tremendous culture and environment within our organization,” said Jerry Harris, Western Home Communities COO. Western Home Communities, which is a nonprofit organization governed by a local board of directors, was founded in 1912 as the Western Old People’s Home of the Evangelical Association. Incorporated in 1924, the organization began providing retirement living and nursing care to more than 200 people. In the 1950s, because of denominational mergers, the organization became affiliated with the United Methodist Church and became known as the Western Home. Today, WHC celebrates its history with the United Methodist Church but is really a community organization for the Cedar Valley. In 2001, the Western Home changed its name to Western Home Communities to better reflect and encompass the senior living opportunities and services offered. What triggers the expansion? “Again, it begins with great staff,” said Harris. Hansen adds: “We have been able to expand our services because our staff understands the needs of the Cedar Valley.
The staff at the South Campus. We listen to the community at large and we develop our programs and services to fit those needs. We also look at what’s going on across the country in senior services to incorporate innovative ideas into our organization.” That evolution enables WHC to expand its continuum of care from a nursing home to assisted living, independent living, memory enhanced and companion care. SureCare Services, affiliated with WHC, provides 1,500 hours of companion care each week, including housekeeping, laundry and transportation services.
It’s not just residents and staff who benefit from Western Home Communities’ growth: The $70-plus million in infrastructure at the South Main Street Campus and continued renovation at the Main Campus on East 11th St. in Cedar Falls has made a huge economic impact on the community. According to both Hansen and Harris, the relationship is mutually beneficial. “People tell us what an asset Western Home Communities is to the Cedar Valley, but we know what a tremendous asset the Cedar Valley and surrounding areas are to us.”

Tommy Nguyen and Marie Huynh, owners of LA Nails, chose the nail salon business because they enjoy helping customers feel better about themselves. “We emphasize customer service and we are dedicated to excellent customer service,” Tommy said. “Marie loves to make fingernails very pretty. We do pedicures and manicure gel, pink and white, French, color nails and more. Tommy and Marie both believe there is no secret to their success. “Just treat everyone equally, do the best you can by taking your time to do it right. That’s what makes the customer happy. And if the customer is happy with the work, then we are also happy,” Marie said. “We want everyone to be happy when they walk out of here.” Although men are not usually customers, men are welcome at LA Nails for pedicures and manicures. They can always expect a quality masculine experience. “It’s not just for the ladies, and we also have kids pedicure chairs now. “We want our customers to know that we care about them. He was the oldest child in his family, so he cut his siblings’ and cousins’ hair as they grew up. Her sister attended barber school as well in Cedar Rapids. “I think watching my dad cut hair and my sister style my mom’s hair every weekend growing up influenced my decision to do hair and also made me love and appreciate it even more,” she said.

Scott’s Electric Inc. Scott J. Jordan owns and operates Scott’s Electric, Inc., which has been in business for the last 26 years and has been proud to have been voted first place for being the best electrician this year and for the last several years. Scott attended the Waterloo public school, graduated from West high School in 1977, and attended Hawkeye Community College to earn an electrical trade diploma. Scott is married to Charlotte and they have five children and one granddaughter. After high school, Scott started working with his brother, Steve, in the electrical business, starting off with S. Jordan Electric and then starting his own business, Scott’s Electric, Inc., in 1983. Scott says being an electrician is something he had always wanted to do and to have the opportunity to work and help people through our Cedar Valley. The two seemed to fit well, so this is
why I chose this profession and what is neat about this, even after 26 years, I still enjoy to go to work everyday. With our electric business we work with people’s homes and businesses. Our motto from day one is to provide good old fashion hometown service. We work to meet all our customer’s needs at whatever level it is. We provide 24 hour service, seven days a week. As we know, electricity doesn’t know how to tell time, so when a problem occurs, we are there when needed. Our customers have found that we provide friendly, fast reasonable services and always there when their need arises. With this past year, Mother Nature gave us some tough challenges within ourselves, being hit with the floods within our business and with the different downturns and upturns of our local economy. It has given us first-hand experience with what people have gone through and

are going through during these tough times. Scott also serves on the Black Hawk County board of Supervisors and had served on the Waterloo city council for 10 years. Scott also enjoys serving on a variety of local community boards. In Scott’s spare time he likes to volunteer. Scott’s involved in various volunteer projects through the Heartland volunteers from filling potholes, to cleaning up storm damaged areas, providing smoke detectors, to providing hats and gloves for our children, providing of box fans for the elderly and many other efforts. He was followed by three generations of Locke descendants, licensed funeral directors carrying on his vision of exemplary service to the community, best expressed in the funeral home’s motto: “Where your wishes have governed for four generations.” John, Jack and Eric Locke are joined by Rick Hulstein, licensed funeral director; Kristine Hirsch, certified after-care and pre-planning consultant; and office and funeral assistants. When Carroll Locke established his business, his main concern was the people he served and helping them through a difficult time with compassion and understanding. That is still the goal at Locke Funeral Home. Carroll’s son John best expressed this sentiment when he said, “Like my father, I’ve always thought it a privilege to help the families we serve during a very personal time in their lives. BOB SEGEBARTH / The Courier
Tom Moreland chose to start a hospice because he felt called to serve persons who are sick and dying. His mission to become “Iowa’s Hospice” was achieved through his faith, hard work and family of employees. Much of the work done by Iowa Hospice is based on Mother Theresa’s teachings. Iowa Hospice provides support to patients and families who are suffering from life-limiting illness, including emotional and spiritual support, medical care, home health, help with daily living, music therapy, massage therapy
and respite care. Iowa Hospice admits patients 24 hours a day in 90 counties of Iowa. We are the largest hospice in Iowa, serving more than 400 patients. Our secret to being the Best of the Best is to put others before ourselves. Our motto is “Love in Action” on a daily basis. Our employees work diligently to help patients cherish the goodness of every day and appreciate the memories of the past. We are successful because of every single employee’s dedication to doing the right thing at the right time.
Iowa Hospice was awarded CHAP certification in 2009 for several of its sites, being the first hospice in Iowa to open with CHAP. We are open access and serve all, regardless of ability to pay. Persons electing palliative treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation, may be eligible for hospice as well. Iowa Hospice has a palliative care program for persons who may not qualify for hospice but wish to have assistance with education, pain and symptom management.

“We are honored by the votes of recognition and support from our many friends and clients,” said Mike Blanchard, owner of The CORE. began,” Blanchard said. “Back in the late 1980s, our primary goal was to let people know that comics weren’t just for kids,” mused Blanchard. “Today it has reversed — we want people to know that comics aren’t just for adults.” Blanchard regularly works with teachers, donating comics to get kids interested in reading. The CORE also carries games such as YuGi-Oh!, Axis & Allies, Settlers of Catan and many other popular tabletop games. Many evenings are scheduled for customers to try out and play games. The CORE has offered many unique gifts and collectibles over the years, from vintage Star Wars toys to original one-of-kind artwork by professional comic and animation artists. A large selection of high-end pop culture memorabilia including Star Wars, Star Trek and your favorite super-heroes are always on display. In this day of people increasingly buying over the Internet, it is a true pleasure to conduct business with so many wonderful and loyal clients everyday. Silver Eagle Harley-Davidson/Buell First Place: Motorcycle Silver Eagle Harley-Davidson/Buell has been recognized as the Cedar Valley’s Best of the Best since its inception. The store has two locations. The main store is located at the corner of U.S. Highways 63 and 20, and there is a store at Crossroads Center on the lower level next to Scheels. The mall store sells everything but bikes, and the merchandise is different from the main store. Harley-Davidson Motorclothes are made specifically for the rider. The materials are very high quality and always keep the rider in mind. “All the fashion magazines this year are featuring the black leather biker look. Sales manager Troy Walbaum said they have a large selection of bikes, both new and used, in colors, styles and sizes to fit everyone’s desires, from Sportsters, with an MSRP of $6,999, to the Touring Family and everything in between. The Silver Eagle Service Department has a slogan that they use throughout the year: “We take pride in your ride.” Performance work, upgrades and diagnostic testing are the most common, but they also go over and above with free pickup and delivery, and customers receive a respectably clean bike when work is complete.

These local events include charity opportunities, and they also sponsor countless activities in the Cedar Valley throughout the year. “We believe in the Cedar Valley. We believe in supporting our community by buying local and giving back to those in need. State Farm Insurance - Monte McCunniff First Place: Insurance Agent — Monte McCunniff On behalf of the Monte McCunniff State Farm Insurance Agency, we are very honored and proud to be voted the best insurance agency in the Cedar Valley area. I have always built my business striving to provide the best possible service to all of our clients. I started in the insurance business at the young age of 22 on March 1, 1962, out of a shoe box. I grew a list of clientele by following up on their auto and home renewal dates. People were usually surprised when I followed through with my promise to touch base with them in six months to a year. But this is how I built my business over the years with State Farm — great customer service with a reputable company. Giving personal attention to the families’ financial and insurance needs has been my primary goal since the beginning, and I have found that doing business the right way will result in my clients’ overall satisfaction and achieve their needs. I have worked very hard to
earn the trust of our clients, and we all know that is something that is not easily established in today’s environment. More than 47 years later, I own the Monte McCunniff State Farm Insurance Agency. Currently, I have a tremendously knowledgeable staff of five who each specialize in their discipline and, in my opinion, work together to form the best team. Brad, my son, has been with me for more than 20 years and aspires to someday continue this great legacy I have developed and grown with him. Julie and Dave have more than 20 years experience between them and primarily service our existing clients as well as the banking, health and long-term products we offer. Jon, our marketing specialist, helps our new clients become familiar with not only products offered by State Farm but also guides them to the Monte McCunniff service of all 96 products. Abby contributes to the office part time as she finishes her degree at the Universi-
ty of Northern Iowa. Every person on the staff contributes toward this full-service agency providing insurance and financial services to the best of their abilities and knowledge. We are not always the best price, but we service our clients with our knowledge and the intent to receive value. And let me be bold to say that if you value the service you have come to expect, it is invaluable to your peace of mind. I have been a long-time resident of Cedar Falls and have raised three children, Brad, Curt and Megan, with my ever-encouraging and supportive wife, Sonia. I always wanted to help people, and part of that ★ 1708 State St., Cedar Falls ★ 266-7533 ★ www.montemccunniff.com
inspiration came from my professor at Iowa State Teachers College, now known as UNI, who helped me focus my efforts and desire towards the financial services industry. I graduated from UNI with a bachelor’s degree in 1960. I was drafted into the Army shortly thereafter and served my country before embracing my career with State Farm. I enjoy spending my free time with family and friends doing what I have always longed to do — racquetball, fishing, hunting and boating. I have always strived to have a balance of work and home life that can reflect a happier person for both environments. Again, I would like to thank our clients and the people of this community for this great honor. We will continue to strive to provide the best 24/7 service with the utmost personal attention that our clients have come to expect.

others. This is a group of truly wonderful, dedicated and devoted practitioners, and having them recognized is truly exceptional. “These people chose these roles to work with others to provide the best possible care, not to be recognized,” Parsons said. “They focus on getting their patients better and getting them through the various stages of life. It is gratifying to know how others see them. “Recently, 20 new hires were asked why they wanted to work here,” she said. “A main reason they gave was because their own values and belief system matched with the values of the organization.” Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare includes: ■ Covenant Medical Center — Wheaton Franciscan H e a l t h c a r e ’s Covenant Medical Center t ra ce s its origins to 1912, when Franciscan Sisters founded St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo. Seventy-four years later, in 1986, the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters consolidated St. Francis Hospital with neighboring Schoitz Medical Center to form Covenant Medical Center. ■ Sartori Memorial Hospital — The hospital, the first in Cedar Falls, was owned by the city of Cedar Falls until 1996, when it joined Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. Dalton Plumbing Heating and Cooling First Place: Plumbing | Honorable Mention: Heating Dave Krejchi, president and owner of Dalton Plumbing Heating and Cooling, is honored once again with the Best of the Best recognition. “Our staff is committed to keeping our customers comfortable — whether it be cool in the summer or warm in the winter,” Krejchi said. “One person’s standard of ‘just right’ may be different for the next guy.” Dalton’s feels it is their job to custom design heating and cooling systems with the customer’s needs first, whether it be residential or commercial. Dalton’s recently celebrated their 50th anniversary of providing exceptional quality service to the Cedar Valley area. Their staff consists of certified, highly trained heating, cooling and plumbing technicians. They service all brands and types of equipment and carry top name brands such as Carrier, Rheem, Aprilaire, Kohler, WeilMcLain and Luxury Water Conditioning. Another area that Dalton’s has expanded is their drain-cleaning department. Plumbing manager Terry Hicks said, “We have a great group of highly skilled master and journeyman plumbers. Whether it be a new system or repairs, residential or commercial, they evaluate the situation and work quickly and efficiently to satisfy the customer’s requirements. “We want to thank our loyal customers for honoring us with Best of the Best plumber in the Cedar Valley for four years in a row and promise to go the extra mile to earn this great honor,” Hicks said. As attitudes around the world become greener, consumers are looking for cleaner, more efficient and cost-effective ways to satisfy their household energy needs. Dalton Plumbing Heating and Cooling is proud to be one of the first in the area to offer green solutions for concerned citizens. One product they offer is a hybrid heat dual fuel system. This system is designed to deliver maximum comfort and economy with an Infinity 96 gas furnace and Infinity 19 heat pump delivering heated air temperatures that are warmer to the

touch. Another product getting lots of attention these days is geothermal heat. “Geothermal energy not only costs less to operate but also helps preserve natural resources and lessens our dependency on fossil fuels,” Krejchi said. A geothermal or ground-source heat pump is an electrically powered device that uses the natural heat storage ability of the earth and the earth’s groundwater to heat and cool your home. Dalton’s is pleased to announce that they now offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly way to heat water — solar water heating. Using solar water heating technology can significantly reduce water heating costs for your home. Solar water heaters provide a clean, economical
alternative to natural gas, electric, oil and propane water heaters. Solar energy is an abundant, renewable resource that can fulfill energy needs in a way that saves money and protects the environment. Plumbing Manager Terry Hicks is a GREEN Plumber. This designation was presented to Hicks by the Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia. Recent renovations at Dalton’s include a fireplace showroom with 11 working models that provides customers with handson convenience in selecting the fireplace that is just right for their home. “Our goal at the end of each and every day is to have happy, ‘comfortable’ customers,” Krejchi said. “We thank you for your continued trust in us.”

Kimball & Beecher Family Dentistry Honorable Mention: Dentist Kimball & Beecher Family Dentistry is a general dentistry practice specializing in implants, IV sedation and nonsurgical periodontal therapy, a method of preventing gum disease. It is the first practice in Iowa to use the FDA-approved Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure to treat periodontal disease. This is Kimball & Beecher Family Dentistry’s first time being awarded a Best of the Best honor, and everyone at the practice is thankful for all of their patients and friends for their business and for helping to recognize them. Kimball & Beecher Family Dentistry has been serving patients in the area for four years. The practice, owned by Eric L. Kimball, DDS, and Beau M. Beecher, DDS, has two convenient locations, one on San Marnan Drive and one on E. Fourth St., as well as three dentists to serve patients: Dr. Kimball, Dr. Beecher and Dr. Brian Bouck. And with a staff of eighteen, the practice
is well-equipped to serve patients in the Cedar Valley. While Beecher has nine years of experience and Kimball has 10, Bouck has been treating patients for 30 years. The practice originally began as General Dentistry in 1979 with Dr. Bouck as the primary dentist and evolved into Kimball & Beecher Family Dentistry in 2004 with the addition of Dr. Kimball, Dr. Beecher and a second location. Dr. Kimball brings to the practice a specialty in cosmetic and implant dentistry, while Dr. Beecher has extensive training in cosmetic and laser dentistry and the treatment of sleep apnea. After leaving the practice in 2004 to do missionary work, Dr. Bouck returned to the practice in the summer of 2009 to resume treating patients. Bouck has served as a mentor for Dr. Beecher as both a dentist and family friend for many years and was an important reason why the latter went into dentistry to begin with. “We enjoy working with our hands, and, more importantly, we
enjoy making people smile,” Beecher said. The three dentists believe strongly in the importance of preventive care and teaching children from a young age how to take care of their teeth to avoid dental problems later in life. They also make participation and education in the community a priority through the clinic’s involvement in Mission of Mercy, a program which sets up free dental clinics to provide treatment to those who do not have dental coverage or cannot afford dental care. Kimball & Beecher believe the secret to being Best of the Best is giving their patients comprehensive dental care with flexible payment options, state-of-the-art technology, a caring staff, same-day appointments and a wide variety of services so the need to refer out is greatly reduced. They also believe in giving their patients all of the information and options available to them but respecting the final decision of the patient. But most importantly, the long-

During the last five years, Cu Restaurant has seen the whole of these changes between Lafayette and Mulberry streets with enthusiasm, support and an impassioned desire to keep those who have rediscovered downtown Waterloo returning again and again for a great dining experience. That “Distinctive Dining Experience,” as Cu is fond of calling it, has carved its niche out of the Cedar Valley’s landscape with a unique blend of intimate surroundings, including curtain-separated tables and high-back booths, along with attentive service by a knowledgeable staff. That casual fine dining niche has gotten more crowded over the past couple of years, but
Cu has remained fresh and vibrant in what had often been seen as a less than desirable location. Much of Cu Restaurant’s success has been in its ability to cater to its patrons’ needs. General manager Steve Cunningham said: “We want nothing here to be cookie cutter. In fact, we work very hard to take the next step with our customer’s expectations. Changing our menus seasonally, doing daily features for lunch and dinner, rotating styles, flavors and homemade desserts ensures that a dinner at Cu Restaurant can be as different as you want it to be with the great atmosphere, quality and service people have come to expect from us.” That culinary quality and creativity starts at the top with executive chef Mark Widmann. “If I wanted to reproduce someone else’s menu, I would go work for a chain,” he said. “I know that the quality and cre-

ativity at my restaurant is top notch. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t. I think it comes down to the freedom to provide your customers with what they want. If that means changing the preparation from what’s on the menu for someone or coming up with something we don’t normally have, I do it. Requests like that would get you a sideways glance at most places, for me that’s half the fun!” Fun is definitely the way to describe the Cu staff. Few restaurants can boast such a tight-knit group of employees. Many of the faces you may have seen four years ago are still with Cu, including the general manager, chef, sous chef, serving staff and cooks. “We have happy employees who care about their jobs and their customers,” Cunningham said. “We have been blessed with a great cast of hard workers here, and I think it shows when you are greeted at the front door, go downstairs for a cocktail or walk through the kitchen. U.S. Cellular First Place: Cell Phone Dealer As U.S. Cellular Iowa director of sales Don Cochran will tell you: “U.S. Cellular is not just in the business of connecting calls. We’re really in the business of connecting people. “Our secret to being Best of the Best is that we believe the most important thing about your phone is the person on the other end, and our associates will work harder than anyone to keep you connected to them,” Cochran said. U.S. Cellular has provided wireless service throughout Iowa for more than 20 years. There are 240-plus locations and more than 1,500 associates across Iowa. The company is continually enhancing and investing in its network to increase signal strength and provide additional capacity to cell phone users in the Cedar Valley area. A full team of local network engineers drive the entire coverage area to test signal strength and call quality, supporting a statewide network of more than 720 cell sites. Earlier this year, U.S. Cellular launched its 3G mobile broadband in the Cedar Valley and other markets across Iowa, bringing 3G speeds to more than 90 percent of the state. 3G delivers DSL-like speeds that allow customers to access data on cell phones or wireless modems 10 times faster than before. 3G mobile broadband allows customers to download applications and send and receive picture and video messages more quickly. “Browsing the Web on a smartphone is now very similar to the experience on a computer, with faster speeds and larger e-mail attachment capability,” said Nicole Knebel, store manager for U.S. Cellular’s Crossroads Center location. “We will continue to enhance our products and services to be sure our customers have the best possible experience with the handsets and smartphones that keep them connected to friends, family and business associates,” Cochran said. U.S. Cellular has a wide range of month-
ly plans, including those with unlimited nationwide calling. “Most plans have unlimited free incoming calls, which accounts for nearly half the time customers spend on their phones,” Cochran said. The company boasts a growing lineup of phones, including a variety of smartphone devices and touchscreen handsets that offer e-mail and Web access as well as music, camera and video capabilities. U.S. Cellular’s exclusive My Contacts Backup automatically protects the valuable contact information stored in a customer’s mobile phone and allows easy transfer of those contacts to a new phone. All backup functions occur wirelessly, so customers never need to plug the phone into a computer. “Best of all, My Contacts Backup is free for all U.S. Cellular customers to download. In addition, the My Contacts Backup Web site allows you to view, manage, edit and print your contacts from your PC. You can import Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express and Yahoo contacts to your new phone or remotely erase contacts from a lost or stolen device so your contacts never fall into the wrong hands,” said Allison Shredl, store manager for U.S. Cellular’s Cedar Falls location. In the last two years, U.S. Cellular has donated more than $550,000 in charitable funds and United Way contributions to nonprofit organizations throughout Iowa and the Cedar Valley. U.S. Cellular also is proud to serve as the official wireless provider for the University of Northern Iowa Panthers. U.S. Cellular’s Calling All Communities campaign launches again on Nov. 13, giving 10 schools around the country a chance to win $100,000 each. “I would like to offer a very special thank you to everyone in the Cedar Valley who voted U.S. Cellular the Best of the Best. We also congratulate our associates for all their efforts that keep us the area’s best wireless provider,” Cochran said.

Community Motors First Place: Auto Dealership | Honorable Mention: Auto Body Repair Community Motors Inc. specializes in outstanding customer service. “What makes us unique is our commitment to quality service and selection,” said owner Jim Skarlis, whose longtime interest in cars has kept him in the business for 32 years. The company’s secret to success is its high number of employees who have been with the company for more than five years. “I think that speaks highly of the kind of dealership we want to be,” Skarlis said. “It also benefits our customers in that our people are committed to them for the long term, have unsurpassed product knowledge and there is a true and honest team effort to make their experience here at Community Motors an enjoyable one. “We want you to come back, and we’re going to be here when you do.”
Community Motors customers can select their new Chevrolet, Buick or quality used car at the dealership, or the Internet department can help simplify the purchase process by beginning it online. “We are here to make sure we get as much of the legwork — and paperwork — possible done in advance, so delivery of your vehicle will be speedy and simple. We are well aware of the needless time and effort many people spend to buy a car. Many dealerships make this process too difficult,” Skarlis said. To help make service appointments more convenient, Community Motors offers to take customers where they need to go and bring them back. Factory-trained and ASE certified technicians are on staff to maintain and service vehicles and get the job done right the first time with GM Goodwrench service.
The company offers a three-level parts department plus an extra warehouse for wholesale parts storage. Parts trucks run Monday through Thursday to deliver parts when customers need them. The Pro Shop has been stocked with NASCAR and Chevrolet collectibles, including a large stock of GM caps. Community Motors offers financing made easy. It has contracted with nearly 20 banks, credit unions and finance institutions to find the best option for customers’ finance needs. Two finance managers are on staff with more than 30 years of automotive experience. Applications may be submitted online. Skarlis expressed appreciation to current customers for helping make Community Motors the Best of the Best. “We will continue to make every effort to deserve this honor,” he said.

Skogman Homes Skogman Homes has been in business for more than 60 years. The company has built homes in many different areas across the state of Iowa but, for the last 35 years, has concentrated on the metro areas of Cedar Rapids and especially the Cedar Valley for the past seven years. Over this time, Skogman Homes has built more than 10,000 homes in Cedar Rapids and, in seven years in the Cedar Valley, has completed close to 200 homes. Kevin Fittro, vice president of Skogman Homes, has lived in the Cedar Valley over the course of the seven years and managed this area of construction. Skogman Homes, while building in price ranges varying from $180,000 to $600,000, has been able to offer on a consistent basis a good home carrying all of today’s amenities in the average price range of $285,000. Its plans, which are constantly reworked
to keep up with today’s families, are built in a system with quality subcontractors that keep your possession date on time and homes built to your expectations. Along with the company’s award-winning plans, its home tracking communication tool gives you online access 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world that has Internet access. The state grant acquired by the city will provide a 30 percent forgivable loan, up to a $54,000 on a $180,000 home. Call Skogman Homes for more details.

Fereday Heating
Bike Tech
Honorable Mention: Heating/Cooling
Bike Tech has been in business for 14 years, and owner Brent Johnson has been in the business for almost 10 years. “We offer high value, high quality bicycles, parts, accessories and, most importantly, service,” Johnson said. Johnson said the secret to the business’s success is giving back to the cycling community in terms of advocacy and sponsorship of community events. Bike Tech is an active member of many local, statewide and national advocacy organizations dedicated to enhancing facilities and protecting the rights of cyclists. A previous Best of the Best winner, Bike Tech also was recently awarded the League of American Bicyclists, Bicycle Friendly Business, Bronze Level. “We treat each customer’s bike as if it were our own,” Johnson said.
Fereday Heating Co. is celebrating its 100th year as a Lennox dealer this year, having provided the best HVAC products and service to their customers for ten decades. Success through a century of change, says Tom Fereday, stems largely from simply treating people fairly. “It’s all about being fair with people, selling at a fair price,” Tom said. “And if someone calls us with a problem, we take care of it.” It also helps to have the business in your blood. “Even when I was in college, I pretty much knew this was what I wanted to do,” Tom said, now in his 40th year in the business. “Our working philosophy has been and always will be to provide the best products and services to our customers at a competitive price.” Tom’s son, Charlie, currently vice president and part of the company’s fourth generation of Fereday leadership, has pro-
vided direction in giving the company a strong marketing presence, including the Internet. Tom strongly believes it’s hard to sell from an empty cart. “It’s very seldom we don’t have a part for a Lennox unit. People don’t want us to come back because we don’t have the part they need. We can usually completely change out a furnace within 24 hours of getting the call.” Fereday recently received the “Save Some Green” energy award from MidAmerica Energy Co. for being a top seller of high-efficiency equipment in the metro area. As the times have changed, so has Fereday — but always driven by its basic philosophy of treating customers and employees fairly. “I love what we do here,” Tom said. “Charlie and I are so proud to join our employees and community in celebrating Fereday’s successful 100-year journey.”

Rydell Chevrolet Honorable Mention: Oil Change Service, Used Auto Dealership “Bottom Line Pricing” is a hallmark at Rydell Chevrolet Mitsubishi. Prices are marked right on the windshields. No pushy sales people, no high pressure, no negotiating and no game playing. It’s an ethical and easy way of doing business, and it serves our customer. The price you pay for a car has nothing to do with a customer’s negotiating skills or who they are — that’s not the way Rydell wants to do business. Studies done by J.D. Powers and Associates and other research groups have determined most people dread the automobile buying experience. The stress and the time involved with purchasing a vehicle makes lots of folks uncomfortable. Rydell has changed all that. They believe buying a vehicle should be fun and stress free. Customers are treated in a friendly, professional and courteous manner. Like any business, Rydell wants to sell vehicles, but “Bottom Line Price” is not a gim-

Barmuda Sometimes you have to take a step back before you can start moving forward. Last year at this time, Barmuda and its fleet of restaurants, nightclubs and lounges were picking up the pieces of a destroyed corporate headquarters and breathing a sigh of relief that the Cedar River did not breach Main Street in Cedar Falls. The natural disaster had the food and beverage company against the ropes and fighting for survival, much like the rest of the community it has been a part of for two decades. Instead of dwelling on their losses, Barmuda sprung to action by creating a fundraising event for those affected by the floods and tornado that devastated many lives. Barmuda ended 2008 on a high note by winning 41 awards in the Best of the Best competition and with the opening of Bourbon Street and Voodoo Lounge in Grinnell. The company has carried the momentum from the previous year into 2009 as Barmuda recently moved into the new multimilliondollar business complex Phantom Park with T8 Design, Phantom EFO and 8monkey Labs. Barmuda also launched Roux Orleans Bourbon Street Grille, Bourre Lounge and Sky Event Centre, a $2 million dining and entertainment project located in the Black’s Building in downtown Waterloo. “It’s amazing to see where we are today compared to last year at this time,” said Matt Smiley, Barmuda COO. “The flood really puts things into perspective for all of us and helped us focus on where we wanted the company to go from here,” said Barmuda Companies CEO and owner Darin Beck. “The stress and worry that I had experienced a year ago seemed so dreadful at the time. This year, things are very different. Even with the economic downturn, we have been able to remain focused and grow our business. We’ve been hiring when most are

Since the Best of the Best awards began, Barmuda’s establishments have faired well every year, including 31 new awards this year. “It’s a testament to the leaders and systems we have in place,” Beck said. “I couldn’t be happier or more proud of the success that we have had over the years with the awards. The community seems to like and support what we are doing. What more could a guy want?” Known for the bold flavors of its cajun, creole and American menu, Bourbon Street has not rested on its laurels. “We have made some serious changes to our menu, adding new items and lowering price points,” said Jocelyn Williams, Bourbon Street and Voodoo Lounge general manager. “We’ve had a great response.” Bourbon Street’s atmosphere certainly meets its spicy personality. “Bourbon Street has a lot of energy,” Williams said. “It’s a great beginning to a night out.” Voodoo Lounge, located directly above Bourbon Street, carries the energy from the restaurant late
into the evening. It also secured a few awards. The stylish lounge features entertainment like live music and karaoke throughout the week. “We love to see the look on people’s faces the first time they see a Voodoo Mist,” Williams said. “They are shocked to see the huge mixed drink being served with smoke rolling out of it.” The Beck’s brand might be the definition of consistent success in terms of the Best of the Best contest. “Beck’s success is an accomplishment that makes me proud,” said Kyle Dehmlow, vice president of operations of the Beck’s brand, along with Joker’s, Shags, Mojo’s and Ice. “When a person thinks of burgers and sports, we want them thinking Beck’s everytime.” Soho Sushi Bar and Deli and The Stuffed Olive won a series of awards in the 2009 contest. Their eclectic menu and food presentation style has opened the Cedar Valley up to a diverse dining experience. Although Soho and The Stuffed Olive are two different concepts, both menus are available at each restaurant and complement each other. The Stuffed Olive places an emphasis on top-notch martinis
along with European influenced tapas. Soho Sushi Bar and Deli uses a fresh-first approach to sandwiches, salads and sushi. Ferrari’s Ristorante specializes in steak, seafood and Italian cuisine. “We have been battling a lot of misconceptions about Ferrari’s since it opened and feel we are starting to break those barriers,” said Joel Smits, Ferrari’s general manager. “We have items priced for any budget. You can wear jeans and feel comfortable. It’s just a great dining experience with outstanding food and service.” Smits highlighted Ferrari’s prix fixe menu, created every Wednesday by the chefs. The menu features a soup or appetizer, salad, entree and dessert for $19.99. “It’s a perfect example of our chefs’ talent combined with an amazing price.” Barmuda’s Catering division qualified for the Best of the Best awards last year for the first time. “Receiving honorable mention our first year of launching catering was a huge surprise, but getting first place this year is incredible,” said Smiley. Barmuda’s nightlife venues are as strong as ever with Ice Ultra Lounge and Mojo’s Pizza House helping breathe life back into College Hill with their risque events and parties geared to the student populous. Joker’s Comedy Night Club and Shags bring in talented entertainment into the Cedar Valley. Joker’s has live comedy on Fridays and Saturdays and the occasional special event show on a weeknight. A few times a year, Shags features high-profile DJs from larger markets and continually pushes the dance music threshold. So what’s the next step for the Barmuda Companies? “Franchising,” Beck said. “I would love to see the Barmuda brands become part of another great American success story. That’s the vision, that’s the goal.”
