Latest hydrotherapy pool expands options for healing JASON BRIDIE

Care Initiatives ‌

‌The new Pinnacle Specialty Care was designed with an added emphasis on rehabilitation services to help people get well and go home. One of the new features of Pinnacle Specialty Care is a hydrotherapy pool (aquatic pool) specifically designed for use by certified therapists to help with the therapy and rehabilitation needs of patients. Hydrotherapy isn’t a new concept, but it’s relatively new in the Cedar Valley. Pinnacle Specialty Care’s hydrotherapy pool is only the second pool of its kind in this area.

What is hydrotherapy?‌

Hydrotherapy is physical therapy that takes place in a pool or other aquatic environment under the supervision of a trained healthcare professional. Hydrotherapy is also known as water therapy, aquatic rehabilitation, aqua therapy, pool therapy, therapeutic aquatic exercise or aquatic therapy. Common goals of hydrotherapy programs include: Improving flexibility Improving balance and coordination Building muscle strength and endurance Enhancing aerobic capacity Assisting with gait and lo-

comotion Reducing stress and promoting relaxation Hydrotherapy is different from aquatic exercise or aquatic fitness because it is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialty that requires the involvement of a trained professional and is covered by many insurance providers due to the personalized nature of the treatment. Hydrotherapy should not be confused with adaptive aquatics, either. Adaptive aquatics is the process of teaching people with disabilities how to swim safely in the water. Aquatic therapy does not focus on teaching clients how to swim.

Why would a patient want to utilize hydrotherapy?‌ The benefits of hydrotherapy are vast. The natural healing properties of water with advanced aquatic therapy technology such as the underwater treadmill, resistance therapy jets and deep tissue massage are all used to achieve advanced results. For one, the buoyancy of the water can reduce a person’s body weight by up to 90 percent, allowing the patient a way to move and safely begin rehabilitation, sometimes earlier than they would a land-based therapeutic program. The lowered weight-bearing can reduce a sense of fear of falling or reinjuring thus providing a higher level of confidence for the patient.

Pain is also greatly reduced when exercising in warm water. An individual bearing less weight reduces the stress on their legs and joints. The warm water acts as an aid for sore swollen or injured joints and muscles resulting in less pain for the individual, increased range of motion and improved compliance with the program. The hydrotherapy pool has an underwater treadmill as well. This treadmill works in tandem with therapy jets, creating a light resistance which aids in muscle strengthening. The hydrotherapy pool at Pinnacle Specialty Care has adjustable water depth controls, allowing a patient to step onto the pool treadmill or platform at zero depth. The therapist gently lowers the pool floor to an ac-

ceptable depth tailored to the patient’s therapy plan. The therapists at Pinnacle Specialty Care plan to utilize the hydrotherapy pool as an added tool to help their post-acute skilled nursing patients recover from injury, surgery, or illness with the goal of getting well and going home. Use of hydrotherapy in conjunction with Pinnacle’s stateof-the-art therapy gym and Accelerated Care Plus (ACP) therapy equipment, provided by certified therapists, provides patients with the confidence their recovery is the best it can be. Anyone interested in learning more about Pinnacle Specialty Care is encouraged to call (319)268-0489) for a tour of the building and the therapy wing.

“We are an organization which offers compassionate individualized care during life’s health transitions. This means providing everything from postacute skilled nursing care, to rehabilitation services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, to long term care to hospice care.”

‌Care Initiatives is proud of its commitment to the Cedar Valley. The commitment was made more than 26 years ago, when the company was first founded. Care Initiatives acquired Wind sor in Cedar Falls (now Pinnacle), Ravenwood and Parkview in Waterloo (now NorthCrest), and La Porte City Nursing & Rehab Center. They started Care Initiatives Hospice in 2008 serving the Cedar Valley, as well as 66 counties throughout Iowa. “Our mission as a non-profit organization in the Cedar Valley is to improve the quality of life for Iowans and their families during life’s health transitions through compassionate indiMiles King, Care Initiatives CEO vidualized care,” said Care Initiatives CEO Miles King. The replacement of Windsor with a brand-new building in a new location “completes our long-range plan to offer highlevel rehabilitation services, post-acute skilled nursing care, long-term care and hospice care to the Cedar Valley,” King added. The Care Initiatives philosophy is simple. “We are an organization which offers compassionate individualized care during life’s health transitions. This means providing everything from post-acute skilled nursing care, to rehabilitation services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, to long term care to hospice care,” said King.

What is non-profit Care Initiatives? ‌Created in 1989, Care Initiatives is the largest single operator of quality nursing homes in Iowa. Care Initiatives proudly serves over 3,000 Iowans through 44 skilled nursing care locations, eight assisted living locations, three senior housing apartment locations, and six hospice office locations. Our home office is located in West Des Moines. We are committed to providing compassionate care for Iowans through all of life’s health transitions. All of our facilities are Intermediate Care Facilities as well as Skilled Nursing Facilities, providing regular medical, nursing, social and rehabilitative services. All of our facilities also provide professional nursing care for those who need 24-hour nursing services. All Care Initiatives locations are: Licensed by the state of Iowa
