COLLEGE GUIDE SPRING 2023

STEP-BY-STEP

Finding the right place to land in the college search can be frustrating, stressful and confusing.

Play it smart with a step-by-step approach:

STEP 1. Ask yourself: What do I want? Exactly what do I expect from my education?

Once you have a rough idea in mind about where you want to go and what you want to achieve, start looking at schools that can deliver. You may already have a few schools in mind to start.

Your list may grow longer, but begin narrowing down choices in your junior year. By the time your senior year rolls around, the list should be narrowed to your top two to five or six schools. The application process can take time and create stress, so relieve the pressure by NOT overapplying.

List these schools on your finan-

cial aid applications, ACT or SAT registrations, and other forms.

Check out admission requirements. Are you able to meet all of them?

Apply to more than one school on your list. Visit the schools’ websites to find out what forms you need to fill out and deadlines for submissions. Applications can be filled out online or on paper. Most schools o er both, but some colleges may have a preference for submissions. Colleges may also have rolling admissions deadlines, which means you can apply at any

time throughout the year. Does the school accept the Common Application? It’s a standard form accepted by about 300 colleges. Also, make sure to fill out any supplemental forms required by the college.

STEP 2. Take time to attend a college fair.

It’s like a shopping mall for college candidates. Students and their parents can visit briefly with college admissions representatives from participating colleges and universities, community and tech-

nical schools and military service branches. Gather up materials on the college and get a “feel” for what each college o ers.

Go with a list of questions specific to your interests to ask at each booth. Introduce yourself to the admissions o cers and get on their email and regular mailing lists.

Take advantage of any workshops o ered on the search process, etc.

STEP 3 . Look at cost — but don’t freak out.

College costs money. Sometimes a lot of it, but don’t let that be a roadblock in your desire to attend college.

A lot of award letters arrive during March and April, typically with acceptance letters, and include scholarships, grants and student loans.

Read these letters carefully and figure out how much you’d need to pay for each school. Really take time to decipher how much you’re going to pay out of pocket to attend the school. Ask your school counselor to help with these award letters.

Be realistic about school options — especially when it comes to money. Make a good, educated decision with your family about what you can a ord.

Financial aid is available for many students, but you have to fill out the FAFSA form to find out if you qualify, and for how much. And you’ll have to fill out those forms and reapply each year you enroll in an institution of higher learning.

Grant aid from federal and state governments, institutional funds and private sources, as well as scholarships can lower the net price for a majority of college students.

STEP 4. Making the grade is more than a grade point average. Grades can measure success and focus. Don’t skip out on your classes. Put in the e ort and study. Taking college-level advance placement courses and completing challenging classes improves your potential.

Find activities or sports that make you feel fulfilled and give them the attention they deserve. Don’t sign up for lots of extracurricular activities just to pad your application.

Five steps to reduce stress on your college search

STEP 5: Make the most of a campus visit. You don’t have to visit every college on your list, but see enough to develop a clear sense of preferences.

See schools farther from home first if you will not be able to later in the year, or start close to home and see a select group of schools farther away during senior fall.

Develop a timetable to be prompt for tours or appointments. Don’t forget to make hotel accommodations if you and your parents need to stay overnight.

Dress appropriately. Show that you take the college or interview seriously.

Talk to faculty, coaches and students involved in the activities that interest you.

Here are some questions to ask when visiting a prospective college: How long, on average,

does it take students to graduate?

What is the student/faculty ratio? Does the faculty include teaching assistants or do professors teach the majority of classes?

What is the placement rate? Do most students who graduate obtain a job in their field? Do they get admitted to grad school? Do employers do on-campus job re-

cruiting?

What housing options and student facilities, such as health center, athletic center libraries, are available?

Are there student employment opportunities either on or off campus? Will I need a car?

What types of meal plans are available? What types of options are available besides the dining hall?

Waldorf University is going back to their roots as a private, faithbased, tax-exempt organization after finalizing the transfer of ownership to the Waldorf Lutheran College Foundation on Dec. 1, 2022.

Founded in 1903 after The Waldorf Hotel became vacant because of “The Great Hotel War of Forest City,”

Reverend C.S. Salveson gathered the recourses to fund a Christian College that is now known as Waldorf University In Waldorf’s earliest days, it viewed education sponsored by the church as vital for people who served our communities, on the belief that human life is a gift from God and the educational enterprise offers the opportunity for the cultivation of your full potential. Waldorf was a Junior College until 2001, when Waldorf became a fully accredited bachelor’s degree-granting college

While the college was doing everything to thrive and keep its head above water during the

BACK TO OUR ROOTS

Great Recession, it found itself in a predicament of possibly closing its doors Luckily in 2010, God brought Columbia Southern Education Group (CSEG) to Forest City, Iowa and Waldorf was acquired as the family’s first traditional campus school. With the heart of Waldorf and the backing of CSEG, we established a significant online presence that offers students worldwide an opportunity to earn associate, bachelor’s, master’s and certificate programs. During the ownership of CSEG, the Waldorf Lutheran College Foundation continued to support Waldorf through alumni relations, scholarships and campus ministry.

Without the help of CSEG and every part of our Waldorf Family, we couldn’t have become what we are today and have the honor to teach both old and young “Lux et Veritas,” which reads “Light and Truth,” the official motto on the seal of Waldorf University. As we return to our roots,

we can uphold the strong Lutheran traditions of excellence and continue to honor our values of serving our community, academic excellence, freedom of inquiry, liberating education and learning through the open exchange of ideas. All the prayers, hard work and resilience have led us here to today, where we can proudly say we are returning to our roots Our mission statement declares Waldorf University educates the entire person, equipping students for lives of fulfillment in communities where they live and serve As we return to our roots, Waldorf University aspires to be distinctive, affordable, values drive, innovative and digital. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get back to our roots and for being a substantial part of our journey and the Waldorf Family We can’t wait for you to become a part of the Waldorf Family and the great things that are happening here Visit waldorf edu to see the exceptional experiences Waldorf University has to offer

Access, education and support vital to close gender gap in tech careers

BRANDPOINT

While women make up approximately half of the U.S. workforce, they are underrepresented in the technology sector, making up 28% of the industry. These numbers are even lower for women of color seeking opportunities in the field, with 3% of computing-related jobs being filled by African American women, 6% by Asian women and 2% by Hispanic women. Conversations often focus on empowering diverse voices to ensure they are represented in society. While these conversations raise awareness, they may not result in action and shifting the narrative surrounding diverse hiring practices. Diversity becomes a guide for program development to ensure diverse and female students feel supported in their pursuit of tech-related jobs, helping to address the gender gap in the industry.

To address the gender and diversity disparities, women must have access to resources and learning opportunities that give them the skill sets and confidence to pursue tech careers. Higher education institutions can play a significant role in bridging the gap. Creating greater awareness of job opportunities in the tech industry, potential career paths and sharing how to attain the necessary skills provides emerging talent with a clear trajectory for a future career in tech.

Higher education institutions can design inclusive programming.

In higher education, diversity is often thought of as the physical makeup of the student body. But diversity also extends beyond demographic data to how students learn – taking into consideration the tools they need to succeed. These tools can come in the form of academic success teams or

programming rooted in uplifting diverse students to help them achieve their academic and professional goals.

Higher education institutions are tasked with providing the most current and industry-relevant education to students to augment a work-ready pool of talent. To be successful in this mission for all students, institutions can use adaptive programs to close the opportunity gap for female and diverse students. An example of a curriculum informed by student need is DeVry University’s Women + Tech Scholars Program, which was established to increase female representation in the tech field by providing women with tools, support and resources such as:

access to mentors, early access to industry-related internships and job opportunities and industry association memberships.

Providing more women with a seat at the table helps to advance the tech industry.

Despite increased efforts to diversify a traditionally homogenous workforce, nearly 70% of tech companies report a lack of diverse representation in their workforce. In 2020, Google reported that 5.5% of new hires during that year were Black. Creating a more diverse tech workforce can lead to greater opportunities for collaboration because new perspectives are brought to the forefront that were previously unrepresented—driving innovation, creativity and pro-

ductivity.

“Considering the current workforce and the growing need for tech talent, the share of diverse and female tech employees remains at alarmingly low levels,” said Randi Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media.

Diversity of thought enhances problem-solving exercises because teams are mitigating the potential of finding themselves in an echo chamber of a singular thought derived from similar opinions. Studies suggest that companies that prioritize gender or racial and ethnic diversity are more likely to see financial returns that are above national industry averages.

Higher education institutions

have an opportunity to create supportive networks and communities.

Seeing someone from a similar background succeeding in a career path builds awareness. Higher education institutions that create opportunities for women to network and build connections with leaders they can identify with increase the chance of success in these highly sought-after, influential industries.

Carving out unique, defined spaces in which diverse and female communities can feel a sense of belonging helps increase overall academic performance, persistence and academic success, which can translate into professional success post-graduation.
