on the cover
Paco Rosic & Gary Kelley The Cedar Valley is home to a number of accomplished artists including Gary Kelley of Cedar Falls and Paco Rosic of Waterloo. For the second straight year, these two painters collaborated to create the image on the front cover of this guide. Last year’s image of cyclists enjoying outdoor dining, helped propel the guide to state-wide recognition by being named Iowa’s Outstanding Tourism Publication. This year, the artists focused on the river, an important and beautiful feature that ties both communities together. Both projects illustrate the beauty achieved by collaboration. Both men have individual styles and perspectives, yet they came together to create something beautiful and unique – much like the collaboration that occurs in the Cedar Valley. Paco painted the left half of the cover with aerosol cans of acrylic color. He has elevated this specialty of graffiti art to a new level and it’s on view nightly at his family’s restaurant, Galleria de Paco. The artist is a native of Sarajevo, Bosnia, and lived for a time in Germany before migrating to the United States as a boy. www.cedarfallstourism.org
By contrast, Gary Kelley is a native Iowan and an internationally recognized illustrator. He’s been a regular contributor to Rolling Stone, Playboy, Atlantic Monthly and many other publications, and he created the ubiquitous author murals seen in Barnes & Noble bookstores nationwide. In is downtown Cedar Falls studio, Gary conceived and sketched our cover image on a large canvas before handing it off to Paco, who then worked his aerosol magic on the left half of it. Next, Paco returned the unfinished art to Gary, who completed the right side of it in his more traditional oil painting technique. The result was a unique challenge to these two skilled painters from different generations and different cultures. And if you ask either of them, despite these differences, two things they’ll always have in common are a passion for Picasso and a passion for their own personal art.

In addition to the exciting things to see and do in the Cedar Valley, the surrounding area offers memorable experiences too, like the John Ernest Vineyard and Winery near Tama.
nearby AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE Northeast Iowa offers a wide and wonderful variety of attractions showcasing the agricultural heritage of our area. Travel south of the metropolitan area on highway 218 to La Porte City, where you will find the FFA Historical and Agricultural Museum. Heartland Acres Agribition Center is located to the east on Highway 20 in Independence. The small community of Hazelton is north of Independence and offers shopping opportunities and a glimpse of life in an Amish community. A short drive to the south, in Hudson, you’ll find Heritage Farm, where large Percheron horses pull wagons to a cabin in the woods for a special time with Santa during the holidays. Tours of Hansen’s Dairy Farm await you in Hudson as well, where you can milk a cow, make butter and see wallabies while learning about this family operated commercial farm operation. FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT Fans of Frank Lloyd Write have two great opportunities to experience his work by traveling just a short distance from the Cedar Valley. Cedar Rock State Park is located just off highway 20 to the east. The Walter House is an example of one of Wright’s most complete designs. Nearly everything in the house bears his imprint. The Stockman House is located in Mason City, less than 90 minutes to the north on highway 218, and is the first Iowa building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. THE BARN QUILTS TOURS You’ll find many of the barns in Black Hawk and Grundy Counties adorned with brightly painted Quilts. ADDITIONAL SITES TO VISIT Nashua is home to the Little Brown Church in the Vale where thousands have been married and return every summer for a reunion picnic and vow renewal ceremony. The Field of Dreams was filmed just an hour to the east of the Cedar Valley in the small community of Dyersville. The movie site still exists surrounded by family farms and rolling hills of Northeast Iowa. Visitors can bring their bats and gloves and have a game of catch, just as Kevin Coster did on the same field. Dyersville is also home to the National Farm Toy Museum and the Basilica of St. Xavier, which is one of only 52 in the United States. IOWA WINE AND BEER TOURS Wine and beer lovers alike will find a lot to toast to when they tour Iowa’s numerous wineries and breweries. Unforgettable road trips amid rolling countryside take you to locations within the Upper Mississippi Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) – one of the largest designated wine grapegrowing regions in the United States. Delicious handcrafted ales, lagers and stouts await you at one of the many breweries found in inviting communities across Iowa. See www.IowaWineAndBeer.com for more information.

Activities on campus are plentiful for both students and the community. The university offers a full calendar of fine-and performingarts events offered by music and theatre students, many of which take place in the acoustically outstanding Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
