COLOR
RULES!
USING “LIVING CORAL”
1. Paint an accent wall, a cupboard, cabinet or kitchen island base. 2. Pair with favorite neutrals like shades of gray. Or go bold with navy and ‘Living Coral.’ 3. Introduce the color through artwork, an area rug, housewares, upholstery.
Masterbrand cabinets “Urban Coral” kitchen
Living coral Life-affirming and nurturing — those two words are used to describe Pantone’s color of the year, “Living Coral.” The tropically-inspired sunset (or peachy) color is supposed to offer “comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment,” according to Pantone. But what about the environment we call home? Laurie Pressman, Pantone’s vice president, describes ‘Living
Coral’ as “emotional nourishment. It’s a big hug,” she said in an Associated Press report. Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams describes “Living Coral” as “a beautiful and upbeat color that makes a great accent. It’s a warm, bright and vibrant color that could be overwhelming on four walls, but try it for pops of color as an accent wall.” A front door, a kitchen island
or cabinet, or a hallway adjacent to neutral rooms are other possibilities. “It looks lovely paired with neutrals, and coral and navy is a stunning combination that I absolutely love. Gray is still an important color for home interiors and coral is a great companion color to update gray,” Wadden explains. Christine Martin from Marvin Windows and Doors says,

“Rather than specific design styles ruling the day, we’re seeing a preference for colors, shapes and textures that make us happy – and ‘Living Coral’ might be just the pop of delight a space needs to come to life.” Susan Chandler, a trend expert and buyer at Art.com, thinks the vibe creates a cheery and upbeat space. “Hang a picture inspired by this hue where you’ll see it often — the kitchen, bathroom or entryway are great options — to channel its warmth where you need it.” The Pantone color choice is applauded by Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets. “We have started to see a rise of personal color preferences making their way back into cabinetry as accent areas, small appliances and decor, and this is a very useable color tone,” she says. Renee Hytry Derrington says “Living Color” is “ideal to represent the heart of the home and bold enough for modern interiors. Formica Laminate’s ‘Clementine’ is a slightly deeper version.” Derrington is global design lead at Formica Group. SW’s “Coral Reef SW 6606” is close to Pantone’s “Living Coral” (Pantone 16-1546), but Wadden is also thrilled with SW’s own color of the year choice, “Cavern Clay (SW 7701), a rich terra-cotta color. “It’s an earthier, bolder color. In the last five years or so, we’ve spent a lot of time in ‘gray land,’ so we’re re-introducing the use of color. You can try it in small doses in your home and experiment with a richer, deeper color.” Source: Associated Press, Tribune News Service and CVHG interviews

‘N ight Watch” — a rich, luxurious and classic shade of green — is the PPG 2019 color of the year. Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager says, “’Night Watch’ is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through color. The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.” She suggest using the color as an accent wall in a bedroom or dining room, or it “can be especially impactful in places without any view or tie to the outdoors.” For exteriors, it is an alternative to black or blue-black, and works well as an accent on doors and shutters. “Garden Patch,” reflecting growing optimism in the U.S., is Dutch Boy Paints’ color of the year. It is described as a green that is not too deep or too primary. Rather, it is a nostalgic botanical hue that stands out for its warm and calming effect. Paired with soft naturals and pops of warm color, “Garden Patch is a great color to use in all areas of the home,” says Rachel Skafidas, color and design manager for

hen we asked interior designers about the colors, fabrics and styles likely to be popular this year, one message came through loud and clear: People are seeking comfort at home. But rather than casual, farmhouse-style comfort, these designers are seeing a trend toward a sophisticated, elegant comfort achieved through things like warm wall colors, antique wooden items with a patina of age, and rounded corners on furniture. Along with the physical coziness these items bring, many folks seem to be seeking a degree of emotional comfort in their home decor. We’ve asked New York-based furniture and wallcovering designer Brett Beldock and two other interior designers — Washington D.C.-based Marika Meyer and New Yorker Dan Mazzarini — for details on what we’ll see in home design in the coming year.

COMFORTING SPACES
For years, Americans were in love with open floor plans and large furniture. Now, “people want more intimately scaled spaces,” says Mazzarini. “Not Victorian-small, but not this kind of ‘everything open’ living.” Along the way, the color palette is becoming equally cozy. Popular neutral colors have “been so cool for a number of years,” Meyer says. As 2019 approaches, “we’re coming back into more warm neutrals.” And Beldock sees furniture shapes changing: We’re seeing a return to rounded edges and pieces of furniture with big, soft, rounded arms.

harleston, a historic farmhouse located in East Sussex in southern England, is considered a marvel of color and pattern, and far from the conventions of interior design in the early 20th century. Our vignette is a modern twist on this style of farmhouse decor. It has the spontaneity of the original and the unexpected with storytelling characteristics — and color! In this age of whites and neutrals, don’t be afraid to use color! We used a vintage sofa with velvet upholstery to anchor this setting. The choice gives the room patina and character usually not found with newly purchased furnishings. A playful new Spicher rug, based on historic linoleum floor designs, adds more vintage appeal. (You’ll find these rugs in an abundance of colors and patterns at Fig & Frolic.) Or choose a rug you like that fits with the effect you want. Mix modern pieces with vintage to keep the room from looking too much like a thrift store or museum. The “Darling” and striped pillows introduce a contemporary touch and updates the old-fashioned elegant purple velvet couch. An antique wooden door with its details and the carved molding on the portrait frame are whimsical additions. Layering is important. We created an interesting effect by hanging the portrait from an old window. Make some unexpected color combinations — black and white paired with purple, a lively green and wood tones enliven our Charleston look. Last, but far from least, we constructed an art piece from scrap wood pieces. You probably have them left over from projects, or know someone who does. There’s so much joy to creating something with your own hands and imagination.
22 | c v-h g.com
For this wall hanging, we incorporated small bits of color found in larger elements in the vignette. This helps blend together the overall style and avoids that “matchy-matchy” effect. You’ll find the Charleston color palette
in Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan, in a trio of new colors — “Firle,” “Tilton” and “Rodmell,” available at Fig & Frolic.

The kitchen, for example, is the heart of the open-concept design, big enough for the owners’ large, extended family to gather, but also convenient for whipping up sandwiches for supper. Weathered old Chicago brick forms the backsplash, a perfect counterpoint to marble countertops — “we don’t mind seeing the wear-and-tear that marble gets” — and custom Bertch cabinets with crown molding painted a soft sage with a matte
glaze. That smudge-proof matte finish is carried through to the kitchen’s suite of GE appliances in slate. “We chose the color scheme from what is outside our windows,” the homeowner says. The open floor plan minimizes hallways, just one of the unobtrusive design elements of building an adaptive, accessible home, says Deb Waterman, who was the project manager for Magee. till warm from the oven, a plate of freshly baked peanut butter cookies is an irresistibly delicious welcome into this newly remodeled farmhouse kitchen and addition.
It was a classic example of “old meets new” when the homeowners sought to update their four-squarestyle rural farmhouse, built in the 1900s. The homeowners bought the home in 1986. The addition provided necessary square footage, including a large bath. A wall was knocked down
between the kitchen and dining room to open the floor plan. “We planned it out carefully to make sure it was done the right way, the way it should be done to fit the house,” the homeowner says. She worked closely with her brother, Mike Flanscha, a kitchen de-

signer with Benton Design Group at Benton Building Center in Cedar Falls, to create the kitchen that best suited her needs. “I wanted the kitchen to be efficient and accessible for the way I use it, with plenty of storage and space for food preparation.” It’s a real farm kitchen, not just for looks. The owners are farmers and almost year-round, the kitchen is kept humming as she prepares meals and ferries food to workers scattered across the countryside. “If I’m not in the kitchen, I’m in the car out delivering food,” she says. Sometimes the work runs until midnight or later.”I’ll make

a big roast, a big pot of chili, something that sticks to the ribs, lots of sandwiches and once a week, we’ll do pizza.” There’s a cozy blend of Shiloh soft white cabinetry and an earthier wood finish for the sink cabinet. “I knew what every cabinet was going to hold from the beginning,” especially storage for a large collection of food storage containers. Baking is centralized into one area, and it’s all gluten-free — including those peanut butter cookies — because she suffers from celiac disease. Hanstone “Alexandria” quartz countertops with an ogee edge add character along with Mannington luxury laminate floors. The Wolf gas cooktop and Whirlpool oven and microwave combo easily manages her daily cooking needs. The owner installed the backsplash, painted the walls a buttery yellow herself and stitched the runner and curtains. “If I can do it, I’ll do it myself. I like doing projects, and this one was important to me.” Rather than an island, she opted for a table. Originally it was black, but she painted it white with pops of red on the turned legs. Other DIY touches include using pipe fittings for securing shelves and installing her less-expensive version of shiplap on bathroom walls. The vanity was built by her brotherin-law using old barn wood.

Their predictions are derived from conversations with industry experts as well as trends spotted among its 40 million monthly users. It offers a snapshot of what we might see in stores, living rooms and Instagram feeds this year. We chatted with Houzz editor and writer Mitchell Parker and asked him to dig into this year’s projections. So before you pick up that paintbrush, take a look at the colors and styles the pros say will be big in 2019. Source: The Washington Post

Dark and moody colors Although Living Coral may be Pantone’s pick for color of the year, Houzz predicts homeowners will lean toward darker and moodier colors, such as navy and forest green, in the new year. Color experts say it is a reaction to white and bright hues that dominated the design world for the past several years. Visual social networks such as Houzz and Instagram may have helped people gradually become more comfortable with the idea of experimenting with richer and darker colors. Alexandra Crafton/Houzz

Destination tubs Bubble bath fans, rejoice. As bathrooms shift from private, utilitarian spaces to open, spalike environments, homeowners are focused on the accoutrements, including free-standing tubs. According to Houzz’s 2018 Bathroom Trends Study, 80 percent of home remodelers were planning to upgrade their bathtubs. A soaking tub was the most popular option and received 69 percent of the vote (a 7 percent boost from the 2017 findings). To achieve the look, bath aficionados are “stealing space from hall and bedroom closets” to expand the size of the room, Parker says, and creating built-in nooks to keep the tub out of the footpath of the shower, sink and toilet.

Tuxedo kitchens Although white kitchens have long reigned supreme, professionals are seeing a return to black in kitchen cabinets, range hoods and island accents. The color can be edgy, chic and surprisingly practical for parents. If you’ve got a house with dogs and kids, scuff marks on white kitchen cabinets are going to be a big problem. Black paint hides a lot more. Expect to see a lot more “tuxedo” kitchens contrasting black with white walls, backsplashes and marble countertops.
Board-and-batten accents The modern farmhouse style will continue to flourish in 2019 and spread to the exterior of the home, Houzz experts say. The white siding delivers a “homey look” and can provide texture and interest to an otherwise flat facade. Corynne Pless/Houzz

ABOVE: Glass-and-steel room dividers Thanks to the popularity of open floor plans, statement-making partitions will continue to flourish in the new year. Thin metal-and-glass doors and walls offer the illusion of open space while still providing privacy, light and noise mitigation. The dividers can also be used to add visual interest and provide definition to a room, without making it feel cramped or closed off. Jours & Nuits/Houzz‌
LEFT: Wood vanities Houzz experts saw a resurgence of unpainted wooden vanities in 2018, and they predict it will only be amplified in 2019, with a turn toward reclaimed and light wood. Visible grain and knots can add texture and visual interest to a space and work well in crisp, clean white bathrooms. Kelly Scanlon Interior Design/Kathryn MacDonald Photography ‌

Free-standing dining benches Custom, built-in benching, while popular and convenient, can be expensive. Homeowners are instead opting for padded furniture benches as an affordable alternative. The multifunctional pieces are great for small breakfast nooks, providing flexible seating and in some cases hidden storage.

Kitchens that open to the outdoors Fans of entertaining and cooking may want to consider expanding their kitchen area to the outdoors. Homeowners in warmer climates are transforming patios into extra seating areas, with durable rugs, cushions and fabrics. Expect to see more kitchens completely open to decks and patios via collapsible doors and window walls in the coming year.

He is author of “The Joy and Celebration of Mole Control,’ currently in its second edition, and created a DVD, “The Mole Hunter.” His goal is to equip homeowners with knowledge and how use the right tools to win the battle, as well as determine if a lawn is being affected by moles or voles or both. The Home Show is sponsored by the Waterloo Exchange Club. Discount coupons are available at local Kwik Star stores and iowashows.com.
Four-wall accent color Forget the accent wall; 2019 is all about the accent room. Instead of a bold-colored feature wall, homeowners are opting to paint all the walls — even the trim and molding — in one room a dramatic and bold color. This trend is happening in smaller, somewhat private rooms, such as bedrooms, home offices, studies and media rooms — places where you want a comforting and relaxing vibe. Popular color choices include navy and forest green.

orget the dark days of winter. This home’s soft, nearly monochromatic color scheme is filled with light, mellow tones and pops of cheerful coral red – as youthful and fresh as the homeowners and their three pre-teen boys. It’s a comfortable family-friendly home where there are no “outof-bounds” for kids, says interior designer Rhonda Staley, IIDA. “It’s important to choose upholstery fabrics and furnishings that are not just
beautiful and well-made, but resilient and able to withstand the spills and thrills that come along with everyday life for a young family.” In the living room, warm gray walls are framed by a coffered ceiling, built-in cabinets and moldings in soft, almost creamy white.

A neutral wool-and-linen blend Fabrica rug anchors two contemporary flax-colored sofas from Lee Industries. Staley selected an apartment-sized sofa for one wall for function and space considerations. “Sometimes it’s a better choice, both visually and practicality, than a love seat. This sofa can seat two adults comfortably.” Kids can slouch on the sofas and plop their feet up on the du-
rable leather ottoman, or watch TV from the pair of sky-blue swivel club chairs, also from Lee Industries. Custom draperies in a geometric pattern filter daylight through the bay window. Casual gatherings can easily spill out of the kitchen and into an adjacent family space with a dining table, stone-stacked fireplace and conversation grouping. Charcoal gray sofas are paired

with paler gray chairs, a color scheme echoed in the wool-blend Jaunty area rug. The Restoration Hardware rustic cocktail table is impervious to wear and tear. Staley created a calm retreat in the master bedroom with pale gray walls complementing the paneled leather headboard from Century Furniture, white bed linens accented by a turquoise tailored bed skirt and the homeowners’ collection of succulent plants. A contemporary paisley fabric from Duralee for the draperies introduces additional color and pattern. The lower level is set up for entertaining with a shiny stainless-steel subway tile backsplash, granite counter tops and gray leather and fabric barstools from Alder and Tweed. Pub tables and Dovetail wood-and-metal stools and red club chairs provide plenty of seating.

hen the weather turns blustery on a late winter’s day, what could be more warming that a hearty soup and sandwich? Corey Nolta, chef at Caraway Cafe at Jorgensen Plaza, shares a few of his favorite soup recipes. Roasted vegetables and heavy cream make the Roasted Butternut
Squash Bisque taste rich and flavorful. Save time and bring home a rotisserie chicken for the Chicken Tortilla Soup, and if company’s coming, serve up your soup in individual Asiago cheese bread bowls. He’s also put a salty and (a little) sweet twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich. You’ll need some leftover pulled pork (or snag it at the grocery store!) to pull this one off.
ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH BISQUE 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon butter 1/2 onion, quartered 3/4 cup carrots, large dice 2 large butternut squashes, halved, peeled, seeded and cubed Salt and pepper, to taste 3 cups vegetable stock 1/2 cup heavy cream Sour cream, garnish
Preheat oven to 350 F. Toss olive oil, butter, onion, carrots, squash, salt and pepper in large bowl. Roast in oven until squash is tender, about 20 to 25 minutes. In small batches, puree roasted vegetables in blender. Pour into a heavy pot on the stove and stir in vegetable stock and heavy cream. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Serve with a dollop of sour cream, if desired, and a crusty French or Italian bread.
Go ahead, try a taste.
ASIAGO CHEDDAR INDIVIDUAL BREAD BOWLS 1 package active dry yeast 1 cup warm water 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 to 3 cups flour 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 cup shredded asiago cheese 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/2 the warm water. Add the sugar, salt, 2 cups flour and remaining water. Beat on medium speed, with dough hook, for 3 minutes. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky). Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes while slowly adding cheese and oregano. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Enjoy an entree and two sides of your choice, plus dessert, for $18.
5307 Caraway Lane, Cedar Falls www.Table1912.com
Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into 5 pieces; shape each into a ball. Place balls 3 inches apart on two greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. Bake at 350 F for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool. Cut a thin slice off the top of each bread. Hollow out bottom of each bread, leaving a 1/4-inch shell (discard removed bread or save for another use). Return to oven for 5 minutes to toast bread bowl before filling with hot soup. ALAN SIMMER / ON COOKING
olor me skeptical when recipes are sold based on the number of ingredients they contain. For one, fewer components does not mean “easier to make.” Chocolate chip cookies have 11 ingredients, croissants just nine; one of those takes a few minutes of mixing and baking, the other an entire day of beating butter into submission. More importantly, I often suspect the number is arbitrary. A five-ingredient frittata is fine, but would it be better with a sixth? Does the final dish suffer because of an artificial restriction? However, the rare diamond in the rough makes it worth sorting through the chaff. And this Ultimate Flourless Chocolate Cake, with only three required ingredients, shines brightly. In one of my favorite retail interactions, I once asked if the dense, fudgy cake in a display case was flourless. The response I got? “I don’t think that’s possible.” Let me assure you: It very much is, and it’s very much desirable. Flourless chocolate cake inhabits a zone between a cheesecake and a mousse, more substantial than the latter but quicker to dissolve on the tongue than the former. It’s a distillation of the pleasures of chocolate, enriched with butter and stabilized by an easy egg foam. There are two small rubs, of course.
This dessert calls for an 8-inch springform pan and a water bath. I have a variety of pans, but an 8-inch springform is not one of them. Putting a springform in a water bath also calls for heavy-duty foil, which I don’t keep on hand, and the standard 12-inch width isn’t going to cut it. (At least not if you want to keep your cake leak-free, and thus not ruined, while also getting the water high enough on the pan to make a difference.) So I turned to plans B and C: one attempt in a 9-inch springform, no water bath, and the other in an 8-inch cake pan that did get the water bath treatment. There was a clear winner between the two approaches. A water bath helps keep the pan walls cool, which prevents the edges of the cake from cooking faster than the center. The 9-inch cake developed a raised ring around the outer edge
— a telltale sign of overbaking common to cheesecakes. The proof was in the pudding, of course; the texture near the edge was relatively chalky and grainy, both problems mitigating the further inward I sampled. The 8-inch cake was uniformly creamy from edge to edge, the texture unmatched by even the very center of the 9-inch cake. (I pulled both from the oven when they reached 140 F, as instructed, so I’m guessing the extra depth of the smaller diameter keeps the dessert more moist overall.) The only disadvantage to using a cake pan over a springform is that the cake is a wee bit harder to unmold, which can result in a rattier-looking edge. Grease the dickens out of the pan walls beforehand, then be sure to run a skewer around the edges before flipping it over to let gravity do its work. If the edge is

ALAN SIMMER / ON COOKING ULTIMATE FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE Serves 12 to 16 8 large eggs, cold 1 pound bittersweet chocolate or semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped 1/2 pound unsalted butter (2 sticks),
cut into 1/2-inch chunks 1/4 cup strong coffee or liqueur (optional) confectioners’ sugar or cocoa powder for decoration
Adjust oven rack to lower middle position and heat oven to 325 F. Line bottom of 8-inch springform pan with parchment and grease pan sides. Cover pan underneath and along sides with sheet of heavyduty foil and set in large roasting pan. Bring kettle of water to boil.
BRANDON POLLOCK / Courier Staff Photographer
Beat eggs with hand-held mixer at high speed until volume doubles to approximately 1 quart, about 5 minutes. Alternately, beat in bowl of electric mixer fitted with wire whip attachment at medium speed (speed 6 on a KitchenAid) to achieve same result, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, melt chocolate and butter (adding coffee or liqueur, if using) in large heat-proof bowl set over pan of almost simmering water, until smooth and very warm (about 115 F on an instant-read thermometer), stirring once or twice. (For the microwave, melt chocolate and butter together at 50 percent power until smooth and warm, 4 to 6 minutes, stirring once or twice.) Fold one-third of egg foam into chocolate mixture using large rubber spatula until only a few streaks of egg are visible; fold in half of remaining foam, then last of remaining foam, until mixture is totally homogenous. Scrape batter into prepared springform pan and smooth surface with rubber spatula. Set roasting pan on oven rack and pour enough boiling water to come about halfway up side of springform pan. Bake until cake has risen slightly, edges are just beginning to set, a thin glazed crust (like a brownie) has formed on surface, and an instant read thermometer inserted halfway through center of cake registers 140 degrees, 22 to 25 minutes. Remove cake pan from water bath and set on wire rack; cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate overnight to mellow (can be covered and refrigerated for up to 4 days). About 30 minutes before serving, remove springform pan sides, invert cake on sheet of waxed paper, peel off parchment pan liner, and turn cake right side up on serving platter. Sieve light sprinkling of confectioners’ sugar or unsweetened cocoa powder over cake to decorate, if desired. Chef’s notes: Even though the cake may not look done, pull it from the oven when an instant-read thermometer registers 140 F. (Make sure not to let tip of thermometer hit the bottom of the pan.) It will continue to firm up as it cools. If you use a 9-inch springform pan instead of the preferred 8-inch, reduce the baking time to 18 to 20 minutes. I would recommend using an 8-inch cake pan instead, however, as the texture will suffer at the 9-inch size; be sure to grease the sides of the pan well as you cannot remove them. 54 | c v-h g.com

ALAN SIMMER / ON COOKING rough, you can use an offset spatula to somewhat smooth it back out; I suspect dipping the spatula in hot water and drying it in between strokes would help things along. There is an optional fourth ingredient, and that’s a flavoring agent of some kind. Strong coffee helps kick the chocolate flavor into overdrive without showing up as a distinct taste on its own, while raspberry liqueur brings to mind a chocolate truffle. This cake really does mellow as it sits in the fridge, and it needs a full 12 hours. Sampled after just eight, the coffee and raspberry flavors were distinct and almost sharp, while a few hours later they had receded into their complementary roles. Gussy the finished product up with powdered sugar, whipped cream, berries or what-have-you that goes with your flavor of choice. Then cut yourself a big slice of this lush, decadent dessert — you won’t want to put your fork down.

Snap! Snapdragons are one of those flowers that seem to evoke nostalgia. But there’s nothing old-fashioned or dated about this charming annual. It’s the year of the snapdragon, says the National Garden Bureau. And what’s not to love about these dragon-shaped, tubular flowers? They come in tall, medium and dwarf varieties and a range of colors, including pastels and bicolors. The only color not available is true blue. Snapdragons are fragrant — especially when mass planted and attract hummingbirds, bumble bees and other large bees. In the Midwest, plants will stop flowering under warmer summer temperatures or produce only a few flowers. Once temperatures cool off, plants start to flower again. If it gets too hot, plants may not survive. Deadheading will prolong flowering.
