Color adds energy and personality to your surroundings. As a design tool color can be used strategically to define a space, create a focal point or add character to a room. ere are some of today’s top shades, along with the ways they can be used to brighten up — or tone down — different areas of the home:
Revitalizing neutrals No longer considered a “trend,” gray has been added to the foundational neutrals in home décor. “We are definitely seeing a trend towards mineral gray as the base color of a room and away from the eggshell walls of years past,” says Suzanne Henson, vice president of merchandising and marketing for Craftmaster Furniture, another North Carolina-based upholstery producer. “With that movement comes a need to use upholstery fabrics that complement gray. So, we are using a lot of black, charcoal and white neutrals that contrast against gray. Then, we create interest by mixing together different layers of patterns and textures of fabric.” Trending shades that might not be a natural fit for an entire room – such as “millennial pink” – can be incorporated in smaller measure as an accent to gray. “Soft green and blush seem to be the next colors moving into the spectrum of upholstery fabrics,” says Henson. “Gray also works well with various shades of blue, which still seem to dominate the non-neutral colors.”

Bountiful blues Indeed, blue is a perennial favorite when it comes to American homes. From indigo and navy to more yellow-based aqua, this hue continues to delight and inspire. “Navy, powder blue and teal are especially strong right now,” says Henson. Perfect for nearly any room of the home, blue can serve as the point of inspiration or its partner. While teal and aqua work beautifully on the walls of a bedroom or powder room, they also provide a refreshing accent to a living space anchored with neutral gray. Deeper shades of navy and indigo help ground a room when paired with orange or red accents or provide stark contrast to neutrals such as white and beige.

oday’s outdoor rooms have it all – somewhere to dine, to relax and be entertained, with furnishings that function like they would for any room in the home, and with style and flair that distinctly says outof-doors,” says Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance and executive director of its outdoor division, the International Casual Furnishings Association. Dining table options in all sizes and ultracomfortable seating are topping people’s outdoor shopping lists this year (followed by lounge chairs, lighting, fire pits, umbrellas and sofas). Much like spaces indoors, outdoor rooms are leaning more toward mixing rather than matching, both in individual pieces and in groups of pieces. Manufacturers are offering pieces that incorporate several different elements such as aluminum, wicker and teak, as well as groups that pair, for example, wicker seating with iron and wood tables.

floor artistry T
he floor is often one of the strongest elements in a space. Painterly rugs with evocative strokes and striking color combinations can be the perfect foundation. Rugs help bring a room to life and, with their movement and color, accentuate the other design elements in the space. Glass and ceramic tiles are another good medium for floor art, with their smooth textures and a range of size possibilities from tiny mosaics to large slabs. “Tile is super-durable, so regardless of design, floors will look beautiful and withstand wear and tear for many years,” says Alena Capra, a designer in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “Thin tile products can be installed over existing floor tiles, making it easier than ever to give floors a stylish makeover.” Says Italian architect Paola Marella: “Technological progress has expanded the range of finishes available for ceramic tiles. For example, digital printing ... has extended the confines of images beyond the individual piece. But screen-printed and hand-printed tiles retain their appeal.” If you like the look of tile but you rent or can’t otherwise use the real deal, consider Home Smith’s Beija Flor vinyl mats. They come printed with a range of patterns like encaustic, mosaic and geometrics; it’s flooring that looks like a master craftsman or artist spent hours working on it. dirt from being tracked into your house. Our DIY project takes an generic coir rug, but you can use any kind of rug if you’re using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. You’ll also need a reusable stencil or order a custom-sized one-time use adhesive stencil from Fig & Frolic. 1. Measure the stencil and mark the middle with a marker. Apply a piece of masking tape across the top of the rug. Mark the middle of the rug on the masking tape. If using a reusable stencil, line up the center mark on the rug and the center line on the stencil and use masking tape to tape the stencil to the rug. If using a one-time use adhesive stencil, you will need to remove the backing before applying it to the rug. Applying this type of stencil to the rug is tricky as the adhesive does not want to stick to the rug. Be patient as you go. Once down, it will work like a charm. Again use masking tape to tape down the edges of the adhesive stencil. If you have letters that have center sections, remove them from the backing and place them in the correct spot. Secure them to the rug using a straight pin (through the stencil into the rug — just like you’re sticking a pin into a pin cushion).
2. Using a sponge brush or a stencil brush (we used an Annie Sloan stencil brush), apply 18 | c v-h g.com
Chalk Paint over the stencil in a straight up and down stippling stroke or motion. A circular motion while painting the stencil won’t work because the stencil won’t stay in place.
3. Let the first coat dry before applying the second coat. A third coat may be warranted. When completely dry, remove the stencils and pins, if applicable. 4. No need to seal. Place indoors or outdoors. Want to make one at Fig & Frolic where we provide all the supplies? IMPERFECT DECOR “Perfect imperfection” is a trend in furnishings and decor. “It’s a return to the artisanal and the crafted, with narrative and meaning to objects,” says Caroline Till, co-founder of the London design studio FranklinTill. “Fingerprints of process and technique are part of the aesthetic appeal of the finished item.” Perfectly imperfect also reflects a 15th century Japanese aesthetic: wabi sabi. Loosely translated, it refers to an appreciation of the effects of Refin’s Voyager ceramic tile collection was inspired by the aged time, and the humble beauty and rusted metal bridges of Genoa, found in things that are and the architectural elements of impermanent, old, worn or Victorian buildings. incomplete. REFLIN via AP We see it in the charm of rustic recycled wood, wrinkly linens and vintage pieces with patina. It’s also evident in unpredictable and unique finishes, like reactive or drip glazes, color-washed walls, antiqued pieces, distressed rugs and ceramic tiles, as shown here. key is that it adds architectural interest to a room where there isn’t any. Edge simple curtains with a Greek key trim, and it’s as though you’ve magically added architectural moldings to your windows. Put down a large-scale Greek key rug, and you instantly have a strong, geometric shape that anchors the room and optically makes it look bigger. You can find items with just about any scale of Greek key. The key can be blown up to a single large bracket so that the design takes on a super graphic quality, or the motif can be miniaturized and densely repeated so that the keys are less noticeable. When it comes to color, there are no rules. You can find Greek key items from

any patterns and designs we use today are actually as old as time. Perhaps there is no motif this is truer of than the Greek key, which is even older than its name suggests. Variations of the design are found on Egyptian tombs, ancient Chinese buildings and sculptures, and Mayan carvings. Still, we most closely associate the linear geometric pattern with the Greeks and their mosaic floors, red and black pots, and masterfully carved marble friezes. Greek key, also referred to as meander, is in its most basic form a linear pattern. The design is made up of a long, continuous line that repeatedly folds back on itself, mimicking the ancient Maeander River of Asia Minor with its many twists and turns. What is most astonishing about the meander motif is that it is found in the architecture, sculpture and decorative arts of many early civilizations — civilizations that could not possibly have known or seen one another’s artifacts. It’s the Greeks who used the motif with abandon, hence the reason we most commonly refer to it as the Greek key. The Romans then copied it, and by the 18th century, all of Europe had adapted it into their design vocabulary. For our own history, the motif has been celebrated in many design periods, including Empire and Hollywood Regency. Greek key strikes the right balance of decorative and simple, ancient and modern, masculine and feminine — all at the same time. It works particularly well when juxtaposed with more organic or flowery design. One of the greatest benefits of Greek

cool blue and white color palette brings a fresh perspective to this Mississippi River retreat. Most of the heavy lifting – the top to bottom renovation of the 118-year-old cottage just yards away from the river – had already been done by previous owners. It was left to the new owners and interior designer Emily Hughes, IIDA, with The Mansion in Iowa City, to imbue each room with charm. Naturally, playing up the scenery topped the to-do list. “The house has been modernized, although some details are original to the cottage or very old, including some 1930s light fixtures. I felt it had a nice charm and flow. It’s very calming and relaxing, and I can look out the windows and see the river. It’s almost like being on the water,” says the homeowner. But what she didn’t want was a nautical theme. “We wanted something more sophisticated, still casual and in keeping with the cottage, but not that kind of theme. We wanted to come in the summer as a retreat, walk the dogs, relax, go boating and use it as a guest house for family and friends.” She worked with Hughes to create an authentic river cottage look, rather than a coastal or oceanside theme. Hughes describes the project as collaborative, and is thrilled with the finished design because it fits the homeowners “sunny personality. It has a lot of character,” Hughes says. White paint is the unifying factor throughout the cottage. It provides continuity and creates an open and airy feeling in the rooms, and Hughes was careful to keep spaces from looking too matchy-matchy while carrying out the blue-and-white theme.

“I chose driftwood and weathered finishes for the transitional pieces to lend a more casual feel and tried to weave some subtle natural textures throughout the interiors, such as the chunky jute and sisal rugs,” Hughes explains. She also incorporated a combination of weathered zinc, silver and gold metal finishes that compliment colors and fixtures in each room. In the living room blue linen blend fabrics dresses skirted sofas from Lee Industries, punctuated by a collection of print and fringed pillows. Modern FARMHOUSE
“M
odern farmhouse” is part of today’s design lexicon. Designers and builders describe the concept as being as much a feeling as a style. Built by Kugler Construction, this modern Iowa farmhouse respects its history and interprets the style with fresh, familyfriendly appeal — and a hint of urban sophistication. The four-bedroom home has 2,085 square feet on the main level and 1,500 square feet on the lower level. Throughout much of the main level, luxury vinyl floors have the look and texture of hardwood. The neutral color scheme — primarily white and shades of gray — easily takes on a wide range of accent colors. Galvanized metal railings provide a barrier between the living room and stairs going down to the lower level. The living room fireplace is inviting and brings a pleasing symmetry to the cozy, comfortably furnished space. “The homeowners asked us to incorporate wood from an uncle’s old barn that was taken down in a tornado. It was interesting to figure out how to use it in the house,” says Bill Kugler Jr.

Ultimately the heritage wood was repurposed for cross hatching on the kitchen island, great room fireplace wall and for a barn door in the lower level. The farmhouse vernacular is most evident in the casually elegant and comfortable kitchen. What is particularly striking is the rustic touch of distressed butcher block as island countertop, a contrast to the contemporary-style,

ometimes it’s a bit touchy for an interior designer to mix family and design, especially if the client is your mom. Even when you’re a seasoned professional, arguing with your mom over paint colors, light fixtures and upholstery patterns can be intimidating. Mom is always right, right? But Alex Von Ahsen has been here before. Phelans’ senior designer has guided his mom, Karen, through several remodeling and redecorating projects in his career. So when Karen decided her home of 18 years needed another “freshening up,” who else would she turn to? “I was gearing up for retirement. I was preparing for a new chapter in my life and wanted my home to reflect that, and Alex knew that. I knew he would do a wonderful job,” says Karen. Alex smiles. “She made it easy for me. She trusts me to do what is right for her, what fits her lifestyle and her personality. Mostly these were updates – a more neutral color palette, a little more drama, new fabrics and artwork. Every project doesn’t have to be a complete tearing down and starting over for rooms to be transformed,” he explains. An open-concept floor plan puts the living and dining room on full display, while the kitchen is open to the dining room. Originally the kitchen felt small and dark. New skylights visually opened up the space, shedding light on quartz countertops and stone-and-glass backsplash that was runs vertically to heighten the illusion. from Revelation adds drama to the dining room. Although the space is compact, there’s plenty of space for a Cynthia Rowleydesigned credenza in deep, rich teal for Hooker Furniture. A pair of buffet lamps and stylish mirror are finishing touches. “I wasn’t sure about the color for the buffet — a big step for me, and I’m surprised how much I love it. The color is so unexpected,” Karen says. Sherwin Williams’ “Agreeable Gray” creates the perfect backdrop for pops of color in the living room. The Norwalk sofa, slipper chairs and pouf ottoman have been reupholstered in elegant, subtly textured gray fabrics. “When your palette is this neutral, fabrics and textures become

important choices. Art needs to be a focal point,” Alex explains. A large canvas titled “Deep Ocean Blue” provides that focus, hanging above the sofa. Custom draperies in pewter from Carole Fabrics complete the room. The master bedroom is relatively small, with just enough space for the tall, arched and tufted headboard from Thomasville. Soft, slate blue walls are complemented by dark paisley custom draperies. “It’s interesting how quickly you forget what the house looked like when it was all dark colors and heavy fabrics. Now the colors unify all the spaces, it feels more open, and I love it. Alex says it’s ‘fresh,’ and he’s right,” Karen adds. H&G

ray is no longer considered a “trendy” color choice. It’s a versatile, tried-and-true neutral with more hues, tones and shades — some dramatic, some subtle — than you can shake a paint stick at. Choosing the right grays for this newly built, contemporary home with five-bedrooms and 3 ½ baths was a thoughtful process. They settled on “Dorian Gray,” a Sherwin Williams mid-tone gray, for the house’s most public space, the great room. “They wanted a gray that was classic and muted, but not too dark and not toward the brown side of gray,” says interior designer Katie Bell of Bell Tile & Design in Jesup. “It’s a timeless color that can be manipulated by bringing in pops of color.” The home is approachable and family-friendly for the owners’ three young children, but still has “that wow! factor when I walk in the door,” says the homeowner. Hardwood maple Belluno floors stained in a rich, deep gray add character and set the tone throughout the main living space with its comfortable conversation seating and modern, linear fireplace. Dark cabinetry, the large-format 12-by-12 subway tile backsplash and “Bianco Antico” Iran granite countertops continue the drama in the kitchen. Cherry cabinetry with its Shaker-style flat-panel doors is stained sable and the island is painted

“Gauntlet Gray” for contrast. Both colors work nicely with the tone-on-tone quality and subtle movement in the granite. “The granite is a modern look, but the color gives it a warm feeling. It all flows together,” Bell says. “This is where we gather, where we spend time together as a family,” the homeowner says. “I like having the kitchen open to what’s going on and it’s more accommodating for entertaining.” High on the list in the new home was having a great laundry room, and this one features 8- by 36-inch large format wood tile and a laminate Wilsonart countertop called “Night Passage.” In the hall bath, the 12- by 24-inch tile makes a good marriage with the “Bianco Antico” Iran granite countertop and the Brio linear glass and stone backsplash. The sleek master bath carries through the gray color

scheme with “Dovetail” paint on the walls and granite countertop. But it the real statement-maker is the large, multiplehead shower with a stunning accent tile called “Waterfall.” “I went back and forth about what to choose for tile, but I had my eye on that one. I kept coming back to it. It’s just so unique,” the homeowner says. She enjoyed working with Bell throughout the project. “I had a lot of trust in Katie. I’m a very visual person, and Katie would show me options and choices. It’s amazing how much stress she took out of the whole project. Working with Kate made the process easier and more fun.” Bell adds, “It’s collaboration with my clients. I sit down with them and ask a lot of questions to get to know them and what they like and don’t like. I don’t want them to have any regrets.” H&G

Stocking up on rosés for summer? Start here. TEXT BY DAVE MCINTYRE

THE WASHINGTON POST
Here are five to get you in the right frame of mind in case hot weather actually does come to stay awhile. And don’t be put off by unusual packaging, such as cans or fliptop stoppers: The wine may still be delicious. For wine lovers with a bit of a sweet tooth or those who just love ruby reds, I’m including a grapefruitinfused rosé that is surprisingly good.
Cavalchina Bardolino Chiaretto 2016 Veneto, Italy
The grapes that typically go into Valpolicella (corvina, rondinella and molinara) are also in this zesty, juicy rosé, which is super year after year. It’s great by itself, but excels with salty or garlicky foods such as olives or hummus. Alcohol by volume: 12.5 percent.
Hugl Weine Zweigelt Rosé 2016 Austria
Zweigelt is Austria’s main red grape and gives this rosé its vibrant and peppery profile with loads of cherry and raspberry flavors. ABV: 12 percent.
Alexander Valley Vineyards Dry Rosé of Sangiovese 2016 Sonoma County, Calif.
A perennial favorite of mine, this delicious rosé offers watermelon and strawberry flavors, with a whiff of wild herbs carried on a sea breeze. ABV: 13.2 percent.
Listel Grain de Gris 2016 Sable de Camargue, France
Listel is a popular rosé in France, and it’s easy to see why: It’s cheap and delicious. It goes down easy, so have another bottle on hand. ABV: 13 percent.
Listel Cuvée Pink Grapefruit Rosé France,
My inner wine purist screams “No!” at the thought of adulterating a nice rosé with fruit juice. Aren’t wine coolers a thing of the past? But this is delicious and refreshing, with a strong finish of ruby red grapefruit and just enough sweetness without being cloying. Chill it really cold and maybe even add a bit of sparkling water to give it an extra edge. ABV: 9 percent.
Amble + Chase Rosé 1017 Provence, France
Sure, this wine seems slick to be packaged in cans, but it is quite good — in fact, it’s one of the best rosés I’ve tasted from the 2017
vintage. The price is equivalent to $15 for a standard bottle, so it isn’t really cheap, but the cans offer convenience for picnics or even a restaurant by-the-glass program. ABV: 13.2 percent.
Vinas Viejas de Paniza Garnacha 2012 Spain
This is textbook garnacha (the Spanish name for Grenache, familiar to fans of southern Rhone wines from France). It offers spicy flavors of cranberry and raspberry, and enough heft to pair with meats or fish from the grill. ABV: 14 percent.
Beau de France Rosé 2017 Pays d’Oc, France
Unconventional packaging again, with the swing-cap stopper more familiar on beer bottles. Thing is, this rosé is so delicious that you won’t want to re-close the bottle — unless of course you reuse it for salad dressing or something else. ABV: 13 percent. Scoring: Three stars exceptional, two stars excellent, one star very good.

ack in the heyday of “Martha Stewart Living,” the domestic diva’s syndicated hourly show, I heard about a survey that revealed viewers felt more stressed watching her than they did the evening news. I understood this logic as a child; as an adult, I feel it viscerally. And that’s why I share horror stories along with successes, both to commiserate and to educate. Though it’s kind of cliche, mistakes are only bad when you refuse to learn from them. That brings us to the recipe at hand: Pink Lemonade Ice Cream Cake. It’s a light yet creamy dessert that’s perfect for summer, and it only has five ingredients. What could go wrong? The original crust calls for 32 vanilla wafers. After a quick blitz in the food processor, I added the melted fat, pulsed a few more times and poured the mixture into the bottom of one of my springform pans. Did you know that all brands of wafers aren’t the same size? That or they’ve been downsized over the years; I haven’t yet purchased a second box to figure it out. This is why I appreciate weight or volume as a check when calling for perpiece ingredients. At least the alarm bells in my head went off: the crust barely looked like it would cover and was far too soggy. I put the mixture back in the food processor, tossed in another handful of cookies, and got it to a much better place. Quick: How many cups are there in a standard tub of Cool Whip? And if you’re substituting real cream, how much does a half-pint whip up to? I didn’t know the answers off the top of my head, but I sure do now. Turns out there’s just over three cups in an eight-ounce container of

Pink-lemonade ice cream cake is light, creamy & delicious
ALAN SIMMER / ON COOKING whipped topping, while cream doubles in volume when beaten, from one cup to two. I suppose Murphy’s Law dictated the outcome: I underestimated the first and overestimated the second. I was staring into a bowl that had only two-thirds of the billowy clouds I needed. Now I could feel panic creeping in. I needed to run back to the store, but the last thing I wanted was a puddle of softening ice cream leaking all over my fridge. I decided to make the first cake, then put everything on ice until I got back. Airy ingredients like beaten egg whites get folded in to preserve all the air you’ve just painstakingly whipped into them. That’s what adds lift and volume; stirring or whisking would collapse those air pockets back down, and whatever you’re making will end up flatter and denser than expected. Often the rest of the batter is very thick, so this is hard to do, and even folding will eventually take its toll on the delicate structure. This is why most recipes call for a third of the whipped portion to be mixed in directly to lighten the batter, making the folding task that much easier. You essentially sacrifice the air in a smaller portion to preserve it in the rest. This recipe made no mention of that, and as I drew the spatula through what looked like streaky Pepto-Bismol for the hundrenth time, I realized exactly why I was struggling. My cranky mood ratcheted up another notch as I finished mixing and poured the pink soup into a prepared pan. The suggested presentation for the cake is to line a ring of overlapping vanilla wafers around the outside of the springform as a decorative border. This works well when your wafers are the unlisted yet expected size; mine, as we have established, were not. The filling crested the ring, running over the top and then down between the wafers and the pan. I could do little but pout as I slid it into the freezer and then dashed to the grocery. (When unmolded the next day, the effect was far more
comical than elegant, but hey: at least I had the foresight to make two!) I’d done the first cake with a whisk and then a hand mixer, each of which had their pitfalls, so for cake two I went to the stand mixer, tossing in the ice cream and lemonade. The ice cream didn’t want to play nice, and a big hunk was getting pushed around the bowl, splattering pink liquid out. I switched it off and removed the beater, using it break up the ice cream a bit, then turned the mixer back on. As the whisk attachment swirled around the bowl, it gathered the ice cream up in front of it, in spite of my efforts. And since I had forgotten to lock the head of the mixer down this time, it reared up as the beater reached the front of the bowl. The ice cream acted like a spatula, throwing a tidal wave of pink out of the bowl — onto the counter, onto the floor, and all down my front. I was furious, mostly at myself, but I

couldn’t even stop to clean up lest my ingredients melt. I struggled through the rest of the process (Did I remember to lighten this batter? I think we all know I did not.) as I navigated around the sticky mess in the middle of my kitchen. And yet. The end result? Not so bad. Sometimes everything goes wrong and the result is still fine; sometimes you can do everything right and the souffle still falls. When I can bear to make this again, I’d like to put it in a round bowl lined with plastic wrap, kind of like an upside-down cake. Though I like baking the crust to deepen the flavor, it would adhere to the ice cream and hold together that way when pressed on at the end. The recipe here is informed by this
tale of catastrophe, and I encourage you to view it as a blank canvas. Mix and match your crust, ice cream and flavoring agent to suit your tastes. I can see a graham-cracker-vanilla-limeade combo working well, or perhaps an Oreo crust with chocolate ice cream and some creme de menthe. But whatever you do, lock the mixer head.

Pour into crust and freeze until firm, at least 3 hours. (If you plan to garnish the top, let the cake freeze for 10 minutes or so to ensure your decorations don’t sink into the muck.) When ready to serve, place cake in refrigerator for 15 minutes to soften slightly. Remove springform collar and slice, running knife under hot water in between cuts.

Using hand or stand mixer, beat ice cream until chunks are broken up and it seems like it will play nice; add thawed lemonade and mix until blended. Add one-third (1 cup) of whipped cream and mix until incorporated to lighten. Gently fold in rest of cream with spatula until just homogenous.
Chef’s notes: Let the ice cream soften in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or so before mixing it. I used Martha Stewart’s recipe for candied lemons for the garnish; you’ll need two or three lemons’ worth if you’d like to cover the whole cake. As soon as I poured the steeping liquid down the drain I realized I’d just wasted a batch of lemon simple syrup, which you can save and use in drinks and other applications.

Lilac. New lilac varieties incorporate the best traits — fragrance, hardiness and longevity — and have fewer of the worst ones, like suckering. In 2019, in Proven Winners will introduce two new dwarf “Bloomerang” reblooming lilacs in pink and purple, as well as “Double Blue” in the “Scentara” series, a lilac that promises to “knock your socks off” with fragrance.

• Thrillers bring drama to a container. Height, unusual shapes, colors, flowers and foliage can add vertical interest and flair. Center the thriller in the pot if seen from all sides, or the back if seen from only a few angles.
• Fillers add lushness to your composition. If the thriller is centered, divide the pot into quarters or thirds to fill in around it. • Spillers are trailing plants that spill over pot edges and fill the gap between fillers. These are the finishing touch. • You can leave room for plants to grow and fill in, figuring three or four plants in 10-12-inch pots, five to eight in 16-20 inch pots, depending on plant size. Or stuff them like an enchilada, poking in as many plants as the pot will hold. These dense mini gardens will need more frequent watering and judicious trimming for elbow room. • Use good potting soil, filling containers to a few inches of the top. Layer in plants, filling in with soil as you go. Shake to settle; don’t hard-pack the soil. Leave head room for watering without washing away soil. • Water deeply after planting, then water and fertilize as needed.

Top: Ivy geranium, petunias, black sweet potato vine and alternanthera make a dramatic window box. Bottom: Dress up an old bird bath with a basket brimming with “Cascade Pink” double petunia and Superbena “Violet Ice” verbena, a trailing verbena in vibrant purple with white eye.

WAYS TO SQUEEZE THE MOST FROM SPACE
ven a small patio, deck or balcony can be made useful and plant-friendly. Here how:
1.
Assess your space realistically, and then seek inspiration at a home and garden store or on Pinterest. Decide what your goals are. Do you want to fill the space with beautiful blooms, cutting some for indoor flower arrangements throughout the summer? Or would you love to grow an ample crop of herbs for cooking or become a composter? Once you choose, get creative. A vertical garden can maximize wall space, for example. As you plan, consider which tools or equipment you’ll need for gardening or other outdoor work. One spacesaving solution: For seating, choose closed benches with storage space inside.
2.
Choose plants strategically. Start with hardy plants, maybe ornamental herbs like rosemary or lavender. Another good option is buying pre-made container gardens with plants and flowers that work together and have similar needs for light and water. For vivid color without too much effort, consider a pre-planted

Embrace color and drama. In a small space, don’t be afraid to go big. For example, instead of planting herbs or flowers in small planters, choose one large and dramatic planter as a design statement. Chose from many beautiful, lightweight planters available made with a mix of fiberglass and zinc or bronze, so you can create a dramatic look that’s safe to use where weight is an issue and make them easier to move. containers for interest.
4.
Make other details count. Think of your small patio, deck or balcony as an outdoor room. Choose a beautiful table as a focal point, even if it’s small and will have plants on it. Also consider lighting, and how the space will look and feel at night, as well as during the day. If the outdoor space doesn’t have electricity, no problem. Use LED candles or battery-powered lights clustered around the space. As a finishing touch, add a sculpture or other item — like a decorative birdcage painted a bright color — amid your plants.

Decide what size fan you need. Fan blades generally range from 29 to 54 inches, with most measuring 52 inches. If the room’s longest wall is less than 12 feet, the fan shouldn’t be more than 36 inches wide — but if you are unsure, check the retailer’s website for sizing recommendations. Most ceiling fans have between three and five blades.

Don’t want to invest in a new fan? Try making smaller cosmetic upgrades to their existing fan, such as switching out heavy, dark blades with white ones that blend into the ceiling or removing the light kit as a temporary fix.
4.
Picking the right style of ceiling fan can be tough, but brands and retailers have made it easy to shop based on your taste and space.

elect from a growing variety of accent pieces that will make your outdoor rooms just as beautiful as any indoor space. “There’s really no limit to accent items available for outdoors now,” said Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance and executive director of its outdoor division, the International Casual Furnishings Association. “We have lamps, pillows, decorative tables, rugs, candleholders and pretty much anything that would go in an indoor setting. Consumers can personalize their outdoor settings just as they would indoors.” Hirschhaut added that many of today’s outdoor items are so beautiful and durable that some consumers are selecting them for indoor use, especially pillows and rugs, because of how well they hold up to everyday use.
Outdoor settings displaying Zuo Modern’s colorful vases, tables and accessories will be just as welldecorated as any indoor space. The table, box and candle holder should be used in covered outdoor spaces, but the vases are fine in the open air.
