Mellow or bold, let it lift the mood in your home décor as a paint color, and in upholstery fabrics, rugs, Behr’s window coverings and ac‘Spirited Yellow’ cessories. BEHR PHOTO Where to use it?  All the places in your home where you greet, eat and gather with family and friends.  Use it on the front door for instant verve and welcome.  Bright, cheerful and fun yellows are great for kids’ spaces, as well as brightening dark hallways.  Exterior — traditionally, yellow adds great curb appeal A note of caution: Finding the “just right” shade of yellow can be notoriously difficult because it reflects light. Chose the best yellow by knowing the size of the room or space you plan to paint, and the amount of light it gets — natural, as well as from lamps and overhead lighting.

BIG, BOLD WALLS More is definitely more with the maximalist movement, especially on walls. No more fussy, chintzy wallcoverings. Today’s patterns are big, bold and edgy. Oversized tropical leaves, floral prints in a neon palette, geometric shapes, world maps. Bold walls make a huge impact and

should be the starting point for a room design. One or two statement walls is enough. Think about using these big patterns on screens or room dividers, on door panels and in other unexpected ways. They’re meant to be striking, unexpected and fun!

clectic, collected spaces are in fashion for outdoor spaces and adding furnishings that create a curated look is easier than ever. These are trends to watch — and incorporate — into your outdoor lifestyle from the International Casual Furnishings Association.

RETRO Designers are finding inspiration in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, with mid-century modern style especially popular. Classic lines and design elements such as hairpin legs are showing up on outdoor pieces for a fresh, yet timeless look.

ELEMENTS TEXTURED FABRICS It’s amazing what manufacturers are doing with outdoor fabrics today, including knitted acrylics that create blanket and sweater looks, or the illusion of texture. Outdoor fabrics have come so far that many consumers are opting to use outdoor pieces indoors because of their beauty and durability.

The hairpin leg, a midcentury modern classic design element, distinguishes the HIP Collection at Seaside Casual. ‌Creating a sensational boho tablescape for the head table at a wedding with ease, low stress and low cost.

STEP 1: DON’T FUSS. Just go with the flow. Don’t worry about things being centered or even, just go with it.

BRANDON POLLOCK PHOTOS / Courier Staff Photographer‌

STEP 2: TABLE COVERING Layer, layer, layer — you can’t have too many layers. Search garage sales, thrift stores and fabric store clearance racks for white or off-white material — lace, gauzy fab fabric, tulle, textured fabrics. Don’t worry about size. It doesn’t matter if each layer completely covers the table, as long as all the layers together give you the look you’re after. This tablescape has layers of colors and textures.

STEP 3: TABLEWARE Mix and match, but stick with whites, off-white, and/or clear chargers and plates. Each setting doesn’t need to be the same. Make the bride and groom setting a bit more special with fancier plates.

STEP 4: NAPKINS No need for high dollar, fancy linens. We used utility shop towels, pristinely pressed to make them appear more formal. Another shade of white or off-white will do.

STEP 5: GLASSWARE Whatever style of clear glassware you have will work fine. Mix it up.

STEP 6: SILVERWARE We used my great-grandmother’s ornate silverware. Ask someone in your family or a dear friend if they have any special cut-

22 | c v-h g.com

lery you can borrow.

STEP 7: FLORALS Nature puts all colors together, so don’t be afraid to try different colors. Yes, live flowers are the rage, and we agree. But faux flowers look so real and are easy to work with, plus they won’t wilt. Use a large variety of florals. Our tablescape uses 10 or more different florals and greenery, including trailers. Layer by starting with the most abundant flowers you have, then sort your bounty by color and arrange across the table length each color at a time, pushing them in to anchor in the bottom layer. Saving trailing

plants (and succulents) to arrange on top. You can add the bride’s bouquet to the center of the tablescape.

STEP 8: BRASS CANDLESTICKS AND TAPERS The more the better. Check thrift stores — but if you see them, buy them. Brass candlesticks are hot and likely won’t be there if you wait. Tapers should be white or offwhite. Remember you get what you pay for with tapers, so splurge for ones that don’t burn through too quickly or melt wax all over everything.

STEP 9: ENJOY! TAKE IT ALL IN.

What’s hot

NOW

‌If home is where the heart is, shouldn’t your home be a reflection of who you are, your own personal style and decor that fits your

lifestyle? Today’s home decor is all about surrounding yourself with things that make you happy. Take your cues from what’s hot now.

Inspired by folk art and magical tales, these recycled cotton blankets from The Shop Floor Project are full of whimsical landscapes and childlike creatures. Textiles should have an air of authenticity, such as being hand-crafted or made from recycled materials. They can be functional for everyday use or displayed like artwork.

As cool as its name, the Sinatra suspension lamp by Delightfull is a sculptural design handmade in brass. The lamp shades are aluminum. Statement-making lighting is the latest trend, a move away from the Edisonstyle exposed bulb. From Covet House.

26 | c v-h g.com

Maximalism is the opposite of minimalism. After seasons of restraint, designers are going wild with voluptuous patterns like the garden-themed wallpaper, abstract animal print and hand-tufed “Mursi” rug, sophisticated “Iraya” curved headboard and the blush pink Naj bench. all from BarBrabbu Design Forces.

ELEMENTS

Minimalism is out; organization is in. Jettison what you don’t like, don’t use or no longer need. That doesn’t mean paring your belongings down to bare bones. Give your organization some flair with a great storage system that is both practical and attractive. The soft sage green color is perfectly in step with 2019 colors. The Stanley floor light with three arms is a style icon from the ‘50s and ‘60s. The nickel-plated lamp has glossy black and matte white lamp shades. From Delightfull.

x x x x x 201 7 | 27

ELEMENTS

Designers are still embracing the bold, graphic look of Moroccan design in rugs, textiles, tiles, furnishings and accessories. The “Medina” rug from Rug Society will add a little spice to your decor and anchor any room setting. The rug has an heirloom quality with the appearance of being well-worn in places. The mix of subtle and bright colors, including pink, is striking when detailed in a stark black and white border. The trick to mastering Moroccan style is to layer on varieties of patterns, colors and textures for a curated or accumulated look. Choose furnishings with intricate details and accent Moroccan-influenced motifs for pillows, mirrors, lamps and wall art.

3-D illusions are increasingly popular, part of a revival of Brutalism, an architectural style popular in the mid-20th century. Arthouse’s “Glitterati” chevron black and gold wallcovering is bold but contemporary with shimmer and glitter. The non-woven wallpaper is easy to install and remove.

28 | c v-h g.com

ELEMENTS Designers continue to mine the past for looks to revive. The latest is Memphis style, which originated in Milan, Italy, not Tennessee, and named for the Bob Dylan song, “Stuck Inside Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.” Geometric designs, funky and unusual uses for materials like tile and color are among its characteristics. Here, Lithos Design “Piano” inlaid design tiles are used on the floor and carried up onto the wall in linear, geometic shapes. The tiles are available in 16 color palettes.

Forget art above your bed —make your bed the art! Lean back against a cushy upholstered headboard that rises dramatically from floor to ceiling, dressed in tufted and plush charcoal gray velvet. Velvet is luxurious and warm, a fabric that adds instant sophistication. Both headboards and velvet are regaining popularity with designers for their timeless appeal.

Biophilia — bio- meaning life,’ and -philia— ‘friendly feeling toward’ — is a word you’ll be seeing more frequently. How it translates into home decor is the connection between humans and nature. It’s about creating surroundings that bring us into nature —gardens, trees, living walls, all kinds of greenery, the sound and sight of water, organic materials such as stone and wood. Transform your backyard or deck into a shady oasis with comfortable furnishings and accents that promote relaxation and calm.

Black and white is always a sophisticated look, but it can be a bit too stark and sometimes (gasp!) boring. Designers are revving up the classic combo with pops of great color like teal, sapphire blue, lime green or bright pink. Color breathes new life into these rooms through upholstered pieces and on the wall.

Cabinetry The retro look takes on a bit more polish. The Hudson Armchair from Covet House has a striking combination of materials that turn it into a modern version of the ‘60s equivalent. The retro-styled chair is upholstered in beige leather with polished brass details at the end of its legs and a smooth solid walnut body. The delicate, crystal-clear clarity of a teardrop is revamped by KOKET in the ‘Tears’ cocktail table, a striking combination of shaped glass and meta. The tear-shaped top swivels out to become a cocktail table. The Sinatra standing lamp is designed by Delightfull.

Fixtures, furnishings and fabrics are a few of the design choices that must be made on any home remodeling project. Among the most important decisions is choosing the person who is going to guide the plan through to its finish. The homeowners here worked with several interior designers before finding their ideal collaboration with Rhonda Staley Design LLC. Staley, IIDA, has worked with the young family over several years through several remodeling phases. Now the home has

an inviting and family-friendly contemporary vibe that the homeowners love. “I don’t like clutter, and my husband loves his knick-knacks and being surrounded by things. Rhonda was able to find a balance for us so we can both be happy,” the homeowner says. She was initially reluctant to settle on a neutral color palette. “Rhonda showed me neutrals, browns and taupes, and she talked me into it. I’m so glad she did because we just love it.” “Their home is filled with a lot of artifacts and memorabilia, but it’s organized and displayed in such a way that it doesn’t look busy or cluttered. It was important that they both felt comfortable,” Staley says. In the open and welcoming living room, the fireplace is the focal point with its warm, honey-gold maple rising to the ceiling. Another wood panel conceals the television, creating a cohesive, asymmetrical effect. Furnishings are upholstered in sturdy fabrics that easily hold up to the daily activities of an expanding, busy family. Sofa, chairs and broad leather ottoman with a walnut base are from Century Furniture, while the bentwood rocking chair is an antique. The alder sofa table is from Lorts and lamps are by Robert Abbey. Redesigning and remodeling the kitchen was by far the most extensive project, Staley says. “It was a dark kitchen with a small island that had room for only two barstools. It wasn’t very functional for today’s lifestyle, so I changed the configuration and rearranged the appliances. I wanted the space to reflect the light.” Cabinet Studio build the custom cabinetry finished in a soft cream. The Thermador appliance suite is concealed behind matching doors. One cabinet hides the microwave and coffee bar. Counters are topped in “Colonial Beige” granite from India with white, beige and gray tones, and the is-

land was treated to a waterfall edge as a contemporary touch. The backsplash is limestone mosaic, and floors are light oak. A Hammerton custom light fixture hangs above the dining table. In the main-level billiard room, a large new window was installed to bring in more natural light. The limestone and maple fireplace surround marries this wing of the house with the living area. A grouping of leather sofa and chairs offers a comfortable place to hang out, while a collection of guitars hangs on the wall as artwork. A bathroom on the main level features Pratt & Lambert grasscloth wallpaper on upper walls and below, custom-colored, hand-glazed tiles are topped with thick bull-nosed trim. The walnut-stained cabinet is topped with Uba Tuba granite. On the lower level, Staley also redesigned the main bathroom in floor-toceiling Caribbean blue mosaic tile. At the owners’ behest, the blue matches the carpeting in the audio room. A floating vanity, wall-mounted toilet and walk-in shower are modern elements.

omfort. Every homeowner wants it, but everyone has a different idea of what exactly comfort looks — and feels — like. For this couple, comfort is defined in modern terms — clean, streamlined, sophisticated, not quite minimalist, but close. “It feels like home,” says the owner, praising the expertise of Kugler Construction in listening to their wants and needs and bringing their vision to life. The open layout makes the adaptive home as accessible as possible for the owners. Throughout the home, the color scheme is primarily white and gray shades with touches of black for emphasis. Tall windows topped by transoms fill the rooms with sunlight. Gray-toned engineered hardwood Provenza floors run throughout the main level. In the living room, the white coffered ceiling with wood inlays is an attention-getter, but it doesn’t upstage the fireplace. With its subtle shiplap wall and long gray cabinets and shelving on either side, it’s a natural focal point. A soft gray upholstered sectional and a pair of armchairs hug the space, perfect for conversations or TV-watching. Hanstone “Tranquility” quartz tops the 10-foot-long island in the kitchen. Glossy white bevel-edged subway tiles create a

seamless line with the white custom cabinetry by Becker Cabinetry. An apron front sink is sleek stainless steel. A scene-stealing pendant light fixture with glass and metal details hangs above the elongated walnut dining room table with its monolithic legs and espresso finish. The master bathroom is streamlined but well-appointed. Underfoot, porcelain tiles laid in a herringbone pattern add visual impact to the rectangular tub, walk-in shower and chrome fixtures.

ummer has its traditions here in the Midwest: Camping out under a starry sky, the aroma of smoke in the air that tells you neighbors are grilling out tonight — time to wangle an invitation by dropping by with a fresh-from-the-oven blueberry pie? — and kids chase lightning bugs through the yard as night falls. Saturday mornings include a visit to the nearest farmers’ market for fresh basil, corn, squash and tomatoes. As a sweltering afternoon cools down, family and friends gather on the deck to sip long, cold glasses of lemonade and dine in the glow of the firepit. Pitcher-perfect

summer It’s no surprise that sangria is a popular hot-weather beverage. What’s more refreshing in summer than fruit and fresh flavors served chilled? And it’s perfect for entertaining, too. Remember, the longer the sangria sits, the fuller the flavor. So make it the night before and refrigerate. When you’re ready to serve, float some fresh fruit slices in the beverage, and if desired, add some club soda for a little fizz just before serving.

GREEN APPLE SANGRIA 2 green apples (such as Granny Smith), cored, cut into 3/4” pieces Zest of 1 orange, removed in long strips with a vegetable peeler 3/4 cup fresh orange juice 2 cinnamon sticks 3/4 cup brandy 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 1/3 cup sugar 1/4 cup Cointreau or other orange liqueur 1 750-milliliter bottle Spanish red wine 1 cup (about) club soda Orange slices Stir apples, orange zest and juice, cinnamon, brandy, lemon juice, sugar, and Cointreau in a large pitcher to combine. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour. DO AHEAD: Sangria base can be made 1 day ahead. Cover; chill. Add wine to sangria base and stir to combine. Pour sangria over ice, top off with club soda, and garnish with orange slices.

ENTERTAINMENT GRILLED STONE FRUIT SANGRIA‌ Vegetable oil (for grill) 2 peaches, halved, pitted 2 plums, halved, pitted 1 nectarine, halved, pitted 12 cherries, 6 halved, pitted, 6 left whole

For serving: 1 (750ml) bottle red wine 1/2 cup orange juice 1/4 cup brandy 1/4 cup simple syrup (recipe below)

Prepare a grill or grill pan for medium heat; oil grates. Grill peach, plum, and nectarine halves, flipping once, until lightly charred and tender, 8–10 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and let cool, then cut into 1-inch chunks. Muddle grilled fruit and 6 halved cherries in a large pitcher with a wooden spoon. Top with wine, orange juice, brandy, and simple syrup; stir to incorporate. Chill at least 1 hour. Fill glasses with ice. Add sangria and muddled fruit and top each with a cherry. Simple syrup: For a single recipe, use 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water (whatever the quantity, use a 1:1 ratio of sugar and water). Place the sugar in a saucepan and add water, stirring over low heat until sugar dissolves. Remove to a clean jar or other container and refrigerate. Or mix the two in a pitcher and stir until the sugar dissolves.

ometimes a landscape gets tired and upkeep becomes a major headache. Matt Wells, a certified landscape designer and co-owner of Wells Hollow Landscaping, rejuvenated this rural landscape with a “less-is-more” approach, replacing worn-out existing plants with low-maintenance selections

and replacing deteriorating retaining walls with fieldstone. The original retaining wall was 17 years old and sagging in numerous places, says the owner. “And I hated the landscaping … it was way overplanted.” Fewer than 10 plant selections were used in the front and back yard, but those selected are repeated throughout the landscape for continuity and ease of care. “These are low-maintenance choices with low water requirements and better drought tolerance,” Wells explains. Hydrangeas, black-eyed Susans, prairie dropseed, false indigo (baptisia), corepo-

sis and Karl Forester ornamental grass are among the plants that are woven through beds and borders. In addition, Wells incorporated natural elements into some areas, such as the fieldstone wall near the patio. Some boulders were found on the property and others were brought in to create the sloping wall. The homeowner particularly likes the sedum blooming in the cracks and crevices. It’s a simple but effective look,” says Wells. “Boulders are natural and timeless, and they’ll never go out of style. It all works well with the property.”

Wells Hollow Landscaping designs and installs landscapes that transform outdoor spaces into beautiful, functional settings. Whether it’s softscape (plants, beds and borders), hardscape, such as a patio, retaining wall or other elements, or low-voltage landscape lighting — the company prides itself on bringing a homeowner’s vision to life. “With all our projects, we come out and evaluate the property and ask questions. The more you talk to homeowners, the more you learn about how they want to use their landscape and how they want it to look,” he explains.

‘’Lady of Shalott’ blooms with remarkable continuity throughout the season. Goldentoned salmon-pink flowers have a warm tea fragrance with pleasing hints of spiced apple and cloves. A large, shrubby rose with slightly arching stems, it is show here with late-season companion ‘Monch’ aster.

David Austin English Rose ‘Vanessa Bell’ offers soft lemon-yellow flowers held in large open clusters, accented by rounded buds tinged with rich pink, shown here with sweet pea “Cupani.” It blooms with abundance, being nearly covered with flowers from early summer till frost. Its compact growth habit is ideal for planting in the front of garden borders. The fragrance is described as green team with lemon and honey.

CUTTINGS texture, when they hit the mark for bloom time, sunlight and hardiness, when all of that comes together it’s magic.” Marriott believes that, ultimately, the best design choices are the ones that please a gardener personally. That said, over years of experimentation, he’s found fairly universal appeal in certain mixes. Asked to describe a sure crowd pleaser, he immediately suggests, “nearly any English Rose with blue flowers.” Here are some of Marriott’s tips for creating an fragrant mixed border: David Austin roses are shrub roses that are typically informal and shrubby, good for filling up spaces and pairing with other plants. They can be anything from 3- to 6-feet shrubs, depending on variety, climate and how they’re pruned.

David Austin Roses‌

David Austin English Rose ‘Desdemona’ is a spectacular rose known for its pristine white flowers, heady Old Rose fragrance and beautiful bush. It grows 4 feet tall by 3 feet wide. Here, ‘Desdemona’ is seen with mixed colors of Astrantia.

Needs: — Six or more hours of sun daily for best blooming. Roots need to stay damp and cool; plant where roses aren’t exposed to extreme afternoon sun. — Space individual bushes of the same variety 18 to 30 inches apart, depending on the variety and the climate. Positioned closely like this, as they grow, the bushes effectively knit together to create one large bush. Allow 3 to 4 feet between plants of neighboring varieties to allow access for deadheading, weeding and so on. A mix of different plant types — roses, shrubs, perennials, biennials and annuals – helps keep plants healthier by breaking up the monoculture. He also suggests adding plants known to attract beneficial insect, such as Some of the best candidates for this purpose are: Blue sea holly, agastache, goldenrods, parsley, bishop’s flower and fennel. Never plant perennials or other companions directly against the base of roses as they’ll deprive the roses of essential food and water. Roses need water and energy. Interplant instead. You want companions to cuddle up nicely to rose bushes but not to their root systems. A very general rule is to place companion plants 18 to 36 inches from the rose, depending on the

David Austin English Rose ‘Grace’ has apricotcolored flowers that mix beautifully with other flower colors, especially dark reds and purples. The fragrance is a delicious, warm and sensuous Tea Rose. The bush grows to 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide. ‘Grace’ is seen with purple companion plant Nepeta ‘Kit Kat’ (catmint).

projected mature size of both perennial and rose. Plant companions in clusters so no soil is visible between the plants at maturity. English roses shine in the company of plants with smaller flowers and interesting foliage. Thuggish perennials will take the lion’s share of water, nutrients and space. Hybrid varieties often have better habits. Space them generously and chop back, as needed. Wilder-looking plants look great with heirloom roses, too.

Design ideas — Spiky upright flowering spikes such as foxglove or veronica contrast wonderfully with the rounded, informal form of shrub roses. Or it can be the very soft rounded shape of the likes of Hakone grass. — Taller plants for the back of the bor-

der can set off the roses in front perfectly as long as the border is deep enough. Good choices include: giant scabious, delphinium and New England asters. Consider partnering roses with other summer-flowering shrubs. — Massed color is more pleasing to the eye. Scattered dollops of different colors feel choppy and insignificant. In larger borders it can be very effective to repeat the same plants (or clusters of the same plants) to draw the eye. Repetition with regular spacing creates one effect, with irregular spacing another. Complement yellow and apricot colored roses with similarly-hued plants like achillea “Gold Plate” or “Terracotta,” euphorbia “Fireglow,” helenium, geum, daylily and hakone “Aureola.” With pink and red roses, consider some of the pink geraniums like G. oxonianum and G. ‘Patricia’, sedum, Japanese anemones, aster and astrantia. For contrast, anything blue, purple or in the deep maroon-blue-black shades will work superbly. Pink and red with apricot can work wonderfully. The eyes will guide. Even extreme color combinations can work beautifully. The trick is to choose colors that sing with great gusto — not abrasiveness. To pre-test your hunches about certain color combinations, snip flowers in colors you like and carry them around to hold up to candidate partners – or arrange cut flowers in those colors in a vase. Some combos will sound a sour note, others will sing.

ELEMENTS

Create an

eco-friendly nursery What are the best ways to make sure your baby’s nursery is healthy, and has as little negative impact on the environment as possible? Some furniture upholstered with 100-percent natural fibers may have insides that include formaldehyde, flame retardants or other unhealthy chemicals, so find out what’s in them. High-quality natural fiber rugs can actually last longer than some synthetics. And they can be left undyed, or colored with vegetable dyes. Designer Paula Queen, founder of the children’s decor line Lil’ Pyar, suggests asking what dyes have been used on the rugs and fabrics you choose for a baby’s room. Also, ask where the items are being made and whether they will need to be shipped. Buying locally is the greenest option. Interior designer and HGTV host Vern Yip advises parents to choose nursery items that can be used for decades — even generations — to come. “Look at furniture that’s going into your nursery as long-term furniture, things they can use for their lifetime,” he says. “We didn’t really buy pieces, with the exception of the crib, that were intended for a nursery.” He also suggests looking at second-hand furniture and vintage items rather than buying something newly manufactured. These designers also recommend choosing chairs or tables that could be used elsewhere in your home in the future.

A nursery by interior designer Jenny Dina Kirschner uses non-VOC wall paint, organic cotton bedding and an organic cotton mattress can help create an eco-friendly and healthy space in a new baby’s bedroom.

And light the room for the longterm: Yip points out that we often leave lights on in a nursery, so choosing long-life LED bulbs is practical on two levels. Tired, busy parents don’t have to change light bulbs as often, and LEDs waste far less energy than conventional bulbs. Opt for items constructed from sustainably grown materials or made with environmental concerns in mind. Queen’s firm makes small seating poufs from canvas fabric remnants left over from other manufacturing.

For parents seeking an “eco-friendly” baby nursery, research the materials used not just for the surface upholstery, but also in manufacturing of the interior of any furniture you purchase.
