playing favorites

t’s been said that blue is America’s favorite color. It’s certainly the color cited most often as a favorite color, representing tranquility and the blue sky, but not all shades of blue are classic or retiring, notes color expert Leatrice Eiseman of Pantone Color Institute. Some blues are active and playful, not passive. Darker blues are viewed as credible, strong, confident and peaceful. Traditionally, deeper blues were used in dens, but today we’re using it in modern ways — indulging in its moody depths, brightening it with complementary colors, using it as an accent wall, or as accessories to ground a space. Try it in kitchens and dining rooms for a classic touch, or transform your bedroom into a restful retreat. Good lighting is imperative with darker hues because the depth of color absorbs light. You don’t want to make the room appear dreary.

neutral so that the important collectibles, such as a grandmother's quilt or a family portrait, stand out. And resist the urge to change things up from room to room. There's nothing wrong with painting every bathroom the same color. If you're itching for something to pop, try playing with textures or putting a piece of modern art in a sparse room. Avoid anything thematic. Many people are tempted to clutter up spaces with prints and patterns. If that suits your sensibility, great, but the way to create calm in a space is to avoid visual chaos.

armhouse style is the new decorating craze. It's easy to see the appeal of farmhouse living, with its fresh air, open pastures and recreational nature. In recent years, urban dwellers who appreciate the style's basic tenets have begun incorporating the look into their homes, with handcrafted furniture, historic collectibles and charming, nature-inspired decor. But don't get carried away. One of the biggest mistakes people make with farmhouse interiors is overdecorating, and it's the quickest way to make a room look dated. Keep patterns small and colors

living room without a reading chair is like a spa bathroom without a big tub. Something is missing. Add a cozy reading corner, though, and the room starts to get friendly. "Comfortable furniture will make you want to stay in the room, and any room that makes me want to actually spend time in there is a winner for me," says Emily Henderson, an L.A.-based stylist and author of "Styled." Henderson says the most important thing is comfort, "as you will be sitting in it for long periods of time." That doesn't mean the same thing to everyone. Once you find your match, you'll want a spot for your feet and adequate lighting. Look for a floor lamp with a height of 50 to 60 inches, ideally with a dimmer and without glare. Remember, Henderson says, “There's looking-at chairs and there's sitting-in chairs. The older you get, the more you gravitate toward sitting-in chairs."

hen you think "table," you're likely to imagine a set of four legs and a top. When furniture designers conjure up their creations, it’s much more than something you simply set alongside a sofa or chair. Tables were one of the main attractions at the spring Architectural Digest Design Show held in New York City. Designs from around the world were center stage, including the Holyfield side table. Straw marquetry, an age-old French woodworking technique, was used to craft the Holyfield, which is perched on a shapely bronze base and the niche has been given a saucy tomato red hue.

t all started with a shiner. That’s the tag for an exposed roofing nail that causes a leak like the one that ruined a corner of their daughter’s lower-level bedroom. While the repairs were being made, the homeowners started talking about an extensive remodel of the basement. In no time at all, they were immersed in plans. “As we got going, we began to think about the upstairs. It had been 15 years since we’d done anything up there, and it would be a little shabby looking compared to the downstairs when it was done, so we decided to tackle all of it,” he says. They enlisted builder Steve Johannes, interior designer Rhonda Staley, IIDA, of The Mansion, and Cabinet Studios to realize their dreams. Six years from that nail hole, the homeowners couldn’t be happier with the complete — and amazing — transformation of their home. All that’s left of the original ranch-style house on the 12acre property are a few grainy photographs and amusing memories. “We called it a ‘house barn’ because there were no windows on the front except a small one in front and the front
door sidelight. After the first few years we lived here, we tore off the first level and raised the roof for taller ceilings,” she recalls. This time they didn’t go up. They went down — digging down to add multiple lower levels to create an extensive family entertainment space with amenities including a big-screen TV, lounge area, cherry wood bar topped with marble, wine storage, a large exterior patio, indoor barbecue grill, hot tub, exercise room and a sports court. Yes, there’s a full-sized basketball court sunken into the lower level. “That’s a focal point for the kids, a place for them to hang out,” she says. A batting cage can be dragged out for baseball practice, and kids will find gymnastics equipment, stools for perching and peering over into the court to watch the action and lockers for storing gear. The homeowners credit Johannes — and his craftsmanship — for the concept of glass knee walls to divide the original 8-foot-basement from the new lower level, creating a visually uninterrupted flow. He also created the glass-surround staircase leading from the main floor. “They wanted the look and feel of a new home,” says Staley.

“We started in the master suite, flipping the bathroom and bedroom spaces for a better layout.” The space allowed placement of the MTI customizable tub with its clean, simple lines in front of a window. (It’s an ultra private view, by the way.) The great room, kitchen and dining room also were reconfigured. “I came up with the radical suggestion that we use the whole west side length of the great room as the dining area," Staley explains. "It would create a beautiful space that could accommodate a large number of guests — and who doesn’t want to sit at the window in a restaurant?” Multiple woods were used in the enlarged kitchen, which includes cherry cabinets, painted and glazed cabinets and a butcher’s block top made from walnut. There are two ovens — confection and steam — and a drawer microwave, multiple sinks, a Wolf range, double-door stainless steel refrigerator-freezer and coffee bar. The Café Rainforest marble with its rich shades of paprika, brown and ivory joins the color scheme together. “Furniture-style finishing on the cabinets makes the kitchen warm and friendly,” says Staley. Throughout the main level, 18- by 18square porcelain tiles with a pearlized finish are complemented by neutral walls painted in a Sherwin-Williams color, “Chopsticks.”

Additional support beams were required to support the limestone fireplace laid in both vertical and horizontal lines in the contemporary great room. “The whole assembly — cabinetry and fireplace — weights about 4,000 pounds. The limestone mantel has cuts in the back that lightened it by 600 pounds, and I’ll bet each one of those cabinet shelves weighs 150 pounds each,” the homeowner says. Cabinet Studios build the custom cabinetry throughout the home. “It was a true collaborative effort to do that fireplace. The whole house was a collaborative effort between everyone involved, and it turned out beautifully,” he says. Although the homeowners had purchased and stored new furniture pieces, Staley filled in with additional chairs, tables, artwork and accessories. “The biggest thing is, we didn’t want it over the top. We wanted a comfortable place for people to come over, plop down and enjoy. We love it. It’s very inviting and a great for entertaining,’ the homeowner adds. H&G

fter just a few short months living in their newly built custom home — hardly enough time to figure out which light switch controls what light — this family is thrilled with their new digs. Custom-built by Schuerman Construction, the elegant and spacious contemporary home basks in natural light, and there’s plenty of elbow room for hosting the homeowners’ frequent casual gatherings of family and friends. The double front doors swing open on two focal points — the sleek and crisp white kitchen and the equally dramatic great room with its coffered ceiling, floor-to-ceiling dark cabinetry and shelves and smooth, white cultured stone fireplace. “We wanted an open-concept living area. So far, it seems like we’re spending most of our time in these two areas,” including the kitchen, says the homeowner. She acknowledges that the family is just getting to know the house and what it’s like to live here. “We’ve done a lot of traveling and seen lots of things we wanted in our house and done lots of looking on Pinterest and Houzz. We knew we wanted a place where we could hang out.” The great room and kitchen are great for get-togethers because guests — and
conversation — can easily flow between these centers of action, as well as the patio with an outdoor fireplace. Sectional seating beckons guests to linger in the great room, which is visually tied to the kitchen with trim work, porcelain floor tiles and a soft gray color palette. The kitchen itself, designed with expertise from Mike Flanscha of Benton Building Center, boasts plenty of utility, convenience and practicality for meal preparation. There’s also plenty of storage for cooks who don’t want cluttered counters. Pristine white quartzite dresses countertops, including the island with its broad overhang that’s perfect for serving their busy kids a quick breakfast or supper. The dark finish on the island base is a pleasing contrast to white finished kitchen cabinets and gleaming stainless steel appliances. Drum-shaded fixtures above the island introduce a little bling into the space. “It’s so fresh and bright and looks wonderful with natural light streaming in the windows,” says the homeowner. Interior designer Kathy Cessna, Allied ASID, advised the homeowners on the project, as well, guiding them in furnishing and accessorizing the master bedroom suite. The suite also features a well-appointed closet and easily accessible — and organized — laundry room.

In their son’s bedroom, red, black and gray are dominant colors, while their daughter’s soft lavender bedroom is fit for a princess. Her pink bathroom features a custom-design chevron marble floor and underlit sink. A circular staircase — built and installed in pieces — with thick wood stairs leads to the lower level. Another space designed for entertaining, there is a lighted glass bar, game tables, exercise room, as well as guest bedrooms and a patio with a fireplace. “We spent a lot of time and love on this house, but we had no idea how well it would come together. Thanks to Rob (Schuerman) and everyone we worked with, it turned out exactly how we wanted it to be. We’ll be here for a lot of years to come,” the homeowner adds. H&G Fall 2016

ast October, the Chris Martin-Bettina Fabos household was awakened in the pre-dawn hours to their daughter's shouts of “Fire!” An orange wall of flames filled the view from upstairs bedroom windows. The garage was ablaze. As the distraught family hurried outside in their pajamas, their two cats in tow, smoldering embers and the fire’s intense heat ignited their home’s roof. The fire burned its way through the attic and second story, destroying everything in its path. “When we were finally able to get back into the house, the whole upstairs was burned black. It was scary. Fire had consumed everything. The family room and kitchen downstairs were so badly damaged by water and smoke. Upstairs the music room, bedrooms and bath were gone. It was all just devastating,” Bettina recalls. They’d bought the Craftsman-influenced house, built in 1911, in 2007 and devoted the next eight years to remodeling and updating the home to better suit their family. In an earlier incarnation, the house exterior had been red and was featured in the movie, “Sleeping With the Enemy,” based on Cedar Falls’ author Nancy Price’s popular novel. Harris Cleaning Services & Sales was hired to clean up the fire’s aftermath, and Magee Construction was contracted to recreate their beloved home. “We were so traumatized and confused, and Magee’s David Holien was such a central person throughout this process. He was marvelous. Brian Harris did a remarkable job. They understood how much all of this meant to us, and we feel so lucky those were the people we chose to work with,” Bettina explains.

It took nearly nine months for the house to be rebuilt. Initially the family lived at a hotel, then moved into an unfurnished rental home. “We scrounged spoons and forks and pots and pans and beds and mattresses and just everything,” she recalls. “Handling the insurance, the clean-up and construction and all the decisions that had to be made felt like another full-time job,” Chris says, noting that he and Bettina are professors at the University of Northern Iowa. Their daughters, Olivia, now 18,
and Sabine, 14, also regularly stopped by the construction site to watch as their home rose out of the ashes. They also kept an eye out for vintage and antique pieces from places like the Antique Spectacular Vintage Market, buying and storing furnishings in anticipation of moving back into their home. “We spent nine months trying to replace things we’d accumulated over years. We’re still slowly replacing things, but it feels like home again,” Bettina says.
The restored and rebuilt home closely resembles the original home. The girls are settling into their new bedrooms and beginning to collect personal treasures again. A slab of soapstone tops the bathroom vanity, and there’s a glassenclosed shower to complement the refinished clawfoot tub in the main bath. Instruments are being practiced again in the upstairs music room, and everyone enjoys gathering in the spacious family room. The fireplace has a

sandstone veneer with an imported Italian tile hearth. They wanted the kitchen to look exactly like the previous kitchen. Light birch wood cabinets from Bertch marry beautifully with the salvaged butcher block countertops and slatetopped table. “The top was made from an old blackboard reclaimed from a Waterloo school,” says Chris. “We leave messages to each other written on that table top,” interjects Bettina. The home’s original woodwork was carefully removed, cleaned and reinstalled. New oak flooring — with a golden finish — now runs throughout the kitchen and family room, described by Bettina as the biggest change. Upstairs 5 ½-inch wide oak planks were used in the music room. “We are beyond delighted with what Magee has done. We’re so happy to be back home,” she adds. H&G

he double A-frame architecture is visually arresting, and the home itself is perfectly situated to take advantage of the scenic rural setting. But a home like this has some tricky design challenges like odd angles and corners, as well as a lack of storage and the potential for wasted space. So after a series of appliance failures motivated the homeowners to update the space, they enlisted the professional expertise of interior designer Kathy Flack, ASID. “It was such a discombobulated space to begin with,” the homeowner recalls. “Red quarry tile in the family room, a free-standing fireplace in the middle of the room and stairs down into the space went the whole length of the kitchen. We had light oak floors and green cabinets in the kitchen and a white laminated countertop that changed colors from the KoolAid my kids would mix up.” She loved the idea of entertaining, but “I never felt comfortable doing it because there wasn’t space for people to move around, so I just didn’t.” They wanted a bigger, better functioning kitchen that used her antique round dining table and provided more accessible storage, as well as better traffic flow throughout both levels. “One of my first questions to Kathy was, ‘Is there any way we can have a banquette’ because they’re so convenient for kids to slide in and out,” she says. Flack made effective use of every inch of space. “The design of the interior space plan
and extending the previous step area to stage a booth seating area was critical in getting the answer to all their goals. By collaborating with all the contractors on the floor plan and lighting design and products, it was the key to making this kitchen efficient and functional. The products used to achieve the overall design are the aesthetic icing,” she says. This is a family home, so having kids in the kitchen was an important factor to consider. Handy stools now fit under the newly configured granite-topped island for quick meals. The sink is here, too, so the homeowner can enjoy the view while chopping vegetables. Opposite is an induction stovetop and double ovens. Cabinets are finished in warm antique white, a nice contrast to the darker oak flooring and slate mosaic backsplash. “I was worried about Kathy’s suggestion for antique white cabinets, but they’re beautiful and perfect with the soft gray walls. I love my hardware, too, all the knobs and the little things, the little touches that just complete the kitchen,” the homeowner explains, like the baking zone with its stand mixer that pneumatically raises and lowers and a media drawer with docking station. Flack made the most of the A-frame's nooks and crannies to create more storage and even a compact bar area with beverage fridge. In order to accommodate the five-foot bump-out for additional kitchen space, the stairs are now accessible on either side of the seating area.

Now the family room is a popular place to play board games and spend family time. There’s a modern flush-front fireplace with a slate mosaic tile surround and space for a sofa, roomy leather chair, hefty ottoman that doubles as a coffee table — and still, that marvelous view of the woods. “I get up early in the morning and come
down here, get my cup of coffee and sit in the family room and gaze out the window, read or pray. If there’s a chill in the house, even in the summer, I’ll put on the fireplace. It’s my retreat, my private time, and I love this space. I feel so blessed,” says the homeowner. H&G

LGC Homes builder Kyle Larson and his wife, Lori, undertook an extensive remodel of their existing home. The project began last August to add a second story and make other changes to their existing home. CVHG has been following along with the project this year. The exterior work is nearly complete, and finishing details are being added. Soon, the Larsons will be moving into the final phase — decorating and accessorizing their brand new second story.

“Right now we’re working on some of the last major components like the countertops, plumbing and light fixtures, and the staircase and railing,” says Kyle. “The stairs have been several months in the making. We’re moving out of the basement, organizing, purging and finishing stuff. We’re all over the place right now, but we’re trying to take it a room at a time.” Watch for the big reveal in our holiday issue coming in November!

Fall harvest meals Fall 2016

entertaining/Hy-Vee Before the vegetable garden takes its last gasp, and farmers’ markets roll up for the season, make the most of the season’s produce to create a harvest feast. These recipes from Chef William Gerstenberger at Crossroads Hy-Vee make use of hot peppers, heirloom tomatoes and herbs, and all are easy to prepare without a lot of fuss.
Chef William’s Turkey Taco Pasta with Black Bean Noodles Taco Pasta Sauce: 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil ½ pound ground turkey 1 tablespoon taco seasoning 1 24-ounce jar of mild to hot salsa ½ cup sour cream Taco Pasta: 1 7-ounce package black bean noodles (in health markets) 1 cup finely shredded iceberg lettuce 1 cup finely shredded red cabbage 1 medium tomato, chopped 1 cup Mexican cheese blend Prepare black bean pasta as instructed on the package, almost. I pull my pastas about 1-2 minutes earlier than what the package reads. I like mine more al dente. While pasta is cooking, prepare the sauce. In a large skillet over low to medium heat, add the olive oil. When it begins to shimmer, add turkey and sauté until it is fully cooked. Sprinkle taco seasoning and toss and coat turkey. Add the salsa and sour cream to the skillet. Stir to fully combine and allow to simmer for five minutes or so over medium heat. Keep it moving so you don’t burn it.
Executive Chef William Gerstenberger is a globally trained chef who has cook for celebrities and presidential candidates. The Iowan began his career in California, but moved back to the state several years ago to join the Hy-Vee Crossroads team in Waterloo.
When the pasta has been cooked and drained, add it to a serving bowl. Layer the sauce on top of the noodles followed by the lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes and the cheese. Serve immediately with some hot! sauce and a Dos Equis cold one.

entertaining/Hy-Vee Jalapeno Popper Corn Fritters 2 cups of corn 1 cup flour (or corn flour, or rice flour, etc.) 1 egg ½ cup cheddar cheese, grated 2 jalapeno peppers, diced ¼ cup cream cheese, room temperature 2 slices cooked bacon, crumbled 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon coriander, toasted and ground 2 green onions, sliced 1 handful cilantro, chopped 1 lime, juiced and zest 2 tablespoons canola oil ¼ cup sour cream
Cauliflower Crust Chicken Pizza 1 medium head of cauliflower, cut in to florets 1 egg 1 cup of chicken, cooked and shredded ½ cup barbecue sauce ¾ cup mozzarella ¼ cup Parmigiano Reggiano ¼ cup red onion, thinly sliced 2 tablespoon cilantro, “torn” 1 teaspoon of dried oregano or Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt and pepper, to taste
Rice cauliflower in a food processor, place in microwave safe dish and microwave for 8 minutes. Place cauliflower in a towel and squeeze out as much moisture as you can.
Mix corn, flour, egg, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, jalapenos, bacon, paprika, coriander, green onion, cilantro and lime juice in a bowl. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat, form into ¼ cup patties and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Finish by adding a dollop of sour cream to each one of the fritters. Makes about 6 fritters, 3 per person.
For crust: Mix together cauliflower, egg, mozzarella, parmesan cheese, oregano or Italian seasoning, salt and pepper. Press mixture onto a baking mat or parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 450 F oven until lightly golden brown for about 15 to 20 minutes. For the pizza: Mix chicken and barbecue sauce. Top crust with chicken, mozzarella and red onion. Bake until cheese is golden brown and bubbling, about 10-15 minutes. Garnish with cilantro.

ummer menu planning is the easiest. Between the choicest produce (fresh strawberry pie!) and the perfect weather for grilling (beer brats for days!), dinner's never farther away than a trip to the grocery or the farmers market. Fall menus are the worst. Sure, I can come up with a litany of desserts — the endless versatility of apples, pumpkin and caramel make that a cinch. Savory dishes are tougher. The quick foods of summer have become blase, but it's not quite time for the ultra-rich comfort foods we use to cope with the winter doldrums. I don't really want a bowl of piping hot chili on a 70-degree day in September. But that's why I like this trio of dishes: Meatballs and Kielbasa, Loaded Baked Potato Salad and Smoky Avocado Dip.
Together, they make a great spread for a football viewing party or an evening bonfire. Separately, they're great for potlucks or plugging holes in a weeknight menu. I would eat the barbecue sauce that coats the meatballs with a spoon. I've actually been meaning to tinker with it to thicken it up and keep it jarred in my fridge, because I like it better than any store-bought stuff. And if kielbasa's not your thing, make a double batch of meatballs, and call it good. The potato salad really does have all the elements of a loaded baked potato: bacon, cheese, sour cream and green onions. It's substantially heartier than a typical mustardbased potato salad — not that I'm complaining. The smoky part of the avocado dip is the chipotle pepper and accompanying adobo sauce. If you find it too spicy or you're looking for a cleaner flavor profile, ditch the pepper and use some cayenne to get the heat where you want it.
alan simmer/on cooking Cocktail Meatballs and Kielbasa
Meatballs 2 slices high-quality white sandwich bread 1/3 cup buttermilk 3/4 pound 80 percent lean ground beef 1/4 pound ground pork 1/4 grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley 1 large egg yolk 1 garlic clove, minced Salt and pepper Sauce 1 pound kielbasa sausage, sliced 1/4-inch thick 2 cups ketchup 1 cup packed dark brown sugar 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 1/2 cup water 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon Worcestershire 2 garlic cloves, minced Salt Tabasco Adjust an oven rack to the middle position and heat the oven to 400 F. Remove and discard the crusts from the bread, then tear the bread into small pieces. Mash the bread pieces and buttermilk to a smooth paste in a large bowl, using a fork. Add the beef, pork, Parmesan, parsley, yolk, garlic, 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper to the mashed bread. Stir the mixture gently until combined and uniform. Gently form the mixture into 3/4-inch balls, about 70 meatballs. Spread the meatballs on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until cooked through, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a plate lined with a paper towel to drain.
Source: America's Test Kitchen
Meanwhile, cook the kielbasa in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, water, mustard, Worcestershire and garlic. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes. Add the meatballs to the sauce and cook for 10 minutes. Season with salt and Tabasco. Transfer to a bowl and serve immediately or keep warm in a crockpot for up to 4 hours. Chef's notes: You can use whatever hot sauce you like; I favor sriracha and it works just fine here. I can never make the meatballs small enough — I usually end up with about half of what I'm supposed to, but that size seems just fine to me.
Loaded Baked Potato Salad 4 pounds russet potatoes 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 cup mayonnaise 3/4 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 pound bacon, cooked, cooled and crumbled into bite-size pieces 6 green onions, chopped 1 1/2 cups medium cheddar cheese, shredded
Preheat oven to 400 F. Place the cleaned potatoes on a foil-lined baking sheet and pierce five times with a fork. Lightly coat with olive oil and cook for 50-60 minutes or until fork tender. Remove from the oven and let cool. Cut the potatoes into 1-inch chunks and place in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle with the vinegar and let rest for 15-30 minutes. Mix the mayonnaise and sour cream in a small bowl and add salt and pepper. Add to the potatoes, then stir in the bacon, green onion and cheddar cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight before serving. Chef's notes: If you don't like potato skins, you can remove them, but then you might as well chop and boil the potatoes instead. As long as your oven is hot, you can put the bacon on the baking sheet you used for the potatoes and save yourself the grease splatter on the stovetop; I find 12 strips fit reliably on a half-sheet pan, so I often reduce the amount to what I can cook in one batch.

impressive sticky Who can resist a gooey-rich and scrumptious Caramel Pecan Roll? It’s probably the perfect breakfast offering to family and friends gathered around the table while leaves fall and drift outside the window. This recipe calls for a yellow cake mix as the foundation, but it’s still a yeast roll. The carameland-pecan topping is classic — and delicious.

Caramel Pecan Rolls 1 box Jiffy yellow cake mix 2 ½ to 3 cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 1 ¼ cup warm water (110-115 F) 1 teaspoon sugar 1 package yeast or scant tablespoon 1 stick butter, softened ½ cup sugar 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 cup packed brown sugar ½ cup dark corn syrup 2/3 cups pecan halves
Sift together dry ingredients. Mix together warm water, sugar and yeast. Allow yeast to proof enough to see small bubbles rise to the top. Mix dry and wet ingredients together; let rest 15 minutes. Knead until smooth or use bread maker to knead. Let rise to double in bulk. Roll out on a lightly floured surface. Spread with ¾ stick of butter. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar (1/2 cup sugar with 2 teaspoons of cinnamon).
Roll up into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place into buttered large muffin tins. Melt ¼ cup butter, brown sugar and corn syrup. Spread into 12 large muffin tins. Sprinkle pecan halves over the sugar mixture, approximately 4 to 6 pecan halves into each muffin tin. Let rolls rise and double in size. The muffin tin can be covered and refrigerated overnight before allowing the rolls to rise. Bake at 350 F for 18 to 20 minutes. Allow to set briefly before turning out. Cook’s note: Cake mix keeps rolls from drying out as quickly as regular sweet rolls. If desired, leave out pecans. Instead mix together 1/3 cup melted butter and ½ cup brown sugar and place in bottom of 9x13-inch buttered pan. Allow to rise until double. Bake 20 minutes at 350 F.

tulips S
pecies or wild tulips are longlived, reliable little sweethearts ranging in size from 4 inches to 12 inches high, with most in the range of 5 to 6 inches tall. Ideal for rock gardens, species tulips are just as effective clustered at the front of a border, scattered in bare spots in the yard or beds, or any sunny, well-drained location. Fall is the time to plant tulips, and these make the best statement planted in large clumps or mass planted. They happily naturalize, too. Species tulips should be planted 4 to 5 inches deep and 6 inches apart.

othing brings a room to life more beautifully than flowers, especially in autumn. Think sunflowers, dahlias, mums, herbs, seedheads, ornamental grass fronds, oak and maple twigs, hydrangeas, bird feathers, viburnum berries, ferns, hosta leaves, Chinese lanterns … you get the idea. Or let your grocery store do the work with their grab-and-go bouquets. Pick a fall color scheme and choose one or two bouquets, then fill in with produce like artichokes, kale, pumpkins, gourds and grapes, along with your own yard trimmings. Here’s a tip: If you don’t have enough of the real thing, don’t be afraid to intersperse faux flowers and berries with the real thing. It’s a fool-the-eye trick, and because today’s silk flowers look so real, no one will ever suspect! Our ideas range from the “how-easy-is-that!” technique of tucking single blooms into vases, jars or even coffee mugs and gathering them on a tray, to gathering a clutch of colorful fall leaves and arranging them simply in a Mason jar or vase. For a statement piece, create a baroque bouquet with lush red roses against a backdrop of yard trimmings and fresh or faux berries.
