n 2016, Pantone invites you to reconsider your feelings about pale pink and blue. Instead of remembering them as stuffy or relegating them to nurseries, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director for Pantone Color Institute, suggests pairing the pastel "colors of the year," Rose Quartz and Serenity, with the bold colors of recent years. It will make both feel fresh. "Step outside of the mind-set of blue for boys and pink for girls," Eiseman says. "These are not weak baby colors. They have a bit more strength than that, and more to say." As the world's foremost color-trend watcher, Eiseman had noticed blush pink and a soft periwinkle blue popping up on runways and in interiors, but it was a retrospective for 20th-century American painter Agnes Martin at the Tate Modern in London that arrested her attention. "I

was just taken aback," Eiseman says of Martin's work, which used pale color washes in abstract forms. "It was an unexpected usage of color in a grid or in stripings, and yet it has this quiet, soft, inviting feel about it." But it's the pairing of these soft pastels with other colors that really has Eiseman jazzed. Take a rich chocolate or modern aubergine, for example, and add a blush pink or a lighter blue (don't stress over matching Rose Quartz and Serenity exactly), and you have a fresh start. And isn't that what trends are all about? Trends are just like seasons: They feed our desire for variety and change. But if change comes slowly for you, "the tabletop is a wonderful place to experiment with color combinations," Eiseman says.

Charming but not cloying, Sherwin Williams “In the Pink, a play on the Rose Quartz color, is a soothing option for the bath.

ELEMENTS How to use Rose Quartz and Serenity:

Instead of using a single color throughout, think of either blending the colors together or using a single color with a neutral base color such as black, taupe, white or charcoal gray and perhaps using the other Pantone color as an accent. In general, one of the easiest ways to use color successfully is to start with a neutral palette and layer your color. For example, begin with a neutral base, perhaps a primary piece of furniture such as a sofa or chair, and then build your color palette by adding accessories and accents. Some of the best ways to incorporate the Pantone colors into your existing colors will be through the use of accessories such as vases, trays, lacquered boxes, artwork and even coffee table books. Also, don’t forget simple touches. Even a pink peony in a small vase would blend beautifully in a Serenity blue room.

Rose Quartz

Pink has been on trend for quite some time. From soft hues to hot pink, it remains a dominating force in home decor. Pink is not a feminine color, but truly gender-neutral. I am sure we have all seen a lovely men’s pink cashmere sweater or gorgeous pink tie. Consider Rose Quartz as a perfect color to blend with brighter bolder colors, because of its soft and soothing qualities it will help tame other colors. Some great colors to pair with Rose Quartz include charcoal gray, white and black.

Serenity

What a fabulous blue hue! This shade of blue is just like a great black dress — you can dress it up or down. The shade is both on trend and timeless. As a result, you can use it in nearly every room of the house. One room you may not have thought of is the kitchen. These days, everyone is looking for ways to spice up their kitchen, so why not do so with a little color? And for other rooms of the home, there is nothing more soothing than a blue bathroom or bedroom.

eopard prints have leapt back into the spotlight in home furnishings. Upholstery is sporting the exotic animal pattern, but lamps, rugs and occasional pieces also have their wild side. The look of leopard is timeless whether it's a pillbox hat or a pouf, but we no longer have to harm the big cats to get their pattern. Unless you are a naturalist, it's hard to tell cheetah and jaguar prints from leopard, but all of them are stocking home interiors. "Leopard spots in textiles can be traced back to the 17th century," noted Tina Nicole, designer and co-owner of Nathan Anthony. She shows the frame of the Ansonia/U chair with a black-and-white colored cheetah/ leopard fabric on the legs. The look was inspired by a jumpsuit she saw at the Milan fashion show. "I like it when animal prints get a modern interpretation, and I think there's always a place to mix these compelling patterns into home decor," she said.

One of the most remarked about pieces is a lowback Charmer chair by Kara Mann upholstered in a tattooed leather leopard print. The interior designer, who reinvented Baker Furniture's Milling Road Collection, says a leopard print is always in style. "It adds an effortless chic to any space," she said. She considers it a neutral because it mixes with so many colors, patterns and styles. "It is timeless." "Animal patterns, be they print or woven, never go out of style, and designers are always exploring new ways to utilize them in fashion and interiors," said Cecil Adams, creative director for Currey & Company. The company's Gilbert bench is a modern take on predator prints. "One of the current trends is to explode the scale of the pattern, which creates a more contemporary vibe when the fabric is applied to a chair or bench or even wall art," he said. Thayer Coggin, meanwhile, covered its Cool Roger chair in large black and white animal spots, which

paired nicely with the sleek shiny steel frame. And you don't have to be a big game hunter to spot Jamie Young's Littlefield chair and ottoman with leopard print hide as well as the occasional boxes covered in it. Tobi Fairley's Elle chair for CR Laine is upholstered in leopard spots on a 100 percent cotton fabric with the luxurious feel of faux velvet. It makes you want to curl up on one. "For this year, we are modernly classic," declared Hennessy Wayser, owner of French Heritage. Among the pieces exemplifying that aesthetic are the decoupage chest made in Florence, Italy, and classic armchairs covered in a leopard print. Also taking a very classic chair and showing off its animal instinct was Highland House. The newly reinvented furniture maker has a youthful vibe, thanks to its millennial president, Nathan Copeland. Lillian August of Hickory White makes a strong statement on spots with the dark walnut-framed Drake sofa fully upholstered in a leopard print fabric called Jamil Gold. "Leopard has evolved into a neutral. A pop of leopard can go in every room as the perfect finishing touch," said Jamie Young, president of Jamie Young Co. uscular. Brawny. Disruptive. They don't sound like descriptors for home décor, do they? Yet they perfectly describe one of the most interesting new directions in furniture and accessories: Brutalist décor. Brutalist architecture was popularized by Le Corbusier in the 1950s. A departure from the intricate Beaux Arts building style, it was all about spare geometric forms, and materials like unfinished concrete, steel and glass. New York's Whitney Museum of American Art is a Brutalist design by Marcel Breuer. Paul Rudolph designed the Art and Architecture Building at Yale. The style moved into interior décor that also played with abstract forms and rough textures, adding an earthy color palette and incorporating other materials like wood, plaster and marble. Furniture by designers like Paul Evans and Curtis Jere found fans, and the style caught fire during the '60s and '70s. There are nice examples on the sets of the movie "American Hustle" and TV's "Mad Men."

CUTTINGS So why is Brutalism once again having a moment? "Brutalism is derived from the French word 'brut,' or raw, and I think it's that sense of rawness that design lovers are attracted to today," ventures Anna Brockaway, co-founder and curator of the online vintage-design marketplace Chairish. "Because of their brawny heaviness, imperfect finishes and rough, uneven dimensions, Brutalist pieces deliver gutsy gravitas to a space.”

righten up your walls this spring by switching out your art. You can build and paint your own frames and fill them with inexpensive decorative paper poster prints, salvaged maps or a poster you love. You’ll need: 1 by 4 boards (four for each frame you’re making), fiberboard backing, craft spray adhesive (we like Elmer’s Craftbond Spray Adhesive), corner fasteners such as corrugated metal fasteners or flat L brackets and screws, wall hangers, ¾-inch screws, screwdriver, poster prints, Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan and Soft Wax. FIG & FROLIC

HERE’S HOW:

01 Cut pieces for frame sides and back

to size based on print size. This can be a DIY project or ask at your local home improvement store to cut boards to size. It’s usually an inexpensive option. Leave an extra 2 inches on each side of your print when determining the size of the back. Our print measured 20 by 28 inches, so we cut the back 24 by 32 inches. This leaves room for screws that will fasten the back to the frame.

02 We used corrugated metal

fasteners for corner fasteners in creating the frame, using clamps to hold boards together while inserting fasteners. You may not need clamps with L brackets and screws.

03

Paint the frame as desired. We used Barcelona Orange, Florence, English Yellow, Old Ochre, and Emperor's Silk from Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan and her soft wax product. Set frame aside.

04

Spray fiberboard back with spray adhesive according to instructions, making sure coverage is even. The adhesive may have to “set up” a few minutes before proceeding to the next step.

05 Print side up, lay poster atop

the adhesive, smoothing it flat with your hands. Lift at corners to remove air bubbles, taking care not to tear print.

06 Place frame on top of print, centering the print in the frame.

07 Holding the frame and back

together, flip both pieces over. Don’t let pieces slide or your print won’t be centered. Use ¾-inch screws to attach the backboard to the frame.

of frame and hang your new artwork.

ou drive in and out of it nearly every day. Each time you mutter to yourself, “We've really got to organize this mess.” Let’s face it — garages can be messy. Beyond a place to park the car, today’s garage often ends up as the dumping ground for things like gardening supplies, sports gears, ladders, outdoor holiday decorations and just plain stuff that doesn’t have another home. It’s time to get organized, says Brandon Davis of Christie Door Co. His company is now selling and installing organizing modules and systems specifically for garages. “People get the itch to organize, and we want to help them do that. There are lots of cheaply made options out there, but we looked for systems that are higher quality and have good

value for our customers,” Davis explains. You can spend as little or as much as you can afford. Flow Wall systems make organizing easy with cabinets, racks and shelves, as well as wall organizers for hanging bikes and other gear. Christie also carries the industrial-strength UltiMate system, chosen as the best-buy cabinet by Consumer Reports, and the Moduline collection, offering professionalgrade cabinet systems and more value-oriented options. “Garage storage systems make the most of the space and can make a garage an attractive place that won’t embarrass the homeowner,” Davis says. Christie Door Co. can install the units or deliver the units for DIY installers.

Start by cleaning out the garage. Haul out everything — yes, we mean everything — and start sorting. Garden tools go there, auto repair tools go there. You get the idea.

Toss out broken tools, toys, worn-out sports gear and those items you never use (and frankly don’t remember ever buying).

Thoroughly clean the garage floor. Decide if you want to jazz it up with a garage floor coating of concrete stain, epoxy paint, a snap-together tile system or other option.

Give the walls a fresh coating of paint. Be bold with color — who says it has to look like a garage?

Complete Design Service Austin’s Interiors & Design is a retail home furnishings store with 40 years of experience. Everything you need for your home is available here. Design, quality & service have been our building blocks while we stay price competitive.

Think about what you have to store and how you want to store it. Numerous component systems are on the market that can be as basic or as elaborate as desired.

Is there room for a work bench? Or maybe you’re envisioning a man-cave vibe with a beverage fridge and a place to perch with pals to watch TV. Now’s the time to make room.

Go vertical by storing ladders, bicycles and other items on wall hooks, slat walls and shelves.

hen her husband spotted a “for sale” sign in the front yard of a 21/2-story Victorian-era house, he immediately called his wife, and they snatched it up. Some people might have seen the Italianate Victorian as a white elephant or money pit, but these homeowners were willing to look beyond the peeling wallpaper, outdated kitchen and bathrooms and overall dilapidated condition. What they noticed was the home’s architectural splendor, the graceful entrance with its elaborate parquet floors and stained glass imported from England, spacious rooms with high ceilings and fir floors, original butternut woodwork and crown molding, massive Eastlakestyle pocket doors and claw-foot hardware at each tall, slender window. “It definitely needed some TLC — and the right contractor to make it into something really special again,” says the homeowner. So they hired Mark Kennedy of Kennedy Construction Inc., appreciating his sensitivity and experience at renovating historic properties. Architect on the project was Thomas McInerney. The house was built in either 1879 or 1883 — “there are two opinions on that, but either way, it’s a 19th-century home, and it was in need of repair,” she says. “There’s a synergy about this house, how we found it, and how

it all came together.” A lengthy things-to-do list included removing the old boiler and radiators, installing a new heating/cooling system, new electrical and plumbing, gutting and remodeling the kitchen, removing the stairwell, removing wallpaper, repairing plaster and eliminating the servant's quarters on the second level to make room for a master bath and laundry room. Some interior wood was refinished, but the homeowners also like the vintage effect of old, alligatored finishes. New storm windows were installed throughout, and the exterior was painted and new stairs and railings built for the front porch. Renovation began in January 2013, and the couple moved in with their two Great Danes and Tibetan terrier six months later. The homeowner also enlisted the design expertise of Rhonda Staley, IIDA, interior designer at The Mansion in Iowa City. “I thought the interiors shouldn’t be heavy and dark, but still feel right for the era of the house. The overall style juxtaposes traditional and modern — traditional furnishings and the owners’ eclectic mix of modern art that adds fun pops of color,” Staley explains. As guests enter the home, they’re greeted by a life-sized Great Dane bronze sculpture by Louis Petersen. In the front parlor, the large and colorful Hunter Slonem painting of lories (parrots)

inspired the choice of soft blue chenille for sofa and club chair, accented by pillows and an accent chair dressed in a Brunschwig and Fils striped fabric. A substantial round leather ottoman doubles as a table, and the entire space is grounded by a custom wool Davis and Davis area rug. Embroidered linen Roman shades at the windows don’t conceal trim or hardware. The fireplace features its original metal fireplace doors, decorative tiles crafted in factory in Trent, N.J., and substantial wood surround with pillars and carvings. Rather than a painting, Staley found a reproduction mantel mirror from Theodore Alexander that fits in perfectly. A cozy, dog-friendly second parlor is outfitted with comfortable but iron-wearing chenille. This is where the family hangs out and watches television. The homeowners love to entertain, and their beautifully renovated kitchen is the perfect staging area. For an authentic look, they chose soapstone to top counters and island, which is a prep station and breakfast bar, and apron sinks. Decorative tiles punctuate an expansive backsplash of white subway tiles, and the floor is porcelain tiles. Above the island, a tray ceiling and trio of pendants showcase a preserved portion of the original tin ceiling. A Melanie Simard painting introduces additional warmth. An arched hallway leads to the formal dining room. Staley found a Kravet fabric that reproduces the Slonem parrot motif and used it for window valances and the fronts of matching Pearson host chairs at the Hickory White table. “The dining room was a question in my mind, then this fabric came along and it’s one of those elements of design that keeps rhythm throughout the house,” Staley explains. Above the buffet, a quilt wall hanging by Meg Prange of Russell charmingly reproduces the Victorian home, complete with dogs in the front yard. “This is the most perfect home,” says the homeowner. “I feel happy every time I walk in the door. I love the size of the rooms, and there’s a light feeling throughout. I love this home.” H&G

he decision to build a home was a relatively easy one. With three young girls, the family had outgrown their current house and needed more living space. The couple enlisted Panther Builders to realize their dream: An open-concept, walk-out ranch and bedrooms for their children – ages 2, 4 and 7 — on the main level with the master bedroom. They also wanted a comfortable, family-friendly home with hints of Craftsman style. Equally important was a bright, cheerful and highly functioning kitchen. “The kitchen is the hub of our house. Everyone gathers here. I wanted good quality cabinets. That was important, and I wanted white. We came from a home where the cabinets were brown and not very good quality. I also wanted the cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling,” says the homeowner. She got her wish. Crisp white custom cabinetry from West Ridge Cabinets rises to the ceiling. White subway tile is clean and streamlined, complementing the Frosty carrina quartz that dresses countertops and island. The island houses the kitchen sink, and metal stools on the bar side provides a setting for breakfast and snacks, or simply hanging out and visiting with the cook. The family moved into the home in November, and they’re still shopping for wall art and other accessories. For ease of

design, the same white subway tile and quartz are repeated in bathrooms. “We wanted a cohesive, flowing feeling to the house. I like the minimal look. I don’t like clutter. Buying accessories and figuring out where to use them gives me lots of anxiety,” she says, laughing. A tray ceiling defines the lightfilled, open living area, anchored by soft pile carpeting that visually separates it from the rest of the living space. The stacked-stone fireplace and built-in cabinetry creates a homey atmosphere — and a place to stash the kids’ board games. Soft gray and white wall and trim colors flow throughout the home. Eight-foot-tall doors — a signature in Panther-built homes — add a bit of drama. Darkstained hand-scraped engineered hardwood planks run throughout the hallway and kitchen. The much-appreciated mud room with built-in cabinetry and lots of storage is the perfect drop-zone for backpacks, boots and other gear. All Panther-built homes are built with smarthome components, including security cameras. “We can check on each of the girls’ rooms, even from our phones,” the homeowner notes. In the master bath, they sacrificed a tub for a large shower. “The girls love that, and I love the materials — the quartz, the stone pebble floor in the shower. It’s a relaxing space,” she says.

A cut-out in the master closet allows a clothes basket to be shoved through to the laundry room to save steps, a convenience the homeowners appreciate. Nine-foot ceilings and plenty of light makes the walk-out lower level feel spacious and very un-basement-like. Barn doors slide into place to hide the children’s play area, and a bar area provides an area for entertaining or snacking while watching television. “We can’t say enough good things about Panther and their subcontractors,” the homeowner adds. “There was very open communication, everything was upfront, and we know the home will wear well for our family because it was well-built.” H&G

he dishwasher failed the week before the kitchen was gutted. Maybe it was a sign that Adam and Meghan Meyer were on the right track in remodeling their ‘70s era kitchen. The couple worked with Megan Hannam of Select Cabinetry and Design in planning and executing a new kitchen design plan. “They wanted to create a functional kitchen for a growing family,” Hannam says. One wall came down and a formal sitting room became part of the enlarged kitchen, providing dining space that had been missing in the kitchen’s previous incarnation. Additional space allowed for a more sensible arrangement of appliances and a pantry, as well as space for an island. Adam did about 75 percent of the work himself, including demolition, framing and building, plumbing and electrical work, installing countertops, floor, backsplash tile, cabinetry and fixtures. “I like doing things myself, and if I can do it, I will,” he says. Maple countertops were constructed from a salvaged bowling alley floor. After sanding it level with a table sander, Adam pieced it together and stabilized it, adding new maple trim as the finishing touch. Waterlox sealer/semi-gloss finish provides durability and is safe for food preparation. A peninsula provides space for breakfast and snacks, as well as

kids’ craft projects while Meghan is busy in the kitchen. The warm honey tone of the countertops is a perfect counterpoint to 2- by 4-inch white tiles with dark gray grouting and maple Omega cabinets with an opaque pearl finish. They wanted white cabinets — not bright white, but soft white. The overlay construction, flat-panel door and crown molding at the top give it a polished look. A pantry center on the opposite wall has applied molding for furniture appeal. At one end is a drop zone for keys and odds and ends, and at the opposite is a small staging area near the dining area. An island soon will be installed in the kitchen, as well, providing an additional work zone. Underfoot is a dark-finished maple engineered hardwood floor from Simpson’s. The handscraped finish is durable for children and the family dog. “We were concerned that dark floors would make the kitchen too dark, but with light gray walls and white cabinets, it’s a bright kitchen. We’ve had the same floor in the foyer for a few years, and it wears well,” Adam explains. Some people like being involved in as much of the process as they can, and some people get overwhelmed by it. Adam’s DIY nature and craftsmanship shone through all phases of the project. H&G

Growing family, going up:

Part 3

written By

Melody Parker

LGC Homes builder Kyle Larson and his wife, Lori, decided to add a second story to their existing home. CVHG is following along with the project, and this is the latest installment.

A few more laps and the finish line will be in sight on the renovation to the Larsons’ 7-yearold home. The interior framing, electrical and plumbing are completed and drywall is going up. “After that, it’s on to the fun part with the painting and finishing,” says Larson. “We’re neckdeep in debating decisions we thought we’d already finalized. But those were really ideas, not bonafide decisions with sources and selections made.”

Matthew Putney

When the home was built, the Larsons intentionally chose a modern, minimalist approach to the interiors — lots of stark black and white. Then along came three children and their lifestyle changed dramatically. Rather than build a new home, they added a second story and are taking a more “organic” approach to their design and decorating choices.

The new look The addition of stairs to the second floor has meant reconfiguring space on the main living level. European white oak flooring will flow throughout the main floor and better half of the second floor. The second floor will have a loft-like look. A master bedroom retreat is being designed with a large California closet that will maximize storage and dressing space.

GROWING FAMILY; GOING UP “Removing clothes and things from the bedroom equation will change the feeling of the space and add a sense of calm and serenity — and restore the aesthetic we signed up for originally when we built the house,” Larson explains. The master bath will be stark white. “Getting whites to match is daunting, though, but we’ll use textures to give the space dimension.” Meanwhile, the family is living in the basement. “It’s been a pretty mild winter, so it hasn’t been too bad. The kids are having fun; it’s the adults who need the space. The worst of it was after Christmas with all the kids’ presents. I didn’t realize how really tight the quarters were until I put my foot through a doll table,” he adds, laughing. H&G

Salad supper

Spring 2016

46

entertaining

No rule says salads have to be side dishes. Why not whip up one of these fresh, appealing and great-tasting salads for supper? These recipes were created by Chef Todd Deobald from Crossroads Hy-Vee in Waterloo, including the Creamy Cucumber Salad, a “mom classic which I’ve adjusted slightly.”

Polish Creamy Cucumber Salad Serves 10

Peel cucumbers alternating across the skin lengthwise, so you have both green cucumber skin and white flesh showing. Slice cucumbers approximately ¼ inch thick; place in a bowl. Sprinkle with salt and let stand for at least one hour.

Middle Eastern Tabboulah Salad Serves 10 1 pound bulgur ¼ bunch chopped parsley 2 tomatoes, quartered, seeded and diced 1 tablespoon red onion, finely diced ½ tablespoon fresh mint, chopped Dressing ½ cup lemon juice 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 cup canola oil (may need to adjust) Salt and pepper, taste

After one hour, drain cucumbers and add red onions and dill.

Place bulgur in a bowl and cover with warm water. Soak for at least 30 minutes or until cool. Drain off any excess liquid.

Mix sour cream and white vinegar in a bowl and taste. Add more vinegar, if desired. Pour dressing over drained cucumbers, add salt and pepper and mix well.

Quarter tomatoes and remove seeds prior to dicing. In a large bowl, add prepared ingredients except dressing. In a separate bowl, add lemon juice and Dijon mustard. With a whisk slowly start drizzling in oil and whisk vigorously. Aim for salad dressing consistency. You may have to use more oil for taste.

Note: You want just enough dressing to lightly coat your cucumbers and red onions.

Add little dressing to the salad at a time so the salad doesn’t become excessively wet. Stir gently before serving. cv-hg.com

3 English cucumbers (seedless cucumbers) ½ cup sour cream 1 ½ teaspoon white vinegar 1 red onion, thinly sliced 1/8 bunch dill, chopped 1 ½ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper

ENTERTAINING/HY-VEE PASTA ITALIANO Serves 12 1 large container cherry tomatoes, halved 1 small container feta cheese crumbles 1 small bag sliced pepperoni, quartered 1 package prosciutto, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 package Genoa Salami, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 package Sopressata, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 package Capocolla, cut into bite-sized pieces 1 cup Parmesan cheese 1 jar capers, drained 1 red onions, diced 2 boxes bowtie pasta (Faralle) 1 bunch chopped parsley Chipotle Aioli, recipe below Fill a large stock pot ¾ full of water and bring to rapid boil. Add pasta and stir to prevent pasta from sticking to the pot bottom. Cook until pasta is al dente. Place pot in sink and run cold water into the pot and over the pasta until water and pasta are completely cooled. Remove to serving bowl. Add remaining ingredients and toss together. Dress with Chipotle Aioli (recipe below), adding in batches until pasta mixture is evenly coated. Don’t overdo. Refrigerate leftover aioli. To make Chipotle Aioli (mayonnaise): You’ll need 1 small can chipotle peppers, pureed; 1 egg; 2 egg yolks; 1 cup canola oil; juice of 1 lemon; salt and pepper, to taste. Place egg yolks and egg in bowl with lemon juice. While whisking, drizzle in canola oil and whisk vigorously. Continue adding oil until aioli reaches mayonnaise consistency. Chef’s note: You can substitute mayonnaise for chipotle aioli.

y sister once made a cake with 10 or so layers in it, named after some royal or other. It was almost like making crepes in the oven: cover the bottom of the pan with batter, bake it for five minutes, pop it out and repeat. I recall the layers having some sort of jam between them, and the whole thing was topped with a chocolate glaze. Neither of us made it again. It was impressive looking, and it was tasty enough, but the effort involved was not worth the payoff. So I forgive you for looking at this fourlayer carrot cake and thinking, "Yeah, no way that's happening." But the easy construction of this cake is one of three things I love about the recipe. Rather than baking two round layers and splitting them, the batter is poured into a half-sheet pan. (If you don't have a halfsheet pan, I can't recommend getting one more highly. They are true workhorses of the kitchen, and they're inexpensive to boot.) The broad sheet cake cooks quickly and then is simply cut into quarters, which are stacked. It's a technique that's worth keeping in mind for other projects. My next favorite feature is the frosting. Buttermilk powder gives the standard cream cheese mixture an extra helping of tang and added stability. And the cream cheese is supposed to be cold — a rarity for that ingredient, and one that's appreciated when you have trouble remembering to soften things ahead of time. Anyone who's ever decorated a cake knows the sides are the absolute worst. Good luck trying to get through Crumb Central Station without flecks of cake ending up in your frosting. Delightfully, the pecans that are standard fare in a carrot cake are left out of the batter and instead pressed onto the sides of the cake. Any crumbs are hidden by the nuts — as are uneven layers, though if you're confident, a naked-style cake can be quite attractive. The last part of the recipe I enjoy is the carrots. Obvious, I know — who's ever heard of a carrot cake with no carrots? — but important nonetheless. Carrot cake cannot come from a box. While the crumb might be close, those nasty orange nubbins, be they dehydrated bits or some awful lab creation, do not approximate the taste or texture of the fine shreds of vegetable necessary for a truly great dessert.

Transfer cooled cake to cutting board, parchment side down. Using sharp chef’s knife, cut cake and parchment in half crosswise and then lengthwise to make 4 equal rectangles, about 6 by 8 inches each. Place 6-by-8-inch cardboard rectangle on cake turntable or plate. Place 1 cake rectangle, parchment side up, on cardboard and carefully remove parchment. Using offset spatula, spread 2/3 cup frosting evenly over cake layer. Repeat with two more layers of cake, frosting each layer with 2/3 cup frosting and pressing gently on each layer to level. Place last rectangle of cake on top and frost top of cake with 1 cup frosting. Use remaining frosting to coat sides of cake. Hold cake with one hand and gently press chopped pecans onto sides with other hand. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving. Chef's notes: Shred the carrots on the large holes of a box grater or in a food processor fitted with the shredding disk. Toast the nuts in your half-sheet pan for 5 to 10 minutes, until fragrant, before or after the cake is baked.  Source: America's Test Kitchen

he yearned for a private place to get away from the daily grind. A hideout of her own where she could read, relax and daydream. After years of traveling to Guatemala for mission work, she was inspired by that country’s small houses. Last year, her husband surprised her with the announcement that he would build a casita in their backyard. “I called it a she-shed, but what I envisioned was actually very different from a typical garden house,” she says. “I wanted a multi-functional space, a lot of storage, a place to stretch out, and my biggest wish was for a blue door.” Her husband and a builder friend constructed a scale model from cereal boxes, and the project was a

year in planning before they got started on the 8- by 12foot building. Carving out space in a shady spot in the backyard, they set to work. They found new uses for typical building materials, such as using foundation coating over 1 inch of insulation to create a stucco effect on the exterior and installing a metal roof that mimics clay tile. The hand-framed casita is structurally sound and sturdy, and well insulated beneath the interior’s knotty pine car siding and laminate floor. A pair of windows allows natural light to flow inside and offers views of the garden, too. The space is wired for electricity, cable and WiFi. A fan circulates air and lights switch on automatically when she enters.

A seating bench lifts to reveal storage, and a loft space offers room to stretch out for a nap. Shelving above the entrance provides additional storage and an area to display the homeowner’s collection of Guatemalan objects, including santos. She used Guatemalan huipiles (blouses) to make throw pillows and gaucho pant legs became bolsters. Eventually the casita will become a playhouse for grandchildren. rnamental alliums have so many good things going for them that it’s a wonder they’re not more widely planted. But alliums are definitely on the rise. They seem to be popping up everywhere: in gardening books and magazines, on Pinterest boards, and in public and private gardens across the country. Most allium flowers have a long, leafless stalk topped with a globe-like bloom that’s made up of a cluster of individual florets. Like exclamation points, alliums stand out from other plants, adding emphasis and excitement wherever they’re grown. In recent years, alliums have been used to great effect in the naturalistic plantings of garden designers such as Piet Oudolf and James van Sweden. They are ideal companions for ornamental grasses and other low maintenance perennials such as sedum, rudbeckia, echincacea and salvia. Deer are another reason alliums are increasingly popular. Some gardeners fight a daily battle with roving bands of deer that will munch on anything green. Alliums are on the short list of plants deer tend to avoid. In the garden, the plants are odorless, but step on them or chew on them and the cell walls break, releasing volatile, sulfurbased chemical compounds that have a pungent odor and bitter taste.

WHAT'S NEW

catch cabin fever

A luscious new book of photos called "Cabin Porn" isn't inviting readers to hole up in the woods to look at naked bodies. It is inviting them to look at photos about holing up in the woods. The book is published by Little Brown, edited by Klein and aptly subtitled, "Inspiration for your quiet place somewhere."

But while cabins might be simple structures, the images in "Cabin Porn" are spectacular and compelling, even when the buildings are little more than ramshackle shelters tacked together from scavenged boards. The rustic settings are beautiful, on mountaintops and by the water's edge, in deserts and the woods. And the dwellings' designs are intriguing, from converted vehicles and silos to treehouses, pods, sheds and bungalows — along with more conventional wood-frame homes with pitched roofs.

cv-hg.com

Why cabins? Simplicity and immersion in nature explain much of the appeal.
