white is red hot
I
t’s cool, it’s in, it’s hip and it’s red-hot. On the color spectrum, white reflects light and is present in all colors. It becomes a trend when two paint companies like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams choose shades of white as their “it” colors for 2016, “Simply White” and “Alabaster,” respectively. What makes white so suddenly special? Well, the color can make a room appear bigger and cleaner and gives spaces more continuity. It gives furnishings and artwork a gallery-like backdrop. How much more neutral can you get? Once you’ve chosen your white, make it look intentional with layers of texture, interest and dimension. That’s what gives a white palette its impact. Your main — big — pieces of furniture should be lighter, too, so your eye can focus on the bolder pieces. Make sure your rug pattern has some white in it, so that it ties into the white walls. Of course, white goes with everything, so it’s the perfect backdrop for changing out colorful accessories with the seasons. Use organic elements and texture to bring life into the room — you don’t want it to appear stark and uncomfortable. Have one standout element in the room — big, bold art or a grouping of smaller art. Keep the frames all one color for a strong statement, and throw in a mirror for an eye-catching, reflective touch. A word of caution: White can look shadowy and dull if the lighting is wrong. TOP RIGHT White walls are used to great effect in a living room by HGTV’s Chip and Joanna Gaines. At RIGHT horizontal black and white stripes have graphic impact.

5 insider tips
for upping your design game
As you study vignettes on your bookmarked design blogs, flip through pages of shelter magazines and binge-watch HGTV shows, it's hard not to imagine certain design details transforming your own home.
We asked some of the country’s top designers to ideas they are incorporating into their own work right now, as well as those that have stood the test of time.

Choose a big mirror for big impact Summer 2016

"Whenever presented with a narrow, unadorned space or merely a blank wall, remember that a large mirror acts like adding a window to a room. This simple trick works because the reflection gives the perception of another space beyond, and as you move around, so does the view." Patrick Sutton, Baltimore

Design professionals have a lot of tricks that can enliven rooms, whether it's to make the most of a small space or add a dimension to a larger one. You can choose to break the rules or honor them. But everyone needs a little inspiration.

Look to your travels for texture
"Begin by curating what you have. Think hand-woven elements, thick textiles, objects that have patina and mix in with beautiful, neutral upholstery and furniture. A well-designed room is one that is layered and feels assembled over time." Nate Berkus, New York
03
Think beyond recessed lights "One of my go-to design techniques that I find adds a timeless touch to modern interiors is the use of flush-mounted lighting and wall-mounted sconces in lieu of a sea of recessed ceiling lights, which can often feel impersonal." Thom Filicia, New York

"One of my favorite ways to combine wallpaper and passemanterie is to paper the often-ignored ceiling and finish it with a tape trim, which adds such a surprising and luxurious detail. Depending on the paper and trim that you use, it can be an affordable and easy way to dress up your ceiling or walls." Michael Hampton, Washington

resh, funky and romantic – florals have made a comeback. Many designers suggest choosing eyepopping, large flowers for a modern look for fabrics and wallcoverings. Spruce up a sofa with a handful of toss pillows in a favorite pattern. Reupholster chairs in a larger-than-life floral pattern. Applique blooms onto the front of a chest of drawers or bombé chest. Floral patterns can work especially well on sleek, modern pieces of furniture. Rather than choosing a floral sofa that is rounded and tufted, use floral upholstery on a sofa with straight, clean lines. And rather than hanging floral draperies in a bedroom or choosing a floral bedspread, use solidcolored fabrics in those locations, then upholster the headboard in a bold, oversize floral. Mix florals with other prints or look for patterns that are more botanical than floral. Forget stuffy mustard yellows and burgundys. Look for unexpected palettes such as black and violet, springy greens and punchy pinks. Floral patterns done in just two colors — or two shades of the same color — can look more contemporary than florals that include several colors.

s there anything more stylish than living in a loft? It's a chic little word, conjuring images of brick walls, sleek concrete floors and expensive views. If you've seen a romantic comedy in the past 10 years, the dreamboat always lives in a loft. The urban industrial look — exposed pipes, concrete floors, steel finishes, an artful blend of old and new furnishings — is something many homeowners drool over. You can achieve the look without living in a big city – or a loft. Of course, the trick is to make it all feel cozy. » Layering is key.
Source: Washington Post
» Super high ceiling? Ignore it. Bring it down to human scale by lowering light fixtures and hanging art at the same height you would in a room with a nine-foot ceiling.
» Paint depends on lighting. Most people’s instincts tell them to go gray in creating the setting, but gray requires tons of light to look moody and elegant. Consider instead a silvery white or cream, such as Sherwin-Williams’ “Misty.” » Experiment with the industrial look with a statement lamp or a group of two or three simple matching chandeliers above the dining room table. » Pepper in playful accessories with nods to nature. » Weave in personal accents such as family photos, a colorful fleece day bed for the family dog, throw pillows in interesting patterns, styles and colors, area rugs that create conversation groupings … you ge the idea!

abled interior designer Barry Dixon lives and works at Elway Hall, his 1907 Edwardian estate in Warrenton, Va. The house has beautifully appointed sitting rooms and bedrooms and 17 fireplaces with lots of mantel space. Dixon is famous for moving around his treasure trove of accessories: Overscaled apothecary jars, Venetian brocade pillows, flea market candlesticks, lusterware porcelain and French garden orbs. He’s also a fan of mixing high and low. Designers, as we know from Instagram, like to use their own homes as design labs. Dixon, who opened his own decorating firm 20 years ago, layers objects that reflect both his Southern heritage and his global travels. These all influence his own line of paints for C2, fabrics and trims for Vervain, lamps and other pieces with Arteriors, and a furniture collection at Tomlinson/ Erwin-Lambeth.
A nine-inch wood and resin sphere is made from solid teak, then a crackly clear resin is used to fill out the natural burls in the wood, creating a perfect sphere. "I like them because each one will be unique," Dixon said,
Inspired by a 1960s design, this small-scale arc floor lamp with an antique brass finish was something Dixon could see next to a sofa or a reading chair, or even by a bed.

purple rain
ustic-tech chic is trendy, particularly with millennials who like the yin and yang approach to home decorating. Millennials love natural materials such as wood and stone but are also drawn to colored lights that can turn a shower into purple rain. Smart-home technology is revered, but so are artisanal items that can add a curated look to their homes. Barn doors seem to crop up more and more often in new or remodeled homes, sometimes as sliding doors to define spaces but allowing them to be entirely open and other times in smaller iterations such as a closet or pantry door.
Colored LED lights are whimsical in the shower.
trends to watch for:
• Farmhouse sinks with mix-and-match faucet handles. • Recycled wood turned into peel-and-stick natural wood siding from Stikwood. • Colored LED lights in gas fireplaces, kitchens, even bathrooms controlled with an app – so you can take a purple shower at a whim. High-end toilets are being designed with a built-in night light that illuminates the water in the bowl. • Pops of color are turning up in the kitchen, too, with small household appliances and pots and pans manufactured in a wide range of colors.
Reclaimed wood is a popular design element (Stikwood).
• Larger kitchen appliances in bright colors and pastels are available from manufacturers, but they are much costlier than appliances with standard finishes. • Multidimensional tiles with a pyramid-type shape or with a wave pattern for visual interest. Some tiles are very large and can be seamlessly installed to look like one monolithic floor.
Dedicated storage space organizes kitchen tools.
• Stainless-steel appliances with a matte finish or slightly darker tone to make them easier to keep clean and free of fingerprints. • Cupboards that lower down to the counter with the push of a button. Automated shelving and stacked drawers that slide back to reveal a second layer are particularly appealing.

a ladder here's what you'll need:
- Medium-grit sandpaper - Interior paint in your color of choice (optional) - Paintbrush (optional) - Wood glue - Four ¾-inch copper tube caps - Six ¾-inch copper tee fittings - 7/8-inch-thick wooden dowels cut to the following lengths: two at 24 inches, three at 16 inches and six at 12 inches
Step 1: Sand down the last inch or so of both ends of all your dowel pieces, enough so they will fit snugly into the copper fittings. Step 2: If you'd like to add a pop of color, paint four inches on both ends of your 12-inch dowels in a color of your choice. I eyeballed this, but you could use painter's tape and a ruler for more precise results. Allow it to dry. Mine was dry enough in 15 minutes.
Step 3: Apply a thin layer of wood glue to one end of your 12-inch dowels.

tall ladder used to display things — sometimes called a blanket ladder — makes use of empty space above eye level and draws attention up from the cramped floor. It's considerably less bulky than a bookshelf and can be moved on a whim. This project takes less than an hour (and that includes time to let paint dry!), and all the supplies can be purchased for less than $50 during a single trip
to your local hardware store. And before you go out and buy a saw to cut the wooden dowels, which typically come in lengths of 48 inches: Big-box stores such as Home Depot and Lowe's Home Improvement have cutting stations where you can borrow their tools at no cost. Follow these steps to make a five-foot-tall storage ladder on your own and create your own styling options: Think magazines, blankets, jewelry.
Step 5: Apply glue to another 12-inch dowel, and slide it into the opposing end of the tee. We are building the vertical rails, so the following two steps are all about gaining height.
Source: Washington Post
Step 4: Slip on a tee fitting using one of the holes along the top part of the "T."
elements
Step 6: Repeat this process until you have three 12-inch dowels connected to three tees. Add one 24inch dowel to the bottom tee hole, again using wood glue.
Step 7: Apply wood glue to the exposed ends of the top and bottom dowels, and slip on a copper cap. Step 8: Repeat Steps 3 through 7 so you have a second, identical vertical rail.
Step 9: Now, for the rungs: Apply glue to the end of a 16-inch dowel. Slide it into the remaining hole of your tee on the left rail. Repeat this two more times, and then use wood glue to secure the three rungs in the other side of your rail.

color palette, but fresh new colors are adding pizzazz. Vivid citrus tones such as citron green remain strong, and celadon and mint green are emerging.. Pantone’s two colors of the year — rose quartz and serenity — also are being used as accents for outdoor products, since they work well with neutrals. Consumers creating an indoor look in their backyard room can even choose seating covered in faux leather that looks just like leather yet will hold up outdoors. Convenience also is in the spotlight this spring with a focus on cushions and seating that dry quickly, eliminating the need to take cushions inside during rain showers.

anks of floor-to-ceiling windows along the entire rear length of the house offer treeframed views of the Cedar River. It’s not a stretch to imagine the homeowners settling into comfortable chairs to enjoy the vista and losing all track of time. No matter the season, or the weather, every seat is the best seat in the house. It was this setting that the couple fell in love with, not the 1958 ranch-style house itself. It took two years to remodel, but the results were well worth camping out in the lower level. Dietz Construction was the builder, and the designer was Linda Austin, owner of Austin’s Interior & Design in Waverly. “We knocked out the back side of the house and bumped out the great room by five feet. The old screen porch was removed and the space enlarged by 3 to 4 feet for a new four-season porch. The ceiling was raised to open it up and bring in light,” says Austin, who developed the drawings and floor plans. She helped the couple visualize their new space and designed the interiors to reflect the homeowners’ personal style. “It was certainly an adventure for us. What was important to me
is that Linda got me. She knew the look I was going for, and that helps a lot. The results make me very happy,” the homeowner says. Her style is eclectic — artfully blending old with new. “It’s a mix of flea market pieces with fine antiques and original art. I like a room that looks like it has evolved. We were able to mix in all the things we’ve collected over the years, and only surrounded ourselves with the things we truly love.” White-washed French white oak flooring runs like a river through the main level until it laps against the broad, deep charcoal Italian porcelain heated tiles in the porch. Furnishings, including several new chairs and a reupholstered sofa, are thoughtfully placed for both comfort and traffic flow. The soothing, organic color palette of linen white and shades of gray continues in the kitchen. “Princess” white quartzite with a live edge is striking atop the center island. “We found the slab, and it had these marvelous swirls at the end. We wanted to save that, and Linda suggested the edge, which was a wonderful idea. It’s so striking,” the homeowner explains.

Austin agrees. “The quartzite is a piece of art — nature’s artwork.” At the opposite end is a dropped work space clad in soapstone. “I’m short, so it’s handy for me, and it eliminates the railroad car-effect of a long island in a narrow space,” she says.“ Oiled soapstone countertops and sink are a visual contrast to light pewter cabinets, with the result of visually enlarging the space. Storage is maximized by taking cabinets to the ceiling. Austin rearranged placement of appliances, as well, including recessing the stove for continuity and a built-in look. “So many creative ideas were used throughout the remodel, and Linda worked out every function that we needed in the spaces. “ H&G

esigned with a young family in mind, this casually elegant residence hits a grand-slam home run for comfort, style and setting. The owners, a professional baseball player and his wife, worked closely with interior designer Andrea Kouts of The Mansion in Iowa City. From the wind-up — earliest planning stages — to the pitch — a turnkey home, Kouts helped the couple swing for the fence. The 6,300-square-foot home, built by Klosterman Construction, is tucked into a private retreat with great views. Kouts’ involvement began with helping the couple find potential lots and a builder. Her design expertise also guided them through the myriad of choices and decisions that had to be made along the way. “Homeowners can’t always visualize the size of a room from a blueprint, and how much furniture it will fit, for example,” she explains. Dark molasses-stained hardwood floors blend together the family room and kitchen. White floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, incorporating both fireplace and TV, makes a substantial statement in the living space. The subtly patterned custom rug by Davis & Davis anchors the chenille-upholstered sofas from Hickory Chair, while matching Ikat-clad Stanford wing chairs are cozy but stylish. Vivid and bright floral throw pillows bring in
welcome pops of color. “We also chose to do a huge ottoman rather than a cocktail table. You don’t have to worry about sharp edges with kids around, and you can put a big tray on it and it serves as a cocktail table,” Kouts says. Throughout the main level, a quietly sophisticated and soothing blue-green color palette plays off warm neutral walls and crisp white trim. “It’s a timeless color palette,” the interior designer notes “The blue-green seems so natural. The shades of blue and green may change, but are easily adapted using different accessories. It’s a pretty, classic look, not at all trendy.” The home’s overall sense of calm elegance comes from the homeowner’s choice of dining room furnishings. Clustered around the handsome dining room table, upholstered Baker side chairs are detailed with nailhead trim and ring pulls, and wing-backed host chairs from Lee strike a welcoming note. Underfoot is a delicately colored Safavieh rug with an almost archival appeal, and at the windows hang Kravet draperies in a contemporary motif. The mirrored three-door sideboard with weathered finish is from Modern History, and the chandelier, like most of the home’s lighting, brings in a little bling. The kitchen boasts two large islands, providing plenty of elbow room for meal

preparation and staging, as well as a place for the couple’s two boys to call a time out for a meal or snack. Caesarstone quartz countertops are practical and low-maintenance, and upkeep is equally easy for the faux leather kitchen stools. “We paid attention to the durability of fabrics and other material without sacrificing looks. The kitchen is well-put together. She doesn’t like a lot of clutter on display. So we created a really neat pantry where she keeps small appliances like toasters and coffeemaker. She also can access it from the garage to bring groceries directly into the pantry,” Kouts explains. The home continues to evolve, she adds. “The most special thing has been working with the couple from the beginning and getting to know them. People can get a whole plan, and we love that, but you can phase it in. Sometimes it’s important to live in a space before making decisions,” she adds. H&G

It’s just such a happy place to be,” says the homeowner. The kitchen had been drab, dark and dreary. “There was dark print wallpaper on the ceiling,” she recalls. “I wanted white, bright and light. I originally wanted tile on the floor, but my husband wanted hardwood. We also wanted to respect the era of the house, which was built in 1948.” So they enlisted designer Jennifer Ferson of Ferson Kitchen and Bath Design in Cedar Falls, to guide the remodeling project. “We started by gutting the kitchen and basically starting over, rearranging
the traffic flow and coming up with a design that was traditional with those modern touches to give them the look they wanted and be beautiful and very functional,” Ferson explains. Ferson worked with Senad Dizdarevic of Dizdarevic Construction in Waterloo. For the floor, the homeowners settled on Brazilian koa wood, often called tigerwood for its distinctive light and dark striping and orange color. Overhead, recessed lighting is a necessity. Dura Supreme cabinetry in a pearlescent finish and flat-paneled doors and drawers are installed on the perimeter. Several mullion accent doors have smoky mirrored glass for texture. Elegant Glazzio Versailles white tulip Arabesque tiles form the backsplash. The Wolf induction cooktop, which heats by magnetic induction, is topped by a graceful arch. Furniture detailing gives the island an air of substance, and an overhang provides space to tuck comfortable upholstered barstools for kids’ casual meals and a place for guests to perch. Above the
island a pair of elegant pendant lights by Frederick Ramond offers the bling of tapered square crystal accents. A pair of cozy but contemporary tub chairs provide in-kitchen seating complete with a wall-mounted television and gas fireplace. The most complicated aspect of the remodeling was finding the black-veined white marble countertop. “I wanted marble, but people in the Midwest are afraid to use it. You have to be able to accept the natural tones and imperfections,” the homeowner says. A 15-year sealant was applied to protect the surface from spills and stains. “What’s wonderful about this kitchen, besides the high functionality, quality materials and craftsmanship, is the versatility of the color scheme. You can add pops of any color you like because nothing clashes with it,” Ferson adds. H&G

appiness starts here.” The heartfelt sign hangs near the basement stairs in this cheerful and imaginatively decorated ranch-style farmhouse. And downstairs is the roomy workspace where most of the homeowner’s DIY projects take shape. “Several years ago, I started a DIY list of things I wanted to do, and now I’m getting to the end of the list. I’m really the queen of Pinterest, except I only pin what I really love,” says the homeowner and mother of two young children. You’ll find her projects displayed throughout the home. In the master bedroom, for example, she upcycled a used wood pallet into a headboard by sanding the wood, securing it to the wall and using a transfer to print the word “forever.” Then she turned a piece of leftover wood into a jewelry wall hanger for her necklaces. In the downstairs family room, she painted another used pallet in soft colors for the wall behind the sectional sofa. “I’m third-generation farmer, and my husband is sixth-generation. I love the farmhouse look, but the colors are sometimes too neutral for me. I’m an artist, so I’m not afraid of color,” she says, confessing a love for chalk paint. She’s also a graphic artist and former copy editor, so words and letters figure prominently into her decorating, as does the color teal —

“and birds … you’ll see lots of little birds here and there.” After painting a salvaged storage cabinet, she created colorful animal appliques for matching storage bins that flank the cabinet, and turned an old potting bench into a place to display some of her collection of family keepsakes and dairy-related memorabilia. She also enjoys making tiny furniture and accessories from found objects for her daughter’s dollhouse. An avowed DIYer, she has worked on both of the home’s renovations, the latest a major reno in 2014 that added square footage and included relocating the basement stairs from the kitchen to the addition. “We needed more space with having two kids. Our family lives in close proximity, so we frequently share meals with the nieces and nephews,” she says. “Having a big kitchen and an island is useful space.” Her father-in-law acted as the general contractor, while she supplied some of the labor. She also installed a luxury vinyl plank floor throughout the kitchen and the basement. “This is a working dairy farm, so everything has to be durable, forgiving and easy to clean. We laid the floor out ourselves, and it was my job to make sure the planks flowed right.” One of her biggest — and most Pinterestworthy projects — was decoratively painting cv-hg.com

the basement stairs. Using an idea found on Pinterest, beadboard was cut to size and installed on each riser, and the treads were painted in duck egg blue. “But it looked so boring. I decided I had to do something different.” So she grabbed the chalk paint and started over, building on the original idea. Now the treads are painted soft white with blue stripes on either side of blocks of espresso, and crisp numbers are attached to each tread. “It’s a statement piece in the basement — and turned out to be a fun way to teach the kids how to count,” she adds. LGC Homes builder Kyle Larson and his wife, Lori, decided to add a second story to their existing home. CVHG is following along with the project, and this is the latest installment.

The exterior metamorphis is nearly complete. What used to be a one-story, modern home is now a two-story dwelling — still contemporary in architecture, but with a revised entrance and a warmer feel. Larson has clad the exterior with decorative veneer Texas limestone and James Hardie Artisan Premier Lap Siding. “I was looking for something gray and fairly organic, and I couldn’t find anything. tones. I stumbled across this limestone option — an exciting find,” says Larson. The James Hardie clap siding is through ProBuild in Waterloo. What makes this series so special, Larson says, is that the siding creates deep shadow lines, and its corners can be mitered “like old-school cedar. That’s a unique feature. It’s twice the thickness, too, so the shadow lines are much more dramatic,” he explains. What’s also appealing is that visually, it has strong horizontal impact, which appeals to Larson’s passion for modern architecture. The material is primed and will soon be painted. At the same time, work is moving forward on the front door area. Outer framework is already in place for the pergola-covered front entry, replacing original heavy columns. “It’s about pushing the limits structurally. Leaving the two

piers in the ground and creating a cantilevered pergola breaks the entry into spaces, gradually leading you to the front door,” he explains. Inside, finish carpentry and painting is well under way. In addition to the new second story, the main level underwent some alterations, too. “We’ve been narrowing down some of these plaguing details that got pushed to the back burner, what with adding the story and figuring out how the space was going to be configured. Now we’re finally having to face those finishing details.” He admit some level of surprise that he’s become “desensitized” to the new scale and design, which is a far cry from the original, 2,300-squarefoot home built in 2008. With three young children, the Larsons felt the home no longer functioned properly to fit their needs. So instead of building or buying a new home, they chose to build up. “As far as the scale of the project, I get a satisfying glimpse from people who come over and see it. The rest of the time, I’m approaching the "we’re getting done’ phase". We’re over the trauma of cutting up and changing everything in the house from structure to mechanicals, wiring … that’s receding in our memories as all those visible signs of that process are getting covered up and painted over. “Each step brings us closer to completion,” he says, predicting — or hoping — that the big finish line is just a few months in the offing. entertaining/Hy-Vee Isn’t it time for an epic cookout? Whether you’re a novice or an expert, these recipes from Chef Jim Nadeau at College Square Hy-Vee are sure to get you all fired up. His lengthy resume includes memberships in the National Barbecue Association and Kansas City Barbeque Society. So read on for some his favorite marinades, brines and rubs, and add these recipes for baby back ribs, chicken breasts and sausage to your repertoire.
Smoked Baby Back Ribs
2 2-2 1/2 pound racks baby back pork ribs 1 cup of Dry Pork and Chicken Rub, recipe below Trim the membrane sheath from the back of each rack. Run a small, sharp knife between the membrane and each rib, and snip off the membrane as much as possible. Sprinkle as much of the rub onto both sides of the ribs as desired. To prevent the ribs from becoming too dark and spicy, do not thoroughly rub the spices into the ribs. Store the unused portion of the spice mix for future use. Place the ribs in a preheated smoker at 240 F, loaded with hickory wood and smoke for 2 ½ -3 hours or until ribs are tender. Remove from smoker; they are ready to eat or hold hot for later service.
Pork and Chicken Dry Rub ½ teaspoon celery salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon ground white pepper 1 teaspoon cayenne 1 teaspoon lemon pepper ½ teaspoon ground thyme 1 teaspoon dried parsley 1 teaspoon chili powder 3 teaspoons paprika
½ teaspoon onion powder ½ teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon white sugar 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon Country Time Lemonade 1 teaspoon salt Combine all ingredients into a jar. Close the lid; shake to mix

Serve this perfect summer dessert with ice cream more juice, and whoops, the peach is on the floor again with a resounding splat.
The hate part is a bit more complicated. There are two or three kinds of peaches, depending on who you ask: freestone, clingstone and an inbetween variety called semi-cling or semi-free.
Now your knife, your cutting board, your hands, your counter and your floor are sticky, and you've only got four more peaches to go!
The names give away the main distinction. Freestone peaches will have a pit that is easy to remove, or which will fall out on its own. Clingstone are the polar opposite; you'll need the Jaws of Life to separate the juicy flesh from the stubborn pit. Semi-cling fall somewhere in the middle, though some growers claim there's little difference between those and the cling types they harvest. If you're fortunate enough that it's never happened to you, let me describe the battle between a baker and an overripe clingstone peach. You make a cut around the circumference of the peeled fruit and pick it up. Your hands are slippery, of course, from the juices, so try not to drop it. Whoops. Pick it up, rinse it off, soldier onward. You grasp the two halves in your hands, ready to prise them apart, but the flesh is so soft that your fingers sink deep into the peach as you scrabble for enough friction and leverage to be able to pull and twist. As the cells collapse, they release even
That one's beyond saving, so toss it, and try the next one. You manage to hold on to this one, but you're just mashing it in your fists as you yank on it. Try cutting out several small notches, then carve the pit out.
How can you avoid this horror? Well, the obvious answer is to use your peaches before they get too ripe. Even a squishy freestone will not be a joy to slice into wedges and might leave you with a soggy crisp. (If your fruit is especially juicy, consider upping the flour or the baking time to absorb or drive off more moisture.) But clingstones are a pain even when the fruit is firm. Cling types are typically harvested earlier in the season, May to June, with the freestone varieties following. Unfortunately, that's not a guarantee, and you can't tell the difference just by looking. Your grocer is unlikely to know which is which, at least in my experience, though you should have better luck at a farmers market. Either way, once you've rolled the dice and brought home a few pounds of peaches, turn them into this crisp. If I recall correctly, this recipe came from one of my aunts via a peach orchard she worked at one summer in Missouri. While I've never had the pleasure of making it with fruit straight from the tree, it's a perfect summer dessert when topped with some vanilla ice cream.
Peach Crisp
For the filling: 5 cups sliced and peeled peaches (5-6 regular-size fruit) 1 cup sugar 1 tablespoon flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt For the topping: 6 tablespoons butter 3/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup quick oats 3/4 cup flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 350 F. For the filling, mix the sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt in a large bowl. Add the peaches, tossing until evenly coated with the sugar mixture. Pour into 13-by-9-inch baking dish. For the topping, mix the sugar, oats, flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Cut the butter into the oat mixture until only pea-sized chunks of butter remain. Sprinkle evenly over filling in pan. Bake for 30 minutes until peaches are tender and bubbling. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or other toppings as desired. Chef's notes: I slice my peaches into 16, approximately, but you can do what you like depending on how big you like your chunks. You may need to adjust the cooking time accordingly. I also usually mix the filling right in the pan — one less bowl to clean! If your peeler is sharp enough, you don't need to bother with blanching the peaches to remove the skin; if not, I suggest investing in a Kuhn Rikon for like, five bucks.

I
have a love/hate relationship with peaches. The love part is pretty obvious. Peaches at the peak of the season — typically into July and August, though you'll know it when there are five different varieties of the stone fruit at the grocery — are one of the joys of summer, especially when baked into a simple crisp.

for the love of craft
Whenever another craft beer comes to the Iowa market, it’s welcome news. Odell Brewing, of Fort Collins, Colo., the 34th largest brewery in the U.S., has expanded into Iowa.
beer
90 Shilling Ale
One of my most reliable means of distinguishing good days from bad is the unexpected appearance of beer. When samples of Odell Brewing Company’s beers arrived out of the blue, looking for good homes, I volunteered to take in the 90 Shilling Ale and Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout because that is the sort of generous, giving person I am. 90 Shilling has a deep coppery hue and builds a thin yet persistent head that paints a handsome foam mustache with every sip. This is a beer best allowed to warm a bit before serving. Chill too deeply as I did, and you’ll taste mainly sweet malt, vague fruitiness and a sharp lingering bitterness. As the glass warms, more nuanced flavors-toffee, toasted nuts, light breadiness-rise up to counter the bitter resulting in a nicely balanced beer ready to pair with nearly any menu. -Brandon Pollock
India Pale Ale
Beer lovers turned off by strong-hopped bitterness may have found an IPA for them. Odell Brewing’s offering tallies just 60 on the IBU scale — a low rating for most craft IPAs on the market — and offsets any bitterness with a heavy dose pale and Vienna malts. Odell packs nine varieties of American hops into its IPA, which provides some pine and fruit notes when it hits the tongue but gives way quickly to a sticky sweet malt finish. -Tim Jamison

entertaining Myrcenary Double IPA
Have the designated driver ready if you’re planning an evening with Odell Brewing’s Imperial ale offering. Myrcenary goes down very easy for a beverage with a 9.3 alcohol by volume content. Using a blend of hops with the highest levels of myrcene, a component of essential oils in the hop flower, there’s a lot going on beneath this beer’s foam head. Pine and tropical fruit — more mango than citrus here — and even a hint of tobacco make up the modestly bitter first taste punch. There’s a light sweetness leaves quickly and a rich flavor that largely, but not entirely, masks the higher alcohol content. While Myrcenary ultimately may not be marriage material for fans of the genre, it more than provides an interesting one night stand. — Tim Jamison
Loose Leaf Session Ale
The only canned beer in Odell’s sample, Loose Leaf, a session ale is a crisp, lighter offering. A session beer is a low alcohol-by-volume beer that can be consumed without leading to excessive intoxication. Beers usually range from about 3 percent to 5 percent alcohol by volume. Loose Leaf, at 4.5 percent, fits nicely in that range.
Before
During
Light in color, it’s a beer with more of a lager flavor than hoppy pale ale flavor. It would be a refreshing addition to outdoor activity on a warm day. It does have enough hop flavor to give it some citrus crispness, but is malty enough that it likely won’t satisfy hardcore hop heads. It can be a good option for for people who prefer American lagers to begin their foray into craft beer. — John Molseed
Runoff Red IPA
The hands-down favorite of the six samples Odell extended us. Runoff Red IPA does what a red IPA should, it features a balance of malt and hops in a flavorful but refreshing beer. Bready malts with a tiny bit of faint toffee are swept away with tangy, citrus hop flavors at the end. It sits on the tongue early with the malty sweetness and leaves with a clean impression at the end. It pours with a gorgeous amber color and has just enough carbonation to tickle the tongue but not mask the subtle malt flavors it starts with. — John Molseed

he zinnia never goes out of fashion. For just a couple of bucks worth of seeds, you can sow several dozen cheerful zinnias in the summer garden. With lots of new colors, sizes and growth habits, including compact growers, this annual is versatile and easy to grow. When the Spanish first saw zinnias in Mexico, they named them mal de ojo, or "sickness of the eye," because they thought they were ugly. The NGB reports that there are dozens of species of zinnias, which belong to the Asteraceae or Compositae family. Zinnia elegans is the common zinnia most familiar to gardeners. Z. augustifolia or Z. linearis is gaining popularity because it has smaller single flowers and narrow foliage. Although the species has golden orange flowers, "Crystal White" was an All America Selections winner in 1997 and has pure white daisy-like blooms with yellow centers. The Mexican zinnia (Z. haageana) is the leastknown garden zinnia, but it is diseaseresistant with small, bicolored flowers. There are a variety of flower forms — single, semi-double or double. "Beehive" zinnias with rows of flat petals on small blooms and buttontype flowers, as well as dahlia-flowered zinnias, add even more diversity. Do several plantings of zinnias over successive weeks to extend blooms into fall. Seed zinnias in groupings rather than soldierly rows for a casual, massed look. You also can start seeds indoors four weeks before the last spring frost date. Expect germination in about 7 days. Wait until the soil warms, seedlings have two sets of true leaves and night temperatures hover at 55 F before planting outdoors. Zinnias can be found as bedding plants. Choose healthy-looking plants that are budding, not blooming. Plant in full sun. Water immediately after planting, then water regularly as needed.

One fun theme everyone is sure to love is movie night. Set out pasta salads, burgers, hot dogs, popcorn and movie candy. Scatter blankets and patio chairs on the lawn and project a movie on the garage wall or against a white backdrop.

Buy ice. Then buy more ice. The rule is at least 1 pound of ice per person per hour – more if the night is sweltering. Load up a large beverage tub with ice and keep it filled with lots of beverages. Fill a beverage dispenser with icy cold lemonade or other beverages, with a stack of unbreakable acrylic tumblers nearby. Remember to refill it frequently. For night time, fill clear buckets or containers with ice and tuck glow sticks inside for a special effect.
03
Fill a beverage dispenser. Water infused with fruit or herbs (cucumber-mint-strawberry is Fischer's current favorite) is a refreshing treat. An acrylic beverage dispenser is good for the outdoors; put a stack of unbreakable tumblers nearby. For a special treat, place frozen Popsicles inside glasses of champagne. Make a nonalcoholic option using a carbonated lemon-lime drink like Mist Twist, Sprite or 7-Up.

tring the twinkle lights, put up the tiki torches and wipe down the patio furniture. It’s summer, and time to take the party outdoors for an evening under the stars. What could be more relaxing? And it’s a darned sight easier to deck out the deck than the dining room!
Here are a few expert hacks we’ve gathered to help you pull off your next outdoor soiree with style.

something different. It could be a build-your-ownkebab station with veggies, meat and skewers, a build-your-own burger station with all the fixings, or a beverage station stocked with flavored simple syrups, iced teas, seltzers, spritzers, lemonade, craft beers. For dessert, why not a make-your-own sundae
Fill a basket or galvanized metal bucket with bug repellent (and sunscreen if it’s an afternoon gathering). Use colorful cupcake liners as lids to keep bugs from taking a dip in beverage-filled glasses. In advance, use a paper punch to make holes the in the center of the cupcake liners and poke a stripped straw through the hole. Arrange the straw-lids in a Mason jar or other holder at the beverage station.
05
Be mindful of the sun. Figure out a few weeks before where the sun hits your yard at what time and plan your party time accordingly. No one wants to be wilting in direct sunlight.
06 Add color to your outside space. Buy a few
splashy pillows or outdoor ottomans or an indoor/ outdoor rug. Hang banners, pennants, paper lanterns, paper parasols hung upside down and such to add to the festivities.

07 Set up a cooling station.
Stock a small table with fun things to help ward off the sizzling heat. You could have chilled towels, paper parasols and sunscreen — plus plenty of cold water.

Comeback of the
bar cart
For people who entertain, bar carts never left. Stand-alone, movable bars are helpful for guests because they allow them to make their own beverages, but they also help hosts delegate drinks while they manage the other details of hospitality.
02
And what about wheels? If you want to move the cart from the dining room to the living room occasionally, you might want the ability to roll. It seems that every home-furnishings retailer sells bar carts now, so there’s one to match every style.
03
The basic design should complement your collections, whether its alcohol or glasses.
04
Look beyond home furnishing retailers for creative options. Many utility carts could stand in as bar carts. 6. Small bar carts are ideal for tight spaces, but they can’t hold an entire bar’s worth of bottles and glasses .Use them instead to set out ingredients for a special cocktail, designed just for the occasion, and teach your guests a new recipe.
