It’s only a few weeks now before these friends become neighbors at Prairie Wind! Bonnie and Darlys became friends at church and look forward to being neighbors. They can’t wait for their new homes – one above the other – to be ready at Prairie Wind in June. Bonnie looks forward to spending time with people, socializing, eating meals, playing cards and going on outings. She can take Western Home Communities transportation if she doesn’t feel like moving her vehicle out of the heated underground garage. Darlys relishes the thought of no more maintenance, since Western Home Communities takes care of it. With others cooking and cleaning, too, that affords more time for shopping and other enjoyable pursuits. Many of those will be right next door in the Jorgensen Plaza for Well-Being, where residents like Darlys and Bonnie can eat at the restaurant, walk the track, take a swim, try yoga or tai-chi classes, ask computer questions, pick up a gallon of milk, relax with a massage, try a new hairstyle, worship, appreciate musical performances and learn from educational programs. Both women look forward to meeting new friends in this unique community. Why not join them?

moment in the sun Gorgeous shades of yellow have become increasingly popular in home dĂŠcor accents and whole room colors. But while yellow is having a moment, many shades of it can be challenging to use successfully. where to use it

A recent report by Zillow Digs found that homes with whitepainted kitchens sell for $1,400 less than homes with yellow kitchens. If yellow walls seem like too big a leap, use yellow for upholstery and pillows or kitchen cabinets. Yellow is catching on for entries and hallways, introducing sunshine in a space with little natural light. Use yellow in spaces you want to make look larger. A warm yellow can energize a space, while still feeling relaxing. Use yellows in accents, as well.

Choosing a shade

Yellow is one of those colors that is hard to get just right. A room that is too yellow can be overwhelming. Sometimes introducing blue or green or even a lavender shade will cool it down. If you’re a fan of citrus or primrose yellows, the look can be fashion forward and pair nicely with gray or blue shades. Interior designers say pale yellow can be a wonderful ground color for extravagantly colored prints, while buttery shades add a warm glow and make spaces feel cozy. Rooms with a lot of natural sunlight, a neutral yellow like cornsilk will offer the optimistic energy that characterizes yellow.

No shade of yellow is impossible to use, but do choose with care. If you'll be painting walls yellow, test out a shade and view it throughout the day to see how it changes in different types of natural light and with different lamps. You might have to live with a sample of a bright, lemon yellow for a few weeks to make sure it's something you want long-term. Yet going with paler yellows isn't always a safer bet. Designers say if it is too pale and the room it is in is relatively dark or gets cool, north-facing light, the color will look dingy rather than cheerful or calming. Contrast can also help — pairing with a cooler color, and not making it the only color in a room. So take time to choose shades that delight you.

sofa

Buying a sofa can be daunting. Because it’s such a big purchase, it requires a lot of research and measuring. The sofa has to fit through the doorway and into the room, the height of the seat should be about the same as others in the room, and the depth is important, too, so it won’t be in the way or cut off room traffic. It needs to fit the scale of the room itself. Beyond size, there's fabric to choose, different cushion materials, different shapes — it can all get a little overwhelming.

so here’s the skinny on shopping for the perfect sofa When you have kids or pets, it's important to choose your sofa fabric wisely. You’ll want sturdy, performance fabrics. If you have cats, pay attention to fabric weave too. Large weaves don’t play well with cat claws. No matter what you choose, get a protective treatment on the fabric. for small spaces: Look for slimmer lines that make the sofa appear to take up less space. Also, many companies have small-space sofas with English roll arm and other styles that can look less minimal or modern. for large spaces: If you have a big room to fill, by all means, go with a big sofa or sectional. Opt for high-quality fill in cushions and the promise of a long life. If you can't decide between modern and traditional, land in the middle with a transitional silhouette that looks at home with both traditional and contemporary furnishings. sofa beds: Look for comfort in a sofa bed — a regular mattress plus an inflatable top layer is great for a guest sleeper. Opt for well-made mechanicals in a sofa that looks good, too.

elements / fig & frolic The age-old art of Shibori — the Japanese dyeing technique — is easier than you think. Using our step-by-step directions for this fun project, you can create your own pillow cover designs to update that sofa or chair for summer. text by becky hiatt & jenny boevers

Tie one on!

here's what you'll need:

- Pillow form - Fabric to cut two pieces for pillow - Scissors - Annie Sloan paint - Water - Clothespins - Paper clips - Ball jar lid - Rubber bands - String - Spray bottle - Iron

Step 1: Cut fabric into two pieces (one for front and one for back of pillow). The size depends on size of your pillow form. We used Roc-lon muslin. Always make your finished pillow cover two inches smaller than the pillow form. Example: For a 20" pillow form, cut fabric into two 19" squares, allowing for a 1/2" seam allowance. Step 2: In container, mix one tablespoon of Annie Sloan paint with about 10 cups of water. Stir until paint fully dissolved. Stir often to ensure paint stays mixed well. For the pillows we created, we used Napoleonic Blue, Burgundy, Antibes Green and Graphite. Step 3: Take one piece of fabric (which will be the back of the pillow) and loosely dip into the paint and water mixture. Swish around until fabric fully immersed. Lightly wring out and hang to dry with clothespins. Step 4: Next, use folding techniques on second piece of fabric (which will be the front of the pillow). Shibori tying and folding techniques are similar to those used in tie-dying. Option 1: Fold fabric back and forth in a fan-like pattern. Then fold in half along short side. Clip clothespin around the rectangle.

12 | c v - h g . c o m

Option 2: Fold fabric in roughly 4-inch square. Place a Ball jar lid on the front and back of the folded square and secure with either clothespins or paper clips. Option 3: Fold fabric back and forth in a fan-like pattern. Fold piece in half along long side. Tightly wrap rubber bands along fabric piece using multiple bands in random fashion. Option 4: Fold fabric back and forth in a fan-like pattern. On one end of the folded piece, begin to fold fabric into a triangle and continue down the entire length of fabric. Tightly wrap rubber bands around the corners of the folded triangle. Option 5: Laying fabric flat on a table, gather the fabric by pinching from top to bottom until your thumb and finger meet in the middle. Tie tightly with string (tightness is important). Repeat 3-4 times. Try not to make the folds too even, but allow to differ in height and size. Step 5: Next, for fabric folded in any of the options 1-4 above, dip folded or tied piece of fabric into the paint/ water mix, letting it sit in the mix for just a few seconds. For option 5, lightly wet tied piece with water using a spray bottle. Using the paint full strength, light paint on the folded edges here and there. Set aside to dry. Step 6: Remove from paint/water mix and let drip. Remove strings or rubber bands with scissors. Carefully unfold fabric and hang to dry. Step 7: Once the fabric has air dried, you will want to iron each piece to ensure the color is set. Step 8: After ironing, the fabric is ready for sewing into a pillow.

Milton & King’s Camden Factory Bricks wallpaper, above, is the company’s most popular brick wallcovering (miltonandking.com). “Fixer Upper” star Joanna Gaines recently partnered with York Wallcoverings to create her own shiplapinspired wallpaper, left, (yorkwall.com).

D

ecorative architectural accents such as imitation stone countertops and hardboard panels of embossed "brick" are increasingly popular solutions in home renovations. To some, this might seem at odds with the larger design movement toward organic materials and artisan objects, but plenty of designers and DIY bloggers see nothing wrong with going faux. Many faux materials are more durable and low maintenance than the real thing. Wood-grain porcelain tiles offer the warmth of hardwood without the upkeep. Laminate countertops are more scratch- and stain-resistant. And faux wood beams are made of lightweight polyurethane, which means they're easier to install and won't crack, warp or rot. Digital printing has also nudged the wallpaper industry back into the spotlight, and there is a similar desire to replicate rustic charm. Brewster has two new collections, Reclaimed and Restored, that were inspired by vintage architectural details such as antique tiles and pressed tin ceilings. Wall panels are surging in popularity thanks in part to HGTV's Joanna Gaines, the "Fixer Upper" star who praises shiplap (wooden wall planks) for its subtle, outdoorsy warmth.

rek through home decor stores these days and you'll probably see goods from around the world — India, the Far East, South America. And Africa. Just as fashion houses like Celine, McQueen, Valentino and Missoni have referenced African prints and hues over the last few seasons, so are interior designers and retailers doing that now, drawing on Africa's wealth of crafts like woodworking, pottery, textiles and pattern-making. Jeanine Hays, creative director of the interior design firm Aphrochic in Brooklyn, New York, Designer Christina Bryant thinks that millennial consumers, who have recently entered the home market in large numbers, are driving the global home-decor trend. "They're the most avid travelers, interested in exploration beyond the U.S. and Europe. They also want authentic products with stories behind them, and they value ethical sourcing," she says. "I believe they're fueling this movement toward artisan handmade products."

Olive — no longer the pits

O

live trees, native to the Mediterranean region, are among nature's oldest trees, and they look it. Gnarled, brawny trunks, a crown full of silvery leaves, and clusters of tiny green fruit give olives an interesting Old World look. Designers have lately been warming to the tree, its wood and olive hues. The wood's distinctive characteristics — its smooth density and interesting grain pattern — have made olive furniture and accessories popular. It pairs well with other toothsome colors like chocolate, orange, raspberry, cream and mustard. "Olive tones are timeless, and green is an important color in 2017," says Sue Wadden, color marketing director for Sherwin-Williams. The company's Relentless Olive packs all the punch of a zesty martini. (www. sherwin-williams.com ) Benjamin Moore's Tate Olive, from its Historic palette, has a refined intensity. Spanish Olive dials the hue back to a more neutral position. (www.benjaminmoore.com ) Olive pairs successfully with many other woods, and with mid- and lighttoned wood stains, where its organic appeal gives the color greater depth, says Stephanie Pierce of Masterbrand Cabinets. Consider using the color in family rooms, bedrooms and kitchens for a warm and welcoming vibe. "I like seeing olive green tones used with dusty pinks and navy blue," says Wadden.

I

t was a short list but a tall order. As the proud owners of a newly built, 5,600-squarefoot home built by Swen Larson Construction in a lush wooded setting, the homeowners wanted the interiors to be a blend of formal and casual — gracious living spaces that were earthy, but polished — and don’t forget the sparkle. Interior designer Alex Von Ahsen of Phelan’s and cabinet designer Monica Boeckenstedt of 929 Design delivered in a big way. “Alex and Monica took time to learn about us and our lifestyle, and how we could best use the space. Now I feel like I’m home — and I love it. Every morning I wake up and can’t believe I live here. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over that feeling. I hope I don’t,” says the homeowner. Von Ahsen’s deft mix of sink-into furnishings and a monochromatic color scheme is inviting, and the fabrics can easily stand up to the wear-and-tear of grandchildren and the owners’ pair of goldendoodle dogs.

22 | c v - h g . c o m

“I’m a big fan of working in the warm end of the gray family, the taupe-y end of gray, and it works well with accent shades like aqua and purple. And because it’s monochromatic, playing with textures and patterns in fabrics provides contrast,” the designer explains. Oiled oak plank floors in a soft gray wash run through the public spaces, durable but unsealed. Comfortably arranged in front of the limestone fireplace, Norwalk sofas are upholstered in woven chenille, paired with chairs in faux mohair and two swivel metallic leather chairs. Twin ottomans are tucked into two coffee tables, and the entire setting is grounded on a patterned rug from Stanton. The large, shapely walnut dining table with its rough-hewn edge that seats 10 separates the living area both visually and physically from the kitchen. “I told my husband we bought a tree and had it shipped in,” she says, laughing. Her nephew carved the shape and her brother welded the base. The homeowners worked closely with Boeckenstedt in designing the kitchen with its 11-foot ceiling, including cherry cabinets with

mocha stain from Bertch, Cambria quartz countertops and subway tile backsplash. The big island comfortably seats six and an appliance suite that includes a Wolf oven (with the ever-popular pancake griddle) and Sub-Zero refrigerator with a cold drawer that lets the grandkids easily reach for juice or chocolate milk. “When a kitchen is bigger, function and flow become very important. Where you put your work zones matter because you want to be able to move easily and efficiently,” says Boeckenstedt. A window opens onto the outdoor kitchen to allow food to be easily passed through. Guests pass through the sunroom into the deck area, which features a big table with plenty of seating, a fireplace and TV. In another area of the deck, there’s seating and a table designed for more intimate dining. It’s in the master suite where Von Ahsen really let the homeowner’s love for both purple and sparkles shine. Matching Thomasville dressers with pearlized finish flank the tall, curvaceous and tufted brocade headboard. A small seating area provides a place to relax in front of the

Bertch cabinets are custom colored and topped in a mica-specked Cambria quartz stone, “Whitney.” Sparkling Brizo faucets, chrome and crystal hand pulls and porcelain tiles complete the look. “Galloway” Cambria quartz covers the coffered-ceiling bar and imparts a more masculine vibe in the lowerlevel family room. T

here’s nothing safe about choosing a predominantly white color scheme. Too much white can appear cold, almost clinical. Playing with a palette of white creates the risk of making one shade or another look vaguely gray or worse, dirty. Another mark against white? It reveals all, making it hard to ignore a messy counter top or floor that needs vacuuming. All that said, when a busy lifestyle calls out for calm when the front door closes, these homeowners simply can’t imagine anything more soothing than their elegant pale surroundings. And white is used with such a sureness of hand that it is a perfect fit for their modern, although not quite minimalist, decorating style. The couple immigrated to the United States from Poland about 30 years ago and reared their family in this house. Now empty nesters, they decided rather than relocate, “that we wanted to keep this piece of America and turn it into the home of our dreams. We’re happy where we are,” says the homeowner. The homeowners turned to Harting & Hunemuller for the renovation. “They were extremely patient, listening to us and our dreams, and the changes we wanted. It took longer than we thought, but everything is exactly

32 | c v - h g . c o m

how we wanted it. “I love white for its purity, and there’s something almost mystical about it. It emphasizes shapes and lines,” she explains. White poses no problem, even with caring for five small dogs. Pale walls also provide the perfect gallery setting for the couple’s collection of Jon Allen metal art and other artists. Renovation meant opening up the kitchen to add more square footage and better work zones, although the homeowner confesses she doesn’t cook as much as she’d like. The sleek kitchen boasts crisp white cabinetry, soft, pale gray and white porcelain (heated) tiles and a Cambria stone counter top in a warm, swirling pattern of sandy light and dark tones that continues up the backsplash for continuity. An LG appliance suite in stainless steel adds a bit of gleam and a stylish arch houses the hood above the stove. An espresso station is housed on the counter top beneath the microwave shelf, ready for a quick breakfast. The former living room is now the new formal dining featuring silver-painted, spider-back chairs surrounding a round glass-topped table. “I like the round table because it makes everyone at the table important, and everyone can see each other for better conversation,” she says.

Light floods the new living room from floor-to-ceiling windows. Soft gray walls framed by white trim and gray furnishings, including a sectional and separate seating area, make a subtle statement. It’s her husband’s favorite room, and he often sits with a cup of tea to enjoy the setting. An engineered hardwood floor in pale honeyed tones flows underfoot, and glittering silver and glass accents abound. The original fireplace was enlarged and dressed in limestone. An attached greenhouse provides space for housing orchids and large, green-filled planters for colder months. Outdoors, a multi-level deck is accented with marine blue,

and when the roses are in bloom, it’s as if the outdoors is brought inside, she says. The elegant master suite compellingly contrasts shades of white, including creamy white, against dark-trimmed furniture. In the lower level, cream leather recliners offer guests comfortable seating for TV and movie viewing, and upstairs, one guest bedroom is white with yellow accents and another bedroom is punctuated by turquoise and ocean-themed artwork. “There may be lots of white, but it actually gives us a lot of freedom, and it’s easy to clean. We love the feeling,” the homeowner adds. H&G

Sports bar hangout W

hen it’s prime time for sports, the homeowner can be found in his recently finished lower level, enjoying a brew with his pals and watching the action on four — count ’em, four — televisions. The bar has become a favorite hangout for grown-ups in the house, but looks can be deceiving. It’s also a fully functional kitchen. “My wife grew up in a house with two kitchens, and the deal was she wanted a fully functional kitchen down here for holidays and entertaining, and I’d get a space that looked like a real bar,” he says. Grabbing a roll of masking tape, he carefully taped out space for the bar. “I wanted to get an idea of how much room it would need, how much room I could have as the bartender.” Then the homeowners enlisted Magee Construction in the project to transform their taped-out vision into the real deal. “Plumbing was roughed in, so our hands were tied about where the

sink was going to go. And we wanted to make sure the aesthetics and color scheme blended with the rest of the home,” explains Magee’s Deb Waterman. They chose budget-friendly, easy-tomaintain materials including fool-theeye Wilsonart HD Brazilian laminate design, “Winter Carnival,” featuring red-browns with gray and cream accents, for the gently curved bar top and counter top and a luxury vinyl plank, “Adura” from Mannington. Cultured stone runs the length and width of the backsplash for a unified and spacious appearance. Espresso cabinets and soffits are a match to cabinetry in the home’s main level. Waterman also followed through on the homeowners’ desire for a complete second kitchen with a glass-front, commercial-grade wine cooler and fridge and other residential-grade appliances. The homeowner also installed a dual tap system for beer. “It comes pretty much ready to plug into the wall, and you need a CO2 tank, but it all goes together in about five minutes.”

Five espresso leather swivel seats ring the bar. “It was important that the bar stools looked nice, but beyond anything else, we wanted them to be flat-out comfortable, and they are,” he says. And all offer good views of three TVs hanging in the bar — their wiring concealed — and a fourth big-screen TV in the lounge area. “So, turns out, my tape job was really bad,” the homeowner says, with a laugh. “We ended up with so much more space than we imagined, and it’s a perfect match to the rest of the house.” H&G

T

he kitchen island is the hub of activity in this new, open-concept home built by Steege Construction. “An island can become a catch-all if you’re not careful, but it’s where everyone wants to hang out,” says the homeowner. Family and friends can easily circulate around the island without bothering a busy cook, and it’s ideal for setting up and serving everything from breakfasts to buffets. “We have a blended family, so when we all get together it’s a big crowd. This island is perfect for that kind of entertaining.” Amish-built custom cabinetry in knotty alder is stained in Meditteranean dark espresso, a warm contrast to the caramel tones of hickory finished engineered hardwood underfoot. “It’s very easy to keep clean and very durable. The trim work is all rustic cherry.” Laminate was a practical and low-maintenance choice for counter tops, accented by a glass-andstone backsplash. Under-cabinet lighting adds a nice after-dark glow. Traditional furnishings, including leather-clad seating and a fireplace, add to feelings of warmth and comfort that were the homeowners’ goal.

s u m m e r 2 0 1 7 | 47

Although the master bedroom is comfortable and traditional, it is far from cavernous. Instead of the requisite seating area, they lent that space to their master bathroom. A solid-surface counter top sits atop the espresso-finished custom cabinetry. The shower surround is 12- by 24- inch tiles, visually enlarging the already roomy shower, and the master closet is big enough to comfortably house a full-sized washer and dryer. The guest room is the perfect place to tuck a crib for days when the homeowner babysits grandbabies. In the lower level, the “man cave” boasts custom cabinetry, a wet bar and plenty of Chicago Bears and Cubs memorabilia. In one custom Amish-built pantry, a drawer pulls out to reveal the pizza oven, and the drawer above it keeps liquor safely out of reach. A sectional offers plenty of seating for game day. The lower level also provides plenty of storage — and there’s a doggie sink for bathing the homeowners’ Yorkies. H&G

ENTERTAINING

Pitcher-Perfect summer

50 | c v - h g . c o m

ENTERTAINING It’s no surprise that sangria is a popular hot-weather beverage. What’s more refreshing in summer than fruit and fresh flavors served chilled? And it’s perfect for entertaining, too. Remember, the longer the sangria sits, the fuller the flavor. So make it the night before and refrigerate. When you’re ready to serve, float some fresh fruit slices in the beverage, and if desired, add some club soda for a little fizz just before serving.

Grilled Stone Fruit Sangria Vegetable oil (for grill) 2 peaches, halved, pitted 2 plums, halved, pitted 1 nectarine, halved, pitted 12 cherries, 6 halved, pitted, 6 left whole for serving 1 (750ml) bottle red wine 1/2 cup orange juice 1/4 cup brandy 1/4 cup simple syrup (recipe below) Prepare a grill or grill pan for medium heat; oil grates. Grill peach, plum, and nectarine halves, flipping once, until lightly charred and tender, 8–10 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and let cool, then cut into 1-inch chunks. Muddle grilled fruit and 6 halved cherries in a large pitcher with a wooden spoon. Top with wine, orange juice, brandy, and simple syrup; stir to incorporate. Chill at least 1 hour. Fill glasses with ice. Add sangria and muddled fruit and top each with a cherry. Simple syrup: For a single recipe, use 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water (whatever the quantity, use a 1:1 ratio of sugar and water). Place the sugar in a saucepan and add water, stirring over low heat until sugar dissolves. Remove to a clean jar or other container and refrigerate. Or mix the two in a pitcher and stir until the sugar dissolves.

Peach-Berry Sangria 1/3 cup superfine sugar 1/2 cup peach nectar 1 bottle rosé 3/4 cup peach vodka 1 pint strawberries, sliced 3 peaches, sliced 3 cups club soda In a pitcher, mix sugar with peach nectar until dissolved. Stir in rosé, vodka, strawberries and peaches. Add club soda. Chill.

Sangria Blanca 10 green grapes, halved 4 fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced 1 peach, pitted and sliced 1 bottle (750 milliliters) Cava (or dry sparkling wine) 1 1/2 cups white grape juice 1/2 cup Licor 43 (found at liquor stores) 2 sprigs fresh mint Fill a large glass pitcher halfway with ice; add fruit. Tilt pitcher and pour Cava very slowly down side (to preserve bubbles). Add juice and liquor; stir gently. Stir in mint.

Rosy Peach & Ripe Melon Sangria 8 peeled, diced (1/4 inch) ripe white or golden peaches 4 cups diced (1/4 inch) ripe cantaloupe 2 cups diced (1/4 inch) ripe strawberries 2 bottles rosé or dry white wine 1/2 cup fresh grapefruit juice

1/4 cup Cointreau liqueur 4 cups sparkling water 16 mint sprigs, for garnish Place all the fruit in a large pitcher. Pour in wine, juice and Cointreau. Let rest at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours to blend flavors. Before serving, add the sparkling water. Serve in wine glasses over ice and garnish with mint.

Green Apple Sangria 2 green apples (such as Granny Smith), cored, cut into 3/4" pieces Zest of 1 orange, removed in long strips with a vegetable peeler 3/4 cup fresh orange juice 2 cinnamon sticks 3/4 cup brandy 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 1/3 cup sugar 1/4 cup Cointreau or other orange liqueur 1 750-milliliter bottle Spanish red wine 1 cup (about) club soda Orange slices Stir apples, orange zest and juice, cinnamon, brandy, lemon juice, sugar, and Cointreau in a large pitcher to combine. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour. DO AHEAD: Sangria base can be made 1 day ahead. Cover; chill. Add wine to sangria base and stir to combine. Pour sangria over ice, top off with club soda, and garnish with orange slices. Recipes from epicurious.com

I

have a chocolate drawer in my house. I’m either living very right or very wrong, though I like to think it’s the former. All those bags and boxes of chocolate now have a good home – and there are many, between unsweetened, bittersweet, semisweet, milk, white, mini chips and butterscotch, especially given my habit to pick up a bag or two of the Hershey’s Special Dark just in case. (I recently had six unopened and one partial, but I think I’m down to three after a conscious effort.) Everything now fits snugly in a shallow drawer, each kind instantly visible and accessible at a moment’s notice. It’s far better than my previous storage solution, which involved piling the shifting bags in tall stacks on a fairly high shelf. But making your kitchen easier to work in pays off handsomely in the long run. Put the hot pads where you can get to them, if you want to make this Chocolate Cream Pie, as the Oreo crust will need to be pulled from the oven before it overbakes. The silky pastry cream filling uses two kinds of chocolate — which I can find easily now in my drawer! — and is topped with a very large pile of fluffy whipped cream.

alan simmer / on cooking Whipped Cream Topping 1 1/2 cups heavy cream (cold) 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1. For the crust: Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 350 F. In bowl of food processor fitted with steel blade, process cookies with 15 one-second pulses, then let machine run until crumbs are uniformly fine, about 15 seconds. (Alternatively, place cookies in large zipperlock plastic bag and crush with rolling pin.) Transfer crumbs to 9-inch pie plate, drizzle with butter, and use fingers to combine until butter is evenly distributed. 2. Press crumbs evenly onto bottom and up sides of pie plate. Refrigerate 20 minutes to firm crumbs, then bake until crumbs are fragrant and set, about 10 minutes. Cool on wire rack while preparing filling.

3. For the filling: Bring half-and-half, salt and about 3 tablespoons sugar to simmer in medium saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally with wooden spoon to dissolve sugar. Whisk yolks thoroughly in medium bowl until slightly thickened, about 30 seconds. Stir together remaining sugar and cornstarch in small bowl, then sprinkle over yolks and whisk, scraping down sides of bowl, if necessary, until mixture is glossy and sugar has begun to dissolve, about 1 minute. When half-and-half reaches full simmer, drizzle about 1/2 cup hot half-and-half over yolks, whisking constantly to temper; then whisk egg yolk mixture into simmering halfand-half (mixture should thicken in about 30 seconds). Return to simmer, whisking constantly, until 3 or 4 bubbles burst on the surface and mixture is thickened and glossy, about 15 seconds longer.

4. Off heat, whisk in butter until incorporated; add chocolates and whisk until melted, scraping pan bottom with rubber spatula. Stir in vanilla, then immediately pour filling into baked and cooled crust. Press plastic wrap directly on surface of filling and refrigerate pie until filling is cold and firm, about 3 hours. 5. For the topping: Just before serving, beat cream, sugar and vanilla in bowl of standing mixer on low speed until small bubbles form, about 30 seconds. Increase speed to medium; continue beating until beaters leave a trail, about 30 seconds more. Increase speed to high; continue beating until cream is smooth, thick, and nearly doubled in volume and forms soft peaks, about 20 seconds. Spread or pipe whipped cream over chilled pie filling. Chef’s notes: Do not combine the yolks and sugar in advance of making the filling; the sugar will begin to denature the yolks, and the finished cream will be pitted.

Summer dog sense H

ot weather can pose risks for dogs, says the American Kennel Club. Keep your pets healthy by taking some sensible precautions. ▶ If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child's wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in. ▶ Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 F in a matter of minutes. ▶ Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. ▶ Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun's heat is less intense. ▶ Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog's paws. ▶ Dogs that are brachycephalic (short-faced), such as bulldogs, boxers, Japanese chins, and Pekingese, have an especially hard time in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently

60 | c v - h g . c o m

as longer-faced dogs. Keep these dogs inside with air-conditioning. ▶ Make sure your dog's vaccinations are up to date, especially since dogs tend to stay outdoors longer and come into contact with other animals more during the summer months. ▶ Keep dogs off of lawns that have been chemically treated or fertilized for 24 hours (or according to package instructions), and away from potentially toxic plants and flowers. ▶ Keep your dog well-brushed and clean. ▶ Fleas and ticks, and the mosquitos which carry heartworm disease, are more prevalent in warmer months. Ask your veterinarian for an effective preventive to keep these parasites off your dog. Suzy Schares, owner of Pet Supplies Plus, suggests treating pets year-round, but particularly during warm weather, either with flea-and-tick collars, topical applications or oral pills, depending on health issues and vet suggestions. Cats also need protection, but make sure dog products are kept out of reach of curious cats. “If there is an infestation, we carry

products that treat infestations in both the home and yard. People may treat their home and forget the yard,” she says. ▶ Traveling? Invest in a seat belt, harness or carrier to ensure your pet’s safety. If you’re vacationing near water, purchase a life vest for your pet. Many dogs are afraid of the water, and even if they love it, swimming is strenuous and tiring. If your pet falls off a boat or fishing pier, the vest may safe their life. ▶ Never toss a dog into water. ▶ Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur, and pink skin, can sunburn. Limit your dog's exposure during the day and apply sunblock to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside.

Heatstroke can be the serious and often fatal result of a dog's prolonged exposure to excessive heat. We've listed the signs of heatstroke and the actions you should take if your dog is overcome.

cuttings

Cabinetry . Countertops . Kitchen Design BEFORE

Early Stages:

Heavy panting Rapid breathing Excessive drooling Bright red gums and tongue Standing 4-square, posting or spreading out in an attempt to maintain balance

Advanced Stages:

White or blue gums Lethargy, unwillingness to move Uncontrollable urination or defecation Labored, noisy breathing Shock

If your dog begins to exhibit signs of heatstroke, you should immediately try to cool the dog down: Apply rubbing alcohol to the dog's paw pads. Apply ice packs to the groin area. Hose down with water. Allow the dog to lick ice chips or drink a small amount of water. Offer Pedialyte to restore electrolytes.

Check your dog's temperature regularly during this process. Once the dog's temperature has stabilized at between 100 to 102 F, you can stop the cool-down process. If you cannot get the dog cooled down and you begin to see signs of advanced heatstroke, take the dog to the veterinarian immediately.

Use these tips for better success with growing begonias:

1| Select firm tubers. If purchasing bedding

plants, make sure stems are sturdy and foliage and stem are free from damage. Even a tiny cut can be an opening for organisms that can damage or kill the plant.

Simply touch a button and screens lower to provide protection from inclement weather, pollen and buzzing and flying insects. “Homeowners are embracing the outdoor-indoor lifestyle, and this system allows you to experience the best of both worlds,” says Dennis Wildeboer, vice president and general manager at City Builders in Cedar Falls. City Builders is the only LifeRoom franchise in Iowa. The state of-the-art system puts the homeowner in control of the environment using a retractable, motorized screen system, Wildeboer explains. The technologically advanced LifeRoom has a number of accessory options offered by City Builders, including LED mood lighting, a cool mist system that can reduce room temperature up to 40 degrees, an overhead canned lighting system and an infrared heating system. LifeRoom screens also reduces UV rays up to 95 percent, plus an opaque screen provides a large viewing screen for projecting movies, TV shows and sports, as well as privacy.

reate your own dish garden or fun and funky living conversation piece with succulents. Go vertical, go charming or make your own hypertufa containers to house these charmers. Be as creative as you want because succulents are tough, adaptable and thrive in hot sun. Sempervivums — hens and chicks types — and sedum are generally the best succulents for Zones 4 and 5. As the popularity of these plants has grown, garden centers and nurseries are offering a greater variety of succulents in all shapes, colors, forms and sizes. So mix-and-match to your heart’s content. Use your imagination to add decorative elements to create habitats ranging from fairy gardens to deserts. Your containers should be well-drained and the soil must be friable and light; too soggy or slowdraining soil will kill succulents. You can use a

cactus soil or make your own mix using 4 parts plain (no fertilizer included) potting soil, 5 parts perlite and 1 part coarse sand. Experts suggest top-dressing containers with small river rock, gravel, poultry grit (crushed stone available at feed supply stores) or aquarium rock. Place the garden in full sun. Succulents store water in their leaves. Water thoroughly when the plants need it and let water run out of the drainage hole. You need to get water to the roots or they’ll die. Or if the plants are kept too wet, they’ll die. Watering will depend on whether it is hot and dry or humid. How do you know when it’s time to water? Place a stone on top of the soil and wait a bit. Pick up and turn over the stone. If it is moist or damp, don’t water. If it is dry, water thoroughly. Add 1 tablespoon white vinegar to 5 gallons of water when watering to increase acidity (succulents like it!)

fire Gas-operated fire pits, fire rings and fire-pit tables are emerging as modern-day substitutes for campfires. Fire pits are holes dug into the ground to keep flames from spreading. They vary from intimate cooking fires for two to elaborate, gas-fueled burners that become conversation centers for large gatherings. Fire rings are cleared flat surfaces with protective metal, stone or concrete built around them to contain the burn. They often include cooking grills fueled by wood or gas — either natural gas or propane. Fire-ring or fire-pit tables have holes in the middle for open flames to provide ambiance and warmth. The tables can be used for place settings when the burner center is capped. A fire pit provides many great benefits to your home and offers a nice way to relax as you conclude a day of summer fun, say the experts at Menards.

» Add curb appeal. You may have one thing in mind, but your fire pit will offer several benefits including curb appeal. » Social element. A fire pit is an affordable way to create a gathering place for friends and family. It’s easy to maintain and makes a home more unique. » Hosting a bonfire. A great way to socialize with a few guests while still maintaining a low-key atmosphere in your outdoor space, especially on a cool summer or fall night. The warmth provides an excuse to be outside. » Cooking food. A fire pit is a great source for roasting food, especially marshmallows, hot dogs or kabobs over an open fire. Create memories for your family and friends of making s’mores and enjoy the simple pleasures that life has to offer. » Unique projects. Whether small or large, customize your outdoor space with landscaping, furniture, seating and the actual fire pit to create an intimate space for outdoor living. » Create your own. Fire pits are perfect for any backyard, adding rustic appeal to your landscape and extending your outdoor patio season on a chilly evening. Whether using pavers, a heavy-duty fire ring, portable unit or something more permanent like a chimney, a fire pit will provide lasting memories.
