timeless black

T

here's a reason the little black dress gets its spot in every woman's closet. Black is at once classic, fresh, modern and edgy. It can be whatever you want it to be, and it always looks good. The same holds true in the home: Black is both a rebel and a darling, but it is always stylish. Right now, we're seeing black hardware, appliances, trim, doors and walls on the upswing as homeowners seek to find something that will last longer than the next fad. Dee Schlotter, a trend forecaster at PPG Architectural Coatings, says that while neutrals have been gaining in popularity over the past five years, "we're seeing deeper neutrals coming." In fact, each year, PPG creates four color palettes for designer inspiration, and next year, each one will have a black in it. It doesn't hurt that black heightens the level of sophistication in a room. Turns out, black is always timeless, even when it's trending.

A black faucet, like this one from Ikea, is an affordable way to add a little black into your kitchen.

Here are four ways to master the color:

01

Use it to highlight architectural elements

Winter 2016

6

Imagine a feature wall that reaches up to a vaulted ceiling with a floorto-ceiling fireplace: Black would give that fireplace the backdrop and drama it deserves. But say you don't have anything that special — that's where black becomes a secret weapon. Paint doors and wood trim around windows in matte black. Black can also be used as a foundation for a salon-style gallery or a display of collections from travel, letting the art and objects be the stars. Try a textured wallpaper or grasscloth for this.

Combine different tones and finishes

Baby steps

There's onyx, ebony, jet, charcoal. There's blue-black, gray-black, brown-black, green-black. For the best application, you want to vary the shades and sheen of black in a home. Think oil-rubbed-bronze lamp fixture, ebony-stained table, velvet drapery. A variety of textures, too, creates depth and gives the eye a lot to look at without getting overstimulated. Woven leather pillows or cowhide rugs invite touch.

Is painting all of your trim black a little daunting? Then start small by painting the newell posts and railing in your stairwell. Other places to start are cabinet hardware, bathroom lavatory sets, frames, fixtures and small accessories. If your room were a sentence, these would be the punctuation marks. But if you find black just isn't right for you, go with a dark gray to get a similar dramatic effect.

04 Make trends look more sophisticated

Retro-looking appliances, natural fibers and bold graphic prints are all having their day in the sun. Do these trends in black, and they'll have longer staying power. Chalkboard walls are still trending, too, and while you can get chalkboard paint in any color, they look best in traditional black or charcoal.

oss a few new decorative pillows on the sofa or a chair, and you’ve got an instant update. How easy is that? And inexpensive, too, if you do it yourself. Plaid is still trendy this holiday season, so purchase a few yards of plaid flannel or other plaid fabric and make pillow covers for existing pillows or new pillow forms. Another hot look is stenciling on fabric. You’ve seen the designs — Christmas trees, favorite holiday sayings as simple as “Fa la la,” “Ho, Ho, Ho” or “Jolly Holly Christmas” — stenciled onto pillows for sale in big box stores or catalogs. But you can get that look — and get tight-fitting professional decorative stenciled pillows — by following these basic instructions:

01

Always make your finished pillow cover two inches smaller than the pillow form. Example: for a 20" pillow form, cut fabric into two 19" squares, allowing for a 1/2" seam allowance.

ew traditional is a fresher, freer look that honors the classics. The style blends traditional architectural and decorative elements with contemporary ones for unexpected, sometimes edgy results. "It's all about balance," said New York interior designer Alexa Hampton. She said the trend started in Europe, where older residences "are often filled with ornate architecture: herringbone floors, intricate plaster work, French doors. With heavy decoration, these architectural bones can seem fussy." That led to an "undecorated" movement — white walls, furniture with sharp angles, minimalism. "I think this foil of old and new is essential to good design," she said. "The conversation between modern and classic creates a tension, and when done right, it's very powerful."

weeds, tartans and twills drape cushions and comforters; furniture is clad in supple leather; drapes are made of suiting fabric; and hardware takes style notes from the gentlemen's accessory drawer. "The classic good looks of menswear are popping up in subtle and unexpected ways," says Jamie Drake of the luxury design firm Drake/Anderson Interiors in New York. Drake and business partner Caleb Anderson are fans of woven horsehair textiles, and have produced a collection for Holland & Sherry. The sleek fabrics with subtle yet striking colorations are loomed from horse tails and cotton. Their durability makes them ideal for chair, bench and headboard upholstery. Drake also has designed a collection of luxury bath accessories with a classic herringbone pattern on charcoalgray, embossed Italian suede. Named Savile, after London's famed street of haberdashery, the collection is trimmed with polished chrome for a crisp, tailored look. And for Stark, Drake's Jakara pattern puts the elegant chevron in a soft wool rug, offered in urbane neutrals. Subtle, tonal hues and fabrics with a textural depth offer a handsome — often luxurious — masculine aesthetic that transcends gender, says Shawn Sowers, principal design director at furniture company Sauder, in Archbold, Ohio.

In late summer, Kyle and Lori Larson and their three young children came up out of the basement and into the light. After a nearly year-long construction project, the second-floor addition and a host of renovations on the main floor were finished. “It feels surreal, like we haven’t really moved in yet,” confesses Lori, smiling. Kyle, a builder who owns LGC Companies and who designed and managed the construction, nods in agreement. “I’m not surprised by the size, but that there’s nothing I’d do different as far as a floor plan. No room is too small, or too big, and already, we’re utilizing all the space,” he explains. The original 2,300-square-foot contemporary home was built in 2008. As their family grew, the Larsons felt the home no longer fitted their needs. But instead of building new, or buying a new home, they chose to build up and add a second floor. Children’s rooms and the master suite are now on opposite wings of the loft-like second floor, connected by a catwalk with glass railings. There are separate laundry facilities for the kids’ rooms, and their two boys share a Jack-and-Jack bathroom off their rooms, while their daughter has her own bath with custom-colored Sherwin Williams hibiscus vanity to match the paint color she chose for her bedroom. In the master suite, black and white are used to dramatic effect in the bedroom, while the bath is a cloud city of sybaritic serenity with a focalpoint tub and shades of white with a mix of matte and gloss finishes and pops of color. Porcelain tile is laid in sizes ranging from 6 by 24, 12 by 24 and 4 by 16. The large walk-in shower has high-

end appeal, but was done on a tight budget using standard Delta fixtures and body sprays. “The second-floor family room is one of the most rewarding new spaces in the house. It’s a great place to hang out comfortably with the kids, watch movies, play games and spend time together,” says Kyle. The addition of a staircase leading to the second floor meant reconfiguring space on the main living level. European white pine oak floors flow throughout the space, and Larson has reclaimed his home office (previously turned into a kid’s bedroom) and the sunroom, pressed into service as the nursery, is now a pleasant, sun-lit sitting room. New kitchen countertops are solid-surface quartz from Silestone, while the bathroom counters are Corian with integral sinks. In the living room, the big-screen TV was replaced by a modern fireplace and art wall. The Larsons’ love for contemporary style means they’ve kept these spaces neutral — a blank canvas for displaying art. “The emphasis is on the space, rather than on things in the space. People become the focus. It’s kind of a nice break,” Kyle notes. The home’s exterior is still contemporary, but has a revised entrance and warmer feel. It’s clad in decorative veneer Texas limestone and James Hardie Artisan Premier Lap Siding. The siding creates deep shadow lines and corners that can be mitered. The strong horizontal impact appealed to the Larsons. Future plans are to redo the basement, “but we’re taking a break from it now. The pressure is off now that the addition is done,” Kyle adds. or years, she’d walked past the 1879 Victorian house and admired the decorative brackets, overhanging eaves and other elements of Italianate architecture. When it came on the market, she could hardly wait to walk through the home. Stepping inside the front doors with their leaded glass transom, she was stopped in her tracks. “I was totally awestruck. I’d never seen anything like it. Right there and then, I fell in love with the parquet floor,” the homeowner says. The home’s luxurious, original butternut and walnut parquet is laid in an elaborate pattern that juxtaposes angles and geometric patterns. It’s taken 137 years of shoes, boots and socked feet walking across it to achieve the fine, mellow patina. The main staircase was built by U.S. Civil War veterans. She also discovered the home has a deep history, such as serving as the home of author John Leggett when he served as director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop from 1970 to 1987. “Many famous authors came through that front door, and many stayed overnight in an upstairs guest room,” she says, including Kurt Vonnegut and Joseph Heller. After purchasing the home in 2012, the homeowners set about renovating the historic residence, beginning with the interiors. They enlisted the services of Lammers Construction, Mark Russo Kitchen and Bath Design and Rhonda Staley, IIDA, an interior designer with

Brandon Pollock

the Mansion, all in Iowa City. “It’s challenging to find people who are willing to work on an old house like this, who respect the history and really understand the architecture and character involved. I wanted to maintain the legacy. The quality of the craftsmanship and workmanship in an older home like this is worth maintaining,” the homeowner asserts. The kitchen and dining rooms underwent dramatic transformations. In the kitchen, dark cabinets, a ruined floor and an old breakfast bar were removed. In their place, softly colored, painted and glazed cabinetry — some with glass fronts — and ornate gold and apricot faceted crystal pulls were installed. A gold-infused granite tops the island that runs the length of the kitchen. The stone also appears on the backsplash and countertops. Underfoot, the large porcelain tiles are highly polished, reflecting the elaborate gold tin ceiling and crown molding overhead. Space was reconfigured based on the original floor plan, and the ceiling was raised to its original height. A large copper relief wall hanging, Italian figurative painting and original sconces draw attention to the fireplace, which has been converted to gas. It is one of four fireplaces original to the home. Shelves in the cooking center and a shelf beneath a broad window are supported by corbels and brackets to match adornments on the home’s exterior. Staley designed balloon shades in sheer wool with gold thread for the kitchen and library.

The library, at the front of the home, doubles as the homeowner’s office and a place for her piano. In the sumptuous dining room, the story is all about grace, beauty and comfort. “When I’m helping the client choose colors and style, I want them to look beautiful in the setting and to feel totally at home. She loves gold, an uplifting, warm color, and acanthus leaves. As a designer, you take all those things into consideration,” Staley explains. Crown molding is adorned with acanthus leaves, and wallpaper with its toile design of foliage, birds and flowers is so extremely fine and fragile, it is nearly translucent. It’s called “Arlington,” and is from York Wallcoverings. The original fireplace is fronted with decoratively carved soapstone with a mountain marble hearth. An antique chandelier hangs above the Theodore Alexander table of African mahogany and satin wood with intricate inlays, which was handcrafted in the Phillipines. The homeowner found the genuine onyx-topped Napolean III table in a Chicago antique store. The homeowners moved in when renovations were basically complete in 2014. There have been a few surprises along the way, too, the homeowner says, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed — including the discovery and removal of eight dead squirrels in the wall of an upstairs bedroom. That required the removal of exterior siding and insulation — along with the homeowners for a short time. H&G

hen the holiday season warms up, you’ll find her happily bustling around her big new kitchen, baking cookies and quick breads and making candy. She also hosts a group of friends and family who get together annually to make and bake enough pumpkin rolls to fill everyone’s freezer for the season. “We entertain a lot, and we have a big family. I needed a big kitchen, and I wanted it to be homey, cozy and comfortable. And it’s just so much more fun to cook in a new kitchen,” the homeowner enthuses. Distressed maple floors are stained in rich cherry to coordinate with cherry glazed cabinetry. Countertops and the island are all clad in neutral “Dove” quartz. The island is surrounded by comfortable barstools upholstered in distressed leather. Her white ironstone collection is proudly displayed on open shelves complete with a ceiling-mounted sliding ladder, one of many pieces she salvaged from her father’s hardware store. There’s also a breakfast table in front of broad windows for a view of the surrounding rural countryside, a coffee center for her husband, a butler’s pantry with bar, fridge and sink and a huge walk-in pantry and laundry center. The homeowners chose a great

room concept for the main living area in their new ranch-style house, built two years ago by contractor Randy Mulford. Interior decorator Karen Reece assisted the owners in selecting materials, fixtures, color schemes, furnishings and accessories. “We’ve been friends for a long time, and we always seem to hit on the same things. I knew she wanted a house with character and uniqueness that reflects the people who live there,” says Reece. Furnishings and light fixtures throughout the home were sourced from Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. Vintage cabinets are from the old hardware store, and Tony Zinn of Tony Zinn Furniture and Design restored and made a top for an old gift wrap station from the store that now serves as a work surface in the pantry. Zinn’s salvaged and restored barn door from an old horse barn hides the pantry. Cherry-stained pine car siding cloaks the vaulted ceiling above the great room's main seating area. The cultured stone fireplace surround of gray, honey and copper reflects the home’s warm neutral color scheme throughout the space. “The ceiling is a big part of this space, so it needed to have some interest. The car siding adds that, and the fireplace is another focal point,” Reece notes.

In the dining area, an original slate chalkboard salvaged during the demolition of the New Providence school is framed in stone, a surefire conversation starter when family gathers at the long table. A large porch with a fireplace is yet another space for entertaining. By contrast, the master suite is a retreat complete with a soaking tub and walk-in shower. The double vanity is topped with quartz and cabinetry is glazed the same rich cherry as the remainder of the home. “The home is very comfortable to live in and easy for entertaining. Karen and Randy paid a lot of attention to detail, and it shows. We’ve incorporated things we love with new things, and I’m very happy with how it all turned out,” the homeowner adds. H&G

he homeowners wanted wall covering in the dining room of their 1910 home, but they were on the fence about the color. Interior designer Alex Von Ahsen from Phelan’s completely understood, so they struck a compromise. Paint the walls above the wainscoting the same color as the proposed wall covering and live with it for six months, Von Ahsen suggested. It worked. When time was up, the homeowners had fallen in love with the color. Now the walls are covered in soft teal grasscloth — hung horizontally to complement the size of the room. “It’s bright and cherry and has such a gorgeous feel. That dining room has such beautiful woodwork and (original) plaster ceiling with a design, that the soft teal color warms it up and shows off all of it,” says the homeowner. The homeowners purchased the stately home in 2007 and have phased in their renovations. “They’ve lived here long enough to know how they use the space, and how they want it to look. The house lends itself to entertaining,” Von Ahsen notes. “Everything is about showcasing the room and the people in the room, and it’s always nice to play into the character of the house. I don’t like a space that is too generic or over-done so that it

lacks an authentic vibe. You want a sense of ease, a nice flow for traffic through the rooms. You don’t want to overfill the space with furniture.” The double pedestal dining room table is from Thomasville’s “Spellbound” collection, while the granite-topped credenza and hutch are from Thomasville’s “Studio 455” collection. The woodback chairs are from Stanley’s “Avalon Heights” collection, and upholstered host chairs at either end of the table are CR Laine. The same Schumacher “Sophia” velvet fabric in driftwood hangs as elegant draperies at the windows, trimmed in bronze “Labryrinth Tape.” “The host chairs … that took me about a year to decide that Alex was right, and I should do it. Now I’m so glad we chose those chairs,” the homeowner says. As pretty as it is, all of the fabrics chosen had to be durable enough to hold up to children and six dogs. “I don’t allow them in every room, but every room has fabrics that can put up with the hair and claws — and the kids’ stains,” she explains. The front parlor was originally used as her husband’s office, and now is a restful hang-out. “We still call it ‘dad’s office.’ We had that beautiful pink marble fireplace to work around, so we chose dark colors to make it more masculine without compromising the

integrity of the fireplace.” Dark walls are the wow factor here, heightening original wainscoting and moldings and set off by the coffered ceiling, which was added several years ago. A low-slung Chesterfield sofa, deep Edinburgh chair, both from Norwalk, and a custom-made rectangular ottoman in a paprika color runs the length of the sofa. Von Ahsen describes the room as “handsome and easy to look at — a grown-up space for lounging,” and the homeowner is happy with the entire home. “Sometimes I feel like I’m living in somebody else’s house,” she says, laughing. “It’s very warm, very inviting and relaxing, while respecting the era of the house.” H&G

glory

Holiday gatherings are the perfect time to wow your guests by showcasing a beautiful main dish. College Square Hy-Vee Executive Chef Jim Nadeau has created a Stuffed Crown Roast of Pork for a sophisticated and flavorful focal point.

Sure, it’s a splurge — and it’s worth it just to hear your guests asking for another serving. Plus you can serve up to 14 people with one crown roast. Nadeau recommends asking your butcher in advance, to prepare the roast by trimming and tying it. Otherwise, follow the how-to photos shown here, or check out the video at cv-hg.com. Stuffing can be prepared separately from the roast, flavored with apples, seasoned pork sausage and herbs. Or opt for succulent and savory Braised Beef Short Ribs. It’s a less expensive cut of meat, tenderized and made delicious with Chef Jim’s recipe. This richly flavored main meat entrée tastes as good as it looks, especially when served with roasted vegetables and gravy made from thickened meat drippings.

Stuffed Crown Roast of Pork 3 tablespoons butter ¾ cup chopped onion ¼ cup chopped celery ½ cup peeled, cored and chopped tart apple ½ cup fresh bread crumbs 1 pound ground pork ½ pound ground seasoned pork sausage ½ cup chopped parsley ½ teaspoon dried sage 1 ½ teaspoons salt 1 ½ teaspoons ground black pepper 9 pounds crown pork roast Chef’s notes: Chef Jim often uses leftover artisan bread for his bread crumbs. For CVHG’s photo shoot, he used cinnamon raisin bread, which gave the stuffing a wonderful flavor. He also likes to bake the stuffing separately from the crown pork roast, so he fills in the center of the crown with crumpled aluminum foil. The recipe, however, bakes the stuffing in the crown roast. Preheat oven to 350 F. For the stuffing: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. When foam subsides add onion and sauté, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes. Stir in celery and apples; sauté (without browning) about 5 minutes longer. Scrape skillet contents into a large mixing bowl. Add bread crumbs, ground pork, sausage meat, parsley, sage, salt and pepper. Mix together gently but thoroughly. Do not taste the uncooked stuffing, for it contains raw pork; instead, fry a small ball of the stuffing in the skillet, then taste and season with more salt and pepper as necessary. Fill the center of the crown with the stuffing, mounding it slightly. Cover it with a round of aluminum foil and wrap the ends of the chop bones in strips of foil to prevent them from charring and snapping off. Place the crown on a rack in a shallow roasting pan just large enough to hold it comfortably, and roast in the center of the oven, undisturbed, for about 3 hours or until internal temperature of meat is 175 F. Approximately 30 minutes before pork is done, remove the foil from the top of the stuffing to allow the top to brown. Carefully transfer the crown to a large, heated, circular platter, strip the foil from the ends of the chops and replace it with paper frills, if desired. Let the crown rest for about 10 minutes before carving and serving. To carve the roast: Use scissors to cut away string that held the crown in place while roasting. Insert a large fork in the side of the crown to steady it and, with a large, sharp knife, cut down through each rib to detach the chops. Two chops per person is a customary portion accompanied by a generous serving of the stuffing. cv-hg.com

STEP 1

STEP 4

For uniform size, ask your butcher for a rib rack cut from the thick end of the ribs. That means the ribs each will be about the same size. Use a sharp knife to cut into the membrane and remove it.

Wrap a length of strength around the thick part of the loin and continue wrapping under the ribs. When it is tight, tie off the string.

STEP 2

STEP 5

Cut a long slit into the meat between each rib and cut away excess meat. French the bones. That means between cuts and ends of bone, cut away meat to expose 1 ½ to 2 inches of bone.

Fill the crown with uncooked stuffing mix, or if you prefer cooking the stuffing separately, fill the void with crumpled aluminum foil. Cover the ends of the bones with aluminum foil to prevent scorching.

STEP 3

STEP 6

Stand the rack on its end with bones up. Gather the rack into a circle, curving the ribs so the ends meet.

After the roast has baked and cooled, cut away the string, steady the roast with a meat fork and use a sharp knife to cut the chops.

christmas fudge

E

veryone loves fudge, especially at Christmas – and the thicker, the better. This adaptation C&H Sugar recipe will quickly become a holiday favorite because the flavor is incomparable and the recipe is so easy to make. You won’t even need a candy thermometer.

White Christmas Fudge 2 ½ cups C&H Powdered Sugar 2/3 cup milk ¼ cup (1/2 stick) butter 12 ounces (12 squares) white chocolate, coarsely chopped ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup chopped, toasted nuts See variations/substitutions below

Line an 8-inch square pan with aluminum foil; rub butter over foil to grease it. Toast nuts before chopping. Mix sugar and milk in heavy 3-quart saucepan. Over medium heat, add butter and bring to a boil, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. It takes some time to bring it up to a boil. When it begins to softly boil, stop stirring and let it boil for an additional five minutes. Over low heat, add white chocolate and vanilla extract. Stir, then whisk until chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth. Stir in nuts (and dried fruit, if using). Carefully pour hot mixture into prepared pan and spread evenly. Refrigerate 2 hours or until firm. Invert pan, peel off foil and cut into squares.

For thicker fudge, double the recipe. Notes: To add dried fruit, coarsely chop ¾ cups dried cherries, cranberries or apricots. You can also substitute 12 ounces of milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips.

The very best

Brown Sugar Bourbon Rice Pudding

W

inter months require warm desserts. It's about the only time I prefer them, actually. Hot summer crisps and pies can (and should!) be apologetically tempered with a scoop of ice cream, but brash hot chocolate, molten lava cake and creme brulee have no such remedy. Don't get me wrong: If you offer me rice pudding in June, I will eat the rice pudding. But the snowscapes of December are when I really want it. Growing up, I never understood why people disliked rice pudding. Then I had the packaged version; it, like regular chocolate pudding, bears little resemblance to homemade. Especially, in this case, to my grandmother's take on it. I called her up and asked if I could visit one day to watch her make rice pudding. This was necessary because there was no recipe for the dessert — she'd simply made it so often over the years that she operated on instinct. She poured some milk into a small saucepan as the rice simmered in its water, and when she turned back to stir the pot, I went and retrieved a measuring cup to see how much there was.

My careful observations were for naught, of course. As she occasionally tasted a spoonful of the rice, she would splash in some milk, kept at a simmer so its addition wouldn't interrupt the rice's cooking, then replenish the pan's supply from the milk jug. I ended up with relatively few notes on my recipe card, but from what I can tell, she used far more rice and far less milk than the version I'm sharing today. I've never really gotten hers to work, and I'm not sure if I what I wrote down was wrong, or if I lack the patience for her technique. I don't think she left the stove while it cooked for at least an hour, a discipline I do not yet have. I'm guilty of doing dishes, getting lost in my phone or, in fact, writing this in between turns of the pot. Fortunately, the method for this Brown Sugar Bourbon Rice Pudding is a little less fussy than 60-plus minutes of constant stirring. This dish is an amalgam of my grandmother's version, an America's Test Kitchen version and their recipe for Brown Sugar Bourbon Whipped Cream. From the whipped cream, it inherits a smooth mixture of brown sugar, bourbon and sour cream. From my

entertaining grandmother, it gets its serving temperature — HOT, PLEASE, ALWAYS — and its serving style. As she did, I put the pudding in a wide, shallow bowl and shave slices of butter over the top; once that's melted, I sprinkle enough sugar in to soak up the butter and dust it with cinnamon. If I didn't just sell you on this with a layer of sugar/butter/cinnamon slurry, I don't know what else I can do here. Best get back to my stirring.

Brown sugar BourBon rice Pudding 2 cups water 1 cup medium-grain rice 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 cups whole milk 3/4 cup raisins 2/3 cup brown sugar, plus more for topping 1/4 cup bourbon 1/4 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 cup butter Cinnamon, for dusting

Bring the water to boil in a large saucepan. Stir in the rice and salt. Cover, turn the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the water is almost fully absorbed, 15 to 20 minutes. Microwave the milk until steaming, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir the hot milk, raisins, brown sugar and bourbon into the rice. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to simmer, then reduce heat to maintain simmer. Cook, uncovered and stirring frequently, until mixture starts to thicken, about 30 minutes. Reduce heat to low and continue to cook, stirring every couple of minutes to prevent scorching, until spoon is just able to stand up in pudding, about 15 minutes longer.

Off heat, stir in sour cream and vanilla; adjust bourbon flavor by adding one or two more teaspoons if needed. Transfer rice to serving bowl, if using. Slice butter over top; when melted, sprinkle additional brown sugar over surface until butter is mostly absorbed. Dust with cinnamon and serve immediately. Chef's notes: If you don't like raisins in your rice pudding, this dish can certainly survive without them. I thought about letting them sit in the bourbon to rehydrate some, but I haven't yet tried it. Variation: For Classic Rice Pudding, swap brown sugar for equal amount of white sugar and omit raisins, bourbon, vanilla, and sour cream.

… a Holiday classic Whether it’s served as spicy cake topped with whipped cream, a sweet and snappy cookie, a plump muffin or even a slice of bread, gingerbread may just be the perfect — classic — holiday dessert. Although gingerbread dates to medieval times, the word “gingerbread” has evolved over the centuries and across cultures. According to Smithsonian.com, Americans have been baking gingerbread for more than 200 years. Even George Washington’s mother had a favorite recipe! Generally speaking, gingerbread is used to refer to the cookie in such shapes as the gingerbread man, or a dark, moist cake flavored with molasses, ginger and other spices.

bloomin' magic

I

t won’t be long before winter doldrums set in. Treat yourself to a jolt of blooming color. Cheerful pots of daffodils and tulips have been coaxed into early bloom and can be found at local garden centers, home centers, supermarkets and floral shops. You may also find other forced bulbs, including crocus, hyacinth, muscari, dwarf narcissus, Iris reticulata and daisy-like Anemone blanda. These harbingers of spring are surprisingly versatile. Look for forced bulbs that are still young with tight green buds showing just a bit of color and without a lot of strappy green foliage. As bulb plants grow, you'll get weeks of enjoyment watching their development until the buds burst into living color. While it may be tempting to bring home potted bulbs that are already in bloom, you'll likely be disappointed when the flowers quickly fade. Most potted bulbs come in plastic nursery pots, practical but not exactly a statement on style. Pots can be double-potted in slightly larger, prettier containers or a cachepot (a container with no drainage hole). If the container has a drainage hole, slip a plastic plant saucer in the bottom. It's also easy to completely repot forced bulbs. Simply loosen the soil around the edges of the plastic pot and slip out the bulb — soil and all — and place it in a more attractive container. Tamp loosened soil back into place. Keep soil moist but not soggy. Use your imagination when repotting and have some fun:

For the longest bloom time (and most fun), select potted bulbs with shoots already "up" with fully formed buds that are not yet flowering.
