Cheeky, fun and sophisticated, trendsetting pink isn’t just for little girls or old aunties anymore.

Pink is a happy, hopeful, grownup color that spans the spectrum from barely-there blush to bold-asyou-please fuschia, and the color is showing up on walls, fabrics and accessories for the home. “We’ve been missing pink for a while. We’ve seen blips — fuschias and other pinks — in the past, but the color hasn’t taken hold as much as it has now. We have three different pinks in our 2016 color forecast,” says Jackie Jordan, Sherwin-Williams director of color marketing. Jordan says pink can take home interiors in different directions. Make it masculine by pairing the right shade of pink with contrasting or complementary colors, for example. “Pair it with glossy black or charcoal gray, and the look is very modern and strong. It looks great with deep espressos and chocolate browns, and I love pinks with greens, either a true green or the yellowish side of green. Think about a pink flower with green foliage … it works in nature.” Paired with orange, pink makes an energetic statement. Pink, ivory and raspberry make a lively combo, or on the soft side, choose a blush color and play it against chic whites, off-whites, ivories, taupes or other neutrals. “You may not want to paint the whole room pink, but paint a feature wall. Splash a bold fuschia on the wall and hang black-andwhite framed photography on it for a contemporary, stunning design feature,” Jordan suggests.
5
elements / Color palette
Hot pink makes food appear more appetizing in the dining room, color experts note, and its softer shades are complexion-flattering for bedrooms. A warm shade of pink can visually warm a north-facing room, too. Why not paint all the doors down a long, boring hallway in a deep pink, or give old furniture a new lease on life with a pop of pink? A bright pink ceiling against dark or pale walls is an attention-getter, too. If you’re one of those “a little goes a long way” people, look for pink mixed into gender-neutral fabric and wallpaper patterns, artwork and accessories.
Blush pink works well with neutrals and grays, as shown in these Sherwin Williams’ rooms, above; for a high-fashion look, opt for luscious, deep pink “Rialto” from Behr, at left, or one of SW’s brighter fuschias.

Simply White OC-117 Benjamin Moore
Benjamin Moore’s 2016 color of the year sounds plain vanilla,
but their choice of Simply White shows that “white is transcendent, powerful and polarizing – it is either taken for granted or obsessed over," Benjamin Moore Creative Director Ellen O'Neill said in the company's announcement. Miles Redd, a New York designer known for his richly hued interiors, was rooting for a daffodil yellow or maybe a shade of blue. "I don't think of white as a color. But I know it is. I live in technicolor," Redd said. "Most people do go for white paint. Color is something people don't always know how to handle. I guess it's not surprising given that white sheets and white towels are
the number one sellers, too." "I have never met a white I didn't like," said Margaret Russell, editor in chief of Architectural Digest. She then retracted that when she recalled that she had to have a new apartment repainted because the white was too beige. "I love the fact that Benjamin Moore chose a white, because it calls attention to the fact that there are so many nuances in white. You just want it to be the right one." Some color consultants think white will replace gray as the hot color. But caution: White can look shadowy and dull if the lighting is wrong. Source: Washington Post

base notes The bottoms are tops in new furniture design. The emphasis on the base took several forms. Some manufacturers took their cues from nature, others went geometric and a few were whimsical or classical. And it wasn't just tables. Lamps also cast light on the foundations of this trend. Both the "Dapper Man" lamp and "Coco's String of Pearls and Little Black Dress" lamp from Alexander Julian's new collection for Jonathan Charles are the perfect merger of fashion and furniture design. The detail in the marquetry and materials is exquisite. Among the other designers and home furnishings makers getting back to "base"-ics were Kelly Wearstler, Alexa Hampton, Dakota Jackson, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Universal Furniture, Theodore Alexander, Robert James and many others. Jackson got right to the bottom of his glass top Kingsley dining table. "My work is about the discovery of the detail," he says.

Find the right fit for your body
You can starve to death in two weeks, but you can die from lack of sleep in 10 days, according to statistics at the Better Sleep Council. We spend 33 percent of our lives asleep, and those ZZZ’s recharge our brains, repair our cells and relax our bodies. If you’re not getting a good night’s sleep, it may be your mattress. Consider how an adjustable bed can improve the quality of your life. Forget the visual image of a hospital bed. Modern adjustable beds are attractive and can fit into any bedroom décor, while providing flexibility and comfort while making it easier to find that perfect sleep position, says Charles Foster of Fosters Mattress in Waterloo. “Today’s adjustable beds better fit our bodies and our lifestyles, too. In a purist world, the bed is for sleeping, but we take our electronic devices – laptops, iPads – to bed, too. You can adjust the head or the foot, bend the knees to increase circulation, raise the head to tilt the esophagus if you have acid reflux, adjust the bed to accommodate a sore back or alleviate pressure points,” says Foster. When you hear the words “adjustable bed,” realize that it’s only the platform that a mattress sits on. “It’s the same space the normal box spring would go and looks very similar. You’ll also want to purchase a new mattress for the motion base as part of the package."
Basic adjustable beds can elevate head and feet. Higher-end models have much more to offer, such as the Serta Motion Custom Adjustable Base Foundation with six massage levels, Bluetooth Connectivity for smart phone and tables, USB power ports, a wireless speaker system and more. In addition to comfort, there are health benefits for adjustable bed users. A massage function, for example, can improve circulation in diabetics. There are other considerations, such as the size of the bed and choice of dual/split platforms that allow each side of the bed to be adjusted independently, motor, weight limit, battery backup, wired or wireless remotes to operate the platform. Test the range of motion of the adjustable beds you’re considering. Ask about the warranty, delivery and setup options. When you find the one you want, now’s the time to choose the mattress. “We have different mattresses that work on the platform, so it comes down to which you think is comfortable,” Foster says. Ask to try various mattresses – firm, plush, etc. – and text each one by lying down for 10 to 15 minutes to get a real feel for it. Test the range of motion on the adjustable bed. All adjustable beds require surge protectors, Foster adds.

Faux fur ottoman stool with hairpin legs, Target. In this season's home decor offerings, faux furs are common in pillows, throws and stools. They add a touch of drama and cruelty-free coziness. Set decorator Beth Kushnick, whose chic rooms on CBS' "The Good Wife" garnered such a following that she launched her own line of decorative accessories, called BAK Home and available at Wayfair and AllModern, likes to use faux fur throws and pillows as a textural element. "Keeping them in the same color palette as the sofa or bed works best and creates another layer," she says. For her taste, a little fur goes far. "I use it sparingly, but specifically. Picture a crisp bed of white linens with a white faux fur throw, or a black velvet sofa with black faux fur pillows as a backdrop for some other patterned pillows," she says. texture & form Susan Hable atlanta-Based teXtile designer susan haBle’s first foray into furniture is far from a timid entry into the home furnishings category. there are 23 pieces, including dining room, living room and bedroom furniture in her collection, Hable for Hickory Chair. the heart of the new collection is the rose chamfered ottoman, which was inspired by the constellations. It expresses her feeling of unlimited possibilities. “I think when you are creative and open, one can do anything! I have never thought that anything I wanted to do wasn’t possible.” Her open, happy demeanor translates into all of the pieces. Ultimately, she sees herself as an artist. rose ottomans can be clustered to create a makeshift coffee table or used individually as extra seating. their pentagon shape is a playful departure from the typical round, rectangular or oval ottoman.

estooned with family heirloom, vintage and antique ornaments, the Christmas tree is perfectly centered in the living room windows. More than 2,000 twinkling white lights are woven through its heavily laden branches, making the whole room glow. It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Jenny Boevers’ home. She doesn’t mind spending nearly eight hours wrapping the tree in lights, and another day hanging the branches with literally hundreds of glass ornaments, large and small. As she hangs each bauble, special memories and moments are recalled of holidays past with family and friends. “I love the way everything glistens. I found the tree at Goodwill, and the ornaments are keepsakes from my grandmothers and great-grandmothers and old ones I’ve found in various places. There are some Christopher Radko ornaments, and some I’ve collected on trips. They all mean something to me.” The tree is topped with a whimsical vintage angel with a gold tinsel dress and pipecleaner arms that belonged to her grandmother. “We love turning out the lights and sitting and looking at the tree. It’s so beautiful. If it’s snowing outside, even better. I love the magical quality of Christmas,” says
Jenny, who co-owns the charming shop Fig & Frolic in Cedar Falls with her mom, Becky Hiatt. “We have lots of nieces and nephews, and I want Christmas to be memorable for them. They know they’ll see something really different at aunt Jenny’s.” Pearl-embellished ivory and red bottle brush trees are collected on the fireplace mantel, and a pair of matching lamps with harlequin motifs and black shades flanks the framed winter scene above the mantel. An old-fashioned, nearly life-sized stand-up cardboard Santa — an estate auction find — waves a welcome from beside the fireplace. Christmas colors appear yearround in the Boevers’ home. Crisp white blankets the walls and red accessories pop in the openconcept living space, particularly in the kitchen, where red painted beadboard and cabinets offer a cheerful contrast. “Red is my color,” Jenny explains, smiling. Her husband, Kurt, jokes that they’ve lost square footage in the living room because she’s painted the walls so many different colors – 5 or 6 – in the 15 years they’ve lived in the handicappedaccessible house. “I used to have colorful walls. I’m definitely not afraid of color,” she confesses. “But this time I’ve painted everything white, and I love pairing it with bright, vibrant

colors. It goes with our grayand-white exterior. I also want a splash of black in every room — that’s a classic look because it works.” As expected from one half of the creative duo from Fig & Frolic, Jenny’s home brims with quirky finds and fanciful embellishments, but perhaps the most striking element is the hardwood floor. Painted with Jenny’s favorite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, there are broad stripes of red, off-white, yellow, orange and shades of green, gray and blue. “For about 10 years, it was stained and varnished and very traditional. But the dog’s toenails and Kurt’s wheelchair roughed it up, and it was time for a change. I thought about stenciling, but that didn’t speak to me. I decided I was going to stripe it in lots of colors. It’s so happy,” she explains.

A cozy and soft olive green sectional sofa wraps the area in a warm hug. “I can put any color with it and it looks wonderful. The color might bend the rules of interior design a little. Sometimes you have to do that to create a space you love, that reflects who you are. I want to surround myself with things that matter to me.” Her home is a laboratory for her ideas and incorporates many reclaimed, repurposed and revamped objects, as well as special finds like the music chalkboard on one wall. She bought it for the frame at an auction and when she cleaned up it, discovered the musical notes. “That taught me to look beyond the dirt,” she says, smiling. H&G

rom watching the Chicago Black Hawks on the 84inch TV screen to putting a quick, hot meal in front of two hockey-playing boys seated on stools at the granite-topped island, the main living area in this new Craftsman-style house gets a work out. The family is always on the go, but still manages to find time to enjoy their surroundings. “We really like the Craftsman and Prairie look, and we wanted to build a home that had that. We wanted it to be wide open, comfortable and casually elegant,” says the homeowner. And that’s what Kugler Construction built. “It was an easy project. Communication was good, and that’s important on a project. We want to get to know the client, what they want, so in the end, they’ll be happy in their home,” says Jackie Kugler. Natural hickory floors are striking, flowing through the home’s public spaces, as well as the kitchen and laundry room. Durable enough to stand up to this busy family’s wear and tear, the wood’s heavy striation is dramatic. “We wanted the contrast, and it’s still light enough for a family of boys to not totally destroy it,” the homeowner explains. Natural light saturates the great room, spilling through banks of tall windows and a series of clerestory windows, all Andersen
Windows Select, near the top of 15-foot ceilings. A cultured stone fireplace is one part of the focal point wall, which also features a built-in entertainment center with custom-built shelves flanking the big-screen TV and lower cabinetry concealing speakers and electronics gear. Another course of culture stone adds balance. Amish craftsmen in Harmony, Minn., designed and built the custom furniture in the living and dining rooms, as well as the kitchen cabinetry in subtly grained alder. “There’s no painted trim because we wanted the beauty of the wood to shine through,” he says. The hi-low level island provides prep space near the professionalquality gas range. The soft taupe glass 2-by-4-inch subway tile backsplash is accented by a glass mosaic design above the range. Granite counter tops are duplicated in the wet bar inset into a wall in the great room. An earthy Prairie color palette alternates throughout the home, including Sherwin Williams’ “Virtual Taupe” in the great room and “Kilim Beige.” The Amish-built Prairie-style bed is the focus of attention in the master suite, along with a coffered ceiling. They chose to install a larger shower with custom mosaic style rather than a tub, although there is a tub elsewhere in the home. Granite counter tops sparkle with a hint of silver.

This beautiful kitchen gets its glamour from a pair of elegant chandeliers, the soft, silvery sparkle in the “Summerhill” Cambria quartz and furniture-like detailing. Their kitchen is the heart of the home — “the place where everyone ends up hanging out,” the homeowner says, but it was outdated. Not to mention the jutting peninsula that awkwardly divided the space between the kitchen, dining and family room. After remodeling the family area, including custom cabinetry, it was evident the kitchen needed its own facelift. “I wanted a timeless, classic kitchen, and I feel like white is a timeless, transitional look that will last for years and fit with the traditional look of our home. I also was drawn to marble for counter tops, but it’s not durable or practical enough. We found the quartz that gives the appearance of marble, and it's perfect,” she explains. Although she knew her own mind and sought out the appliances, materials and accessories, she enlisted help from interior designer Amanda Moore of Benton Design Group for the design layout. “The layout was crucial to make use of every square inch and to make sure the work space was arranged for functionality and convenience, as well as fit the design aesthetics,” says the

homeowners. Moore says, “She wanted two islands that would work in the existing space, and we also had to incorporate the existing bar and buffet that was done several years ago. Fitting all that into the kitchen was a challenge without adding square footage, but we got it done.” The gray-black-silver-white mosaic backsplash is the perfect foil for new white Dura Supreme Cabinetry with modern, silver linear hardware. High-end appliances, including the Wolf dual range and Sub-Zero fridge dressed in furniture-like white panels, are ideal for the homeowners who love to cook. One quartz-topped island sits squarely in the kitchen-proper. Gray leather bar seats with nailhead trim tuck easily under the overhang. The second, custom-designed island by Fishsticks features thick pedestal legs painted deep gray and supporting a solid maple top. Bar stools provide additional seating. Finding the perfect chandeliers was the homeowner’s crowning achievement. “I wanted light fixtures that would be easy to clean in the kitchen. I can’t stand clutter or dirt. These are PVC chandeliers have drum shades and dangling crystals that are a modern touch — and make me smile.” H&G cv-hg.com

On the previous page Nailhead trim on leather bar seats and stools is just another touch of jewelry in this elegant kitchen. Opposite Clockwise from top: Inset above the professional-
quality range, mosaic tile in the classic combination of white, black and gray is still a contemporary touch. The turnings on substantial supports for the island suggest furniture, and the gray painted finish contrasts with the white kitchen cabinetry. Dangling crystals add a touch of bling to the drum chandeliers. A knife drawer for storage is a practical and useful addition to cabinetry.

verything about this remodeled kitchen says “We cook.” Any chef would be at home with the professionalgrade Wolf dual-fuel range with four burners and a French top for simmering and holding dishes, the room Viking stainless steel refrigerator and Bosch dishwasher. Self-professed foodies, the homeowners enjoy trying their hands at a range of cuisines, such as Mexican, Italian, Chinese and others using predominantly locally sourced ingredients. “We cook from scratch, make our own pasta, freeze and can vegetables, and we grow some vegetables on the deck. I love working in this kitchen. Not long ago I made 84 pounds of sausage,” enthuses the homeowner, who also keeps two beehives. Alex Von Ashen of Phelan’s Interiors in Cedar Rapids was the guiding force behind the remodeling project. His goal was to maximize functionality and efficiency within the kitchen’s existing footprint while incorporating beautiful but practical materials. “It’s definitely sleek and transitional with modern elements,” says Von Ashen. “Santa Cecelia” granite countertops, glossy subway tiles and faux travertine floor tile are to existing cherry wood cabinets. The existing island was expanded with the addition of a custom-built cabinet from 929 Design Inc. “Increasing the overhang allows for seating at the island,” Von Ashen explains. The mushroom gray bonded leather bar stools are comfortable and easy-care. Glowing
above the island are Kichler white frosted glass pendants in a warm bronze finish. Formerly a drop zone for oddsand-ends, the desk was transformed into a beverage center with an under-counter wine fridge. The interior designer describes the overall color scheme as “toneddown monochromatic. Good neutral colors warm the space and provide a wonderful background for display the original artwork collected by the homeowners.” Open to the family room and sunroom-converted-to-diningroom, the kitchen is the social hub for a family who loves to entertain. One ingenious touch Von Ashen came up with was a concealed power strip that runs the length of the cabinetry. “We can have 70 or more people at Thanksgiving – that’s a lot of Crockpots to plug in, so having that power strip is very handy,” says the homeowner. The master bath, powder room and an upstairs kids’ bath also underwent facelifts under Von Ahsen’s watchful gaze. A relaxing, sleek spa retreat was carved out of an outdated master by eliminating an L-shaped vanity. That provided space for the privacy of a lavatory closet, a single floating vanity with his-and-her sinks and much larger shower with horizontal porcelain wall tiles, river rock floor and elegant glass enclosure. “Lennon” granite sparkles on Bertch cabinets in birch with a sable stain. The German-made soaker tub was a special find to fit the space. Cultured stone provides the perfect, rustic-chic backdrop. H&G
Remodeling transformed the existing master bath into a warm and rich spa retreat complete with a Germanmade soaker tub.

LGC Homes builder Kyle Larson and his wife, Lori, decided to add a second story to their existing home. CVHG is following along with the project, and this is the latest installment. Demolition
Winter 2015

It seemed like a hard thing to do — demolish portions of the interior of a home Kyle Larson built from the ground up just seven years ago. “It was actually more exciting than difficult. It was fun to see, once everything was exposed, some of the notes and math and jottings on the framing underneath — where the lights would

go, how high the faucets needed to be … lots of stories,” says Larson. Although the process was noisy, everything moved along smoothly and quickly with preparation inside the house for demolition, followed by a week of gutting the interior. Then came the day when the existing roof had to come off to add the second-story framing and new roof. “The project didn’t seem real until that day. The roof was cut into sections and pulled off in 5, 6 or 7 big sections with a crane and it was demo-ed on the ground. It was amazing to see and went incredibly fast.” Until then, days had been clear and sunny. When the roof came off, the weather took a turn. “There were a couple of moments of absolute terror. The week we were at our most vulnerable,

as far as being exposed to the elements, was the wettest week we had this summer. We spent a lot of time tarping and protecting rather than working on the house.” At one point, water invaded the structure — “and everyone scrambled and got it taken care of. In retrospect, we were really aware of the vulnerabilities and curve balls that might come and were ready to exercise contingencies,” the builder explains. Larson was also surprised to discover that about half of the exterior fascia boards had been water-damaged and begun to rot. “That’s a real-life lesson in the importance of cleaning out your gutters,” he says. The crew is in the midst of rough-ins now, which has been made more challenging because, in addition to the new second story, major alterations are being made to the main living level, as well. Larson plans to split the projects apart and have separate contractors working on each project. “Then those two processes can overlap,” he explains. In the meantime, Larsen, Lori and their three young children are roughing it in the lower level. The space is tight, and laundry must be carried out the back of the house, walked around the side of the house and into the front of the house. “That’s probably the worst part, and that’s tied with trying to cook as the next worst thing,” he says, laughing. But the kids are having fun. “It’s like camping to them. Actually, it’s not as bad as I expected it to be. The one highlight is we’re closer together.” H&G

2 pints select or standard oysters, shucked with juice 4 tablespoons butter 3 cups milk ½ cup heavy cream 1 or 2 dashes hot sauce, optional Salt and pepper, to taste Minced parsley, sliced chives or green onions for garnish Drain oysters, reserve liquid. When oysters are cooked, slowly add hot milk mixture to oysters, stirring gently. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat. Serve in warm soup bowls, with your choice of garnish and oyster crackers. Chef note: Do not boil the milk and do not overcook the oysters. Oysters become tough if overcooked.

olidays can seem less full of the joy of the season and more about juggling responsibilities. It’s enough to dip into the eggnog a little early. But fear not. We can’t become your travel adviser or your extra hand, but we can save you the strife of picking out that delicious food item to bring to all of these holiday events. Crackers and dips won’t seem like a last-second, store-bought addition with these homemade appetizers. Each of these is easy to whip together, and all have the side benefit of making it look like you put in a lot more effort than you did. Steal the show without breaking a sweat.
creamy Blue cheese Dip
this dip not only has a delightfully strong blue cheese flavor, it turns a lovely shade of pale blue thanks to the veins of mold in the cheese. and it makes a great last-minute option, as the flavors don't need to chill to meld. mash, mix and munch! — alan 6 ounces blue cheese, crumbled (1 1/2 cups) 1/2 cup buttermilk, plus extra as needed 1 garlic clove, minced 1/3 cup sour cream 6 tablespoons mayonnaise 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper Using fork, mash blue cheese, buttermilk and garlic together in bowl until mixture resembles cottage cheese. Stir in sour cream, mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper. Add extra buttermilk as needed to adjust dip consistency and serve. Source: america's test kitchen
parmesan cream crackers
this recipe won me over just from its title alone; each individual word describes something tasty. when it was all done, all that was left to do was find a fun variation to keep the magic of this cracker going. i went with cheddar and mustard. — christinia 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, shredded (Disclosure: I buy the already shredded kind) 4 tablespoons butter 1/4 cup half-and-half, more as needed Salt and herbs, optional, for sprinkling on top Preheat oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix together flour, salt and cheese. Blend in butter using a pastry blender or fingers. Form a well in the center and add half-andhalf. Mix in dry ingredients with a fork or small spatula until dough forms together. If it’s still dry, add more half-and-half by the teaspoonful until dough holds together but is not sticky. Alternatively, mix together flour, salt and cheese in a food processor. Add butter and pulse until butter is chickpea-sized. Add half-and-half and pulse in one-second bursts until a dough forms, and adding more in teaspoonfuls as necessary.

Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface until about 1/4-inch thick, adding flour as needed. Roll dough onto the rolling pin and then roll out dough over the parchment paper-covered baking sheet. Use a pizza cutter to cut dough into squares, or rectangles, in uniform sizes as best as possible. Sprinkle on salt, herbs or other flavorings as desired. Bake until lightly browned, about 10 minutes. My oven didn’t quite brown evenly, so you may need to remove a few crackers at a time until all are done. Cool on a plate and serve warm or at room temperatures. Serves about 4, makes about 2 dozen crackers. Mustard Cheesy Crackers variation: Replace Parmesan with 1/2 cup cheddar cheese. Add 1 tablespoon dry mustard and 2 tablespoons mustard seeds with the cheese. Add 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard with the half-and-half. Follow directions as above.

i admit half of the fun of this recipe was taking the time to craft a nice, large round cracker and then smashing it into pieces. ok, i actually just broke it using my hands. But still, there was fun in the destruction, especially since i could still eat it after destroying it. — christinia

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons chopped rosemary, plus more for sprinkling (fresh is best but dried worked fine) 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup water 1/3 cup olive oil, plus more for brushing Additional salt, for sprinkling (optional, but tasty) Preheat oven to 450 F. Place a baking sheet in the oven, preferably on the middle rack. Mix together flour, rosemary, baking powder and salt. Make a well in the center, then add water and oil. Incorporate dry mixture using a fork or a small spatula, and then knead gently about a half dozen times until dough comes together. Divide dough into three balls; wrap two balls in plastic wrap. Roll out third piece on parchment paper into a thin 10- to 11-inch round. Brush the top of the dough with more oil, and sprinkle on rosemary and salt. Buffalo chicken Dip
i'm picky about my ranch; i prefer the hidden Valley buttermilk packet mix that you make with mayo and real buttermilk, but your mileage may vary. — alan 2 chicken breasts, cooked, or 1 rotisserie chicken 16 ounces cream cheese 1 cup ranch dressing 3/4 cup hot sauce 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Preheat oven to 350 F. Shred chicken into bite-sized pieces. Slice cream cheese into chunks. Mix all ingredients in oven-safe dish and cook for 20 minutes, stirring halfway through, or until dip is melted and creamy. (Can also be heated and then kept warm in a slow cooker.)
sesame BreaDsticks
Breadsticks were the hardest of the bunch, simply because you roll out each individual breadstick. i don’t think there’d be any harm in adding more sesame seeds throughout, but especially ahead of rolling them out individually. the pictures that came with the recipe suggested more seeds hanging from the dough. — christinia 2 teaspoons active dry yeast, or scant 1 package 3/4 cup warm water 1 tablespoon honey 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for rolling 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sesame seeds, divided 1 teaspoon salt In a large bowl, mix together yeast, water and honey. In a separate large bowl, mix together two flours, 2 tablespoons sesame seeds and 1 teaspoon salt. When yeast has activated, add oil to the liquid mixture. Incorporate dry mixture into liquid mixture until a dough forms. On a floured surface, knead dough for about 10 minutes, adding more flour as necessary. Roll dough into a rectangle. If space is tight, you can roll dough on a large baking sheet. Cover rectangle of dough with plastic wrap and let rest for an hour and a half. Preheat oven to 400 F. Brush a baking sheet or two with olive oil. When dough is ready, divide it in half and roll each half in 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds. Divide each half into 12 evenly sized pieces. Lightly oil a flat surface and roll dough pieces into 6-inch sticks. Place sticks 1-inch apart on the oiled baking sheets. Bake for 25 minutes or browned. Make yours the bestaccessorized home bar this holiday season with some great — and yes, useful — gear. Modern bartenders have all sorts of complicated gizmos they use to create cocktails, such as an immersion circulator for flash infusing. But do we cocktail enthusiasts really need the equipment to get into barrel-aging Negroni or concocting our own bitters or distillates? What you really need for the perfect cocktail hour is a mix of oldschool, new-school tools.

1 Jiggers: Update your collection with elegant bell-shaped and goldplated models. Why not show off while you’re doling out the spirits? $28. 2 Mixing glass: This Yarai etched, crosshatched mixing glass adds some elegance to your cocktail setup. 3 Cutting board: Made specially for bartenders, it’s just 8 by 12 inches with an extra deep well to catch juices and a slot that fits the Kuhn Rikon paring knife.

4 Ice tapper: This nifty tool used to be common in the 1950s and is now back. Made of plastic and stainless steel, it’s perfect for breaking ice with a whack right in your hand. 5 Cocktail shaker: Ron Arad designed this ultramodern “Chiringuito” in mirrored stainless steel for Alessi. It has a nifty lock on top and includes a strainer. 6 Cobbler shaker: How stylish is this one with its etched, crosshatched glass bottom and stainless steel top? $90. Stainless steel, $45 to $65.
7 The original swizzle stick from Mauritius, made from a special tree that grows branches perfectly perpendicular to the trunk. It’s used mainly for tiki drinks. You spin it back and forth between your palms to froth a drink. 8 Muddler: Give up that plastic nonentity in favor of a sleek bamboo model made by a fellow in Silver Lake or a fluted walnut one. 9 Mixing spoons: Go beyond utilitarian with these handsome spoons in gold and silver.
10 Hawthorne strainer: Koriko’s strainer has super-tight coils, eliminating double straining. “Barely anything gets through that’s not liquid,” says Mlynarczyk. This one comes in copper, gold or stainless. 11 Japanese double-mesh strainer: Not your typical conical strainer, this one is rounded, more like a bowl.

succulents the other holiday green Daigle, 31, who is one of the authors of the blog Needles & Leaves, fell in love with succulents when she got one as a Mother's Day gift. Two years ago, she and her sister-in-law started their blog about the many varieties, such as sedum, echeveria and graptopetalum. The appeal lies in their interesting shapes, colors and textures and in the fact that they don't require a lot of watering because they store water in their leaves and roots. Daigle told us a bit about succulents and shared a few photos of DIY holiday ideas from her book. There you can find detailed directions on how to create them.
Q
Why do succulents continue to be so popular?
Q
Where is the best place to buy succulents?
A: It makes sense financially. You can buy a bunch of flowers and make a gorgeous arrangement, but in a few days, it will be dead. If you get a gift of succulents, you can plant them later. Take a succulent-topped pumpkin; when the pumpkin starts to rot, remove the succulents and plant them in a pot so you can use them next season.
Succulents are having a long moment in the sun.
A: Try and go directly to a local nursery. You will get a better plant from them, and you can pick it out yourself.
For the past five years, the adorable and resilient plants have been appearing in Anthropologie catalogues, HGTV specials, in wedding crowns Do they really work for the holidays? and on tables at hip coffee shops and bistros. amaryllis as gifts
Winter 2015
68
As the winter holidays approach, the list of possible gift-giving occasions is long. There are hostess gifts for holiday parties. Then there are gifts of seasonal cheer or thanks for friends, family, teachers and other personal and professional contacts. Ideally we would choose an individualized gift for each person on the list. But in the reality of today’s busy world, that’s not always practical. Here’s one smart way to give each person on the list a thoughtful gift while staying sane and on budget: buy amaryllis bulbs for everyone — at
wholesale prices. Amaryllis are tropical bulb plants that produce outrageously flamboyant flowers. Their huge velvety blooms ride high atop tall tubular stems, creating splashy displays in a rainbow of colors. For all their beauty, they’re surprisingly easy to grow. While individual amaryllis bulbs can cost from $13 to $22 per bulb depending on the retailer, buying quality bulbs in bulk from a bulb wholesaler can make purchases of six to 12 and more an affordable option from sources such as Colorblends.com.

mantel
magic
A mantel is one of the easiest places to dress for the holidays. You can make a seasonal statement for Thanksgiving and with just a few switcheroos, transform it for Christmas. This faux fireplace and mantel was constructed from a beautiful old door frame purchased at an auction. Boards, a porch railing and old fence create the structure and mantel itself. The bottom board is covered with a subtle wrapping paper that fits with either holiday. A framed blackboard made from an old sofa-sized painting hangs above the mantel. These elements remain the same … it’s only the decorations that change to suit the season.
01
Decide on a theme and gather your objects and materials. Decide which will form the foundation of both Thanksgiving and Christmas motifs. Winter 2015

02
Layer for a lush look. Start with greenery or a garland and build from there, layer after layer, incorporating your favorite objects. Think three-dimensionally by jutting elements out or draping them away from the mantel.
03
Always have a focal point. Go whimsical, funky, vintage, sophisticated, natural, colorful — it’s up to you!
04
Look for balance, whether your design is symmetrical or assymetrical. We think assymetrical designs are more fun. Get the look Thanksgiving: We started with a stems of faux magnolia leaves, real tree branches and twigs, evergreen clippings, real pheasant feathers and bittersweet. Faux (you can use real) pumpkins are tucked into the arrangement, too. Decorative objects include tarnished silver pots and platters. The word “GIVE” has been stenciled on the blackboard. You can handletter the word or find and print a stencil from online sources. Christmas: Remove bittersweet and pumpkins from the mantel arrangement. Replace with white twigs, more evergreens, pine cones, etc. Change the blackboard to a Merry Christmas message and tack a trio of vintage Christmas stockings to the mantel. A red crepe paper rose completes the festive transformation. For more detailed photos, visit cv-hg.com
