Let the sunshine in! Sunshine, lemons, daffodils … yellow is the color of joy, playfulness and optimism. It’s a good color to use when a room needs a jolt, especially north-facing rooms and windowless spaces. Bright yellows are mood-lifters – Pantone Color Institute’s Leatrice Eisman said it’s like “Prozac in a paint can (and a lot less expensive).” On the exterior of a home or on the front door, yellow is instant warmth and curb appeal. In the kitchen, dining and family room, buttery, golden or custard tones are natural choices for areas where people congregate. Yellow visually opens up cramped and dark spaces such as hallways and foyers, casting a luminous glow that draws people in and through the space. Yellow and navy or yellow and gray are sophisticated combos. Aqua, yellow and white together really pops. Warm white or creamy white woodwork looks best with lighter shades of yellow. Bright whites make yellow look dingy. Canary yellow, marigold orange and fuschia or teal is an exciting look, and sunflower yellow pairs beautifully with chocolate brown or plum. And what could be fresher than yellow and green?

Dive into ... It’s the collective moniker we’ve come up with for those swimming pool, oceanic colors that tread water somewhere between aqua and green. These colors can be whisper-soft or splash around closer to the deep end. In fashion, designer Nicole Miller thinks these colors tie together the season’s prints. Designer Rebecca Minkoff includes sea foam, aloe and lake in her favorite palette. Pantone’s 2014 color palette includes “Hemlock,” a hip, soft green that works as a neutral and is stunning when synchronized with a pale periwinkle called “Violet Tulip” or the wispy “Placid Blue.” All of these shades have a beachy, coastal personality that appeals to us landlubbers.

Rosy glow Pinks are popping up all over home decor — the softer versions soothing and nurturing, the bright ones bouncy and vivacious.

Much of the debate about pink's worthiness in the home comes down to hues. There's dusty mauve, which dates a design scheme to the '80s. And there's bubblegum, which screams "frilly girl's room." With just those options, you might avoid pink altogether

The pattern in this sofette from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is feminine but not girly.

Warm pink light can be flattering, so designers have long employed tricks like painting lampshade interiors in those hues or switching regular bulbs for soft pink ones. Dusty, light and classic, pink adds subtle whispers of elegance, while vibrant, “statement” and sharp pinks can turn up the volume in a space. Eddie Ross, East Coast editor for Better Homes & Gardens, is a fan. "Pink is back, and it's all grown up. Paired with stronger hues like navy, chocolate or gray, pink looks sophisticated and surprising," he says. Ross suggests several ways to incorporate the color for different effects: "When you cover a sofa or chair in a light pink, it acts like a neutral. Swap out throw pillows for a completely different look. Light pink bedding looks great with just about any skin tone. Light pink linen mats in simple white frames with black and white photos look crisp."

Grandin Road’s Madeira chest in Hibiscus Pink.

Ceramic vase in crocodile pattern, Home Goods.

His favorite pink paint shades include Devine Color's Devine Poodle — "great on dining room chairs in a lustrous high gloss"; Benjamin Moore's subtle Affinity Proposal for walls; Farrow & Ball's Blushes — "a strong pink that would be stunning on a ceiling paired with cream and gray."

Robert Abbey’s ceramic accent lamp in Schiaparelli Pink.

Valspar's Rosario Ridge and Universe Quartz Pink are two others to consider. Sherwin-Williams' Spun Sugar and Malted Milk are as tasty-looking as their names, as are Peach Parfait and Fruit Shake from Benjamin-Moore. Combine pink accessories with contemporary pieces, or add a hit of surprise in a roomful of rustic, traditional or industrial elements. Pink looks great next to reflective and textured materials such as mirrors, metallics and velvets.

Shibori

An ancient art now revamped and revisited

A OriShibori tablecloth, runner and napkin on a table.

OriShibori leather wall hanging

From tablecloths to duvet covers, iPhone cases to wallpaper and startling calf-skin wall hangings, the ancient Japanese resist-dying technique of shibori has gone mainstream. Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Eileen Fisher, Levi's and innumerable fiber artists are breathing new life into the craft. "The stillness and beauty of it really centers me," said Oriana DiNella, who recently launched her own Web-based shibori line, including linen tableware, pillows and throws — and large leather wall hangings — all made to order and hand-dyed in organic indigo. The word comes from the Japanese shiboru, meaning "to wring, squeeze or press." The technique involves twisting, tying, crumpling, stitching or folding fabric — usually silk or cotton — in various ways, transforming the two-dimensional material into a sculptural, three-dimensional form. This sculptural shape is then traditionally dyed, originally using indigo, although a huge variety of colors and dyes are now used. Sometimes, the same fabric is then twisted in some other way and then dyed again. When the wrappings are removed, the folds and creases where the fabric resisted the dye form distinctive crinkled textures and patterns.

Today's incarnations are as different from their early Japanese predecessors as they are from the wild, tie-dyed pieces that became emblematic of the '60s and '70s. Rolls of shibori fabric produced by Eskayel.

OSMOND furniture Welcome Donny Osmond home.

To celebrate his 50th anniversary in show business, Donny Osmond decided to go home — to your home, actually, with a line of decorative accessories and furniture. He and his wife, Debbie, have launched the Donny Osmond Home Collection. The collection boasts more than 500 products in multiple categories, including case goods, upholstery, bedding, preserved botanicals, wall art, lighting, rugs, and even home fragrance and doorknobs. "It's something we have been talking about for many years," says the performer. The couple, who are parents to five grown children and have six grandchildren, wanted something they could do together well into their golden years. The philosophy behind the line is family centric, comfortable and transitional. The tagline for the collection is "Making Home and Family Number

One" – something the Osmonds have tried to do in their own lives. The Osmonds' personal taste leans toward casual and contemporary, which is reflected in many of their products. The couple enlisted the help of 12 manufacturers, including A & B Home for the occasional furniture and decorative items, Anji Mountain for the natural fiber area rugs, KAS for area rugs, Bougainvillea for the preserved botanicals, Ellison First Asia for the bedding, and Lamp Works for the lighting. They have even introduced a line of stylish fans. With that in mind, the Osmonds have kept the collection at a moderate price point. "I would say it will be reasonable, and most families can afford it," Debbie says. Many of the products can be purchased on Amazon, and a full list of retailers by zip codes is at www.donnyosmond.com.

Yin & yang

Warm, sunny days lift our spirits with soft breezes and a palette of delicate hues and fresh, saucy colors.

Yang At the other end of the spectrum, clean, clear bright colors add exuberant pops. "Americans seem ready to infuse their surroundings with optimistic, bold, mood-changing color," says Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance, in High Point, N.C.

Yin Think ballet- and watercolorinspired pastels; soft fabrics and sheer window treatments; and curvy furniture, often in traditional shapes but updated with modern fabrics and pattern.

Sometimes, all you need to give a room a spring facelift is to change out a few elements. New lampshades are an easy tweak. Seascape Lamps has punchy modern graphic designs for a wide range of fixtures, in on-trend plum and tangerine. A whimsical sketched garden on deep burgundy brings in a contemporary country vibe, and there are photo-printed lemons and cherries here as well.

Benjamin Moore's color of the year, Breath of Fresh Air, is a whispery blue-gray with a pensive yet positive quality. "We've detected a lighter touch — hints, tints of color," says Ellen O'Neill, Benjamin Moore's creative director. "They're colors that can make a room happy." Accent hues include pale peach and lavender. Quiet colors, yes, but not insipid ones. They're versatile, working as well with dressed-up rooms as with slouchier, more relaxed spaces. Daintier details, urban materials interpreted in elegant, classical shapes shows an overall softening of decor.

By rounding up high-profile bloggers Joy Cho of Oh Joy!, Jan Halvarson of Poppytalk and Kate Arends of Wit & Delight, the retailer is moving past the pool of traditional designers to a trendier group of tastemakers. "This is the first time we've partnered with social-media influencers," says Angie Thompson, a Target spokeswoman. "We see this as a great place to find talented up-and-comers, and today's top pinners are expert curators of style and design." The three collections, for both indoor and outdoor entertaining, will be launched throughout 2014. The first group, by Cho, debuted in March and features 40 serving pieces, decorating items, sparkly party hats, wall decals and paper plates, cups and napkins. The limited-edition collection sells for $3 to $25. The Los Angeles blogger, who has 13.6 million followers on Pinterest, is known for her bold colors and patterns. "The idea of the collection came from thinking about how I could put together a party instantly without having to craft everything from scratch, and save the time for making food and entertaining guests," Cho says. One of her favorite items is the silicone ice cube layer tray ($12), which was inspired by a project Cho wrote about in her blog. She created layered ice cubes using smoothies and juices in striped patterns. "That image got repinned 1.5 million times in several days," Cho says. "From this idea, we created an ice cube tray with scalloped edges for the collection."

LEFT Traditional floral wallpaper is contrasted with modern furniture and unexpected accessories. MIDDLE A successful mix of florals uses small, medium and large prints. RIGHT Update an industrial kitchen with floral wallpaper with modern scale and color from Graham & Brown.

Not long ago, any mention of floral upholstery or wallpaper brought back memories of 1980s cabbage roses, flowery shabby chic borders stenciled high on bedroom walls, and suburban homes designed to resemble precious cottages swathed in pink and green. But today’s patterns can be a refreshing, romantic antidote to the minimalist patterns that have dominated home decorating in recent years. The new florals have no rules. They’re fresh, fun – and more challenging to use successfully. What size? For a modern scale, avoid actual-size flowers on fabrics and wallpapers. Pick patterns in which flowers are bigger – 50 to 200 percent larger than life-size. The print’s eyepopping size contrasts with its modern style. Small-scale florals look modern in throw pillows or smaller items. Which pattern? Find a floral print that appeals to you. Try chinoiseries that

331 Kirkwood Avenue | Iowa City 351-4653 | Hours: M-F 10-5 www.designsurroundings.com

include figures and florals or flora and fauna. Or find a pattern that is more botanical – stems and leaves – than flower-filled. Designers such as Vivienne Westwood have created digitized, pixelated floral prints that mix traditional and modern styles, but even the most classic chintz fabrics can look great in a modern home. Mix florals with other prints for fun. Juxtapose masculine and feminine styles for a gender-neutral vibe. Where to use it? Floral patterns can work especially well on sleek, modern pieces of furniture. Rather than choosing a floral sofa that is rounded and tufted, use floral upholstery on a sofa with straight, clean lines. And rather than hanging floral draperies in a bedroom or choosing a floral bedspread, use solid-colored fabrics in those locations, then upholster the headboard in a bold, oversize floral. What colors? Look for unexpected palettes such as black and violet, springy greens and punchy pinks.

FIG & FROLIC

Going my way Ideas Use an adhesive gel such as ModPodge or Annie Sloan Decoupage/Transfer Gel to adhere the map to any surface – chairs, desk top, lampshades, just about anything.

Using a map of your hometown or state is fun. Just add a heart to express your love for it.

Flea markets, garage sales, eBay and auctions are great places to find vintage and newer maps and atlases. The coloring in maps are fantastic for decorating purposes. Large vintage school maps make fabulous wall décor and even window coverings. The uses for small maps are endless — from displaying in frames to decoupaging on furniture. It’s also fairly simple to transform an old globe into a light fixture or decorative bowl. Summer 2014

18

Handle old maps with care. They will be fragile and tear easily at the folds, especially the vintage ones.

Pennant garland is easy to make, just cut the pennants and string with ribbon, twine, or chain. 1} Cut out template and trace 4-5 onto the maps you want to use. Cut out. 2} Fold and glue on back. Be sure to crease edges crisply. 3} Measure where you want holes so the holes are even on both sides. 4} Use paper punch to cut holes. 5} String ribbon, twine or small chain through holes. 6} Add lettering if desired. We used adhesive mailbox letters for this project. Visit cv-hg.com for a how-to slide show

Our New Hours: Tuesday - Friday 11-6 Saturday 10-4 600 Baltimore Waterloo

Summer is the season for flea markets, auctions and sales, our favorite time of year! Here are some tips to get you started on the hunt, too! Before the hunt Keep the Sunday & Wednesday newspapers. Comb through garage sale classified ads and the business section for auctions. Highlight the ones that interest you. Save and take with you on the hunt. Other good sources are Veridian's Swap Sheet at veridiancu.org and Craigslist.

Hunt day Clean out the largest vehicle you can find. Take along a few boxes, old newspapers and old blankets to protect your purchases. Include bunge cords and rope to tie down your trunk or secure items, along with a large tote bag or rolling collapsible grocery cart for small purchases, sunscreen, bug spray and umbrella. Measure your doors, opening width of truck, length of truck bed, etc. You don’t want to buy something you can’t fit in your vehicle.

Dress appropriately Layers, comfortable shoes, a ballcap, sunglasses and a crossover bag so your hands are free.

Inside the bag you’ll need: Two to four checks removed from your checkbook for auctions/estate sales (you won’t need the whole checkbook); debit or credit card (make sure there is not an upcharge for using a card); driver’s license; cash (small bills) for concession stand, garage sales, flea markets; cell phone (smartphones are handy for checking value of items or taking photos;) notebook and pen to jot down notes and track purchases; tape measure; small magnifying glass.

Don’t be timid If you want something, hold your card up high and leave it up until you’ve reached your price limit. Communicate clearly and decisively with the auctioneer. They’ll appreciate it.

Say Welcome! Painting the front door a color that packs a punch is one of the quickest and easiest ways to change a house’s look and help it stand out from the rest. “It’s the difference between choosing classic red or something that has a little bit of fuchsia in it — something more like the color you love,” says Kate Smith, a Newport, R.I., color consultant. “Just that little bit of color can give you the lift that makes everything look better.” Smith — whose job includes advising everyone from paint companies to the film industry on color choices — says homeowners are making the right move by making bland front doors bold. As the entryway to your home, a front door should be an attention-getter, she says. “You want it to be the focal point,” she says. Emphasizing the front door can “improve the look of the entire house.”

Smith tells people selling their homes that if they “can’t do anything else, put some time and energy into your front door.” Smith advises choosing a front-door color that jibes with your home’s other features, starting with the style and color of the roof. The colors of fixed features, such as

window grids, as well as trim and shutters should also be considered. So should a home’s architectural style. Smith says the most popular front-door colors among homeowners who want to make a statement are tropical blues, vibrant oranges, violet, mustards and plums. Those who want to perk things up but stay more subdued are choosing blues a notch brighter than navy, warm reds and classic grays, she says.

alm, comfortable, natural. Those three words easily describe the stylish tranquility of Joan and Kirk Ney’s newly constructed home. The neutral color scheme — with paint and stain names like “Alpaca,” Requisite Gray” and “Willow” — flows effortlessly from one room to another, all inspired by a photograph. “It was a photo of a simple stack of beautiful, pale afghans. I saw it and said `this is it, this is the look.’ The colors are clean and casual but cozy, and it’s a palette that suits our lifestyle. A neutral palette can be boring, so I also added lots of texture to create interest,” said Joan. As a special events planner, Joan is known for staging romantic, imaginative (and highly detailed) weddings and other events, but her personal style is uncluttered. “I like simple lines and a bit of sophistication. We also like to entertain, and we want our guests to feel a wonderful level of comfort and welcome.” Kugler Construction built the 4,200-square-foot ranch-style house, more square footage than in the couple's previous two-story traditional home. Midcentury Modern touches are scattered throughout, and the Neys are thrilled by the home’s contemporary aesthetics. “Every detail was carefully thought-out because we wanted to get it right. We wanted the first floor to be self-contained — everything we need to age in place, including a main-floor laundry,” Joan said. Working on the project was rewarding, said Bill Kugler Jr.. “It’s always challenging, but it’s also fun

helping a client realize their dream home. It turned out beautifully.” Tall windows let the sunshine in, and French doors with transoms and the 8-foot-tall custom front door are well-suited to home’s 10foot ceilings. Joan worked with Rosie Rekers’ Blinds and Designs firm to install minimal window coverings, including Hunter-Douglas Silhouette blinds in the living area and room-darkening, pleated shades in the master bedroom and bathroom. Hardwood floors throughout the main floor resemble the color of driftwood gathered off a California beach. The look was achieved by craftsmen from FishSticks Millwork who applied an ebony stain over the maple floor, then let it settle into the grain before wiping it off. “We love that natural appeal, and it adds to the casual, relaxed ambiance.” But the home is more than a look; it's a feeling. “We wanted everything in the house to be what makes us feel good. My husband says it just feels good to come home and relax.” In the main living space, the seating area is anchored by a sandgray sectional upholstered in finely woven boucle. Faux fur throws tossed on the sofa and a nubby rug add more layers of texture, striking a nice balance with the linear fireplace. The fireplace gives off a modern vibe tucked into a wall that has the look of limestone, but actually was faux painted by artisan Julie Petersen. On the same wall, a credenza with fashionable crystal knobs appears to float off the floor.

Cobalt blue glass bowls and decanters, Oriental blueware ginger jars and other accessories pop against the pale tones. “I have a passion for blue, and luckily my husband likes it too. I’ve loved blue since I was a little girl. I find such peace in the color. I also like to mix metals — silver, gold, copper — with the blue, and it all works together,” she says. Accessories have been pared down for a cleaner look. “Guests come in and enjoy the uniqueness, but I also want guests to feel comfortable. I always remember what my dad told me — ‘Don’t build anything where a man in overalls can’t come in and sit down.'” Furnishings are a chic mix of old and new pieces, such as the pair of off-white sofas accented by T-cushioned, wood-framed club chairs upholstered in Ethan Allen’s “Vernon Indigo” cotton blend fabric. Tufted and clothed in blue leather, the long ottoman is a stylish contrast to the round glass-topped coffee table. On one wall, a large wood cabinet houses that new big-screen TV. Set at an angle, the great room fireplace wall is warm and homey — and visible from the kitchen, constructed with bricks salvaged from tearing down the home’s outer wall. A wood mantel supported by corbels is imposing, but fits the scale of the space, built by lead carpenters Dale Gosse and Samir Kajtezovic. Removing the outside wall and changing a support beam opened the kitchen. Existing cherry cabinets were refaced, and new cabinetry and granite countertops installed. A peninsula and bar chairs visually expand the space. Underfoot are oak floors prefinished in antique cherry. Copper pots hang from original beams and an island provides additional work space. “I love to cook, and this is a cook’s kitchen — very functional,” the owner notes. The nearby laundry room was reconfigured to fit a pantry and extra sink for washing up after a day spent gardening. Slate tiles are practical and pretty against the blue-painted cabinetry and blue-flecked granite countertop. H&G

OUTDOOR LIVING

Outdoor chic

E

arthy hues that blend into the landscape tend to dominate the outdoor furniture market. Understated woods, metals and cushions are easy-to-incorporate neutral elements. But outdoor spaces also offer the chance to be more adventurous than we are inclined to be indoors. Incorporating pops of color and lively looks give people a chance to make a statement with flair and personality. "Vibrant color has dominated the home furnishings arena since last fall, and after an unusually cold winter, the time's ripe for bright color to become a focus for our outdoor spaces. Color is a great energizer," says Jackie Hirchhault, marketing vice president for the American Home Furnishings Alliance, based in High Point, N.C. “Furniture manufacturers and retailers understand that people want to make the most of every inch of living space in and around their homes, and outdoors is a natural place to cultivate. The variety of style, size and price points available is so great today that everyone can create a space ideal for how they prefer to spend their time. Cirrus Fire Pit by Agio

OUTDOOR LIVING

Transform your backyard into an oasis

W

hether your goal is to entertain, exercise or simply have a great place to chill out during the heat of the summer, a swimming pool can enhance an outdoor lifestyle, says Rick Whiteaker, president of Pool Tech, the Midwest’s award-winning pool builder based in Cedar Rapids. It’s a luxury more people are looking at as they move outdoors to create living spaces that include spas, outdoor kitchens and fireplaces. “Some people really view a swimming pool as part of the backyard environment, and there’s a wider market who just want an affordable pool, properly placed and installed, a nice feature to enjoy,” Whiteaker said. “Technology has come a long way, and today’s pools are easy to maintain and convenient to operate.” Whether the pool is rectangular, free form or looks like a water feature found in nature, it pays to do some research before diving in. Know how you want to use your pool, consider the climate, research types of inground pools, including shapes, materials, designs, cleaning systems, artistic touches, etc. Set a realistic budget before taking the plunge, and don’t forget about insurance. Find out how a swimming pool affects your homeowner’s policy. Then seek out a seasoned and reputable pool builder, Whiteaker said. “The right professional can take your swimming pool from the ordinary to the extraordinary. You can’t just plop in a pool,” he explained. “Beyond what it looks like, a professional is going to look at the site, the location for the pool and determine what’s going on underground, the surrounding landscaping and the environmental effects of a pool.” A professional will properly design and install the pool and address such concerns as safety, including pool covers that can encapsulate the pool to keep unsupervised children out and other safety features beyond those that may be required by local codes. Energy-efficiency and environmental features, along with maintaining your investment, also are important. Whether it’s a cascading waterfall, a boulder-filled naturalistic setting, slide or fountain, don’t skimp on the features you think will make the perfect pool. “No one is really buying the swimming pool. They’re buying the experience, the ambiance, the outdoor environment," Whiteaker said.

Transform your porch into an inviting summer hang-out. It’s easy to create extra living space outdoors with some inexpensive furnishings, pretty fabrics and new or “found” accessories. My screened-in back porch blurs the line between indoors and outdoors. The space is large enough to be divided into separate functions for lounging and dining. For seating, I started with my existing outdoor furnishings, a weather-resistant rattan with neutral fabric, and anchored it with a durable outdoor rug. A mix of plain and patterned pillows adds personality. I chose a patterned fabric in predominately blues and greens, then pulled colors like aqua from the fabric for additional pillows. I also change the pillows to reflect the seasons: Colors become more intense and deeper in fall. Thanks to a vintage Coca-Cola cooler as inspiration, red is my impact color. I love that pop of color because it’s happy and cheerful, and

that’s how I want the porch to feel. My favorite accessories are “found” and vintage pieces. Old baskets are filled with books and games and an old sugar canister holds a flower arrangement, for example. A length of burlap tied around a coffee can becomes a vase, and pitchers can be used for flowers or other items. A pretty bowl can be filled with Scrabble tiles or seashells gathered on vacation. Mercury glass adds sparkle and depth to the setting. An old attic ladder is the perfect place to hang blankets to cuddle under on cool evenings. Just for fun, I’ll hang letters to form a word, depending on my whim. The fireplace dates from the 1970s and was a find for $10. I love having the mantel to display things. It’s fine to mix new with old, rustic with elegant – that’s what gives a space its style – and it doesn’t have to cost a lot either. I love finishing off the porch with twinkling strands of lights and a whimsical chandelier.

arol Ellison calls gardening her "therapy." Although she and husband Carl have gardened at their home for about 16 years, and Carl had brick paths laid throughout the yard as a birthday gift, gardening became her real hobby after retirement. Then came a battle with cancer, and "that changes your perspective," she said. Ellison turned to her garden as a way to stay strong and surround herself with beauty. Carol Ellison's favorite colors — pink, purple and chartreuse — are liberally scattered throughout the landscape, the setting for their granddaughter's wedding. Arranged in a series of beds, borders and garden "rooms," the garden is home to numerous roses, including David Austins and pink Knock-Outs, as well as classic "Annabelle," "Nikko Blue" and other hydrangeas, cranesbill geraniums, daylilies, coral bells, spiderwort and perennials too numerous to name. Sometimes she’s amazed by the variety of garden rooms that have evolved in her backyard. Forty years ago, the yard was outfitted with a mini baseball diamond for the neighborhood kids and a balance beam for their daughter. “I don’t have any formal training. I just do what I like, and I like more of an English-garden look. I tend to stay away from yellows in favor of blues, violets, purples, pinks,” the gardener explains. The apricot-pink “Abraham Darby” with its strong fruit fragrance is one of her favorite David Austin roses. “I love the old rose appearance of the David Austins, and the fragrance is wonderful. But as I get older, I find myself planting more Knockout roses because they’re easier to care for,” she says. In the spring she applies Epsom salts around the base of her rose bushes “to strengthen the stems” and fertilizes with a rose systemic product. Ellison also is an aficionado of hydrangeas. Her "Nikko Blue" has thrived in her backyard, although it’s not known for Midwestern hardiness. “It is a little more touchy than most hydrangeas,” she acknowledges. In recent years, she’s planted a “Limelight” hydrangea “that has a beautiful lime color that fades to soft white and just seems to bloom and bloom. The color blends easily in the

Combining edibles with ornamentals can maximize garden space and create some lovely, productive pots. Make either one the focus, and experiment with color combinations, foliage and textures. Look for compact-growing or dwarf forms of favorite vegetables. For best results, match light and water requirements. Make sure pots have plenty of room to grow. Try bright red double petunias, red-and-white bicolor petunias and “Fairy Tale” eggplant, a long, striated, compact veggie. Red or purple salvia looks fun poking through a bushy pepper plant. Plant yellow marigolds around determinate-type red or yellow patio tomatoes. Beyond color, think about foliage. A planting bowl filled with frilly lettuces is a conversation starter. Tuck herbs like basil into pots with tomatoes for a pesto garden. Ornamental kale and sweet-potato vines spilling over the edge of a large, deep pot filled with purple fountain grass is lovely.

My kids like helping me in the garden, but I can imagine the time when they get older and think it's too much like doing chores and not any fun. How can I keep them engaged?

Kids will learn to love and appreciate nature and the importance of being selfsufficient and responsible. But mostly, it should be the fun. Give them their own “plot” in the garden, then let them pick what to plant. Let them paint and decorate a sign with their name to display in the garden so it really belongs to them. Bedding plants will yield quicker rewards now, but seed starting can be an exciting activity. Undoubtedly weeding is a chore few of us really like doing. Try to find a way to make it fun and educational, too. Kids will learn patience as plants develop and bloom or produce vegetables, but the pay-off is worth the wait.

Molasses-Bacon Pork Tenderloing with Smoked Tomatoes

ENTERTAINING / MEAT old grill masters will be sizzling this summer! Pairing the right spice blend and wood flavor with your favorite foods takes grilling to new heights, while breads of all shapes, sizes and origins offer new flavors and textures for grillers to explore. Personalized condiments are shaking up the traditional burger, hot dog and sausage toppers. Grill fresh fruits for a healthy, smoky-sweet dessert to polish off the meal. And for fun, add grilled fruits to summer beverages like sangria and iced tea. “Now everyone can discover a few easy, new tricks to bring these tasty and trendy flavors to their outdoor meals,” said Chef Mark Garcia of the McCormick Kitchens. “For example, grilling lemons before adding to lemonade imparts a smoky flavor to a classic summer beverage. And using pecan wood chips on the grill brings a sweet, nutty intensity to chicken, pork or vegetables and pairs beautifully with a molasses-bacon seasoning.”

WHAT'S NEW 1

Combine some of your kids’ work with professional pieces and family photos in a montage for the family room, dining room, play room or hallway.

2

Commission your child to create a finger painting for an eye-catching frame.

3

Display the art in groupings. Lay out pieces on the floor so you can visualize how they fit together. Snap photos of various arrangements so you can compare them.

4

Select one really “important” finger painting and frame it as beautifully as you would professional artwork.

5

Buy inexpensive frames and paint them in the same color palette for cohesion. You can find precut mats for a more professional look or use construction paper or foam core to create your own mats.

6

For fun, string wire or cord between two hooks and let kids pick and chose what they want to hang up. Use binder clips.

7

Give the framed artwork as gifts to family members represented in the drawings.
