XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ASSISTED LIVING
How to Choose Assisted Living and values to find out what it considers to be important. Is it a for-profit or not-for-profit organization? Something specific to ask about is whether someone is actually in the building 24/7, or simply on call. Find out how they handle emergencies with residents, day or night.
When living at home alone is no longer a viable option, assisted living provides appropriate care while still allowing a person to maintain independence, dignity and choice – all important aspects to us throughout life. When you need to look for an assisted living community, there are many things to consider. Start with an online search for assisted living providers in your area, and make a list of those that you think might be a good fit. Be sure to visit each one so you can see it, meet staff and residents, and ask questions. COSTS Cost typically comes to mind right away and it is certainly something to ask about. Be sure you are comparing apples to apples
among different providers. Each one might figure rent a little differently. Ask if the monthly cost includes meals and any health services. Is medication management included? Or is everything a la carte? An awareness of how fees are charged will help you avoid surprises later. Special services might be an additional cost. While a clear understanding of expenses is beneficial, there are several other aspects to keep in mind. QUALITY OF CARE Ask about the director’s credentials. What is the length of their experience in assisted living? Is it locally owned and operated, or a franchise with far-away owners? Ask about the organization’s mission
2
BUILDING APPEARANCE Take a close look at the grounds and building(s). Are they clean and wellmaintained? Is the climate appropriate? Is there natural light and easy access to the outdoors? You want to live in a home that has a cheerful environment. REFERENCES The quality of care and satisfaction of current and former residents will also figure prominently into your decision. Go out of your way to meet residents and family members. Ask for honest opinions about the staff, amenities and accommodations. LEISURE SERVICES Inquire about activities for the residents. Also, take a look at their calendar of events to get a better idea about the lifestyle of people living there. Make a list of things that are important to you. If you
pursue gardening, crafting or other hobbies, look for a place that lets you continue these hobbies with ease. People who enjoy staying active and exercising can find a community that has an exercise room or secure place to walk. Gregarious people need a community that that allows plenty of opportunity for socializing. TRANSPORTATION Does the assisted living community provide transportation for residents? If so, you want to find out the extent of bus availability, i.e., for medical appointments, shopping and/or leisure activities in the community. Is it included in your monthly fee, or an additional expense? LEVELS OF CARE It’s important to think about the future. Find out how additional health needs could be accommodated, or whether a move would be required. Ideally, you want to find a place that can take care of additional care needs. Moving into assisted living doesn’t have to be stressful or unpleasant. With research and diligence, you can be confident that you or your loved one will be well cared for, while still being able to enjoy life.

FIND WHERE TO SHOP It’s Important to find the place you are comfortable with when making these important purchases. While the internet can be an important tool for your research, a local shop provides you with the details you will need when making your purchase. Buying local also allows you to see and feel the product you are about to purchase. A local shop will also offer knowledge and assistance with any warranty situations should they arise.
4

How to Choose an Auto Body Shop
Does your vehicle have dents and dings, scratches and bumps, or even more serious damage? Anyone who has experienced a car accident knows that it can be a calamitous event. Once you have dealt with any resulting health issues, you will have to contend with damage to your automobile. Whether your car has experienced significant damage or simply a scratch, you will want to find an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable. A good auto body shop will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are an
unfortunate, but necessary, part of life for most people. Once you have a list of companies, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. A good source for finding an auto body shop is your local newspaper. Local businesses advertise and many times you can find special deals to help save you money. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone and ask pertinent questions. How long have they been in business? What are their specialties? How soon can you bring your vehicle in for an inspection? Ask to set up an appointment for an inspection, which should be free, and further investigate the business. Look around their lobby. Is it clean? Do they have their license and any awards or certificates posted? Do they care enough about their customers to offer
6
reading material, coffee or water? Consider their prices. Are they comparable to other body shops? While you want to find that deal, remember, cheaper is not always better. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don't match, look elsewhere. You will not save
money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Oftentimes, there are hidden damages that cannot be detected until repair work begins on the vehicle. Finding an auto body shop may not be the most pleasant business because it usually means your vehicle has suffered some kind of damage. But finding the right shop will make the experience much more pleasant and you will be happy with the repairs. Especially if you find the right shop that knows how to repair your vehicle so it looks the same as before, or even better.

How to Choose a New Car Dealer
Purchasing a new car can seem like a daunting experience, especially if you have never done it before. Finding a dealer you can trust will defuse anxiety. Inexperienced car shoppers are often intimidated by the cost, the process and even dealers who may try to overcharge them. It doesn't have to be this way. The whole experience
will become a simple, lowpressure transaction if you find the right dealership. Good car dealers will make the entire process of buying a car simple and straightforward. CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAR Selecting the right automobile for your needs and lifestyle is essential. Large families may need an SUV or van to fit everyone into the
8
vehicle. But college students buying their first car would probably be happy with a compact car such as coupe. The savings on gas will help ease your finances while you are in school. Along with the car model, there are numerous options to consider. You might get a car with a navigation system, moonroof, GPS and satellite radio, just to name a few. If you have to commute long distances, think about purchasing a smaller car with a good MPG (miles per gallon) rating. Hybrid cars can help you save money on gas. Anyone in a cold climate might look at various vehicles with either all-wheel or frontwheel drive. CHOOSE THE DEALER Once you have settled on a car model, check into area car dealers. Finding several dealers who sell the brand of car you want is usually best. The competition for your business will help you negotiate the total cost of your car. Make sure to look for current discounts on the car
you want. During specific times of the year, you might be able to get a great deal on a new car. It is particularly true during year-end sales. Of course, you should testdrive a car before purchasing it. When you begin your negotiations, remember that price isn't everything. Service should play a role as well. You are building a long-term relationship with this dealer and manufacturer. It is not worth getting a less-thansatisfactory experience just to save a few dollars. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the dealership. Buying a car is an expensive, long-term commitment. It is always better to find a car salesperson who is informative and friendly. It will make your transaction as simple and comfortable as possible.

How to Choose an RV
A recreational vehicle (RV) is a great investment for family fun and vacations. Purchasing a recreational vehicle can be a fun experience, but it can also feel overwhelming. It is more complicated than buying car. After talking with a dealer, many first-timers sometimes end up with more questions than answers. With some research and help from other RV owners, you can find an RV that is right for you. Your first step in purchasing an RV is to ask yourself what you would like to do in your recreational vehicle. Are you using it to travel the country? What sizes and styles do you prefer? Are you partial to
purchasing a new or used RV? Consult resources to answer these questions. Use the Internet to browse RV brands and styles. There are numerous message boards for RV owners that contain useful information. The best way to learn about recreational vehicles is to speak with owners themselves. If people in your social network own an RV, ask about their vehicle. Look through the interior; examine various options so you can understand what is available. Another factor is size. If you are only planning to use it sporadically, then size might not be an issue. But if you plan on living out of the vehicle for
10
extended periods of time, then a larger RV may be more comfortable. Some RV parks have restrictions on size, so be sure to verify what sizes are generally acceptable. Additional features can make your ride enjoyable. Think about whether you would like a full-service kitchen or plasma TV. Choose items that would make your trip as comfortable as possible. Once you have become more acquainted with the marketplace, start visiting RV dealers. After all your research, you should be able to speak with the salespeople clearly and confidently. If you plan on purchasing
a new RV, look for a dealer who offers a factory warranty. Dealers who sell used RVs should also give you a factory warranty along with a used vehicle report. Potential RV buyers don't usually think to ask for a used vehicle report. However, you should know the history of your used RV before purchasing it, as it could have had extensive damage. Incentives such as free upgrades or a good financing rate may be enticing, but you should always be skeptical about the deal that comes with them. Try to bring a fellow RV owner with you to the dealership. Most people are happy to share their thoughts and experiences with you. It is a good way to ensure you are getting a fair deal. The best dealers have an on-site service department or contracts with reputable RV repair shops. Some RV repairs are specialized and different from regular vehicles. You will need a service shop that will accept your warranty in the event your RV is ever damaged. With a little effort and time, you will find a fantastic deal on an RV best suited for your needs. Then, you can spend time in your vehicle enjoying the scenery.

CARPET CLEANING
How To Choose A Carpet Cleaner have every right to ask questions about the ones doing the work.
Dirt. Pollens. Chemicals. Asphalt. Dust mites. Dander. Bacteria. Air pollution….. These are just a few named contaminants that are commonly found in the average carpet. (Maybe even Aunt Edna’s spilled gravy.) Yuck! What’s possibly lurking in your carpet? Knowing what could be in your carpet can become a mystery that even Matlock himself can’t crack. Often times “Where did that stain come from?” is a common question among homeowners, especially when there’s kids and pets involved. Interrogation seldom works, as even the guiltiest of children easily shoot accusations down with a truckload of angelic-faced denial that would even make Super Nanny a believer. Fortunately when you choose the right carpet cleaning company, joy can once again be had by all. Parents breathe a less polluted sigh of relief. Children cheer and the sounds of guiltladen chains falling off begin filling the hallways. Normalcy and
peace is restored. However- choosing the wrong company can, and has, become the source of many ales. Horror stories are commonly passed around like folklore and can often times become crippling in the decision process. This is why it’s extremely important to make an intelligent, informed decision. There are several things to consider before inviting a carpet cleaner to your home. In this article, we’ll cover a few of the key factors. 1. Does the staff look and act like: A) Charles Manson or B) Matt Damon? The appearance and demeanor of the floor-cleaning company will tell you a lot about the quality of their services. Because there are few regulations on cleaning businesses, the professionalism of each company can vary widely. It is essential to find a company that does honest, quality work. After all, you will be bringing them into your home, so you
12
2. Cleaning Process and procedures There are a couple main processes for cleaning carpets these days: Dry and Steam. Ask them about their methods. How well do they know their own methods? You should be able to understand why they prefer one process over another, and why it is best for your home. Shaw Industries, the world’s largest carpet manufacturer, solely recommends the steam cleaning method for maintaining your carpets. As a matter of fact, using other methods could void your carpet’s warranty. 3. Angry Ranters or Raving Clients? When you speak to cleaning companies, ask them for references from previous customers. The truth is that anyone can brag on their own company all day long. But do the ones that matter most (customers!) agree with them? It just makes more sense to hear what others have to say based on their own experiences. You can also ask people in your social network about carpet cleaning companies. If they have found a great service, ask for the contact information and get a quote for your own home. 4. Best Value vs. Cheapest Price “You get what you pay for” is a statement that comes up frequently. While there are exceptions to this statement, it’s always something to keep in mind
on your quest. You want a great cleaning experience provided by a well-groomed technician who does immaculate work? Chances that you’ll find it for the cheapest price around is somewhere around zero. However- Just because a company is on the expensive side doesn’t mean they’re any good either. Truth is there is a lot of expensive junk out there. They may be expensive, but do they create value in their process? What’s important to you? Find the best match for the things that matter most to you and price suddenly becomes a little less relevant. 5. Written Guarantees A great cleaning company will have policies in place for protecting your home and guaranteeing their work. If spots return or if you are unhappy with the results, they should send someone back to clean your carpets again at to correct it for free. High-quality companies guarantee their work. Period. If the prospective cleaning company has written guarantees, creates great value for the money, can prove their worth with raving clients speaking for them, has a thorough cleaning process approved by carpet manufacturers, and the work is performed by a cleancut technician with a great personality, it’s a good indication you’ve found the right place. Now the only burning question that remains is- once you have clean carpets, do you let anyone back on them?

EDUCATION
How To Choose a Private School
Parents send their children to private schools for many reasons. Ultimately, it is because parents want what is best for their children. Many families believe a faith centered, private school helps their children succeed. Educational value is important and private school can be worth the financial investment. Generally discipline is not a problem in private schools. There are two main reasons: most private schools provide a structured learning environment and secondly, codes of conduct by which private schools operate, are enforced. Dr. Dale Monroe, Cedar Valley Catholic Schools’ Chief Administrator states, “If a student misbehaves or breaks the rules in our system, there will be consequences. This is a top priority for our families and supports the principle of self discipline.” Choosing a private school is an important decision and a family investment in a child's future. Keep your focus on the "right fit" for your child. When visiting a school, look for areas and programs that the school values. Be sure to visit classes and speak with teachers and staff. Ask questions. Does the school seem to be the kind of place your child will
thrive? Are teachers committed to developing your child's talents? Do teachers and staff seem committed to helping children learn? Private schools expect parents to be actively involved in their child's education. The concept of a three way partnership is important in most private schools and the degree of participation and involvement will depend on a parent's schedule. Ask what opportunities and ways parents can be involved. Is there a parent organization? Participation depends on your availability, talents, and experience. The important thing is to observe and see where you as a parent can fit in. If the school needs an organizer to run the annual auction, then help out as a committee member before offering to take on the major responsibility. If your child's teacher asks you to help chaperone a field trip, that's an opportunity to be a team player. Private schools enroll the entire family, not just the child. Evaluate your child's educational goals and needs. Are there physical or learning disabilities or behavioral issues? Has your child voiced an interest in science, math, technology, athletics or fine arts?

Now, consider what your ideal school would offer. Make a list of these features. What does the curriculum offer? Is technology implemented in the daily course work? Are students being prepared for college? What kinds of special programs are available? Does the school offer advanced placement or college credits? What opportunities will your child have - is the school a "Leader in Me" designated school? Is there a service learning requirement? Will your child have to volunteer in the community as part of class course work? Columbus Senior, Robert Hart, wrote on his service reflection, “Without realizing it, I had grown into one of the people I so admired as a child....the students (I tutored) with free, adventurous minds and open hearts, listened to me. I made a difference for them.” Are there transportation considerations? Some private schools allow public school busing options. Are extracurricular activities, such as sports, band, art, drama, or academic clubs important? Look at the schools' websites. Most sites have information as well as policy summaries. Look at photo galleries, social media, and videos. Some sites even give virtual tours. Is there extended child care? Is there a preschool program? Public schools have to keep religion out of the classroom. Private schools can teach religion according to the mission and philosophy of the school. Is faith important to your family values? Does the school accept children of all faiths and what religious rites are included in the school day? Are students allowed to opt out or is there another option? One of the biggest reasons parents consider private school is because most have smaller class sizes.
Teacher engagement and one-onone instruction can be critical in the "tween" years. Most students receive individualized instruction and many excel academically. Ask for referrals from other parents, teachers, guidance counselors, family, and friends. Contact the school and make an appointment to take a tour. Be aware of how you are treated by the staff members. Were they friendly, helpful, and respectful? Try to meet as many of the staff and teachers as possible. Evaluate the atmosphere of the school. How did the students behave? Most importantly, will your child and your family feel comfortable there? Is it easy to picture your child spending time there? If your child accompanies you, ask him or her about the school. Children often have special insights and reactions to environments. Is there is a uniform requirement? Many private schools require students wear uniforms. This appeals to parents who want their children to dress appropriately, not provocatively. On average, schools with a uniform policy see a significant decrease in bullying. After completing your tours, you will begin to see which school is the best fit for your child. At this point, parents can better understand the financial investment of private education. This will also allow you to determine how to fit tuition into your budget. Blessed Maria and Sacred Heart parent Kim Reiter reflected, “All children deserve a quality education that will prepare them for higher education or the workforce. All parents deserve a return on the investment in their most precious assets. I’m willing to make sacrifices now that will pay off in my daughters’ futures.”

EDUCATION
How to Choose a University Choosing the right college or university can feel overwhelming. After all, your decision will have longterm ramifications. The college or university can help you achieve your goals or leave you lying in the dust with a huge tuition bill. Selecting a strong college with an excellent reputation will give you a firm foundation to pursue your dream life. Careful planning and thought will help you feel confident that you are making the right choices for your life. LARGE OR SMALL SCHOOL? Ask yourself if you learn better in an intimate setting or a large classroom. Some schools have a small student-to-teacher ratio while others have auditoriums filled with students listening to a lecture. As you begin your research, be sure to look for information on class sizes and student population. AREAS OF SPECIALTY The reputation of a university or college is very important. It can open or close doors in your career. Most colleges are renowned for a handful of majors. Does the learning institution specialize in your area of interest? Attending a prestigious university or college will give you opportunities and resources. The possibility of employment after graduation also dramatically improves when your school has good name recognition.
MINORS Once you have decided upon a major, think about your other areas of interest. Many colleges offer students the choice of adding a double major or minor to their plan of study. Even if you are going to pursue only one major, you will likely need to have elective courses in your schedule. These classes allow you to study something that will be beneficial and meaningful. They can also add a dimension to your work and perhaps even give you another hobby. You might even enjoy your electives so much that you decide to switch majors. Before applying to a college, view a list of possible electives. ALUMNI CONNECTIONS Don't forget to think of alumni connections in your family or circle of friends. These graduates can help you get into college. A letter
16
of recommendation or contact with others in your prospective field of study can advance your career. Colleges look kindly upon people with alumni connections. These professionals could also give you insight into avoiding pitfalls and how to best use your degree after graduation. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Extracurricular activities and social events are another element to consider when choosing a college. Connections you make outside of the classroom are very important. Some universities are famous for their sororities and fraternities. Others colleges have excellent sports programs. Any school activities can help you network and make new friends. Students even develop lifelong friendships this way. The culture of your prospective university should be a strong factor in your decision.
ONLINE CLASSES When you have outside commitments or you prefer to learn at home, consider taking online courses. Internet classes will help you save money, especially when it comes to transportation. Online courses may allow you to work at a faster pace than traditional university classes. Working at your own speed can assist you in graduating quickly or tend to your active life. If you are thinking about choosing an online school, be sure to check their academic credentials and reputation. Also pick an institution in good standing. Choosing an institution for higher education can seem like a difficult, daunting decision. But once you understand your academic and lifestyle needs, you can find a school that is perfect for you.

FINANCIAL
How to Turn Your Dreams of Home Ownership into a Reality
Are you ready to take the leap into home ownership? Before you start your house hunting adventure, there are some things you should keep in mind to make the home buying process as simple as one, two, key! First, make sure to check your credit score three to four months before you plan on applying for a loan. To get on the path to responsible credit building, make sure you’re paying your credit card payments on time and in full if you can, and are staying on top of things like auto and student loan payments. If you have a lot of debt, it’s
important to get it under control before applying for a loan. Next, schedule an appointment with a real estate loan officer to help determine what your budget is and what you can afford to buy. Making a budget and sticking to it is important so you know you’ll be comfortable making the payment each month. While monthly payments are a big factor, don’t forget to look at things like interest rates, the length (term) of the loan and the loan type when setting your budget. Do your research. Know what different loan options
18
your financial institution offers and familiarize yourself with terms such as Adjustable-Rate Mortgage (ARM) and FixedRate Mortgage, Escrow and Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI). When you’re ready to fill out your mortgage application, there are some things you’ll need to have on hand; including: pay stubs, tax returns, W-2 forms, bank statements and retirement/ investment statements. Once your ducks are in a row, it’s time to find a real estate agent. Working with a realtor is important because they, alongside your loan
officer, are responsible for looking out for your best interest. Realtors specialize in finding you homes that fit your lifestyle and budget, and they are experts on home buying and real estate laws in your area. In addition, they can help you decipher regulations and contract verbiage, and can make recommendations on home types that will work best for your family and your family’s future. Your real estate agent can also help you line up an inspection so you’ll know the home will be safe. Once you’ve found your dream home, you’ll work with your real estate loan officer to schedule a time to close based on the dates on your purchase contract. This is a great time to ask any questions before signing preliminary loan disclosures. After signing the final loan documents the day of closing, the keys are yours. So, go ahead, jump up and down on the couch in your new home, you deserve it!

FUNERAL HOME
How to Choose a Funeral Home Selecting a funeral home isn’t a task most of us look forward to under any circumstances. Following the death of a loved one is a challenging time when many are vulnerable to making decisions based on emotion rather than sound logic. Most people are directly involved in making funeral arrangements only twice in their lifetime. When the time comes to select a funeral home, they find prices vary dramatically and are, usually, higher than they anticipated. Indeed, funerals can be costly: according to the National Funeral Director’s Association (NFDA) the average funeral cost is over $7,000. A funeral is one of the major investments of a lifetime and, yet, the number one reason cited for selecting a funeral home is “Previously Served” which means the majority of families do not compare prices. Planning before your time of grief will help save money and enable you to make decisions under more ideal conditions. Planning and comparing costs for a funeral should be approached the same as other major purchases. Here are some things to consider when you are selecting a funeral home: The Federal Trade Commission mandates that funeral homes must provide
customers with a price list. A funeral home should furnish this General Price List to you upon request or prior to “in person” conversations about funeral merchandise or services. The perception that a particular funeral home offers special merchandise or caters to a specific religious or ethnic group is simply not true. This viewpoint most likely stems from the marketing/advertising of the funeral home. There are a limited number of wholesale providers of funeral merchandise and any funeral home will serve any family regardless of their religion or ethnic group. When choosing a funeral home, it is advisable to select three or four reputable funeral homes that might fit your needs. Call all of them to request price information and then visit the ones that were most cooperative and transparent. Take a close friend or relative with you to provide a second perspective. It is important to get written estimates for everything along with the manufacturer and specific name of merchandise. You should ask about hours for viewing, in-house versus off-site services, cremation services, additional fees and special requests. If you believe the casket
20
prices are too high at one funeral home, you can purchase the casket elsewhere without being subjected to additional charges. It is important to note that there are many different features available that impact price so make certain you are still getting those features which are most important to you and your family. Most funeral homes also offer a rental casket for services followed by cremation or in instances where you have an alternative to a casket available for burial. Another advantage of preplanning is that you do not need to decide on a funeral home immediately. Ask family, friends and clergy if they have had a personal experience with the funeral home you are considering. Also consider your own experiences at funeral homes when you have attended services. The decision should be made with clarity. If pre-arrangements already exist with a funeral firm, then you should contact that company to ensure they represent the wishes of the deceased and that there are sufficient funds to cover current prices. If you are in this situation, you reserve the right to ask your current firm to make adjustments as necessary or shop around to see if another funeral home
has a better arrangement. It is important to note that the amount paid into the prearrangement will be paid to the funeral home that provided the services. It does not need to be at the funeral home where the prearrangements were made. After deciding on a funeral home and type of service, documentation is the next step. The funeral director will help you with the required forms and permits, including Social Security, Veterans Benefits and Certified Copies of the Death Certificate. When other relatives or friends are involved, it is best to find a funeral home that fits your family's needs. Talk with them honestly and compare notes. Don't allow yourself to be pressured into additional services you don't need or can't afford. Stay within your budget. Talk to the funeral home and tell them who in the deceased's family is authorized to make decisions. Be very detailed about your expectations and what kind of arrangements you want and can afford. Good funeral homes will guide you through the process to ensure that the funeral runs smoothly for everyone. Preplanning can give you a small measure of comfort and peace.

FURNITURE STORE
How to Choose a Furniture Store
Americans everywhere are finding it harder and harder to decide on where and what to buy to furnish their homes. With the overwhelming influx of imported goods from Asia, the Mid East , Mexico and parts of South America the looks of furniture and accessories have never been more affordable, AND...with much more selection. While just 10-20 years ago the most popular wood and finishes for middle America was OAK, now oak is losing ground while darker finishes on woods like cherry, maple and mahogany are becoming very popular. In Iowa oak was once 80% of the wood furniture market. Today it is less than 30%. Plus, the far east hard woods such as mindy and acacia are extremely stylish! With style they also offer quality and in
most cases lower prices. Just like the cost of electronics have come down since the 1970's with importing from places like China, most furniture is less expensive than it was in the hay days of retail furniture from the 1960s through the late 70s. Still, you decide if you want to buy style and fashion at a lower price and then replace it more often.... or buy higher quality and keep your look for years and years. The industry is really able to help both of these consumers with furniture that is a true value. Even a $399 sofa can be a value if constructed properly and your expectation is replacing it within four to five years. When making your purchase one of the most important choices is to deal with a local retailer who has
22
been around for years and is not likely to close up shop one year after your purchase. The Cedar Valley has a few really strong retailers who have been in business for 25 years or more. Simpson Furniture has been in Cedar Falls since 1946 with plans to celebrate their 70th year next year with huge promotions! Since furniture can be a high service purchase most Americans have better success correcting their problems or satisfying the warranty issues when they buy from their home town companies. A major reason you do not see the "Big Boxes" like Sam's Club, Costco and the building centers offer large selections of furniture is because they are not equipped to handle the service that may come into play after your purchase. Even though furniture costs less than 20 years ago you still need to know the differences between things. Ask about solid wood frames, density of the foam in your sofa cushions, whether there are coils in the seat cushion or zigger springs vs. drop-in coils in the seat decks. When it comes to wood goods, ask about solid woods vs. veneers, dowels and drawer
glides. There is a difference between English and French dovetail joints. It is important to find out which joint is used when buying wood furniture. Finally you need to know how the wood is finished. Finishers that will withstand nail polish remover are one of the best to purchase. If the store you shop at or the person helping make your selection can not answer these questions it may be wise to go to another retailer who has the experienced, trusted staff you will appreciate long after the price you paid is forgotten. Our world is changing at a record pace, we are a true global economy, and with these changes your disposable dollar is being asked for from almost every category. New cars, a new cell phone or computer, maybe a different refrigerator or big screen TV is on your next list to purchase. Your home is most folks most valuable asset, so keep in mind that we all spend more time there than almost anywhere else, quality furniture, mattresses and accessories help you enjoy those many hours in comfort and style. So shop wisely.

GRANITE COUNTERTOPS
How to Choose Granite or Quartz Countertops High-quality stone countertops will not only make your kitchen more beautiful and stylish, but they can actually add considerable value to your home. Because of their natural beauty and durability, granite and quartz have become the most popular choices for kitchen countertops today. In addition to enjoying your kitchen for years to come you will reap the rewards when the time comes to sell your home. Real estate agents know that having highend finishes can often bring higher prices and more interested buyers at the time of sale. If you’re thinking about upgrading your countertops, here are some things to keep in mind. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? While granite and quartz are both extremely durable materials there are some distinct differences as well. Granite is a natural product – meaning it is cut from the ground and polished in its natural state. Due to variations in its mineral composition and the way in which it was formed granite will vary greatly in color and pattern. Quartz on the other hand is made up of a blend of natural stone particles, resins and colorants that have been formed into an engineered slab. For this reason, color and pattern are much more consistent than granite. WHICH IS BETTER? While there are strong opinions on both sides of this question the answer really depends on the application and your individual taste. Many people like the maintenance free characteristics of quartz. Others love the look of granite’s natural colors and variation. When it comes to durability and performance, it’s a minor give and take. At the end of the day, most people are comfortable buying the product that catches their eye. The key is to talk to someone who is knowledgeable on the subject. Find someone who sells both – they will give you the most unbiased assistance. HOW DO I CHOOSE WHAT IS RIGHT FOR ME? Most people turn to the internet to research a significant purchase. While that can be helpful to an extent, the best way to educate yourself and find your dream countertop is to visit 24
a showroom. There you can see the stone in person and get advice on what might be the best product for you. Many people who come to our showroom are certain they know exactly what they want. After honest discussion of the give and take of each product and spending some time looking at slabs of each, many customers end up selecting something quite different than they expected. That’s ok - the most important thing is that you love what you’ve picked out. To aid in your decision, bring in samples from the room your tops will go in – cabinet doors, flooring, tile, paint, etc. This will help ensure the stone you pick will complement the things already in your home. Keep in mind things like room size and lighting when making your choice. If your room is small you may want to choose a lighter color to give it a larger feel. If your cabinets are lighter, a darker stone may add a nice contrast. The right color and design for you really depends on your personality. If you are adventurous find something bold to make a statement. Some stones have big veins and vibrant colors that will definitely catch the eye of your guests. If you are more conservative go for something a little less flashy. The key is finding something that appeals to YOU. WHO DO I TURN TO? There are a number of places to buy countertops – granite fabricators, cabinet dealers, builders – even the home centers carry them. The key is to find someone knowledgeable and trustworthy to guide you in your decision. Beware of deceptive pricing with hidden costs. A reputable salesperson will be able to explain the price and exactly what that includes. Also, ask questions about how your countertops will be fabricated. Technology has dramatically improved the quality of every step in the process. Make sure your fabricator has the proper equipment to measure, fabricate and install your tops correctly. For many people, purchasing granite or quartz is literally a once in a lifetime event. Therefore it’s critical to get it right the first time. So do some research and find a trusted hand to guide you. You’ll be glad you did as you enjoy your countertops for years to come.

INSURANCE AGENT
Selecting The Right Insurance Agent Selecting the right insurance agent will save you time and money and will leave you with the peace of mind knowing you have a trusted advisor helping to protect your valuable assets. There are many things to consider when selecting an insurance agent. You will need an agent with the right mix of knowledge and experience, someone that represents a variety of financially strong companies that can insure your auto, home, or business insurance needs. An experienced and knowledgeable agent can walk you through the various coverage options, keeping in mind your budget and individual needs. Your financial future relies on selecting the right insurance agent. You should devote as much time in selecting your agent as you did in purchasing the items that your agent is asked to insure. You would spend more than fifteen minutes buying your auto, home, or business. Don't believe you can insure them correctly in 15 minutes or less without the advice of a good agent. A seasoned skilled insurance agent will be
an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future. Take the time necessary to select the agent that cares about your insurance coverages, claims, and cost. Seeking recommendations from your family, friends, and colleagues is a good way to collect the names of potential agents to contact. People who have had a good experience with their agent are happy to pass on their names to you. Successful agents understand that providing great customer service and advice is a key to staying in business. When a client is happy with the services provided they will gladly tell others. Your insurance agent will appreciate your willingness to refer acquaintances to them in the future. If you do not have any recommendations, begin by researching the local agents in your area. You will be looking for signs of experience insuring in your community. Many insurance advertisements such as in the yellow pages, online ads, or through social media indicate the length of time an agent or agency has been in
26
business. If an agency has been in operation for many years it usually indicates a good reputation with knowledgeable and trustworthy agents. Insurance premiums are not something an agent can predict or control. Selecting an Independent agent that represents more than one insurance company can offer rates of other companies for you when necessary. This allows you the ability to change companies without having to select a new agent or agency. In your search, try to select 2-3 agents with whom you wish to interview. The interview may be done over the phone or preferably in person. Prepare a list of questions and concerns about the agent, the agency and the companies they represent. During the interview the agent
should act more like a teacher than a salesperson. Insurance can be complicated. Make sure the agent can explain the coverages needed with a range of options, deductibles and exclusions. A good agent will present you with choices, explain them clearly, and let you make up your own mind. If at any point you feel the agent is more concerned with the sale than with your needs you may want to keep interviewing other agents. Take as much time as you need to understand each policy. Agents should give you useful information and not subject you to high pressure sales techniques. It is important that the agent assures you they will also be there after the sale is completed. You will want your agent available should you need to file a claim or have a claims related question.

JEWELER
How to Choose a Jeweler Not only is jewelry a nice cosmetic addition to your wardrobe, it is also an investment. Choosing the right jeweler is important when it's time to buy an engagement ring, graduation gift or memento marking a special occasion. Why settle for just anyone? Qualified jewelers are everywhere -- even in the smallest towns. How do you pick the best jeweler in your area? Finding someone with excellent skills is the first thing to consider. Quality jewelers offer reasonable pricing and fantastic customer service. Do not make the mistake of basing your decision on cost alone. Jewelry professionals are skilled artisans who create beautiful pieces with their own hands. They repair, clean and adjust items with ease. They may also offer other products from off-site manufacturers. In general, they are an excellent resource. Jewelers and watch repair technicians have undergone extensive training and should have certifications to prove it. They also attend periodic classes to keep current on regulations within the industry.
Many jewelers travel to professional shows featuring the latest trends. They maintain their knowledge and understanding of the precious metal and gemstone markets. Technical expertise isn't the only aspect to consider. Customers who receive superior service are likely to return for future purchases. You'll want to work with someone who sees more than dollar signs behind each customer. Guarantees are essential. It is a fundamental factor in establishing a long-term relationship with the public and a track record of satisfied customers. Top professionals offer free repair and unlimited service for the life of the jewelry. People often regard their jewelry as a kind of financial or sentimental investment for family members. A professional understands the emotional bonds symbolized by a piece of jewelry, and treats it accordingly. Many jewelers are sensitive to the needs of each customer. A discount store may offer an unbelievable price on a piece of jewelry. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Inexpensive
28
prices are often an indicator of lower quality gemstones and metal components with lower purity. When the item breaks, it might be impossible to take it back for a repair or replacement because the seller has moved on. Some dealers focus solely on profit. Doing business with a jeweler you know and trust will make a big difference when it is time to make a significant investment in a ring, necklace or watch. He or she will make every effort to get you the best possible price without sacrificing quality. If you have been doing business with the same shop for a long time, you should expect a high level of
service. The item should be guaranteed every time. Anyone can sell jewelry. Malls across America are filled with jewelry stores. But a dedicated professional jeweler doesn't just sell precious metals or gemstones. He or she brings a keen eye for the beautiful and stunning quality of each piece. It is true that price is important, but it shouldn't be your top consideration. You will get better value for your money when you do business with a jeweler you can trust -now and 20 years from today. High-quality workmanship starts with the jewelry and ends with your satisfaction.

When you are looking at actual mattress options, the following are popular choices: • Pillowtop mattresses are famous for their softness; however, they do have levels of firmness. They also require a larger bottom sheet because the pillowtop adds to their extra thickness. • Coil spring construction mattresses are great choices for people who want a firm mattress. This option has the ability to keep your spine aligned. Most mattress stores can show you samples of their product lines. Choose the best construction you can afford. • Hybrid memory foam and coil spring mattresses give all the pressure relief and support of memory foam with the feel of a traditional coil spring mattress. • "Memory" or high-density foam or latex mattresses are helpful if you have physical issues, such as skeletal pain
or circulatory problems. This mattress conforms to the shape of the body. It also minimizes pressure points from the health, shoulders and hips. • Gel-infused memory foam is the latest in technology helping you sleep cooler than a standard memory foam mattress while offering the same support and comfort. • Electric adjustable beds allow sleepers to adjust the head and foot of the bed to the most comfortable position. The mattress and foundation must be specially built for the flexing motion and can be innerspring, foam or a combination. Since the flexing causes extra wear on the mattress, quality construction is very important. Mattresses not built for this purpose should not be used with an adjustable bed frame. When shopping for a mattress, don't be afraid of lying down and trying it out. Roll over and pay attention to how your body feels. Are you comfortable? A quality mattress will perform better in the long term and customer satisfaction is higher. How to Choose Alzheimer's Care
Hearing the diagnosis of any fatal disease is difficult, perhaps even more so with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia that cause cognitive impairment along with physical decline. Many family members try to care for people with dementia at home. Sometimes behaviors caused by dementia, such as wandering or being awake at odd hours, mean that’s no longer possible. Finding the appropriate place for your loved one may be the best solution for both of you.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR Make sure to visit any community that you consider and talk with current family members about their experiences. Be sure to inquire if the community you are visiting provides dementia care in a specialized setting, or with the general population of older adults. You want to inspect the living environment. Are the rooms clean and comfortable? Are there quiet areas for reading? Do outdoor activities inspire activity? People with dementia need to feel comfortable and safe.
32
The best options offer cozy atmospheres where your loved one can feel at ease. Professionals who care for people with dementia know the support of family and friends can have a huge impact. You should have ample opportunities for family visits, activities and outings that include family and friends. Do residents get to enjoy regular group activities, special outings and other services? Quality providers offer supervised picnics, fitness and craft classes, religious events and even field trips to enhance the care of the residents. Active people stay healthier longer. The community should not feel like a locked hospital ward or a boot camp, but should have security and protective measures in place. Your loved one should be treated with dignity and respect. Some places provide pet therapy or even have a pet in the building, being cared for by residents and staff. ASSISTED LIVING OR NURSING HOME? People with early to midstage dementia can often receive appropriate care in
assisted living, particularly in a dementia-specific assisted living community. As the disease progresses, a nursing home may be required to meet the person’s care needs. In Iowa, nursing homes that are certified for dementia care are called CCDI (chronic confusion or dementing illness) communities. Nursing homes must provide security, specialized staff training, higher staff to resident ratios and specialized leisure services to achieve the CCDI license. NEW MODELS OF CARE Find out if the organization employs one of the latest proven models of care, such as the neighborhood model or the household model of care. The idea is to replace institution with home, so that residents enjoy life to the fullest in a place they like to be. When you find the right care for your loved one, you can be assured of their safety, health and happiness. And you can enjoy peace of mind knowing they are safe and having moments of joy, in spite of their disease.

How to Choose the Best Audiologist
Have you or a loved one been experiencing a hearing loss? If so, an audiologist can help. More than 38 million Americans have some form of hearing impairment. And many people don’t even realize they have a problem because hearing loss can happen gradually, unless it is caused by an accident. On average, it takes seven years before someone seeks
help after first noticing a problem. And usually, the condition only worsens with time and without treatment. The good news is, hearing loss is not difficult to treat. The first step is to visit your primary care doctor. The doctor can determine if there is a physical reason for the hearing impairment, such as an infection or ear wax buildup. If the loss isn’t caused by an infection or other easily
34
treated methods, your doctor will usually recommend a secondary visit to an ear, nose and throat doctor or an audiologist. Your primary care physician may provide several audiologists to choose from. It’s time to do some research. Audiologists may have a specialty. For example, some professionals see elderly patients while others may focus on helping young people. The audiologist might have a special skill, such as cochlear implants. Consult your friends and family who have experienced hearing loss. Perhaps they have seen an audiologist in your area and can give you a good recommendation. When you have narrowed your choices down to two or three professionals, call their offices and conduct a preliminary interview. Before anything else, make sure they accept new patients as well as your insurance. You don’t want to spend a lot of time on an audiologist you won’t be able to see. They should inform you about the audiologist's background and specialization, along with the wait time for new patients.
Before making an appointment, consider your goals. You might want a complete hearing evaluation. Perhaps you need a fitting for a new hearing aid or a replacement. Or maybe you need more information about ear care and preventing hearing loss. It is usually impossible to resolve an issue with one appointment. Follow up visits for tests, consultations and fittings, will likely be necessary. If you have experienced hearing loss, then your relationship with your audiologist should be ongoing. Make sure you are comfortable with this person. While you’re at it, it is never too early to have a child's ears checked by a qualified practitioner. Children who have a hard time hearing will have a difficult time in school, and the sooner the condition is tended to, the better it is for the child. There is no shame in getting help for hearing impairment. These problems do not go away by themselves. Visiting an audiologist can improve the quality of your life.

How to Choose a Cancer Treatment Center Cancer is a terrible disease that affects millions of people. Almost everyone has someone they know that has cancer or is in remission. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer, it might be hard to decipher all of the treatment options. Cancer patients need expert-level care and lots of support. Choosing a place to receive treatment may seem overwhelming. Covenant Cancer Treatment Center in Waterloo recommends a few things to consider in your search if you need the services of a cancer treatment center now, or in the future. COMPREHENSIVE CARE Following the advice of a doctor is one of the most important steps in treating cancer. A qualified cancer specialist, called an oncologist, will guide you through the process, answering questions patiently and accurately. Receiving treatment at an accredited center where your oncologist practices, and where treatment and recovery services are available in one place, will be to your advantage.
Covenant Cancer Treatment Center is accredited through the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and offers a comprehensive approach to cancer care to ensure patients have everything they need to fight this disease in one convenient location: • two medical oncologists • two radiation oncologists and one advanced registered nurse practitioner • chemotherapy and radiation treatment options • pharmacy, diagnostic testing, and lab services • cancer rehabilitation and wellness services • counseling, nutrition and patient navigation support This may not seem important at first, but as you begin the journey to healing your mind, body and spirit, you’ll soon discover the benefits of receiving treatment at a comprehensive cancer care facility. INSURANCE COVERAGE Review your policy to verify that your oncologist and cancer treatment center are covered by your insurance. Understand the deductibles, co-pays and coverage limits that are already in place. This information will also assist you in the decision-making
38
process. Covenant Cancer Treatment Center works closely with insurance providers to assure your care is properly covered. A social worker specializing in cancer care is available on site to help you understand your coverage and provide assistance with insurance and other financial related questions. LOCATION If at all possible, find a qualified cancer treatment center close to or in your community. Treatment may involve lengthy and repetitive chemotherapy and/ or radiation treatments, so traveling for long periods of time may exhaust your bank account and body. Sometimes, people believe that big cancer facilities in large cities will offer better treatment, which is not always the case. Depending on your diagnosis and recommended treatment, you probably will be able to find comparable treatment close to home. Covenant Cancer Treatment Center offers many of the same state of the art treatment options “close to home” – in Waterloo, at 200 East Ridgeway Avenue. Transportation services are available to help patients in
the Waterloo metro area, and surrounding communities, get to their scheduled treatments if they are unable to drive themselves or find a ride. SPECIALTY TREATMENTS Many cancer centers are on the leading edge of medical treatment and research. Depending on your diagnosis and oncologist’s recommendation, you may be a candidate for clinical trials or investigational treatments. Covenant Cancer Treatment Center offers advanced chemotherapy and radiation treatment options, supported by clinical trial and new treatment opportunities for those that qualify. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Covenant Cancer Treatment Center hopes that by providing the above recommendations, your decision in choosing a cancer treatment center for yourself or a loved one with cancer is made easier. Sue’s story ...
Sometimes, encouragement can be just as strengthening as the most advanced medical treatments.
When Sue was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, she turned to the experts at Covenant Cancer Treatment Center for her surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. But, just as powerful as their state-of-the-art treatments, were the Covenant Cancer Treatment Center providers and staff, who took the time to look after Sue’s emotional needs. They built up her spirits when she was emotionally down. They protected her privacy during treatments. They took the time to answer her questions whenever she called. For Sue, it empowered her to beat her cancer. And she did. The way Covenant Cancer Treatment Center treated Sue emotionally was just as important as how they treated her physically. Sue now volunteers so she can lend support to other patients.

How to Choose a Chiropractor Whether you are experiencing pain or simply want to enhance your overall well-being, you may benefit from seeing a chiropractor. Chiropractors can be a great source for those with back, head, or neck pain. As well as hip and extremity pain. Chiropractic is more than just realigning your spine. Its about finding the root cause of your pain and helping you get better through properly diagnosing your problem and treating you accordingly. More than just with adjusting, but with manual therapy, and properly utilized therapeutic exercises to keep you from needing to being seen again and again. Thinking about the following factors can help you find the right chiropractor for your needs. QUALITY Chiropractors have some of the most stringent educational requirements in the health care industry. According to the American Chiropractic Association, accredited chiropractors go through at least 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical training time combined. Course work includes chemistry, anatomy,
physiology, pathology, radiology, physio therapy, and more one would find in traditional medical or Osteopathic schools. Students must spend four years in a pre-medical program, in addition to about 4 years of professional training. Not only do chiropractors study the body, they usually also study the muscular skeleton, pressure points, bone and joints, and nerves. Finding a chiropractor with these studies under their belt can give you a better experience and results. Prior to selecting a chiropractor, inquire about training and credentials. Make sure he or she is properly qualified, has a current licensee to practice, and has experience in the area you are looking for.
Inquire specifically about his or her demeanor and schedule. Is it easy to make an appointment? You should also find out about the chiropractor's philosophy about health and other wellness issues. Some practitioners will suggest complementary forms of care, including massage. Given the results it can provide, chiropractic care is still affordable and well worth the money. With time and effort, you are likely to find a quality chiropractor in your
area. Your chiropractor should offer complementary forms of care, not just the adjustment. Manual therapy and exercises should be included in services offered. They should be able to treat various types of muscular skeletal conditions using different treatment methods based on the individual diagnosis and needs of the patient. Be able to teach and instruct patients how to stay pain free so its not needed to return multiple times throughout the year.
INSURANCE COVERAGE Many insurance carriers include chiropractic care as part of their regular coverage. GET REFERRALS Someone in your social or professional network has likely received excellent care from a chiropractor. Ask family, friends and co-workers for referrals.

How to Choose an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT) Once you have narrowed down your choices to a few candidates, here are a few things to consider: Along with evaluating their education and credentials, consider that the best specialists have a long history of practicing medicine. Make sure that staff members who perform tests have the proper credentials. Ask friends, family, and workmates of their experiences. Patients who have had positive experiences will often be happy to share their doctor's contact information. Consider the physicians field of expertise and if this translates to the care that you need. There are seven areas of expertise in the field of ENT: • Allergy • Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery • Head and Neck • Laryngology (disorders of the throat) • Otology/Neurotology (disease of the ear) • Pediatric Otolaryngology • Rhinology (disorders of the nose and sinuses) Look for a specialist who utilizes the latest technological advances in his or her practice. Are they practicing ground breaking non-invasive procedures such as Balloon Sinuplasty?
Conducting nose, throat or ear procedures is a very delicate process, and must be performed by a doctor with specific training. Choosing an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor, also known as an otolaryngologist needs careful consideration. To find a qualified otolaryngologist you can visit the Academy of Otolaryngology’s website www.entnet.org. There you will find a list of board certified otolaryngologists in your area. 42
Call the office before visiting your chosen otolaryngologist to verify that they're taking new patients and that their office hours will work for you. Find out how they handle emergencies when the office is closed. How well does the physician communicate with you? A good doctor should be able to evaluate and discuss your preoperative condition, showing how he or she intends to cure your specific condition in a clear and concise manner. Selecting the Best Eye Doctor Eye exams are one of the most crucial things you can do to ensure your health and happiness. Even if you don't have any noticeable trouble with your eyesight, it is still important to have a routine examination. Getting your eyes checked makes it possible to discover vision issues early, when they are easier to treat. Catching and treating eye problems early will likely lead to better outcomes. Choosing a right optometrist or ophthalmologist can be a challenge. Consider these aspects when doing your research. INSURANCE If you have health or vision insurance, check the list of doctors who are covered by your plan. Insurance companies make agreements with doctors or eye care specialists to deliver services as a prearranged price. Picking an "in-network" doctor will save you money on your co-pay and out-ofpocket costs. TYPES OF DOCTORS Optometrists have specialized training in diagnosing and treating
vision and eye health-related problems. These professionals have a bachelor's degree, followed by a four year program to receive their doctor of Optometry degree. Optometrists can identify and diagnose a variety of eye disorders, including cataracts, glaucoma and retinal disease. They also have the ability to write prescriptions to treat certain eye health conditions as well as glasses and contact lenses. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who treat eye diseases with medicines and surgical procedures. They have a full medical degree along with their specialized training for eye treatment. Their extensive background typically includes four years of pre-med school, four years of medical school, at least one year of an internship and three years of residency before receiving their ophthalmology license. Some ophthalmologists also receive another two years of fellowship training in the specific area they will be specializing in. Along with treating vision problems, they provide medical and surgical care, and even plastic surgery. TRAINING Ophthalmologists often specialize in certain diseases
44
or treatments. If you have been diagnosed with macular degeneration, for instance, find a doctor who has experience specifically treating that disease. Be sure to ask eye doctors about their experiences treating specific diseases, conditions, and if they are fellowship trained. REFERENCES Your family doctor or general practitioner may know the good eye doctors in your area. Doctors often refer patients to an eye care specialist that has the most experience treating specific needs. Friends and family can also provide helpful advice. They can tell you who they used for their previous eye exams. These people can also provide insight about any
issues and tell you who works well with children. SELECTION Some people are particular about their frames, lenses or contacts. If you already know what you need -- such as glasses from a particularly designer -- look for an eye doctor who has access to that brand. You can also see their stock of eyeglass frames to make sure they carry the style you desire. When purchasing glasses, it is essential to have a wide range of products to view. Lenses and frames can vary in terms of comfort, appearance, price and quality. The better the selection, the more likely you will find that perfect pair of glasses. How to Recognize the Signs of Heart Attack KNOWING THE SIGNS OF A HEART ATTACK CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE. Signs of a heart attack vary according to gender. Distinguishing the differences can save your life. If you think you might be having a heart attack, stop whatever you are doing and have someone call 9-1-1. Every second is critical when treating a heart attack. “People tend to wait when they think they might be having a heart attack, and that’s a mistake,” states Dr. Todd Lawrence, Covenant Medical Center Emergency Department Medical Director. “The average patient arrives in the emergency department more than two hours after the onset of symptoms, but what they don’t realize is that the sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome for the patient.” HEART ATTACK SYMPTOMS IN MEN SEVERE CHEST PAIN Men most often feel severe tightness in the chest that lasts several minutes. The pressure sometimes shoots up from the chest to the shoulder area, arms, and back. SHORTNESS OF BREATH While sitting or being still, a person may feel like they have
just run up a flight of stairs. The shortness may become so severe that you may feel like you might vomit. DIZZY Dizziness is caused by a lack of oxygen to the body, particularly the brain. A man having a heart attack may faint due to lack of oxygen. TEETH AND JAW PAIN Most men experiencing a heart attack will feel pain in their teeth and jaw. This pain typically rates a seven or above on a scale of 1 to 10. COLD SWEATS Men may develop cold sweats, leaving them feeling chilled and clammy. FREQUENT BURPS Heart attacks often cause acid reflux. A man having a heart attack may respond by burping frequently. YAWNING A man experiencing a heart attack may yawn frequently because the heart is not moving enough blood through the body. HEART ATTACK SYMPTOMS IN WOMEN Heart attacks in women can be more difficult to diagnose. In fact, doctors may miss initial signs of a heart attack. Therefore, it is important for you to know the differences between how a
46
man and woman feels when experiencing a heart attack. CHEST PRESSURE A woman having a heart attack will often feel chest pain, just like a man. However, the pain is often lower. It might feel like stomach pain rather than chest pain. SHORTNESS OF BREATH Nearly six out of 10 women who are having a heart attack feel they are short of breath. EXTREME FATIGUE She will often feel unusually tired, as though she cannot get enough sleep or rest. In fact, extreme fatigue can be an early warning sign for a heart attack. It may start several weeks in advance. BACK PAIN Women often experience severe back pain during a heart attack. NAUSEA Many women having a heart attack experience nausea and will often vomit. CHEST PAIN CENTER ACCREDITATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE In critical times such as during a heart attack, make sure your health care is in the right hands. Seeking out an accredited facility for treatment can be to your benefit. In 2015, Covenant Medical
Center earned Chest Pain Center Accreditation with PCI through the Society of Chest Pain Centers. This accreditation means Covenant has the skills, team and technology to support better outcomes for heart attack patients. “Hospitals that that receive SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack,” said Mary Ferrell, Covenant Medical Center Cardiopulmonary Services Director. “They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms.” ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Covenant Medical Center hopes that by providing the above education, your response to heart attack signs in yourself or others prompts an immediate call to 9-1-1. How to Choose a Hospice Hospice cares for more than 1.65 million Americans, and their families, every year — a number that continues to grow. With usually multiple hospices in one area, it’s important to decide which hospice you want to care for you or your loved one and let your physician know which one you prefer. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization offers these thoughts into the innerworkings of hospice services to help families make the right decision on choosing a hospice. How does hospice care work? Hospice is not “giving up.” Hospice aims to assure a patient’s pain and symptoms are controlled and the patient and family receive physical, emotional and spiritual support throughout the end-oflife journey. Hospice focuses on caring, not curing, and in most cases care is provided in the patient's home. Hospice care also is provided in freestanding hospice centers, hospitals and nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Hospice services are
available to patients of any age, religion, race, or illness. Hospice care is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans, HMOs, and other managed care organizations. Anyone can make a referral and once a referral is made, hospice staff will determine if a patient is eligible. The eligibility requirement is a life expectancy of six months or less — per a physician. Once on the program, members of the staff, including: a doctor, nurses, spiritual counselors, aides, social workers and trained volunteers, will make regular visits to assess the patient and provide services per the patient’s plan of care. Nurses are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Patients and their families are actually able to experience a higher quality of life for however many weeks or months they may have left when they know what to expect and can prioritize what is important to them and their families,” said Cedar Valley Hospice Clinical Services Director Stacy Weinke. “Many patients
Things to ask yourself before choosing a hospice What “extra” services does the hospice offer? In addition to required hospice care services, some hospices offer specialized programs and extensive grief services. These services can benefit children as well as adults. Some also offer people with specific diseases who are not yet eligible for hospice care, “pre-hospice” or “palliative” services that will benefit your family. and their families have been able to create life-long, meaningful memories with their loved one during their end-of-life journey when they have been given the gift of time and Cedar Valley Hospice’s care team.” When is the right time to ask about hospice? Now is the best time to learn more about hospice and ask questions about what to expect from hospice services. Although end-of-life care may be difficult to discuss, it is best for family members to share their wishes long before it becomes a concern. This can greatly reduce stress when the time for hospice is needed. By having these discussions in advance, patients are not forced into uncomfortable situations. Instead, patients can make an educated decision that includes the advice and input of family members and loved ones. “Many try and turn a blind eye to the situation at hand...but in all actuality, the hospice relationship should start sooner,” said Cedar Valley Hospice supporter Casey
Whether or not the organization is a not-for-profit, for-profit, government, faith-based or part of a larger healthcare organization, may be important to you and your family. How long has the hospice been operating in the community? Experience in the industry and length of time in the community may be important to you and your family. Is the Hospice Medicare Certified? Most hospices are certified by Medicare and are therefore required to follow Medicare rules and regulations. This is important if you wish to receive hospice care as part of your Medicare/Medicaid coverage. Does the hospice own or operate a care facility to

How to Choose an Advanced Diagnostics Imaging Provider When an x-ray, CT scan, MRI or other advanced diagnostic imaging service is needed, most patients don’t realize they have a choice of where to go. A choice that can make significant difference in terms of the quality of diagnostics results, patient convenience and affordability. Patients are often surprised to learn they are no longer required to use the default hospital’s imaging center or lab. Here are several important factors to consider the next time you are told you need an ultrasound, bone scan, MRI, or other diagnostic imaging service – and why making an informed decision of where to go can help you make the best decision regarding your healthcare: DIAGNOSTICS QUALITY The importance of quality diagnostics imaging cannot be understated. Your physician will often be making specific treatment recommendations based on the results shown on your MRI, ultrasound, or other advanced diagnostic service. You want to make sure the imaging provider you choose uses current, up-to-date diagnostic imaging equipment to accurately and precisely capture the image your doctor
needs to make critical decisions about your care. • Choose a provider that uses equipment featuring advanced technology – for example, equipment that uses lowintensity radiation and advanced computer software to provide incredibly accurate, enhanced imaging results. • Your provider should use advanced technology to produce crisp, highly detailed three-dimensional images for CT scans, ultrasounds and more. • Your imaging center should invest in the latest in advanced diagnostic equipment including High-Field MRIs, PET/CT scanning, Multi-Slice CTs, and more. MEDICAL EXPERTISE In addition to the right equipment, your diagnostic imaging provider should have an entire team of qualified experts on staff – everything from Patient Advocates to certified technologists to boardcertified and fellowship-trained radiologists. • Patient Advocates who understand and can help you with insurance and paymentrelated issues, including preauthorizations and insurance processing. • Certified technologists who are experts in administrating these sometimes complex and
50
critical imaging procedures. • Full-time, on-site, boardcertified and fellowship-trained radiologists to read, interpret, and provide imaging results directly to your physician. PATIENT COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE A great diagnostic imaging center is a patient-focused imaging center. Look for a center that makes you a priority. When you need imaging testing, the last thing you want is to be forced to park far away and/or get lost trying to find a center that’s located in the maze of a hospital or other medical center location. That’s why convenient locations, close parking and easy-to-find checkin are all little things that make a difference. Patient comfort is another big consideration. Look for imaging centers with easy drop-off entrances, temperature-controlled imaging suites with warm blankets during procedures, as well as overall comfortable and inviting surroundings. A great diagnostic imaging center will also provide: • Same-day, evening and weekend appointments that fit your schedule • Fast diagnostics readings (i.e., within 24 hours) for quicker results to your physician • All the imaging services you
might need at one location • Flexible payment plans and insurance processing coordination AFFORDABILITY With insurance plans today requiring larger deductibles, co-pays and out-of-pocket expenditures, it does make a difference what your diagnostic imaging service provider charges. • Most often, independent imaging centers can charge significantly lower prices compared to hospital-based centers. The primary reason is that independent centers focus on one specialty – imaging. Hospital-based centers are part of a larger system, requiring more overhead and other expenses that can be built into their service charges. By choosing the lower-cost provider, you can save money and help keep overall medical costs down, which can help keep overall insurance costs in line. With the knowledge that you do have a choice for your diagnostic imaging provider, evaluating all your options will help you make the best decision for quality, affordable images from qualified experts.

How to Choose In-Home Care Many people as they age prefer to stay in the place they call home, whether that is where they raised children, a condo where they downsized or even a retirement community they moved into several years ago. As health needs change, though, care may be needed to make that preference a reality. In-home care providers offer assistance that makes it possible for older adults to keep living at home. WHY IN-HOME CARE Bringing someone into your home to provide care and companionship for a few hours at a time is typically less expensive than moving to assisted living. Choosing the right organization requires some research. How long have they been in business? Some companies on the market today are forprofit franchises. Others are non-profit mission driven organizations. Ask about the company’s experience and hiring practices. See if they will provide references from current clients or client family members. Talk to your loved one's primary care physician to help
you understand your choices. The doctor can help you select a provider and help you determine the level of care required. This professional may even have referrals to give you. After speaking to several inhome care providers, you can compare the range of services they offer. Typically, they will fall into three categories: NURSING CARE Providers vary greatly in terms of whether they provide any certified nursing care. Some have registered or licensed nurses who can help with chronic condition management. Others provide care with certified nursing assistants who can provide more simple tasks such as medication reminders and blood sugar monitoring. Always inquire about the medical qualifications of any in-home care providers you are considering. All workers should have the proper training, degrees and certifications. If you are unclear about the exact level of medical care you or a loved one will require, ask your physician for advice.
52
COMPANION CARE Caregivers can help with daily grooming, mobility and any special diet requirements. They can help prepare meals or run simple errands. You might have them help clean out closets, fold laundry, put away dishes, sort mail and other household tasks. An in-home caregiver also provides a friendly face and good conversation as well as general care. The caregiver might sing along as you play the piano, or vice versa. She or he could read aloud, discuss daily news or play a board game. Quality in-home care providers understand that patients also need mental stimulation and human contact in order to stay well. Your provider agency should work to make a good match for you; someone you would find enjoyable to have around your home. PERSONAL TECHNOLOGIES A few in-home care providers now offer simple technologies that help keep you safe at home, even when a caregiver can’t be there. New versions of personal emergency response
pendants offer additional support, such as fall detectors, that can automatically call for help when a problem is sensed. Additionally, medication dispensers help patients take their medications as scheduled to keep them healthy. THINGS TO REMEMBER Before entering a contract, understand the services that will be provided. You want to make sure you are getting what you need without paying for services that are not required. You and any family caregivers should be comfortable with the people who work for the company. Inhome caregivers will quickly become part of your life, especially as they enter and exit the house. Get referrals from people who have been in a similar situation. The best in-home care provider is about finding the right combination of services to fit your unique needs and budget. Once you have the right company, the patient will receive companionship, comfort and cost savings that make in-home care a fantastic choice.

Choosing the Best Maternity Care Choosing maternity care, especially if this is your first baby, can be an exciting yet stressful time. Pregnancy is a huge milestone in a woman's life, with so many things to consider. The Covenant Medical Center Family Birth Center has some helpful tips to guide you through your search for quality maternity care. FIND A PROVIDER An obstetrician, or OB/ GYN, is a medical doctor who specializes in a variety of women’s services, including pregnancy management, delivery and postpartum care. They can also help with any issues associated with the female reproductive system as well as surgical care. OB/GYN doctors can offer advanced care to women with potential complications or high risk pregnancies. Another type of maternity care provider to consider is a midwife. Midwives are health care professionals that provide care during labor, delivery, and after birth. Midwives work closely with OB/GYN doctors, and if the care of a doctor is needed, you will be referred. The midwives at the Covenant Prenatal & Women’s Health Clinic at Covenant
Medical Center are Board Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM). They have a master’s degree in midwifery and are board certified to offer personalized care for normal pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecology. The midwives are skilled in supporting women to maintain a healthy pregnancy and birth, as well as offering individualized health care, education, and counseling to women throughout their life cycle. Learn more about these midwife services at www. WheatonIowa.org/midwives. One of the most effective ways to find a good maternity care provider is to ask your family and friends who have been through the birthing process. Your primary care doctor may also have recommendations for you. When you have narrowed your list of potential doctor and/or midwife providers, make an appointment to see the top two or three. This first appointment is like an audition or interview. Observe everything. How does the staff treat patients? Is there a long wait? Is the office clean? Do you have a good feeling about this doctor? Also, if you have a hospital in mind that you’d like to deliver at, check to make sure the provider you choose has
54
credentials to deliver at the hospital of your choice. CHOOSING A HOSPITAL Tour different hospitals to learn about their labor and delivery services. Know what features and offerings are important to you before you visit so you can ask about them. While you are there, find out which incidentals will be provided and which items you should pack in your hospital bag. To schedule a tour at the Covenant Medical Center Family Birth Center, simply call (319) 272-8288. NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT It is always best to choose a hospital with a good neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in case your baby is born prematurely. Covenant Medical Center has the area’s only Level II Regional Center, offering a warm, sensitive, family-centered environment where family bonding and the healing process are given top priority. The Covenant Medical Center NICU also works in partnership with University of Iowa Children’s Hospital to provide advanced neonatal care to patients in Waterloo, keeping families close to home as often as possible.
Another important item to consider is the hospital's policy regarding having your newborn stay in the room with you. Covenant Medical Center fully supports keeping families together in the room after delivery whenever possible. Currently, NICU babies have the chance to stay out of the traditional NICU setting until their mother is discharged, and instead, get to stay in a standard birthing suite in the Family Birth Center while being monitored closely by attentive staff. This helps promote bonding and calm anxieties for families during a challenging time. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The Covenant Medical Center Family Birth Center hopes that by providing the above recommendations, your decision in choosing the best maternity care for you and your baby seems a little more manageable. If you have questions about any of the services offered by the Covenant Medical Center Family Birth Center, don’t hesitate to call (319) 2728288. You may also visit www. How to Choose a Memory Care Center
People with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia can get specialized medical care which can slow the impact of memory loss. Memory loss can be a frightening experience. For elderly patients, it is sometimes seen as a turning point in life. There are new options in care services. These memory care centers are different from nursing homes or traditional assisted living centers in some important ways. Staff members at these centers are specially trained and experienced in caring for those suffering with dementia. Activities and rehabilitative therapies keep residents as
independent for as long as possible. STAFF The experience and attitude of the staff members is one of the most important considerations. They should treat all patients with kindness and respect. Staff members, in Iowa, are required to participate in a 6 hour Chronic Confusion and Dementing Illness (CCDI) training annually. Centers should provide continuing education to employees to assure that everyone is up to date with the latest in memory loss research and care. Always visit a memory care center before admitting a loved one. Tour the facilities
58
to make sure the building is clean and organized. The atmosphere should be calm and relaxing. Consistency and stability are important to those suffering from memory loss. The center should have a low turnover rate among staff members. No memory care center should rely heavily on part-time workers. Ask about the ratio of staff to residents, as well as the backgrounds of any medical practitioners employed by the center. Your loved one needs personalized care and attention. It is vital that the center has enough workers on staff to provide quality care for your loved one. SECURE, COMFORTABLE SETTING Quality memory care centers will resemble comfortable, inviting homes. They should not look like hospitals. The facility should be clean and sanitary without appearing sterile. A center's cleanliness is an indication of the dedication and price of
everyone who works there. Ask questions about the activities offered to residents, how visits are handled and the types of therapies available. Because patients can sometimes forget where they are, it is important to ask how the center protects its residents. What kind of security features do they use? Note your general impressions of each center you visit. SUPPORT Quality memory care centers have support services for residents and families. Symptoms from dementia can range from mild to extreme. The center should be equipped to handle all stages of dementia. The best centers have support groups for residents and family members. You and your loved one should be comfortable with the memory care center you choose. The best facilities can give patients a much needed boost and improve their overall quality of life.

How to Choose a Physical Therapist
Physical therapy helps alleviate pain. It focuses on treating musculoskeletal disorders. For example, people with back pain can receive physical therapy to strengthen the core muscles in their back. Not only will they feel better, patients may also emerge from physical therapy with a restored, functional body. Most patients visit physical therapists for chronic pain from injuries or if they recently underwent surgery. People
with pain in their backs, knees, neck, shoulder or other joints can receive benefits from finding a physical therapist. Insurance companies often agree about these benefits. Most companies require patients to try physical therapy before turning to expensive surgery to fix the problem. In fact, physical therapy can actually negate the need for surgical treatment. After surgery, physical therapy might serve as part of the aftercare and recovery
62
process. For example, when you have surgery to repair a rotator cuff, a therapist can play a huge part in a successful recovery. People with degenerative disc problems in their backs will benefit from a physical therapy regimen. It can help ease pressure and pain in their lower back. Normally, a problem like this requires surgery, but physical therapy can help patients regain a full range of motion. Physical therapists also provide the best remedy for other injuries. Someone with a reattached finger will need to practice with a physical therapist to regain feeling and movement. A person who has been incapacitated for an extended period may need physical therapy to regain their functionality. Insurance companies will likely have requirements. You may have to choose a therapy that is in-network, rather than out-of-network. Your insurance may also limit the amount of visits they cover. Once you have narrowed your search to a few potential candidates, inquire about the physical therapist's previous work history. Don't be afraid of asking directly about their success rates and potential
problems. Also, contact your state board of physical therapy to see if any complaints have been filed against the professional you are considering. The best physical therapists will provide emotional support as well. Treatment and recovery is very hard work, especially for patients in severe pain. When you feel exhausted, the physical therapist will provide motivation. She will not allow you to make excuses. Instead, a physical therapist will push you to your limits, which will aid in your full recovery. The therapist will inspire you to regain your full independence; this is especially important for elderly people who have problems getting around on their own. The physical therapist will likely provide you with followthrough exercises at home. It is very important you act on her recommendations. It will help you recover faster. With the assistance of a good physical therapist and your own hard work, you can often make recover fully and enjoy life again.

How to Choose Skilled Nursing Care for Your Loved One
You can never be too choosy when it comes to your loved one. Finding a skilled nursing facility can be a challenge for everyone involved. With hundreds of choices available, it can be difficult to sort through all of your options. Start early. If you are planning a surgery, or know that your loved one will need additional care, it is a good idea to begin your research early. A good resource to help you get started is the Iowa Nursing Home Ratings through the Department of Inspections and Appeals. They use a 5-Star rating system. Using this as your guide, it is also important
to visit the facilities you are interested in! The rating systems hold skilled and extended nursing care facilities to a high standard of care and services. By visiting your facility of interest, one will get a good ‘feel’ for the environment and see the staff ‘in action!’. Skilled nursing facilities provide more personalized care to residents who are suffering from advanced age, severe illness or life challenges that require 24/7 care. Your loved one will need reassurance that he or she will be safe and well taken care of by a highly skilled nursing staff. LOCATION IS KEY Transition to Skilled Nursing Care can cause a bit of unease for your loved one, as well as you! The social workers and admissions coordinator at the facility of your choice should be able to answer all the questions you have and help coordinate services and resources to make the transition as smooth as possible. Consider the personality of your loved one. Do they
64
make new friends easily, or is it important that they have their family and friends close by for regular visits? Frequent visits will help ease the transition from independent living to a skilled nursing environment. Life enhancement opportunities such as card clubs, social groups, and other life enhancement opportunities also make the transition a little easier. Inquire about these things when you do your research. TAKE A TOUR You can best form an accurate opinion by visiting several facilities. Reputable centers will have no problems with scheduling interviews with staff or giving tours of the living areas and grounds. If a facility doesn't allow you to see these areas or have a meeting with the director, it should be dropped from your list. Cleanliness, cheerful decor and happy residents neatly dressed are symbols of a quality facility. Speak to current residents and their families to get a good assessment of the facility. Family members
will likely provide the most unbiased and unvarnished opinion of the facility. Most high-quality skilled nursing facilities are significant investments. They provide a much higher level of care and so they cost more. Talk with an attorney who specializes in nursing facility cases for advice on cost, as well as quality of care. The decision to put your loved one in a particular facility is not permanent. If your family member is not receiving good care or shows signs of abuse, you have the right to remove him or her. Frequent visits are important so you can monitor the health and well-being of your loved one. See him or her at different times of the day to verify the level of care. Take all the time you need when searching for a skilled nursing facility. Making this lifestyle transition with your loved one can be difficult and emotionally challenging. Finding the best living option you can afford should give you peace of mind.

How to Choose a Urologist Below are some questions to ask the primary care provider when it is time to select the urologist that will deliver the best possible patient care. 1) What kind of education and credentials do they have? 2) Have they been continuing their education in their specialty? 3) How long have they been practicing medicine in this field? 4) Since urologists have a variety of sub-specialties, do they have experience in the area of need? 5) What technology do they employ when performing a procedure? 6) Since healthcare can be expensive, is there a local option? 7) How is their bedside manner? Ask if your physician these questions and talk through them. Becoming a well-informed patient may yield less out-of-pocket dollars and a more pleasant experience. Once you come across the urologist that is right for you, stop seeking, schedule your periodic visits and have peace of mind. Article contributed by Cedar Valley Medical Specialists
Most patients do not realize that they have a choice when selecting a urologist. RETIREMENT COMMUNITY
Selecting the Best Retirement Community for Your Needs Many senior citizens want to keep their energy levels up during their retirement years. They are more health conscious and see how an active lifestyle leads to a long life. If you are in the market for a retirement community, there are plenty of things to consider. This retirement community will hopefully become your home. It is important to choose a vibrant place, with plenty of parking and recreational activities. These days, more Americans are remaining active into their retirement years. They are searching for communities that match their lifestyles and goals for relaxed living. Here are some aspects to consider before making a financial commitment to a living facility. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES AND PARKING Many seniors enjoy golf, swimming and walking. Any prospective retirement community should have easy access to such activities. Other seniors enjoy arts and crafts, board games, dancing
and organized activities. Taking part in social events can provide opportunities to make new friends. Research what kinds of social events are organized within the retirement community. Also, find out if the community has ample opportunities for residents to travel to theaters, museums or shopping malls together. Parking is another important factor when choosing a retirement community. Most people enjoy having family and friends visit, so parking is a necessity. When parking is tight, visitors will be less likely to come. Do not overlook its importance. MEDICAL CARE FACILITIES Retirement communities should be easily accessible to emergency personnel. Know the location of the closest hospitals, doctors, ambulance services and other personnel. You may wish to restrict your search to communities located near your preferred physician or other service providers. Any prospective community should have a formal emergency plan in
68
place. In addition, check to see if the retirement unit has custom safety features, such as railings in the bathrooms and entranceways. PET POLICIES Pet policies are another feature to consider when investigating potential retirement communities. Some facilities will allow you to bring your pet to live with you while others will not. So if you have a pet you don't want to leave behind, you may be able to bring it with you. Many communities now recognize the health benefits of having pets. Additionally, a park or nearby dog walking area will benefit you and your animal companion, particularly if your pet requires daily exercise. Taking a walk each day will benefit both of you. CHURCHES, LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS Consider how close the community is to schools, sports facilities, and other sites that produce a large amount of traffic volumes and noise levels. Many people prefer to live in less congested, quiet
areas during their later years. Also, think about where the nearest libraries and churches are located, as well as public transportation. Ask whether the community provides its own transportation for residents. Some facilities have their own fleet of minivans and buses. It is extremely helpful for seniors who no longer drive and need to do some routine personal shopping. THE COMMUNITY Current residents will give you a feel for their level of satisfaction with the community. Talk to them about their experiences and seek candid reviews of the amenities and staff. After all, it is important you feel confident that you have selected a retirement community that fits your personal needs and lifestyles. By taking the time to research multiple facilities, you will undoubtedly find a warm, welcoming facility. You will be able to build lasting friendships and gain the support you need to have fun during your retirement.

ROOFER
How to Choose a Roofer
Is your roof looking shabby and missing shingles? Are you finding little leaks here and there? Perhaps it’s time to start looking at replacing the old roof with a durable and good looking new cover. Putting a new roof on your home can increase its value. It is also a necessity in the event of a leakage or if a severe storm has torn shingles off your house. Professional roofing contractors are the most qualified people to perform this work. They will install a new roof safely and effectively. Roofers will provide a warranty for their work. If there are any problems with your new roof in the future, they will fix the problem. Your first step in finding a reliable roofer is to ask your
family, friends and neighbors if they have recommendations. You can also look on the Internet for roofing contractors in your area. Some websites offer lists of professionals, along with reviews of their work. Personal recommendations will give you the best information. Be sure to focus on the quality of work as well as the cleanup process. You don't want scraps of shingles and nails left over after the contractors have gone home. Don't hire professionals who leave debris after they are gone. Pick someone with a long track record in your community. Some contractors travel the country looking for work. They appear after a community experiences
70
a natural disaster or heavy storm. These contractors are making money from the insurance claims. If you hire one of them, they cannot provide realistic guarantees for their work. After all, they may be on the other side of the country if your roof starts to leak again. Becoming acquainted with local contractors is especially important if you live in an area prone to high winds or hurricanes. It is good to know who to call if your house needs repair work. Once you have contact information for several roofing contractors, call them. Inquire about the company's background and how long they have been in business. Generally, a good roofer should offer a guarantee of anywhere from five to 12 years. If the company has been in business for less than five years, it will be difficult to determine the quality of their work. Continue to ask questions about time frames and estimates. You should always get a written estimate before proceeding with any work. Communicating with the contractor will let him know that you will be taking a
hands-on approach to this project. Find out if the roofers recommend standard or architectural shingles, what they will do if they find damaged decking, and when they might be available to start. You should also ask about the warranty and whether you can have it confirmed in writing. Every professional who works on your property should be licensed and bonded. Insurance is particularly important for roofing contractors. They should be able to cover any damages they might cause to your property. It is also essential that workers are covered under their insurance as well, in the event someone is injured during the job. Before work commences, you must receive a written contract from the roofer. Read it over carefully. It will state the type of materials to be used, what the work will entail and the final cost. Following these tips will help you find the best roofing contractor in your community. You can rest comfortably knowing that you made the right decision.
