ASSISTED LIVING

How to Choose an Assisted Living Facility When living at home alone is no longer a viable option, assisted living provides appropriate care while still allowing a person to maintain independence, dignity and choice – all important aspects to us throughout life. When you need to look for an assisted living community, there are many things to consider. Start with an online search for assisted living providers in your area, and make a list of those that you think might be a good fit. Be sure to visit each one so you can see it, meet staff and residents, and ask questions. COSTS Cost typically comes to mind right away and it is certainly something to ask about. Be sure you are comparing apples to apples among different providers. Each one might figure rent a little differently. Ask if the monthly cost includes meals and any health services. Is medication management included? Or is everything a la carte? An awareness of how fees are charged will help you avoid surprises later. Special services might be an additional cost. While a clear understanding of expenses is beneficial, there are several other aspects to keep in mind. QUALITY OF CARE Ask about the director or administrator’s credentials. What is the length of their experience in assisted living? Is it locally owned and operated, or a franchise with far-away owners? Ask about the organization’s mission and values to find out what it considers to be important. Something specific to ask about is whether someone is actually in the building 24/7, or simply on call. Find out how they handle emergencies with residents, day or night. BUILDING APPEARANCE Take a close look at the grounds and building(s). Are they clean and wellmaintained? Is the climate appropriate? Is there natural light and easy access to the outdoors? You want to live in a home that has a cheerful environment. REFERENCES The quality of care and satisfaction of current and former residents will also figure prominently into your decision. Go out of your way to meet residents and family members. Ask for honest opinions about the staff, amenities and accommodations. LEISURE SERVICES Inquire about activities for the residents. Also, take a look at their calendar of events to get a better idea about the lifestyle of people living there. Make a list of things that are important to you. If you pursue gardening, crafting or other hobbies, look for a place that lets you continue these hobbies with ease. 2

People who enjoy staying active and exercising can find a facility that has an exercise room or secure place to walk. Gregarious people need a community that that allows plenty of opportunity for socializing. TRANSPORTATION Does the assisted living community provide transportation for residents? If so, you want to find out the extent of bus availability, i.e., for medical appointments, shopping and/or leisure activities in the community. LEVELS OF CARE It’s important to think about the future. Find out how additional health needs could be accommodated, or whether a move would be required. Ideally, you want to find a place that can take care of additional care needs. Moving into assisted living doesn’t have to be stressful or unpleasant. With research and diligence, you can be confident that you or your loved one will be well cared for, while still being able to enjoy life.

What to Look for in an Assisted Living Center As people age, they often need extra care. Others may be facing a debilitating illness. The care required can be far more than friends or family can give. Assisted living centers are popular options for people who need medical attention. In the past, long-term care could only be handled by a nursing home. Living in a hospital setting for an extended time was not a pleasant environment. Assisted living centers help patients continue to live an active lifestyle. They can live in comfortable, cost-effective setting that has many conveniences. However, this center is also a full-time medical facility. If you are searching for an assisted living center for yourself or a loved one, here are some factors to consider. GARDEN AND LANDSCAPING It's a little known fact that the landscaping of an assisted living center will give you a good indication about the quality of the facility. Proper maintenance of the lawn and gardens is a good sign. If the prospective resident enjoys spending time in nature, look for a facility that has park-like areas. Some centers have community-style gardens and walkways for residents. HOME AMENITIES Accommodations at these centers can range from luxurious, detached cottages to cozy condominiums. Look at the home amenities and consider how they meet your budget. As you visit the facilities, try to personalize each space. Imagine how your loved one's belongings might fit into the area and where decorations will be placed. If you can picture how the furniture and other items will fit, then you might've found the right place.

4

RECREATION FACILITIES Game and meeting areas can help the resident make new friends. Leaving the confines of their units is an important part of recovery. Make sure the center offers activities and space to occupy your loved one's time. Quality facilities will have activities that match his or her hobbies. If your family member enjoys crafts, then look for a center with a designated craft area or classes for your loved one to enjoy. PERSONAL CARE Ask your loved one's personal physician how much care is required to function safely. The doctor may even be able to guide you toward an appropriate facility. Be sure seek advise on what qualifications and certifications you need to look for in the center's staff. The center's employees should be well-qualified to handle medical needs. If you monitor the medical care, you can avoid paying for extensive services that your loved one may not need. Understand the care the person requires will help you find a center that is a good fit. Choosing an assisted living facility is about finding the right combination of medical services and amenities. With research and thought, you will find the perfect place to bring comfort and care to your loved one.

How to Choose an Auto Body Shop Anyone who has experienced a car accident knows that it can be a calamitous event. Once you have dealt with any resulting health issues, you will have to contend with damage to your automobile. Whether your car has experienced significant damage or simply a scratch, it is vital to find an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable. Even the smallest accident can throw your schedule into disarray. A good auto body shop will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are a necessary part of life for most people. Once you have a list of names, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. If your social network doesn't have good recommendations, consult the Yellow Pages, advertising supplements or the Internet. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone. Describe the problem and listen for the response. If the person seems knowledgable and friendly, keep that shop on the list. However, if the person seems rushed and uninterested, it can mean the shop is very busy. It might also have poor customer service. Eliminate them from your list. When you have chosen an auto body shop, visit their store. Check for prices, certifications guarantees. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint incorrectly applied.

6

Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car. They should have previous satisfied customers with whom you can contact. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don't match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Quality auto body shops should be able to complete an entire job onsite. Our cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans get us to work on time, back and forth to school and transport our families to and from their destinations. Choosing a great auto body shop is important for yourself and your family. The right auto body shop will have superior customer service, great prices and excellent quality of work.

How to Choose an RV Purchasing a recreational vehicle can be a fun experience, but it can also feel overwhelming and can be much more complicated than buying a car. Purchasing a recreational vehicle can be a fun experience, but it can also feel overwhelming and can be much more complicated than buying a car. After talking with a dealer, many first timers sometimes end up with more questions than answers. With some research and help from the right dealer as well as other RV owners, you can find an RV that is right for you. If you’re not in the position to purchase the cart before the horse, your first step should be to research and know your vehicle’s towing capacity. Next decide how many you’d like to sleep and which of today’s popular features you’d prefer, like an exterior kitchen, bunk beds, or a spacious bath. When shopping it’s also helpful to take note of the location of certain amenities and their accessibility when slides are in and your coach is in travel mode. Consult resources to answer these questions. Use the Internet to browse RV brands and styles. There are also numerous message boards for RV owners that contain useful information. The best way to learn about recreational vehicles is to speak with owners themselves. If people in your social network own an RV, ask about their vehicle. Look through the interior, examine various options so you can understand what’s available. It’s also helpful to have some idea where you wish to travel and keep in mind that some state and national parks have size and amenity restrictions. Once you have become more acquainted with the marketplace, start visiting RV dealers. After all your research, you should be able to speak with the salespeople clearly and confidently. Take caution with salespeople who try and push your purchase decision along and find a dealership and sales staff that’s willing to take the time necessary to discuss your needs and wants. If you plan on purchasing a new RV, your dealer of choice should be more than qualified to provide factory warranty service and it’s important to inquire with them what their policies are for providing these services. For example if you’re looking for a seasonal site be certain to ask your dealer if they offer on-site service and understand that most factory warranties do not pay for these services as they are considered a convenience. Unfortunately, the RV industry doesn’t offer services like a nationwide condition and damage report as compared to the auto industry. You should inquire and make certain that your dealer of choice has inspected your RV of interest and is happy to show you the equipment while in its working mode and is patient and knowledgeable enough to provide you an informational walk through to answer any questions specific to your purchase before you pull away from the dealership. Should you wish to finance your purchase, it’s helpful to explore the rates and terms you’re looking for with your local bank and ask the 8

dealership if they offer indirect lending services. A reputable dealership will have several banks at their disposal that can offer the benefit of long term lending opportunities. Keep in mind they may even be able to beat the rate your local bank can provide. Take advantage, if you’re in the position to bring a friend and fellow RV owner with you to the dealership. Most people are happy to share their thoughts and experiences with you. It is a good way to ensure you are getting a fair deal and that you’ve considered all your options. It’s more than acceptable to purchase things like a toaster or perhaps book a repeat vacation to your destination of choice on the internet, but when making investment in an RV, it’s always best to shop locally. Purchasing from a dealership several states away simply because they advertise the best price may not be the best investment. Perhaps it’s enticing to hear that they are willing to deliver to your driveway, but ask yourself if you want something in your driveway that you’ve never had the opportunity to walk through, touch, smell or feel. Many dealers are in the position price match-just ask. It’s important to understand that warranties on most anything you purchase are between you and the manufacturer. RV dealers are not contracted through the manufacturers to provide warranty work on an RV purchased from internet wholesalers. If you choose the right dealer, you can obtain a great deal locally and ultimately benefit as a service priority when and if you have service or warranty needs. Remember your investment and the expectation in it providing years of satisfaction during times when you’re ready to unwind. The best dealers have an on-site service department. Some RV repairs are specialized and different from regular vehicles. You will need a service shop that will accept your warranty in the event your RV is ever damaged. With a little effort and time, you will find a fantastic deal on an RV best suited for your needs. Then, you can spend time in your vehicle enjoying the scenery.

How to Choose a New Car Dealer Giving back to those who have given me a chance to earn their business is what keeps us going. Dan Deery, President and Owner Purchasing a new car can seem like a daunting experience, especially if you have never done it before. Inexperienced car shoppers are often intimidated by the cost, the process and even dealers who may try to overcharge them. It doesn't have to be this way. Finding a dealer you can trust will defuse anxiety. The whole experience will become a simple, low-pressure transaction. Good car dealers will make the entire process of buying a car simple and straightforward. CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAR Selecting the right automobile for your needs and lifestyle is essential. Large families may need an SUV or van to fit everyone into the vehicle. But college students buying their first car would probably be happy with a compact car such as coupe. The savings on gas will help ease your finances while you are in school. Along with the car model, there are numerous options to consider. You might get a car with a navigation system, moonroof, GPS and satellite radio, just to name a few. If you have to commute long distances, think about purchasing a smaller car with a good MPG rating. Hybrid cars can help you save money on gas. Anyone in a cold climate might look at various vehicles with either all-wheel or front-wheel drive. CHOOSE THE DEALER Make sure to look for current incentives and warranties on the car you want. During specific times of the year, you might be able to get a great deal on a new car. It is particularly true now during Summer Sell Down. Of course, you should test-drive a car before purchasing it. 10

When shopping for a new car it is important to choose a dealership you can trust, rely on, and feel comfortable doing business with. This long-term relationship is especially important for customers who like to have thier car serviced at the same dealership for the life of their vehicle. These positive business-to-customer relationships are not only good for the consumer, but also the dealer. The best dealers work hard to cultivate life-long customers through every aspect of the car buying process from the moment the customer drives onto the lot to when the car is being serviced years down the road. You need to find a dealer you're comfortable with. Considering the price of buying a new car and the long-term commitment you'll be making sometimes it's worth it to spend a few extra bucks to get the dealer that takes care of you the very best. With a bright future ahead, we will continue to grow and serve our community as Voted the Cedar Valley's Best of the Best No. 1 Automotive Dealer.

CARPET CLEANING

How To Choose A Carpet Cleaner Carpets make a home warm and comfortable. They provide a soft surface for you to rest your feet. There is nothing like lying down on the carpet after a long day at work. A regular cleaning will help your carpet maintain its beauty and texture. Guests, pets, children and minor accidents can lead to stains on your carpeted floors. A good carpet cleaning company will be able to remove spots and stains. Experts can revive an older carpet by using special equipment and processes. When they are through, your old carpet will feel bright and fluffy all over again. Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting a carpet cleaner: PROFESSIONAL STAFF The appearance and demeanor of the floor-cleaning company will tell you a lot about the quality of their services. Because there are few regulations on cleaning businesses, the professionalism of each company can vary widely. It is essential to find a company that does honest, quality work. After all, you will be bringing them into your home, so ask the company questions before hiring them. Request proof of their insurance coverage. If the company doesn't have insurance, you could be responsible for any injuries or damage that occurs while they work inside your home. Inquire about whether the company has its own employees or subcontracts cleanings to other providers. Talk to them about their backgrounds and any special certifications they have in their industry. CLEANING PROCESS There are numerous processes to clean carpets. Chemicals, water, steam and other heavy-duty equipment could all be used. Ask them about their methods. You should understand why they prefer one process over another, and why it is best for your home. If you have children or pets, verify that the chemicals are safe for them. If you are allergic to certain chemicals, be sure to check that they are not using anything that would be harmful. HAPPY CUSTOMERS When you speak to cleaning companies, ask them for references from previous customers. Most people are happy to tell you when they've received satisfactory services. 12

You can also ask people in your social network about carpet cleaning companies. If they have found a great service, ask for the contact information and get a quote for your own home. You can also search online for information about what to expect. Look at review websites to see what customers have said about each business. Of course, maintain a level of skepticism about anything you read. Even the best cleaners will leave a customer dissatisfied, so one person's rant isn't necessarily a reflection of what you could expect. If possible, contact the Better Business Bureau to see whether there have been any complaints filed about a business and how they were resolved. PROTECTION POLICIES Cleaning companies should have policies in place for protecting your home and guaranteeing their work. If spots return or if you are unhappy with the results, they should send someone back to clean your carpets again at no charge. High-quality companies guarantee their work for a period of time. If the prospective cleaning company gives a guarantee, it is a good indication of their sound business practices. When you find a company with warrantees and a spotless reputation, you know you have found a good carpet cleaner.

EDUCATION

How To Choose a Private School

Parents send their children to private schools for many reasons. Ultimately, it is because parents want what is best for their children. Many families believe a faith centered, private school helps their children succeed. Educational value is important and private school can be worth the financial investment. Generally discipline is not a problem in private schools. There are two main reasons: most private schools provide a structured learning environment and secondly, codes of conduct by which private schools operate, are enforced. Dr. Dale Monroe, Cedar Valley Catholic Schools’ Chief Administrator states, “If a student misbehaves or breaks the rules in our system, there will be consequences. This is a top priority for our families and supports the principle of self discipline.”

Choosing a private school is an important decision and a family investment in a child's future. Keep your focus on the "right fit" for your child. When visiting a school, look for areas and programs that the school values. Be sure to visit classes and speak with teachers and staff. Ask questions. Does the school seem to be the kind of place your child will thrive? Are teachers committed to developing your child's talents? Do teachers and staff seem committed to helping children learn? Private schools expect parents to be actively involved in their child's education. The concept of a three way partnership is important in most private schools and the degree of participation and involvement will depend on a parent's schedule. Ask what opportunities and ways parents can be involved. Is there a parent organization? Participation depends on your availability, talents, and experience. The important thing is to observe and see where you as a parent can fit in. If the school needs an organizer to run the annual auction, then help out as a committee member before offering to take on the major responsibility. If your child's teacher asks you to help chaperone a field trip, that's an opportunity to be a team player. Private schools enroll the entire family, not just the child. Evaluate your child's educational goals and needs. Are there physical or learning disabilities or behavioral issues? Has your child voiced an interest in science, math, technology, athletics or fine arts? Now, consider what your ideal school would offer. Make a list of these features. What does the curriculum offer? Is technology implemented in the daily course work? Are students being prepared for college? What kinds of special programs are available? Does the school offer advanced placement or college credits? What opportunities will your child have - is the school a "Leader in Me" designated school? Is there a service learning requirement? Will your child have to volunteer in the community as part of class course work? Columbus Senior, Robert Hart, wrote on his service reflection, “Without realizing it, I had grown into one of the people I so admired as a child....the students (I tutored) with free, adventurous minds and open hearts, listened to me. I made a difference for them.” Are there transportation considerations? Some private schools allow public school busing options. Are extracurricular activities, such as sports, band, art, drama, or academic clubs important? Look at the schools' websites. Most sites have information as well as policy summaries. Look at photo galleries, social media, and videos. Some sites even give virtual tours. Is there extended child care? Is there a preschool program?

Public schools have to keep religion out of the classroom. Private schools can teach religion according to the mission and philosophy of the school. Is faith important to your family values? Does the school accept children of all faiths and what religious rites are included in the school day? Are students allowed to opt out or is there another option? One of the biggest reasons parents consider private school is because most have smaller class sizes. Teacher engagement and one-on-one instruction can be critical in the "tween" years. Most students receive individualized instruction and many excel academically. Ask for referrals from other parents, teachers, guidance counselors, family, and friends. Contact the school and make an appointment to take a tour. Be aware of how you are treated by the staff members. Were they friendly, helpful, and respectful? Try to meet as many of the staff and teachers as possible. Evaluate the atmosphere of the school. How did the students behave? Most importantly, will your child and your family feel comfortable there? Is it easy to picture your child spending time there? If your child accompanies you, ask him or her about the school. Children often have special insights and reactions to environments. Is there is a uniform requirement? Many private schools require students wear uniforms. This appeals to parents who want their children to dress appropriately, not provocatively. On average, schools with a uniform policy see a significant decrease in bullying. After completing your tours, you will begin to see which school is the best fit for your child. At this point, parents can better understand the financial investment of private education. This will also allow you to determine how to fit tuition into your budget. Blessed Maria and Sacred Heart parent Kim Reiter reflected, “All children deserve a quality education that will prepare them for higher education or the workforce. All parents deserve a return on the investment in their most precious assets. I’m willing to make sacrifices now that will pay off in my daughters’ futures.” Article contributed by Cedar Valley Catholic Schools

EDUCATION

How to Choose a University Choosing the right college or university can feel overwhelming. After all, your decision will have long-term ramifications. The college or university can help you achieve your goals or leave you lying in the dust with a huge tuition bill. Selecting a strong college with an excellent reputation will give you a firm foundation to pursue your dream life. Careful planning and thought will help you feel confident that you are making the right choices for your life. LARGE OR SMALL SCHOOL? Ask yourself if you learn better in an intimate setting or a large classroom. Some schools have a small student-to-teacher ratio while others have auditoriums filled with students listening to a lecture. As you begin your research, be sure to look for information on class sizes and student population. AREAS OF SPECIALTY The reputation of a university or college is very important. It can open or close doors in your career. Most colleges are renowned for a handful of majors. Does the learning institution specialize in your area of interest? Attending a prestigious university or college will give you opportunities and resources. The possibility of employment after graduation also dramatically improves when your school has good name recognition. MINORS Once you have decided upon a major, think about your other areas of interest. Many colleges offer students the choice of adding a double major or minor to their plan of study. Even if you are going to pursue only one major, you will likely need to have elective courses in your schedule. These classes allow you to study something that will be beneficial and meaningful. They can also add a dimension to your work and perhaps even give you another hobby. You might even enjoy your electives so much that you decide to switch majors. Before applying to a college, view a list of possible electives. ALUMNI CONNECTIONS Don't forget to think of alumni connections in your family or circle of friends. These graduates can help you get into college. A letter of 16

recommendation or contact with others in your prospective field of study can advance your career. Colleges look kindly upon people with alumni connections. These professionals could also give you insight into avoiding pitfalls and how to best use your degree after graduation. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Extracurricular activities and social events are another element to consider when choosing a college. Connections you make outside of the classroom are very important. Some universities are famous for their sororities and fraternities. Others colleges have excellent sports programs. Any school activities can help you network and make new friends. Students even develop lifelong friendships this way. The culture of your prospective university should be a strong factor in your decision. ONLINE CLASSES When you have outside commitments or you prefer to learn at home, consider taking online courses. Internet classes will help you save money, especially when it comes to transportation. Online courses may allow you to work at a faster pace than traditional university classes. Working at your own speed can assist you in graduating quickly or tend to your active life. If you are thinking about choosing an online school, be sure to check their academic credentials and reputation. Also pick an institution in good standing. Choosing an institution for higher education can seem like a difficult, daunting decision. But once you understand your academic and lifestyle needs, you can find a school that is perfect for you.

HOME BUILDER

How to Choose a Home Builder How to Build a Home Now is a great time to build your dream home. These days, home prices are affordable in many parts of the nation. Labor and construction costs have stabilized, and interest rates are near historic lows. When you are considering the next step toward building a home that's all your own -- from design to finish -- here are some things to keep in mind. Craig Fairbanks

CUSTOM OR NOT Your first step is determining which kind of builder you want: custom or production. Both builders have advantages and disadvantages. Production builders are popular with a limited number of plans and options you can pick from. Many people believe that production builders are affordable and fast. These builders have several floor plans they use and some level of interior and exterior customization. This helps production builders streamline the process and when using them, you may be limited in the location of your home, how much the floor plan can be customized and the kind of quality you can expect. With a custom builder, your limit is only your imagination and budget. While you might think that a custom home will cost more than a production or "tract" home, buyers prefer it because they can build on their own land and decide every single aspect of the construction process. Custom homes may actually cost you less!! You are also making all the selections, design and planning decisions that impact your budget, value and the total price. For many custom builders the price actually may be less because the home is presold at an agreed upon price. The builder does not have to worry about the unknown cost of speculative financing and the risk of a long sales time on the market. These cost can instead be passed onto the customer as savings on the total project or added options. 18

FINANCING Depending on your situation, you may need to secure construction financing in order to build your home. Construction financing usually consists of more than one loan, however there are many banks, financial institutions, and credit unions that are providing big closing cost discounts for the opportunity to do business with you. Many of these construction loans convert to your permanent loan at the end. By having a construction loan funds are released to the builder in stages as processes are finished, providing safeguards that your funds are dispersed properly during the construction process. Do some comparison shopping at banks, credit unions and mortgage brokers for the best financing solution. You can also ask your builder for recommendations. They will likely have some options because his livelihood depends on their clients securing financing for construction loans. Your builder may even help you avoid pitfalls. THE BEST BUILDER When selecting a builder, the most important factor is a good reputation. High-quality builders are known for superior design, reliability and craftsmanship. They have likely worked in construction for years. Drive by some of the homes they've built and, if possible, talk to their owners to get an idea about what you can expect. Ask what processes the builder has in place to assure that your home project goes smoothly as possible to assure that you get what you have said you want. Review their contracts, specification sheets and warranty documents prior to signing the final purchase agreement. A competent builder should be have knowledge of what you needs to be known to secure the purchase of a building site. If you are working with Realtor to purchase a home site, make sure the home builder is involved before making any commitments that do not have options to have your home builder review the building site for suitability for your home. When you find an outstanding builder and line up a good financing plan, then you can watch your dream home become a reality.

JEWELER

How to Choose a Jeweler Choosing the right jeweler is important when it's time to buy an engagement ring, graduation gift or memento marking a special occasion.

Why settle for just anyone? Qualified jewelers are everywhere -- even in the smallest towns. How do you pick the best jeweler in your area? Finding someone with excellent skills is the first thing to consider. Quality jewelers offer reasonable pricing and fantastic customer service. Do not make the mistake of basing your decision on cost alone. Jewelry professionals are skilled artisans who create beautiful pieces with their own hands. They repair, clean and adjust items with ease. They may also offer other products from off-site manufacturers. In general, they are an excellent resource. Jewelers and watch repair technicians have undergone extensive training and should have certifications to prove it. They also attend periodic classes to keep themselves current on regulations within the industry. Many jewelers travel to professional shows featuring the latest trends. They maintain their knowledge and understanding of the precious metal and gemstone markets. Technical expertise isn't the only aspect to consider. Customers who receive superior service are likely to return for future purchases. You'll want to work with someone who sees 20

more than dollar signs behind each customer. Guarantees are essential. It is a fundamental factor in establishing a long-term relationship with the public and a track record of satisfied customers. People often regard their jewelry as a kind of financial or sentimental investment for family members. A professional understands the emotional bonds symbolized by a piece of jewelry, and treats it accordingly. Many jewelers are sensitive to the needs of each customer. A discount store may offer an unbelievable price on a piece of jewelry; however, like most things in life, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Inexpensive prices are often an indicator of lower quality gemstones and metal components with lower purity. When the item breaks, it might be impossible to take it back for a repair or replacement because the seller has moved on. Some dealers focus solely on profit. Doing business with a jeweler you know and trust will make a big difference when it is time to make a significant investment in a ring, necklace or watch. He or she will make every effort to get you the best possible price without sacrificing quality. If you have been doing business with the same shop for a long time, you should expect a high level of service. The item should be guaranteed every time. Anyone can sell jewelry. Malls across America are filled with jewelry stores. But a dedicated professional jeweler doesn't just sell precious metals or gemstones. He or she brings a keen eye for the beautiful and stunning quality of each piece. It is true that price is important, but it shouldn't be your top consideration. You will get better value for your money when you do business with a jeweler you can trust -- now and 20 years from today. High-quality workmanship starts with the jewelry and ends with your satisfaction.

MATTRESS

How to Choose a Mattress A good night's sleep will have a dramatic effect on your life. Investing in a mattress is one way to improve your quality of life. Try sleeping on an old mattress. Chances are, you won't feel rested in the morning. Sleep deprivation will affect your mood, health and job performance. A new, quality mattress that provides you with a restful night's sleep is well worth the price. Don't be confused by the choices available. Take it a step at a time and you will find the perfect mattress. Answer the following questions: • Who is the bed for? You? You and a partner? • Do either of you have sleep problems other than a worn out mattress? Back, neck, or muscle pain? Long-term health issues? Night sweats? Hormonal imbalances? Sleep apnea? • What is your sleep position? Side, back, or stomach? • Do you or your partner currently toss and turn throughout the night? • Consider your bed size. Is it time to buy a bigger bed?

• "Memory" or high-density foam or latex mattresses are helpful if you have physical issues, such as skeletal pain or circulatory problems. This mattress conforms to the shape of the body. It also minimizes pressure points from the health, shoulders and hips. • Gel-infused memory foam is the latest in technology helping you sleep cooler than a standard memory foam mattress while offering the same support and comfort. • Electric adjustable beds allow sleepers to adjust the head and foot of the bed to the most comfortable position. The mattress and foundation must be specially built for the flexing motion and can be innerspring, foam or a combination. Since the flexing causes extra wear on the mattress, quality construction is very important. Mattresses not built for this purpose should not be used with an adjustable bed frame.

Purchasing a mattress is a long-term investment in your health and overall well-being. Here are a few other things to keep in mind: • Do you need a firm or soft mattress? People with a bad back, neck or leg pain, often think they need firm support to keep their spines aligned; however with today’s technology you’re able to get the needed support with many different comfort levels. • Do you sleep with another person? Mattresses made of memory foam might be beneficial, as it will give you a personalized experience without disturbing the other person's sleep. • If you or your partner has allergies, consider getting a hypoallergenic foam mattress or dust-mite resistant mattress cover. When you are looking at actual mattress options, the following are popular choices: • Pillowtop mattresses are famous for their softness; however, they do have levels of firmness. They also require a larger bottom sheet because the pillowtop adds to their extra thickness. • Coil spring construction mattresses are great choices for people who want a firm mattress. This option has the ability to keep your spine aligned. Most mattress stores can show you samples of their product lines. Choose the best construction you can afford. • Hybrid memory foam and coil spring mattresses give all the pressure relief and support of memory foam with the feel of a traditional coil spring mattress.

When shopping for a mattress, don't be afraid of lying down and trying it out. Roll over and pay attention to how your body feels. Are you comfortable?

22

A quality mattress will perform better in the long term and customer satisfaction is higher. Investing in a quality product combined with good sleep habits ensures you’ll get a good night’s sleep.

How to Choose the Best Audiologist If you or a loved one has experienced hearing loss, you are not alone. More than 38 million Americans have

some form of hearing impairment. Many people don't realize they have a problem. On average, it takes seven years before someone seeks help after first noticing a problem. The good news is that hearing loss is not difficult to treat. The first step is to visit your primary care doctor. The doctor can determine if there is a physical reason for the hearing impairment, such as an infection or ear wax buildup. Your doctor will usually recommend a secondary visit to an ear, nose and throat doctor, an audiologist, or a hearing instrument specialist. The primary care physician may give you the names of several audiologists. Research which professional will accept your insurance. Also, the audiologists may have a specialty. For example, some professionals see elderly people, others may focus on helping young people. The audiologist might have a special skill, such as cochlear implants. Consult your friends and family who have experienced hearing loss. Perhaps they have seen an audiologist in your area. They may give you an honest assessment about the quality of service and demeanor of the staff. When you have narrowed your choices down to two or three professionals, call their offices and conduct a preliminary interview. They should inform you about the audiologist's background and specialization, along with the wait time for new patients. Ensure that the professional has the proper license and reliable references to patients he has treated. Before making an appointment, consider your goals. You might want a complete hearing evaluation. Perhaps you need a fitting for a new hearing aid or a replacement. Or maybe you need more information about ear care and 24

preventing hearing loss. It is usually impossible to resolve an issue with one appointment. You will likely need follow up visits for tests, consultations and fittings, if necessary. If you have experienced hearing loss, your relationship with your audiologist should be ongoing. Make sure you are comfortable with this person. If not, keeping looking; you will need to have a rapport with this professional. Finally, it is never too early to have a child's ears checked by a qualified practitioner. Children who have a hard time hearing will have a difficult time in school until you resolve the matter. Likewise, consider having your hearing checked. There is no shame in getting help for hearing impairment. These problems do not go away by themselves. Visiting an audiologist can improve the quality of your life. How To Choose the Best Breast Cancer Center According to the U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics, about 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2013, an estimated 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 64,640 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. About 2,240 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in men in 2013. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Thus the selection of a qualified breast care center is very important. When choosing a breast care center it is important to know what type of mammogram they use, digitally or with standard film. Digital mammograms will not cost you any more than standard film. Digital mammograms are vastly superior; they are much better able to see through breast tissue. Microcalcifications can be a sign of an early cancer; these can be seen on a digital mammogram. Insist on digital! If an abnormality is discovered, how long will you have to wait to have a biopsy procedure done? A quality breast care center should be able to perform this procedure on the same day as your initial visit. The length of time to receive your biopsy report should be no more than two working days for tissue (core & stereotactic) biopsy or the next working day for fine needle aspirates. The center should be able to provide 26

several different types of biopsies such as Fine Needle Aspirate, Core Biopsy, Stereotactic Biopsy, along with other biopsies such as skin biopsies based on your needs. Second opinions should be encouraged and welcome. It should not be looked at as an insult by the physicians. Often the second opinion helps to reassure you, and helps clarify understanding of the proposed treatment plan. Finally the breast care center should be diligent about patient education and communication. Do they have a program to train you in the most effective manner in conducting your own self breast exam? The best surveillance for breast cancer is a combination of a monthly self breast exam, annual mammograms, and a clinician (Dr, PA, ARNP) exam once a year. How to Choose an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist Conducting nose, throat or ear procedures is a very delicate process, and must be performed by a doctor with specific training. Choosing an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor, also known as an otolaryngologist needs careful consideration. To find a qualified otolaryngologist you can visit the Academy of Otolaryngology’s website www.entnet.org. There you will find a list of board certified otolaryngologists in your area. Once you have narrowed down your choices to a few candidates, here are a few things to consider: Along with evaluating their education and credentials, consider that the best specialists have a long history of practicing medicine. Make sure that staff members who perform tests have the proper credentials. Ask friends, family, and workmates of their experiences. Patients who have had positive experiences will often be happy to share their doctor's contact information. Consider the physicians field of expertise and if this translates to the care that you need. There are seven areas of expertise in the field of ENT:

• • • • • • •

Allergy Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Head and Neck Laryngology (disorders of the throat) Otology/Neurotology (disease of the ear) Pediatric Otolaryngology Rhinology (disorders of the nose and sinuses)

Look for a specialist who utilizes the latest technological advances in his or her practice. Are they practicing ground breaking non-invasive procedures such as Balloon Sinuplasty? 30

Call the office before visiting your chosen otolaryngologist to verify that they're taking new patients and that their office hours will work for you. Find out how they handle emergencies when the office is closed. How well does the physician communicate with you? A good doctor should be able to evaluate and discuss your pre-operative condition, showing how he or she intends to cure your specific condition in a clear and concise manner. With a little research and planning you will have confidence in choosing your Ear, Nose and Throat doctor.

Selecting the Best Eye Doctor Eye exams are one of the most crucial things you can do to ensure your health and happiness. Even if you don't have any noticeable trouble with your eyesight, it is still important to have a routine examination. Getting your eyes checked makes it possible to discover vision issues early, when they are easier to treat. Catching and treating eye problems early will likely lead to better outcomes. Choosing a right optometrist or ophthalmologist can be a challenge. Consider these aspects when doing your research. INSURANCE If you have health or vision insurance, check the list of doctors who are covered by your plan. Insurance companies make agreements with doctors or eye care specialists to deliver services as a prearranged price. Picking an "in-network" doctor will save you money on your co-pay and out-of-pocket costs. TYPES OF DOCTORS While Optometrists do not have a medical degree, they do have specialized training in diagnosing and treating vision and eye healthrelated problems. These professionals usually receive a bachelor's degree before their four-year training programs. Optometrists can identify and diagnose a variety of eye disorders, including cataracts, glaucoma and retinal disease. They also have the ability to write prescriptions to treat certain conditions. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who treat eye diseases with medicines and surgical procedures. They have a full medical degree along with their specialized training for eye treatment. Their extensive background typically includes four years of pre-med school, four years of medical school, at least one year of an internship and three years of residency before receiving their ophthalmology license. Some ophthalmologists also receive another two years of fellowship training in the specific area they will be specializing in. Along with treating vision problems, they provide medical and surgical care, and even plastic surgery. TRAINING Ophthalmologists often specialize in certain diseases or treatments. If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, for instance, find a doctor who has experience specifically treating that disease. Be sure to ask eye doctors about their experiences treating specific diseases, conditions, and if they are fellowship trained. 32

REFERENCES Your family doctor or general practitioner may know the good eye doctors in your area. Doctors often refer patients to an eye care specialist that has the most experience treating specific needs. Friends and family can also provide helpful advice. They can tell you who they used for their previous eye exams. These people can also provide insight about any issues and tell you who works well with children. SELECTION Some people are particular about their frames, lenses or contacts. If you already know what you need -- such as glasses from a particularly designer -- look for an eye doctor who has access to that brand. You can also see their stock of eyeglass frames to make sure they carry the style you desire. When purchasing glasses, it is essential to have a wide range of products to view. Lenses and frames can vary in terms of comfort, appearance, price and quality. The better the selection, the more likely you will find that perfect pair of glasses. appearance, price and quality. Tips for Selecting a Quality Hearing Aid Hearing loss affects more than 40 million Americans. People of all ages and backgrounds experience hearing impairment or loss. Many people seek out hearing aids to help relieve the serious consequences of this condition. As a result, they lead richer, fuller lives.

Jeff Smith

These devices are highly technical, and customized to meet each individual's needs. Types of hearing loss vary widely, and are sometimes quite different from person to person.

This technology can be tailored to help with your particular kind of hearing loss. If you have an outdated hearing aid, consider upgrading to a more modern device, as this will help your hearing be as close to natural as possible. OPTIONS

Innovations in hearing aids include using digital processors to isolate and amplify the frequencies a patient needs most. Many of the latest hearing aids are so small they are practically invisible.

BLUETOOTH CONNECTIONS: You could connect wirelessly to Bluetooth electronic devices, such as smart phones. This allows you to hear phone conversations directly through your hearing aid.

STYLES The good news is that you no longer need to purchase bulky, obvious hearing aids, as they now come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The most popular hearing aids on the market fit completely within the ear canal. Other styles include half-shell, full-shell, behind-the-ear and open-fit hearing aids. Because these hearing aids come in a range of sizes and prices, consult with a specialist to help you choose the right style to fit your needs. INTERNAL ELECTRONICS The design of a hearing aid will make a large difference in cost and performance. Two devices may look similar but produce dramatically different results. The difference is in the internal electronics. Nearly all hearing aids available today are digital. They will filter out background noise, enabling the wearer to hear a conversation clearly. This technology is particularly effective in crowded settings. 34

When you are searching for a hearing aid, look for special features that will enhance your hearing and your life. Some examples include:

TELEPHONE ADAPTERS: This feature senses when you are talking on the phone and adjusts the setting to make it clearer during your conversation. DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE: You can adjust your device to pick up sound that is directly in front of you. For example, when you are having one-on-one conversations with a person, it is useful to turn the microphone on to improve your hearing. You may also change the setting to a more general one, which is useful to use during public performances or concerts. REMOTE CONTROL: Some devices allow you to adjust the settings without touching it. A remote control can change the directional microphone or amplification. No matter which option you choose, don’t be afraid or embarrassed to share any concerns or special needs with your hearing aid professional. They are there to assist you with getting your hearing as close to natural as possible, and may be aware of options you never thought possible. How to Choose Hospice Care Opting for hospice care is one of the most compassionate decisions you will ever make. Hospice provides support and comfort for people who need end-of-life care. Hospice workers will come in and care for their patients in assisted living centers, nursing homes, hospitals and residential facilities. They care for their patients wherever they call from, whether that is in their own homes or the home of friends or family. Hospice care is not only for the dying. Loved ones also benefit from hospice care, as workers (often volunteers) will support them through some of the most difficult moments in life. According to the Hospice Foundation of America, a third of all Americans choose hospice care when they are dying. And while all hospice centers are regulated by the government, each facility has meaningful differences in personnel, policies and facilities.

making the right choice in a hospice provider can make all the difference and help a patient take charge of their life. “Cedar Valley Hospice is specialized in the art of medicine, with care and compassion that seems to have been lost by many over the years,” said Dr. Deters. “Enrolling my patients with terminal illnesses in hospice made a major difference in the quality of life of the patient and helped prepare their families for the end.”

LOCATION Hospice specializes in making the patient feel as comfortable as possible. Care can take place anywhere. Patients can even receive treatment in their own homes, where they are most comfortable. Some diseases require more pain management needs than others. When pain cannot be controlled in their own home, it’s helpful for patients to stay in a hospice home facility where they can receive specialized, 24-hour access to nurses, medication, and medical equipment needed for their comfort. It is always best to consult with a doctor regarding this decision. The hospice staff will meet with the patient's physician to talk about the current symptoms, medical history and life expectancy. Then they will let you know which options are available to you. The most important thing to remember is that you have a choice in hospice providers.

COMMUNICATION Pick a hospice service that helps you feel at ease. You are going to have to ask and answer some extremely difficult questions. Death is a tough subject to discuss. Clear, caring communication is absolutely essential. A quality hospice program will give you all the time and personal attention you need to ease your mind. Part of picking hospice involves having the right feeling. If the hospice staff is personable and makes you feel comfortable, that's a good sign. Many people choose hospice care based on their gut feeling, and that's a good thing. Joe Blanch’s family puts into perspective how important it is to feel comfortable with the hospice provider you choose, and gives an idea of some of the things their hospice home provided that helped their family through this difficult time. “Cedar Valley Hospice was a blessing to my family during the last few months of our loved one’s life. The support we were given gave us the needed rest and guidance necessary to be the best caregivers to Joe in his last week of life. Joe wanted his last days to be at home, surrounded by the family that loves him. Cedar Valley Hospice helped make this happen. We had everything we needed to keep him comfortable and he passed peacefully on March 2, 2014,” said Kelly Turner and other members of the Blanch family.

At Cedar Valley Hospice, medical director Dr. Michael Deters states that

REFERRALS Every patient who receives hospice treatment must be qualified by a physician. Usually, this means there is a life expectancy of six months or less. Since some physicians may hesitate to broach the subject of hospice care, you may need to bring it up yourself. Ask whether hospice care would be appropriate and which services might be most helpful to ease the end-of-life process. You can also approach a hospice facility directly to ask about their services. They will help you determine which care is most appropriate. Hospice care has been growing since the 1990s. Many people are realizing that it is possible to die with peace and dignity. Hospice makes the end-of-life experience better for the patient and loved ones. Article contributed by Cedar Valley Hospice

How to Choose In-Home Care Many people as they age prefer to stay in the place they call home, whether that is where they raised children, a condo where they downsized or even a retirement community they moved into several years ago. As health needs change, though, care may be needed to make that preference a reality. Inhome care providers offer assistance that makes it possible for older adults to keep living at home. WHY IN-HOME CARE Bringing someone into your home to provide care and companionship for a few hours at a time is typically less expensive than moving to assisted living. Choosing the right organization requires doing a little bit of research. How long have they been in business? Some companies on the market today are for-profit franchises. Others are non-profit mission driven organizations. Ask about the company’s experience and hiring practices. See if they will provide references from current clients or client family members. Talk to your loved one's primary care physician to help you understand your choices. The doctor can help you select a provider and help you determine the level of care required. This professional may even have referrals to give you. After speaking to several in-home care providers, you can compare the range of services they offer. Typically, they will fall into three categories: NURSING CARE Providers vary greatly in terms of whether they provide any certified nursing care. Some have registered or licensed nurses who can help with chronic condition management. Others provide care with certified nursing assistants who can provide more simple tasks such as medication reminders and blood sugar monitoring. Always inquire about the medical qualifications of any in-home care providers you are considering. All workers should have the proper training, degrees and certifications. If you are unclear about the exact level of medical care you or a loved one will require, ask your physician for advice. COMPANION CARE Caregivers can help with daily grooming, mobility and any special diet requirements. They can help prepare meals or run simple errands. You might have them help clean out closets, fold laundry, put away dishes, sort mail and other household tasks. An in-home caregiver also provides a friendly face and good conversation as well as general care. The caregiver might sing along as you play the piano, or vice versa. She or he could read aloud, discuss daily news or play a board game.

Quality in-home care providers understand that patients also need mental stimulation and human contact in order to stay well. PERSONAL TECHNOLOGIES A few in-home care providers now offer simple technologies that help keep you safe at home, even when a caregiver can’t be there. New versions of personal emergency response pendants offer additional support, such as fall detectors, that can automatically call for help when a problem is sensed. Additionally, medication dispensers help patients take their medications as scheduled to keep them healthy. THINGS TO REMEMBER Before entering a contract, understand the services that will be provided. You want to make sure you are getting what you need without paying for services that are not required. You and any family caregivers should be comfortable with the people who work for the company. In-home caregivers will quickly become part of your life, especially as they enter and exit the house. Get referrals from people who have been in a similar situation. The best in-home care provider is about finding the right combination of services. Once you have the right company, the patient will receive companionship, comfort and cost savings that make in-home care a fantastic choice. Article contributed by Western Home Communities

How to Choose a Medical Group One of the most difficult challenges for the health care consumer is the ability to effectively and independently navigate the health care system. This is why it is vital to partner with a medical group that promotes cooperation, communication, and provides a means of increasing patient education. The American Medical Group Association, a trade association representing medical groups says it is important to demonstrate integrated care, teamwork across specialties, continuous improvement of patient-care systems and accountability for clinical-care outcomes. What are some things to look for when making this all important decision of choosing a medical group? Paul Schafer, the practice plan administrator at Buffalo based UB/ MD Physicians Group says, “”We provide quality care and focus on the patient experience. The bottom line on what separates one medical group from another is the relationship you have with your patients.” Finding a medical group that strives for a “patient first” environment where you can rely on high quality care personalized to you and your family is of upmost importance.

• How easy is it to get to the medical offices? • Is the medical group approved by my current health plan?

• What specialties does this medical group offer? • How long does it take to get test results back? • What online information and services do they provide? • Can I easily get my medical records if needed? Choosing the right medical group for the needs of you and your family is an important decision. With a little planning, asking the right questions, you can have confidence when it is your time to choose. Article contributed by Cedar Valley Medical Specialists

Other questions that should factor into your decision are: • How is the medical group viewed in the community? Do they have a good “word of mouth” reputation? • Do the physicians in the medical group have access to the latest facilities and technologies? • Which hospitals does the medical group have access to?

How to Choose a Certified Optician If you are having trouble with your eyeglasses, there is no need to tolerate the discomfort. It is important to fix the problem right away. A certified optician can help you. Choosing the right professional will make a big difference in your quality of life. When your glasses are uncomfortable or your optical prescription isn't followed precisely, then your eyewear isn't going to do its job. That's why it's important to choose the right optician. CERTIFICATION Filing vision prescriptions is a complex job that requires frequent training. Lens materials and manufacturing procedures are constantly changing and improving. A certified optician should be abreast of industry standards. Ask what certifications your optician holds in your state, along with what kind of training he or she has received. Certified opticians understand they are in a high-precision job. They should appreciate that you are taking the time to ask questions. SELECTION Take a look around their optical displays. A quality optician will have a large variety of glass frame and contact choices in a range of price points. While budget is always important, you might find that an upgrade will be worth the additional money. Consider how frequently you will use your eyewear. It's a good idea to ask about the advantages of various features -- from color changing lenses, scratch-resistant coating for glasses to various brands of contacts. Think about what will work best for your lifestyle. If you have a favorite brand or designer, call ahead to see if your optician can provide them.

COMFORT The best opticians will guide you toward products that are easy to use and maintain. Comfort levels vary according to each person. Some people prefer metal frames, while others like the look and feel of plastic frames. Opticians will adjust the fit of your frames so they are not too tight or loose on your face. If your current glasses are leaving red marks on your face, they need to be adjusted. The glasses should not feel awkward or bothersome on your nose or behind your ears. If you have contact lenses, you should feel comfortable wearing them. Proper cleaning is crucial. Your optician can help recommend the best products that will help maintain your contact lenses. An assistant will likely demonstrate the proper cleaning technique. Anyone who wears glasses or contacts knows the importance of eyewear. Along with your eye doctor, an optician is an important part of the team who will care for your vision. Make the time and effort to choose the right one. How to Choose a Physical Therapist Physical therapy helps alleviate pain. It focuses on treating musculoskeletal disorders. For example, people with back pain can receive physical therapy to strengthen the core muscles in their back. Not only will they feel better, patients may also emerge from physical therapy with a restored, functional body. other injuries. Someone with a reattached finger will need to practice with a physical therapist to regain feeling and movement. A person who has been incapacitated for an extended period may need physical therapy to regain their functionality. Insurance companies will likely have requirements. You may have to choose a therapy that is in-network, rather than out-of-network. Your insurance may also limit the amount of visits they cover. Once you have narrowed your search to a few potential candidates, inquire about the physical therapist's previous work history. Don't be afraid of asking directly about their success rates and potential problems. Most patients visit physical therapists for chronic pain from injuries or if they recently underwent surgery. People with pain in their backs, knees, neck, shoulder or other joints can receive benefits from finding a physical therapist. Insurance companies often agree about these benefits. Most companies require patients to try physical therapy before turning to expensive surgery to fix the problem. In fact, physical therapy can actually negate the need for surgical treatment. After surgery, physical therapy might serve as part of the aftercare and recovery process. For example, when you have surgery to repair a rotator cuff, a therapist can play a huge part in a successful recovery. People with degenerative disc problems in their backs will benefit from a physical therapy regimen. It can help ease pressure and pain in their lower back. Normally, a problem like this requires surgery, but physical therapy can help patients regain a full range of motion. Physical therapists also provide the best remedy for 44

Also, contact your state board of physical therapy to see if any complaints have been filed against the professional you are considering. The best physical therapists will provide emotional support as well. Treatment and recovery is very hard work, especially for patients in severe pain. How to Choose a Skilled Nursing Facility for Your Loved One So you’ve just been released from the hospital, but you aren’t quite ready to be on your own at home. Where can you find the care you need? Skilled Care Nursing Services are available after surgery or a hospitalization when you may need to regain your strength before going home. Such services provide personalized care to patients who are suffering from acute health incidents, severe illness, injury, or are recovering from an elective surgery. While it can be a difficult and often unexpected decision for individuals to make, finding a skilled nursing facility doesn’t have to be a challenge. However, Wwith hundreds of choices available, it can be difficult to sort through all of your options. As a consumer, you have a choicefor short-term rehabilitation. Your best choices are facilities that have onsite rehabilitation therapy services, pleasant and clean living environments, and high scores from state agencies such as the nursing-home regulatory agency or department of health. The Skilled nursing staff are required to complete a formal certification process and facilities are evaluated annually. Your loved one will need reassurance that he or she will be safe and well taken care of by a highly skilled nursing staff. Select a facility close to your loved one's family and friends. It should be easy to see your loved one. Frequent visits will help ease the transition from independent living to a skilled nursing environment. Speak to current residents and their families to get a good assessment of the facility. Family members will likely provide the most unbiased and unvarnished opinion of the facility. Most high-quality skilled nursing facilities are significant investments. They provide a much higher level of care and so they cost more. You may want to talk with an attorney who specializes in nursing facility cases for advice on cost, as well as quality of care. Be informed! When choosing your Skilled Care Services, you should visit several facilities. Reputable centers will have no problems with scheduling interviews with staff or giving tours of the living areas and grounds. If a facility doesn't allow you to see these areas or have a meeting with the director, it should be dropped from your list. 46

Cleanliness, cheerful decor and happy residents neatly dressed are symbols of a quality facility. The decision to transition your loved one into a particular facility is not permanent. If your family member is not receiving good care or shows signs of abuse, you have the right to remove him or her. Frequent visits are important so you can monitor the health and wellbeing of your loved one. See him or her at different times of the day to verify the level of care. As a transitional option, before going home after a short-term skilled stay, it is beneficial to try other styles of living. For example, Assisted Living might be an appropriate transitional stage before going back home, or to an independent living lifestyle. On the other hand, sometimes a Skilled Nursing stay may transition a person into longterm nursing care. For this reason, looking at both stand-alone Skilled Care providers and providers that are part of a Retirement Community, or continuum of care, are also important factors to consider. You can never be too choosy when it comes to your loved one. Take all the time you need when searching for Skilled Nursing Services. Finding the best ‘fit’ you can afford will give you peace of mind. How to Choose a Urologist Below are some questions to ask the primary care provider when it is time to select the urologist that will deliver the best possible patient care.

Most patients do not realize that they have a choice when selecting an urologist. Since the relationship between the primary care provider and the patient is intimate, it is recommended to talk through all options with their family physician. The primary care provider will understand when it comes to your health, the patient needs to be a part of the conversation.

1) What kind of education and credentials do they have? 2) Have they been continuing their education in their specialty? 3) How long have they been practicing medicine in this field? 4) Since urologists have a variety of sub-specialties, do they have experience in the area of need? 5) What technology do they employ when performing a procedure? 6) Since healthcare can be expensive, is there a local option? 7) How is their bedside manner? Ask if your physician these questions and talk through them. Becoming a well-informed patient may yield less out-of-pocket dollars and a more pleasant experience. Once you come across the urologist that is right for you, stop seeking, schedule your periodic visits and have peace of mind. Article contributed by Cedar Valley Medical Specialists

RETIREMENT LIVING

Selecting the Best Retirement Community for Your Needs These days, more Americans are remaining active into their retirement years. They are searching for communities that match their lifestyles and goals. If you are in the market for a retirement community, there are plenty of things to consider. This retirement community will become your home. It is important to choose a vibrant place, with plenty of parking and recreational activities. Here are some aspects to consider before making this financial and lifestyle commitment.

Community Activities and Visitors Many senior citizens want to keep their energy levels up during their retirement years. They are more health conscious and see how an active lifestyle leads to a long life. Many seniors enjoy golf, tennis, swimming and walking. Any prospective retirement community should have easy access to such activities. Other seniors enjoy arts and crafts, board games, dancing and organized activities. Taking part in social events offers opportunities to develop new and close friendships. Research what kinds of social events are organized within the retirement community. Also, find out if the community has ample opportunities for residents to travel to theaters, museums, historic sites or shopping malls together. Parking is another important factor yet sometimes overlooked. Are garages available for your personal vehicle? And what about when your family and friends visit – is convenient parking available for them? Speaking of friends and family, this will be your home. You’ll want to find out if the community offers private lounges or other areas where you can entertain guests. And make sure it’s ok for your grandchildren to spend the night!

Medical Care and Safety Know the location of the closest hospitals, doctors, ambulance services and other personnel. You may wish to restrict your search to communities located near your preferred physician or other service providers.

Any prospective community should have a formal emergency plan in place. In addition, ask about building access and security. check to see if the retirement unit has custom safety features, such as railings in the bathrooms and entranceways.

Pet Policies Pet policies are another feature to consider when investigating potential retirement communities. Some communities will allow you to bring your pet to live with you while others will not. So if you have a pet you don't want to leave behind, you may be able to bring it with you. Many communities now recognize the health benefits of having pets. Additionally, a park, walking trail or nearby dog walking area will benefit you and your animal companion, particularly if your pet requires daily exercise. Taking a walk each day will benefit both of you.

Churches, Libraries and Schools Consider how close the community is to schools, sports facilities, and other sites that produce a large amount of traffic volumes and noise levels. Keep your preferences in mind. Do you like an area with hustle and bustle, or is peace and quiet your goal? Also, think about where the nearest libraries and churches are located, as well as whether public transportation is available. Find out if the community provides its own transportation for residents. Most do operate and maintain a small fleet of minivans and buses. It may be included in monthly costs. Be sure to find out if transportation is available for you.

The Community Current residents will give you a feel for their level of satisfaction with the community. Talk to them about their experiences and seek candid reviews of the amenities and staff. After all, it is important you feel confident that you have selected a retirement community that fits your personal needs and lifestyles. Take the time to research what is available in the town where you want to live. Make sure you tour and see for yourself. By performing your due diligence, you will undoubtedly find a warm, welcoming place for your next home. You will be able to build lasting friendships and have the support you need to enjoy these years. Article contributed by Western Home Communities

ROOFING

How to Choose a Roofer Putting a new roof on your home can increase its value. It is also a necessity in the event of a leakage or if a severe storm has torn shingles off your house. Professional roofing contractors are the most qualified people to perform this work. They will install a new roof safely and effectively. Roofers will provide a warranty for their work. If there are any problems with your new roof in the future, they will fix the problem. Your first step in finding a reliable roofer is to ask your family, friends and neighbors if they have recommendations. You can also look on the Internet for roofing contractors in your area. Some websites offer lists of professionals, along with reviews of their work. Personal recommendations will give you the best information. Be sure to focus on the quality of work as well as the cleanup process. You don't want scraps of shingles and nails left over after the contractors have gone home. Don't hire professionals who leave debris after they are gone. Pick someone with a long track record in your community. Some contractors travel the country looking for work. They appear after a community experiences a natural disaster or heavy storm. These contractors are making money from the insurance

52

claims. If you hire one of them, they cannot provide realistic guarantees for their work. After all, they may be on the other side of the country if your roof starts to leak again. Becoming acquainted with local contractors is especially important if you live in an area prone to high winds or hurricanes. It is good to know who to call if your house needs repair work. Once you have contact information for several roofing contractors, call them. Inquire about the company's background and how long they have been in business. Generally, a good roofer should offer a guarantee of anywhere from five to 12 years. If the company has been in business for less than five years, it will be difficult to determine the quality of their work. Continue to ask questions about time frames and estimates. You should always get a written estimate before proceeding with any work. Communicating with the contractor will let him know that you will be taking a hands-on approach to this project. Find out if the roofers recommend standard or architectural shingles, what they will do if they find damaged decking, and when they might be available to start. You should also ask about the warranty and whether you can have it confirmed in writing. Every professional who works on your property should be licensed and bonded. Insurance is particularly important for roofing contractors. They should be able to cover any damages they might cause to your property. It is also essential that workers are covered under their insurance as well, in the event someone is injured during the job. Before work commences, you must receive a written contract from the roofer. Read it over carefully. It will state the type of materials to be used, what the work will entail and the final cost. Following these tips will help you find the best roofing contractor in your community. You can rest comfortably knowing that you made the right decision.

How To Choose a Sewing Machine We get asked a lot about how to buy a sewing machine. There are no simple answers so we are going to give you some tips to use when you are ready to make that purchase. We understand there are many things to consider; such as brands, features, price range, and most importantly-SERVICE! BUY FROM A DEALERSHIP AND NOT A BIG CHAIN STORE: There are many brands of sewing machines out there and you will need to decide what works best for you. You might be thinking “why should I buy from a dealership”? Well, there are a number of reasons. First of all is SERVICE. If you buy from a dealer, you can sew on several machines and compare features so that you can make a more informed decision on what is right for you. Secondly, the dealer will make sure you understand all the features and how to maximize the use of your machine. Consider them as a resource for assistance, advice, and ask them about their experience. If you would choose to buy from a large chain store or off the internet, then who will be there to answer your questions? You tend to get what you pay for when you purchase a machine. It’s important to set a budget and buy the best possible machine for your money.

and do they have a service department in their store? These are all important things to remember when you are planning to purchase that sewing machine. You should also ask about warranties, maintenance schedules, accessories and attachments that come with your machine. Check out the optional attachments for future projects too. If you are new to sewing, remember to start out slowly so that you can get used to your machine. The more you sew, the easier it gets and the more confidence you will gain. Sewing is FUN! Happy stitching! Article contributed by Your Sewing Center

When you sew on a machine there are several things to look for. Does it sew smoothly on the types of fabrics you usually use? Look for even stitches and no bunching or weaving and also look at the tension too. Is it easy to operate and will the machine do all the things you want it to do? Is the staff friendly and helpful? This is really one of the most important factors as to where you buy your machine. Let’s talk about price. Should you buy a less expensive model or a top of the line model? Again, you need to look at what you want to use the machine for and also think long term. What future projects might you be planning and will your machine be able to accommodate them? So put some thoughtful consideration as to what you want.
