FUNERAL HOME

How to Choose a Funeral Home your guests. After all, the funeral home facilities are like your home during your services.

The average person will make funeral arrangements 2-3 times in his or her lifetime. With many different options for final disposition and the amount of time that may lapse between these experiences, most of us will not become an “expert” in this area. And, yet, this is one of the most significant occasions that we will ever plan. How do you appropriately and cost-effectively commemorate a lifetime in the context of an obituary, ceremony, or monument? No two people are the same and, therefore, no two funeral service experiences should be the same. Selecting a funeral home is something that should ideally occur before the need arises. HAVE “THE” CONVERSATION Conversations about funeral homes and types of services should not be avoided. Everyone will die – hopefully later than earlier – but knowing what the individual wanted makes the experiences much easier and more meaningful. Does your loved one want a traditional service followed by earth burial? How about a traditional service followed by cremation? Or, maybe they didn’t want any kind of public viewing and would prefer a memorial service? If they select cremation, what happens to the cremated remains following services? The only way to know for sure is to have the conversation.

PAGE 2

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS Many people attempt to compartmentalize funeral services into “traditional” or “cremation”. The two are not mutually exclusive. Your funeral home should be able to meet your family’s specific wishes. If you would like to have a traditional service followed by cremation, does your funeral home offer the option of a cremation casket or a ceremonial/rental casket? If you choose cremation, do they have an on-site crematory or will your loved one be taken to another facility? LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Many people elect to have their visitation at the funeral home and, in many instances, the funeral or memorial service as well. Check out the funeral homes to see what their facilities have to offer. Is there adequate parking? Is the building accessible for people of all ages and mobility needs? How many people can be seated with direct visibility during a service? Do they have a quality sound system or keyboard for music? Do they have space for the family to offer refreshments? Is there a space for younger family members during the visitation? Is the facility sufficiently climate controlled? These are issues that should all be addressed and available so that you can present the most inviting and accommodating facilities for

THE COURIER

HOW MUCH WILL THE DESIRED SERVICES COST? There can be a great variation in pricing from one funeral home to the next. Do your homework before the need exists. All funeral homes are required by law to provide you with a general price list (GPL) of services and merchandise upon request. Request the GPL from all of the funeral homes that you are considering. Be sure, though, that you are making apples to apples comparisons. If the funeral homes offer funeral packages, be sure to compare the types of services and quality of merchandise included in each package. You will see for yourself that prices for the same services can vary over $1,000 between area funeral homes. PRE-ARRANGE AND PRE-FUND YOUR SERVICES Strongly consider pre-arranging and pre-funding your funeral services! You will, likely, be able to take advantage of cost savings by pre-arranging that won’t be available to you “at need” by asking the funeral home to match prices. Most pre-arrangements can be funded through installments where many funeral homes will expect payment at time of services “at need”. A prepaid funeral is considered a protected asset in the event that a member of your family faces the need to qualify for Title XIX. Most importantly, by pre-funding your funeral, you can guarantee pricing on services and merchandise. No matter when death occurs after pre-funding your funeral, you will not pay anything for the guaranteed goods and services included in your pre-arrangement at the time of death. The only

HOW TO CHOOSE 2016

www.wcfcourier.com

exception would be third party charges. Third party charges are those expenses paid on behalf of the family such as: minister or musician honorarium, opening and closing charges for the grave space at the cemetery, family floral arrangements, certified copies of the death certificate or luncheon expenses. The funeral home pays these directly so that the family has the convenience of one payment and the assurance that all expenses have been paid at the conclusion of services. REPUTATION AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE When you are entrusting someone you love into the care of another person, it is advisable to know the reputation of the funeral home and its funeral directors. Ask people whose opinions you respect about their personal experiences. When you have gone to visitations and funeral services, what have been your personal observations? Have the staff members been respectful, caring and professional? Was the appearance of the deceased peaceful, restful and comforting? Did they offer their attention to every fine detail? IN CONCLUSION As with any major investment in life, your approach to planning a funeral will greatly impact the outcome. If you delay the decision until you have no other choice, then you will probably pay more and/or may later wish that you had done something differently. Death is an inevitability whether or not you prepare. Take the time, now, so that you may live and die without regrets. Article contributed by Parrott & Wood

ARCHITECT

How to Choose an Architectural - Build Process

You decided to build, expand, or make changes to your current building. Whether an industrial, institutional or commercial building the process can be a complicated one. How do I turn my concept into my completed project? The process will require you to ask a few questions of yourself before making a list of potential firms, interviewing them and ultimately choosing a building partner. Design/Build vs Design-Bid-Build There are two basic processes to consider when building. They are Design/Build, and Design-Bid-Build. You will need to choose one. With a Design/Build company there will be a single point of responsibility. The architect, designer and contractor are on the same team and provide unified recommendations. All decisions are reviewed as a whole by this type of entity. The Design/Build company is working in tandem with you and can easily work with you to modify any changes during the building process. PAGE 4

THE COURIER

The Design-Bid-Build approach will require you to choose three separate companies; an architectural firm, interior design company and a general contractor. These companies will have to work together while you coordinate their communication. You will be responsible to decide which professional’s proposal provides the best solution as they may see things differently. With a Design/Build company statistics show that the unit cost is 6.1% lower, construction speed is 12% faster, and deliver speed is 33.5% faster.* Even with these powerful statistics, you may find the Design-Bid-Build approach the viable option because you cannot find a Design/ Build company that marries all of the necessary professional services to your satisfaction. Building a Team Now you have decided on your preference of Design/Build company vs. Design-Bid-Build approach. Make a list of the local businesses to

HOW TO CHOOSE 2016

interview. If you choose a Design/Build company all of these questions will be answered at a single interview. With the Design-Bid-Build approach it will require you to meet with multiple professionals at different times. To find the appropriate company or companies check with your local Better Business Bureau, local building department, appropriate state entities and ask for recommendations. You will need to have questions prepared for each of the business segments. With a Design/Build company the Architect, Interior Designer, and General Contractor are all in the same company. With the Design-Bid-Build approach you will start with the Architect. There are technical questions that should be asked for each area of expertise, namely a business resume. • Education and State Licensing • Number of years practicing • Professional accreditation and credentials • Referral and review of finished projects and previous scope of work performed • Number of completed commercial, industrial or institutional projects Once you are satisfied the company you are interviewing has the technical background, respect of past customers, cleared by government agencies and the proper experience, you will begin to share your ideas and needs. You will then receive feedback on how they will capture your thoughts, and convert to a visual on paper. In the final step they will execute and deliver. Don't underestimate the fundamental thought; "Did you have chemistry?" "Did you click?" "Did you find a comfortable trusted partner to proceed with your project?" You have reached the end of the process. You should be ready to partner with a business that has grasped your concept and is ready to complete your building! *Source: Construction Industry Institute (CII)/ Penn State research comprising 351 projects ranging from 5000, 2.5 million square feet. FURNITURE STORE

How to Choose Your Furniture Store

Americans everywhere are finding it harder and harder to decide on where and what to buy to furnish their homes. With the overwhelming influx of imported goods from Asia, the Mid East , Mexico and parts of South America the looks of furniture and accessories have never been more affordable, AND...with much more selection. While just 10-20 years ago the most popular wood and finishes for middle America was OAK, now oak is losing ground while darker finishes on woods like cherry, maple and mahogany are becoming very popular. In Iowa oak was once 80% of the wood furniture market. Today it is less than 30%. Plus, the far east hard woods such as mindy and acacia are extremely stylish! With style they also offer quality and lower prices in most cases. Just like the costs of electronics have come down since the 1970's with importing from places like China, most furniture is less PAGE 6

expensive than it was in the hay days of retail furniture from the 1960s through the late 70s. Still, you decide if you want to buy style and fashion at a lower price and then replace it more often....or buy higher quality and keep your look for years and years. The industry is really able to help both sections of this market with furniture that is a true value. Even a $399 sofa can be a value if constructed properly and your expectation is replacing it within four to five years. In 1959 Mr. Van Elslander opened his first Art Van Furniture store. His founding philosophy was to provide the community with quality furniture at great prices, with always high standards of customer service. After 55 years, The Art Van familyrun business operates 47 Art Van Furniture Stores and 54 PureSleep Mattress Stores in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Art Van Furniture is the Midwest #1 Furniture Brand with almost 1 billion in annual sales. Cedar Falls and Coralville locations are the first 2 franchises in Iowa.

Since furniture can be a high service purchase most Americans have better success correcting their problems or satisfying the warranty issues when they buy from their home town companies. A major reason you do not see the "Big Boxes" like Sam's Club, Costco and the building centers offer large selections of furniture is because they are not equipped to handle the service that may come into play after your purchase. Even though furniture costs less than 20 years ago you still need to know the differences between things such as: solid wood frames, density of the foam in your sofa cushions, whether there are coils in the seat cushion or zigger springs vs. drop-in coils in the seat decks. When it comes to wood goods, ask about solid woods vs. veneers. Dowels and drawer glides, English vs. French dovetail joints and how good is the finish and top coat over your next dining table or bedroom dresser are all important questions to get answered before

you purchase.. If the store you shop at or the person helping make your selection can not answer these questions it may be wise to go to another retailer who has the experienced, trusted staff you will appreciate long after the price you paid is forgotten. Our world is changing at a record pace, we are a true global economy, and with these changes your disposal dollar is being asked for from almost every category. New cars, a new cell phone or computer, maybe a different refrigerator or big screen TV is on your next list to purchase. Your home is most folks most valuable asset, so keep in mind that we all spend more time there than almost anywhere else..... quality furniture, mattresses and accessories help you enjoy those many hours in comfort and style... so shop wisely. Fighting Age-ism

Rebecca brought her son along to the doctor’s visit. Even though it only was a routine check-up on her blood pressure, she likes to include her family in her life. At 86, she welcomes time with her family whenever she can. Yet, here was her doctor talking as though she wasn’t even in the room. “I wanted to grab her by her lapels and yell, ‘Look, I’m the patient!’ I was irked that she was talking only to him and treating me as though I was invisible.” The Times, They Aren’t a Changin’ In 44 BC, Rome’s great orator Cicero is quoted with this, “Old PAGE 8

age will only be respected if it fights for itself, maintains its own rights, avoids dependence on anyone, and asserts control over its own to the last breath.” From that time to this, society has struggled with how to treat, understand, and incorporate seniors (who generally dislike being called ‘seniors’). While it may be a global societal problem from ancient times, it plays out in every elder/family relationship today. The smallest of decisions add or subtract from individualism and self-reliance. Especially an American Issue While it may be a global issue, elders in the United States will

THE COURIER

recognize the struggle as personal. This country prides itself in its independence with its people embodying that principle through their attitudes and lifestyles. Rugged individualism, which settled the wilderness, conflicts with the current American sterotype of elders being feeble, less than lucid, and to be ignored or tolerated. What can be done? Here are some helpful hints for the everyday process of aging and health. • Talk with your family. This may prove awkward for some people and their families. Communication is, however,

HOW TO CHOOSE 2016

www.wcfcourier.com

the best way to improve any situation and clear up any misunderstandings. • Surround yourself with the right crowd. Friends who experience “age-ism” daily can prove a great support group. More than just a shoulder to cry on, they can offer helpful suggestions on what has worked for them. • Find “independent thinkers.” Retirement communities today are leading the way in treating elders with respect. Places like Friendship Village even feature individual orientation in their advertising. Lisa Gates, President of Friendship Village underscored that approach, “We have long tailored our services, pricing, and activities to the needs of each person here. Sometimes it seems like we have hundreds of different daily routines in place! Plus, we really can help advocate for our residents if a company or individual is devaluing them or their contribution.” • Value honesty. There are times when we aren’t as aware, active, or safe as we should be. That’s especially true as we age. Acknowledge that. A concerned caregiver has the advantage of viewing each situation from an objective vantage point. Elders can make the conversation more pleasant if they allow observations and opinions without becoming defensive. Everyone ages. It is how we preserve individual value and dignity that matters. Choosing Hospice

PHOTO: Cedar Valley Hospice offers the area’s only Hospice Home, located at 2001 Kimball Ave. in Waterloo. It features six private master bedrooms, a patio and outdoor garden, children’s play room and a kitchen and dining area featuring fresh baked cookies.

Most people have heard about hospice care or know a family member or friend who has benefitted from it. Yes, hospice care is to help a person and their loved ones at the end of life – which is why it isn’t usually a topic of discussion unless it needs to be. However, not every hospice is the same and it’s important to decide which hospice you want to care for you or your loved one and let your physician know these wishes. Cedar Valley Hospice is unique in many ways. We are a not-for-profit agency started by a local group of grassroots volunteers who saw a need for dignified, end-of-life care. Also, we’ve been in the area for over 37 years, caring for your family, friends and neighbors.

But there’s so much more to know. For example, did you know that hospice provides what the majority of people say they want at the end of life? This includes: excellent pain management, comfort and support for the patient and caregivers. Nobody prefers to think about dying. This is why one of the most common sentiments shared by families who have been helped by the care and compassion of Cedar Valley Hospice is, “We wish we had called sooner.” “I think we waited too late because we all thought it was something Dad was going to overcome,” said Tim Moses of Waterloo. “We thought the pain was going to go away and that he would pull through. Plus my

At Cedar Valley Hospice, our skilled interdisciplinary team is made up of a doctor, registered nurse, aide, social worker, spiritual care counselor, grief counselor and volunteer who provide high-quality, compassionate care. 3. Anyone can make a referral. 4. Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans. 5. Hospice provides medications and medical equipment needed to keep a person safe and comfortable. 6. A person can receive hospice care as long as they meet eligibility requirements. Some people graduate from hospice because the care they receive alleviates their symptoms so they no longer qualify to be on the program. 7. Most of Cedar Valley Hospice’s care is provided at home but hospice is also available in nursing homes, assisted living and long term care facilities or in a hospital. We also offer the area’s only Hospice Home, located at 2001 Kimball Ave. in Waterloo. 8. We can provide complementary therapies, such as music and massage, to bring additional comfort to patients and families. 9. We also offer grief support to the entire community and a special program (Eucalyptus Tree) for children who are grieving the loss of a loved one. 10. We serve nearly 1,000 hospice patients annually plus more through our grief, Cedar Aids Support System and LINK Palliative Care programs – all in a 13-county service area.

mom was calling at all times of the night and day – stressed, worried and missing her own medication, making her also very weak.” When the Moses family made that call to Cedar Valley Hospice, everything changed. Pressure was taken off of the mother as a caregiver, as well as the kids and even Tim’s dad. “It was amazing the things their team was able to do to care and comfort my dad and our family,” said Tim. “They answered all our questions and provided information which allowed us to relax, come together and be closer. Nobody should have to go through this process alone, and I’m so glad we didn’t have to.”

How to Choose the Best Audiologist Have you or a loved one been experiencing a hearing loss? If so, an audiologist can help. More than 38 million Americans have some form of hearing impairment. And many people don’t even realize they have a problem because hearing loss can happen gradually, unless it is caused by an accident. On average, it takes seven years before someone seeks help after first noticing a problem. And usually, the condition only worsens with time and without treatment. The good news is, hearing loss is not difficult to treat. The first step is to visit your primary care doctor. The doctor can determine if there is a physical reason for the hearing impairment, such as an infection or ear wax buildup. If the loss isn’t caused by an infection or other easily treated methods, your doctor will usually recommend a secondary visit to an ear, nose and throat doctor or an audiologist. Your primary care physician may provide several audiologists to choose from. It’s time to do some research. Audiologists may have a specialty. For example, some professionals see elderly patients while others may focus on helping young people. The audiologist might have a special skill, such as cochlear implants. Consult your friends and family who have experienced hearing loss. Perhaps they have seen an audiologist in your area and can give you a good recommendation. When you have narrowed your choices down to two or three professionals, call their offices and conduct a preliminary interview. Before anything else, make sure they accept new patients as well as your insurance. You don’t want to spend a lot of time on an audiologist you won’t be able to see. They should inform you about the audiologist's background and specialization, along with the wait time for new patients. Before making an appointment, consider your goals. You might want a complete hearing evaluation. Perhaps you need a fitting for a new hearing aid or a replacement. Or maybe you need more information about ear care and preventing hearing loss. It is usually impossible to resolve an issue with one appointment. Follow up visits for tests, consultations and fittings, will likely be necessary. If you have experienced hearing loss, then your relationship with your audiologist should be ongoing. Make sure you are comfortable with this person. While you’re at it, it is never too early to have a child's ears checked by a qualified practitioner. Children who have a hard time hearing will have a difficult time in school, and the sooner the condition is tended to, the better it is for the child. There is no shame in getting help for hearing impairment. These problems do not go away by themselves. Visiting an audiologist can improve the quality of your life. INSURANCE

How to Choose Farm Insurance

Not all insurances are the same and not all policies will cover what you need. When it comes to farm insurance, you will want to make sure you are getting the coverage you need for the most protection for your farm and equipment. Picking the right insurance policy for your farm is vital to the success of your business. Unlike farm equipment or a planting schedule, most farmers don't have a lot of knowledge about the insurance industry. Yet if they experience an accident or mishap on their farm, a solid insurance policy can put their business back on a solid footing. When you are in the market for farm insurance, here are some things you need to keep in mind. INCREASED LIABILITY With the farming industry changing at a rapid pace, you may have more exposure to the PAGE 16

prospects of lawsuits and damages. Contact with the general public, for instance, brings risk. Roadside produce stands, agri-tourism events and even "pick it yourself" fields bring a potential for liability if someone is injured or harmed on your property. You might also be held liable if someone gets sick from eating your crops. Every farm is different, with various sizes and types of operations. You might need different coverage from other farms. Have a meeting with your insurance agent to talk about your changing needs when it comes to liability coverage. The agent should develop a customized solution specifically for your needs. KNOW YOUR POLICY Farm policies are very different from other insurance products. It is important to understand your coverage.

THE COURIER

When you meet with your insurance agent, ask the following questions: • If my house is on the farm, does farm insurance cover it for damage? • What types of damage to my farm equipment does the insurance policy cover? • Does the policy include all the barns and buildings on the farm? • How are my livestock covered? Policies are different. Some may cover livestock, buildings and equipment, while others will provide coverage from disasters, floods and other harm. Find an insurance agent who is specially trained to look for risks that exist on farms. You should identify these things and insure against them before they happen. It is better to be prepared rather than feel regret.

HOW TO CHOOSE 2016

FIRM STRENGTH Make sure you are dealing with an insurance company that has a strong balance sheet and good reputation. Insurance companies receive ratings based on their finances. A good agent will discuss these ratings with you. It is equally important to understand the company's reputation for dealing with claims. Good insurance companies handle farm claims quickly, fairly and professionally. It is always a smart idea to ask other farmers in your area about insurance companies. They may even have some recommendations for you. Knowing how to protect your farm, equipment and livestock, and getting the right coverage will protect you as well as giving you peace of mind. Choosing a Credit Union

A credit union is a fantastic way to avoid the hassles often experienced from conventional banks. In these economic times, many people are finding out that credit unions have a lot to offer. It is a great place to find a financial solution while helping your community. Credit unions are typically nonprofit operations owned by their members. They are not owned by individuals or conglomerates. The banks charge less in fees than for-profit banks. Any dividends go to the members instead of shareholders. These days, credit unions are a good deal. They usually offer better interest rates on savings accounts and competitive rates on various loans. You might get a fantastic rate on a student loan, mortgage, auto loan or credit card. Also, the federal government PAGE 18

stands behind credit unions. Most deposits are insured up to $250,000. Selecting a credit union is not difficult. The first step is to research those in your community and their membership requirements. Some credit unions are available to employees of specific companies, groups of public service or school employees. But offers extend eligibility to anyone willing to follow their membership requirements. You may be asked to join a food coop or other organization in order to qualify for membership. A simple Internet search is an excellent starting point. Develop a list of credit unions in your area. Then narrow your possibilities by researching eligibility, services offer and fees charged by each credit union. Verify the current interest rates on their accounts. If you can't find the rates online, call and ask them

for the percentages Find out if there are any fees associated with the accounts you want to open. As with traditional savings and loan banks, you might be required to pay a fee if you fall below a minimum balance. Check about other requirements. You might need to use your debit card a certain amount of times each month. If you are in the market for a specific loan, research to see if the loan is issued by the credit union. Once you have found several credit unions offering that type of loan, compare interest rates and specials to see who has the best deal. Of course, convenience is something to keep in mind. Check for availability of online services, weekday and weekend hours, where branches and ATMs are located. You should also understand any fees associated with ATM or

debit card usage. If you use ATMs frequently, those charges can add up fast. Some credit unions belong to a nation network of credit unions for shared services. It might mean more access to ATMs and other services in case you move or go on vacation. If you have children attending college in other cities, this can be useful. Once you have completed your research, make a list of the advantages and disadvantages of each credit union. You can easily compare them. Upon choosing your credit union, visit the branch so you can understand all of the services. Learn more about the benefits of membership. Article contributed by Dupaco Community Credit Union

Credit Union or Bank:

What’s the difference? Credit unions were created to fulfill a public purpose: The cultivation of thrift, encouragement to save regularly, granting of loans for provident purposes at reasonable interest rates, and budget and consumer counseling. Dupaco continues to pursue and fulfill this social mission to serve and enrich the lives of our more than 90,000 members. This ideal is as true today as it was in 1948, when 10 Dubuque Packing Company employees founded the credit union on the philosophy of cooperation and mutual self-help.

Tips for Selecting a Quality Hearing Aid hearing loss. If you have an outdated hearing aid, consider upgrading to a more modern device. It will help your hearing be as close to natural as possible. OPTIONS When you are searching for a hearing aid, look for special features that will enhance your hearing and your life. Some examples include: Bluetooth Connections: You could connect wirelessly to Bluetooth electronic devices, such as smart phones. It allows you to hear phone conversations directly through your hearing aid. Telephone Adapters: This feature senses when you are talking on the phone and adjusts the setting to make it more clear during your conversation.

If you’re suffering from a hearing loss or impairment, a hearing aid may be just the thing for you. Hearing loss affects more than 40 million Americans. People of all ages and backgrounds experience hearing impairment or loss. Many people seek out hearing aids to help relieve the serious consequences of this condition. As a result, they lead richer, fuller lives. These devices are highly technical, customized to meet each individual's needs. Types of hearing loss vary widely, and are sometimes quite different from person to person. Innovations in hearing aids include using digital processors to isolate and amplify the frequencies PAGE 22

choose the right style to fit your needs.

STYLES The good news is that you no longer need to purchase bulky, obvious hearing aids of yesteryear. The most popular hearing aids on the market fit completely within the ear canal. While they are attractive and barely noticeable, their small size means they are typically more expensive. Other styles include half-shell, full-shell, behind-the-ear and openfit hearing aids. Because these hearing aids come in a range of sizes and prices, consult with a specialist to help you

INTERNAL ELECTRONICS The design of a hearing aid will make a large difference in cost and performance. Two devices may look similar but produce dramatically different results. The difference is in the internal electronics. Nearly all hearing aids available today are digital. They will filter out background noise, enabling the wearer to hear a conversation clearly. Directional Microphone: You can adjust your device to pick up sound that is directly in front of you. For example, when you are having oneon-one conversations with a person, it is useful to turn the microphone to improve your hearing. You may also change the setting to a more general setting that would be useful at public performances or concerts. Remote Control: Some devices allow you to adjust the settings without touching it. A remote control can change the directional microphone or amplification. There are a lot of beautiful sounds in the world. Don’t let your hearing loss cause you to miss any more of them. How to Choose a Financial Advisor so there’s no one “right” way of communicating with clients. However, you need to feel comfortable that someone will always be available to answer your questions, review your accounts, evaluate your situation and make appropriate recommendations. If you are interviewing someone who has a partner or an assistant, find out whom you are likely to be communicating with, should you decide to become a client. • What services do you provide? Find out just how a prospective financial advisor can help you. For example, some people sell investments only, while others offer investments and insurance. Keep in mind, though, that you don’t need to be a “one-stop” shopper when it comes to obtaining a wide range of services. In fact, you might want to ask a prospective financial advisor if he or she has developed working relationships with legal and tax advisors. This “team” approach can be quite beneficial to you, especially when you get into the area of estate planning.

If you’re like most people, you have a variety of financial goals: college for your children, a comfortable retirement, a vacation home and so on. You might be able to achieve all these goals on your own — but you will likely find it a lot easier if you get a little help from a financial advisor. But how do you choose the right one? For starters, ask your friends, relatives and co-workers whom they use. Then interview some of the people they recommend. What questions should you ask at such an interview?

PAGE 26

Consider these: • What are your qualifications? Make sure you are talking to someone who, at a minimum, has all the required licenses for selling securities. • What type of experience do you have? Find out how long someone has been a financial advisor, but don’t rule out a person with only a limited amount of experience — a new financial advisor frequently brings a great deal of enthusiasm to his or her work. A financial advisor’s longevity is less important than whether he or she has had experience working with someone

THE COURIER

like you — someone in your financial situation, with your goals and your investment preferences. • What is your investment philosophy? Try to learn if someone favors a specific style of investing or a particular class of investments. These styles or classes may be well-suited for some investors but inappropriate for others. If you believe the person you’re talking to has a “one size fits all” mentality, you might want to look elsewhere.

• How are you paid? Financial advisors get paid in several different ways: fees, commissions, salary or some combination of these methods. One way isn’t necessarily any “better” than another, from your point of view, but you should have a clear understanding of what type of compensation is being used. Your association with a financial advisor is one of the most important business relationships you’ll ever have, so make sure it’s a good one — right from the start. Article contributed by

How to Choose a Mortgage Loan

HOW TO TURN YOUR DREAMS OF HOME OWNERSHIP INTO A REALITY Are you ready to take the leap into home ownership? Before you start your house hunting adventure there are some things you should keep in mind to make the home buying process as simple as one, two, key! CHECK YOUR CREDIT SCORE THREE TO FOUR MONTHS BEFORE YOU PLAN ON APPLYING FOR A LOAN To get on the path to responsible credit building, make sure you are making credit card payments on time and in full if you can, and are staying on top of things like auto and student loan payments. If you have a lot of debt, it is important to get it under control before applying for a loan. SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A REAL ESTATE LOAN OFFICER TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH HOME YOU CAN AFFORD Making a budget and sticking to it is important so you know you will be comfortable making the payment each month. While monthly payments are a big factor, don’t forget to look at things like interest rates, the length (term) of the loan, and the loan type when setting your budget. RESEARCH LOAN OPTIONS Know what different loan options your financial institution offers and familiarize yourself with terms such as Adjustable-Rate Mortgage (ARM), Fixed-Rate Mortgage, Escrow, and Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI).

APPLY FOR A MORTGAGE LOAN When you’re ready to fill out your mortgage application, there are some things you’ll need to have on hand; including: pay stubs, tax returns, W-2 forms, bank statements, and retirement/investment statements. FIND A REAL ESTATE AGENT Once your ducks are in a row, it is time to find a real estate agent. Working with a realtor is important because they, alongside your loan officer, are responsible for looking out for your best interest. Realtors specialize in finding you homes that fit your lifestyle and budget, and they are experts on home buying and real estate laws in your area. In addition, they can help you decipher regulations and contract verbiage, and can make recommendations on home types that will work best for your family and your family’s future. Your real estate agent can also help you line up an inspection so you’ll know the home will be safe and sound when you move in. SEAL THE DEAL After you find your dream home and submit an offer, you will work with your real estate loan officer to schedule a time to close based on the dates on your purchase contract. This is a great time to ask any questions before signing preliminary loan disclosures. After signing the final loan documents the day of closing, the keys are yours. So, go ahead, jump up and down on the couch in your new home, you deserve it! Article contributed by Collins Community Credit Union

How Choose a New Car Dealer Along with the car model, there are numerous options to consider. You might get a car with a navigation system, moonroof, GPS and satellite radio, just to name a few. If you have to commute long distances, think about purchasing a smaller car with a good MPG (miles per gallon) rating. Hybrid cars can help you save money on gas. Anyone in a cold climate might look at various vehicles with either allwheel or front-wheel drive. Choose the Dealer Once you have settled on a car model, check into area car dealers. Finding several dealers who sell the brand of car you want is usually best. The competition for your business will help you negotiate the total cost of your car. Make sure to look for current discounts on the car you want. During specific times of the year, you might be able to get a great deal on a new car. It is particularly true during year-end sales. Of course, you should test-drive a car before purchasing it. When you begin your negotiations, remember that price isn't everything. Service should play a role as well. You are building a long-term relationship with this dealer and manufacturer. It is not worth getting a less-than-satisfactory experience just to save a few dollars. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the dealership. Buying a car is an expensive, longterm commitment. It is always better to find a car salesperson who is informative and friendly. It will make your transaction as simple and comfortable as possible. Article contributed by Dan Deery Dealerships Purchasing a new car can seem like a daunting experience, especially if you have never done it before. Finding a dealer you can trust will defuse anxiety. Inexperienced car shoppers are often intimidated by the cost, the process and even dealers who may try to overcharge them. It doesn't have to be this way. The whole experience will become a simple, low-pressure transaction if you find the right dealership. Good car dealers will make the PAGE 30

entire process of buying a car simple and straightforward. Choose the Right Car Selecting the right automobile for your needs and lifestyle is essential. Large families may need an SUV or van to fit everyone into the vehicle. But college students buying their first car would probably be happy with a compact car such as coupe. The savings on gas will help ease your finances while you are in school.

How to Choose a Web Developer

According to Google, 93% of buyers now research online before purchasing, and 73% research you and your competitors’ products while IN YOUR STORE. Today, more than ever, your online presence is the first impression and driving factor behind whether a customer chooses your business. This is why choosing the right web developer is now a vital part of your success. With a wide variety of web agencies to choose from, the decision can be difficult. Here are three major areas of web development that will prepare you for your search. RESPONSIVE DESIGN Just five years ago, websites only needed to look good on desktop computers. Times have changed. One of the most important trends in web development is called PAGE 32

responsive design. This design strategy will help your site look good on a multitude of devices, including smart phones and tablets. While screen size on each device is different, your site can still look great and perform well on any device. An accomplished web development company will ensure your site looks gorgeous and functions correctly on mobile devices and desktop computers alike. They will also be able to make your website user-friendly, which will keep your customers coming back. CUSTOM CODING While there are plenty of services offering inexpensive websites based on templates, your site will likely need customization. It will need to function specifically for your business. A web development company will help you set up a simple,

THE COURIER

template-based site if that's what you need. They will also be able to help you with much more complex projects that will make your site efficient and proactive. Find a company that will present various options to you. They should consider your budget and level of customization you need. Make sure you clearly understand what's included in each proposal -- the specifics of the building process, how it will be updated, who creates content for the site and where it will be hosted. All of these details should be discussed before you sign a contract. MARKETING SERVICES Web development companies understand that a vibrant website is only the beginning of the marketing process. There are an infinite amount of ways you can increase visibility for your business or organization

online. Popular ways include having a presence on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest. Additional marketing techniques include, but aren’t limited to, advertising on search engines such as Google or Bing, preroll advertising on YouTube and retargeting campaigns that follow you as you navigate to other websites or drip email campaigns. Not all of these methods work for every business. Online marketing is a trial and error process. It will require some time to discover what works best for your situation. However, a talented web development company will help you navigate these choppy waters and discover how to effectively promote your site. They will also keep you from making expensive mistakes on your own. Article contributed by VGM Forbin SUNDAY, JUNE 26, 2016

How to Choose In-Home Care understand that patients also need mental stimulation and human contact in order to stay well. Your provider agency should work to make a good match for you; someone you would find enjoyable to have around your home. PERSONAL TECHNOLOGIES A few in-home care providers now offer simple technologies that help keep you safe at home, even when a caregiver can’t be there. New versions of personal emergency response pendants offer additional support, such as fall detectors, that can automatically call for help when a problem is sensed. Additionally, medication dispensers help patients take their medications as scheduled to keep them healthy.

Many people as they age prefer to stay in the place they call home, whether that is where they raised children, a condo where they downsized or even a retirement community they moved into several years ago. As health needs change, though, care may be needed to make that preference a reality. In-home care providers offer assistance that makes it possible for older adults to keep living at home. WHY IN-HOME CARE Bringing someone into your home to provide care and companionship for a few hours at a time is typically less expensive than moving to assisted living. Choosing the right organization requires some research. How long have they been in business? Some companies on the market today are for-profit franchises. Others are non-profit mission driven organizations. Ask PAGE 34

about the company’s experience and hiring practices. See if they will provide references from current clients or client family members. Talk to your loved one's primary care physician to help you understand your choices. The doctor can help you select a provider and help you determine the level of care required. This professional may even have referrals to give you. After speaking to several inhome care providers, you can compare the range of services they offer. Typically, they will fall into three categories: NURSING CARE Providers vary greatly in terms of whether they provide any certified nursing care. Some have registered or licensed nurses who can help with chronic condition management. Others provide care with certified nursing assistants who can provide more simple tasks such as medication reminders and blood

sugar monitoring. Always inquire about the medical qualifications of any in-home care providers you are considering. All workers should have the proper training, degrees and certifications. If you are unclear about the exact level of medical care you or a loved one will require, ask your physician for advice. COMPANION CARE Caregivers can help with daily grooming, mobility and any special diet requirements. They can help prepare meals or run simple errands. You might have them help clean out closets, fold laundry, put away dishes, sort mail and other household tasks. An in-home caregiver also provides a friendly face and good conversation as well as general care. The caregiver might sing along as you play the piano, or vice versa. She or he could read aloud, discuss daily news or play a board game. Quality in-home care providers

“Mom’s healthier when she takes her medications, so we couldn’t be happier with MedSmart.” Two years ago, Ivy and her daughters encountered a common problem: Ivy would forget to take her medications. Without them, she got sick – sometimes seriously. They found the solution in MedSmart, a simple-to-use medication dispenser. Every two weeks,, Dianne and Suellyn load the prescriptions and schedule the doses. A pleasant alarm sounds twice a day, reminding Ivy to take the right pills at the right time. “It’s just so handy!” she says. “The learning curve was easy,“ her daughters say. “It pays off with her better health and our peace of mind.”

MedSmart is affordable and available locally, only from atHome with Western Home. Call Deb today for a free demo!

How to Choose Alzheimer's Care The community should not feel like a locked hospital ward or a boot camp, but should have security and protective measures in place. Your loved one should be treated with dignity and respect. Some places provide pet therapy or even have a pet in the building, being cared for by residents and staff. ASSISTED LIVING OR NURSING HOME? People with early to midstage dementia can often receive appropriate care in assisted living, particularly in a dementia-specific assisted living community. As the disease progresses, a nursing home may be required to meet the person’s care needs. In Iowa, nursing homes that are certified for dementia care are called CCDI (chronic confusion or dementing illness) communities. Nursing homes must provide security, specialized staff training, higher staff to resident ratios and specialized leisure services to achieve the CCDI license.

Hearing the diagnosis of any fatal disease is difficult, perhaps even more so with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia that cause cognitive impairment along with physical decline. Many family members try to care for people with dementia at home. Sometimes behaviors caused by dementia, such as wandering or being awake at odd hours, mean that’s no longer possible. Finding the appropriate place for your loved one may be the best solution for both of you.

PAGE 36

WHAT TO LOOK FOR Make sure to visit any community that you consider and talk with current family members about their experiences. Be sure to inquire if the community you are visiting provides dementia care in a specialized setting, or with the general population of older adults. You want to inspect the living environment. Are the rooms clean and comfortable? Are there quiet areas for reading? Do outdoor activities inspire activity? People with dementia need to feel comfortable and safe. The best options offer cozy atmospheres

where your loved one can feel at ease. Professionals who care for people with dementia know the support of family and friends can have a huge impact. You should have ample opportunities for family visits, activities and outings that include family and friends. Do residents get to enjoy regular group activities, special outings and other services? Quality providers offer supervised picnics, fitness and craft classes, religious events and even field trips to enhance the care of the residents. Active people stay healthier longer.

WINDOWS AND DORRS

Tips for Extending Your Home into Your Patio

In warmer weather, patios transform into the ultimate gathering space for backyard barbecues, reading, relaxing or even exercising. These outdoor rooms become an extension of the house, seamlessly merging the outdoors inside and vice versa. This year, many homeowners in Cedar Rapids will tackle revamping the home to expand the transformation between indoors and outdoors, developing a patio space that can be used all season long. Think about outdoor and indoor living spaces collectively, and choose a design that integrates them into one seamless space, advised Robert Riley from the Cedar Rapids Showroom. Incorporate elements from the patio into the home and elements from inside into your backyard patio design. Start with a patio door that will set the stage for your transformation. “The privacy of a backyard allows you to be flexible when choosing a patio door. With many design options available, it’s easy to find the style that suits your home’s needs,” said Robert. PATIO DOOR TIPS Choose a sleek sliding patio door to compliment or create a clean look, or if you’re short on floor space. An elegant French or hinged patio door is a good option for homes with ample open floor space. Durable, easy-to-carefor doors like Pella 350 Series® premium vinyl sliding patio doors with the new Rolscreen® retractable insect screen option are great for families with children and high traffic. Also, select a patio door with accents to create the look you want, like stylish grilles, or convenient between-the-glass blinds or shades for added privacy, plus a variety of hardware, exterior and interior finishes. Many Pella patio doors offer a retractable Rolscreen that helps keep insects out while letting in fresh air, and rolls out of sight when not in use. PAGE 38

Windows are very important to keep the seamless transformation between the room and patio. But more glass means more exposure to the elements. Low-E options, like Pella’s InsulShield® Advanced Low-E triple-pane glass with argon, can help protect your furniture from fading in direct sunlight, while enhancing your home’s energy efficiency. If energy efficiency is your top priority, look for a patio door that is ENERGY STAR®-qualified to help maximize potential energy savings and year-round comfort. Continue your transformation with landscaping both inside and out to combine the areas. If your patio connects to the kitchen, potted herb plants indoors blend beautifully with potted flowers on the patio. In settings where a patio connects to a living room, potted small trees inside connect well with planted trees framing your patio. Complete your indoor/outdoor gathering space by using similar materials between the two spaces. If you have decorative woodwork inside, bring it out on the deck with furniture, wooden boxes for your potted plants, in the railings (if needed) or even the trim on the house. Or if you have a lot of fabric inside, carry that over to your patio with weather-tolerant fabrics on your patio furniture. With these transformations, your beautiful patio space will quickly become the top destination in your home – the gathering spot for all family members when they come home from work or their daily activities. If you’d like to update or create a patio area for your home, Pella Windows & Doors can help. Call us at 319.988.4200 (Waterloo) or 319.393.5768 (Cedar Rapids) or visit us online www.pella.com to schedule a no-hassle, in-home consultation. INTERIOR DECORATOR

How to Choose an Interior Decorator

LOCATE INTERIOR DECORATORS Research the names and contact information of interior decorators. The National Kitchen and Bath Association and the American Society of Interior Design have a list of interior decorators in your area. Check with your family and friends as well. In particular, if you know someone whose home you adore, ask who did the work. Choose three interior decorators to interview. Typically, these meetings occur in their offices, but sometimes a prospective interior decorator will want to meet in your home. He or she should want to see the house in order to provide specific details, and should also offer to show you examples of previous projects they’ve done. Your home and office say a lot about your personality and character. The interior design you choose will show off your personality and the uniqueness of you. Does your home need an update? Is the outdated appearance making you feel bored? Or maybe you have recently built a beautiful new home and need someone with a good eye to help you complete the project? An interior decorator can enhance your style or help you find a whole new look for your home. Selecting the right interior decorator will help save you time and money.

PAGE 40

KNOW YOUR PERSONAL TASTE Before hiring a decorator, think about your personal tastes. Leaf through magazines and clip out designs that appeal to you to get an idea of what is available. You could also look on the Internet and print out specific looks you like. Put them in a three-ringed binder or file folder with a comment about why it attracts you. Seeing your preferences will help the decorator understand how to fulfill your needs. It is also a good idea to learn some interior design terminology so you can speak the same language as the designer. Do you know the difference between a club chair, armoire and highboy? Studying the words they use will help you avoid disappointment later.

THE COURIER

COST OF AN I NTERIOR DECORATOR Ask about how bills are handled. Usually there are three methods of payment. The first is by-the-hour. The interior designer will ask that you pay for a minimum number of hours. Once those hours are gone, you may choose to purchase more time in bulk or they may opt to work on an hourly basis. The second payment option is cost-plus. When interior decorators purchase items for your home, they simply add a percentage to the cost. If the decorator uses this method, be sure to discuss your overall budget with them. They will welcome your honesty.

HOW TO CHOOSE 2016

www.wcfcourier.com

The third choice is more similar to the way you purchase most products for your home, in that the decorator has accounts directly with the manufacturers of products you need. They simply purchase at wholesale and sell to you at retail, and you don’t pay any additional fees for their time and expertise. STYLE The best interior decorators have strong personal design philosophies. You will see it in their portfolios and when you speak to them. The ideal professional will have an ability to understand and reflect your style. After all, you are the person who will live in your home. They should fit in with your style, not the other way around. Find someone who is flexible and communicative. If the person doesn't take criticism well, that is not a person you want to work with. Once you have interviewed three interior decorators, choose one you have a connection with. Continue discussing time frames, costs and other details about the project. Do not make payments until you have a contract. Finding an interior decorator might seem like an overwhelming task. Through research, communication and staying true to your own style, you can find a decorator who will transform your house into a true home. GRANITE COUNTERTOPS

How to Choose Granite or Quartz Countertops

High-quality stone countertops will not only make your kitchen more beautiful and stylish, but they can actually add considerable value to your home. Because of their natural beauty and durability, granite and quartz have become the most popular choices for kitchen countertops today. In addition to enjoying your kitchen for years to come you will reap the rewards when the time comes to sell your home. Real estate agents know that having high-end finishes can often bring higher prices and more interested buyers at the time of sale. If you’re thinking about upgrading your countertops, here are some things to keep in mind. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? While granite and quartz are both extremely durable materials there are some distinct differences as well. Granite is a natural product – meaning it is cut from the ground and polished in its natural state. Due to variations in its mineral composition and the way in which it was formed granite will vary greatly in color and pattern. Quartz on the other hand is made up of a blend of natural stone particles, resins and colorants that have been formed into an engineered slab. For this reason, color and pattern are much more consistent than granite. WHICH IS BETTER? While there are strong opinions on both sides of this question the answer really depends on the application and your individual taste. Many people like the maintenance free characteristics of quartz. Others love the look of granite’s natural colors and variation. When it comes to durability and performance, it’s a minor give and take. At the end of the day, most people are comfortable buying the product that catches their eye. The key is to talk to someone who is knowledgeable on the subject. Find someone who sells both – they will give you the most unbiased assistance. HOW DO I CHOOSE WHAT IS RIGHT FOR ME? Most people turn to the internet to research a significant purchase. While that can be helpful to an extent, the best way to educate yourself and find your dream countertop is to visit a showroom. There you can see the stone in person and get advice on what might be the best product for you. Many people who come to our showroom are certain they know exactly what they want. After honest discussion of the give and take of each product and spending some time looking at slabs of each, many customers end up selecting something quite different than they expected. That’s ok - the most important thing is that you love what you’ve picked out. To aid in your decision, bring in samples from the room your tops will go PAGE 42

THE COURIER

in – cabinet doors, flooring, tile, paint, etc. This will help ensure the stone you pick will complement the things already in your home. Keep in mind things like room size and lighting when making your choice. If your room is small you may want to choose a lighter color to give it a larger feel. If your cabinets are lighter, a darker stone may add a nice contrast. The right color and design for you really depends on your personality. If you are adventurous find something bold to make a statement. Some stones have big veins and vibrant colors that will definitely catch the eye of your guests. If you are more conservative go for something a little less flashy. The key is finding something that appeals to YOU. WHO DO I TURN TO? There are a number of places to buy countertops – granite fabricators, cabinet dealers, builders – even the home centers carry them. The key is to find someone knowledgeable and trustworthy to guide you in your decision. Beware of deceptive pricing with hidden costs. A reputable salesperson will be able to explain the price and exactly what that includes. Also, ask questions about how your countertops will be fabricated. Technology has dramatically improved the quality of every step in the process. Make sure your fabricator has the proper equipment to measure, fabricate and install your tops correctly. For many people, purchasing granite or quartz is literally a once in a lifetime event. Therefore it’s critical to get it right the first time. So do some research and find a trusted hand to guide you. You’ll be glad you did as you enjoy your countertops for years to come. Article contributed by

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

How to Choose a Musical Instrument of the mouth, the size of the body or hands and condition of the teeth might all help or hinder your ability to play an instrument. A professional will help you identify the best matches for your physique.

The right musical instrument will help you create the best sounds and gain the most enjoyment. It seems as though learning to play a musical instrument is on everyone's bucket list. The good news is that it is never to late to learn. Playing an instrument can help you to be more alert. It stimulates the brain and helps improve memory. Studies show that children who learn to play a musical instrument at an early age may also learn to read earlier. Whether you pick up a guitar, a set of drumsticks or a flute, you can relax and have fun. So, how do you choose the right musical instrument?

PAGE 44

DISCOVER INSTRUMENTS YOU LIKE Your musical preferences will give you lots of insight. Which instruments are most pleasing to you? For some people, listening to a drum solo is inspiring and exciting. For others, it seems like a bunch of noise. Your first step is to look at the music in your collection. Which instrumental songs get those toes tapping and creative juices flowing? TALK TO A MUSIC TEACHER A professional music teacher can guide you toward the right choices. Sometimes there are physical reasons why some people cannot play specific instruments. The shape

TRY SOME INSTRUMENTS Trying different musical instruments will give you a good idea which one is right for you. Most musical stores will allow you to test instruments at their location. Visit when the store is not crowded for the best opportunities to play. The music store should be a hub for musicians in your community. Look for a store that has been in the same location for a long time. The shop may offer music lessons, or they should know of private lessons in your area. Look for knowledgeable salespeople who love music. RESEARCH THE INSTRUMENT Read about your prospective instrument. Make certain that it is the one you want to learn how to play. Look to see if playing will provide any adverse effects. Callouses, carpal tunnel and other injuries might occur if you play too long or incorrectly. RENT THE INSTRUMENT Some beginners opt to rent rather than purchase an instrument. It is a wise decision if you're not sure you want to take up a

HOW TO CHOOSE 2016

particular instrument. Purchasing an instrument is a big investment. It is a great way to get your feet wet without committing yourself. Try to rent your instrument from a company that will let you apply payments to another instrument if you change your mind. Also, rent from a company that also services the instruments it owns. Most instruments need maintenance and repair periodically. TAKE LESSONS Finding the right teacher can make your experience a success. After all, no one can learn to play an instrument overnight. It is not unusual to start with one instrument and then move to more advanced equipment. Beginners don't have the skills to master advanced instruments in the beginning. It doesn't make sense to purchase professional-quality equipment unless you are certain that you are sticking with it for a long time. Read reviews on the Internet. Talk to professional musicians about the instruments they like best. Have them describe their experiences. Then make your decision. Many music stores will allow you to make payments until you own the instrument outright. It is a good option when money is an issue. Article contributed by West Music Co.

How to Choose a Sandwich Shop For many people, a great sandwich is a treasure. The smell of freshly baked bread or a toasted sub, piled high with the freshest ingredients makes your mouth water. Finding the right sandwich shop can be difficult but you don't have to live in a big city to find them. Don't settle for anything other than the best; a great sandwich shop has these four elements. WIDE VARIETY OF SANDWICH OPTIONS AND FRESH PREMIUM INGREDIENTS It goes without saying that you should find a variety of breads, meats, cheeses and vegetables. The staff might even prepare the sandwich in front of you. Popular meats usually include turkey, ham, salami or pepperoni and modern cheese favorites are American, pepper jack and provolone. Many shops offer freshly brewed tea among other traditional cold beverages, chips and freshly baked cookies that are available to go along with their tasty sandwiches. The best sandwich shops will offer a signature sandwich like Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki and Rotisserie-Style Chicken sandwiches. You should look for handcrafted sandwiches with chicken raised without antibiotics and bread with no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The chicken should be tender, hand-pulled, all-white meat, slow-cooked and seasoned to perfection. Turkey has surpassed other meat options as a great source of protein. Similar to chicken sandwich options, consumers should look for thick-cut, all-white meat, carved turkey, with no artificial preservatives. For toppings you should have the flexibility to get to decide which toppings you want. You should be PAGE 46

able to keep it simple with lettuce, pickles and tomatoes or have the option to get creative with jalapenos, olives, spinach, banana peppers and more. All food should be fresh and made right in front of you with the freshest ingredients. Additionally, all Sandwiches should have the option to be toasted or have the ingredients made into chopped salads. Day old bread is simply unacceptable. That attention to freshness is still found in great sandwich shops today. The best have multiple menu options with fresh vegetables, whole grain bread with essential nutrients (like Vitamin A, C & D, calcium and iron). Other important things to look for are menu items with no artificial transfat, no high fructose corn syrup and items that are good source of protein and complex carbohydrates. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS The sandwich shop you choose should share your same values and a key element to sustainability over time is environmentally conscious ownership. New and remodeled restaurants often use energy efficient lighting saving electricity as well as low flow water faucets savings millions of gallons of water annually. Packaging used in restaurants should be made with recycled content; towel and tissue products along with napkins similarly should be made with 100% recycled material. Electronic lighting has long been one of the largest sources of energy consumption for major sandwich shops so in recent years a move has been made to LED signage and lighting. CUSTOMER SERVICE The employees at a quality sandwich shop appreciate your

THE COURIER

business. As soon as you enter, they should welcome you in a friendly manner. They will fix your food promptly according to your order. The counter staff should be very clean. CLEANLINESS The establishment itself should be very clean, from the ceiling to the floor. There should be a health code rating posted prominently on a wall. Owners take great pride in their businesses, look at the cleanliness of the utensils and tables and if you get the chance to meet an owner of a great looking establishment, offer them a “thank you” or “great

HOW TO CHOOSE 2016

job,” they surely will appreciate the gesture. Every neighborhood seems to offer a great sandwich shop with fresh ingredients, freshly-baked bread and outstanding customer service. It’s there that you can enjoy a delicious sandwich (or salad), made by environmentally conscious owners, who provide great customer service, in a clean, family friendly setting.
