Easy, edible and ghoulish treats for Halloween parties J.M. HIRSCH AP Food Editor

Whipping up a batch of Halloween-inspired treats shouldn’t require a scary amount of time or energy. Because by the time you’ve carved an army of pumpkins, costumed your pint-sized ghouls, purchased bushels of candy, and hung the requisite number of fake spider webs and black cat cutouts, time and patience for cooking up spooky grub may be in short supply. So we’ve gathered a gaggle of ideas — vampire doughnuts, candied apple skulls, goblet graves and doughnut spiders — from Matthew Mead’s new book, “Halloween Spooktacular,” for setting a spooky tone for your Halloween table without setting you back.

GOBLET GRAVE Head to the craft store (or online) and pick up a silicone skull and crossbones ice cube tray. Fill each cavity with plain Greek yogurt, then use an offset spatula to smooth the tops and remove any excess yogurt from the tray. Freeze until solid (overnight is best). Let the cubes soften at room temperature for several minutes, then remove the ice cubes from the tray. Arrange the cubes in a small bowl set over a larger bowl of crushed ice. Serve alongside goblets of grape juice.

CANDIED APPLE CRANIUMS Wash and dry 6 Red Delicious apples. Insert a 6- to 8-inch crab apple twig (cleaned) or a large frozen pop or candy stick. Set aside. Place 12 ounces of white candy melts in a medium heatsafe bowl. Set the bowl over a medium saucepan of simmering water. Stir until the candy has melted. One at a time, dunk each apple into the candy melts, spooning it up the sides and over the top for an even coating. Set the coated apples upright on a sheet of waxed paper to set. Meanwhile, use a rolling pin to roll out Tootsie Rolls until flat. Use a paring knife to cut round eyes and a heart-shaped nose from the flattened Tootsie Rolls. “Glue” the eyes and nose (mount the “heart” upside down) to the apples using piping gel or a bit of purchased frosting.

VAMPIRE DOUGHNUTS Make a stack of honey-glazed doughnuts on a large serving tray. Use a bamboo skewer to poke two fang holes in the top of each, then dribble red gel food coloring (sold in tubes in the grocer’s baking aisle) coming out of the holes and down the sides of the doughnuts.

DOUGHNUT SPIDER Set a chocolate glazed doughnut in the center of a large serving platter. Place a chocolate cake doughnut up against it. The glazed doughnut forms the spider’s body; the cake doughnut is the head. Place 2 chocolate doughnut holes on top of the cake doughnut to form eyes (use a dab of frosting to hold them in place). Top each doughnut hole with a dab of white or yellow frosting, then gently press a chocolate chip into each. For the legs, arrange three sets of three chocolate doughnut holes coming off of each side of the “body” doughnut. If desired, additional frosting can be used to keep the leg doughnut holes in place.

Don Draper has his old-fashioned, Carrie Bradshaw her Cosmo and Homer Simpson is partial to a cold Duff Beer, preferably on tap at Moe’s. Television often features alcohol in a supporting role, and store shelves and tap rooms of late have featured a bevy of spirits with TV tie-ins that seek to bottle — literally — the essence of their television inspiration. Brewery Ommegang collaborated with HBO to create a series of brews inspired by HBO’s hit show “Game of Thrones.” Their first offering, a citrusy blond ale named Iron Throne, was inspired by Cersei Lannister, the show’s fairhaired yet brutal royal matriarch. The beer is light and airy, much like Cersei, but its citrus nose and crisp bite is quick to remind that the drink, like the manicured yet merciless Lannister, is not to be taken lightly. A partnership between online retailer Wines that Rock and Dulong Grands Vins de Bordeaux means fans of PBS’ “Downton Abbey” can soon look for Bourdeaux claret and blanc made from the same region that the World War I-era English upper-crust quaff on the show. Being released in October, this vintage aims to please Carson, the butler who obsessively stocks the cellar of English aristocrats on “Downton Abbey.” For Ted Rice, brew master at Marble Brewery in Albuquerque, N.M., his “Breaking Bad” beer is just a way to pay homage to a show that paid homage to him. Marble’s beers were featured on the show, and Rice’s home appeared briefly as a shooting location. “‘Breaking Bad’ has definitely been a part of our life through beer, our neighbors who work on it, our house. … I wanted to say ‘thank you’ and tip my pint toward the show,” Rice said. His small-batch India black ale, Heisenberg’s Dark, and India white ale, Walt’s White Lie, were created with a nod to the duality of the show’s main character, Walter White, an underachieving yet genius Albuquerque chemistry teacher who takes to cooking methamphetamine. Oh, and for those who always wondered just what Homer saw in Duff, head down to Moe’s Tavern at Universal Orlando’s new Simpsonsthemed park in Florida, where they’re pouring Duff beer (and the “Flaming Moe”). Two more to try: Take the Black Stout: The newest limited offering from Brewery Ommegang’s “Game of Thrones” series is a 7 percent ABV beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. It is due for October release. CEDAR FALLS — For years, the Oster Regent Theater in Cedar Falls has periodically screened some of cinema’s classics, often in groupings with a theme, such as good family fare or the works of Stanley Kubrick. The current series honors a beloved but often overlooked star. On Nov. 3, the Oster Regent will screen the final film in the series featuring the talent of Madeline Kahn, the revered actress best known for her comedic performances in a stage, screen and TV career that spanned four decades. Kahn was well known for her film work, most often in hilarious, scenestealing supporting performances. Perhaps her best-known frequent collaborator was Mel Brooks, with whom she made four films, including

“Blazing Saddles,” for which she received an Oscar nomination. Kahn’s impeccable comic timing and consistent performances in comedies have ensured that she is considered among the funniest women in cinema history. Kahn worked steadily until her death of ovarian cancer in 1999 at age 57. The movie series is sponsored by the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, and admission is a free-will offering.

‘An American Tail’

Nov. 3, 4:30 p.m. This animated children’s film tells the story of Fievel, a Russian mouse in 1885 who gets separated from his family during an emigration to America. Kahn voices a thicklyaccented mouse who helps lead the film’s mice in their battles against murderous cats.

When it comes to food seasons, summer and spring get all the glory. You know, the first asparagus of May, the tomatoes-eggplantcorn surplus of August. But fall is when I get most energized in the kitchen. The eggplant and peppers are still around, but the heartier winter squash starts coming into farmers markets, too. In other words, this is the true bounty, when I have more options than ever. Just as fall brings jackets and light sweaters and breathable scarves, it’s also when I’m compelled to layer lighter and heavier ingredients in my cooking. So when I recently started making an off-the-cuff pasta dish the way I usually do (sauteing onions and garlic in olive oil), I also sprinkled in some cinnamon (along with a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes) for warmth. I let the spices bloom, then cooked thinly sliced red peppers and cubed acorn squash with a can of fire-roasted tomatoes just until the vegetables softened, and tossed

crushed pepper flakes and cinnamon, stirring to coat. Cover and cook until the vegetables have softened, 5 minutes. Increase the heat to medium; add the bell peppers, squash, tomatoes and their juices. Cover and cook until the peppers and squash are very tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Season with salt to taste. Turn off the heat; cover the saucepan to keep the vegetables warm. Toss the drained pasta into the vegetables, along with as much of the reserved pasta cooking water as needed to create a sauce.
