Resolve to take it slow and steady LAURA MARENTIC newsroom@wcfcourier.com‌

Eve r y Ja n u a r y, m i l lions of people make New Year’s resolutions about eating less and exercising more, but only a fraction of them will successfully lose weight and keep it off. Here are a few tips to help you get started and keep going. Make small changes. It’s hard for some people to take things slow. They won’t start their weight loss program until they have everything perfect. Everything has to be planned out, and their exercise routine is charted a few weeks in advance. Instead of overwhelming yourself with a bunch of changes at once, try to make a couple of small changes at a time until they become habit, and then gradually add another each week. In time, these new habits add up. Weight loss is much easier when you’re able to conquer one small goal at a time. Expect a reasonable weight loss pace. If you don’t lose 10 pounds at first, you are not a failure. The standard advice is to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week, but a better measure is between a half a percent to 1 percent of your body mass per week. Your goal is to not just lose weight, but to lose a sensible body fat percentage. Very rarely does someone lose more than 2 pounds of fat per week without sacrificing lean body mass. There’s no point in losing 20 pounds if 10 pounds of that is muscle. Don’t be afraid to eat. We go from overeating to practically under-eating overnight when trying to lose weight, believing that the less we eat the faster we’ll lose weight. This couldn’t be more wrong. Your metabolism adjusts and slows down when you starve yourself and in the long run makes it difficult to lose weight. To keep your metabolism from crashing, focus on five to six smaller meals throughout the day. Don’t diet. Remove the word “diet” from your vocabulary. When changi n g yo u r ways i n t h e kitchen, you are making a lifestyle change. Diets are designed with an end date and rarely do they succeed at long-term weight loss. Typically, diets result in rapid, short-term weight loss followed by a reversion to old eating habits, and the pounds come right back. Think long term. Once you start, understand there is no finish line. You will need to maintain your new, good habits for the rest of your life. Those habits should not stop once you reach your weight loss goals. Prioritize strength training. Cardio equipment is frequently used as the sole method of weight loss. While cardio has its place in a fitness program, it shouldn’t be the priority. Instead, focus on building

Dynamic duo Classical musicians create a sound all their own

CEDAR FALLS —You might think you know what to expect from a performance by two classically-trained musicians. If so, think again.  Violinist Karla Dietmeyer and cellist Olivia Hahn, who make up the duo The OK Factor, will erase any preconceived notions you have. The two Luther College graduates were in town Jan. 2 for a pre-release event

promoting their first CD, “Water Street.” The event, held at Lampost Theatre on Seerley Boulevard, drew dozens of family members, friends, fans and Factor first-timers. The CD is set to be released later this month. Lampost offered a fitting setting for the casual, intimate event. Audience members enjoyed hot beverages and desserts as they anticipated the performance.

The musicians opened with an as-yet untitled song they wrote earlier that day. The pair writes the bulk of their music and sometimes intersperses portions of traditional folk songs. Though their sound is difficult to define – they experiment with everything from jazz to country – they are a self-described alternative folk duo. Their music fills the room, making it hard to believe

instruments. The two are so in sync it is sometimes difficult to tell which sound is coming from which instrument. At times the two are intently focused on their instruments; at others they are sharing smiles and glances. It is apparent the women are good friends. Hahn, 22, is a native of Cedar Falls and has been playing the cello since she

that only two instruments are creating the sounds, and they pull the audience in with their unorthodox style of playing. One moment Dietmeyer plucks the strings of her violin with her fingers, ukulele-style, and the next Hahn lays her cello across her knee and plays it with a guitar pick. Both use the chopping technique – tapping the strings with their bows – to coax a variety of sounds from their
