Hearst Center for the Arts fulfills new director’s wishlist MELODY PARKER melody.parker@wcfcourier.com
CEDAR FALLS — It must have been fate. Martin Arthur wasn’t looking for another job. He loved his work as executive director of Spencer’s Arts on Grand, but he couldn’t resist reading the online description for a post at the Hearst Center for the Arts. A search was under way to replace the center’s longtime director Mary Huber, who retired in March. “The job sounded tailor-made for me,” he recalls. With less than a day left to submit resumes, Arthur decided
“why not?” and applied. When a letter arrived from the Hearst Center a week later, he decided not to open it, certain it was a rejection. Later, battling the flu at home, he decided he couldn’t feel much worse and opened the envelope. It was a questionnaire, which he promptly completed and mailed back. Arthur was contacted for an interview – “I chose the hottest day in July” – and as soon as he saw the Hearst Center with its two galleries, performance hall, sculpture garden and classrooms, “realized I really wanted to work here. That psyched me up for the interview.”

Acting Director Emily Drennan gave him a guided tour of the building and grounds that day, and he knew instinctively the job and location would be a good fit. Although he loved Arts on Grand and the beautiful home he owned in Spencer, he fell in love with Cedar Falls and the Hearst Center and accepted the job of director when it was offered. “It has the best of a small-town attitude and lots of big city amenities, which is a great combination.”
